New Jersey Boating Made Simple

New Jersey is a place of adventure when it comes to boating. There are 127 miles of coastline and hundreds of miles of bay-shore. Beyond that, there are inland lakes and tributaries. Most of the state’s counties, 17 out of 21, border saltwater.

The state makes it pretty easy to get boater safety education, certifications and meet other requirements.

You can obtain a boating license through an online course and there is a wealth of educational courses available online that meet New Jersey state requirements. The states boating laws are also online, as well as applications to waive certain boating restrictions and to hold a marine event.

If you become a boating club member, the club will have all this information for you as well. Most, if not all, hold safety courses and assist in getting a boating license. They host boating events and do all the applications for those events, so you have little to do in preparation other than show up and register.

Boat clubs are a great way to enjoy the sport without all the responsibility of owning a boat. It saves people money and time because everything is there.

There are at least six in New Jersey to look at when considering possible boat clubs.

Freedom Boat Club

Freedom Boat Club was established in 1989 in South Jersey, making it one of the nation’s oldest and largest boat club.  This club has 175 locations in 31 states, Canada and Europe. It has 2000 boats in its national fleet and has more than 20,000 members.

The first advantage of going with this boat club members have access to all locations in the United States and Canada. Its fleet includes a large selection of clean and new boats.

That includes:

  • Pontoon boats
  • Both inshore and offshore center console fishing boats

There is a simple online reservations system and this club offers free unlimited training and unlimited access to the entire fleet. There are no extra charges for using different types of boats.

In South Jersey, the club is located at Harbour Cove Marina in Somers Park. Water access is to the Great Egg Inlet and the mid-Atlanta. There is a restaurant and a state-of-the-art waterfront complex.

Members must be at least 21-years-old, but the club will provide you with boater education and safety courses for free if you do not have a boating license or boating experience.

The South River Boat Club

The South River Boat Club, established in 1958, is a smaller club in South River, NJ., with around 68 members. Some of the members have been with the club for more than 45 years. This is a working club, so members participate with boat maintenance and property upkeep.

The distinguishing fact of this club is the number of coordinated events it has for its members. There are special dining nights, like Italian night, parties, picnics, dances and tournaments. These activities go on throughout the year, even outside the boating season.

This is the right club for those seeking to make new connections and friends.

The club is proud to be a family-friendly club. It has a waterfront clubhouse with a full-service bar and a boat launch ramp. It also offers a low membership free since it is a working club.

Carefree Boat Club

In Avalon, NJ, the Carefree Boat Club has a couple of features over other clubs.

This new club has plenty of valet dock staff so you aren’t spending time looking for assistance. This club will have your boat ready when you arrive at the marina. Staff helps with gear, loads it on the boat and helps with cast-off. They also help you unload when you return and clean the boat.

At this club, members can use the boats as much as they want without paying additional feeds. There is an online reservation system and the member-to-boat rations are low, so you can make a spur-of-the-moment reservation or even make a walk-on reservation.

Boat varieties include:

This club has 75 locations across America and the British Virgin Isles and access are included in the membership. Members get free, unlimited training from full-time staff.

The club is new to social events, but are planning a calendar of events.

Monmouth Boat Club

Monmouth Boat Club is a historic club based on the Navesink River in downtown Red Bank. Founded in 1879, it is a well-known club that offers boats and amenities for both large and small boaters including rowers, kayakers, and paddleboarders.

This is a working club, where members maintain boats and property, and that makes membership and boat space more affordable than most clubs.

It focuses on sailing, so if you like to sail, this is the club to join.

This club has an extensive sailing education available for both adults and youth. Non-members are allowed to participate in the junior sailor program. There are also many competitive racing programs for member participation.

This club has monthly social events throughout the year including parties, wine tastings, and regattas.

National Park Boat Club

The National Park Boat Club is located in National Park, NJ. It is a nonprofit club with the mission to promote social activities, friendships, and opportunities for boating and other outdoor recreation activities.

If you are looking to contribute to the community as well as enjoy boating, this is the club for you.

This club is involved in local charities such as sponsoring local needy families at Christmas through the National Park school system. It also donated money to local groups such as the fire department, the police department, local ACA teams, graduation bonds for local schools and the American Cancer Society.

However, it is tougher to become a member of the National Park Boat Club.

There are 115 members, plus its life members. All applicants must be sponsored by another member. Other requirements include they must be at least 21 years old, of good character and have an interest in safe boating as well as other types of outdoor recreation and club functions.

Additionally, applicants serve 12-month probation before they are elected to full membership.

New Jersey Dragon Boat Club

The New Jersey Dragon Boat Club, located in Parsippany, NJ,   is the state’s first dragon boat club. It was founded in 1999 and promotes boating with events, clinics, consulting and volunteering.

Unlike other clubs, this is a paddle club with teams and races. Anyone, even those without experience can join, but you must complete a paddler agreement, sign an individual waiver and pay the fee. Fees are $125 for adults and $25 for youth and college students.

The unique aspect of this club is that you can pay $10 each practice as a non-member until you decide whether you want to join. Also, non-members can join in on team activities with fees ranging from $5 to $20 a day.

There are four teams in this club. Two are for women and two are co-ed crews One is specifically for those new to the club.

What to Ask Before Joining a Boat Club

atlantic city yacht club

There are some things you need to know before you decide which club to join.

Some questions to ask include:

  • What all does my fee include?
  • Do I need additional insurance or boating insurance?
  • Will I need to get a boating license?
  • What is involved in your training and safety programs?
  • Will I be expected to volunteer at the club?
  • Do you have family activities for children?
  • What are the regulations on gas refills for the boats?
  • What are the rules for turning in the boats at the end of the day?

Getting all the answers upfront will make a big difference in where you decide to drop anchor.

One key factor is finding out if you can bring guests or children out on the boat. You also need to find out what insurance is required to bring others on a boat.

Be sure to read membership agreements carefully, especially when it comes to additional fees or liability.

You will also want to ask about their maintenance policies on their boats. Most clubs are great at maintaining their fleet, but you should know how often routine maintenance is done and what type of performance to expect. Also, ask about procedures if the boat has mechanical issues on the water.

It is important to know who to call for a tow back to shore.

One of the most important factors is whether you like those in the club. It is a good idea, if possible, to attend a couple of social functions to see if you enjoy being around other members before you decide to join the club.

Great Kills to Atlantic City

atlantic city yacht club

Sept. 5-8. Stayed at Great Kills Yacht Club, went to wedding, visited with Larry and Dorothy and generally "caught our breath".

Sept. 9 - Left Great Kills at about 8 motoring into tide and head wind to Sandy Hook (warships you see in the pix are anchored just outside Atlantic Highlands as we go by); picked up outgoing tide just past Sandy Hook and favorable breeze, put up the sails and finally had a pleasant sail on the way down to Manasquan, albeit that the apparent wind never got more than 45 degrees. Boat sailed very nicely. Got to Manasquan at about 3:30 with an Easterly swell and outgoing tide, which made for a very difficult run through the narrow inlet (wasn’t sure the small boat fishing in the middle of the intlet would make way for us, but he finally did) and we got in safely. The inlet is narrow and frankly, I wouldn’t advise doing what we did, but the timing made it a necessity. Docked at Hoffman Marina. First time into a slip for me, and it went nicely. Didn’t hurt that we went in bow first against the current and that the dock hand was a real pro.

Sept. 10 - Left Manasquan at 7:30 to get out of slip before tide turned too hard against me and to give maximum time to get to Atlantic City (50 nm. trip). Boat backed out of slip beautifully and we’re shortly out of the inlet and on our way. Wind is on our nose as predicted, so we motor. As the day progresses wind stays in our face and increases to 20 plus and the seas are on our nose, making for a very long and ugly slog to Atlantic City. It wears on both of us and we’re physical and emotional wrecks as we motor into the setting sun down the Atlantic City entrance at about 6:45. Farley Marina (Golden Nugget casino) says their staff leaves at 7:00pm but we get them to have someone wait for us and we get into the dock about 7:30. Again, bow in and not as perfect an approach as Manasquan, but conditions are benign and bow thruster helps me to make easy corrections to get in without incident. (Think I might get the hang of this.) Finally tied up, boat rinsed of saltwater and start dinner at about 8:30 p.m. Very large private yacht docked on other side of dock is having a party and the speakers are blaring, but it’s OK for the time being. Music quiets around the time we go to bed and then starts up again really loudly at 12:40 a.m. Jolts us awake. Kryss calls the Marina staff and they get them to lower the music.

Yachts For Sale In Atlantic City

Developed as a resort city since the latter 1800s, Atlantic City has had its ups and downs. Located on a barrier island of coastal South Jersey with Absecon Bay to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to east, and wide white sand beaches, Atlantic City was initially envisioned as a seaside health resort. Large scale tourism was not possible until 1854 when the Camden to Atlantic City Railway service opened the barrier island to tourism and development. The first road was built in 1870, along with the first boardwalk, designed to keep the massive beachfront hotels and railway cars free of beach sand.

Today, the Atlantic City Boardwalk is 60-ft wide and 6 miles long. The late 1800s were a period of tremendous growth and real estate boom, as the wealthy built 2-3 story beach cottages, and amusement piers started popping up. Now a National Historic Landmark, Lucy the Elephant, a 6-story elephant built in 1881 to promote real estate sales and attract tourists to Atlantic City, is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America! A local ordinance kept hotels, restaurants, and shops on one side of the boardwalk and amusement piers on the other (oceanside). During the Roaring 20s, Atlantic City was the scene—a hedonistic playground for politicians, Mafia, and ordinary folk looking for a weekend escape. Prohibition was mostly unenforced, and the Boardwalk continued as the place to be seen during the 1930s – 40s. Looking for a way to extend tourism beyond the summer season, the Miss America Pageant got its start 1930-1935 and became synonymous with Atlantic City since Convention Hall became the venue in 1940.

Atlantic City’s oldest theme park and most successful family-oriented attraction is Steel Pier, opened in 1898. The 1000-ft pier located across from Hardrock Hotel & Casino, features 20+ rides and attractions, carnival games, fast food, snacks, and refreshment stands. Recently added is The Wheel, a 227-ft high Ferris-type wheel with 40 climate-controlled gondolas offering great views of the ocean and boardwalk cityscape. After WWII, with air travel making distant destinations possible for tourists, Atlantic City went into a decline. When the Casino Gambling Referendum passed in 1976, investors saw an opportunity to revitalize Atlantic City as an east coast gambling mecca to rival Las Vegas, Nevada. Atlantic City had a good run, with many glitzy, fantastical casinos and hotels lining the Boardwalk, but everything has its limitations; overdevelopment and competition from other states (CT, NY, PA) along with economic recessions, and downturns led to major hotel and casino failures. The historic Absecon Inlet Lighthouse is on the north end of Atlantic City, overlooking the Absecon Inlet. The 171-ft lighthouse is the tallest in New Jersey and third tallest masonry lighthouse in the US. The lighthouse that began service in 1857, was deactivated in 1933. Its light still shines today and is open to public visitation. Historic Gardners Basin maritime park and marina located on a protected channel along back bays of the Absecon Inlet, is directly across from the State Marina and USCG Station. This family-friendly attraction offers sightseeing and fishing cruises, restaurant, Crafters Village shopping, and the 3-story Atlantic City Aquarium. Gardners Basin was once a haven for rumrunners during Prohibition years and port for commercial fishing fleets.

The nearby Smugglers Cove boathouses were originally homes built by rumrunners directly over their docks to offload bootleg liquor in secrecy. This historic park is slated for a $3.6 million renovation. Some dockage is available, but services and facilities are very minimal. The Frank S. Farley State Marina is in a sheltered natural harbor of Absecon Bay. The marina is a public facility of NJ Parks & Forestry, managed by the Golden Nugget Casino Resort. This marina offers full services, such as pump-out, and amenities. 630 floating slips (seasonal, winter, transient dockage) accommodate vessels to 300-ft length and has a dock depth of 8-ft. The State Marina received the Boaters Choice Award in 2019.

Kammerman’s Marina and Siren’s Bar & Grill with easy, quick access to the ICW and Atlantic Ocean, is conveniently located near the casinos, Boardwalk, and beaches of Atlantic City. This family owned and operated since 1961 marina offers full services and amenities, and transient dockage as well as seasonal. Floating docks are 50’ x 5’draft; fixed docks are 100’ x 6’ draft; fuel dock is 160’ x 7’ draft. Great marina for fueling, offering ValvTect Marine Fuel; gas and diesel.

Famous Past Bars In Atlantic City, Margate & Somers Point, NJ

This walk down memory lane will bring back many fond days from yesteryear.

We are sharing just some of the famous bars over the years in Atlantic City, Margate and Somers Point, New Jersey that are no longer open.

There is one exception below … we include a bar that has been open for the past 77 years.

Our list is not complete and you will no doubt have a number of favorites that we did not include … so, please let us know the ones that we missed.

THE 500 CLUB - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

We begin with Paul “Skinny” D’Amato’s 500 Club, the most famous supper club in Atlantic City history. In fact, it’s one of the most iconic establishments in East Coast history.

It operated for more than four decades. The list of the entertainers who performed there is a Who’s Who in the greatest of all time.

These greats and more would appear on a nightly basis at The 500 Club, including:

  • Frank Sinatra
  • Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis
  • Sammy Davis, Jr.
  • The Will Mastin Trio
  • Jimmy Durante
  • Eartha Kitt
  • Sophie Tucker
  • The Jackie Paris Trio
  • Milton Berle
  • Nat King Cole

Note, D’Amato is the visionary who first partnered Martin and Lewis, the most famous comedic collaboration of all time.

JERRY BLAVAT’S MEMORIES IN MARGATE, NEW JERSEY

In 1972, a famous disc jockey named Jerry Blavat purchased this night club and ran it for 51 years years until his passing on January 20, 2023.

Had Jerry not passed away at age 82, this establishment, along with The Geator would still be going strong right now.

Jerry made each and every patron in his nightclub feel important and special.

RUM POINT PUB - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

So many people have fond memories from time spent at The Rum Point Pub.

We’re thankful for the Bobby Schilling photos (above), which serves notice about just how talented The Cole Brothers were.

DINNIEN’S AIRPORT INN & MUSICAL BAR - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

The Kenneth McIntyre photo (above), is from 1945.

A fun fact is that the term Airport was created in Atlantic City at Bader Field.

This establishment was open long ago, however, it is an iconic bar in Atlantic City history.

MALONEY’S TAVERN - MARGATE CITY, NEW JERSEY

Many remember this bar establishment under the ownership of the great George Naame.

This was a favorite spot for decades to many locals and visitors alike.

It opened in 1956. It closed forever in 2005, an almost 50-year run.

Naame was a great man and very supportive and charitable towards many not-for-profit organizations throughout the Greater Atlantic City area.

GREGORY’S RESTAURANT & BAR - SOMERS POINT, NEW JERSEY

This is the only exception on our list, as the only long-time bar that is still open today.

Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar opened in 1946 and now a 5th generation of The Gregory Family works there 77 years later.

Gregory’s is presently in an epic battle with taco behemoth Taco Bell over Gregory’s trademarked “Taco Tuesday” catch phrase.

A real life David versus Goliath tussle, as Tavi bell is a world-wide giant with 6,500 stores in the United States and throughout the world.

Local attorney V. Scott Macom is aggressively defending Gregory’s in this matter.

We also have selected Gregory’s on our list because of the fabulous, traditional massive bar.

It is truly magnificent.

We interviewed Gregory Gregory earlier this week on-air and discussed the bar.

“It's Philippine mahogany, which they no longer export because they devastated the forest. We take it down by sanding layers of varnish down to the bare wood,” said Gregory.

“Once the surface is smooth as glass will put 4 to 6 coats of varnish, allowing you to dry between coats, lightly sanding then applying after two weeks we lightly sand and put a final coat. We do this every 4 to 5 years,” said Gregory.

Here is the fabulous bar. It looks brand new after more than 50 years.

THE MELODY LOUNGE - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

Known as a musical bar, The Melody Lounge has a very loyal following on South Carolina Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Friends would simply tell you that they were going to “The Melody” … that was it. Just two words and everyone knew exactly what you were saying.

TONY MART‘S - SOMERS POINT, NEW JERSEY

Purchased in 1944 by Anthony Marotta, Sr., who owned and operated it from 1945 through 1982.

“It’s not just a nightclub… It’s an institution,“ said Marotta.

Tony Mart’s is the legendary site from the movie Eddie and The Cruisers.

Bill Hayley and The Comets appeared at the height of  their “Rock Around The Clock” launch.

Bob Dylan, Del Shannon and so many A-List greats regularly appeared at Tony Mart’s.

JACK ROSENBAUM’S SAVOY - THE WARWICK - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

Before this restaurant and bar became Orsatti’s, it was owned by Jack Rosenbaum.

The Kenneth McIntyre photo (above) is from 1963.

The establishment was located inside The Warwick, located at Raleigh Avenue and the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.

The Warwick has now been transformed into Condominiums and the stairway to the old restaurant/bar entrance are still there … however the entrance door is covered area. This area is now a property gymnasium and other space.

LITTLE JOHN’S - ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

A former church, located on Tennessee and Pacific Avenues in Atlantic City was a popular dance nightclub and bar that had its peak level of popularity during the disco era.
