From Epic Sailing Vessels to Rugged Explorers: The 10 Best Superyachts That Will Launch This Year

With a combined length of 2,929 feet, the world’s top 10 superyachts scheduled for delivery this year are moving away from the idea that yachting is about whose boat is bigger. The trend is now more about mission than size. This year’s launches will be wide ranging, from motoryachts to sailing vessels, explorers and even a giant sportfish.

The list includes offerings from German shipyard Lürssen , which has two 400-foot-plus yachts ready to splash this year, with noteworthy deliveries from other shipyards in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands showcasing different definitions of design, power and performance.

Here are the yachts we can’t wait to see.

‘Koru’ (564 feet) Oceanco

Jeff Bezos’ first yacht, Koru , was spotted last week on sea trials. The Amazon founder chose to make a bold design statement by commissioning the world’s largest sailing yacht, not to mention the longest pleasure vessel, motor or sail, ever from The Netherlands. Built by Oceanco, the titanic sailing machine is an incredible 3300 GT, powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails. Besides its massive length, its classic canoe stern, a double-deck wooden coach house and navy hull with a red stripe differentiate Koru from any other vessel on the water. The project remains hush-hush. Even the designers remain a secret.

‘Liva’ (387 feet, 1 inch) Abeking & Rasmussen

Launched late last year and scheduled to be delivered in early 2023, Liva is the largest yacht built by Abeking to date, overtaking the German shipyard’s previous flagship Aviva by 65 feet. The French studio Joseph Dirand Architecture was commissioned to pen both the exterior and interior, which is reported to include a semi-submerged underwater observation room on the lower deck, a supersized pool, helipad, spa with sauna and beauty salon, and a lower-deck beach club.

‘Alchemy’ (216 feet, 5 inches) Rossinavi

Commissioned by a private American client, the 216-foot multi-deck motoryacht Alchemy is one of three yachts to be launched by Italian shipyard Rossinavi in 2023. Exterior design is by Philippe Briand, with interior styling by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design. Little information has yet to be revealed, though it’s visible from images that the custom yacht features an axe bow, drop-down side terraces at the stern and large floor-to-ceiling windows that afford views from all levels.

Project Jag (400 feet) Lürssen

The 400-foot displacement motoryacht known only as “Project Jag” is reported to be the owner’s third Lürssen. His most recent is Kismet . It is set for delivery in late 2023. Capable of sleeping 20 guests and 40 crew, the gigayacht is equipped with a helipad, spa, swimming pool, two cinemas, gym and storage for a sub. Italian design firm Nuvolari Lenard designed the steel yacht’s exterior, while UK studio Reymond Langton has crafted what is rumored to be a “bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle”—whatever that means.

Project Luminance (426 feet, 5 inches) Lürssen

Project Luminance is a 426.5-foot motor yacht that Lürssen claims will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced boats in the world. It’s also the largest yacht due to deliver in 2023. Construction began in 2018, yet few details have been revealed. What we do know is that the seventh-largest project to ever come out of the German shipyard to date features state-of-the-art propulsion systems, advanced navigation and communication systems, as well as next-generation entertainment.

‘T52’ (170 feet) Baglietto

The first model in Baglietto’s T52 line, which splashed in February 2023, features sleek lines and aerodynamic grills penned by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Power comes from a diesel-electric-hybrid propulsion system. The yacht celebrates outdoor space, including a large multi-level beach club at the stern with a fold-down transom, oversized sunbeds and a swimming pool with a floor that rises flush with the deck. Sliding windows on the upper deck convert space into an open-air sky lounge and a 78-foot sundeck with a glass-encased hot tub.

Project 406 (170 feet, 6 inches) Royal Huisman

The Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman made its name building some of the world’s largest sailing yachts, including 296-foot Athena , but now it’s hitting the record books again with the impending launch of Project 406 , the world’s largest sportsfisherman. Naval architecture, exterior and interior are by Dutch studio Vripack. The firm gave the six-decked aluminum yacht a towering profile promising spectacular front-row views of the big game fishing action. The team balanced its height by a long bow, high bulwarks and uncluttered fishing cockpit.

‘Black Shark’ (252 feet, 6 inches) Nobiskrug

Black Shark first began construction in 2019, but all work ceased when Nobiskrug later filed for insolvency. In March 2022, following the German shipyard’s acquisition by entrepreneur Lars Windhorst, work on Black Shark recommenced, with delivery set for 2023. The 252-foot boat, designed by Winch Design, gets its name from its predatory profile and mast shaped like a dorsal fin. A reverse bow, black matte hull and metallic silver superstructure will also help to enhance the marine connection.

‘Ultra G’ (196 feet, 8 inches) Heesen

Heesen is renowned for building fast boats, so it’s no surprise that Ultra G , equipped with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, with four water jets and a top speed of 37 knots. The Dutch yard hailed this as its most powerful project to date. The motoryacht was commissioned by an avid sportfisherman, with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods. Entertainment was also a big mandate for the design, stretching from Samsung’s “The Wall” screen, an infinity pool, and a dedicated self-cleaning “dog park” for furry guests.

‘Maverick’ (145 feet, 3 inches) Cantiere delle Marche

Maverick is the first Flexplorer 142 to soon be delivered by Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), bought by a young German who is a keen sailor and serial owner of both sailing boats and motoryachts. The owner’s itinerary will see him cruising the Mediterranean, before heading to the Northern latitudes to cross the Northwest Passage and put Hydro Tec’s bold exterior design and running surface to the test. Key features include a custom-built A-frame crane that sits flush on the deck when not in use, collapsible bulwarks that fold-down to reveal a 1,450-square-foot beach club, and an infinity pool at the transom.

Over 250 Irwin 52’s and 54’s were built. First introduced in 1976, The Irwin 52 quickly became the  most  popular cruising center cockpit sailboat on the market.  In 1988, the boat evolved into the Irwin 54 with a major redesign of the hull, deck and interior. “Patience“ is one of the last Irwin 54’s and possibly the best ever built.

“Patience” was ordered new by her original owner in 1989 and commissioned in 1990. The concept was to utilize the basic clever design and create a vessel of not just outstanding beauty, but also a yacht that is flawlessly executed and engineered to a standard normally seen only in larger vessels. The spectacular result is not only a "go anywhere" yacht, but also one of absolute luxury, total privacy and short-handed style.

Interior Description

“Patience” sleeps six persons in three private cabins, excluding the main salon, with optional sleeping space in workroom.

She has a stunning interior that really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. (See the 3D Virtual Tour) She was designed and then customized around luxury, quality and functional elegance. The interior is truly gorgeous and maintained in show condition at all times.

Starting forward is VIP Stateroom with centerline queen berth.

Next aft to starboard is the Guest Cabin with a double berth.

The Guest Head is to port and features a separate shower stall and a separate door to the Vip Stateroom and another door that opens into the hallway. 

The huge raised Main Salon features large fixed ports, offering a panoramic view outside. To starboard is another  “L” shaped settee and dining table. Next aft is a desk and breakfast bar.To port is a  “L” shaped settee followed by a large Chart Table. Here is located the electronic switches for AC and DC Systems. A large flatscreen TV is located above and navigation instuments are outboard. An eight bottle wine cooler is located below.

Next aft and down two steps is the Galley. The galley on “Patience” will appeal to any cruising gourmet and is equivalent in size to what you'd expect on boats much larger. The galley provides ample counter space, cabinets and drawers for storage. Opposite the galley is the separate laundry room and complete walk-in workshop.

High-Riding Acura EV Concept Was Inspired by Super Yachts and the NSX

After a brief transactional affair with General Motors to take advantage of its Ultium electric vehicle platform, Honda is switching to its own dedicated EV architecture. The first car to be built on it will be teased during Monterey Car Week with the Acura Performance EV Concept.

Despite looking like something out of Rocket League , the Performance EV Concept is supposed to be a vision of what’s to come from Honda’s premium arm. It’s very clearly just for show, with its lack of door handles, side mirrors, and cartoonish proportions. The road car that it’s alluding to isn’t too far off, though, as Acura claims it will go into production in late 2025. So expect to see the real deal in between now and then.

Acura is leaning hard into its supposed sporty nature, though. With an aggressive vented hood, massive 23-inch wheels wearing 295/35R23 performance tires, and drilled brake discs with four-piston calipers, Acura’s EV concept leans into the “Performance” part of its name. The tall front end, with its pointy nose and angled front vents, is supposed to resemble hydrofoil super yachts. At the back, Acura is bold enough to claim that the rear decklid, full-width taillight bar, and big diffuser pay homage to the second-gen NSX . Blasphemy aside, this Performance EV Concept prepares us for the company’s future flagship model, as Acura Design Executive Dave Marek said it has “a number of design themes that will be seen on future Acura vehicles.”

When it goes into production, it will not only be the first car built on Honda’s new EV platform, but also the first car produced by Honda’s EV hub in Ohio. It’s unclear exactly how close the final production car will look to this concept, but considering the road car is only about a year away, it could be pretty close.

If you’re in Monterey, the Acura Performance EV Concept will make its debut at The Quail and then appear again at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. When it hits the road, this upcoming electric crossover will be sold alongside the Ultium-based ZDX .

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

• It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
• Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
• The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.

Monterey Car Week is in full swing and Acura is one of the automakers taking advantage of the spectacle to debut its new Performance EV Concept . It's the latest design study from Honda's luxury performance division and is said to preview the brand's visual direction moving forward. But more so, it ultimately also previews a new production EV.

While it gives a taste and teaser into what Acuras could look like in the near future, the Performance EV Concept also represents a new production car that the company's actually developing. This isn't surprising as both Acura and parent company Honda have a reputation for producing concept cars that are often near production-ready. So does this mean we could see a unique, sports coupe crossover SUV from the brand? It seems so.

Here's What Separates Acura From Honda

Acura is, essentially, the luxury and performance arm of Honda, but there's a lot more that separate the two than you probably realize.

Still Going All-In On EVs

Despite the ongoing ups and downs of the EV market, Acura is still charging ahead at full blast with its EV plans and this latest Performance EV Concept is the latest proof. Not too long ago, Acura launched the ZDX, a new high-performance luxury crossover SUV EV built on GM's latest Ultium platform underpinning the Cadillac Lyric, Chevy Blazer EV, and of course, the Honda Prologue. Due in the near future at an earlier date is the new ADX, due sometime later this year.

"The Acura Performance EV Concept kicks off the exciting next step in our electrification strategy, showcasing the styling direction of our next all-new, all-electric Acura model that will debut next year," said Acura's National Sales assistant vice president, Mike Langel. "Building on the just-launched all-electric 2024 Acura ZDX, our next all-electric Acura SUV will continue our focus on delivering Acura clients an exhilarating driving experience in the electrified future."

Specific details about the Performance EV Concept are sparse, though Acura says part of its design, specifically the concept's front bumper and lower fascia treatment, is inspired by hydrofoil superyachts. Its slick, streamlined design is purposely shaped to slide through fluid masses (air/water) with ease and the Performance EV Concept's frontal design embodies this concept for the sake of aerodynamics.

It's overall shape is reminiscent of a low-slung roof sports coupe. But obviously the extra height below the shoulderline and the extra ground clearance clearly a portray the profile and stance of a crossover SUV. And similar to other recent Honda and Acura, the Performance EV Concept features a taillight bar that spans the full length of the rear end. In a sports and race car-like fashion, the rear lower fascia features a center-mounted taillight as well for extra visibility and style.

Other notable details include massive 23-inch wheels wrapped in 295/35R23 rubber, cross-drilled high-performance brakes with four-piston calipers pained in Moonlit White, and other design cues taken from Acura's Electric Vision Design Study from last year's Monterey Car Week.

The Performance EV Concept comes from Acura's Design Studio in Los Angeles, where the company's designers penned its overall shape and aesthetic. When it heads to production, the Performance EV concept in its real-world form will be the first production EV to be produced at Honda's new EV Hub in Ohio.
