For many years the City of London bank yacht clubs raced together in the inter-bank sailing series, while the City’s exchanges, made up of Lloyd's of London, the Stock Exchange and Baltic Exchange had their own race series.  The City Sailing Series emerged in 2018 when these clubs came together from their “Parallel Universes” at a meeting held in the Little Ship Club and agreed to coordinate their activities.

There are four Regattas each year, open to all City Sailing Series clubs shown below.  We welcome other sailing clubs to join in – the more the merrier.

 It’s all about having fun!  The City Sailing Series is made up of a series of races that are run during the season and which are organised by some of the clubs / associations and details of which can be found here.  The Regattas are primarily aimed at the less experienced racers or people who normally go cruising but like an occasional race.  They are handicap races, for monohull boats which have fixed keels and can be slept aboard, so the slower boats have a good chance of winning, if sailed well!

All the courses start and finish from one of the various Cowes club’s lines are “round the cans” races i.e. they use the fixed navigational marks and special purposes marks in the Solent.  The format tends to be two races on a Saturday followed by a social in one of the yacht clubs (such as the Royal Yacht Squadron, Royal London YC, RORC or Island Sailing Club) in the evening where any trophies for that day’s racing are presented.  Then there is another race on the Sunday which is aimed at getting you out sailing on the Sunday morning before heading back to your home port early in the afternoon. 

There are normally two classes.  One for those boats which have an IRC certificate (normally those that enter other races as well) and those which don’t have a rating certificate, Cruiser Class.  For these boats a handicap is applied by the committee based on a number, not too many, dimensions supplied by the owner.

Overall it is a great way to have an excuse to do an occasional race with other people who primary work within the City of London or have connections to organisations who have a central London presence and then to discuss the day’s tactics with your fellow sailors during a social function in the evening. 

The Series Trophies

To encourage skippers to enter more than one Regatta during the year, we have introduced a Winner plus 2 nd and 3 rd place Series Trophies for each year, based on the aggregate of all positions gained in each Regatta.

The Series Trophies are to be awarded at a skipper level - as several competitor boats are chartered, we cannot score at boat name level.  Each skipper will score points based on their overall ranking in each Regatta so 1 point for overall first, 2 points for second etc.  The ranking is overall for each Regatta after combining all classes into one.

Not competing in a Regatta will add 20 points to any skipper’s score for the year.   

Where the total year-end points between competitors are equal, the one with the most first places will be ahead and then continuing this count-back over 2nd, 3rd and 4th places will rank the winners (RRS A8).

Note:  There must be two or more Regattas in the year for the Series Trophies to be awarded.

• On The Water

Each year RTYC's race management team host over 80 days of competition. Our race teams compete against UK and international clubs and members participate in a wide range of racing and cruising events in home waters and worldwide. A full programme of fleet and team racing runs year-round in our new fleet of 12 Sonars, based at Queen Mary Reservoir, in the autumn/winter, and from April until October in our J/70s based in Cowes. The Knightsbridge Clubhouse is a haven for those who want a relaxing and exclusive base in London. There are two bars, reading and meeting rooms, an excellent a la carte restaurant, still called the 'Coffee Room', a relaxed bistro and cabins for those wishing to stay in the heart of London. A friendly welcome, fine food and comfortable accommodation are guaranteed.

Along side our on-the-water activities sits our social programme, which offers members a wide and varied selection of events to suit their many interests. From formal dinners to themed parties, regular wine tasting evenings and our autumn/winter series of Waterside Chats that showcase the endeavours and expertise from within and beyond the club. The Royal London Yacht Club was founded in London in 1838. Its first meeting place was the Coal Hole Tavern in Fountain Court on the Strand. Racing commenced on the [River] Thames. It obtained its Royal Warrant from the dowager Queen Adelaide in 1849. Now the Royal London Yacht Club has its House located in the centre of Cowes [Isle of Wight] waterfront, on a site that it has occupied since 1882. The club has a long history in British yachting. Its members have ranked among the most colourful personalities in the yachting scene. It was the first popular yacht club to bring the sport to Cowes . In its early days it fostered racing innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal set of rules and system of measurement. Concern with the past is now balanced by an active and progressive membership with interests in all forms of yachting and a very active social calendar. Membership is limited to 500 members.

Arundel Yacht Club

The London based club was established by a group of gentlemen, who sailed on the River Thames. They kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps, which lead to the formation of the �Arundel Yacht Club� in 1838.

London Yacht Club 1845-1846

At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a White Ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and a gold star in the canton below.

London Yacht Club 1846-1849

In 1846, the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star. In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of King William IV, became the Patron of the London Yacht Club and thus the club was renamed again as 'Royal London Yacht Club'. At that time, RLYC was the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs. A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a Blue Ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly topped by a royal crown. A Burgee was adopted which unlike many clubs, actually corresponded with the Ensign. The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread support. However, in 1882, it was decided to move to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A lease was taken on the two elegant Regency Houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today. Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day and it still is to this day. Royal patronage came again when in 1893 the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911 when he ascended the throne as King George V. The present Admiral is HRH the Princess Anne who succeeded her Father the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days when the Club fostered innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal  set of rules and system of measurement.  

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the now annual Cowes Classics Week is probably the most successful event that the Royal London has run for many years.

The regatta has been growing year on year and is being referred to as ‘the Goodwood Revival of Yachting’ and ‘one of Europe’s most important classic yacht regattas’.

In 2016 the Club will be running World Championships for the Tempest and Etchells classes.

Albany Motor Yacht Club

Albany Motor Yacht Club (AMYC) is a very social, friendly, fun loving club based on the River Thames.  We run a varied calendar of events both non-tidal, tidal and purely social. 

Benfleet Yacht Club

The Benfleet Yacht Club is a large and friendly club situated along the shore of Benfleet Creek, on the northern coast of Canvey Island, Essex. 

Brentford Cruising Club

Brentford Cruising Club (BCC) is a friendly, active and well established yacht club based at Brentford Dock Marina, offering river cruising, social events, courses & training.

Broom Owners Club

 The City Livery Yacht Club offers sailing, boating and socialising opportunities to its members, even those who are just interested in ‘messing about in boats’ or who just like to meet and chat about their boating experiences. 

Dockland Scout Project

 Based in the West India Dock Complex to the east side of London, we offer the perfect location for Water Activities, Open Days and formal training courses to youth groups and adults involved in organisations such as Scouts, Guides, Cadets. 

Hurlingham Yacht Club

 For nearly 100 years the Hurlingham Yacht Club has been a small, friendly club for both boating enthusiasts and locals alike, located near Putney Bridge, London SW15

 The International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians began in England in 1947 and is the oldest and largest of the Rotary Fellowships. There are 11 UK fleets 126 fleets World Wide. 

Island Yacht Club

 The Island Yacht Club in Essex is a superb sailing environment less than an hour from London, boasting some of the finest sailing waters in the UK.

Little Ship Club

Oxford ditch cruising club, middle thames yacht club.

The Little Ship Club is a yacht club for sailors, motor boaters and non-sailors alike. Our beautiful clubhouse is right by Southwark Bridge on the Thames in London where our members enjoy good company, excellent food and a great social calendar.

The Middle Thames Yacht Club enjoys a fantastic location on Sunbury Lock Island on the River Thames. Our location offers which allows for some terrific cruises both up- and down- river, and further afield. Visitors are always welcome, please contact us.

We are a group of boaters who value our reputation as one of the friendliest clubs on the river. Our water-borne events include rallies and sociable activities held on the river bank. We stage events at various locations for socializing and eating. 

Richmond Yacht Club

One of the oldest motor cruising clubs on the tidal Thames, based on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham since 1962. With a waterside location and a brilliant clubhouse with bar for parties the RYC is the place to be on a nice summers day to watch the boats go by

Star Craft Owners Club

 The Star Craft Owners’ Club, started by a group of devoted owners in 1993, is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of these classic wooden motor cruisers, built between 1946 and 1975 by William Bates & Son in Chertsey, Surrey. 

St Pancras Cruising Club (SPCC) is based near Kings Cross on the Regent's Canal. We organise regular cruises on the Thames Tideway between Brentford, Limehouse and Bow Creek.  The Club also welcomes anyone interested in boating and inland waterways. 

Thames Motor Yacht Club

 The TMYC is one of the best located boating clubs on the River Thames, situated amongst picturesque grounds in Hampton Court with its own club-house, a riverside bar and galley and moorings for member boats. 

The Club was founded in 1983 and now has a membership of around 230. It provides a forum for owners and users of traditionally built craft and seeks to encourage their restoration, maintenance and use. We hold social gatherings and rallies in the Middle Thames area and organise excursions. Our magazine The Boater appears three times a year. 

 We are a friendly boating club on the Thames with about 200 members. Between us we own some 80 boats of all ages and sizes up to about 40 feet. We have a spacious clubhouse with a bar and moorings. 

Windsor Yacht Club

 The Club was founded in 1976 and our club house enjoys a riverside location at MDL Marina (between Windsor and Bray). 

Whatever the size of your boat, whether you are working or retired, a family or single you can be assured of a warm welcome.

The Club History

The Club originated in London and was formed by a group of gentlemen who sailed on the River Thames and met regularly at the Coal Hole Tavern off the Strand. They kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps which lead to the formation of the Arundel Yacht Club.

In 1845, the Members voted to assume the title 'London Yacht Club'. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a White Ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and a gold star in the canton below. In 1846, the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star.

In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of King William IV, became the Patron of the London Yacht Club and thus the Club became 'Royal'. At that time, RLYC was the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs. A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a Blue Ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly. A Burgee was adopted which unlike many clubs, actually corresponded with the Ensign.

The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread support. However, in 1882, it was decided to move to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A lease was taken on the two elegant Regency Houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today.

Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes, the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day, which it still is today. Royal patronage came again in 1893, when the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911, when he ascended to the throne as King George V. Our present Admiral is HRH The Princess Royal, who succeeded her Father, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days, when the Club was instrumental in establishing a universal set of rules and a system of measurement.

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the annual Cowes Classics Week, at present sponsored by Charles Stanley Direct, is one of the most supported and competitive Regattas held in the Solent. In 2017, this Regatta celebrates its 10th Anniversary. It has been growing year on year, and is being referred to as 'the Goodwood Revival of Yachting' and 'one of Europe's most important Classic Yacht Regattas.

In 2016, the Club organised and ran the World Championships for the Tempest Class as well as the European and World Championships for the Etchells Class.

TS CITY OF LONDON COMMISSIONED

The naming and commissioning of TS City of London took place on Saturday 3 June at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth, following a £400,000 fundraising appeal.

The yacht – a Rustler 42 –  can take up to six cadets, along with a skipper and mate. Young people from Falmouth and Penryn Sea Cadets Unit and Torpoint Sea Cadets Unit were present at the commissioning, along with Lord and Lady Mountevans, who lent their support to last year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal, for which Sea Cadets was a joint charity partner. 

Sea Cadets’ CEO, Martin Coles, said: “We are delighted to launch our new yacht, TS City of London, which will allow us to get even more young people out to sea, boosting their confidence and self-belief.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended the naming and commissioning, and in particular Lord and Lady Mountevans, whose support during last year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal was instrumental in raising the £400,000 needed to fund this fantastic asset.”
