German shipyard abeking & rasmussen launched its largest superyacht to date, with a length of 118.20 meters. joseph dirand designed the interior and the exterior design..

LIVA is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion with four VOITH thrusters. The two Caterpillar main generators have a power of 2240 kW. Furthermore, there are three 599 kW auxiliary generators – by Caterpillar as well.

Joseph Dirand explains the design of the motor yacht LIVA .

“I wanted this boat to be timeless, elegant, pure, thine, classic, contemporary with a large amount of outdoor space to be immersive with the surround landscape. This is exactly what I see when I look at it today – the black hull is really spectacular and looks completely monolithic”, Joseph Dirand commented when he saw MY LIVAO emerging from the shed for the first time. “I have been obsessed by this project during all those years and it is the opportunity of my life to design a boat like this. I am happy today that everyone is realizing why all those details were so important to get to this result. It is my turn to thank the shipyard for being such a great partner in the realization of this dream.”

LIVA welcomes a 16m day tender in a lower deck garage. According to Abeking & Rasmussen, that was one of the construction challenges. Another tender garage is on the main deck forward. There is space for three boats, a seven-person Triton submarine, diverse water toys, bicycles, and diving equipment.

The yacht features a Neptune/Nemo lounge (a window half underwater – example )

For LIVA , aka Project 6507, Abeking & Rasmussen used a new laser welding method . The Photon AG from Berlin developed it together with A&R to get smoother surfaces with fewer reworks.

This iconic yacht boasts a sleek black hull that stands as a symbol of sophistication and elegance on the water.

The design of the exterior and interior was entrusted to the incredibly passionate experts at Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris – with their precise imagination they created a true icon. It was a huge challenge for the shipyard to implement all technical necessities to be as invisible as possible in order to strictly follow the challenging aesthetic design intent.

The yacht employs a sophisticated diesel-electric propulsion system designed for exceptionally quiet operation during navigation and maneuvering. This innovative approach incorporates two 2200 kW electric propulsion motors, expertly manufactured by RAMME Electric Machines GmbH and supplied by SER Schiffselektronik Rostock GmbH. To ensure a steady supply of electrical power, the vessel is equipped with two 2240 kW Caterpillar main generators and three 599 kW Caterpillar auxiliary generators, supplied by Zeppelin Power Systems.

To further enhance its propulsion capabilities and onboard comfort, the yacht features an array of advanced components. Four VOITH thrusters lend their power to the yacht’s maneuverability. Four stabilizer fins from SKF play a pivotal role in comfortable experience for passengers and crew alike. This comprehensive blend of cutting-edge technology culminates in a propulsion and comfort system that ensures efficiency, silence, and seamless operation.

The project presented its fair share of challenges, and the most notable was the construction of a tender garage on the Lower Deck fitting a 16-meter day tender. The second tender garage on Main Deck forward accommodates not only three splendid boats, but also a Triton Submersible for up to seven guests and a variety of water toys, bicycles and dive equipment enhancing the yacht’s recreational offerings.

The exterior design, thoughtfully crafted to maintain the vessel’s elegant black silhouette, boasts a unique approach. Instead of traditional anchor pockets, the yacht incorporates underwater anchors on the keel. This ingenious design not only adds to the vessel’s allure but also enhances its efficiency and maneuverability.

Further standout features include a Neptune Lounge offering an unparalleled underwater view through a massive 3.40m x 1.30m underwater window. Guests can marvel at the breathtaking world below sea level while enjoying the luxurious comfort of the lounge. Another dedicated haven for relaxation on main deck is the mobile 12 x 4 meter pool, its floor capable of being elevated to the upper level and adorned with liquid marble, creating an illusion reminiscent of the sea’s surface when raised, while the pool walls and surroundings are also luxuriously enveloped in marble.

The crow’s nest, positioned at the foot of the mast, promises an exceptional observation experience, giving the Owner and his family a privileged vantage point to soak in the surrounding beauty. Also, an exquisitely arranged large marble-clad fireplace complemented by a generous round sofa on the forward sundeck offers a warm and inviting ambiance for relaxation and social gatherings. Furthermore, the yacht features a fully certified helicopter pad on the sky deck, catering to the Owner’s discerning taste and providing easy access to remote locations.

The proud Owner entrusted the expertise of Cornelsen & Partner to carefully project manage the construction process from the outset and throughout. Their collaboration ensured the seamless execution of the Owner’s vision throughout the build of MY LIVA.

The German shipyard has delivered the 118m Liva°, the largest yacht it has built since it was founded in 1907.

Abeking & Rasmussen has delivered the 118.2m Liva° , notable for its black hull and super-clean exterior and interior design by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris. Featuring accommodation for 12 guests and 33 crew, the 388ft, 5,054GT superyacht has a fully certified helicopter pad on the sky deck and is the largest yacht built by the German shipyard, which was founded in 1907.

Matthias Hellmann, CEO of Abeking & Rasmussen, said: “The delivery of this magnificent superyacht marks a defining moment for our company, and I can confidently say we’ve once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht. By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we’ve created a yacht that sets new industry standards and delights our discerning clientele.”

Cornelsen & Partner project managed the construction process on behalf of the owner, while Abeking & Rasmussen admitted it “ was a huge challenge for the shipyard to implement all technical necessities to be as invisible as possible to strictly follow the challenging aesthetic design intent ”.

To maintain the elegant black silhouette, traditional anchor pockets are replaced by underwater anchors on the keel. Challenging technical aspects included the construction of a lower-deck garage fitting a 16m day tender, while the second tender garage forward on the main deck accommodates three boats, a seven-passenger Triton submersible, bicycles, water toys and dive equipment.

Standout features include the Neptune Lounge, where guests have an underwater view through a window measuring 3.4m by 1.3m. For an exceptional above-water observation experience, the crow’s nest at the foot of the mast offers a privileged vantage point, while other inviting outdoor areas include a forward sun deck with a round sofa and large marble-clad fireplace.

The main deck includes a 12m by 4m pool with a floor capable of being elevated to the upper level and adorned with liquid marble – creating an illusion reminiscent of the sea’s surface – while marble also envelops the pool walls and surroundings.

For quiet operation during navigation and manoeuvring, Liva° has a sophisticated diesel-electric propulsion system including two 2,200kW electric propulsion motors manufactured by Ramme Electric Machines and supplied by SER (Schiffselektronik Rostock).

Other technical equipment includes two 2,240kW Caterpillar main generators, three 599kW Caterpillar auxiliary generators by Zeppelin Power Systems, four Voith thrusters and four SKF stabiliser fins. The yacht can reach 18 knots and has a range of 7,100nm at a cruising speed of 15 knots.

“This comprehensive blend of cutting-edge technology culminates in a propulsion and comfort system that ensures efficiency, silence, and seamless operation,” Abeking & Rasmussen stated.

Cyprus calls for EU help to manage record Syrian migration from Lebanon

Interior minister says island’s facilities at breaking point and calls for aid to Lebanon similar to recent Egypt pact

The EU must help Cyprus deal with record numbers of Syrian migrants from Lebanon , the island’s government says.

Before a visit to Beirut to discuss the emergency on Monday, Cyprus’s interior minister appealed for support from Brussels, saying the country’s reception facilities were at breaking point.

“This is a cry for help,” Constantinos Ioannou told the Guardian.

“There has been a very sharp increase [in flows]. We are in crisis mode, reaching our limits.”

Last week 15 boats carrying 800 people made the 10-hour journey from Lebanon, leaving Cyprus in what its president, Nikos Christodoulides, called “a state of serious crisis”.

“Most of those 800 were young males,” said Ioannou. “But they also included nearly 100 unaccompanied children for whom we had to immediately provide guardianship.

“We strongly believe [Lebanon] should be financially assisted by the EU.”

An aid package similar to the €7.4bn (£6.4bn) pact reached between the EU and Egypt last month – also in exchange for stemming flows – should be discussed, he said.

While the idea was “gaining traction” within the 27-member bloc, Ioannou said there was still a way to go.

Christodoulides will press the case when he holds talks with the EU president, Ursula von der Leyen, in Athens on Sunday before flying to Beirut with his interior and foreign ministers.

The EU Commission put its signature to the agreement with Cairo despite facing fierce criticism from human rights groups .

The uptick in arrivals comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Increased hostilities on the Lebanese-Israeli border have shifted the focus of Lebanese authorities away from curbing irregular migration and increased fears of a wider conflagration.

“Lebanon has 2 million Syrian refugees,” Ioannou said. “Authorities there simply don’t have the capacity to manage their borders which is why they need help.”

More than 2,000 people made the 100-mile sea crossing from Syria in the first three months of the year, compared with 78 in the same period last year, according to figures released by the Cypriot interior ministry.

Christodoulides said his government would have to enforce measures that “are not liked” if the influx continued.

For 50 years Cyprus has been divided between a Turkish-occupied statelet in the north and the internationally recognised south, the result of Ankara ordering a full-scale invasion after an attempted coup aimed at union with Greece.

The latest influx follows a dramatic drop in arrivals after Turkish authorities in the north started enforcing stricter visa requirements on students, who regularly crossed illicitly to the south, and the Greek Cypriot government launched a social media campaign to inform would-be asylum seekers about the harsh reality of arriving on an island isolated from the rest of contiguous Europe .

Prior to the decline, Cyprus had exceeded every other EU member state in asylum requests – registering the highest number of claims per capita , which prompted local officials to complain of a disproportionate burden being placed on EU frontline states.

“If you draw a circle around Cyprus you see countries, with the exception of Greece, convulsed by violence, instability and war,” said Hubert Faustmann, professor of history and political science at the University of Nicosia. “The government is very fearful that this influx could turn into a flood given the experience of the past.”

“If the war escalates into Lebanon it will automatically trigger ever bigger refugee flows,” Faustmann added. “It is easy to see how, as an EU Mediterranean border state, Cyprus would push for an agreement with Lebanon much as Greece did with Egypt.”

The Cypriot interior minister said while the island was expanding its capacity to host refugees, with the help of EU funds, it also wanted Brussels to consider declaring parts of war-ravaged Syria safe for repatriation as part of a broader re-evaluation of migration policies.

“We think that 13 years after the [eruption of the] conflict we should re-evaluate Syria, look at safe zones there and legal pathways to relocate citizens to those areas,” he said.

“Refugees, generally, are totally misinformed by smuggler networks about Cyprus. They have no idea Cyprus is out of Schengen [the European area in which border controls are abolished] and think that, once here, they can get a train to Berlin.”

The eastern Mediterranean outpost has long been a haven for people fleeing regional turmoil . Thousands of Israelis flocked to the island within weeks of the 7 October Hamas assault that triggered Israel’s retaliatory attack on Gaza.

Ioannou said with the boat landings showing no signs of waning, the island’s leadership would also discuss offering further technical assistance to combat irregular migrant flows when it visited Lebanon on Monday.
