America’s 10 Best Yacht Builders

Yacht At Last side view

In America, the yachting industry might not be as established. Yet, today, America’s best luxury yacht builders continue to put out award-winning and state-of-the-art designs. Who are America’s best yacht builders?

From Christensen to Trinity, we countdown the best yacht builders in America and highlight what makes each shipyard unique. Here are our favorites:

1. Christensen

Christensen is one of the most established yacht builders in the U.S., and the company is known for its completely custom yachts. Each yacht the company produces is designed according to owner specifications.

Known for its classic hull design, and upscale finishes, Christensen produces some of the most luxurious superyachts in the U.S. That’s thanks in part to the builder’s in-house design team. Many other builders outsource design. Plus, the builder is known for its exquisite interiors, featuring spacious layouts and the finest finishes. Christensen also regularly wins innovation awards for their efficient and powerful displacement systems and state-of-the-art stabilization.

2. Westport

Since 1964, Westport has been a leader in yacht design and manufacturing in the U.S. And its earned a reputation for developing sporty, classically-styled superyachts.

That wasn’t always the case. Originally, Westport designed and built commercial fishing vessels, but today, Westport focuses exclusively on luxury motor yachts, including 34-, 38-, 40- and 50-meter yachts. Westport’s raised pilothouse and tri-deck yachts feature classic nautical hulls with modern touches. The interiors are sleek and comfortable and known for their spacious outdoor deck areas.

3. Derecktor

Derecktor is one of the country’s oldest yacht builders. It was founded on Long Island, NY in 1947, and during its early years, the company produced commercial fishing and passenger vessels. (Even today, Derecktor manufacturers high-speed ferries for cities around the world.)

Derecktor’s output has changed quite a bit in its 70-year history. Today, the company continues to build commercial vessels, but it’s also a top builder of custom motor yachts. Derecktor produces both explorer yachts and motor yachts, and many of its luxury motor yachts feature explorer-inspired designs. Many Derecktor yachts, for example, feature towering superstructures positioned forward. This opens up an abundance of aft-deck space for outdoor dining areas, beach clubs, and even helipads.

In addition to style, Derecktor yachts are renowned for their performance. They might be sizable. But they’re fast, and the ride is stable.

4. Hatteras

Hatteras is a legendary name in American shipbuilding, known for its high-speed and beautiful motor yachts. Initially, the shipyard focused entirely on sportfish yachts – something they’re still known for today. Yet, the company’s line-up of motor yachts offers the best of the best in luxury yachting.

Hatteras offers a full range of superyachts, including the 100 RPH, a stunning 102-foot raised pilothouse motoryacht, and the M90. Hatteras certainly shows its sporty roots in all of its designs; Hatteras exteriors are sleek and streamlined, sharing design details with its sportfish line.

At Trinity , size is the name of the game. The Gulfport-based shipyard produces yachts up to 123 meters (400 feet), including some of the largest luxury yachts ever built in the U.S.

The yachtbuilder has many signatures. For example, classic nautical architecture is one. Trinity produces some of the most inspiring superstructure designs that feature sleek lines and an abundance of glass. When you charter a Trinity yacht, you’ll have plenty of places to relax, as most of their designs incorporate an abundance of deck space. In the past, that’s include beautiful sky lounges and sprawling aft-deck dining/bar areas.

Below deck, Trinity yachts delivers spacious layouts. The yachtbuilder is know for their opulent owner’s suites and staterooms, as well as stunning salons.

6. Broward Marine

Founded by legendary boatbuilder Frank Denison in the 1950s, Broward Marine has been a leader in superyacht design throughout its history. For example, in 1954, Broward launched its first luxury superyacht, ALISA V. At the time, the 96-footer was a behemoth – similar in grandness to today’s megayachts of 150+ feet.

The Alisa paved a path for the company, which shifted its focus exclusively to luxury motoryachts. In the 1980s, for example, Broward was quick to respond to the trend of the superyachts; Broward sold some 80 yachts in the 1980s, an impressive sales feat.

Under new management in the early 2000s, the company continued its focus on stunning megayachts in the 100- to 160-foot range. Broward yachts are grand in scale, with stunning tri-deck and raised pilothouse designs, and they’re also some of the first to feature farmhouse kitchens. Today, the company focuses primarily on refits, but many of their majestic yachts are still available for charter.

7. Hargrave

Hargrave has been producing yachts since the 1950s, and throughout its history, the shipyard has built a reputation for inspiring yacht designs. In fact, the company initially only focused on design. Founder Jack Hargrave, the famed nautical designer, worked closely with other top U.S. yacht builders including Burger and Hatteras, helping to launch numerous brands.

In 1997, the company transitioned from design to designing and building its own luxury yachts. The company quickly made a name for itself. Hargrave has won numerous awards for its sporty tri-decks and sportfish-inspired motoryachts. Hargrave yachts feature contemporary interiors, matched with sleek profiles.

A Horizon yacht has a distinctive look. The company’s yachts have stately exteriors with tons of classic nautical architectural details. Inside, too, Horizon yachts have a lot of character. Most Horizon yachts feature sprawling windows, creating light and airy interior spaces.

Today, the company produces yachts in the 56- to 150-foot range, and their offerings include power catamarans, tri-decks and raised pilothouse motor yachts.

If you’re looking for a power cat, that’s a Horizon specialty. The company’s PC Series features a range of mid-sized power cats up to about 80 feet, with numerous concept yachts in the works. Yet, Horizon does it all. You’ll find Horizon yachts in just about any style, from Fast Displacement yachts (FD Series), to customized tri-decks (CC Series).

The Burger Boat Company is one of the most historic shipbuilders in the U.S. Originally launched in 1863, the company has built more than 500 yachts in its history (more than 250 of which are still in operation). The company was a pioneer in steel yacht building, but today, Burger primary builds aluminum yachts.

Burger produces a range of custom tri-deck motor yachts, ranging from 112- to 214-foot motor yachts. Burger boats have a distinctive look and feel. They have spacious deck areas, like the wrap-around deck on its current 214-foot tri-deck concept, as well as innovative exterior lounge areas.

10. Delta Marine

For more than 50 years, Delta Marine has been producing world-class motor yachts from its headquarters in Seattle. The boatbuilder is known for its sleek exterior designs. Delta Marine yachts feature clean, flowing lines throughout, and the company produces a range of raised pilothouse and tri-deck motor yachts.

Plus, the interiors are completely custom. As such, no two Delta Marine yachts look the same, and the interiors are as unique as their owners. Delta yachts are also well-known for their performance. Many feature performance-minded hulls, and feature state-of-the-art displacement systems.

Giorgio Armani's 236-foot Admiral superyacht is using new interior and exterior design rules developed by Armani, based on his ownership of two other superyachts.

Armani’s first yacht was a 164-foot Codecasa called Mariù —named after his mother—and delivered in 2003. Overseeing the exterior design, Armani chose a charcoal-gray hull and gave the yacht matte, stainless-steel fittings to differentiate it from the flashy white boats dotted in the Mediterranean ports.

Five years later, he went bigger with a second Codecasa, the 213-foot Maìn —named after his mother’s childhood nickname—which was delivered in 2008. He painted the entire exterior a dark shade of green to camouflage his presence at sea. He also focused on the onboard experience by introducing more sunbathing and dining areas to make it “feel like a house.”

Armani also requested the windows run in a continuous line along the boat to give large panoramic views, almost as though the boat had no walls.

For his third yacht, due to deliver in September 2024, Armani has gone bigger still, but has kept the build in Italy at Admiral’s Marina di Carrara facilities . “Armani is synonymous with timeless elegance and sophistication,” said Giovanni Costantino, CEO and founder of The Italian Sea Group, in a statement. “Project Metamorphosis, which combines technology and excellence in design with the distinctive features of Armani, will give us great satisfaction.”

In keeping with his previous builds, Armani mandated a wealth of hidden details to give the yacht an understated beauty, including inconspicuous cap rails, hidden lighting and a lot of glass. The light-filled interior is defined by hand-crafted finishes, earthy-toned linens and loose furniture by Armani/Casa.

“Project Metamorphosis pairs lots of exterior space with amazing interior volume, but most noteworthy is the yacht’s proximity to the sea,” Michel Chryssicopoulos, global managing partner at IYC, which has project managed the entire build, told Robb Report . “The large platform aft can be used as a bathing area for relaxation, but also accommodates large groups for outdoor dining and starlit parties.” The sea-level beach club is where guests will enjoy waterside relaxation. On the main deck aft, there are multiple lounge areas, some covered and others open to the elements. Onboard amenities include a cinema and dedicated games area on the bridge deck, a jacuzzi and firepit on the sun deck and multiple outdoor dining areas. There is a gym, a spa with sauna, steam shower and treatment rooms, and discreet meeting rooms for when Armani is conducting business at sea.

The owner’s deck is a personal sanctuary where Armani can retreat for some quiet time. It enjoys an owner’s suite, dining area, bar and lounge. It leads directly to a counter-current swimming pool for fitness workouts, a sunbathing area and intimate nooks for morning coffee or sundowner cocktails. There are six guest suites on the main deck and accommodations for a crew of 20. “An owner’s deck of this size is rarely found on private superyachts and draws on Armani’s personal experience of owning a vessel,” says Costantino. “It allows for a private escape within a floating oasis—the epitome of the yachting lifestyle.”

Armani presented the interior of Project Metamorphosis alongside his 2023 spring/summer men’s and women’s fashion collections recently at Milan Fashion Week. “The sea and design are two of my greatest passions,” he said. “With this new collaboration, I have extended my idea of furnishing and decor to the nautical world, in which—just as in fashion—aesthetics and functionality come together in a natural and elegant style.”

Beginning and end of the yacht America

Published on December 4th, 2019 by Editor -->

With the frequent sighting of the yacht America on San Diego Bay, well-handled and beautiful under sail, the history of the America’s Cup is never far from view. In this report by Dr. Hamish Ross , he provides the detailed version.

On the 15 November 1850, George Schuyler on behalf of a syndicate of five, including himself and Commodore John Cox Stevens and William Brown, signed a contract to build a New York pilot schooner for the Great Exhibition, due to be opened by Queen Victoria in Hyde Park, London on Thursday 1 May 1851. The contract was for $30,000.00, conditioned on her being the fastest yacht in the United States. Unfortunately, she was delivered a month late and failed to defeat Commodore Stevens’ Maria during her trials. Left with the prospect of selling a failed yacht and in deep financial trouble, Brown had little option but to accept a ‘take it or leave it’ price reduction of $10,000.00 by Schuyler.

During the building, her owner’s plans for England changed and the America would be diverted to the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) in Cowes after an invitation was received from RYS Commodore, the 2nd Earl of Wilton, inviting the owners to enjoy the hospitality of the Squadron during the yachting season.

The Earl had been born Thomas Grosvenor, the second son of the Marquess of Westminster (the title was later elevated to a dukedom in 1874 – the last non-royal dukedom to be created). Wilton served as Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron for thirty-two years between 1849 to 1881.

On 22 August 1851, America raced against 15 yachts in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s “all nations” race around the Isle of Wight. America won, finishing 8 minutes ahead of the closest rival. After 1851, the America went through a number of owners, including service as a Confederate blockade runner under the name of the Memphis, being scuttled in Jacksonville, later raised to serve in the US Navy, and was raced by the Navy in the 1870 America’s Cup fleet race match (winning fourth place).

She was sold into private ownership in 1873 to Benjamin Butler, a controversial Union Army Major-General and later a colorful politician and lawyer. Under Butler’s ownership, the America underwent two major refits in 1875 and again in 1885.

She was donated to the US Navy in 1921 and was towed to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, as an on-water exhibit, where her condition gradually decayed. The onset of the Great Depression delayed the expenditure of an estimated $80,000.00 for a necessary refit.

Charles Francis Adams Jr., the America’s Cup winning skipper of Resolute in 1920, great-great grandson of the second US President John Adams, great grandson of the sixth President, John Quincy Adams, serving as the Secretary of the Navy, felt unable to approve the expenditure of such money in 1930 during the onset of the Depression.

She was classified as a Navy relic in 1941 (IX-41) and hauled out at the Annapolis Yacht Yard for work. Some preliminary was carried out on her from time to time, mainly stripping her back to sound timbers, but only around other more urgent work which took precedence.

The outbreak of the Second World War further delayed any thoughts of a determined restoration and her fate was sealed after a shed in which she was being housed in Annapolis collapsed during a severe snowstorm on the night of Palm Sunday, 29 March 1942.

The America being towed to Annapolis on what was to be her last voyage in 1921

When the War ended, the Navy was forced to cut back from its wartime budget and was busy decommissioning many of its ships. Nostalgia was in short supply in 1945 when it came to preserving famous ships. Her end was sealed on 20th November 1945 when the US Navy signed an order for her scrapping, when faced with a repair bill of $300,000.00.

The Navy received $990.90 for the scrapping of an icon.

One of the last photographs of the remains of the America before she was scrapped in 1945.

Many pieces of the America were souvenired and every now and then, pieces of the America come on the market, but rather like a ‘grandfather’s hammer’, it is rather hard to know if any piece offered dates from 1851 or was added later during one of its many refits. It is said, like relics of the ‘cross’, there are more pieces of wood claiming to be from the America than in a New England forest.

Three replicas of the America have been built. They were built in 1967 (Boothby, Maine), 1995 (Albany, New York), and in 2005 (Varna, Bulgaria) with varying degrees of authenticity some having an additional four feet of beam to increase accommodation and additional skylights. The first two are based in the US and the latter in Rostock, Germany sailing as the Skythia.

The America, the most famous yacht in the history of the sport of sailing, has bequeathed us a competition which represents the pinnacle of the sport in terms of technology, design, sailing skill, management, all these necessarily infused with smart strategic and tactical planning and execution, in which only the very best will win.

UPDATE 1 (Dec. 5, 2019) : Troy Sears, who owns and sails the replica in San Diego, CA, provides an update on the three boats:

The 1967 replica, commonly known as the “Rudy Schaefer” boat that you correctly state being built in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, was broken up several years ago due to rot. She spent most of her later years of her life in the Med, mostly in Barcelona and Genoa. She was a full-sized replica.

The Bulgarian replica, Skythia, is a fractional replica being about 60 tons as compared to ours which is 113 tons. I would say her design was inspired by the America but not so much a replica.

There are no original drawing available so nobody can be certain of the actual dimensions, but ours is thought to be as accurate as possible in terms of size. Also, I am happy to say that we are totally rot free and as long as I take good care of her, she will outlive me.

UPDATE 2 (Dec. 12, 2019): Marcello Grimaudo, who is Captain of the 1967 replica (below), informed us  the yacht is still sailing and in good shape but is now on drydock in Italy for a major restoration.

Schooner America 2.0

The Schooner America 2.0

April 22, 2015 by [email protected]

Schooner America 2.0 stern shot of the boat in front of the Statue of Liberty during the day

This stunning, black-hulled, 105-foot sailing yacht is a tribute to the first Schooner America — winner of the first America’s Cup in 1851. America 2.0 joined the fleet in 2011.  An open deck features comfortable seating and bar service for up to 76.  An open salon below features a full service galley and two marine restrooms.

Aboard America 2.0, the past meets the future both above deck and below deck.  The “2.0” aspect of the vessel refers to the modern and eco-friendly nature of both her cutting-edge construction materials and her propulsion system.

In her ‘engine room’, there is a large battery bank system providing electric propulsion. Peel away her hull and rather than finding heavy fiberglass or steel, there is an extremely light and durable 3-layered composite: a sandwich of cedar over balsa core, laminated with an epoxy resin. Rather than a heavy wooden rig aloft, one finds carbon-fiber masts, booms and gaffs. Together, these strengthening and lightening components of construction, coupled with her modernized power-sourcing, America 2.0 is provided with the ability to move through the water more effortlessly, efficiently and with minimal environmental impact.

The Schooner America 2.0 operates in NYC May through October and in Key West, FL November through May. She is Coast Guard Certified for up to 85, however see recommended numbers for private events)

“Beautiful, Unique, Classic NYC Experience I couldn't recommend this trip more. I am a local but have never sailed on the Hudson. The boat was beyond beautiful. The crew was super fun, knowledgeable, and cool. We went on a Tuesday night and there were only 10 other people on the trip so it felt like a private charter. Sunset along the Hudson with the light reflecting off the buildings is any photographer's dream. The complimentary drinks and blankets were just the cherry on the sundae. I would recommend to any and all, and I would totally do it again. Great company, great boat, great crew. Fun for a couple or a big group of friends!” ~ Sunset Cruise Customer
“Wonderful experience with both view and crew. Lived in New York all my life and never knew about this company. What a wonderful experience we had on my husband's 52nd birthday and with 22 yo daughter and boyfriend. All of us had an amazing time; views to die for and great customer service from Captain and crew! Check marked item off my husband's bucket list—sailing around Manhattan! Highly recommend to all interested in a "new" way to spend time with family and friends sharing good wine and beer! Don't forget to bring your favorite cheese and crackers!” ~ America 2.0 Customer

NYYC American Magic celebrates the launch of its one-design AC40

attore americano yacht

On Tuesday afternoon, New York Yacht Club American Magic held a ceremony at its team base to reveal its new AC40, "America," the multi-use foiling monohull that all teams will use for testing and racing this summer in the initial preliminary regattas for the 37th America's Cup.

The team's first AC40 was christened by New York Yacht Club Rear Commodore Clare G. Harrington at the team's Pensacola base.

"AC40 America fulfills a brand new concept, that of providing a platform not only for the testing for our America's Cup campaign but also so younger sailors of both genders can develop their skills in these highly complex foiling machines. And so ensure the future of our sport way beyond the present America's Cup campaign cycle," said Commodore Harrington, addressing a crowd of team members, friends, and partners.

attore americano yacht

NYYC American Magic President of Sailing Operations/Skipper, Terry Hutchinson, said, "Today's a good day for New York Yacht Club American Magic; we christened our first AC40' America'. America is the yacht that started this entire adventure that we're on, and so it's exciting to name our first AC40 after the New York Yacht Club boat that captured and won the first America's Cup.

The new AC40 one-design yachts are foiling monohulls, 11.3 meters in length, and capable of reaching high speeds in the high 40-knot bracket. In addition, they are incredibly maneuverable and agile, making them ideal match-racing platforms.

"America" will be launched this week, and testing and development will begin in earnest. Later this summer in Barcelona, Spain, NYYC American Magic will begin two-boat testing with a second AC40.

"What we're going to see on the water is a boat that's a lot livelier and more fun for the sailors to sail. It will be exciting to watch the guys race two of these AC40s against each other," Hutchinson said. "What I look forward to with this boat is the racing side, the foil-development side, and then also looking at the simplicity of how the boats set up and seeing how well they can race it."
