At 285 feet long, Greg Norman’s new yacht is like his own personal portable island – or country. Possibly the largest aluminum yacht ever built, the $70 million “Aussie Rules” was built by Oceanfast and features anything you could want.

Whether or not this thing comes with an 18-hole golf course built in, I know who I want to invite me on their next fishing trip.

Update: Over the years, Norman has owned a veritable armada of sport-fishing vessels and pleasure cruisers.  The yacht no longer belongs to Norman; he sold it for a reported $77 million. But don’t think he couldn’t buy another if he wanted. Bottom line: If you want to travel the seas like this Shark, you’re going to need a bigger boat.

Most people know two things about Tiger Woods' yacht: It's big, and it is named Privacy . As you would expect from someone who names his boat Privacy , Woods has never revealed much information about his yacht. But we can put together a profile of the yacht based on other sources of public information about it.

How Big Is Woods' Yacht?

There are some basics about the Woods' yacht that are known to be true. For example, it's 155 feet long. That's a big boat for an individual owner, but it's nowhere near the size of the biggest yachts on the seas (which top 500 feet in length), and it's not even the biggest yacht owned by a golfer: Greg Norman has a yacht that is nearly 230 feet in length.

Woods bought his yacht from Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., for a reported $20 million. According to Power and Motor Yacht magazine, Tiger's yacht is a "155 Trideck Motor Yacht known as Hull 026."

(Ironically, the shipbuilders of Woods' Privacy allegedly violated the golfer's privacy, according to a subsequent lawsuit that Woods filed against Christensen. Woods claimed in his suit that the shipbuilders, contrary to agreement, used Woods' name and photos to promote their business. MSNBC.com reported in 2006 that the suit was settled in Woods' favor for $1.6 million.)

Woods took delivery of his yacht in time for his wedding to Elin Nordegren in 2004; the couple spent their wedding night aboard the Privacy . The Palm Beach Post has reported that it was Nordegren, prior to the wedding, who made most of the interior decorating choices for the boat.

Tiger's yacht is docked at a marina in North Palm Beach, Fla. (It is believed that Tiger Woods' house in Jupiter Island, Fla., has enough room on its Intracoastal Waterway frontage to berth Woods' yacht, although, as far as we know, Woods has never docked it there.)

Amenities, Crew and More Details About Woods' Yacht

Power and Motor Yacht magazine has reported that the Privacy has a 12,000-gallon fuel tank that will take the boat 4,000 miles, with a top speed of 17 knots.

The yacht is reported to have 6,500 square feet of living and work space and a capacity to sleep up to 21 people in a master suite and five guest rooms. It includes, according to various sources, a gym and theater, and carries multiple watercraft such as jet skis. It takes a crew of nine to operate.

People magazine has reported of Woods' yacht that it "offers all the comforts of home and then some: a 2,000-gallon water tank, five guestrooms, a Jacuzzi, a gym, an elevator, a sky-lounge bar, a walk-in refrigerator, a deck dining area that seats 12, and two built-in wall safes."

That's a nice boat!

Tiger's Other Boat: The Solitude

Woods also owns another boat, a 61-footer named Solitude . The Solitude is a dive boat: a boat scuba diving enthusiasts use to to get out to their diving destinations. It's not a yacht, in other words, but it's a good guess that as dive boats go the Solitude is a mighty fine one. It was custom built, according to People Magazine , for a cost of from $2 million to $3 million, by a company named Garlington Landeweer Marine. According to the magazine, the Solitude is docked at Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, about 10 minutes from Woods' estate in Jupiter Island, Fla.

Greg Norman's 87ft Oceanfast Aussie Rules for sale

Aussie rules, the 87ft oceanfast sportfish designed for expedition fishing, now for sale on our sites.

We have to go back 20 years to when our Marine Editor was a callow youth to recount the launch of this stunning 87ft luxury Oceanfast Sportfish built in Western Australia for Greg Norman.

It was circa 1996 and David Lockwood was bestowed the honour of being the first and only Australian journalist to drive this impressive boat, designed with Greg "The Shark" Norman's considerable input.

The 87 footer was intended to spearhead a range of long-range Norman Sports Classic line game boats from 80-120 feet built by Oceanfast.

"I drove Aussie Rules fast down Sydney Harbour at daybreak, the MTUs roaring, the sound system blaring — some of the crew hadn't slept that night and the party was still going — as the towering boat in blue livery with red boot stripe cut an impressive figure before the weary Sydney ferries just booting up," he says.

"It might be two decades ago, but this was a highlight of a boating hack's career. I can close my eyes now and still feel the power... and the energy of the crew including "Flash" partying hard at 5.30am."

Those twin 1500hp MTU engines, and a 18,000-plus litre fuel supply, were central to this boat's design intent — expedition fishing, with luxurious living accommodations for extended periods on the ocean.

The boat has a 28-knot top speed (Lockwood says he reached that on the throttles), cruised at 23 knots and had an 800-1000nm range. Coming out of production US sportfishers, Norman wanted the ability to fish distant locations and Aussie Rules has apparently seen some of the world's hottest fishing spots over the years.

The custom fishing equipment includes a giant winch facing the transom door, huge fish box, lighted aquarium wells, Rupp triple spreader 41' outrigger, bait freezers, Murray Brothers helm chair, aft station, transom fish door with dive access and swim out, Marine Metal Fabrications tower and more.

The watersports and dive gear includes scuba gear storage, cockpit entrance, dive tank storage, bar fridge with ice maker, BBQ grill, rod stowage compartment under lounge, external head and shower and so on.

As things eventuated, this boat was the only model in the adventurous Norman Sports Classic line produced by Oceanfast Marine Group, one of Australia's largest shipbuilders at the time. The promising venture intended to build luxury sportfishers from 80 to 120 feet in length, but Oceanfast ran into financial trouble.

Norman believed there was a market for bigger sportfishers — time has proven him right — and he believed that he knew what people wanted in them.

Back in the mid-90s, Oceanfast CEO John Farrell told the Florida-based newspaper The Sun-Sentinel that Norman (who preferred to fish stand-up tackle) had firm ideas of what he wanted in his boat.

"All of the boats will be built with Greg Norman's name on them and with Greg Norman's input. Norman's influence will be most evident in the boat's size, lines and cockpit area.

"Greg is fanatical about the cockpit layout, the height of the combing, the location of the baitwell," Farrell said back then. "He also has a particular idea on style."

Aussie Rules was the showboat for the range that never eventuated. As such, it has a long list of features and equipment that you won't find on a production vessel. The loaded boat was selling for US$4.9m at the time, but has returned to the market with a US$1.89m asking price two decades later.

Now newly refitted, the interior sleeps 10, plus crew, while the decor — originally Australian silky oak — and updated AV electronics throughout the vessel are said to result in a fresh atmosphere.

At the time Lockwood drove it, Norman's captain Gary Stuve, who skippered The Shark’s boats for six years, said: "You're not going to catch a world-record blue [marlin) on 12-pound line, but it handles good enough that you can catch fish in it."

Greg Norman sells oceanfront Jupiter Island estate for $55M, then buys $12M Old Palm house

World Golf Hall of Famer Greg Norman and his wife, Kiki, have sold Tranquility, their sprawling Jupiter Island estate, for $55.1 million.

The 32,000-square-foot estate at 382 S. Beach Road in Hobe Sound sold on April 7. The buyer reportedly is the family of Les Wexner, chairman emeritus of L Brands, owner of Victoria’s Secret. Wexner also was under scrutiny a couple of years ago for his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a former financial advisor. 

The eight-acre Tranquility compound is a sprawling beach-to-Intracoastal Waterway enclave. It features 10 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, six half-bathrooms, two wine cellars, two pools, more than 170 feet of oceanfront and water frontage, and 370 feet of docking space   on the Intracoastal. A 150-foot yacht could dock at the property.

In addition to the main house, there's a pool house, tennis house, boathouse, carriage house, beach house plus a 5,000-square-foot basement.

Norman bought Tranquility in 1991 for $5 million. Since then, he has put it on the market, taken it off the market and done a major renovation.

The Normans put the property up for sale again in February for $59.9 million, landing a buyer only two weeks after the property was listed.

A Coldwell Banker spokeswoman confirmed the sale of the estate, which is not yet recorded in Martin County public records. However, an MLS listing on Monday afternoon included an update that the property had been sold for $55.095 million.

Jill Hertzberg, a real estate agent with The Jills Zeder Group at Coldwell Banker Realty, held the listing with colleague Michelle Thomson, of Coldwell’s The Thomson Team. 

Despite the sale, Norman and his wife continue to be Florida homeowners. 

Day after selling Jupiter Island home, Norman bought in Palm Beach Gardens

On April 8, the day after selling Tranquility, they turned around and paid $12.2 million for a home in Old Palm Golf Club, an exclusive private golf community in Palm Beach Gardens. The retired pro golfer, known as The Shark or The Great White Shark, beat back rival buyers to snare the coveted, double-lot home at 12227 Tillinghast Circle, real estate sources said.

Norman and his wife are doing a number of real estate trades in anticipation of a planned move to Australia, following a bout with COVID-19 last year, according to published reports.

Norman's new home in Old Palm is expected to be a second home for the golf great. It is much smaller than the Jupiter Island estate, but it still is luxurious.

The 11,837-square-foot house sits on two acres and features six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and two half-baths. The property also has a tennis court, guest house and a massive resort-style pool with a swim-up bar.

Rob Thomson of Waterfront Properties in Jupiter represented the Old Palm seller, Joseph Lashinger. A former casino executive, Lashinger bought the house for $5 million in 2009. He also bought an adjacent lot, where he built the the tennis court and pool, Palm Beach County property records show.

Thomson declined to comment on the sale.

But speaking generally, Thomson described Old Palm as a lushly landscaped community filled with palm trees that evoke the feel of Palm Beach. It is very private, with many of its homes nestled either amid woods or on the community's private golf course, which was designed by retired pro golfer Raymond Floyd.

It is also a small community consisting of only 294 homes.

Connie McGinnis, Old Palm director of sales, represented Norman in the deal. He did not return a phone call seeking comment on Monday. Norman also did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Norman will be neighbors with Dr. Ben Carson, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods' ex 

Norman's new home in Old Palm is on the same street where Dr. Ben Carson, former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary under President Donald Trump, lives with his wife, Candy, at 12248 Tillinghast Circle.

Other notable Old Palm residents include pro golfer Ernie Els, who lives at 12402 Hautree Court. Another neighbor is Elin Nordegren, the ex-wife of golf legend Tiger Woods. In September, Nordegren paid $9.4 million for a home at 12251 Tillinghast Circle.

The real estate deals follow Norman's well-publicized bout with COVID-19 last year. Norman was hospitalized with the virus and later urged people to take the disease seriously.

In January, he told Stellar magazine, an Irish publication, that he wanted to return to Australia after his battle with COVID.

"I want to get back to Australia as soon as I can," Norman said.

Since then, the athlete-turned-businessman has been busy selling his two U.S. residential compounds.

In March, he unloaded his Seven Lakes ranch in Meeker, Colorado, for $52 million, one year after listing it for $60 million. He bought the 12,000-acre ranch in 2004 for $12 million.

Norman has won more than 90 tournaments worldwide, including two Open Championships, and he holds the distinction of having defended his No. 1 position in the world golf rankings for 331 weeks, the second-longest reign in history. In 2001, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame with a higher percentage of votes than any other inductee in history. 

In recent years, Norman has become a busy entrepreneur. He leads the Greg Norman Company, which has designed more than 100 golf courses across six continents. A bit of renaissance man, Norman also produces wine, makes golf-inspired apparel and has his own brand of prime Wagyu beef, Greg Norman Australian Prime.

They "cringe" at the word budgeting, said Winnie Sun, co-founder of Sun Group Wealth Partners, based in Irvine, California.

"It's sort of like telling someone they need to diet and eat healthy," said Sun, a member of CNBC's Advisor Council . "It's a very overwhelming concept for the average consumer."

About 68% of consumers say a budget would help them reach their personal and family goals, yet 40% say they have never had a budget, according to a poll by the CFP Board, which oversees the certified financial planner designation, published in 2019.

Sun estimates more than 60% of her clients "feel as if they're literally going to suffer" if Sun mentions budgeting.

Conversations around budgeting are generally distilled into two camps: spending on needs (i.e., essential items) and wants (nonessential items).  

This framework is meant to help weigh one's financial priorities, thereby keeping spending in check, wrote Sarah Newcomb, a behavioral economist at Morningstar.

But the exercise can turn budgeting into a feeling of deprivation — and people rebel as a result.

The classic financial advice of slashing spending on wants such as entertainment, social connection, dating and education, for example, is at odds with "the natural process of human motivation," Newcomb wrote.

"Yes, the numbers must work, but your life must work, too," she wrote. "Otherwise, you'll internally resist your budget, and we all know how that can play out."

How you should reframe budgeting

Financial experts recommend reframing the budgeting concept as a positive rather than a negative.

For example, households can think of it as "raising funds" instead of cutting spending, Sun said.

They can also establish financial goals. For example, what do they want to do with their extra funds? That may be paying down debt, saving for the long term or growing a pot of money for shorter-term goals such as a vacation, Sun said.

"We let the goals lead the act of budgeting," she said.

"For me, a budget is not about restricting myself," Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, a personal finance expert known as the Money Coach, said during a Q&A with JPMorgan Chase and Essence. "It's about choosing how I allocate my resources and how I spend my money."

Similarly, Newcomb recommends identifying new strategies that can meet one's needs and simultaneously save money.

Newcomb gives the real-life example of a husband and wife who argued about how much money he spends on his boat each year. His needs are about self-actualization: He enjoys the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. She seeks safety and security, which are also important to her quality of life.

Here, the husband found a new strategy: offering sailing lessons to teens at his yacht club, which helped offset the cost of his boat and allowed his wife to funnel that additional income into savings.

There are other easy ways households can find extra money without sacrificing much, Sun said.

For example, households with more than one streaming service can opt to use one service for six months then change to another for the next six months, decreasing their streaming budget by 50%, she said.

Households with an ample emergency fund intact can consider shopping for auto and other insurance policies with a higher deductible than their current policy, likely lowering monthly premiums, Sun said. In the event of an insurance claim, the emergency fund can meet the deductible, she said.

They can also commit to doing curbside pickup when shopping for groceries, for example. Shoppers make purchases more mindfully and avoid in-store impulse buying, Sun said. She finds clients generally save 20% to 25% or more on their groceries this way.

Any additional cash flow can immediately be used to pay down debt, or go into long-term savings or toward a short-term goal, she said.

Ultimately, if there is a money issue, she challenges clients to decrease their spending by 5% to 10% during the month. After each week of success, she encourages them to celebrate by making memories instead of debt: perhaps by doing something with friends, or hanging out at a park, beach or someone's backyard.

"You have to have a joy to replace that negative," she said.

The Untold Story Of How LIV Golf Almost Happened In The 1970s

In 1976, IMG founder Mark McCormack called a Saturday morning meeting—something he rarely did. Even more mysterious was that he gave no agenda for the meeting.

When the small group of us sat down, Mark said, “I have a secret new project to share with you: the Second Tour.” He’d actually had the idea since 1964, and had documented it in his 1967 biography of Arnold Palmer, but he’d now developed it in much greater detail.

He’d thought of everything: an elite field of the world’s best players, more prize money, fewer tournaments per year, events in every major international market, a season-ending championship. Even health benefits and a pension plan for the players, things the PGA Tour didn’t offer. It really could work. The best part, Mark believed, was that those who chose to defect to this Second Tour could have their cake and eat it, too. They’d still be able to play in the four major championships, as those events, in order to maintain the strength of their fields, would want and need the Second Tour players.

Mark told us his idea had germinated well past the theoretical stage. Funding was there from a major corporation, the networks were ready to bid on television rights, a commercial airline was prepared to charter the players, and a major hotel chain was on board to offer accommodations.

After that meeting, strangely, nothing happened. I suspect that Mark made another run at Arnold, as he had in 1964, to gauge his interest and that, once again, A.P. said no. And there was another reason the time was not right for a second tour. At that moment, the PGA Tour was doing a pretty good job of reinventing itself under Deane Beman, who, through a combination of entrepreneurial vision, hard-nosed negotiating and just plain smarts, revolutionized modern professional golf, wrenching it from its mom-and-pop roots into a dazzlingly profitable business. (During his 20-year tenure as commissioner, the PGA Tour’s assets would grow from $400,000 to $260 million.)

I never forgot about Mark’s concept, though. More than once during the course of my 11 years as Greg Norman’s agent, I shared with him the details: the elite field, the limited number of events, the huge purses, the TV and sponsorship aspects—all of it. As someone who loved playing golf around the world—and for lots of money—Greg was mesmerized by the concept every time we talked about it.

Imagine my surprise in 1994—one year after Greg fired me—seeing him pontificate about “his” concept for a world tour. “I had this idea: How do we get the best players to play against each other on more of a regular basis and give them an annuity into the future? I just thought there was a better way, a World Golf Tour where they could have ownership. That’s thinking outside the box. Like an entrepreneur. Understanding the marketplace.”

The blueprint Greg laid out, in alliance with tournament operator John Montgomery, could have been photocopied from Mark’s manifesto.

And just like Mark’s idea, it never happened. In his haste to launch the idea, with a press conference at his Shark Shootout tournament in November 1994, Norman made a major strategic error by trying to blindside the PGA Tour. At the last minute, tour officials got wind of what he was up to and preempted him, holding a player meeting the day before his press conference during which several players spoke up against the idea. The overall tone was: “This is a bad idea, a Greg Norman idea that is about Greg Norman and for Greg Norman.”

But it was the man who spoke last and most passionately at that 1994 player meeting who ultimately killed the idea, just as he had twice before: Arnold Palmer. At age 65, he held the deep respect of every player in the room.

“Greg,” he began, “have you ever heard of the Big Three? How many times do you think we were approached with a plan like this? More than I can count. Do you know why we always said no? Because it would have been bad for the game and bad for the fellas. You guys are young and have a lot of golf in front of you. You can do what you think is best, but I don’t want any part of this.”

And with that he rose and walked out of the room.

Norman claimed to be stunned by Arnie’s remarks. “I had never had a conversation with him about any of this prior to his speech. It was one of the most disappointing moments of my life,” he wrote in his autobiography, The Way of the Shark . Clearly he’d forgotten, or more likely chosen to dismiss, my telling him years earlier of Arnold’s long-standing opposition to the World Tour—such would have been consistent with Greg’s arrogance.

It was an embarrassing setback for Greg, and he would harbor a bitter animus toward the PGA Tour for more than a quarter-century before resurfacing with his idea three years ago, this time under the guise of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. And this time he would enjoy 18 months of fleeting, artificial success before suffering the greatest public humiliation of his life, when during a Congressional hearing it was revealed that his dismissal as CEO of LIV Golf would be a mandatory condition of any PGA Tour agreement with the Saudis.

Norman, swaggering narcissist he is, has always loved commanding the arena. Being the world’s best player fueled his ego, but ultimately I believe golf was primarily a means to an end for him, a way for him to acquire luxury homes, Ferraris, airplanes, yachts and fame by wheeling and dealing in business. He went at these extracurricular pursuits full bore, perhaps as an alternative scorecard to make up for his golf achievements falling short of expectations.

Certainly, no individual in the game of golf has ever been aligned more perfectly with the motives of the Saudis: power, money and image burnishing. And as the most polarizing superstar the game has produced, he’s the perfect leader of the renegade LIV circuit. Greg has always been a disrupter, someone who perceived enemies, beginning with a father who disapproved of his becoming a golf pro and thereby became estranged from him, and continuing through a succession of business managers that included me, along with three or four caddies and three wives. His attitude has always been: “It’s me against the world. I’ll get back at you all, prove you wrong.”

Moscow gets a much needed facelift. But is it worth the cost?

Russia's capital is finally seeing the fruits of its 3-year, $2 billion beautification campaign – and the results are impressive. But critics still abound, arguing that the public was underconsulted and the project overpriced.

Moscow is a city that's notorious for its grand, overpowering architecture. Modernizing and humanizing it by enabling public access and convenience is no small task.

But that is what the $2 billion My Street project launched by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin is attempting to do.

And depending on who you ask, the massive remaking is either a magical transformation that shows this glorious, ancient city arising Cinderella-like from its Soviet-era rags, or else it's an endless source of dust, noise, and traffic snarls, as well as a giant trough of public funds for greedy officials and construction magnates to wallow in. (And in Russia's far-flung provinces, you will only hear complaints about the exorbitant resources lavished on Russia's narcissistic capital at the expense of everyone else.)

Some of Moscow's major downtown thoroughfares have been closed for months at a time and completely dug up , bringing howls of outrage from local residents and businesses whose lives were disrupted. Outdoor kiosks, small businesses selling everything imaginable that proliferated after the collapse of the USSR, have been almost completely cleared from city streets. Moscow traffic, always verging on paralytic, sometimes became an intolerable nightmare; road rage incidents multiplied.

But over the past year or so, Muscovites have seen many of those same streets re-emerge from the construction hoardings with broad, tree-lined sidewalks, benches, flower beds, bicycle lanes, and traffic islands. Some have been transformed completely into pedestrian malls. Archaeological discoveries turned up by the works have made headlines and some have been turned into permanent outdoor museum displays. And residents seem more happy with the transformation than not.

“This had to be done a long time ago. It is long overdue,” says Nikolai Shumakov, president of the Russian Union of Architects. “There are some defects, of course. But these changes are basically welcome.”

Remaking the city

It's the newest iteration of Moscow, a city that has been overhauled many times in the past century. Ever since the Bolsheviks opted to move the capital here from St. Petersburg following the 1917 Revolution, Moscow has been the canvas for successive Communist leaders to impose their own visions of what the “capital of world socialism” should look like – often by ripping down some of the city's oldest neighborhoods.

Employing the labor of German prisoners of war, Joseph Stalin built the seven enormous “wedding cake” skyscrapers that still hover over central Moscow. Nikita Khrushchev demolished a vast swath of the ancient Arbat district to make way for a broad avenue lined with domino-like office towers, now known as New Arbat . Later Soviet leaders bequeathed cold, utilitarian public buildings, and the endless vistas of high-rise tenements that stretch to the city limits and house Moscow's teeming millions.

Today, the outlines of Vladimir Putin's Moscow are just coming into full focus. The Moscow City Center project, a gaggle of wildly shaped modern glass office towers resembling London's Canary Wharf, is testimony to the yet-unfulfilled Putin-era hopes of transforming Moscow into a global financial center.

It falls to Mr. Sobyanin, mayor since 2010, to apply the finishing touches. In addition to the My Street project, he has initiated a sweeping, controversial program to demolish thousands of old Soviet-era tenements and move their residents into new housing. Moscow has also seen a major expansion of its metro system, and the inauguration of a rapid transit network and several new expressways on his watch.

Next to the Kremlin, on the site once occupied by the giant, crate-shaped Rossiya Hotel, Moscow's first new park in 50 years is wowing visitors. Called Zaryadye, after an ancient district behind Red Square's market stalls, the $250-million park features vegetation from four separate Russian eco-zones, an underground concert hall, and a platform over the Moscow River that affords unprecedented views of the Kremlin and the city's historic river embankments.

In what looks like a typical Russian paradox, the park almost immediately had to be fenced-in, and now can be entered only via metal detectors and police searches, after it was vandalized within days of its opening .

Political implications

Polls show that inhabitants of Moscow increasingly like the project's growing results, which bodes well for the energetic mayor, Sobyanin, who faces re-election in less than a year.

“Focus groups show that the majority of Moscow's population support these changes,” says Alexei Makarkin, deputy director of the independent Center for Political Technologies in Moscow. “They like the fact that there are fewer cars, more sidewalks, more greenery. So, the wishes of the authorities and the population appear to be aligned. Opponents of the project object to this modernization from above. They believe the most important issue is that people aren't consulted, and the changes were not agreed with local communities.”

That does have political implications, he says. In last month's municipal elections, downtown Moscow districts – including those most affected by the renovations – surprised the establishment by electing large numbers of a liberal opposition bloc to local councils. These districts are traditional bastions of middle-class opposition, so the voting may not be a direct response to the city works. But authorities will now have to face much more focused criticism from newly elected deputies.

“Part of the opposition regards anything the authorities do as incompetent, and an excuse for corruption, and they are now sitting inside the councils,” says Mr. Makarkin.

‘Same country in a different way’

Not everyone agrees the beautification project is for the best. “Of course it's good to improve our city,” says Nikolai Lyzlov, a Moscow architect. “But I don't like it when everything is done to a single standard, in one style, by one company, everywhere and rapidly. Our city was created over centuries, every district has a different atmosphere, and here it is being homogenized. It would be so much better to do this as a slow process, directed by the municipalities and with the participation of citizens.”

And, although an astute reader of the Russian media can detect a distant sound of thunder, little heed has so far been paid to the growing chorus of voices across Russia's vast hinterland complaining of the disproportionate resources devoted to prettifying Moscow.

Although 40 Russian centers are currently undergoing urban renewal drives ordered by the Kremlin, the total budget for those cities, whose locations range from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean, is just $700 million. Moscow's My Street project alone costs $2 billion.

“We are also trying to make our city of Omsk better and more comfortable for life but, the thing is, we seem to live in the same country but in a different way,” says Sergei Kostarov, a professor of Omsk State University in western Siberia. “We can't help but notice that building Zaryadye Park in Moscow cost the same as our entire city budget. It just shows that the centralization of political power in Russia still results in the centralization of everything.”

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
