The Corinthian Plymouth

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Now don't get me wrong - this venue has stunning views and is very reasonably priced as a wedding venue. The food was outstanding and the size of the venue was perfect for what we needed. However, there are a few glaring organisational issues that... need to be addressed. Firstly, over the two years from putting our deposit down to the wedding day itself, we had three different wedding coordinators, with no email or handover between each one to let us know this had happened. People leave roles, we get it, but it would have been great to have been informed of this. However, the coordinator for the day was generally quite negative when we dropped things off and on the day of. She confused the timings by telling people that food was at 5, despite us repeatedly putting it as 5:30. When I questioned this on the day (after all the guests were seated for 5), I was told that food wouldn't be until 5:30?! Staff were a bit rubbish overall, with bar staff overheard saying that they wanted to have a go on the photo booth that we had paid for our guests to use. When they asked the wedding coordinator, she was overheard saying to wait until "guests had had more to drink and then they could". We then went through our poloroid guest book to find photos from the bar staff (these film cassettes are expensive and we only wanted them used by guests). The bar staff also had friends who were not working the wedding just sat at the bar, chatting to them. Overall, much to be improved. This venue has the potential to be absolutely incredible with a bit of basic customer service and common sense. A bit of a revamp is need in the toilets as well! More

I visited here with a large group of work colleagues. The starter of garlic mushrooms was nice but more cheesy than garlic, and not that hot. The main roast Turkey was nice but nothing special. Lovely view and nice big room but we're split over... 5 tables of 8,and although we had the room to ourselves it felt as though we were split up a bit. The staff were well organised though and we didn't have any real issues. Nothing special though. More

As has been well reviewed l too was present at the firework championship and yes it was unfortunately not a good experience but l understand new owners had taken over and were clearly not prepared for what happened, too many people in an area not... bug enough to cater for them. I must however compliment the management for the way they responded and we recievex full refund. I don't like to leave negative feed back as times ate tough enough but l hope next year they bypass the buffet idea and settle for set menus alongside only selling tickets for the amount of people who can comfortably congregate outside, l am aware that many couldn't actually see the firework display. Hopefully this learning curve will bring rewards for future events. More

Just arrived and came across this place. We ordered our drinks at the entrance which were brought to the table. Loved the view watching the yachts and boats and beyond. We ordered a mixed grill for two. Reflecting on some wonderful meals we had enjoyed... on Greek holidays we waited with baited breath and eager anticipation. The stage was set for a romantic meal Eventually it arrived we asked for salt and vinegar the salt arrived but no vinegar. We asked again by this time the chips and the mixed grill were cold as was the pitta bread. This has slot to live upto and we sincerely hope they get act together otherwise this venture will will hit the dust. More

We also attended the Corinthian on Wednesday 16th for a £30 (each) evening viewing fireworks with hot food and snacks available, venue advertised from 6 to midnight, arriving at 7.30 we were, to say the least, disappointed to find very little food left, a few... sandwich scraps, two warm trays of something in batter (not labelled). When asked if the buffet was going to be refreshed the staff decamped to the kitchen. There were several groups unhappy at the food situation and requested to see a manager, the manager blamed the voracious early arrivals and the only refreshing of the buffet that I saw prior to us decamping was a tray of oven chips. The venue had made little effort with seating/tables and as has been stated in other reviews the boatyard had more tables and seating and from what I could see a better view of the fireworks. In mitigation the management eventually agreed to reimburse those who chose to leave immediately (not a hardship). Think carefully if you should choose this venue for fireworks, or anything else, for that matter. Feel free to contact me if you would like further confirmation. I would say it was badly and careless organised but I would have to use the word organised which would be incorrect. Dreadful. More

I am writing to say how disappointed I was with the experience at the Corinthian tonight for the firework championship. £30 per ticket is not inexpensive - but I wanted to treat myself and my partner on our anniversary. On arrival around 715 there were... no chairs left and after queuing for the buffet only a few sandwiches and chicken nuggets remained. I thought more food would be made available but I gave up waiting. It feels disingenuous to sell tickets for the lower deck area for £12 and charge more than twice as much at £30 for a substandard buffet with no seating. It’s was extremely poorly organised. I can only imagine that earlier diners had eaten substantial amounts to get their moneys worth or you had grossly miscalculated the amounts required to cater for the people attending. It was ironic that I had a sandwich that I had brought with me confiscated at the door on the grounds that ‘plentiful food would be available’. Nothing could be further from the truth. I intend to publish this review on social media as I’m sure many others will. You are already aware how shambolic the evening was due to the multiple complaints made in person by guests at your venue. You were not apologetic and made little attempt to compensate guests for their negative experience. Rather you decided that you would allocate tokens for the buffet the next night!! The views may be amazing here but the service and value for money are appalling. Never again. And I’m a local….. as we’re many of the other disgusted customers. You owe people an apology. It was not good enough. Not even close. Please plan better and have a heart - £30 er person for very little buffet and inadequate seating is not good value at all. And blaming the earlier diners for overeating is not good enough either….. it is your responsibility to consider how you manage potential buffet binging and also proving seating for the 200+ guests. More

Couldn't agree more with Helen T. Phoned prior to booking to confirm that dairy free food would be available was informed that 70% of the buffet would be dairy free as she (the person who answered our query) was also dairy free she also confirmed... that the table was ours for the evening giving an impression all guests would have a table. Booked for the VIP experience at £30 per head. Arrived early and managed to get a table of which there were few. By the time we reached the buffet the majority of sandwiches had gone. The dairy free option was limited to salad and chips. The veggie labeled sandwiches had dairy cheese in them so unsuitable. Once the sandwiches were gone they were not replenished and hot food replenished in small quantities throughout the rest of the evening. Not all food items were labelled and none had ingredients. Asked several servers as to ingredients of various items and none appeared to know and swiftly departed back into the kitchen. One staff member actually replied that as I had a wrist band all food was free! (take it he must have misheard me) Got hold of the manager and ask to see the allergy lists so that we could decide on what was suitable but this list was not forthcoming. Very vague answers to what items may contain milk. Helen T assumes those at the front of the queue may have taken all the food, to which I say although some plates were piled high at the start I would expect this considering the time of day. People had come to be fed and not to have party nibbles. Looking around the tables all plates were empty no left over food anywhere. It appeared to me that those who had paid the £12 ticket had more tables available (although food was extra). The view of the fireworks was very good but unfortunately it does not put right the failings of the buffet. They had not anticipated that most diners would be coming for an evening meal quantity of food considering most arrived at 6pm. Would I book there again - definitely not More

Group of us met here to watch the fireworks. We sat and enjoyed the display..... The beer choice was poor and service slow despite the best efforts of some staff. We wanted some of the Greek street food on offer(?) but they were struggling to... cope. Over two hours after arrival we were asked if we wanted to order by which time we'd already left and gotten fed at other vendors and returned. When we originally arrived I'd already been disappointed by there being no vegan option or even an attempt to offer a vegan friendly version of the single veggie option (just remove the cheese???) If we come to Plymouth again for the fireworks, we'll find somewhere better to watch. More

Great venue, went to the boat yard outside area, sadly that's where it ends. Meals outside serves in polystyrene takeaway boxes, drinks in throwaway plastic cups, condiments all plastic sachets, service poor, no check to see if everything okay and did not come back with... some of the condiments requested. Dissapointing to see such plastic and polystyrene thrown away in this climate and from a sea front venue. Sadly will not return due o all of above Cost for 3 basic takeaway meals squid and chips x2, scampi and chips x1, one half pint beer, 2 drinks of cordial and soda £36. More

Our wedding was made extra special due to the hard work by the wedding planner. The "can do" attitude meant that all requests were dealt with efficiently and sensitively. The table lay out, seating and hygiene in these difficult times was dealt with in a... reassuring manner. The high tea was plentiful and served with impeccable timing. It was a fabulous day! More

£30 per a head for the firework championship event. 0 food. Lack of seating, it seems likely all the chairs were taken downstairs to the lower ticket price area because they DID promise seats there. Which the rude "manager" insisted we should have bought if... we wanted seats or a guarantee of food, in possibly the strangest incident of downselling instead of upselling I've ever seen. 0 manners or professionalism from management when confronted with a number of complaints. 0 value for money. You need only look at the other reviews from the same time frame to establish that the whole thing was a farce for many, the minority seemingly having attended an entirely different event. Running out of food on a promised buffet less than an hour into being open is insane. Won't ever be returning. One can hope whoever is above the management we dealt with realises something needs to be done. More

This function room was booked for my daughters 21st birthday party. We were dealing with a young man who sadly does not work at the Corinthian anymore The manager that we were dealing with is not really a people person. The communication is not the... best. However the bar staff were great. The whole place could do with a facelift as it does feel a little like a waiting room. Its a fantastic space with wonderful views. We just didn't have the best communications. When we returned on the Sunday to collect presents, cake etc.. We had to go via the other venue as the manager who was sat in the office couldn't hear us knocking on the door or calling through the letter box. He never asked if we had had a good time didn't really want any feed back. My tip to the Corinthian would be contact your customers to see if they want to keep their balloons or donate them to someone else.Maybe organise a time for collection beforehand, or be a bit more welcoming More

Fireworks word championship at the Corinthian was the best view I have ever had, location was brilliant and the staff couldn’t do enough. Was a busy night and all have some glitches, but dealt with very well. Heard people complain a lot about seating as... they turned up late and expected groups of seat to be left empty for them. Most customers were very understanding and made many new friends. Food was absolute top notch, would Definately do it again and take friends. Thanks all! More

Came here Saturday for a drink in the sunshine on armed forces day. There were 4 of us and we were showed to a table down by the sea of which we wanted, & then was told someone would take our drinks order shortly, after approximately... 10 minutes & getting the attention a numerous staff to no avail, we left. We were behind a couple who waited longer than us & didn't get served & there was a group behind us who waited for 30 minutes & didn't get served. The management team need to sort this out....we will not be returning in the future. More

I previously rated The Corinthian as very poor. That was a couple of years ago. So here we are Jan 2024 a double 21st party. We thought we would try again with different owners. Well what a turn around. Communication was great from start to... finish. I totally understand we are in difficult times and a refurb of the place would be costly. However the changes that have been made are great. Everything flows better and the tented ceiling is beautiful. I can imagine a wedding would be dressed beautifully here. I like the fact that Rae was on hand during the day to give us any assistance should we have needed it. In the evening plenty of bar staff that worked very hard. So all in all we can not fault the Corinthian at all. So thank you very much. We will definitely recommend you More

Plymouth's historic Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is set to go up for sale, but whilst that's happening, the club is staying open.

Built in 1688 as part of the Royal Citadel, the imposing property that has its own access to the water, has been used as a club house since 1896 and it is the first time on living memory it has ever gone on the market.

The yacht club is thought to be one of the last remaining privately owned freehold sites on the water’s edge in Plymouth Sound.  It has direct access to the water from its own dinghy park and has outstanding 180-degree views across the sea from Mount Batten to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.

The club, which has a bar and restaurant, offers up lunches, dinners and cream teas, and the space as a whole can be used for weddings, meetings and events.

royal corinthian yacht club plymouth menu

When asked what the future holds for bookings at the impressive space, a spokesperson for the club said: "We are still running business as normal opening from 10am - 5pm Monday - Sunday running an £8 menu Monday to Saturday and a carvery on Sundays, plus events.

"All events are all going ahead with our high standards being kept. We have had parties over the weekend and have Burns Night on January 25. We have just had new carpet fitted in our restaurant, [we are] looking forward to the future."

The building is looking for bids above the guide price of £750,000.

Michael Easton, director at JLL in Exeter, which is handling the sale, said: "The sale will attract considerable interest due to its truly outstanding position on the waterside.

"This is to secure the long-term future of the club and members will be looking for alternative premises, or to continue in some capacity in the existing building if the marketing programme allows for this."

The proposals have been given the go-ahead by council planning chiefs

The freehold title includes a waterfront dinghy park, changing facilities and the sailing office.

Mr Easton said: "We hope to attract interest far and wide. The club has been run both for its members and as a function and wedding venue for many years and is available as a trading venue with revenues of circa £400,000 per annum.

"There are approved plans to improve the access and visibility from Madeira Road which we feel will also be of some benefit to a future owner.

"With the people of Plymouth now looking ahead to the schedule of events taking place in Plymouth in 2020, where better could this be celebrated."

The property is available by informal tender with bids invited by no later than midday on March 15 2019. The business will continue to trade during the process.
