Investigating the disappearance of a second Pegasus rocket, American astronaut Capt. Frank Chapman is forced to land his spaceship on Rehton, a mysterious asteroid. Upon opening his space suit he is reduced in size by the atmospheric conditions and captured by a race of tiny people, ruled by Sesom. Liara, Sesom's daughter, is attracted to Chapman, but he becomes attached to Zetha, a mute. After befriending the jealous Herron, Liara's admirer, Chapman wins the respect of the Rehtons. The astronaut helps the tiny kingdom defend itself when unexpectedly attacked by the Solarites, an ancient enemy. Zetha, rescued by Chapman when she is abducted by a Solarite, regains her speech in the excitement. Donning his space suit, Chapman regains his normal size and returns to earth, realizing that his experiences on Rehton will not be believed.

Critic Reviews for The Phantom Planet

Audience reviews for the phantom planet.

This is the worst sci-fi ever! Plan 9 is a true masterpiece if compare with this. Poor Richard Kiel as the Solarite.

the phantom planet 1961 cast

This movie is stupid and nonsensical, the guy lands on some planet and shrinks to the tiny size of the rest of the people there, and they put him through some crazy trials and then need his help against their enemy, and other sci-fi type stuff happens, but you keep wondering what the point is and when the story is going to get anywhere, but it doesn't. This is a horrible movie.

Seems much longer than it actually is due to it being so incredibly boring. Like most sci-fi around this time, the "special effects" are cheesy and the story is dime-a-dozen and lame. Since it sucks, you can expect Richard Kiel to be in it somewhere...and there he is!

Anyone ever heard of Plan 9 From Outer Space? The most confused film ever created? Ed Wood's masterpiece? Often cited as the worst film of all time? Of course you have. And, well, if you enjoyed that, then this one surely is for you. Phantom Planet is a prime example of a screenwriter and a director who just made up what they were doing as they went along. Just plain silly. 08/100

Some cool ideas wrapped in a nice cheesy package, delivered with lackluster performances and weak direction. Still plently of bleepy bloopy stuff. A spaceship that looks like its hanging from a string. It hits a lot of the old school sci-fi bullet points and brings some weird originality but still seems to drag despite its minimal efforts.

Its decent background stuff if nothing else.

The Movies of Joe Dante's The Movie Orgy

In the distant future of 1980…

I'm not sure anything will top the comedic genius of Speed Crazy or College Confidential . Unlike those that appeared in The Movie Orgy , the acting isn't laughably bad and there isn't any hilarious memorable dialogue. What is laughably bad, however, is the design of their space suits. This was released the same year after Yuri Gagarin was the first person to be sent into space, so they could have made a more realistic space suit. They probably didn't know.

I can't explain what makes this so funny to me. It's a unique kind of stupid. You'll have to experience it for yourself. It may not be…

William Marshall’s science-fiction drama in which an astronaut discovers a population of tiny beings living on an invisible asteroid. Starring Dean Fredericks, Coleen Gray and Anthony Dexter.

After a few astronauts touch down on a massive asteroid, they find out its small residents being hurt by monsters. They decline in size and assist the residents to battle their adversaries.

Dean Fredericks and Richard Weber both give okay performances in their respective parts as Frank Chapman and Ray Makonnen, the captain and the lieutenant who don’t show a great deal of determination in attempting to defeat the monsters that are causing trouble.

Elsewhere, Coleen Gray as Liara, Anthony Dexter as Herron, Francis X. Bushman as Sessom, Jimmy Weldon as Lieutenant Webb…

Review by Vietcong ★★

The Phantom Planet is a different kind of B movie. It's lonely, isolated, and quiet, whereas the usual drive-in fare of the time was full of ridiculous dialogue and stupid characters begging for the audience's attention. There's a moment early in the film, when the protagonist is injured and his copilot drags him back inside the ship only to be hurdled into space himself, that seems to me like a direct influence on 2001. This was almost completely silent, and unlike a lot of scary or violent things in films like this, took its time to unfold. This astronaut slowly slips away into space and there's a brief closeup of the desperation in his eyes when he realizes he can't…

Review by Jet Jaguar ★★

While there is an excessive amount of schlock science fiction mediocrity in this film, a few of the concepts and period specific special effects still possess the gestalt of space race cosmonaut futurism.

This was good fare for a Saturday morning. It felt an awful lot like an episode of Star Trek as well as having a lot of Flash Gordon vibes. In fact, there was so much that was familiar I wonder where this sits in the sci-fi timeline. There was nothing outstanding about it but everything worked well enough and it turned into an enjoyable watch.

AirSabe

Review by AirSabe ★½

If someone told me the premise of the film, I probably would have thought this was a pretty cool movie: Astronauts exploring space come across a cosmic anomaly and crash land on a strange planet where they run across a civilization in the midst of an inter-galactic war. However, the execution of this story leaves much to be desired. The movie moves at a slow pace with scenes going on far too long. The acting and dialogue is wooden and uninspired. The story is uneven and changes too often to build any momentum. The spaceships and planet effects are fun in a cheesy way. But unfortunately, although the story had potential, the film was just too boring to be enjoyed.

The Phantom Planet (1961)

Rating: ★.

Director – William Marshall, Screenplay – Fred Gebhardt, Fred De Gorter & William Telaak, Story/Producer – Fred Gebhardt, Photography (b&w) – Elwood J. Nicholson, Music Supervisor – Gordon Zahler, Director of Photographic Effects – Louis DeWitt, Production Design – Robert Kinoshita. Production Company – Four Crown.

The Pegasus IV is launched from a US base on the Moon with an assignment to determine what has happened to two previous space missions that have gone missing. The Pegasus is damaged by a meteorite shower and crashes on the surface of an asteroid. The only survivor is the mission’s commander Frank Chapman. Frank is approached by the miniature-size inhabitants of the asteroid, known as Rheton. The planetoid’s dense magnetic forces shrink Frank down to the inhabitants’ size. He is placed on trial and sentenced to remain on Rheton for the rest of his life in order to protect the secret of the inhabitants’ existence. There Frank is caught between the attentions of two women and must fight a duel against a jealous male. At the same time, Rheton also comes under attack by the invading Solarites.

The Phantom Planet is a cheap science-fiction film from the early days of the Space Age. It was not seen much when it came out and its profile has rarely improved any since then, with its only distinction being its regurgitation on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988-99, 2017-8).

The film is dreary and slow moving. Its’ one moment of joyously surreal beauty is a scene early on where astronaut Dean Fredericks crashes on the asteroid, collapses in his spacesuit and is then approached by the miniature inhabitants of the world who come up and tap on the glass plate of his helmet, wondering where the inhabitant is. It could almost be a Space Age version of the famous beach scene from Gulliver’s Travels (1726). Alas, such a wonderfully bizarre image in promptly undone by the banality of the very next scene, which has Dean Fredericks placed on trial where the film then engages in an utterly dull debate about jury selection.

The rest of The Phantom Planet certainly never rises to anything as imaginative as this – the whole film takes places in a series of rock caves with most of the drama centred around the hero being caught in a quartet of romantic jealousies. There is an alien invasion and space war later on but the cheapness of the special effects prevent any adequate depiction of this.

There is also a monster (played by Richard Kiel, alias the steel-toothed Jaws of James Bond movie fame) that breaks loose but fails to get up to much. This is alas symptomatic of the rest of The Phantom Planet , which remains a frustratingly slight film that fails to go anywhere.

Film review: the phantom planet (1961).

Nigel Honeybone 12/09/2012 Film Reviews

the phantom planet 1961 cast

REVIEW: This week’s burnt offering is a film named The Phantom Planet (1961) and set in the far distant future of 1980. I know you’ve been wanting to see a movie that answers those existential questions like why are we here? What is my purpose in life? Do I have a destiny? Why do villains thrive while nice people get done-over? Who shall have the mackerel When The Boat Comes In? As soon as I find such a film, I promise I’ll review it for your edification. While we’re waiting, let’s discuss the unremarkable Phantom Planet, which answers none of these questions, but raises one more: Couldn’t these people find a better way to spend their time?

I might be mistaken, “Nigel”, but I believe you have the wrong photo above the paragraph where you discuss the actress Coleen Gray. The Elizabeth Taylor look-alike is actually the actress Dolores Faith, who plays the (temporarily) mute “Zetha”. FYI.

Hello, good evening and welcome, Mark! I’m sorry for my terribly late reply. You’re absolutely right, of course, but the photos I use rarely illustrate the paragraph or actor in question. After writing my review, I’ll locate six or eight of the best-quality photos I can find, and pepper them through the article. I’ve been away for the last six months, working on a new season of The Schlocky Horror Picture Show, but now I’m back with a vengeance! Thanks again for reading, and I look forward to talking to you soon! Toodles!

You have the credit for Marvin Miller wrong. His biggest gig, and the one where he was an onscreen lead/star (from 1955-1960) and WILDLY popular was in “The Millionaire” A ahlf hour weekly show where he would carry a “tax-free cashiers check” for a Million dollars and award it to some unsuspecting schmuck.

His other credits are mere walk-ons and mike milking.

Hello, good evening and welcome, Lou! I’m sorry for my late reply. I have to disagree with you there – The Millionaire was hugely popular on USA television but rarely seen outside America, while Forbidden Planet and The Invisible Boy had an international audience. Ask anyone if they remember Robby The Robot or The Millionaire, I dare say Robby would win.

Although Miller was seen at the beginning of each episode, I believe it was the same sequence repeated in each episode of that particular season, and they simply re-filmed his intro with each new season. During the story itself, The Millionaire’s face was never seen, and was often played by an un-named crew member in a suit.

I’ve been away for the last six months, working on a new season of The Schlocky Horror Picture Show, but now I’m back with a vengeance! Thanks again for reading, and I look forward to talking to you soon! Toodles!
