Duties and Responsibilities :

Inventory Management :

• Forecast parts needs and order parts to maintain optimal inventory levels.
• Monitor current parts inventory and adjust as necessary.
• Price parts to maintain profitability.

Parts Handling :

• Manage all aspects of receiving parts, including placing them into inventory and proper labeling.
• Handle returns by inspecting items, returning payment, issuing credit, repacking, and re-shelving items, and returning damaged items to suppliers.

Customer Service :

• Assist customers in finding and purchasing the correct parts.
• Advise customers on substitution or modification of parts when replacements are not available.
• Collaborate with service managers to ensure all parts are available for scheduled service dates

Personnel Management :

Sales Processing :

• Complete sales transactions by entering purchased items into the data management system, obtaining payment, adding purchases to credit accounts, and issuing sales receipts.
• Post parts on work orders to the correct job line before service technicians leave the parts office.
• Reconcile cash drawer till with sales slips and credit card charges.

Maintenance and Safety :

• Ensure the parts area maintains a clean and professional atmosphere.

New boats don’t address WA ferry system’s urgent problem

Washington State Ferries is spending 4 billion in taxpayer dollars electrifying its fleet to combat global warming. While commendable, this undertaking overlooks our ferry system’s real crisis: a critical shortage of highly skilled and experienced marine engineers and oilers.

The shortage of essential crew members, caused by WSF’s low wages and benefits, is the key reason why the ferry system continues to fail to provide traditional levels of timely service and reliability. The agency has refused to compensate its workforce with pay that’s competitive enough to lure engineers away from gigs in the private sector. Chief engineers in the private sector are paid $300,000 and work half the year, whereas WSF’s chief engineers are earning less than $150,000 for year-round work. Surprisingly, WSF marine oilers are paid less than ticket-takers at the ferry terminal. In fact, WSF has gone from being one of the highest-paid ferry jobs in the country to one of the lowest. 

The Washington State Ferry system is in crisis and is incapable of performing reliably. Ferry management has overpromised and underdelivered on solving the ferry service problems, hurting the Washingtonians who depend on the boats. WSF data shows last year alone, about 3,500 sailings were canceled. Based on data compiled by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association, approximately 65% of those cancellations were the result of insufficient numbers of qualified marine engineers and oilers to meet crewing minimums required by Coast Guard regulations. A minimum of 200 marine engineers are needed every day to run all scheduled routes. If one person isn’t available due to illness or other reasons, it can paralyze the system. Every canceled trip threatens the livelihoods, health and well-being of our ferry-dependent communities. The ripple effects of those cancellations are unacceptable.

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of the ferry system to the prosperity and allure of the Puget Sound region. More than 50,000 Washingtonians depend on our ferries to get to work. Many thousands more board them every day to go to medical appointments, shopping, school, and visits with friends and family. Thousands of businesses depend on them to get supplies and deliver products. Ferries support an estimated 150,000 jobs and generate nearly $3 billion in state and local tax revenue each year. Ferry routes are an essential and irreplaceable part of our state’s transportation system, just like roads, except, unlike roads, they recover 70% of their operating costs at the fare box. The ferries are one of the state’s leading tourist attractions, pumping millions of out-of-state dollars into the local economy.

But instead of providing a pay scale that would solve our workforce shortage, WSF is trying to convince taxpayers that recruiting from high schools and purchasing $4 billion in new electric vessels will solve the problem. Electrifying the ferry fleet is a giant undertaking that will take over a decade to operationalize. It takes many years of education and training, and further years of experience, known as “sea-time,” to become a licensed marine engineer — over a year of training to become an oiler, over five years to get enough experience to be promoted to assistant engineer and about 10 years to become a chief engineer. Ferry users can’t tolerate thousands of cancellations per year while we wait for 17-year-olds to become qualified to assume command of the engine rooms of 6,000-ton ferries more than a decade from now. What is the point of having electric ferries if they cannot operate due to a lack of crew? 

It’s critical that the state balances its investments in greening the fleet for the future with the wage scale needed to recruit and keep essential crew members to restore reliable ferry service today. By refusing to address the root cause of the problem — noncompetitive wages — WSF is creeping closer to the possible death of the entire system.

Verlander working his way back to astros' lineup, to throw bullpen session amid seattle series.

SEATTLE, Washington -- Houston righty Justin Verlander is expected to throw another bullpen session on Saturday as the three-time Cy Young winner tries to work his way back from neck discomfort that landed him on the injured list a month ago.

Houston manager Joe Espada said Verlander and Luis Garcia are expected to throw before the second game of the Astros' series in Seattle. The 41-year-old Verlander has been out since June 9 and is expected to throw around 25 pitches. Espada said the hope is that Verlander will be able to increase the intensity during this session.

"Last time he threw his side, he threw all of his pitches, so hopefully, there will be more intensity behind these pitches," Espada said.

Verlander is 3-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 starts this season for Houston. He missed the first 20 games of the season due to inflammation in his right shoulder before making his debut on April 19.

Garcia is still in the process of recovering from Tommy John surgery. Garcia didn't throw a scheduled bullpen session last week, but at the time, Espada didn't view it as a setback.

Garcia underwent surgery in May 2023.

Espada also said outfielder Kyle Tucker continues to make progress in his recovery from a right shin contusion but that he needs start doing more running. Tucker has been throwing, hitting, and did some limited field drills during the Astros workout in Seattle on Thursday, but needs to improve to the point of being able to do more movement.

Tucker has been on the injured list since June 4.

"We need to get him running to put some weight on that leg. He's hitting, he's throwing, but we're not quite there yet to let him loose on the bases," Espada said.

Houston catcher Victor Caratini was transferred to Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday as part of his rehab assignment from a hip flexor strain. Caratini could join the Astros sometime next week.

Espada also said Lance McCullers Jr. had a second opinion on his right elbow that showed no structural damage, but has not been cleared to start throwing.
