How to Select the Best Bow Roller for Your Anchor and Boat

How to Select the Best Bow Roller for Your Anchor and Boat

Storing a large bulky piece of metal like an anchor can sometimes be tricky. In this article, we'll discuss the most popular options for storing your anchor, including using a bow pulpit, anchor roller, or anchor well.

Anchor Well or Other Storage Compartment

Many boats, especially smaller ones, come with an anchor well at the front of the boat to store an anchor and rode. For those that don't have a built in well, under the captain's seat is also a popular location for a quasi anchor well! If your boat has an anchor well, it's the most logical place to store your anchor. The main downside to using an anchor well is that the anchor needs to be retrieved from the well for use and they're normally built to accommodate only folding flat anchors like a Danforth, opposed to other bulkier anchors like a Bruce or Delta. If using a windlass, you'll want the anchor to be permanently fixed to the bow of the boat, making the use of an anchor well impractical.

Anchor Well

Anchor Well Pros and Cons

  • Keeps the anchor out of the way
  • Convenient as often requires no installation of additional hardware
  • Difficult to store many non-flat anchors like Bruce, Rocna, Delta, etc.
  • Anchor cannot be easily deployed
  • Can't use a windlass

If you're so lucky, your boat will come with a bow pulpit, which is a protrusion at the bow of your boat specifically for holding an anchor. Pre-installed bow pulpits are normally constructed from fiberglass but do-it-yourselfers will often construct them from teak or marine lumber.

Because a bow pulpit mounts the anchor further away from the bow of the boat, it allows for a wider range of sizes and styles of anchors to be used (the design of plow and claw style anchors often requires for them to be mounted a fair distance from the bow of the boat). A bow pulpit keeps your boat cleaner as it doesn't involve muddy chain and rope being dragged up the deck of your boat and they offer convenient access to your anchor (especially important for use with windlasses). For better or worse, a bow pulpit adds to the overall length of your boat, which is nice if you're selling your boat but not so nice if you have to pay for an extra 2' of moorage because of the pulpit.

Bow Pulpit

Bow Pulpit Pros and Cons

  • Keeps the anchor far away from the bow, allowing for a larger range of of anchor sizes/styles to be mounted
  • Provides quick and easy access to your anchor
  • Ideal for use with windlasses
  • Expensive to install
  • Adds to the overall length of your boat (meaning more moorage fees)

Standalone Bow Roller

Standalone Bow Roller

The happy medium between an expensive after-market bow pulpit or simply storing your anchor in an anchor well, is to use a standalone anchor roller.

Many boats come with an anchor roller pre-installed, however, if your boat did not, they can generally be simply installed on to the bow of your boat. A bow roller functions in much the same way as a bow pulpit, allowing you to keep your anchor permanently mounted on the front of your boat. The bow roller can be used for storing the anchor but it also makes retrieving the anchor by hand much easier.

There's often a limit to how far a standalone bow roller can protrude off the bow of your boat meaning there can be limits of the size and style of anchor you can use.

Standalone Bow Roller Pros and Cons

  • Allows for easier retrieval of the anchor
  • There are often limits to the size and style of anchor you can use
  • Doesn't keep the anchor as far away as a pulpit, meaning mud/dirt may be strewn across your deck upon retrieval and the anchor may potentially bang the hull when stored

Tips on Selecting a Bow Roller

Picking the right bow roller for your boat is predicated largely by what size and style of anchor you are using. Most bow roller manufacturers will give you a selection guide for the most popular styles and sizes of anchors. However, the most important things to keep in mind when selecting a bow roller are:

  • Does the bow roller keep the anchor an adequate amount of distance away from the boat?
  • Can the shank fit through the loop of the roller?

Selecting a Bow Roller Checklist

In our experience, Danforth/Fortress, CQR, and Delta anchors generally fit interchangeably on an anchor roller such as the   Universal Bow Roller. Bruce/Claw anchors can fit on similar bow rollers as CQR and Delta anchors, but fit well on a special type of specific   Bruce Anchor Roller.

When purchasing a bow roller, keep in mind how much mounting room you will need (again, most manufacturers should include a diagram of this). Installing a bow roller is a fairly basic installation undertaken by even the most novice do-it-yourselfer. Installation normally takes just 2-4 bolts mounted, through the fore-deck (gasp- holes!). A mounting plate should be used.

Remember when using a windlass and a bow roller, the windlass should not be holding the weight of your stored anchor for long periods of time as this creates unnecessary stress and the anchor can potentially be released unexpectedly. Instead, either tie the chain/rope to a cleat or use a chain stopper.

Chain Stopper being used to relieve tension on the windlass and avoid accidental anchor deployment

building my own anchor pulpit

been keeping an eye out for an anchor pulpit cheap but thought maybe i would build my own? i figured 2 pieces of 3/4" ply glued together and shaped. if i am going to gel coat it do i need to fiberglass it too or just waterproof then gel coat over that? no windlass. just figured i would build one and install a stainless roller and add a hole of some sort to let the chain/rope pass through into the locker. i would think it would make anchor retrieval and deployment much easier? thoughts were that it would be a cheap enough project to learn on. if i screwed it up then no big deal and if it worked it would be a cheap add on that should be helpful.

What kind of boat, and does it have a bow rail?

jbcurt00

What do you intend to waterproof it w?

The pulpit will need reinforcement as AD said or it's gonna pull out. You're gonna dump dripping wet anchor rode and chain in the locker - No need to worry about a little rain through the hawse.

WOGs formula, straight spar or any similar isnt going to provide a stable base for gelcoat. Its a polyester based product. It needs to be put on over polyester resin and glass. Gelcoat has adhesion problems over epoxy, so thats out too.

yeah, its a 25'er. and i am definitely reinforcing the underside. probably overkill too but thats how i usually do things...lol. i was thinking a 3/8" aluminum plate under the whole front section and then a smaller piece of the same 3/8" aluminum under the rear of the hatch opening to hold the aft end down too? if i have a big enough piece of aluminum (i don't think i do) i will cut it to match pulpit in one big piece with the hatch opening cut out too. is there any issue with mating aluminum up to the gel coat? no intentions of walking on it but want it strong and reliable. never know when somebody may need to step on it in an emergency

there is nothing cheap about boats. buying a bow pulpit will be about same price as making a quality pulpit quick google search here is a teak one https://cnj.craigslist.org/boa/6009321925.html here are fiberglass ones http://www.yachtsofstuff.com/userpo...e65ate76LOSgZ-g6V49tR8HiaoyDBlvQQAaApAf8P8HAQ here is a general listing of a variety of them https://www.finecomb.com/web?qsrc=9...=marine bow pulpits&dqi=&am=broad&an=google_s if your going to build your own, fiberglass it, then gel coat it, or build it out of wood that can be exposed like teak regarding aluminum plate, make sure to seal the edges with UV stable 4200 so water doesnt get trapped under it and start corroding. raw aluminum corrodes fast

still toying around with this idea. how about using this plywood? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Columbia...anel-Free-Custom-Cut-Available-1888/203553013 it isn't marine grade but will that matter if i seal it up good? i need about 18"x36". 2 of these glued together to make 1.5" think and sealed well should do the trick? 1.5" may even be overkill?

You could use that but it has a very thin layer of Mahogany, so clear coating it will look nice for a while, but IMO won't last. I would suggest the easy way is get exterior plywood, then coat with epoxy paint

ugh...was hoping that might work. trying to make it look good too so painting exterior plywood is out. i'd rather leave it as is. guess i will probably just hold off until we get a bigger boat. i think a used teak pulpit will be too short to cover my locker door unless it was designed for a windlass then it will probably have too many hole and i don't want to install a windlass on this boat. too much work for all the longer i;m hoping to keep it

Woodonglass said: You can use that Plywood IF you seal it with epoxy. You'll see the natural wood and it'll be waterproof. At first you said you wanted to gelcoat it, Now you want it to be A Naturale' I'm confused. What's the finished product gunna look like??? Click to expand...

actually after looking at Teds install i may not need the wood or fiberglass. my objective is to let the anchor hang from the roller as his did. i can still leave my rope/chain in the locker. i was only using the wood to mount the roller and extend it out a little. i didn't realize rollers could mount like that without the pulpit. i may have to look into that. i just think launching and retrieving the anchor would be easier for me if it were already hanging out front due to my physical limitations. my anchor locker hatch isn't in great shape so i could cut a hole for the rope to go through then look for an alternative later. is this feasible? i don't have the boat here so i can't get measurements but i know the the rear of my hatch to the front of the bow is about 30" (i was thinking about 36" for the pulpit). my hatch is about 17" wide and close to square so about 15" long, which means i have roughly 15" of flat deck area in front of my hatch to mount the roller. the wood/fiberglass was only to serve as a base to mount the roller on

I built one for my SeaRay 230 about 3 yrs ago, worked out fabulous!,... here is the thread. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...-and-hull-repair/662291-building-a-bow-pulpit

yeah, i think i can get away with just the stainless roller. i was thinking i NEEDED the wood under it but after seeing Teds pictures i guess not. that would be perfect and much easier (probably look better too)

that looks good shaw. i really doubt mine would turn out that nice though. using just the stainless roller will be much neater for me...lol. if i do decide to keep it a few more years and go the windlass route then i will probably copy-cat yours

How to Retrofit an Anchor Platform

  • By Bruce Bingham
  • Updated: January 16, 2014

Anchor Refit

Over the course of my long sailing career, I’ve spent nearly three decades living aboard boats ranging from 20 to 54 feet. While I can’t take credit for the invention of the anchor platform or the anchor roller, I probably owe to their innovative designers the survival of several boats. I have experience with many platforms that were extremely strong, safe, well designed and versatile. But I have also been a victim of some that were weak and impractical.

What makes a good platform? It must be built like a tank to withstand horrific conditions and massive loads, and designed to accommodate two or three anchors of different styles at the same time. Rollers are absolutely essential and must be far enough apart to avoid fouling each other as well as the forestay. The floor plan should be wide enough to provide good footing, even under rough conditions. A bow pulpit should encircle the entire platform if possible (and might even feature a bracket to accommodate yet another anchor such as a Danforth). Finally, the platform should complement the appearance of the boat, especially its sheer line.

| |_**Metal Frame ** For extra strength and durability, consider adding a metal framework. Fabricated with 316 stainless steel, it should feature horizontal stainless-plate gussets for supporting the pulpit base and anchor rollers._| |

| |_**Strip Plank ** This method of construction makes use of longitudinal hardwood lengths that are twice as high as they are wide, glued together with paste epoxy and fastened together with flat-head screws, the length of which should be 2.5 times the plank width._| |

| | Multilayers When building with multiple layers of plywood, begin by transferring your platform pattern lines to several pieces of high-quality plywood. You can glue up all the layers at the same time provided the “kick” time of the glue is not less than 40 minutes. Use C-clamps around the platform edges and heavy objects like lead weights to compress the laminate during the curing process. |

So, how would one go about retrofitting an anchor platform to a boat that doesn’t have one? First, a lot of careful thought has to go into the hardware and layout. Consider the size and type of anchors to be used; chain size; where and how cleats and posts will be assembled on the foredeck; forestay clearance; stanchion bases; and the angle of the hull stem. All these elements must be integrated into an efficient design.

If your platform will incorporate a bowsprit, make sure that the anchor rode and chain have a fair lead from the platform’s forward end so that they won’t strike the bobstay. I once lost all of the starboard ground tackle aboard my schooner, At Last , when the rode chafed against the bobstay.

Regardless of a platform’s style or construction method, accurate patterns are the key to constructing a tight fit. I use a pattern technique taught to me by my dad, a lifelong boatbuilder, that employs the same mat board used for framing pictures; it’s stiff, dimensionally stable, and easy to cut with scissors and an X-Acto knife. Start with a series of three or four large pieces of mat board glued together to define the basic shape of the hull where the platform will be placed. I like Titebond III glue, which sets in about five minutes and cures in a couple of hours. The base pieces of the pattern can usually be taped to the hull while it’s being assembled. Don’t be concerned if it’s a loose fit, as we’ll address accuracy next.

Cut several dozen small pieces of mat board in about ½-by-2-inch sections, and then, to fine-tune for accuracy, cut one end of these pieces to a point. One by one, place a drop of glue on each “pointer” and position it onto the baseboard so it just makes contact with the hull. Repeat this process until the pointers completely surround the hull where the platform will be installed. Additional pointers should be used to define extraneous shapes such as a headstay tang.

It’s a wise idea to create your pattern so it includes the entire shape of the intended platform, so you can outline all of the hardware as well as the toerails and their fastenings. This step will become an invaluable guide for locating the plank edge joints and their screws, so longitudinal and transverse conflicts can be avoided.

For amateur construction, wood platforms without a metal frame are ideal. Even then, attaching the platform to the hull requires skill and presents an engineering challenge. The platform must fit the shape, as well as the angles, of the hull very accurately. Adding angular pieces of mat board above or below the pattern baseboards can help.

| | 1. One by one, place a drop of glue on each pointer and position it on the baseboard so it just makes contact with the hull. Repeat the process until the pointers completely surround the hull where the platform will be installed. | |

| | 2. On the pattern, lay out and outline where all hardware and fittings will ultimately be added to the finished platform. | |

| | 3. If opting for strip-plank construction, mark the platform plank cuts directly on the pattern. Begin with a center plank as wide as possible, building outward on each side with narrower strips. | |

| | 4. After the planks are glued and fastened, and have had time to properly cure, use a band saw to cut the final perimeter and hull-shape bevel. You may need to remove the outermost screws during the cutting and reinsert them when finished. | |

| | 5. Before the platform is permanently installed with all fittings and hardware, pre-fasten it directly to the hull with stainless bolts, washers and lock nuts. | |

| | 6. For added strength and rigidity, install a bobstay or diagonal compression strut to the platform, which will assist in bearing the ground-tackle loads when anchored in an open roadstead or bouncy seaway. |

The platform construction that I prefer can be strip-planked (epoxy glued and screwed horizontally with long screws), or built of multiple layers of marine ply with the grain of each layer rotated about 30 degrees to produce the greatest possible working strength. I don’t recommend tongue-and-groove, half-lap or edge-dowel construction because these techniques don’t hold up over the long haul. I also strongly warn against building the platform by edge-gluing thick planks and supplementing them by drilling through and inserting transverse threaded tie rods with countersunk washers and nuts. This method causes crosswise weakness and probable rot that invites total failure of the platform.

Strip-planked construction is made up of longitudinal hardwood lengths that are twice as high as they are wide, glued together with paste epoxy and fastened one to another by flat-head screws, the length of which are 2.5 times the plank width. Begin with a center plank as wide as possible, building outward on each side with the narrower strips. Continue until the structure is about an inch wider than the final shape. After the full curing cycle, cut the final perimeter and hull-shape bevel (best done with a band saw). You might have to remove the outermost screws during the cutting and reinsert them when finished.

For multilayered plywood construction, begin by transferring your platform pattern lines at 30-degree angles to several pieces of high-quality plywood (the exact number will depend on the desired thickness of the platform). Cut each piece at least one inch outside of the final cut line. You can glue up all the layers at the same time provided the “kick” time of the epoxy glue is not less than about 40 minutes. Use C-clamps around the platform edges and heavy objects such as bricks or lead dive weights to compress the laminate during the curing period. Wait a day before cutting the platform perimeter and the bevel of the hull shape (best cut with a band saw).

A wooden platform on a metal frame will require two construction disciplines: woodworking and metalworking. The metal parts should be designed by a mechanical or structural engineer and fabricated from tubular 316 stainless steel (round or square) by a professional welder. The “deck” of the platform can be built by the strip-planked or multilayered plywood method, or by fastening individual planks of any width to the frame’s transverse members. The stainless framework should feature horizontal stainless-plate gussets for supporting the pulpit base as well as the anchor rollers and possible chock installations.

Fasten the platform to the hull with stainless bolts, washers and lock nuts. The washers should be custom made by 1) cutting required bevels out of stainless pipe or thick-wall stainless tubing or 2) making beveled washers out of a solid material such as Seaboard or Starboard. Never pass a horizontal bolt through an angled hull side or bulwark without a beveled washer. A flat washer, when used, might require an elongated hole.

A diagonal compression strut should be a standard feature of every long-cantilevered platform that does not accept a head stay. Consider a boat anchored in a seaway with large breaking waves. As a wave begins to pass under the boat, the bow rises to the height of the wave, then the entire hull surges aft almost at the speed of the wave. This produces significant downward or forward loading on the platform, which will increase if the chain’s catenary straightens out.

My Cape Dory 28, Nikki , was once anchored in such conditions as I was getting under way. On one huge surge, a ⅜-inch stainless shackle virtually exploded, and a custom-made stainless plow anchor and all of the chain were lost. At that instant, I felt the boat lurch as if it had backed into a seawall. The platform strut, along with the forestay, absorbed the entire enormous shock load, sparing the platform and the foredeck any damage. The compression strut should be made of 316 stainless-steel heavy-wall tubing with metal plate fittings at each end to connect the platform’s underside to the hull stem.

A well-constructed anchor platform is functional and good-looking. It can increase your safety margins when anchoring, add a touch of class to your boat’s profile, and increase both the length and value of your boat. With a generous footprint, it can even be a convenient space when working forward to change headsails or douse a kite. If building a platform is beyond your skills or time allotment, find a good shipwright to make you one. You won’t regret the investment.

best way to store anchor line a pulpit

Just got a new boat and getting it setup, I like to hang my anchor on the pulpit and I guess I'm going to store the line in a canvas bag. Just wondering how other sailors are doing it. I've got a 26s mac and I'm putting netting on the life lines so it will be secure. My last boat I could feed the line into a line hold in the bow, slick. What's a good way to go as far as anchor bag design ? who makes good ones ?

Mike8271

Check the photo album of MADELON for how he stores his anchor rode on deck. He posted some pictures of his project that utilized PVC.

Ooooh, look at that Ericson sail cover. Ok, sorry. I want to know about the rode as well. I have a rear locker, but it doesn't seem to "store" line well..

Merlin Clark

If you just drop the line into a bucket, cooler, bag, etc., it will pay out. just like through a deck pipe into an anchor locker. If you coil it will foul. I'd build a bulkhead up in the bow with a drain and vented door and install a deck pipe (pic below). If the bottom is above the waterline, the locker could drain right over the side rather into the bilge. Or could build the locker under the vee berth and use a pipe from the deck pipe to lead the line down. Either would require some room above the full pile of rode to keep it from bunching up. I'd fiberglass the inside to protect from rot. The locker wouldn't have to be as big as the one in the pic, I just added it to illustrate what I was saying.

Here is an idea. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polished-Br..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item337fe72304&vxp=mtr

yeah that's what I used on my 25' it was perfect, there was a little bulkhead area that held the line and allowed it to drain down into the gunnel. but this 26' doesn't have the bulkhead area it's all finished.

my 25 had a little bulkhead like that it was perfect, 26 is finished. No unfortunately the line is staying on deck

A five gallon bucket with a hole in the bottom for the line to run through to a strong point. You do secure the bitter end? then just push the line into the bucket through a hole in the lid.

Cool. My Islander has a factory built locker that I built a bottom into and a drain also a big glassed in hard point for the bitter end of the rode.

I have a 19' O'Day Mariner with a bow pulpit from a Catalina 22 that I tweaked to fit. I wanted the anchor mounted on the rail but what to do with the line. I thought about glassing in a anchor locker but I just had new cushions made and would have had to modify them. Plus a locker should have access door on the inside, and it should really have a drain. I wanted a simpler solution. My solution may not work for a larger boat with larger line, or for all chain, but it holds 100' of 1/2 line and 10" of chain. It's coils itself when storing. I cut the wire handle of the bucket into 2 pieces and formed a loop in each end to go through the eye hook. No movement at all side to side, and very little movement fore and aft. As the foredeck had a slight curve and was a little thin, I made the large s.s. backing plate for the hawse pipe for extra support It's raised enough to be out of the way, and removes easily for cleaning. Seems to work well. rob j

Ron, that is fantastic! Oh and don't think your polished chain and anchor have gone unnoticed... You are definitely a guy who pays attention to detail.

hurricanehole

Very nice Mariner setup! I've done something different for safety and those I just ran out of gas or where am I moments. The rode is cleated off up front and led back outside of the stays to the starbd locker so that without going up front I can toss the anchor out. Leaving, if the current isn't bad I can motor forward and hook or walk forward grab the anchor line and pull in from the cockpit. Then the sails are sheeted in and away she goes. This is for my single handing safety.

dscribner

This this would be the least favored response. My anchor line never left the plastic reel that I bought it on. I have two anchors set up this way, stored below. When it's time, I dig one or two out. As I bring in the line I wrap it ahround the reel. Flunky? Yes, but itworks for me.

Hurricane, I just finished a stern rail for my Mariner and was going to use the same method as you, especially when cruising and singlehanded. I think I'll just mount the same bracket for the anchor on one side so I can hang it either on the bow or stern. Or I was thinking a smaller "lunch hook" on the stern. I think you're right, the method of deploying the anchor from the stern is the safest esp. alone, and on a small boat. robj

Looking for advice on how to clean up the bow pulpit anchor roller area. I am pretty weak in the fiberglass area so need some help. The entire pulpit is ok, no movement, bending etc... We never anchor in deep water and only use the anchor when at the redneck Riviera at the inlet beach. Maybe 6 ft of water at most. Thought of filling the channel with wood and epoxy then mounting the roller on the flat surface, but that will bring the anchor up to high and it will hit the bottom of the pulpit. thanks

Pivoting Self-launching Anchor Bow Roller, Length 16-1/4", Stainless Steel - FO4184

www.five-oceans.com

1/2" allows for plenty of anchor clearance, guess its fill and cover. I have some starboard that will work fine. Now how do I fill.

Actually, you don't even need to fill it. That's the beauty of the HDPE - it covers it up! Make the width of the HDPE just shy of the stanchion plates and that will give plenty of room to thru-bolt the HDPE. You can thru-bolt the roller to the HDPE before installing the HDPE to the pulpit. Use large fender washers - or even some aluminum plate (can get it at HD/Lowes) as a backer. The span of the HDPE is so short that it will be plenty strong. I would add two more holes in the roller close to the front edge - just like the aft two holes. What I would probably do with the chips is quickly grind/sand to expose some "fresher" material (don't spend too much time doing this - just a quick and nasty job) and then smear some good caulk - Lifeseal, 4200, 5200, etc - on and around the chips. Just to try and keep any water out to stop them from getting worse.

SkunkBoat

I just did that. Filled the channel and mounted a tilt roller. It was part of the post below https://www.greatgrady.com/threads/powerwinch-300-capstan.34573/post-253994

I read that post Skunk. Any chance you could give me some details on how to. I am not well versed in this area. thanks

To a degree, the repairs you do will depend on whether your boat is subject to freezing temps including the off season. If moisture gets into the coring and it has, when the temps get cold enough, the core moisture will expand and will crack the fiberglass shell. I see a lot of stress cracking in the photo but I can't be sure if that is freeze thaw related or mechanical stress caused. If you are not subject to freezing, the more cosmetic solution should be fine as long as the structure is sound and you say it is. In the other case where freeze cycles are likely, I would recommend a reconstruction approach to the exposed areas including the whole section under the old roller bracket.

sailboat pulpit anchor

hard freeze not much of an occurrence down here on the treasure coast think i will do a hybrid and fill the front only and cover it all with starboard and seal it up with 4200

Leave a weep hole. Regardless of temperature, it's never a good idea to create an area that can trap water - even as small as that.

The pulpits were cored with foam as best I can tell. You can use 1/2" exterior plywood (Not treated). Its not rocket science. Grinder with 60 grit all of the chips, over drill old holes, sand whatever is currently smooth.... until its clean . Put packing tape over the holes on the underside. put packing tape wherever you don't want epoxy to stick. Nice straight lines. The channel is angled so you need to stack a few pieces of different lengths. dry fit layers. Understand that the Epoxy filler will also take up space. Coat the pieces with epoxy. fill the holes with filler (drip it in so it doesn't bubble) Make a sandwich with Epoxy, filler, glass cloth, plywood.. The top gets "fairing" filler. sand it smooth. paint it with oil based Rustoleum or similar. Pait the whole thing or paint just the patch. The roller will cover most of it. Redrill your holes for a new roller. I give a big thumbs up to the tilt roller. Its actually a good project for learning to use epoxy and glass and fillers. Unless you are perfectionist...then pay somebody (more than you would like) for their time, tools, and expertise. Don't mix too much at once or it will get really hot and smoke and melt your pot. I use wonton soup containers... $1.50 pint or $3 Qt you get soup and a container...can't beat that. Nix the starboard.

ROBERTH

I filled in mine with a piece of oak wood made as a wedge to fit as a filler, then after grinding bad areas and surfaces to allow a bond, I used structural fiberglass filler and then sanded smooth. Added a thin layer of marine bondo to fill in any perfections and then painted with Interlux. I installed a Lewmar Bow Roller number 66840008. I had a Delta type anchor at first and my mistake was I didn't slide the roller assy far enough forward. I was just about a 1/4" too short so anchor would hit bottom edge of pulpit, but not really a big issue. Later, I purchased a Mantus M1 and it has been the best anchor and does not hit. Now, it self launches every time no issue and will turn itself over when retrieving. This was the best anchor solution I wish I had done years earlier. No more anchoring issues.

March 26, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapses after ship collision

By Helen Regan , Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Rachel Ramirez , Elise Hammond , Aditi Sangal , Tori B. Powell , Piper Hudspeth Blackburn and Kathleen Magramo , CNN

Ship dropped its anchor as part of emergency procedure before impact, transportation agency says

From CNN’s AnneClaire Stapleton, Louis Mian and Sahar Akbarzai

The DALI container ship that struck Baltimore's Key Bridge dropped its anchor prior to impact as part of its emergency procedures after losing propulsion, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement Tuesday.

DALI is a Singapore-registered vessel that was chartered by  Danish shipping company Maersk .

"The ship management company, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, reported to MPA that just prior to the incident, the vessel, Dali had experienced momentary loss of propulsion," the statement from MPA said. "As a result, it was unable to maintain the desired heading and collided with the Francis Scott Key bridge."

The vessel is currently holding onto its position at the site of the collision and is in a stable condition. All 22 crew members are safe and accounted for. CNN has reached out to the Synergy Group, the ship’s managing company, for comment.

Danish shipping giant said it is "omitting" Baltimore on all its services following bridge collapse

From CNN’s Robert North and Sugam Pokharel in London

The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge lies in the water after it collapsed in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Danish shipping giant Maersk said in a statement on Tuesday that it is dropping Baltimore on all its services for the foreseeable future following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“Due to the damage to the bridge and resulting debris, it will not be possible to reach the Helen Delich Bentley port of Baltimore for the time being," the company said in a statement. "In line with this, we are omitting Baltimore on all our services for the foreseeable future, until it is deemed safe for passage through this area."

The container ship that collided with a pillar of the bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, the DALI, was chartered by Maersk and carrying Maersk customers' cargo, the company said earlier. It also said the DALI is owned by Grace Ocean and operated by Synergy Group.

No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard the vessel, the company noted.

Ships headed to Baltimore will divert to nearby ports, from which it will be possible for cargo to use other means of transportation to reach their final destinations, the company added.

For cargo set to be released in Baltimore, the company said to expect delays, as they look for other port alternatives.

A minute-by-minute timeline of the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

Authorities are continuing to search for six people who are unaccounted for after a cargo ship veered off course into a pillar of Baltimore's Key Bridge, causing the bridge to collapse.

Here's a timeline of how the incident unfolded. All times are ET:

  • 12:28 a.m.: The DALI container ship unmoors from the port and begins to move, per MarineTraffic data analyzed by CNN.
  • 1:24 a.m. : The DALI lights flicker as it travels down Patapsco River, according to video from the scene.
  • 1:26 a.m.: The ship begins to change course toward the Key Bridge's pillar, CNN analysis shows.
  • 1:26 to 1:27 a.m. : The ships lights continue to flicker on and off, video of the ship shows.
  • 1:27 a.m.: The ship hits the Key Bridge, quickly causing it to collapse, the US Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard immediately deploys personnel to the scene.
  • 1:40 a.m.: The 911 center dispatches call to Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) for reports of water rescue in the Patapsco River, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace. As units were responding, fire officials started receiving calls of multiple people in the water.
  • 1:50 a.m.: The first fire unit arrives on the scene and reports a complete collapse of Key Bridge, according to Wallace said. The fire department was given information that there were "likely multiple people on the bridge" and as a result, were now in the water, Wallace said.

Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters the crew on the ship issued a "mayday" call before it collided with the bridge, but it is unclear exactly what time that call went out at.

Divers have also been scouring the water searching for victims of the crash since the early hours of the morning.

CNN’s Melissa Alonso, Paul Murphy and Allegra Goodwin contributed to this report.

DALI ship collided with stone wall at Belgium port in 2016, according to ship tracking site

From CNN's Radina Gigova and Louis Mian in London

The Singaporean-flagged cargo ship DALI that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, was involved in an "incident" at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, port authorities confirmed to CNN.

Port authorities didn't provide additional details about the incident.

However, the Vessel Finder ship tracking website is reporting that the mega container ship c with the stone wall of the quay due to substantial stern momentum.

The allision (a maritime law term to describe when a moving vessel collides with a stationary object) occurred during unmooring maneuvers for leaving the port.

According to Vessel Finder, the incident occurred in good weather.

When asked for further details about the 2016 incident, the Port of Antwerp communications team said they can't provide additional information, barring the fact that the investigation was carried out by the Nautical Commission.

When contacted, the Nautical Commission couldn't share additional details at the time either.

After the allision with the stone wall of the quay, the ship suffered "sufficient damages in the stern and transom," according to Vessel Finder.

The ship remained afloat, but some breaches near the waterline required repairs. The berth was also seriously damaged and closed for cargo handling operations due to safety reasons, according to Vessel Finder. No one was injured.

There is no indication that Tuesday’s incident in Baltimore is related to this event in Belgium.

Emergency call from ship allowed authorities to close bridge and save lives, Maryland governor says

From CNN's Andy Rose

An emergency call from the container ship gave officials time to begin closing the Francis Scott Key Bridge to vehicle traffic before the ship slammed into it, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said on Tuesday.

“I'm thankful for the folks, once the warning came up and once notification came up that there was a mayday, who literally by being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge — these people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Moore said.

No timeline yet for reopening Baltimore port to vessel traffic

From CNN's Chris Isidore and Hanna Ziady

Wes Moore, center, holds a news conference near the scene where a container ship collided with a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, on March 26.

The Port of Baltimore is closed to vessel traffic until further notice, and it's too early to say when ships will begin calling on the port once again, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said Monday.

"Right now our exclusive focus is on saving lives, our exclusive focus is on search and rescue," he said at a news conference Monday.

The length of time that the channel is blocked by debris from the bridge will determine the extent of the economic impact of the accident on the local economy. While it could take years to rebuild the bridge — Moore described the process as "a long-term build" and one without a timeline as of yet. He added that removing the debris is likely to be a priority and could be accomplished much faster.

Some background: Overall, Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Until the channel is reopened, ships that had been destined for the Port of Baltimore are likely already changing course for other East Coast ports.

The DALI, the ship which hit the bridge and caused the collapse, was the only container vessel in the port at the time of the collision, but seven container vessels had been scheduled to arrive in Baltimore through Saturday, said Judah Levine, a researcher at logistics firm Freightos.

Bridge collapse may slow some auto imports and exports

From CNN's Peter Valdes-Dapena

A cargo ship is docked at the Port of Baltimore October 14, 2021, in Baltimore, Maryland.

A number of major automakers, including General Motors, Toyota and the Volkswagen Group, the maker of VW, Audi and Bentley cars and SUVs, use the Port of Baltimore to ship vehicles in and out of the east coast of the United States.

With Baltimore closed, automakers will now work to find other ports to bring vehicles in the US and to ship out ones that are manufactured here. GM, for instance, exports vehicles to South America and America through Baltimore.

"Our thoughts are with those who were affected and the Baltimore community," GM said in a statement shared with CNN. "We expect the situation to have minimal impact to our operations. We are working to re-route any vehicle shipments to other ports."

John Lawler, Ford's chief financial officer, said in a Bloomberg Television interview that Ford is rerouting auto parts to other East Coast ports. He said the situation will “lengthen the supply chain a bit.”

Truck traffic disruptions could cause issues even for automakers that aren't directly affected by port issues. Volkswagen's shipping facility in Baltimore, for instance, is on the eastern side of the bridge, and, so, continues to have access to the ocean.

"Last year, we received, processed and shipped approximately 100,000 vehicles through Baltimore for US dealers located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S," VW said in a statement. "We do not anticipate any impact on vessel operations but there may be trucking delays as traffic will be rerouted in the area."

BMW and Nissan both said the bridge collapse would not greatly impact their operations.

Pete Buttigieg is heading to Baltimore today

From CNN's Kaitlan Collins

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg testifies at Capitol Hill on September 20, 2023 in Washington, DC.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is heading to Baltimore today, a staff member with the agency confirmed to CNN.

Buttigieg spoke to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to a post from the secretary on X .

"Rescue efforts remain underway and drivers in the Baltimore area should follow local responder guidance on detours and response," Buttigieg wrote.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said in a news briefing Tuesday morning that authorities are searching for alternative transport options for the approximately 35,000 people using the bridge every day, noting that they will be directing people to use two major tunnels — the harbor tunnel and the Fort McHenry Tunnel — to avoid the site of collapse.

5 vehicles submerged in water have been found, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Alisha Ebrahimji

Authorities have been able to find three passenger vehicles, a cement truck and a fifth vehicle submerged in the water using infrared and side-scan sonar technology , Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN.

Up to eight dive teams were in the water performing search and rescue operations, he said, noting he's unsure if the fifth car is a passenger or work vehicle.

"It's the dynamic of an incident like this, operating in a space of uncertainty, it just makes things very difficult," he said. "Add darkness to it, it becomes dangerous."

Pilot on board the Dali tried to slow ship before it struck Key Bridge

The specially trained pilot ordered the rudder turned hard to the left and an anchor drop to steady the ship and slow it down, an industry official said.

When a massive ship lost power on its way out of the Port of Baltimore and headed toward a major bridge, the pilot ordered its rudder turned hard to the left and its left anchor dropped in an effort to slow the vessel and stop it swinging to the right, according to the head of a national association for ship pilots.

The 985-foot container ship, known as the Dali, left Baltimore about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, bound for Sri Lanka. Clay Diamond, the executive director of the American Pilots’ Association, said the ship experienced a “full blackout” around 1:20 a.m., meaning it lost both engine power and electrical power to the ship’s control and communications systems.

The ship was traveling at 8 knots, a normal speed for the area that Diamond described as “ahead slow.” The ship never regained engine power, but Diamond said a diesel backup generator did kick in, restoring the electrical systems — the possible source of a puff of black smoke visible in video of the collision circulating on social media.

Unable to slow the ship, Diamond said the pilot, who had more than a decade of experience, radioed an emergency message to have the Francis Scott Key Bridge closed. That mayday call has been credited with saving lives.

The huge vessel soon struck one of the bridge’s supports, causing it to crumple and crash down into the Patapsco River. Two members of a work crew on the bridge were rescued, but another six are presumed dead, the Coast Guard said. The collision led to the closure of the Baltimore port and leaves officials facing a massive cleanup and rebuilding job.

The 22 crew members on board the Dali all survived .

Who are the people presumed dead in the Baltimore bridge collapse?

Diamond said he had been in constant communication with the Association of Maryland Pilots on Tuesday and that the pilot on board had given a statement to investigators from the Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation into what went wrong. A second pilot aboard the Dali was an apprentice who had started his training last month, Diamond said.

Diamond said it is unusual for a ship to experience a total loss of power. “It’s not unheard of for a pilot to experience an engine casualty, it’s not that common to have a full blackout like this,” he said. “This is a complicated piece of equipment so it could be any number of causes.”

Foreign-flagged ships are required to have pilots aboard to guide them in and out of U.S. ports. Pilots have detailed knowledge of local shipping channels and complete an apprenticeship before becoming fully qualified. Diamond said they don’t take direct command of the vessel, but work with its crew to get it safely out to sea.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the body of water into which the Key Bridge collapsed. It was the Patapsco River, not the Chesapeake Bay.

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

Baltimore bridge collapse timeline: Inside the cargo ship collision

Just after midnight on Tuesday, the fully loaded container ship Dali lifted anchor and prepared to depart the Port of Baltimore with 23 crew members aboard, destined for Sri Lanka nearly 9,000 miles away.

There was no apparent indication of the catastrophe awaiting the vessel. Authorities said the bridge was undergoing maintenance at the time and that one lane in each direction remained open.

Here is how the incident unfolded:

12:39 a.m. -- The 984-foot-long, Singapore-flagged cargo ship pulls out of its berth at a marine terminal southeast of downtown Baltimore, according to ship's voyage data recorder (VDR) reviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators.

1 a.m. A livestream camera captures light traffic, including a tractor-trailer rig, moving across the 1.6-mile Key Bridge.

1:07 a.m. -- The cargo ship enters the Fort McHenry channel and begins to head down the Patapsco River toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to the VDR.

1:24 a.m. -- The livestream camera shows the cargo ship's lights suddenly going off and then coming back on.

1:24:59 a.m. -- Numerous audible alarms go off on the bridge of the container ship. The VDR temporarily goes off.

1:26 a.m. -- The Dali appears to lose its lights again as it drifts slightly to the right in the direction of one of the bridge's main center columns supporting the arched steel trusses of the span. At the time, vehicles can still be seen crossing the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said that about this time a mayday call was made from the vessel, giving transportation officials just enough time to order a halt to traffic approaching both ends of the bridge, likely saving lives.

1:27:39 a.m. -- The pilot aboard the ship makes a general VHF radio call for tugboats in the area to assist. At the same time, a Pilot Association dispatcher phones Maryland Transportation Authority duty officers regarding a blackout on the Dali.

1:27:04 a.m. -- The pilot aboard the Dali orders the vessel's port anchor be dropped, according to the VDR.

1:27:25 a.m. -- The pilot aboard the cargo ship issues a VHF radio call reporting the Dali has lost all power and was approaching the bridge. Around the same time, a Maryland Transportation Authority duty officer radios the agency's units, informing them to hold traffic at the south and north ends of the bridge, saying, "There's a ship approaching it [that] just lost their steering," according to a recording of the dispatch from Broadcastify.com. The livestream camera shows the cargo ship lights suddenly going off as the vessel appears to drift to the right in the direction of one of the main center columns supporting the arched steel trusses of the span.

1:28 a.m. -- Dark smoke appears to be coming from the cargo ship, which is moving at 7 knots, or 8 mph.

1:29:33 a.m. -- The VDR on the cargo ship records sounds consistent with the vessel hitting the bridge. Officials said at the time of the collision no traffic was crossing the bridge, but parked vehicles, apparently belonging to the maintenance crew filling potholes, were still on the span. Two maintenance workers survive, one by running from the bridge and the other by going into the water and swimming to shore. Six other maintenance workers remain unaccounted for. A law enforcement officer makes a desperate radio transmission to dispatch, saying, "The whole bridge just fell down. Start whoever, everybody. The whole bridge just collapsed."

1:39:39 a.m. -- The pilot on the Dali tells the Coast Guard over the VHF radio that the Key Bridge is down.

1:40 a.m. -- The Baltimore City Fire Department’s 911 center dispatch receives a call about a water rescue in the Patapsco River near the Key Bridge. As fire crews race to the bridge, they receive numerous calls indicating multiple people in the water.

1:50 a.m. -- Fire crews arrive at the scene and report a complete collapse of the Key Bridge and that multiple people were likely on the span when it occurred.

6:26 a.m. -- At an early morning news conference Tuesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said sonar detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water and that an all-out search-and-rescue operation involving police, firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard crews was underway to locate survivors.

FBI officials said agents were immediately sent to the bridge, arriving an hour after the collapse. At the White House, President Joe Biden held an early morning meeting with his advisors and ordered the use of resources to help in the rescue operation.

10 a.m. -- At a mid-morning news conference Tuesday, the governor announced that the preliminary investigation showed the incident appeared to be a tragic accident.

"The preliminary investigation points toward an accident," Moore said. "We haven't seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack."

12:46 p.m. -- During a press conference Tuesday afternoon from the White House, Biden addressed the bridge collapse. "We’re going to send all the federal resources they need as we respond to this emergency," he said, referring to his conversation with Baltimore officials.

"We're incredibly grateful for the brave rescuers who immediately rushed to the scene. And to the people of Baltimore, we want to say, we're with you, we're going to stay with you for as long as it takes," said Biden.

The president echoed local, state and federal officials who said investigators have found no evidence linking the incident to terrorism. Biden called it a "terrible incident and accident."

2:30 p.m. -- Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, says at a news conference that the agency's investigators arrived at the scene at 6 a.m. Tuesday and were launching their probe of the bridge collapse.

7:30 p.m. -- On Tuesday night, the U.S. Coast Guard said it would be suspending search and rescue efforts and began recovery efforts at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

"Based on the length of time that we've gone in the search, the extensive search efforts that we put into it, the water temperature -- at this point, we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive," Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath told reporters.

Why the Baltimore Bridge Collapsed So Quickly

The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sits on top of a container ship after the bridge collapsed Baltimore...

Just shy of half past 1 in the morning, the MV Dali , a giant container ship, was sailing gently out of the port of Baltimore when something went terribly wrong. Suddenly, lights all over the 300-meter-long vessel went out. They flicked on again a moment later, but the ship then began to veer to the right, toward one of the massive pylon-like supports on the Francis Scott Key truss bridge—a huge mass of steel and concrete that spans the Patapsco River.

The Dali ’s lights went out a second time. Then the impact came. The ship plowed into the support, with large sections of the bridge’s main truss section instantly snapping apart and falling into the river. It took just 20 seconds or so for the structure to come down.

Now, a major US port is in disarray, and several people who were working on the bridge at the time of its collapse are missing. A rescue operation is underway. President Biden has called the disaster a “terrible accident.” Ship traffic is currently stuck on either side of the crash site, and a major roadway through Baltimore has been cut off.

“It’s a dreadful tragedy and something you hope never to see,” says David Knight, a bridge expert and specialist adviser to the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers. But commenting on footage of the bridge collapse , he says he is not surprised by the manner in which it crumpled.

Large steel structures may seem invulnerable, but steel, explains Knight, is relatively lightweight for its size. As soon as it is pushed or pulled the wrong way with enough force, it can fold like paper. In this case, the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a “continuous,” or unjointed, bridge that had a 366-meter-long central truss section. (Truss bridges use steel beams, arranged in triangular shapes, to support their load.) The central truss was made up of three horizontal stretches, known as spans, with two sets of supports holding these above the water. It was the third-largest structure of its kind in the world.

The Baltimore Bridge Collapse Is About to Get Even Messier

Aarian Marshall

The Earth Will Feast on Dead Cicadas

“When you take a support away, there is very little in the way of robustness,” says Knight. “It will drag down, as we saw, all three spans.” The separate approach spans remain standing. There is nothing in Knight’s view that immediately suggests any structural problem with the bridge. An engineering firm, Hardesty & Hanover, confirmed to WIRED that it performed an inspection of the bridge in 2019, and that other inspections have been carried out since, but did not provide any additional details on the state of the structure. WIRED has approached H&H for further comment. In June last year, the US Federal Highway Administration rated the condition of the bridge as satisfactory .

The immense force of the container ship impact should not be underestimated, adds Knight. Such vessels require a lot of power and time—perhaps many minutes—to come to a complete stop. The Francis Scott Key Bridge was completed in 1977. In more recent decades, bridge engineers have commonly incorporated defenses to reduce the potential damage by ship strikes when bridges are erected in similar locations, Knight says. These include hydraulic barriers and additional concrete around the base of bridge supports, for instance. However, even with such fortifications in place, heavy strikes can still cause devastating damage.

It is not clear why lights turned off and on again on the Dali , a Singapore-flagged ship built in 2015. “That is an indication of a massive problem,” says Salvatore Mercogliano, a maritime historian at Campbell University in North Carolina and a YouTuber who has analyzed the crash .

At the time of the accident, two pilots—mariners who board a ship to help it navigate particular stretches of water, including in and out of ports—from Baltimore were on board. The Dali was broadcasting its position publicly via the automatic identification system (AIS) and was traveling at a speed of over 8.5 knots. It then slowed to around 6 knots in the moments before the crash, according to AIS data .

Both pilots and all crew members on the Dali are accounted for. There are no reports of injuries, the ship’s management company, Synergy Group, said in a statement on March 26.

ABC News reports that the crew of the vessel made a desperate mayday call in an attempt to warn transport officials that the crash was about to occur. A report from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, seen by ABC, says the Dali “lost propulsion” and that the crew were aware they had “lost control” of the ship. Maryland governor Wes Moore told reporters that , thanks to the mayday call, officials were able to stem the flow of traffic over the bridge, an intervention that he says “saved lives.”

Mercogliano says it is very difficult for ships of this size to make rapid adjustments to their trajectories. Video footage shows a sudden outpouring of smoke from the vessel’s stack, indicating a change in engine activity of some kind. What is particularly disturbing is that, in this case, the vessel ends up plowing straight into one of the key supports for the bridge, clearly off course. No information as to why this happened has become public.

Photographs of the aftermath show the bow of the ship pinned beneath fallen sections of the bridge . The anchor chain is visible, meaning that at some point the anchor was dropped, though it is not certain whether this happened before or after impact. The chain appears to be at an angle, however, which Mercogliano says could be a sign that it was dropped shortly before the crash and dragged for a brief time.

Lawyer James Turner of Quadrant Chambers in London specializes in, among other things, ship collisions. He says that there would have been no automated systems on board a merchant ship of this kind able to prevent the impact. Information from radar, AIS, and visual observations would have been available to the crew, however.

But data-collecting systems may now reveal exactly what happened. As on airplanes, commercial ships have data and audio recorders on the bridge, which are often a key source of information for investigators post-incident. “The master will hit a button and that ensures that the last two hours of audio recording are preserved, as well as all the data from the various parts of the ship, like the engine and steering and so on,” explains Turner. “That can be downloaded and queried.”

He adds that estimates of the ship’s speed at the time of the incident as recorded by AIS are likely “99.99 percent accurate.”

For now, the focus of responders will be on locating survivors from the fallen bridge. Two people have been rescued, one of whom is in the hospital. Six construction workers remain missing .

The disaster has come at a difficult time for shipping, with drought afflicting the Panama Canal and Houthi attacks striking multiple vessels in the Red Sea in recent months. Somali piracy is on the rise again , also. The grounding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal is very much still within recent memory—it occurred a mere three years ago.

The Port of Baltimore insists in a statement that it has not been shut down—road vehicles are still operating within the port—however, all ship traffic in and out is suspended until further notice. AIS data reveals around a dozen commercial vessels at anchor outside the port, their entry now blocked by the stricken bridge and the Dali . It will take some time for the US Army Corps of Engineers to remove the steel pieces of the bridge, which present a significant threat to passing vessels, from the river.

“Whatever ships are in the port are now stuck,” says Mercogliano, who notes that Baltimore is an important port in terms of car deliveries and coal exports.

Overall, he argues, maritime operations are extremely safe today, though the volume and velocity of trade mean that when things go wrong it can be especially serious.

“We move goods a lot faster than ever before, and there’s very little margin for error,” he says. “When there is a mistake, the mistakes tend to be very large.”

What caused the Dali to slam into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge? What we know about what led up to the collapse

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: March 27, 2024 / 7:43 PM EDT / CBS News

Shocking video showed the moment a massive cargo ship collided with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, sending parts of the decades-old suspension bridge, along with people and vehicles, into the Patapsco River.

Six people who were on the bridge are missing and presumed dead , officials said late Tuesday. Two others were rescued from the water. All eight were construction workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge, officials said. There were 22 Indian nationals, including two pilots, aboard the cargo ship.

Investigators and officials are now crafting a timeline of events, including what caused the Singapore-owned vessel , called the Dali, to hit the bridge just minutes after leaving port . Here's what we know so far.

What caused the Dali to slam into the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Dali, which was chartered by shipping giant Maersk and operated by Synergy Marine Group, hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore.

An unclassified memo issued by CISA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said the ship reported losing propulsion . Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the ship's crew reported a "power issue." A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash, said the agency still needs to verify that the Dali lost power prior to striking the bridge column.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News multiple alarms rang out on the ship, alerting pilots and crew to an issue on board. The crew ran several system tests to attempt to remedy the loss of propulsion from the motor, but the tests proved unsuccessful. At that point, the ship's pilots alerted the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland Transit Authority.

That alert allowed local officials to stop traffic on the bridge and likely saved lives , officials said.

The ship's crew made an effort to deploy the anchor, though it remains unclear how much progress was made, multiple officials said. The massive ship is over 900 feet long and was moving at about 8 knots, or just over 9 miles per hour. Authorities said that speed is considered "very rapid."

Captain Michael Burns, executive director of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Maritime Center for Responsible Energy, told CBS Boston  that stopping a cargo ship is difficult, especially in such a short time.

"It's extremely challenging, and takes years of experience and training in order to be able to do this safely," he said. "It can take up to a mile for some of these ships to get stopped, depending on the circumstances, so we really need to think well out, miles ahead of the ship."

Why did the Dali lose propulsion?

It's not clear what caused the vessel to lose propulsion, officials said.

A spokesperson for the NTSB told CBS Baltimore that it had collected the ship's data recorder, and would review and analyze the material there to determine what happened aboard the vessel in the moments before the collision.

That data recorder will also be used to establish a timeline of events.

What happens when a ship loses propulsion?

James Mercante, the president of the New York Board of Pilot Commissioners, told CBS News that a ship that has lost steering and power is essentially "a dead ship just being carried by the current or its own momentum."

He highlighted a moment in the video of the crash that appears to show a "big, big puff of black, real dark black smoke" which might indicate that the vessel's power was "restored at the last minute" and that the pilot was "attempting to make an emergency maneuver" to avoid hitting the bridge. However, he emphasized that it would be difficult to stop the massive cargo ship, especially in such a short time.

"It would take quite a while — probably the length of five [or] six football fields — to bring that ship to a stop, even after dropping the anchors, because of its power and momentum," said Mercante. "This is a behemoth."

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.
