5 Yacht Interior Designers To Consider For Your Next Refit Or New Build
The best yacht interior specialists..
The world of superyacht interior design deserves its own Netflix series. Seriously. It’s a high-class, ultra-luxury, competitive business that turns a small idea into a masterpiece. A superyacht interior should have equal parts wow-factor and functionality to elevate the boat. It takes a particular eye for art, detail, layout, and innovation to be a top name in (any type of) design industry.
For most firms, designing a superyacht is a personal experience. They’re masters at balancing a thousand different elements to create a single, elegant outcome. Elite design studios have the skills, talent, and intuition to create a layout, design, and decoration that wins awards. We already highlighted impressive yacht interiors , but who are the teams behind scenes? Here are 5 yacht interior designers to consider for your next refit or new build.
Italians have an eye for art and design, and award-winning design firm Hot Lab seamlessly integrates sophisticated detail into their work. Their interior designs are sharp, stylish, and modern. Over the years, Hot Lab has received several international awards, including World Superyacht Awards and Showboats Design , World Yachts Trophies, and Finest Interior Awards . The studio has solid relationships with both Italian and foreign shipyards and works together on both custom and series-produced yachts.
A great example of interior design by Hot Lab is on Hull #5 of the Numarine 32XP (available for a Summer 2022 delivery). The studio incorporates clever lighting throughout the yacht to give it a bright atmosphere that highlights materials from Armani Casa and custom marbles in greens and blues.
Contact Denison yacht broker Alex G. Clarke to inquire about the Numarine 32XP.
2. Giorgio Cassetta
Italian superyacht designer Giorgio Cassetta is the dark night of yacht design. He flys under the radar yet he’s worked on some of the biggest and most stunning yachts in the world. His designs have personality, with a flare of timelessness and functionality that instantly makes you appreciate the setting. Past clients include Bennetti and Cigarette Racing, but he’s currently working with Alpha Yachts to design custom new build yachts.
Boutique shipyard Alpha Custom Yachts worked with Giorgio Cassetta to create an elegant interior for the Spritz 102 . According to Cassetta, the yacht has the feel of a Miami villa combined with great functionality. When inside the yacht, guests are never disconnected from the environment. The installation of the windows ensures constant visibility of the water and sky, even from the bed. The effect is particularly stunning in the full-beam owner’s cabin where the windows are oversized and less than half a meter above the water.
Contact Denison yacht broker David Johnson to inquire about the Spritz 102.
3. Gregory C. Marshall
Gregory C. Marshall, Naval Architect Ltd. is a Canadian-based yacht design firm that has built a reputation as one of the top naval architecture firms in the world. For more than 35 years, founder Greg Marshall and his business partner, Gordon Galbraith, designed megayachts and commercial craft for a variety of clients Their designs gain attention as they push the limits of traditional expectations.
The interior of CRESCENT LADY , a 117’ Crescent 2020, is a Gregory C. Marchall design. Natural light floods into the interior space from expansive windows throughout the yacht. Inside, you’ll find clean, contemporary styling, which is complemented by high-quality joinery and modern fabrics and soft goods. Gregory C. Marchall created an interior that will stand the test of time onboard this Crescent 117, whose owner is accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin for the purchase of the yacht.
Contact Denison yacht broker Ari Sherr to inquire about CRESCENT LADY.
4. Patrick Knowles Design
Patrick Knowles Designs is one of America’s top yacht design firms specializing in custom megayachts, superyachts, and aircraft interiors. Patrick Knowles and his team apply their skills to ensure innovative creativity, attention to detail, and commitment to on-time delivery. Their ability to listen, understand, interpret, and transform ideas into results exceeds client expectations.
You may recognize a Patrick Knowles Design onboard REVIVE, a 150’ Richmond that was sold by Will Noftsinger and Chris Daves in March 2021. It’s one of the last (and some may say, the best) Richmond yachts ever built. In 2019, the second owner spent roughly $2 million making REVIVE perfect, and that included a completely new interior decor package by Patrick Knowles Designs.
5. Reymond Langton
You’ll know a Reymond Langton design when you see it; the British design studio applies innovation, inspiration, and functionality to their work. Most notably, ARKADIA (formerly known as Project TRITON) a 50-meter new construction Heesen , boasts an elegant interior designed by Reymond Langton.
The sophisticated layout accommodates 10 guests and 9 crew with a full-beam owner’s stateroom, 3 double guest suites, and an additional 1 twin guest suite. She promises the best of the yachting lifestyle. ARKADIA was sold by David Johnson and delivered to her owners in April 2021.
The creative world of yacht design is impressive. It takes patience, teamwork, and passion to become a top player in the industry. Whether you visualize a modern, dark, traditional, or quirky yacht interior, consider one of these interior design firms for your next refit or new build project. They’ll turn your idea into a masterpiece. Contact a Denison yacht broker to find a featured yacht for sale or yacht for charter with an impressive interior.

Yacht Interior Designers Guide: To Refit Or Not To Refit
Having spent quite a bit of time at various shipyards this first couple months of 2019, I am noticing that the yards are buzzing with refits and showing no signs of slowing down.
Why the refits? We are continuing to see yacht buyers who are interested in customizing a yacht but are unwilling to wait several years or pay the financial premiums that come with building a new custom yacht. If this is the case, an ideal solution would be a brokerage yacht that is purchased with a refit in mind.
A yacht refit can give an existing vessel an entirely new identity more expeditiously and more cost effectively. Great value can be achieved from successfully refitting an existing yacht to the buyer’s personal tastes and requirements. Either from the outset of ownership or during, a refitted yacht can exponentially add to the yachts aesthetic value, the buyer’s on board experience, and to the safety of their family and crew.
Yacht refit options range from minimal to massive.
Just about anything is possible with a yacht refit, allowing total customization within the yacht’s hull structure. One of the first steps is to determine what type of refit the vessel requires.
Does the yacht require a major refit, or “gut-n-chuck”? A “gut-n-chuck” consists of structural changes to exterior decks, walls or stairs, upgrades and repairs to the vessels mechanical and electrical systems, lighting, audio visual, plumbing, overheads, space planning, built in furnishings, mill work, solid surfaces, appliances, hardware, loose furniture, upholstery, window treatments carpet, wall paper, plus all of the soft goods, art and accessories. You can read about one of our most current extensive and highly custom yacht interior refits 142’ Christensen Lady Bee Refit: Striking A Balance Between Design & Desire on our Blog.
Or does the vessel require a minor yacht interior refit, or “fluff-n-puff”? A “fluff-n-puff” includes fabrication and installation of soft goods such as bedding, upholstery, window treatments, carpet, wall paper, headliner, loose furniture, art and accessories.
A client who was a lifelong boater decided to charter the 86’ Nordhavn, (named Cary Ali at the time) and immediately made the decision to purchase her. After spending some time on the 86’ Nordhavn VivieRae , he decided to build the larger 96’ Nordhavn VivieRae II . He engaged us to do a minor refit on the yacht to enjoy during the two year built process of the 96’ which he also hired us to design.
Sometimes an Owner, Owner’s Representative or Yacht Broker will request that a Yacht Interior Designer “fluff-n-puff” or even stage the interior of a yacht to assist with the sale. This was the case with the 209’ Royal Denship Turmoil that we completed just in time for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. You can read more about staging in our blog post “Staging Yacht Interiors” .
The key to successfully refitting a yacht is the effective planning and correct execution of the plan.
The success of a yacht refit and the difference between a smooth project or one full of setbacks and frustration comes down to the plans and decisions made prior to beginning the refit.
The key players are the yacht interior designer, captain and shipyard who execute the plan; the designer making interior decisions, the captain and / or shipyard making mechanical decisions, and the owner that approves the financial and time implications.
Together, It is crucial for this team to prioritize goals, map out a course of action and create a plan that anticipates and considers any potential unforeseen issues that may arise. As work begins, unexpected surprises will need to be addressed promptly and methodically.
Realistic budgets can work to a Yacht Owner’s advantage.
The budget should be realistic and contain a contingency for unforeseen conditions.
The Owner should acknowledge their budget and be honest with their team, the Yacht Interior Designer and Captain. Some Owners are reluctant to divulge the actual budget to the designer. Setting a realistic budget will help an owner keep track of where their money is going and what it is going toward. The Designer would not want to give the Owner a Cadillac if they had a Bentley in mind or the other way around. The Owner must discuss the budget with the Designer and the Captain and determine how much money should be allotted for items such as the interior, paint, generators, etc. A wish list should be created and future Owners and charter guests should always be factored in to maintain the yacht’s value. All of the experts on the team must be on the same page to determine if everything desired will fit into the budget.
It is what you don’t see that can cause unexpected budgetary issues. To keep costs from creeping up during a yacht refit, quickly identify any additional costs or delays and address them. Almost anything can be done, it just may cost more time and money.

Behind the Scenes: The Refit Process from Start to Finish
Cruising the seas is an irresistible realm of luxury and adventure, where the opulent vessels of today embark on journeys that traverse endless horizons. Yet, concealed from the casual observer, lies a remarkable transformational process at the heart of these maritime icons — the refit process. This process is nothing short of an art form, rejuvenating boats, and elevating them to new heights in performance, aesthetics, and functionality.
Boat refits are the silent symphonies of transformation, where vessels are reborn and their stories are rewritten. Behind the scenes, hidden from the prying eyes of onlookers, skilled artisans, naval architects, engineers, and visionary owners come together to breathe new life into these nautical beauties. With meticulous planning and craftsmanship, they ensure that every vessel, from the gracefully sleek to the imposingly grand, remains at the zenith of maritime excellence.
In this comprehensive exploration, we embark on a journey through the captivating world of refits, where every phase of the process is a testament to human ingenuity and dedication. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final unveiling of a rejuvenated vessel, we uncover the intricacies, craftsmanship, and sheer artistry that transform aging boats into modern masterpieces. Join us as we lift the curtain on the fascinating journey that turns dreams into reality upon the azure canvas of the open sea.
1. The Vision and Planning Stage
A boat refit commences with a vision, often stemming from the owner’s desires and needs. Owners collaborate closely with experienced refit specialists, sharing their goals for the vessel. During this stage, a comprehensive plan is laid out, covering everything from technical enhancements to interior design changes. Every detail is meticulously considered, ensuring the refit aligns with the owner’s vision.
2. The Inspection and Assessment
Before any work begins, the boat undergoes a thorough inspection and assessment. This step is akin to a health check for the vessel. Engineers, naval architects, and marine technicians meticulously examine the boat’s structure, systems, and components. They identify areas that require attention, from mechanical systems and engines to the integrity of the hull. This assessment serves as the foundation upon which the entire refit project is built.
3. The Design and Conceptualization
Following the assessment, the design phase takes center stage. Interior designers, naval architects, and engineers collaborate to bring the owner’s vision to life. Innovative design concepts, materials, and technologies are explored to optimize both aesthetics and functionality. Detailed plans are developed, covering every aspect of the refit, from cabin layouts to exterior styling.
4. The Deconstruction and Stripping
With design plans in hand, the vessel enters the deconstruction phase. This stage involves carefully stripping the vessel down to its core. Old components and materials are removed with precision, making way for the new enhancements. This phase is akin to a meticulous surgical operation, requiring skill and care.
5. Technical and Mechanical Upgrades
At the heart of the refit lies technical and mechanical upgrades. Engines are overhauled or replaced with more efficient models, propulsion systems are modernized with the help of Seakeeper, and navigation equipment is updated. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure it operates at peak performance. This phase involves precise engineering and a commitment to enhancing the boat’s capabilities.
6. Interior Refurbishment
Simultaneously, the interior spaces undergo a transformative refurbishment. Every detail, from luxurious staterooms and salons to galleys and entertainment areas, is meticulously attended to. The goal is to create an environment that balances comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. Skilled craftsmen and designers work tirelessly to bring the owner’s interior design dreams to fruition.
7. Exterior Enhancements
The vessel’s exterior is not overlooked. Paint and coatings are refreshed to restore the vessel’s gleaming appearance. Hulls are polished to perfection. Exterior spaces such as decks and lounges are redesigned to maximize usability and visual appeal. This phase ensures that the boat’s exterior matches the renewed elegance of its interior.
8. Rigorous Testing
Before the boat returns to the water, it undergoes rigorous testing. Every system is tested exhaustively, engines are run extensively, and every component is checked for proper functionality. Safety and performance are paramount during this phase, ensuring that the boat operates seamlessly upon completion.
9. Sea Trials
Sea trials provide the ultimate assessment of a refit’s success. The boat embarks on test voyages to ensure that all systems perform flawlessly. Owners and refit specialists closely monitor the vessel’s performance, making necessary adjustments as needed. These trials guarantee that the boat not only meets but exceeds the owner’s expectations in real-world conditions.
10. Final Touches and Delivery
Once sea trials are successfully completed, the final touches are added. Every detail is meticulously inspected to ensure perfection and also detailed immaculately. The boat is then delivered to its owner, marking the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. This final phase is the realization of the owner’s vision, and the boat is ready to grace the seas once more in renewed splendor.
The refit process is a harmonious symphony of vision, precision, and innovation. Behind the scenes, skilled professionals collaborate to breathe new life into vessels, ensuring they continue to grace the seas with beauty, performance, and luxury. Whether you’re embarking on your own refit journey or simply admiring these magnificent vessels from afar, understanding the meticulous process behind the scenes is a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring allure of the open waters.

An Informative Guide to Proper Yacht Refit
Posted March 1, 2018 in Brokerage & New Build by Janine St.Denis
Walking through the stages of a proper refit
What are the first steps? Plan — proper upfront planning is key to a successful refit. A project plan should be developed for any refit, no matter how big or small. Make sure this plan includes a scope of work (task list), required specifications for each task, and a list of materials with lead times to source those materials. The plan should also include a list of associated risks and contingency plans. Project dependencies — those tasks that cannot be started before another task is first completed — also should be noted.
Select a Yard — there are two models for yards: full-service and marketplace-model yards. At full-service yards, the work is completed by the yard, and outside contractor invoices will be marked up by the yard. You also may face other fees, such as gate fees, for bringing in outside expertise. At marketplace-model yards, like Lauderdale Marine Center, the vessel is free to choose a preferred contractor team for the work with no additional mark-ups or fees.
Commence Work — once work begins, the project should be managed daily. Track tasks and make necessary contingency plans as needed. Be sure to check the work and verify the quality. Document the results of work inspections and, as the project goes along, sign off on completed tasks.
Communicate — constant communication between all parties ensures the success of any project. Captains, owners, crew, project management, contractors and the yard all want the project to be successful. When the entire team understands the status of the project, everyone benefits.
What is the most important aspect of a yacht refit? Understanding the entire work list within the given time frame is first, followed closely by choosing the proper yard and vendors.
What is the most unexpected issue that comes up during the refit process? Probably not knowing the full extent of the project that you are about to open up and finding must-do tasks that never were discussed or even thought about prior to the project.
What is the biggest pitfall of a refit? The biggest refit pitfall usually is not understanding the size and scope of the project, which will always add time and stretch or exceed the budget.
How can owners help to ensure refits go as smoothly as possible? The biggest component of guaranteeing a successful refit is ensuring owners are realistic about the amount of time and money that will be required to complete the scope of work. For small or large refit projects, owners should consider hiring a project manager. Project managers are able to direct all of the intricacies of a refit project — from sourcing parts and overseeing contractors to helping ensure the project stays on time and on budget. A project manager will safeguard the refit’s technical expertise as needed, especially if the scope of work includes changes to the vessel’s structure.
How can captains and crew help to ensure refits go as smoothly as possible? Understanding the vessel on which they work plays a major part. When captains and crew have proper, up-to-date maintenance logs and are proactive with maintenance tasks every day, refits move smoothly.
What is the captain’s role during a refit? The captain’s main role is liaison between the project manager, owner, yard and crew members on board

Architects and Fashion Designers Are Penning Yachts, and It’s Changing How They’re Made
This is the award-winning Here Comes the Sun , the biggest yacht ever built by the Dutch yard Amels , and widely acknowledged as the pride and joy of New Zealand billionaire and passionate superyacht collector Graeme Hart.
The yacht hit the headlines when it was delivered in 2017 and showcased at that year’s Miami International Boat Show. With its head-turning exterior design by Britain’s Tim Heywood and luxurious interior by fellow Brit Andrew Winch, it was the undisputed star of the show.
The original owner was reportedly Russian drilling industry tycoon Alexander Dzhaparidze, known for naming his superyachts after Beatles tunes. Before Here Comes the Sun , he owned the Amels-built Imagine before moving on to another Heywood/Winch-designed Amels, the 197-foot Come Together.
After being snapped up by the new owner in late 2019, Here Comes the Sun went back to the Damen Yachting/Amels sheds in Vlissingen in southwest Holland for what would turn out to be a near-total makeover.
Dutch naval architects Azure Yacht Design were called in to mastermind slicing open the hull and adding the 20-foot extension. They also stretched the sundeck to create that second helipad—there’s also a touch-and-go pad on the foredeck—big enough to land a Bell 429 or Airbus H145.
The refit also saw the swimming pool on the main deck—once again the key word here— stretched to 23 feet, while two new bridge-deck VIP suites were added, each with 39-foot-long private balconies.
Saving one of the biggest jobs until last, the entire yacht was sanded, re-faired and re-painted, switching out the original, rather milquetoast, beige-yellow hull color to a classy navy blue with stark white topsides.
“It was a huge scope of work. To pull it off in just over a year was a real credit to Amels,” said Colin Boyle, the vessel’s captain since 2019, who helped project-manage the refit during the 16-month stay in the yard.
Damen Yachting sales manager Michael Coens added: “Many of the same craftsmen and women who were meticulously involved in the original build, worked on her during the refit, remolding and reshaping her into the new masterpiece she is.”
The refit was rewarded with the “Best Rebuilt Yacht” trophy at the 2022 World Superyacht Awards.
Accommodations-wise, within the 292-foot length, sprawling 47-foot beam, and 2,955 gross tonnage, the yacht can accommodate 20 guests in 10 cabins, tended to by a crew of 27.
Without doubt, one of the standout features is the truly massive, full-deck owner’s suite. It comes with a master bedroom boasting forward views through 180-degree wraparound glass, a private lounge with a balcony, office, his-and-hers bathrooms and spacious dressing room.
For relaxation, the owner can kick back in a huge private salon with comfy sofas, dining area, bar, and pool table. Towards the stern, there’s the full-beam owner’s sun deck with sofas, lounges and a dining table for ten. Steps away is a tiered movie theater.
Naturally, there’s no shortage of water toys. The main tender is a sleek, custom-built 34-foot limo built by Germany’s Yachtwerft Meyer and painted in matching navy and white. There’s also a 30-foot RIB and 23-foot Super Air Nautique wakesurf boat. Plus, a small armada of Sea-Doos and seabobs.
The vessel is listed jointly with brokers Fraser and Burgess.
