Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Home Environment Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Established by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club de Monaco is the emblem of Monegasque yachting. Since 2014, it has had its own emblematic building, a striking piece of architecture by Britain’s Norman Foster.

With its sleek lines and architecture reminiscent of an ocean liner, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s headquarters building never fails to provoke a reaction. Officially unveiled in 2014, it was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Norman Foster.

“This building has been designed like a miniature city, integrated into the existing urban landscape of Monaco,” explains the architect, who was also behind the Millennium Bridge (2000), Millau Viaduct (2004), Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona (2007) and Vieux Port in Marseille (2013).

Chaired since 1984 by Prince Albert II , the Yacht Club de Monaco, with its 2,000 members representing 60 nationalities and prestigious yachts , illustrates Monaco’s historic role in the world of yachting .

The first regattas organised in the Principality date back to 1862, while the first international motorboat races – which arrived with the development of the first combustion engines – were contested in Port Hercule in 1904.

Today, the Yacht Club de Monaco organises a number of regattas, such as Monaco Classic Week, the Primo Cup and, more recently, the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge One.

“As part of our ‘Monaco, capital of yachting’ project, through this event the Principality helps to bring together manufacturers, engineers, shipyards, students and ship owners to share their experiences and respond to the energy and environmental challenges facing the nautical sector,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The YCM has two influential ambassadors: Le Tuiga, considered by sailor Eric Tabarly to be “one of the most beautiful yachts in the world”, takes part in major classic yacht events, while the Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II) , the eco-friendly vessel that took Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic in summer 2019 to attend the UN Climate Summit, finished fifth in the Vendée Globe 2020, the first time it has taken part in the race.

Club's History

A long maritime tradition.

The first regattas were held in 1862, encouraged by Prince Charles III who wanted his country to be a showcase for yachting and technological innovation. The Société des Régates de Monaco was established in 1888 by a group of men passionate about sailing and rowing who from 1889 attracted famous international regattas. Prince Albert I inherited this passion for the sea and would go on to become an early pioneer of modern oceanography and a famous navigator, who would inaugurate the Oceanographic Museum in March 1912.

In 1904, the SBM launched the Exhibition and International Motorboat Meeting where leading car manufacturers tested their new engines, as road races were banned because they caused too many fatalities. All the big yachts flocked to the Principality to be privileged spectators of these exceptional gatherings. Within a few years, Monaco had become the centre of the world when it came to innovation and fashionable water sports.

In 1953, Prince Rainier III, a true visionary in every respect, was thinking beyond the sporting aspect. Keen for the Principality to have a yacht club like those he had visited when cruising on his boats, and convinced that “the future of Monaco lies with the sea,” he wanted to develop a structure capable of attracting and retaining the loyalty of the yachting fraternity worldwide.

As a result the Yacht Club de Monaco was established, the desire being that this Club “fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests of tourism and promotion of Monte-Carlo, and that at home and abroad fosters only affection and friends.” The defining focus of the Sovereign’s vision for the Yacht Club was that it be a key element in the future development of the port and tourism in the Principality.

On 17th June 1953, a Constitutive Assembly was held in the International Hydrographic Bureau’s premises and Prince Rainier agreed to be the Club’s president.

From 1954, the Yacht Club de Monaco re-launched the motorboat meetings, organised international events as well as many other activities (big game fishing, scuba-diving…), while training generations of sailors at the Sailing School set up in 1957. The result of all these events was a 50% increase in boats frequenting the harbour. In 1959, this ‘Builder Prince’ also encouraged Carlo Riva to build the first dry port and floating pontoons, and several decades later in 2002 was behind the semi-floating harbour wall, all of which have had a significant impact on the economy of a country that looks to the sea for its future prosperity.

In April 1984, HSH Prince Albert II was appointed by his father Prince Rainier III to assume the role of President of the Yacht Club de Monaco. Already very involved in the life of the Club, the Prince immediately set about developing the YCM’s sporting side, strengthening the training structure for young sailors and introducing new international-scale events. The first year of his presidency saw the Primo Cup launched, which would go on to become a major fixture in the Mediterranean’s one-design calendar, the Monaco-New York transatlantic race with the participation of the Biotonus-YCM team, and the Formula 40’ Grand Prix.

Convinced that understanding the past is the key to building the future, HSH Prince Albert II was also keen for there to be a focus on traditional yachting, which led to the organisation in 1994 of the first Monaco Classic Week; launch of a classic and vintage yacht regatta circuit, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts which it coordinated for five years; and of course the purchase of Tuiga in 1995, the YCM’s flagship.

In 2005, the President launched the La Belle Classe label to unite owners around a Charter promoting essential values: respect for etiquette, protecting the environment, preserving our maritime heritage and encouraging innovation in the superyacht sector, with the desire to support new destinations wanting to establish Yacht Clubs across the world.

On 20th June 2014, the Yacht Club turned a new page in its history with the opening of a new Clubhouse in a building designed by Lord Foster. In line with the Sovereign’s wishes, this superb showcase for the sector in Monaco led to the creation of the Cluster ‘Yachting Monaco’ to affirm the Principality’s position as luxury yachting’s world capital.

The Yacht Club of Monaco: a prestigious club

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a world-renowned institution located on the French Riviera, in the heart of the Principality of Monaco. Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III, it now has more than 2,500 members from more than 81 countries. The club is best known for its commitment to sailing, its fleet of luxury yachts and its large-scale events.

An iconic building designed by Norman Foster

The architecture of the Yacht Club of Monaco is remarkable. Designed by British architect Norman Foster, it was inaugurated in 2014. The building, 22 meters high, 204 meters long, with 5,000 m² of interior space and 4,000 m² of terraces, is reminiscent of the transatlantic liners of the last century. It is located along the Quai Louis-II, at Port Hercule, and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the Rocher of Monaco. The building was built in compliance with HQE (high environmental quality) standards, limiting the environmental impact during construction and throughout the life of the structure. It is home to two of the Principality's most prestigious institutions: the Nautical Society and the Yacht Club of Monaco.

Elegant interior design

The interior of the Yacht Club of Monaco is just as remarkable as its exterior architecture. The interior spaces were decorated by renowned French decorator Jacques Grange. The club's rooms and terraces look like ship's decks, all made of European oak by local carpenters. The warm tones of wood are found in the interior spaces, creating an atmosphere of both tradition and modernity. The most prestigious areas of the club house – lounges, private areas and guest rooms – are furnished by Fendi Casa. The palette is made of soft pastels and shades of nature, from leather to sand to ivory.

A fleet of luxury yachts

A quarter of the world's 100 largest yachts fly the club's banner, which shows its prestige and fame. The club hosts large-scale sailing events, such as the Rolex Cup, the Monaco Classic Week (a unique gathering in the world of classic sailing and motor yachts, motor boats and 12' dinghies) and the Monaco Yacht Show, an annual international show dedicated to yachting that is held every year at the end of September in the enclosure of the Port Hercule of Monaco. The event, established in 1991, features an exhibition of exceptional yachts afloat as well as exhibition stands on the docks. It is now an iconic event popular with visitors who come to discover an incredible concentration of yachts available for purchase or charter.

Dining and relaxation at the Yacht Club of Monaco

The Yacht Club of Monaco offers its members a wide choice of quality activities and services, for an unforgettable experience. In addition to water activities, the Club also has facilities for dining and relaxing.

The Restaurant 1909, located on the terrace of the Club, offers refined and elegant cuisine. Executive Chef Renato Secchi and his team concoct tasty dishes, based on fresh and local products, to offer an unforgettable culinary experience. The terrace offers stunning views of the marina, for a romantic dinner or a sunny lunch.

The Sunrise, with its 180° panoramic terrace overlooking Port Hercule and the bay, is the ideal place to enjoy a buffet of appetizers and desserts, as well as a dish of the day, during summer lunches. The idyllic setting and tasty cuisine make it a popular place for members.

The Yacht Club de Monaco also has a wellness area to relax. Members can also enjoy the pool and gym equipped with modern machinery to keep fit.

Become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco: the application and sponsorship process

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a very selective club, reserved for a high-end clientele passionate about sailing and the nautical world. To become a member of the club, it is mandatory to follow a rigorous application and sponsorship process. All candidates must be presented by two sponsors, members of the YCM for more than one year. Once the application file has been completed and signed by the candidate and his two sponsors, it is examined by an admission committee chaired by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, president of the club. If the application is accepted, the official induction of the new member is done at a cocktail party in the presence of all members of the club. The sponsor plays a vital role in the admissions process as they are responsible for the new member they introduce. He must integrate him into the life of the club, introduce him to other members, involve him in the various activities, but also ensure that he adheres to the philosophy and values of the YCM. Only one application per sponsor may be proposed per session, and the Admissions Committee reserves the right to refuse it without notification.

In conclusion, the Yacht Club of Monaco is a world-renowned institution, a true emblem of the Principality. The Club offers a wide range of activities for all ages, from sailing lessons for children to high-level regattas for seasoned competitors. It also offers a unique setting for relaxing, entertaining and dining, with top quality facilities and stunning views of the Bay of Monaco. Yacht Club de Monaco

HelloMonaco

Monaco Yacht Club Celebrates its 70th Anniversary with a Summer Cocktail

Yacht Club

Particularly special this year… the summer cocktail, much anticipated, dovetailed with the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Yacht Club , whose birth year is 1953 .

Every occasion at the Yacht Club in 2023 is naturally turning into a double celebration often made extra special by the presence of the Sovereign , who on this occasion was surrounded by about 1500 members .

A perfect time to remember Prince Albert’s father, Rainier III , who was energized to bring together all those who love the sea in a unique Club within the Principality. Prince Albert speaks proudly of his father’s vision to make the YCM an exclusive place where yachting is lived, enjoyed and celebrated, thus contributing to the promotion of Monaco as a global destination . And the tribute to Prince Rainier continues with praise for his acumen in creating the Yacht Club to preserve and pass on maritime traditions, while promoting innovation and the development of yachting.

And, as if standing on Prince Rainier’s shoulders, Prince Albert has placed priority on protecting the oceans first and foremost bringing environmental issues to the fore as a priority. In effect the Principality is a beacon for the nautical industry, acting as a catalyst in environmental transition.

More and more the Monaco Yacht Club members have become demonstrators of new eco-responsible solutions played out through the theme “Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting”.

High profile also and a regular reminder of the impetus towards green innovation is the 10th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, from July 3rd to 8th.

Hundreds of young engineers representing 25 nations and 25 universities are gathering to meet industry professionals. Such key players as Oceanco, Ferretti, Sanlorenzo, Lürssen, Monaco Marine and Palumbo SY Refit take part.

Hardly a quarter goes by when The Yacht Club de Monaco is not able to find an opportunity to continue radiating the message to protect the environment. On September 24th and 25th, YCM is hosting the 3rd Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous . The specific aim of the event is to present innovative solutions for the development of virtuous marinas.

The YCM plays a powerful role as an ambassador carrying its values high through its high profile record-breaking international exploits of icons such as Malizia-Seaexplorer of Team Malizia , founded by Pierre Casiraghi, vice-president of the Yacht Club of Monaco. Having just finished The Ocean Race, the IMOCA will stop in Monaco on July 5th.

Tuiga , the flagship of the YCM, another ambassador is fresh from a campaign and will play its role in the next Monaco Classic Week-La Belle Classe , from September 13th to 16th.

Thirty new members were able to enjoy this summer members’ cocktail. They can now join in and encourage distinguished athletes like Alexander Ehlen, seeking to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Monaco Yacht Club showcases yachting of tomorrow

Yacht-Club-Monaco-mesi_BD

The Yacht Club de Monaco hosted the 2nd Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous, supported by the Prince Albert II Foundation, along with major partners such as UBS, Sindalah, the MB92 Group shipyard and Wider Yachts.

The aim of the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous is to promote sustainable solutions and new technologies for the yachting industry, particularly for yachts over 24m.

“All stakeholders in our sector need to be driving technological progress if we are to make the maritime world more sustainable,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Monaco Yacht Club.  “It has to be a collective effort.”

Yacht Club de Monaco awards exploration and innovation prizes.

The aim of the networking event, which follows on from the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous (22-23 September 2024), is to further the energy transition and foster responsible solutions within the yachting industry.

“Navigating a course to a sustainable horizon in the yachting industry is not just about wind and sails, but also innovation and collective commitment,” said José Marco Casellini, Managing Director of Monaco Marina Management.

Innovations examined by an international jury

“From concept to dismantling every decision directs us towards a future where conscience meets excellence. We must harness the air of change and lead our industry towards an ocean of ethical and responsible actions.”

The innovations were presented to the international jury members, around twenty industry professionals and investors, through 149 remote interviews.

Participants were able to share their expertise and ‘draw the blueprint’ for the Smart Yacht of tomorrow during specific workshops.

“We need startups, we need ideas, we need the young generation to change the mistakes of the past,”  said explorer Mike Horn .

Very interested in the exhibition area, the explorer visited the different solutions on display, including Beyond the Sea by yachtsman Yves Parlier, and Coreod Space, a French start-up that was presenting its AI-powered virtual reality headset.

Winners of the Smart Innovative Yacht Awards 2024

The international jury, made up of around twenty yachting professionals and investors, presented two Smart Innovative Yacht Awards this year. Start-up company Composite-Recycling and the Greenboats scale-up received awards.

Guillaume Perben, co-founder and Managing Director of Composite-Recycling.  “We recycle composite materials used to build boats and wind turbines and enable them to become new boats in a way that closes the loop of the constituent materials.   We are very pleased to have won this award for the work we’re doing on recycling boats, helping make boating sustainable and something that no longer harms the environment.”

Loris Schimanski, Business Developer at Greenboats: “ We are delighted to have won this award and been recognised by these industry giants. Over the last few years, we’ve been working flat-out on R&D to try and develop fibres that can compete with glass fibres and, even better, be lighter. It’s a solution based on panels that can be more easily assembled in the big shipyards to reduce the carbon footprint.”
