The Time of Year to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean:

The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.

As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. There are amazing sailing grounds stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the west, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands, finishing with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.

Caribbean Yachting Hot Spots:

Here is a brief list of some of the Caribbean hot spots to consider experiencing when you rent a luxury crewed charter yacht. This is by no means an extensive list and there is more information on things to see and do in the Caribbean under each Caribbean private yacht location. Also, when you hire a yacht with us we will supply you with a customised hand written itinerary suggestion so that you and your crew have a few ideas to choose from on your charter.

Sailing Around Windward and Leeward Islands of the Caribbean

The  Caribbean covers a huge region of widely spread islands 2,000 miles (3,218 km) long.

The larger ones have become sovereign countries with broad range of amenities for sailors, while the smaller ones still preserve its untouched rural charm and tranquility.

From the western tip of Cuba to the Leewards in the east, then south to the top of South America and along Venezuela’s north coast – this chain of islands has created a hook-like shape around the Caribbean Sea. Location like this is always an enticing bait for sailing - perfect climate and  array of diverse cultures, customs, cuisines and experiences, water sports and an unlimited number of other attractions.

Planning sailing vacations in Caribbean, you may wish to consider these groupings of the islands as points of your itinerary, as they contain many popular cruising areas and harbor stops. There is no doubt that in the scope of Caribbean bareboat or skippered yacht charters  both groups have their charms and countless reasons to explore, which definitely makes it a great sailing destination.

Caribbean yacht rentals

12 Knots offers eleven yacht charter bases in the Caribbean region, each with unique individual character, providing sailing experience for everyone, from a novice to an experienced sailor. This region comprises more than 700 hundred islands and islets, so you can choose Caribbean sailing vacations with shot and easy hops or more challenging passages.

Taking Caribbean sailing vacations, you will find warm and steady trade winds in picturesque surroundings; discover plenty of great bars and authentic cuisine!

It’s up to you, choosing between the Leeward Caribbean islands with short and easy hops with line-of-sight sailing and the Windward with more challenging open water passages. Wherever you go, you will return home relaxed, refreshed and ready to start planning your next Caribbean sailing adventure.

The Windward islands

Windward Islands located at the southern end of the Caribbean island chain and stretch for over 300 miles to the south-eastern end of the Caribbean Sea. The Windward Islands are simply called so due to their position as they are exposed to the northeast trade winds. For experienced sailors, it can be right choice to sail among the four main islands: Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada. They lay far apart each other allowing open ocean sailing and while steady easterly trade winds, make passages north or south easy. With constant 12 to 25 knots wind, Caribbean sailing is among best in the world. Night anchorages in peaceful and protected areas give sailors freedom to explore and soak up British and French island culture. The islands of St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada  were British colonies until they gained independence during the 1970s. Martinique is still an overseas department of France.

The climate of the Windward Islands is definitely a marine one.

When tropical heat reaches its peak, steady trade winds and daily sea breezes come to rescue.

Typically, dry and wet seasons go hand in hand here. Although the priority of more rainfalls is given to the eastern side of the islands mainly due to the prevailing north-east trade winds there.

The islands east of Puerto Rico were called “Windward Islands” by the Spanish, while the islands south of Puerto Rico were named as “Leewards “. And Dominica positions itself right on the border line between the Windward and the Leeward Islands.

Long time ago some of the islands used to be French colonies, subsequently gained its name as The French Antilles.

The population of the Windward Islands is mostly of African origin, with some exceptions of Chinese and Caucasians. The present day Windward Islands will welcome tourists with upscale resorts, stunning beaches and pleasant sunny weather.

After cruising through the Windward Islands, you may wish to set sails to the Leeward Islands.

The Leeward islands

The Leeward islands are located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea and form the northeastern boundary between Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean, extending from Puerto Rico to the Windward Islands, forming part of the Lesser Antilles chain.

Although 700 miles long stretch of these magnificent isles mostly constitute the whole body of the Leewards, it provides the abundance of enjoyment: quaint fishing spots, ancient ruins and delicious authentic cuisine.

Blessed with balmy temperatures all around the year, The Leeward Islands are called leeward because they're away from the wind or downwind (in the "lee"). Leeward group of Caribbean islands includes: the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint-Barthelemy, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antiqua, Redonda, Montserrat and Guadeloupe.

One of two "sister islands", St Kitts and Nevis, provides a brilliant Caribbean experience, from their picture-perfect beaches and volcanic mountains to friendly locals and layers of history to explore. For the water sport lovers, there are numerous aquatic activities that include fishing, diving, windsurfing and surfing.

St.Kitts and Nevis

Switch from sailing to inland for a change and St.Kitts and Nevis will deliver the most exceptional hiking in the Caribbean. The dormant volcano of Mount Liamuiga is considered to be the toughest to climb. And with the experienced guide you may even try to descend in its crater!

The unspoiled landscape of dry littoral forest and rainforest will present memorable show of fauna and flora. Many plants are of culinary and medical use, and some even used in black magic, as informative guides would point out its botanical value.

The wild life-lovers will not be disappointed with variety of different types of exotic animals.

Actually, the Great Salt Pond has become famous for its largest habitat of green velvet monkeys.

St. Kitts and Nevis will keep you captivated with majestic view of huge conical shells, remains of old sugar mills, along with some other plantation ruins, built in the 18 th century.

Back to water activities, and tourists will be pleased with what these two island can offer: deep-water fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving and more.

Then in order to satisfy your growing appetite visit two popular restaurants: Carambola and the Shipwreck Bar and Grill to enjoy its delicious local meals.

A yacht charter in the Caribbean Leeward Islands offers sailors an unrivalled remarkable experience. Enjoy tropical landscapes, pristine palm-lined beaches and azure waters — all the joys of marine life.

Sailing over the Leeward Islands may have all the pleasures to offer: the Tropical rainforests, glittering coral reefs, and luxury sand beaches. That’s probably why most of the known tourist resorts on these islands play a critical role in their economy, as do banking and fishing. Many of them also rely on their status as a tax haven to promote offshore financial services as a source of government revenue. But there is much more to discover in the Leeward Islands. These Caribbean islands provide great variety of yachts for charter and pleasant sailing vacations. Most of the Leeward Islands are located close to each other with moderate winds from 10 to 15 knots and rather low wavers. BVI is the most popular area for Caribbean charters either bareboat or luxury crewed vacations. This is the right place for the novice sailor’s easy passages in line-of-sight sailing.

The climate of the Caribbean Leeward Islands can be described as tropical, but much drier than in Windward Islands. Though the climate does vary from island to island and can even be different in different parts of the same island. Rainfall increases with elevation and in more southerly latitudes. In some cases trade winds look like refreshing tonic to the tropical heat. There is minor seasonal variation, although the second half of the year, the wet season, is slightly warmer and rainier. The best time for sailing in the Caribbean may be the first half of the year. At this time the temperatures usually range between 81°F (27°C) and 95°F(35°C). Annual rainfall averages about 40 to 50 inches (1016 to 1270 mm). Keep in mind, that nearly every island had been severely damaged by hurricane activity in its recent history.

English is the most widespread language all around the islands, plus many of the people speak French and Dutch on the St Martin Island. Both English-based and French-based Creole are also spoken. The prevailing currency is The East Caribbean dollar. But St Martin is odd man out again, circulating the Netherlands Antilles guilder in the Dutch area and the Euro in the French region. Nevertheless, the US dollar is widely accepted throughout the islands.

If you eager to take part in sporting activities, then you may be pleased to know that cricket is widely played and followed in the former British territories. Besides, as in the rest of the Caribbean, music is also always a big part of local life. Enjoy the magical sounds of calypso, soca, steelpan, reggae, salsa and jazz — all of the mentioned has their adherents.

During your Caribbean yacht charter, you may wish to participate in some major holiday celebrations, including the St Kitts Christmas, New Year carnaval, the annual music festival, as well as Anguilla’s Emancipation Day and Culturama festival on August 1st.

The culture of the Leeward Islands is varied by different influences, including French, Dutch and West Indian. Due to that sailing around the Leeward Islands provides a wonderful choice of cuisine and some great restaurants to satisfy your affection for the finest dishes. By the way, the island of Anguilla offers true gastronomic feasts. When sailing in the Caribbean Leeward Islands, be sure to try freshly caught lobsters with a glass of wine.

Sailing the Caribbean With 12 Knots

So, while planning a Caribbean charter it is highly recommended to decide on how many islands you would like to visit in a given time frame. Research Caribbean boat rentals and determine which island you would like to have as a starting base. Then you can plan an itinerary for the week or ten days, taking into consideration distances between the islands and activities you would like to have, like island tracking, scuba diving, snorkeling, volcano hiking, or even shopping.

12 Knots team will give you plenty of useful information not only on the bareboat charter in Caribbean, but also itineraries, places of interest and peculiarities of each island.

Taking a yacht charter in the Caribbean is just a perfect combination of sailing and relaxation, authentic culture and a range of water sport activities. In a few words, this area may always offer something for everyone in these amazing islands’ surrounding.

Caribbean Yachting Season

The Caribbean high season for yacht charters runs from mid-December to early May, with Christmas and New Year’s the most popular and busiest times of the year. But due to the islands’ locations near the equator, temperatures remain ideal throughout the year, making off-season charters just as enjoyable.

Keep in mind, however, that there is an increased chance for storms and hurricanes during the summer season, mainly from mid-August to mid-November. Most charter yachts leave the area during that time.

A girl snorkeling in the BVI

Are you ready to explore all that the Caribbean has to offer? There are three main island areas in the Caribbean, all fantastic destinations for Caribbean charter yacht vacations.

The Grenadines

The Grenadines are untouched by mass tourism and industry, and they are the perfect charter destination if you are looking for solitude and you enjoy exploring remote areas. A great combination of lush rain forests and sandy beaches awaits!

This is a great summer charter destination because the islands aren’t usually affected by hurricanes.

The Leeward Islands

Leeward Islands yacht rentals offer the perfect combination of luxury and solitude. You can visit the glitzy islands of St. Maarten and St. Barts one day and get lost in the remoteness and tranquility of Anguilla the next day.

These islands are rich in history and offer great restaurants, upscale resorts, and trendy harbors.

The Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are the perfect location for first-time charterers and families because of their calm waters, protected natural anchorages, and short distances between the islands.

The BVI are a great destination for a catamaran or sailing yacht charter. Caribbean locations here have constant yet mild trade winds year round, and the area offers fantastic diving and snorkeling.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean?

Weekly rates for Caribbean boat charters are dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the season, and your destination. Motor yachts, for example, typically range from $15,000 (yachts up to 80 feet) to $150,000 or more (yachts over 150 feet) per week.

During the Caribbean high season (Christmas, New Year’s, and January/February), yacht charter Caribbean prices tend to increase slightly. Areas with large charter fleets, like St. Martin, tend to have more competitive pricing than areas with smaller fleets.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Catamaran in the Caribbean?

Most catamarans offer all-inclusive rates, which start at $10,000 for catamarans under 50 feet and run up to $50,000 or more for catamarans of 80 feet or more. The Caribbean is an ideal destination for a catamaran charter, and across the region, you’ll find a variety of sailing and power cats available for charter.

Ultimately, the cost of a catamaran charter is dependent on the time you visit, where you go, local taxes, and the number of ports you visit. A luxury yacht charter in the Caribbean’s high season (New Year’s or Christmas) will cost significantly more than a catamaran charter in summer.

Can I Rent a Yacht for a Day?

Rates for yacht rentals are usually weekly, but when you talk to a Caribbean yacht charter broker at Worldwide Boat, we can look at your budget, plans, and interests to help you get the best experience possible.

Caribbean Yachting Hotspots

Caribbean sailing charters give you access to white-sand beaches and laid-back island vibes, but they can also offer action-packed itineraries. From island-hopping and hiking to snorkeling and cliff-jumping, adventure awaits on a Caribbean yacht charter!

Some of the region’s must-see destinations include:

  • St. Martin : Known for its upscale eateries and amazing cuisine, as well as high-end spas, shopping and casinos, St. Martin is the yachting capital of the Caribbean. This island is part French and part Dutch, and it’s close to islands like St. Barts and Anguilla, making it a favorite jumping-off point for island-hopping adventures.
  • St. Barts : St. Barts (sometimes called St. Barths) beckons A-listers to its posh beach clubs, fashionable shops, and five-star eateries. Visitors will find a collection of truly spectacular powdery beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, and excellent shoreside amenities, all within cruising distance of St. Martin.
  • Antigua : Antigua epitomizes the relaxation and bliss of the Caribbean. Known for its 365 beaches (one for every day of the year), the tiny island is a sailor’s dream, offering warm waters, steady winds, safe anchorages, and a lively regatta calendar.
  • Grenada : Grenada is revered for its beautiful beaches, abundant marine wildlife, and vibrant cuisine (spiced with local nutmeg, mace, and allspice). Spend a day relaxing on Grand Anse Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the best in the world. Island-hop to neighboring isles like Petite Martinique, or spend a day snorkeling one of Grenada’s famous reefs.
  • Anguilla : Anguilla is one of the most tranquil Leeward islands. Escape to Dream Bay or one of the numerous nearby coral cays for some supreme R&R. A diving and snorkeling mecca, Anguilla is home to some of the Caribbean’s best shipwreck dives. Plus, the island boasts a calendar of must-see festivals and events, including a jazz festival in November and Carnival in August.

Why Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean?

The best Caribbean yacht charters offer a bit of everything: Relaxation, sun-soaked beaches, delicious culinary treats, refreshing rum-infused cocktails, and calm waters for cruising. Here are some highlights:

The Inescapable Beauty of White-Sand Beaches

Caribbean beaches have almost a mythical quality to them. It’s no wonder explorers were once willing to board wooden ships and travel thousands of miles just to see them in person.

Every island offers a selection of untouched and charming beaches for you to explore. From one-of-a-kind places like “Pig Beach” in the Bahamas to the cosmopolitan Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg, St. Martin, the beaches across the Caribbean offer legendary sights and attractions.

Colorful Celebrations and Friendly Faces

The Caribbean is known for its parades, bars, nightclubs, and parties, not to mention world-famous cocktails. When you want to step off of your luxury yacht charter, Caribbean shores and islands offer a world of fun to immerse yourself in.

A few must-see events include the St. Barth’s Bucket (if you’re into superyacht racing), the annual Carnival celebration, and the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival .

Amazing Wildlife and Adventure

If snorkeling in vibrant and colorful coral reefs, diving into underwater museums, or parasailing over clear waters are some of the items on your bucket list, you can certainly get it all done during your visit to the Caribbean.

You’ll find a variety of unique adventures, from the underwater sculpture park of the Grenadines to the natural seaside baths in Virgin Gorda and hiking the Pitons in St. Lucia. The Caribbean gives you to plenty of chances to get outside and enjoy yourself.

Nonstop Relaxation

Because the area is so close to the equator, the Caribbean offers warm weather to lounge in all year round. Feel pampered aboard a luxury crewed rental yacht, and then feel calm while sinking your toes into soft, powdery white sand. Enjoy the spas, rum cocktails, and quiet, isolated beaches: Charter guests can experience supreme relaxation in the Caribbean.

Charter a yacht in the BVI's

The British Virgin Islands include Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, and more. There’s no better way to experience the waters and beaches of the BVI's than on a private Caribbean charter with a full crew to pamper you. Of all the islands in the Caribbean, the Virgins are furthest north. This makes them very convenient due to the proximity to San Juan and due to their direct flights from the United States. Catamaran sailing vacations and crewed sailing charters are very popular in the islands, and their protected waters make them a favorite spot for guests that are taking their first private Caribbean yacht charter. To learn more about them:

Charter a yacht in the USVI

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist mainly of the three large islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. With lovely bays, long beaches, lush nature preserves, fabulous diving spots, and excellent, onshore evening entertainment, many choose to vacation in the USVI’s. Caribbean charters often visit both the BVI’s and USVI’s during the same week, as they are close to one another and the waters are generally calmer than in other parts of the Caribbean. They in general are also home to the largest fleet of crewed, all-inclusive, luxury catamarans. To find out more about them:

Charter a Caribbean yacht

The Leewards are situated in the middle of the Caribbean Island chain. The major airports are located on St. Maarten and Antigua. Due to the English, Dutch, and French influences everywhere you look, they exhibit the best example of cultural sophistication anywhere within the Caribbean. If you are looking to see where the rich and famous go on vacation, you will want to visit the island of St. Barts; for many this is a must stop for a Caribbean yacht charter. Many mega yachts are available for rental in St. Maarten, as it has become a popular mega yacht Caribbean base for the winter. To learn more about the Leewards:

Grenadines

The Grenadines are also called The Windward Islands. Oftentimes our guests will choose a sailing charter over a motor yacht when in the Grenadines, due to the more constant tropical breezes that occur. The islands are much less developed than the rest of the Caribbean, and the inhabitants live on their own time schedule, which enhances the feeling of getting away. The northern most island accessible by air is ST. Vincent, while the southern tip’s major airport is on Grenada. There are fewer Caribbean charter yachts based here; however, occasionally some charter yachts are happy to relocate in order to offer a vacation that happens a little off the beaten path. To find out more about the Grenadines:

Caribbean Charters - When To Go.

One of the lovely things about the Caribbean is that the temperatures remain consistent throughout the year; however, there are some other weather considerations that you will want to factor in when making your caribbean yachting vacation plans. Read More....

Vacations here are most popular between November and July.

If you are thinking of a megayacht, you will want to keep in mind that many of these private yachts which are Caribbean based in winter leave in the late spring and early summer months. They will return again in early winter; however, this does limit their availability. To charter a mega yacht, you will want to make sure that you do so well in advance.

Motor, sail, or catamaran yachts, on the other hand, often have selections available year round. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter do need to be planned for as early as possible as these are very popular charter times.

The availability for Caribbean charters can also be affected by the weather in other climates, for instance, when the severity of the weather is bad in the United States or Europe, especially between January and February, the charters are often booked. This is due to many clients looking for a break from the cold.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

The best bet for island hopping in the Caribbean is going among the territories of the American, British and Spanish Virgin Islands, which are sometimes just a few miles away from each other, and even sometimes visible from another. The close to each other “Windward Islands” at the very eastern part of the Caribbean, which are mostly governed by the supranational federation of states called the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, all of which use the same currency), are also known worldwide for their magnificent sailing possibilities.

Fat fish and fast boats create happiness under, in, and on the water

In these waters, time is spent most felicitously when fishing, diving, swimming or surfing. The water in the Caribbean simultaneously provides nourishment, interest, sports and activities, and a comfortable cooling element when the heat gets to be too much. There are, for example, promising coastal areas and coral reefs off of the island Tobago, whose waters are so filled with life due to the warm Gulfstream and cool Atlantic current create the perfect conditions for the large fish varieties tarpon, bonefish, barracuda, marlin, mackerel, tuna, and swordfish. Los Roques, a 40-island and 200-sandbank Venezuelan archipelago north of Caracas, is home not only those fish varieties, but also duck fish, trumpet fish, crayfish, and sea urchins. However, the entire Caribbean Sea’s wealth of big fish such as sharks, marlin, sailfish, swordfish and tuna makes it a unique place for “Big Game Fishing”. An especially popular method of fishing is “chunking” or “chumming”, in which live bait, such as mackerel, is used to attract larger fish species. Guided deep-sea fishing charters with motorboats are offered from almost any island, but the Bahamas (Find a sailing route suggestion for Bahams here), Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic are particularly known for this activity. Divers have an equally large underwater playground with the Caribbean under their fins. In the Lesser Antilles and the so-called “special community” of the Netherlands, the waters around the 290 square kilometer island Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela, have been known as a diving Mecca par excellence since the 1970s. The local Bonaire Marine Park has been a nature reserve since 1997, and its clear waters and healthy reefs attract 50,000 divers per year to the dive sites Angel City, 1000 Steps, and the Wreck of the Hilma Hooker. Also recommended for underwater excursions are the islands Grenada - Sailing route suggestion for Grenada , Sint Maarten, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Aruba, Curaçao, the Cuban Isla de la Juventud and Cayo Largo, and the Samaná Peninsula on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.

Yacht charters in the Caribbean

Stretching across the Caribbean Sea between the southernmost tip of Florida and the Venezuelan coast, the Caribbean Islands are a massive, beautiful, and must-see archipelago. Each island boasts a unique character but there are some similarities, too, not least unspoiled shores, a friendly vibe, and a leisurely pace. It’s a destination that’s well suited to yacht vacations, so read on to discover what you need to know about these sleek on-the-water vacation home rentals, along with the best places to turn off the motor and head onshore for a while.

A quick guide to Caribbean yacht charters

Outdoor living space on a luxury yacht in the Caribbean

Before heading off to the far-flung shores of the Caribbean, a quick brush up on the basics will help ensure your yacht trip planning goes as smoothly as the sailing.

Do Caribbean yacht charters come with a crew?

In most cases, yes. The cost to rent a yacht in the Caribbean usually includes a captain, though, for an additional fee, you can also opt to have a chef and, often, other crew on board, too. If you’ve got your own captain’s credentials, typically in the form of an American Sailing Association qualification, you’ll be able to go it alone.

What are private yacht charters in the Caribbean like?

The word private says it all really. Yachts for rent in the Caribbean may vary in size and style, though all offer a stay that’s as secluded as you want it to be. The plentiful space onboard typically makes room for plush living areas and en suite cabins, not to mention feature-packed kitchens and sunny outdoor decks with hot tubs.

Cost of private yacht charters in the Caribbean

How much you’ll pay for an idyllic escape on the water depends on whether you choose a smaller affordable yacht rental or a more luxurious number, as well as how many crew members you choose to have onboard. You’ll also need to consider whether an “all-inclusive” or “plus expenses” approach to meals, drinks, and other costs suits your group best.

When’s the best time to enjoy Caribbean yacht charters?

That’s usually determined by whether you want to enjoy the best of the weather or the most affordable yacht rentals. If it’s the former, you should probably set sail between December and April. But, if it’s the latter, a yacht charter in either May or June or between late November and mid-December would likely prove a good bet.

Best destinations for Caribbean yacht charters

A luxury motor yacht offering sailing adventures in the British and U.S. Virgin Islands

The beauty of enjoying a yacht vacation in the Caribbean is that you don’t have to limit yourself to exploring just one island. This is a landscape that’s meant for island hopping, but that’s not to say there aren’t a few must-visit spots.

Festival vibes in the Bahamas

The Bahamas’ proximity to the Florida Keys makes it a popular and affordable choice for yacht charters from the Sunshine State. Head for the pink-sand beaches of Harbour Island or set sail for Exuma to share turquoise waters with the Caribbean’s famous swimming pigs. Then come the jubilant Bahamian festivals. For foodies, that might mean a jaunt onshore for May’s Eleuthera Pineapple Festival or June’s All Andros Crab Fest. Culture vultures, on the other hand, can soak up the vibes of spring’s Junkanoo Carnival.

Island hopping in the British Virgin Islands

It’s not unusual to hear the British Virgin Islands described as the sailing capital of the world. The allure of this particular island paradise often comes courtesy of endless sunny days and consistent winds, though the short sail times between the islands means you can pack in some serious sightseeing, even if you only rent a yacht for a few days. A crewed yacht sailing from Wickham’s Key offers the chance to explore both the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, ticking off bucket-list sights like the Virgin Gorda Baths along the way.

Intoxicating culture in Cuba

One of the Caribbean’s most unique sailing destinations is served up by Cuba, its warm waters ideal for both diving and snorkeling, and its intoxicating cities, each packed with stunning architecture, classic American cars, and old-time charm, offering plenty of reasons to head onshore for a while. Never is this truer than in Old Havana, this UNESCO-tagged World Heritage Site a medley of quaint, cobbled squares, charming plazas, oversized cigars, and unique things to do.

Summer Daydream: Rent a yacht in the Caribbean for a week

yachts for rent in the caribbean

Table of Contents

Have you dreamed about renting a yacht for a week in the Caribbean? Can you see yourself relaxing on the boat’s deck , soaking up the sun while the brilliant turquoise water shimmers below? Well, cross a Caribbean yacht charter off your bucket list, because you can easily turn this dream into reality.

Check out this guide to help you rent a yacht in the Caribbean for a week.

Choose your yacht charter destination.

The Caribbean is chock full of enticing charter locales, each with its own distinctive appeal. From west to east along the chain, you’ll first reach Puerto Rico , featuring a mix of marina facilities and off-the-beaten-path beaches. Next, you’ll find the United States and British Virgin Islands, offering simple line -of-sight navigation between islands, beautiful anchorages, and plenty of snorkeling and diving spots.

More scenic islands are sprinkled throughout the Caribbean Sea, with Trinidad and Tobago the southernmost destinations. For photo-worthy anchorages in protected waters, consider Antigua and Barbuda, located near the easternmost point of the Caribbean island chain.

Select Your Ideal Caribbean Charter Yacht

With warm trade winds and varied sailing conditions, the Caribbean is an ideal destination for both novice and experienced sailors. To cruise these crystal-clear waters, you’ll find a good assortment of monohull (single-hulled) sailboats, featuring comfortable accommodations and good sailing abilities. Many catamaran (dual-hulled) sailboats are also available, offering spacious quarters and minimum drafts that allow them to explore shallow coves unreachable by deeper-draft sailboats.

Surprisingly, you can also hop aboard a powerboat during your Caribbean charter vacation. Choices include fishing boats, cruisers, and motor yachts – truly a boat for every taste and budget. When chartering most vessels, you can hire a licensed captain or go the “bareboat” route and manage the boat yourself.

Promptly Handle Your Passport Requirements

Before addressing other aspects of your trip, obtain your passport. In the United States, the Department of State’s Passport Services Directorate handles all passport applications. Also, remember that many Caribbean countries require tourist visas, some of which must be obtained before you arrive. In other words, do your homework and allow plenty of time for passport and visa processing.

Nail Down Your Onboard Food Arrangements

When you’re renting a yacht for a week in the Caribbean, you have two workable meal planning options. First, you can prepare your own menu and go food shopping when you arrive. Depending on your charter arrangement, a provisioning package might also be available, meaning that you’ll step aboard a fully stocked vessel. In some cases, you can hire a professional cook to handle the meal prep and cleanup chores.

Pack These “Must Have” Charter Vacation Items

While you’re renting a yacht for a week in the Caribbean, you’ll be boating in mostly sunny weather with a nice breeze. Depending on your location and season, temperatures range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. So, pack minimal swimsuits, shorts and T-shirts, plus a nice outfit for dinner ashore . Throw in a set of lightweight foul weather gear and flip-flops, and you’re probably set for the week.

Beyond clothing, pack a compact camera and portable music device. Tuck in differently sized Ziploc bags, useful for storing wet swimsuits, shells, and treasures. Because you’ll likely take some ocean baths, bring a biodegradable shampoo and body gel designed for salt-water use, plus a bath puff. A drawstring mesh bag will help to keep your bath supplies handy. Finally, leave your hard luggage at home, and pack everything in a soft duffel bag.

Boat Selection: Renting a Yacht for a Week in the Caribbean

To choose a nicely equipped boat for your Caribbean yacht charter, check into Boatsetter , the leading boat-sharing company that makes it easy for boaters to connect with local boat owners.

Yes, Boatsetter even lists privately owned sailboats and powerboats in prime charter spots such as the United States and British Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and Puerto Rico . If you’d like a licensed Coast Guard captain to handle the boat while you relax, you can arrange that. So grab your calendar, choose a gorgeous Caribbean destination, and book that Boatsetter boat right now!

Yacht Charter in the Caribbean

Discover a little piece of paradise with a yacht charter in the Caribbean . The dreamy white sandy beaches surrounded by turquoise waters and palm trees will make you feel like you have arrived in a Windows screen saver. You can take the days to relax in the sun and wake up to a beautiful sunrise or explore what the lively cities of the Caribbean have to offer. Amazing food and a bustling nightlife await you here.

Charter a yacht in the Caribbean with a skipper

Renting a boat in the Caribbean with a skipper is your key to unlocking a seamless, stress-free maritime journey. The Caribbean, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, lush landscapes, and vibrant cultures, beckons explorers to its enchanting shores. With a skipper at the helm, you can navigate the Caribbean's idyllic waters effortlessly while delving into the region's hidden gems. Whether you're an experienced sailor or a novice looking to relax and relish every moment, a skipper ensures a smooth voyage, allowing you to unwind, explore, and create lasting memories. Revel in the delights of the Caribbean, from snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs to indulging in local cuisine and savoring the tranquility of secluded beaches. Your Caribbean adventure with a skipper promises to be a remarkable journey filled with comfort, relaxation, and exploration.

Sailing Conditions in the Caribbean

The Caribbean covers a wide range of topographically diverse islands so it is worth noting that the islands offer slightly differing climates. Conditions vary along this long island chain, from the calmer waters around the BVI to more energetic conditions in the south along the Windward Islands trail.

The Easterly Trade wind is the most prominent and consistent wind in the Caribbean and is strongest in December and January. In general, you can expect average winds of 10 to 25 knots. However, consistent currents and trade winds around the British Virgin Islands, for example, are calmer, and usually well below 20 knots. From June to November, the trade wind is often less predictable and stable, making the winter months the best time to opt for a yacht charter in the Caribbean . The months between December and May are also the driest months in the Caribbean. The perfect winter escape destination!

On average, the Caribbean is blessed with ideal temperatures in the mid to upper 20’s. On some islands, like Martinique, expect air temperatures to be in the mid 30s. The sea temperatures are equally warm and with wave heights usually well under a meter, the Caribbean is a true paradise for a relaxed boat holiday.

Check individual destinations for information on the best times and any physical obstacles to be aware of while navigating these gorgeous sailing waters. Generally speaking, early morning sailing in the early part of the year will make for the calmest conditions. Remember, you can also book a skippered sailing holiday in the Caribbean with Zizoo for the most relaxing holiday experience.

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?

Selecting the optimal time for a yacht charter in the Caribbean hinges on your preference for experiences and weather. The Caribbean is a year-round haven, but each season has its unique charm.

High Season (December to April): This period is renowned for its ideal weather conditions, with cooler temperatures and gentle trade winds. It's the prime time for sailing, sun-soaked beaches, and lively festivals. However, it's also the busiest season, so booking well in advance is recommended.

Shoulder Season (May to June and November): These transitional months offer a sweet spot between the high and low seasons. You can still enjoy pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Prices may also be more budget-friendly.

Low Season (July to October): The Caribbean's low season is characterized by warmer temperatures and the possibility of tropical storms and hurricanes. You should probably avoid the Caribbean during this time of year - after all, there are no boat rentals available during this time of year anyway.

Ultimately, the best time for your Caribbean yacht charter depends on your preferences, but with its year-round appeal, the Caribbean ensures unforgettable experiences whenever you choose to set sail.

Who should rent a yacht in the Caribbean?

Whether you're a budding sailor or a seasoned mariner, the Caribbean's azure waters, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cultures offer an array of experiences tailored to your expertise.

For Novice Sailors: If you're new to sailing, consider destinations like the British Virgin Islands. Its calm, protected waters, and straightforward navigation make it an ideal training ground. The Exumas in the Bahamas offer shallow waters, line-of-sight navigation, and consistent trade winds, providing a comfortable setting for learners. For a more relaxed experience, Antigua's well-marked coastline beckons.

For Advanced Sailors: Those with sailing proficiency can explore more challenging regions. The Grenadines offer exciting winds, and the Grenada to St. Vincent passage offers excellent offshore practice. The Bahamas' Abacos, with their sheltered anchorages, provide a diverse island hopping route. In Martinique, you'll find a perfect blend of trade winds and more spirited sailing opportunities.

For Pro Sailors: If you're a pro sailor, the Caribbean presents limitless opportunities for thrilling experiences. The Bahamas' Nassau and Exumas offer challenges in open water passages. St. Martin and St. Barths bring stronger trade winds for exhilarating sailing. In St. Lucia, you can embrace the thrill of offshore cruising with the Atlantic winds at your back.

What you need to know about a catamaran charter in the Caribbean

Pros of a Caribbean catamaran charter

Charter a catamaran in the Caribbean if you want to explore all the magical beaches this region of the world has to offer. Whether you just want to stay north in the Bahamas or the British Virgin Islands or sail further south to Martinique or Trinidad and Tobago, there is something for everyone. Catamarans have a shallow draft, making them the ideal water vehicles for these kinds of undertakings.

A catamaran rental in the Caribbean is perfect for anyone who enjoys the flexibility of these wonderful water vehicles. They have both a sail and an engine, allowing you to sail with the wind when it’s strong enough to move the boat forward, but also giving you the option to use the engine when the wind is either not strong enough or not present at all. That way you won’t ever get stuck in the middle of the sea.

Rent a catamaran in the Caribbean if you enjoy a certain level of comfort. Catamarans are often bigger than other types of boats, which also allows for bigger rooms. That way you won’t necessarily feel like sleeping in a tiny cabin on board a boat, but rather like sleeping in a small, but comfortable hotel room.

Cons of a Caribbean catamaran charter

One of the downsides of a catamaran charter in the Caribbean is that catamarans are relatively big in size. This can pose some challenges when trying to find a spot for mooring at the marinas. Keep in mind that securing a spot for mooring also means that you will most likely pay extra for the extra space you’re taking up.

Another downside of a catamaran hire in the Caribbean is the fact that catamarans are often a lot lighter than other kinds of boats. This can have an effect on their speed. So if you are planning on sailing long distances in one go, a catamaran might not be the best choice for you.

Cons of renting a sailboat in the Caribbean

One of the downsides of a sailboat hire in the Caribbean can be the fact that sailboats have a keel. You won’t be able to sail too close to the coast, which might mean that you won’t be able to discover all the beautiful beaches from up close. It could even be quite dangerous to do so.

This allows you to explore the region extensively and discover various islands, all while enjoying a more cost-effective option. However, if you're seeking shorter adventures, you can opt for daily boat rentals, perfect for day trips and island-hopping escapades. These are particularly suitable for smaller vessels like speedboats and RIBs, which may lack overnight amenities, offering an opportunity for spontaneous exploration. Your boat rental duration can be tailored to your ideal Caribbean experience , be it a week-long odyssey or a shorter, action-packed adventure.

Others may prefer to discover new destinations and practice sailing in different conditions. Choose from a relaxed retreat on a luxury yacht or an island-hopping adventure with friends. For those looking for the best nightlife, check out our list of the best party islands in the Caribbean.

A boat rental in the British Virgin Islands is popular with beginner sailors because of the ideal steady currents and wind speed. More experienced seafarers may enjoy sailing the Windward Islands. These take you from Martinique to Saint Lucia and on to Saint Vincent and Grenada.

Either way, choosing one base as a starting point is a good idea, and it allows you to begin planning how to fit in scuba diving and beach time between seeing all the varied sights on your trip. Major marinas that also offer anchorages include Fort-de-France on Martinique and Rodney Bay on St Lucia . Many land-dwelling travelers visit the Caribbean to relax at its pristine beaches, and boat rental gives you the opportunity to see many more of them than the average visitor.

One of the most popular sailing routes in the BVI begins in Tortola and takes you to some of the Caribbean’s best beaches and incredible natural reserves.

What Caribbean yacht charter prices can you expect?

Caribbean yacht charter prices fluctuate greatly depending on a number of different factors, including the size, model, and capacity of the boat, the season when you plan to travel, the duration of your charter, whether or not you plan to travel with a skipper, and the part of the Caribbean you want to visit.  Yacht rentals in the Caribbean usually come with a captain, and the most luxurious vessels even come with a crew.

In general, daily Caribbean yacht charters can cost anywhere from around $1475 in low season, or $2283 in high season.  If you want to rent a yacht for a week in the Caribbean, prices will start at around $10, 325.  Generally speaking, Curacao is one of the cheaper areas for yacht hire in the Caribbean, while the price of yacht charters in Puerto Rico will be considerably higher.

Is it possible to rent a yacht in the Caribbean with or without a skipper?

Yes, it is possible to hire a yacht in the Caribbean either with or without a skipper. However, to book a bareboat charter, you must make sure that you have the appropriate boating licence. If in doubt, check with the boat owner before booking the boat to ensure no nasty surprises when you get there.

A skippered luxury yacht charter in the Caribbean is perfect for people who want to relax during their nautical adventure, without having to worry about the technicalities of sailing the boat. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a trip that’s full of adventure and spontaneity, or simply a more private yacht charter in the Caribbean, you should book up a bareboat charter to sail wherever you please, stopping off whenever you want, all in complete privacy.

Sailing Areas in the Caribbean

Most of our yacht rentals in the Caribbean are based in The Bahamas, but we also rent yachts on the islands and areas listed below:

  • Saint Martin
  • British Virgin Islands
  • United States Virgin islands
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Puerto Rico
  • Turks and Caicos
  • Saint Barthélemy
  • Bonaire

What are some of the most popular ports in the Caribbean?

Being an exceptionally popular sailing destination, there are a number of different ports throughout the Caribbean that are perfect for stopping off at with your boat rental.  Here are a list of some of the best:

  • Prince George Wharf, Nassau, the Bahamas
  • Ocho Rios, Jamaica
  • Falmouth, Jamaica
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Philipsburg, St Maarten
  • Gustavia, St Barth
  • Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas
  • Basseterre, St Kitts
  • Fort-de-France, Martinique
  • Cozumel, Mexico

What can I do with a yacht rental in the Caribbean?

A luxury yacht charter in the Caribbean with a skipper allows you to sit back and relax as you sail from one contrasting island to another. You can plan your itinerary based entirely on your tastes, with everything from tranquil, secluded beaches allowing peace of mind to fast-paced water sports offering a true adrenaline rush. Whatever kind of holiday you decide on, you can adapt your Caribbean yacht charter to really make the most out of your trip. The pace and the route are completely up to you.

And on land...

The range of routes to choose from during your Caribbean yacht charter are very impressive! The Virgin Islands, Leeward Islands, Grenadines, St Lucia, St Martin, Antigua and — of course — the Bahamas all offer a varied landscape of pristine natural parks, lush, forested mountain landscapes and bustling marinas serving the world's best seafood. As a veritable yachting playground, you'll want to pick your base in the Caribbean and take it slow. A Caribbean yacht rental to the Lesser Antilles, for instance, may see you sailing from St Lucia to the Grenadines, stopping off at coral reefs, waterfalls and famed shipwrecks. The Bahamas, too, offers plenty of diving opportunities, with Abacos and Exumas containing some of the most beautiful marine parks in the world.  You especially shouldn’t miss the Ocean Atlas statue if you decide going diving or snorkelling here.  It is the world’s biggest underwater statue, so big that it had to be assembled underwater and is easily visible from the surface.

If you’re still struggling for inspiration or fancy reading a bit about itinerary routes and sailing ideas, our blog is full of Caribbean yacht charter itineraries and sailing routes. Guadeloupe, The Windward Islands, the British Virgin Islands, you name it, we’ve got it. They tend to vary from a few days to a fortnight and some have various options, meaning you can tailor the route to suite the amount of time you have planned for your yacht charter.

What weather and sailing conditions can be expected when you rent a yacht in the Caribbean?

The weather conditions in the Caribbean are subject to much seasonal variation.  Although the temperatures remain fairly pleasant all year round, some periods see a significantly higher quantity of rain.  There is even a hurricane season, which runs from June until November, although hurricanes are most likely to occur from August to September.  During this period, the weather will be unpredictable and so it is best to avoid booking a boat within this time.

When is the best time for a yacht rental in the Caribbean?

Christmas and Thanksgiving are both popular times of the year for to go sailing in the Caribbean with family and friends. However, to us, the most preferable time of year is early summer in the months from March to June. The flowers and plants are in bloom, the wildlife is tranquil and content with the pleasant weather conditions and calm winds.  There will also be fewer tourists, meaning you are more likely to find better boat deals.

The only time we would advise against hiring a yacht in the Caribbean is during the hurricane season.  Although there is a possibility that the hurricanes won’t hit the island where you are, there is also a possibility that the weather will be too poor some days to go out on the water.

What are the best harbours and marinas to stop off at during your Caribbean yacht charter?

While there are many great harbours and marinas in the Caribbean, we have compiled a list of our top ten:

  • American Yacht Harbour, St Thomas, USVI
  • Bimini Bay Resorts and Marina, Bimini, the Bahamas
  • Isle de Sol, a small island near Anguilla
  • Jolly Harbour Marina, Antigua and Barbuda
  • Marina Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic
  • Leverick Bay Resort and Marina, Virgin Gorda, BVI
  • Rodney Bay Marina, St Lucia
  • The Yacht Club Palmas de Mar, Puerto Rico
  • Royal Jamaica Yacht Club and Marina, Jamaica
  • Yacht Haven Grande, St Thomas, USVI

This list is just a small taste of the fantastic marinas waiting for you in the Caribbean, but they are some of the best suited to accommodate the needs of all sailors, from novices to those with a little more experience.

How to get to the Caribbean?

You can fly directly to many of the island airports in the Caribbean. Lots of them are international airports and others are smaller local airports. Miami International Airport (MIA) is a large airport with many connections and is also close to the Bahamas if you would rather rent a yacht in Miami and sail over.

Top 7 luxury destinations you should have on your bucket list in 2024.

yachts for rent in the caribbean

Luxury travel expert Stephanie Davis has stayed at the best resorts around the world, and says these are the top seven luxury destinations to book in 2024. 1: Passalacqua , Lake Como, Italy “Passalacqua is my number one destination in the world for too many reasons to count,” Davis said. “I was not surprised when the prestigious World’s 50 Best Hotels Organization named the Lake Como villa as the World’s Best Hotel for 2023. It is a romance of the senses with its captivating views of Lake Como, fragrant smells that loom from the rose gardens, impeccable flavors of cuisine, faint sounds of Italian opera music playing in the background, and the top-notch service that makes you feel like royalty.” With just 24 rooms, Passalacqua offers privacy and exclusivity, creating an intimate atmosphere that makes you feel truly important. Guests will find a cigar boat at the base of the villa, with a “charming” Italian boat captain offering tours around the lake or into Bellagio for a day trip,” Davis said. “Passalacqua, simply put, is a fantasy contrasting reality.” 2: Burj Al Arab , Dubai, UAE The Burj Al Arab is the epitome of luxury, often hailed as the world’s only seven-star hotel. “Renowned for its unparalleled service, opulent amenities and the fact that every room is a suite, the Burj ensures a stay that surpasses traditional standards with an over-the-top vibe,” Davis said. The hotel’s lavish interior is adorned with real gold accents, adding an extra layer of sophistication to an indulgent experience. “Relax by the pool in your private Cabana with Crystal and Caviar service and soak up the Arabian sun while socializing with the who’s-who of Dubai, Davis said. “Don’t forget to order their famous $50.00 Gold Latte made with real gold and don the signature gold mustache for a selfie.” 3: Jaoli , Maldives Davis said Joali is an “unparalleled” destination for couples seeking an intimate and romantic escape. “If you are looking for the perfect honeymoon destination or marriage revival trip this is your place. The vast over-the-water rooms, luxurious and beautifully designed, with their own private pool and 24-hour butler service offer a sanctuary like no other,” Davis said. Joali has five restaurants to choose from, or guests can plan a romantic private dinner and movie on the beach. For an even more private beach excursion, guests can rent a private island for the day — clothing optional. Guests can snorkel and swim with the turtles, or, if they’re feeling more social, can visit the infinity pool next to the bar and enjoy the serene surroundings and turquoise sea while sipping a Mai Tai out of a coconut. “Joali combines opulence, eco-consciousness, romance and spirituality, making it the standout destination in the Maldives,” Davis said. 4: The Oberoi Rajvilas , Jaipur, India “Choosing to stay at the Oberoi Rajvilas in India's Pink City, means immersing yourself in a world of luxury,” Davis said. “Every detail from accommodation, to spa, pool, cultural immersion, and dining is meticulously crafted to ensure a stay that is nothing short of extraordinary and relaxing.” Guests can soak in a candlelit bathtub that is filled with rose petals every night, visit the spa for a tranquil massage and facial, enjoy authentic Rajasthani cuisine, and get henna by the pool surrounded by peacocks. 5: Forestis , Italian Dolomites “Forestis is perfect for the active traveler seeking a blend of health, wellness, exploration, and luxury,” Davis said. “This destination is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.” Guests can ride a mountain bike through breathtaking scenery or hike to the gondola for lunch at the peak of the mountain. Forestis focuses on healthy cuisine, incorporating local fresh ingredients for a nutritious dining experience. “Watch the sun disappear behind the Dolomite Mountains from your balcony bed while you sip on wine and toast to nature's embrace,” Davis advised. 6: Eden Rock , St. Barts, Caribbean Eden Rock is a favored destination for celebrities and others who appreciate the finer things in life. It’s famous for its lavish accommodations, stunning views, and vibrant entertainment. “Sip rose slushies on your beach day-bed and rub shoulders with celebrities while getting a Caribbean tan,” Davis advised. “A favorite room is the Garbo Suite, which offers one of the best views on the property, your own balcony and garden for relaxing. The world famous Nikki Beach is steps away where you can stand on tables, dance, and fist pump your way into oblivion, or simply enjoy some of the best people watching in the Caribbean.” 7: The Springs Resort and Spa , Costa Rica The Springs Resort and Spa offers a unique blend of luxury and adventure, making it the perfect match for those seeking opulence and excitement. Take a fast-paced horseback riding adventure through the jungle, or try the heart-pounding whitewater rafting tour,” Davis recommends. “You can embark on adrenaline-pumping adventures or choose to relax in the spa and palatial suites. Take a dip in the hot springs for a relaxing soak or unique tubing experience. It is the best of both worlds and all set against the backdrop of Costa Rica’s stunning scenery.” Davis, an Ironman triathlete, now finds her thrills escaping to luxury destinations around the world, sharing her journeys on Instagram , and wants others to believe in a dream vacation of their own. No matter where you decide to visit, Davis advises packing a universal appliance adapter for anything that needs to be plugged in or charged, along with some snacks, because “bringing a little bit of home to a foreign country is always a nice treat to have.”
