Sailing in sweden.
A sailing holiday in Sweden is a unique way to enjoy this scenic country, which offers diverse coastlines and excellent conditions for a boat trip. Cruise the Baltic Sea to the east of Sweden, and visit the island of Gotland and Öland with their lush green landscapes or sail up the Gulf of Bothnia, stopping at the colorful port city of Örnsköldsvik. A boat from Gothenburg can either take you around Sweden’s second biggest city or to Denmark, which is only a short boat ride away. Enjoy these sights and more with a boat rental in Sweden .

Fine dining in Sweden:
Sweden has a rich history spanning centuries, with numerous historical sites and landmarks that offer a glimpse into its interesting past. From ruins of the Viking era to more modern times there is plenty to see for every visitor.
Gamla Stan , the Old Town of Stockholm , is a well-preserved medieval part of the capital that features narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and iconic landmarks such as the Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral . While the cathedral dates back to Medieval times and is the oldest one of its kind in the city, the other buildings are only going back as far as the 17th and 18th century. Take a stroll through the charming streets and explore the historic architecture and charming squares. Definitely a must when visiting this part of Sweden!
There is a lot of folklore in the Swedish tradition, making for excellent stories by the fireplace. I mean, imagine sitting beside the fire on a cold winter's night after a long day out on a boat and hearing these old stories while sipping on a nice wine or a warm cup of tea in a bar. A mythical creature with the name of Näcken is one of the most popular characters and is said to appear as a naked man playing the violin in rivers and lakes.
If you are not into stories, you can always head out into nature to explore the mysteries of nature. Witness the natural phenomena of the Midnight Sun during the summer months in the Arctic Circle. Experience the ethereal glow of the sun even at midnight. This is a once in a lifetime experience you wouldn’t want to miss. In the winter, chase the breathtaking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing across the night sky.
While you will experience colder temperatures the further north you go, in the summer, Stockholm enjoys temperatures that frequently reach the low- to mid-20s with water temperatures of around 18°C. Visby offers roughly the same temperatures, but with winds in the area. These winds can sometimes even be strong in the summer. Tides are not a particular concern and remain at consistent levels with calm seas keeping waves reasonably low too.
The waters that surround Sweden are generally calm and make for a pleasant sailing holiday. You’ll only need to watch out for stronger gusts between the narrow passages that snake around the islands. There are generally very few hazards to watch out for, except for some rocky areas around the archipelago.
If you need help with the navigation and operation of your boat, you can take advantage of booking an experienced skipper with Borrow A Boat.
Sweden is certainly not a cheap country in general and a boat rental in Sweden might be a little pricier than what you are used to from the Mediterranean, but it is definitely worth it. Prices can also vary depending on the season, type of boat and the amount of people travelling.
As Sweden is blessed with gusts that allow for a sailing adventure, a popular choice is to rent a sailboat in Sweden . If you would like to be a little bit more independent of mother nature a motorboat rental might be an even better option for you.
Rent a sailboat in Sweden
Pros of renting a sailboat in Sweden
Rent a sailboat in Sweden if you are ready for a real adventure. Sail with the frequent gusts in the picturesque Baltic Sea and admire the stunning mountainous landscape.
Are you always conscious of your environment and don’t want to add to the pollution and CO2-emissions? Then a sailboat rental in Sweden is just the right choice for you. You simply sail with the wind and don’t need to worry about using an engine and fuel it with petrol.
Another great thing about renting a sailboat in Sweden is the fact that they are often the most affordable boats to rent. Not just in terms of the price for a bareboat charter, but also in terms of additional costs like petrol that you won’t have to worry about.
Cons of renting a sailboat in Sweden
Even though a sailboat charter in Sweden comes down to lower costs and sustainability, it also means that you will be highly dependent on mother nature. You won’t be able to sail if the winds are not strong enough and have to patiently wait for the wind to pick up again and cannot sail either if the winds are too strong. This might raise concerns for your safety.
Another thing to keep in mind when chartering a sailboat in Sweden is the fact that you need a lot of experience to operate them. You can’t just go on board, press a button and think that you’re going to be fine. You need to know how to navigate the steering wheel as well as how high or low the sail should go.
Pros of renting a motorboat in Sweden
A motorboat rental in Sweden is a great choice for anyone who enjoys the flexibility of being able to go whenever and wherever they want. All you need is a full tank and you’re good to go. There is no need to wait for the wind to pick up in order to move forward.
Do you plan on visiting Sweden’s most beautiful and pristine beaches? Then a motorboat charter in Sweden is the perfect choice for you! Motorboats generally have a shallow draft, allowing for easy access to the coast. One of the nicest beaches is Skanör Beach in the South of Sweden.
Cons of renting a motorboat in Sweden
If you are travelling on a budget, a motorboat hire in Sweden might not necessarily be the boat to go for. Although you can choose between more affordable and more luxurious types of motorboats, you need to keep in mind that you won’t just pay the price of the bareboat charter, but also for the petrol you are using on your trip.
Motorboat rental in Sweden
Anyone who wants to rent a boat in Sweden needs to be in possession of a valid boat licence - unless you are just planning on renting a smaller boat in Sweden that is not longer than 12 metres and doesn’t go beyond 4 metres width. Then you don’t need a licence.
The International Certificate of Competency or short ICC might be recognized in many other European countries, but not in Sweden. Here you should be able to present the Coastal Yachtmaster Diploma instead.
Sweden has many fascinating and beautiful landscapes to discover along its coastline. From quaint little fishing villages to bigger cities and mountains. As it does get quite cold and icy in the winter, coming here in the summer might be a better choice.
Start your sailing holiday from Lidingö near Stockholm and enjoy sailing around the myriad of islands that make up the Stockholm Archipelago . There are over 24.000 to choose from, including all the rocks and other interesting natural phenomena. If you just want to plan a day trip from Stockholm your best bet might be Fjäderholmarna , which is only a thirty minute boat ride away. While it might be nicer to visit the islands here in the summer, the winters here also have their charm.
From the Stockholm Archipelago , you can sail north to the Gulf of Bothnia or go down to Gotland . For those looking for pristine nature and a chance to get away from it all, it is recommended to sail around the Gulf of Bothnia . Luleå is a city that is worth visiting on your trip here if you crave some human interaction in between. Ormberget-Hertsölandet is a natural preserve with pristine natural beauty that you shouldn’t miss. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even sail over to Finland from here - it’s really not that far.
Gotland on the contrary is popular for travelers with more of a cultural interest who would also like to spend some time on some of Sweden’s best beaches. Also, head further south to Öland to explore the quaint fishing village, majestic forests, castle ruins and lovely beaches. Öland is also home to the Great Alvar , a natural landscape that is also a World Heritage Site. Families will also love visiting Ölands Animal and Amusement Park.
Västervik sits on the coast across the sea from Gotland and also offers mooring at buoys as an additional stopping point before heading to the islands or down the coast towards Malmö . Malmö itself is another major harbour offering longer-term berthing if desired. It’s a great city to visit if you’re interested in heading across and seeing Denmark as well.
Overall, a sailing holiday in Sweden is a unique way to see the varied landscape of this striking area too often missed by those travelling on land and experiencing a different kind of sailing adventure than the one you would get in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.
Explore the magic of Northern Europe by embarking on a luxury yacht charter along the coast of Sweden. A stunningly beautiful Scandinavian destination, Sweden is known for its untouched natural landscapes dotted with coastal villages and metropolitan cities. Its rich, compelling history and natural charm paired with its pristine cruising grounds ensure Sweden is the ideal base for a completely unique and idyllic charter. Home to the extensive Stockholm archipelago, which comprises over 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks, this Scandinavian region is a dream playground for charterers. As each of the islands feature its own distinctive and unique character, there is a range of experiences to enjoy, from wild, nature adventures to watersports and cultural sightseeing. Experience the finest of Sweden and learn why more people are opting to explore the land of the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights via a yacht charter.

Sweden news.
Journey north on a Sweden luxury yacht charter and witness the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun in awe-striking surroundings. This Nordic holiday destination is a recent magnet for explorer yachts, motor yachts and sailing yachts, who choose Sweden for its compelling history and natural beauty that is just as rich although starkly different to the lifestyle of the Mediterranean.
Sweden is bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, and a Scandinavian holiday could easily involve more than one country to take in the region's most remarkable sights.
Malmo, Gothenburg and Stockholm are the main cities to visit for shopping, culture and an upbeat nightlife in a country famed for its Volvos, Vikings, snowbound wintry conditions, herring and meatballs. With the archipelagos surrounding Stockholm there are myriad private anchorages for sunbathing, swimming or holding an exclusive party.
The peninsulas are excellent for exploration by kayak, paddleboard of jet ski, and those on board hoping to fish for their supper will be delighted by the Baltic Sea inundated with cod, salmon and lobster. Scuba divers can head down to see these species swimming freely through the waters, all while visiting one wreck after another that sank more than a century ago.
Sweden offers a diverse set of yacht charter possibilities, and this makes this Nordic country an excellent and perfect base for seasoned sailors who want to visit the most important and popular sights and attractions in the region. Stockholm is a main maritime hub and provides convenient access to several attractions within the Baltic coast. In line with this, there has been an increase in large luxury yachts and superyachts - both private and available for charter - visiting Sweden and Northern Europe.
There are plenty of ways to spend a week in Sweden to make your holiday an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. Contact CharterWorld to find out more about luxury yacht charter itineraries and vessel options for this incredible and relatively undiscovered destination.
Unforgettable natural phenomena (Midnight Sun, Aurora Borealis), Stunning waterfalls, Impressive forts and castles, Active outdoor lifestyle, Thriving flora and fauna
Sweden is surrounded by the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. With its close proximity to Norway a luxury yacht itinerary could easily include a visit to the mystical Norwegian Fjords, where the waterfalls are frozen solid over winter in a fantastic icy display.
Sample Belgium's delectable chocolates and stop by at Antwerp for its famous diamond district, or keep your eye out as you pass by the Dutch shipyards. To the east, you can cruise through the Baltic Sea and visit St. Petersburg, renowned for its art and cafe culture.
Your yacht charter holiday experience in Sweden is an eclectic mix of the old charm which pervades in several old towns and the cosmopolitan character of modern cities. An important destination for yacht charter holidaymakers is Gothenburg, which is the second biggest city of Sweden. It is famous for its diverse shopping opportunities, dining treats and sightseeing choices.
The beautiful city of Gothenburg is styled with boulevards and broad canals that exude a magical and romantic vibe. An evening in Gothenburg can be spent sampling the local craft beers and wines at the bars and clubs along the waterfront, but during the day there are world-class museums to explore, including the Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Natural History, the Maritime Museum with an Aquarium and the Museum of World Culture. Take in the fresh air with a stroll through the Botanical Garden, and this modern city has a fantastic array of modern boutiques and shopping malls.
North of Malmo the bays have beautiful sandy beaches for games and water sports, and the nearby peninsula is the Kullenberg Nature Reserve which is a popular spot for Scuba divers because of the range of shallow and deep sites. Herring is often spotted along with cod, salmon and lobster and a basking shark might occasionally be sighted in the area as well.
In Malmo itself there are some excellent hidden bars and Michelin-starred restaurants to end a day of sunbathing on the local beaches or exploring the sights: Malmö Castle, Little Square, St. Peter's Church, Malmö Konsthall and Moderna Museet Malmö are close to the large local parks and are best explored by bike.
Skane at the southern tip of Sweden is referred to as the Swedish Riviera and the most popular area between Osterlen to Kristianstad is renowned for its long soft crescent beaches and clear waters. The bays make excellent anchorages on a stop along the coastline and wind conditions are ideal for windsurfers, kite surfers and sailing dinghys.
The picturesque and well-loved yacht charter holiday destinations in the charming Nordic country include the Stockholm archipelago and the Bohuslan region. Stockholm holds the enviable distinction of being the world’s largest archipelago. Ideal places to visit include premier tourist spots like Marstand and Nykoping , where you can immerse yourself in everyday life in a typical Swedish fishing village.
The capital city of Stockholm has enough to keep you in the city for days, to name but a few: The palace/museum 'Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde', the Vasa Museum which holds the well-preserved wreck of a 17th Century ship, the ABBA Museum and the Thielska Galleriet, which has an extensive collection that includes the paintings of Edvard Munch. The Old Town on the island of Gamla Stan is colourful, atmospheric and culturally rich with even more museums detailing medieval culture and royal life. The T-Centralen is also more than just a railways station – it’s an underground art exhibition and should be seen regardless of whether you intend to hop on a train.
There are walking tours of the city that tell of its captivating history and ghost stories, as well as tours taking you on tasting sessions for wine and craft beers. There are exceptional restaurants in Stockholm - including the three-starred Michelin restaurant Frantzén - for a sensational dining treat to make an anniversary or special occasion even more unforgettable.

Welcome to Stockholm
In 2024 we open up our base in Saltsjö Pir for the third consecutive year. In the Stockholm archipelago there are more than 30,000 islands to explore. Experience the best views with us. Welcome to the capital!
Stockholm's archipelago is the largest in Sweden with about 30,000 islands, of which 200 are inhabited. Only the archipelago in southern Finland is larger. The archipelago ranges from Södermanland up to the coast to Uppland. Stockholm's archipelago is usually divided into three parts; the northern, the southern and the central archipelago.
The northern archipelago is most often referred to the coastal line between Vaxholm in the south and Norrtälje in the north. The southern archipelago is commonly referred to the area between Dalarö in the north and Nynäshamn in the south. The area between Vaxholm and Dalarö is commonly referred to as the central archipelago, consisting of many popular islands.
As you can see on the map, our base is located in the central archipelago, more specifically in Saltsjöbaden, a perfect starting point wherever you want to sail. Some distance away is Sandhamn, the east coast's equivalent of Marstrand. Vaxholm, Utö, Möja and Finnhamn are other popular islands in the area.
If you plan to sail for several weeks, there are many options. South of Stockholm is the beautiful St. Anna's archipelago. If you are closeby, it may be worth sailing over to Gotland. North of Stockholm you can find the popular Höga Kusten.
Our new base in central stockholm, discover the best of the archipelago.
With more than 40 years on the water, we've learned to know the very best places to explore from the Swedish archipelagos . When you book a boat with us, we are happy to help you develop a route that suits you. Feel free to read more below about some of our favorite places on the Swedish East Coast.
Vaxholm is its own urban area in Uppland, with its center within walking distance of the guest harbor. A relaxing archipelago town with a large selection for every need.
A historic island in a fantastic location. In Sandhamn there are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops but the island is large and offers calm, peaceful spots as well.
Ingmarsö is the relaxing archipelago idyll and the living archipelago. Here you find protection from all winds and you can enjoy fantastic, peaceful sunsets in the evening.
Sometimes referred to as "the gateway to paradise". Dalarö is the place where history and the future meet. There are three guest harbors, with fantastic service and incredible facilities.
One of the closest archipelago islands, a perfect last night stop. Here you will find plenty of food, crafts and fantastic nature. A popular place for both Stockholmers and tourists.
Grinda is one of the most popular destinations in the archipelago The guest harbor is very nice, and from here you are always close to both beaches, cliffs and walking paths.
If you decide to sail with a skipper, you don't need any prior experience with sailing or boats. The skipper knows the archipelago well and will guide you to the most beautiful places you want to see. Before sailing off, you'll plan your trip together in the Saltsjö Pir Marina. Afterwards, you can simply relax and enjoy the journey. If you're curious about sailing - this is a great opportunity to learn!
