Newcastle was a welcome sight for 200 sailors as their first taste of land for 2024

The City of Newcastle is stop number six for the 2023-2024 Clipper Around the World Race.

Newcastle locals turned out in force to greet over 200 sailors as they arrived after spending Christmas and New Year at sea. Racing in eleven identical yachts, the sailors are competing in Leg 4 of the 2023-2024 Clipper Around the World Race, and set sail from the West Australian port of Fremantle on the 19th December 2023 bound for the East Coast of Australia.

First held in 1996, the Clipper Around the World Race is an international yacht racing event that brings together non-professional sailors from all over the world to circumnavigate the globe. After undertaking rigorous training, the competitors set off on the 40,000 nautical mile (74,080km) race which is split into eight legs, visiting fourteen ports on six different continents.

The award-winning Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is the host for a stopover on leg 4, the Australian Coast to Coast leg which takes in Fremantle (WA), Newcastle (NSW), and Airlie Beach (QLD) before heading to China. Leaving Fremantle, the fleet set off on a 2900 nautical mile journey rounding the southern tip of Tasmania, before a tactical battle up the coast including Christmas and New Year wrapped in wet weather gear as the summer storms made life interesting.

Over 54 nationalities are represented in the fleet with 13 Australians amongst them, and they were all very pleased to reach Newcastle.

Laura Ayres, Managing Director of Clipper Ventures, is based in Gosport in the UK but was onsite in Newcastle to greet the sailors as they arrived. “Newcastle is ideal as a stopover port for the race. A great midway point between Fremantle and the Whitsundays, and excellent facilities” she said. “We have received lots of community support, and a level of professional backup that makes the city an ideal hub for ocean racing.”

George Coldham, a 29-year-old software consultant from the Northwest of England, is a competitor doing the full circumnavigation on the yacht UNICEF . “I live two miles from the wettest town in England so somehow spending 11 months on a boat seems almost normal” he said laughing.

Coldham is looking forward to having some time to relax. “Stopovers in places like Newcastle in summer make it worthwhile though. Everyone at the club has been very welcoming and helpful with information about local activities. We have around three days of boat maintenance, but then our time is our own. I have already been in touch with the local rowing and swimming clubs, and then I’m off for a trail run at Blackbutt Reserve.”

Local Newcastle sailor Bronwen Crosby will be taking it all in as she will be joining the Zhuhai entry for the Whitsundays to Vietnam-China leg. Bronwen learnt to sail at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s sail training academy and inspired by Lisa Blair, another Australian sailor who has competed in the event, set her sights on the offshore adventure. “After reading Lisa’s book telling her story of becoming the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica, I made up my mind to join the Clipper Race. I can’t wait to get onboard!”

Declan Clausen, Deputy Lord Mayor City of Newcastle, was an honoured guest at the celebration to congratulate the placegetters, presenting them with their pennants and welcoming all the sailors of the Clipper Around the World Race to the city.

The Deputy Lord Mayor also praised the organisation that was needed to be the host city saying that he “wanted to acknowledge the amazing partnership that has been formed between the City of Newcastle and the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.”

Congratulating the competitors and the Clipper Around the World Race organisers, the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Commodore Barry Kelly said at the celebration “Few people can talk about sailing around the world. Something drove you to the sport of sailing. There is nothing like it.”

The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. About Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

The Club was incorporated on the 19th of April, 1994, and since then, has grown to be a nationally recognised name in both sailing and sailing development. NCYC has gone through various phases of development, beginning with the completion of four marina arms, boatyard, and commercial centre. The second phase of development saw the completion of two more marina arms, and the completion of the Clubhouse in 2008. In 2021, the Club completed stage three, doubling the capacity of its Clubhouse.

SailFest Newcastle 2024 – Australian Yachting Championship

Sunday was far calmer on the offshore course as the 2024 Australian Yachting Championships and SailFest Newcastle completed two final windward-leeward races to decide the silverware.

The light-air specialists seized their chance to move up the leaderboard after being battered by 4-metre seas on Day 2, Joe de Kock’s Farr 40 KD1 being a prime example as it came from behind to win the Division 2 national title.

Others tumbled after looking famous overnight, while two yachts – the TP52 Matador and Corby 36 Let’s Get It On – simply proved they could change gears as required to claim victory in Division 1 and 3 respectively on IRC handicap.

Racing began 30 minutes late as a fickle northerly breeze settled into a rhythm. It began at six knots and gradually wheezed its way to 11 knots as the day progressed. Fortunately, swell height had almost halved overnight.

In arguably the strongest TP52 fleet ever assembled in Australia, David Doherty and his crew aboard Matador made it four out of four windward-leeward bullets, their only blemish being a start line infringement and a subsequent 5th placing in the opening passage race. They also blitzed the class-based TP Rating, finishing 11 points ahead of the chasing pack after five races.

“I’m extremely proud,” Doherty said. “We paid the price in the first race for being a bit too eager, but the boat’s going really well and the crew are just a great group of people. They were the key to winning.”

The crew continually changed rig set-ups to suit the differing conditions, while Grant Simmer called strategy and Steven Thomas tactics.

Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Men’s Business (SMB) finished runner-up on both IRC and TPR, justifying the logistic and financial commitment of trucking the orange-hulled yacht from South Australia to Newcastle.

“We made the decision fairly late and missed a couple of our crew, but I’m glad we did it. The Newcastle series is our favourite, then we’ll do Sail Port Stephens and Pittwater for the Gold Cup,” Boettcher said.

SMB had previously encountered Marcus Blackmore’s new Hooligan at Port Lincoln and took encouragement from the result, but had no answer for Matador – Boettcher’s former boat.

“Our learning curve was huge again here, both on the start line and in tuning to the conditions,” he added. “I said to be boys that we’d love to start the regatta again now, using what we’ve learned in tweaking it.”

Joe de Kock had faith that KD1 could perform to its IRC rating: “Farr 40s are good in light airs; yesterday was bad,” he said. “People confuse that with Farr 40s not being able to rate competitively, but at this time of year the winds are generally light so I always thought we had a good shot.”

Maritimo 54 , the largest yacht in the field, couldn’t get going today, posting two last placings in Division 2. It allowed the two DK46s LCE Old School Racing and Nine Dragons to take the remaining podium steps. For Southport Yacht Club’s Garry Holt, it was his second national championship after winning in a modified Adams at Hamilton Island two years ago. This time, he was aboard a Corby 36 formerly owned by motor racing identity Roland Dane and configured by Michael Spies.

“The boat had a successful racing history in Thailand and I told Spiesy that I’d buy it one day, which I did. I eventually brought it back to Australia and modified it with Corby’s involvement. It’s one of those freak yachts but you need a great crew as well,” Holt said. “Today in the light airs the Mumm 30 [Foreign Affair] was so damn quick that we were lucky to finish third in the first race, which put us tied on points. The wind then increased and we sailed a brilliant last race.”

Among Let’s Get it On ’s crew was Warwick Rooklyn, a skiff and Melges 24 champion whose ocean racing career dates back to his late father’s famous yachts Ballyhoo and Apollo.

In other SailFest Newcastle Regatta results, ORC honours went to Let’s Get it On and Soozal , while Soozal and Foreign Affair won on PHS. Newcastle’s She’s the Culprit took the Cruising Class trophy.

Australian Yachting Championships & Newcastle SailFest Regatta

Elite fleet set to contest australian yachting championships at newcastle sailfest regatta.

An elite fleet of offshore racing thoroughbreds is assembling at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) this week ahead of the Australian Yachting Championships starting Friday, April 5, as part of the annual Newcastle SailFest Regatta.

Included will be a dozen tp52s, the largest ever gathering of these grand-prix yachts in australia, plus two mixed divisions that boast a number of highly credentialed state and club champions..

Race organisers at the NCYC believe it is the strongest offshore fleet ever to race in the region.

“We’ve held the Australian Yachting Championships previously but the event has grown in stature since then, and we’ve never had such a strong TP52 presence,” NCYC CEO Paul O’Rourke says.

“Secret Men’s Business [a TP52] has been trucked here from South Australia to defend its national title and will face Marcus Blackmore’s brand new Hooligan, along with a number of other top-flight contenders in that class.

“At the moment the Friday forecast is looking challenging but we’re looking forward to seeing some world-class racing both off the coast and inside the Harbour over the weekend.”

Weather-permitting, there will be an in-harbour start for the TP52s and offshore divisions from around 11.30am on Saturday, accompanied by a firing of Fort Scratchley’s 80-pound gun. Queens Wharf will provide the best vantage point as the yachts leave the port for an offshore passage race before returning to the finish.

“The recent Clipper Round the World Yacht Race start sparked incredible interest, and I think the Australian Yachting Championships start could surpass it. It’s a bigger fleet and the yachts are faster,” Paul O’Rourke adds.

“There will be an absolute buzz around the club too, and visitors are welcome to come and experience the excitement for themselves.”

As part of SailFest activities, spectators can also catch the historic ‘Cock of the Harbour’ race run by Stockton’s Port Hunter 16ft Sailing Skiff Club, with high-performance catamarans and dinghies vying to be crowned the fastest sailing boat on the harbour. Start time is around 2pm.

Families can also get involved on Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7, as kids aged 6 to 12 are invited to try sailing for free under the supervision of qualified instructors. The boats will launch immediately in front of the NCYC Clubhouse at 95 Hannell Street Wickham between 10am and 2pm.

The Australian Yachting Championships will kickstart a month-long sailing spectacle in the Hunter as the yachts then head to Sail Port Stephens , also run under the auspices of the NCYC. Australia’s second-largest regatta, it spans three weekends from April 15 to May 5 and includes the iconic Commodore’s Cup, NSW Yachting Championships, and an off-the-beach series for dinghies and Windsurfers.

Most southerly route of the Clipper Race

The 11 teams competing in the 2023-24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will begin Leg 4 of their circumnavigation on December 19 from Fremantle, Australia.

The fourth leg is divided into two stages, with the first part sending the fleet on a 2,500nm course around the south of Australia up to Newcastle, New South Wales. This race is set to be a real test with breezy conditions predicted.

“Because of the weather conditions from the beginning of this race, it’s looking to be quite a tough start,” noted Deputy Race Director Dale Smyth. “Traditionally here there are a lot of southerlies that blow, so it’s quite a hard beat right down until the fleet gets past Cape Leeuwin.

“Even then, it’s still a challenge trying to break through an area of high pressure until they get far south enough to start getting some westerlies. Once the teams are down in the south, they should get some good running conditions.

“The fleet will be going to the most southerly point of the circumnavigation, as the teams round the bottom of Tasmania, and then across the infamous Tasman Sea, where they can expect the infamous ‘southerly busters.’ After this, there will be a very tactical sail up to Newcastle against the East Australia Current.”

While some people do the full circumnavigation, there are 72 new crew joining the Clipper Race for Leg 4, which will see the fleet sail into two iconic Aussie ports: Newcastle, NSW for the first half and then finish in Airlie Beach, Queensland. Among the crew are thirteen Australians who will be sailing around their home country.

The fleet has an arrival window of January 1 to 4 in Newcastle, Australia.

About the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race: The Clipper Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69. His aim was to allow anyone, regardless of previous sailing experience, the chance to embrace the thrill of ocean racing; it is the only event of its kind for amateur sailors.

Held biennially, the Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race got underway September 3 for the fleet of eleven identical Tony Castro designed Clipper 70s. This 13th edition has 24 crew aboard each yacht, coming from 63 different nationalities (105 sailors from the USA) for the 40,000 mile circumnavigation of the world.

The course is divided into 8 legs and 14 individual races, with some of the crew in for the entire circumnavigation while others will do individual legs. The team having the best cumulative score over the entire course will win the Clipper Race Trophy.

The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is back on the waters again for its 76th year. About 150 vessels departed from Newport Harbor Friday and sailed past the Balboa Pier, where onlookers marveled at the scene.

The race, as it does every year, began in Newport Beach. Two tracks are available for those participating — one to San Diego and the other to Ensenada. Weather predictions, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Assn., which organizes the race, indicated the race would be smooth sailing on Friday.

With relatively gentle winds in the morning, wind speeds were expected to pick up from the west and remain steady through the evening.

The Newport to Ensenada race first began in 1948.

As of Friday afternoon, the Taniwha appeared to be leading in the race to Ensenada. It was followed by the Bottle Rocket and the Fast Exit II.

The Maiden team from the UK crossed the finish line at Cowes, Isle of Wight, earlier this month having sailed for 153 days in the Ocean Globe Race.

They had passed through South Africa, New Zealand and finally Punta del Este, Uruguay, before making a beeline back to British shores.

Camilla welcomed the crew to Clarence House, saying: "You're doing a brilliant job, keep on doing it - that's really important."

Captain Heather Thomas, one of the five Brits on board, said: "It was incredible after we'd found out we'd won.

"It's a pretty historic moment for women's sailing, I'm really happy with the result, the girls all worked really hard for it - so we're proud of ourselves."

The winning yacht was sailed by an international crew that included women from South Africa, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.
