Some classic power boats and classic sailing yachts of which have great racing records whilst others represent design milestones in the development of sailing yachts, traditional river boats , commercial vessels or contemporary classics such as the historic Dunkirk Little Ship .

Usually, the build date is before 1970, however, now many modern boats are crafted in a classic build theme following traditional build criteria and the term modern classic is now commonplace when looking at this type of boat.

Mulder Yachts

Established by Dirk Mulder in 1938, Mulder Shipyard turned into a well-known company with an interesting history of shipbuilding. Traditional family business has won an excellent reputation thanks to the classical models of cruisers «Super Favorite Cruisers», line «Favorite Superieur», a wide range of semi-custom motor yachts and individual projects «Mulder Custom Build».

Dirk Mulder Sr. founded his business in 1938 in the place where now the shipyard is located, when he was only 27. While managing hardware shop, a carpentry workshop, production of wooden canoes and rowing boats, Dirk studied yacht building in the evenings. Mulder Shipyard originally produced mostly open wooden sailboats, such as racing «Pampus». After some time Mulder has created a brand new sailing yacht of his own design, a 9- meter «Dimu», made ​​of solid mahogany with oak accents. Healey 55: The boat that sank Stirling Moss

A holiday in the Bahamas in the 1950s where keen water-skier Donald Mitchell Healey holidayed with a young Stirling Moss persuaded the motor manufacturer that there was business to be had in pacey, competitively-priced sports boats to complement his company’s sports cars.

Healey had already scored a hit with the Austin-Healey 100, which evolved into the 3000, and set up Healey Marine in Warwick in 1955. The 16ft (4.9m) Healey 55, announced at the 1956 London Boat Show, was built of marine ply with mahogany frames and keel and classy planked decks. Motive power, as you’d expect, was car-derived, with a centre-mounted BMC 1,489cc in-line four, as fitted to the MGA sportscar. And ads for the Healey 55 proclaimed: “As thrilling on the water as the famous Healey sports car… it is built in the tradition of the fabulous world-record-breaking Healey Sports Car and is every bit as good as it looks.”

This Healey 55 has been fully restored over a number of years and is described as “one of the finest examples you will see, so well done it would be difficult to find fault or incorrect detail.” With a new road trailer and cover, it’s yet to hit the water; the fully rebuilt MGA engine and transmission have also been bench-tested. 

Healey wound down its marine venture in the early 1960s after producing around 1,400 boats, including, it’s thought, around 50 Healey 55s. One notable episode features Stirling Moss who hit a reef in one in the Bahamas and later recalled: “As every good captain, I stayed with my sinking ship until the end.”  Both Moss and the salvaged Healey survived.

Timmerman Yachts is a Russian builder of quality luxury motor yachts. Based in Moscow, it is owned by a group of Dutch and Russian investors and operates out of Moscow Shipyard. British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have also tipped over more easily with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could right."

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at around 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.

The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the "British Bill Gates" and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges , which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The vessel had passengers from Britain, America and Canada, the Italian coastguard said.

Most of those on board were British, Italian news outlets have reported, adding that the others were from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Ricardo Thomas, who was believed to be the on-board chef, has been found dead, Sicilian authorities told Canadian broadcaster CBC. He was reportedly from Canada but was living in Antigua.

Eight of those rescued were transferred to local hospitals and all were in stable condition, local media reported.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian was known for its unusual 75m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel, which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

THE £14million Bayesian superyacht rapidly sank over 160ft to the bottom of the sea after it was caught up in a tornado on Monday morning.

Terrified passengers made up of mostly Brits were left screaming in fear as they were forced to cram into a lifeboat as the vessel capsized when the mast collapsed .

And some six passengers, including four Brits, remain missing - including Brit tech tycoon Mike Lynch & his daughter Hannah, 18.

The party had been gathered on the yacht to celebrate Lynch beating a long-running court case in the US.

Sicily was hit with a surging weather warning as storm rolled in while the group slept aboard the £14million charter yacht.

Torrential rain and horror winds battered much of the Porticello port in Palermo with the pricey superyacht being severely affected.

A yacht industry source has revealed this intense weather likely caused the vessel to take on too much water after the weight of the mast took the hull beyond the “down-flooding angle”.

This led to sea water flooding the deck before the high winds toppled over the towering mast.

The source told The Times : “The wind toppled the mast, which fell over the side, causing the boat to heel over and take on water, capsize and sink very quickly."

Locals reported feeling a mini-tornado on Sunday evening through to Monday which lasted for several minutes.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said 200kmh winds could be felt.

He described the weather as: “A so-called funnel cloud forms, generating winds of up to 200kmh which can create a water spout at sea by sucking water into the air.

“The event can be restricted to a few hundred metres and be over in ten minutes."

The heroic captain of a boat that helped rescue 15 of the terrified tourists from the doomed superyacht has described how he saw the Bayesian disappear beneath the waves.

Karsten Borner says his crew onboard the Sir Robert  BP  was battered by the strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall which led to them anchoring up not far from Porticello port.

The Bayesian  was said to be already anchored up nearby but once the worst of the storm hit it started to sink.

Borner told media earlier today: "We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone."

The captain says the Bayesian "went flat on the water and then down".

"There was a light and we saw that the ship was aside and then we saw a triangle. So I think she went back down," Borner added.

A local fisherman also says they saw debris from the doomed yacht “floating in the sea” after the storm.

He told Reuters that t-shirts and mats appeared on the water.

After noticing the Bayesian had vanished, Borner says his crew saw a flare in the water followed by rising smoke.

A packed life raft was drifting in the sea with 15 people inside -including a one-year-old baby.

Borner says they quickly informed the coastguard who rushed out to guide the raft back to safety.

The mum of the rescued one-year-old,  Brit tourist Charlotte Golunski,  35, says she was woken up by floods of water after the yacht was badly damaged by the tornado.

Thunder and lightning reportedly left the  yacht  "rocking" the moments before it started to fill with water, the couple said.

Charlotte managed to grab hold of young Sophia as the pair were forced into the Mediterranean as they battled against the rough  weather  and choppy waters.

Dad James Emsilie was also onboard at the time of the horror ordeal and wasn't able to find his family after being swept away by the sea.

The mother told la Repubblica about her terrifying experience, saying: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. 

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open."

Another seven tourists and crew were unable to make it on the lifeboat.

Four British tourists are feared dead including  tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch  who was onboard.

Who is Mike Lynch?

FORMER billionaire entrepreneur Mike Lynch is still believed to be missing hours after a £14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily.

The tech tycoon, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates", was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the £166,000 a week vessel, the Telegraph reported this afternoon.

Lynch, 59, is a serial entrepreneur having founded and sold tech and software companies with one of his biggest being Autonomy Corporation.

He has also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.

He was awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.

Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.

Away from work, Mike is married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair have two children together.

Angela is among those who have been rescued on the superyacht.

In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple's value at £852m.

But he was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at £79m.

Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

The doomed yacht, named Bayesian, is also said to be owned by the Lynch family.

The lifeless body of one victim, a Canadian cook who was part of the crew, has already been pulled from the Mediterranean, reports Ansa.

Two other US tourists are among those still missing.

The yacht is believed to have been flooded by water after a  tornado  off the coast of Porticello, near  Palermo , just before 5am local time on Monday morning.

Helicopters, divers, patrol boats and firefighters are all helping with the desperate search of the wreckage.

Most of those missing were passengers on the £166,000 a week charter.
