Reviving the Legend of Kialoa

Published on August 3rd, 2017 by Editor -->

It’s been 46 years since the 73-foot Kialoa II took line honours in the 1971 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and when the boat lines up for the 603 nm Rolex Fastnet Race off Cowes in the UK this Sunday, its racing revival will be complete.

Brothers Patrick (AUS) and Keith Broughton (UK) purchased the aluminum warhorse, the second in American Jim Kilroy’s series of maxi racing yachts called Kialoa, in 2016 with the view to compete in the classic ocean races, as Kialoa II did under Kilroy.

They will mark the boat’s racing comeback as one of a record 350 entries in the biennial Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rolex Fastnet Race starting Sunday August 6, 2017. The last time Kialoa II completed the Fastnet Race was in 1969 when she finished runner-up over the line.

A combined Australian and UK crew of 18, including key members of what was once Australia’s most successful maxi yacht team on George Snow’s Brindabella – names like Bob Fraser, Lindsay May and Tony Hearder among the stalwarts – are preparing for the start of the world’s biggest offshore race in a few days’ time.

“We anticipated much of the work but thought we had two to three years to address the issues,” Paddy admitted. “It turned out that there were some fundamental problems that could not wait, including the fact all the sail handling systems from the old days had atrophied to the extent that they were almost completely absent.” The refit also included all the standing and running rigging along with a complete new suit of sails.

Paddy said in the short time of their ownership Kialoa II has shown an amazing capacity to stir fond memories. “We have been approached by some of Mr Kilroy’s crew with anecdotes and hints as to how they used to sail her. His daughter Trice has been helpful with information and contacts and former members of the US Coastguard have been in touch and provided help in a number of areas. ‘I remember seeing her in 19xx’ is a regular conversation starter.”

Since the Kilroy days, Kialoa II has been used as a sail training vessel for the US Coast Guard and cruised extensively under various owners. Now the Broughtons’ journey to re-race the classics is set to begin.

First up is the Rolex Fastnet Race which will be followed by a lengthy delivery sail for the 45 ton boat to Sydney in November to tackle another major bluewater event, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on December 26.

Unlike 1971, when Kialoa II’s waterline length and speed made the Sparkman & Stephens yawl the hot favourite and ultimate Sydney Hobart line honours victor, the boat will stand up on Boxing Day against a fleet of modern 100ft supermaxis and other carbon fibre lightweights.

“What will suit us in the Rolex Fastnet and Sydney Hobart are conditions that allow us to use her waterline length and yet not enable the competition to plane. We shall see; there’s so much to re-learn,” Paddy added.

The 47th edition of the biennial race will start off the Royal Yacht Squadron line, Cowes, Isle of Wight on Sunday 6th August 2017. It is the largest offshore race in the world and attracts the most diverse fleet of yachts.

Roast dinner round the Rock: onboard the iconic Sparkman & Stephens design Kialoa II

The iconic 1963 S&S Kialoa II drew quite a crowd in Plymouth after the Rolex Fastnet Race, we took a tour

kialoa 5 sailboat

Without question one of the yachts that attracted the most lingering glances on the busy pontoons of Plymouth Yacht Haven at the Rolex Fastnet Race village last week was Kialoa II , the famous 1963 S&S design.

The languid, elegant lines of the 72-footer drew plenty of comments about being ‘a proper yacht’, while experienced racing sailors could often be spotted examining the hefty deck gear and explaining to younger crews how things were done in the days before retractable poles and asymmetrics.

Kialoa II was sailed in the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race by her current owners, brothers Paddy and Keith Broughton. Paddy described the race as an ‘absolute hoot’, with Kialoa’s  long waterline length helping eat up the miles on the upwind early stages before her considerable sail plan, bolstered by a mizzen staysail, saw them fly back from the Rock to finish in just over four days.

“In straight lines she goes fantastically,” commented Broughton. “Where there’s a fetch, and you’ve got a reasonable amount of breeze but not so much that other boats can get up and plane, the waterline line length really comes into its own.

“She leans over a little bit, puts all those beautiful lines in the water all the way from the long bow to the transom and just charges! We were doing steadily 10-11 knots for ours on end and it was wonderful.”

The team included stalwarts from the campaigns such as the famous Aussie maxi Brindabella , including navigator Lindsay May, who has over 40 Sydney-Hobart Races to his name.

Kialoa II was one of the very first aluminium yachts, and was built of aircraft grade metal for legendary owner Jim Kilroy in 1964. She entered most of the major ocean races, as recounted in Kilroy’s famous autobiography, Dare to Win. Victories included winning class in the Transpac Race in 1965, a year after her launch. She was also first home in the punishing 1971 Sydney-Hobart Race, a year which saw the fleet beating for much of the 600-mile course to Tasmania. Her previous attempt at the Fastnet, in 1969, saw her cross the line 2nd, to take 5th overall. Unlike the later  Kialoa yachts,  Kialoa II  also cruised many of the world’s oceans.

Originally a sloop, she was reconfigured with a trim tab and mizzen mast in 1967, and races today with a very similar sail plan arrangement to the days when she would have been skippered by Kilroy.

The Broughtons bought Kialoa II just over a year ago, and have worked on bringing her back to racing spec with experts such as Hugh Welbourn. One of the earliest things they realised on sail trials was that the yacht, which has deep, deep bilges, pitches fiendishly unless sailed with full fuel and water tanks.

Much of the original deck gear remains, including twin two-speed Barient coffee grinder pedestals with foot clutches and a metal chain uphaul on the inboard end of her mighty spinnaker pole.

While the original ‘Magnetron’, a forerunner of today’s microwave ovens, is no longer in the galley, the yacht’s unique gimbaled serving counter remains. It was used to full effect by the Broughtons’ crew, who enjoyed a full roast dinner served from her vintage galley on their trip around the Rock.

They now plan to sail her in some of the classic ocean races that Kilroy competed in, starting with a delivery sail down to Australia for the 2017 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race starting on Boxing Day. The plan is to set off from the UK for Cape Town, before heading across to Albany, Western Australian, letting the 53-year-old design stretch her legs in the southern Indian Ocean. In doing so  Kialoa  II would join an elite group of yachts which have competed in both the Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart Races in the same year on their own keel.

Watch out for a in-depth feature on  Kialoa II in a future issue of Yachting World magazine.

Kialoa I Race Results

Excerpt from Jim Kilroy in the Kialoa US-1 Dare to Win on the Kialoa I :

“A few years later, in 1956, as I was beginning to broaden my threshold and learn what I was doing, my friend Freddy Schenck, a yacht broker and former Snipe class world champion, called and said, “Have I deal for you!” Tom Shorts’ Tasco II , a 50-foot sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens, was for sale. Tasco II was a fractional-rigged yawl, about eight-years-old, which exhibited substantial speeds but lacked consistency. Tom Short was a San Francisco-based sailor, a yachting ship chandler, who loved to sail and cruise. He enjoyed the biennial race from Los Angeles to Honolulu called the Transpac; however, he also felt that carrying a spinnacker at night was an imposition upon enjoyable sailing and cruising. With so much power from the downwind sail, you ca go much faster, but you can also lose control. Tom loved to display his latest chandlery store items aboard the yacht, adding tremendous weight to an already heavy yacht. Fred Schenck, some friends, and I all sailed the yacht and felt there was strong potential for improvement. I bought the boat for a favorable price. We immediately commenced surgery on the new yacht, which I renamed KIALOA . I’d heard the name before, liked the sound of it and did some research. Roughly translated, in native Hawaiian it meant ‘long, white canoe.’ There would be many other long white canoes to follow…”

The Classic 1960’s Maxi

“Kialoa has raced in many of the great ocean classics, including taking line honours in the 1971 Sydney Hobart. I’ve raced in multiple Sydney to Hobarts and so has many of my Australian crew. We would like to take Kialoa on a journey to race those classics again, starting with the Rolex Fastnet” –  Paddy Broughton

KIALOA II was designed in 1963 for Jim Kilroy by the premier naval architecture firm of Sparkman and Stephens. Her design goal was to compete and win in the maxi ocean racing category. She did successfully, winning most major ocean races. One of her highlights was winning the grueling upwind Sydney-Hobart Race in 1971.

KIALOA II was built by Yacht Dynamics in Harbor City, California and launched in 1964. This firm was organized by Ken Watts, of Watts Sails, Bud Gardiner, and Donald Douglas, of the Douglas Aircraft Corporation, and Kialoa II was the first of the three vessels they built. She was the largest aluminum sailing yacht to be built in the U. S. at that time.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2023

kialoa 5 sailboat

Brothers Paddy and Keith Broughton purchased the classic S&S Kialoa II in 2016, gave her a makeover and placed 134 th overall from over 300 entries in the Rolex Fastnet Race. They sailed her to Australia and placed 56 th in the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart, with a focus on beating Kialoa II’s 1971 finish time. They did, shaving seven hours off it. In 2018, they placed 38 th and almost an hour faster than in 2017. Going back to the UK, she was second in Division 5 of the Transpac Race, then raced in the 75 th Sydney Hobart, placing 70 th for third in the Grand Veterans division. She retired with rig damage last year. Lindsay May will sail a record 49 th consecutive Hobart this year on Kialoa II.

This famous aluminium boat was launched for American, Jim Kilroy, who converted her from a sloop to a yawl in 1968, brought her to Australia in 1971 for just one Hobart and took Line Honours in little more than three and a half days. She has also taken Line Honours and won many other major races overseas.

Jail Cells? Morgues? Your Cruise Ship Has Some Surprises for You.

Here are five unexpected features on ships, some of which you hopefully won’t discover on your own.

A close-up photograph of three decks of a cruise ship's cabins, each of which has a balcony with a half wall of blue glass and two chairs.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Cruise ships have hidden features that many passengers, particularly first-timers, don’t know about. Some ships are as big as small cities, and while it’s relatively easy to familiarize yourself with a seemingly endless number of amenities — water parks, tattoo parlors, multiple restaurants — there is also an entire ecosystem, often below passenger decks, that is shrouded in mystery.

Here are five things that cruisers may not know about cruise ships:

There’s a morgue …

Cruise ships carry millions of passengers each year, and it is not uncommon for deaths to occur on board. Most vessels are required to have a morgue and additional body bags in the event of an emergency.

The morgue, usually a small stainless steel refrigerated room on the ship’s lowest deck, accommodates between two to 10 bodies, depending on the size of the vessel. When a passenger or crew member dies, officials on the ship will notify the authorities on shore and a medical team will assess the body and move it to the morgue, where it is kept until arrangements are made for repatriation. In most cases, the body will be removed at the next port of call, but sometimes will remain on board until the end of the voyage.

…and a jail

There are no police officers on cruise ships, but most vessels have small jails known as the brig, and unruly passengers could find themselves locked up if the ship’s security team determines that they have violated the cruise line’s code of conduct.

The brig, usually a bare-bones room with a bed and bathroom facilities, does not have iron bars like a traditional jail cell. It is used to detain guests who commit serious crimes like assault or possession of illegal substances. Drunk and disorderly passengers may be put under “cabin arrest,” meaning they cannot leave their cabin without a security escort.

Depending on the circumstances, most passengers put in the brig will stay there until they can be handed over to law enforcement officials.

Many ships don’t have a Deck 13

Many cruise ships do not have a Deck 13 because of the widespread superstition in Western culture that the number is unlucky. Ships with a Deck 13 typically use it for public areas, not cabins.

Some ships, like Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class vessels, have a Deck 13 because the vessels are used mainly for the company’s market in Asia, where the number is not considered unlucky. MSC ships also have a Deck 13, but not a Deck 17, because the cruise line’s founder is Italian and 17 is considered unlucky in Italy.

Cruise lines entertain other superstitions, like appointing godmothers to bless new vessels and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. They also hold naming ceremonies in which a bottle of champagne is smashed against the hull of a new ship for good luck. If the bottle fails to break, the vessel will, according to superstition, have bad luck. These days, cruise lines use mechanical devices to ensure that does not happen.

Hidden pools and facilities for the crew

There are typically more than 1,000 crew members on board large cruise ships, and while they spend most of their time serving passengers, there are several areas on the lower decks designated for them to unwind.

The facilities vary from ship to ship, but there are usually small pools in the ship’s bow exclusively for crew members, as well as restaurants, bars and recreational areas like game rooms and gyms. The designated bar, a central social hub for employees after they have finished their shifts, often hosts live music and events in the evening.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, has an entire “neighborhood” dedicated to its 2,300 crew members, with a clubhouse that has massage chairs and virtual balconies — large screens that show real-time views from outside — as well as a restaurant with portholes looking out to the ocean.

Most ships host A.A. meetings

With all-inclusive beverage packages and countless bars, cruise ships can be a tough environment for guests in recovery. Many cruise lines offer daily Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that are usually scheduled as “Friends of Bill W.,” a reference to William Wilson, who co-founded the A.A. program in 1935.

The meetings are usually held in a quiet place like the library, where guests can feel comfortable and maintain their anonymity. They are also open to other support group members, like Women for Sobriety and Narcotics Anonymous.
