Drunk skipper runs aground in Martha’s Vineyard boat bungle, police say

Vineyard Boat Crash

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (WLNE) — A skipper may have had a more eventful trip than he bargained for while sailing around the Vineyard this past weekend.

The Massachusetts State Police Department said 32-year-old Riley Blizard of Cotuit was arrested for operating under the influence after running his boat aground on Chappaquiddick Island around 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Police said two men were aboard the 43-foot-long sport boat when it crashed, explaining that a navigational error was made.

Blizard allegedly showed signs of impairment during a conversation with a responding trooper, who initiated field sobriety tests on nearby Chappaquiddick Road.

Based on the results of the tests, Blizard was placed under arrest and transported to Dukes County Jail for booking.

Blizard was charged with operating a boat under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a boat, according to state police.

He was scheduled to be arraigned at Edgartown District Court.

Caledonian Sky, a 114-passenger expedition vessel owned by Noble Caledonia , was refloated after running aground off the coast of Indonesia. All 102 passengers and 79 crew members were safe, and there was no need to evacuate the 4,290-tonne ship following the incident, which happened around noon on Saturday, March 4. There was superficial damage to the hull; following an underwater inspection, Caledonian Sky has continued on a slightly amended version of its 16-night sailing from Papua New Guinea to the Philippines. Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched amidst concern about damage caused to the coral reef near Kri Island, off Raja Ampat, and how the ship ran aground. On its Facebook page, the local tourism organisation Stay Raja Ampat asked: "How can this happen? Anchor damage from ships like these is bad enough, but actually grounding a ship on a reef takes it to a whole new level." Click to expand...

This is tragic for sure, and I agree big cruise ships shouldn't be allowed in shallow waters of Raja Ampat, or any other bio diverse areas of Indonesian waters. But the sad reality is that Indonesian fishermen do far worse damage - so where is the press coverage on that?

I also wonder how much damage to the environment is caused when the RI Gov't seems delighted to blow-up poaching foreign fishing boats. Why they couldn't be brought somewhere and properly dismantled as spares and recyclables confounds me. Alternatively they could be legally re-registered as Indonesian boats and auctioned to local fishermen.

I cannot believe they pulled the boat off at low tide, every ship I've ever read about that's gone aground always waits for high tide, so these idiots couldn't wait and caused a lot of damage to the reef

Ferry runs aground off Suwangi Island, Indonesia

yacht ran aground indonesia

Strong winds and heavy rains caused a Ro-Pax ferry to run aground near Suwangi Island in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan on Thursday, May 6.

The 30-metre Jembatan Musi II had earlier left Batulicin Port in Tanah Bumbu and was sailing for Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, when it came to rest on a shallow portion east of Suwangi Island at 11:40 local time.

The Batulicin Harbour Authority and some local police departments deployed patrol boats to the area to aid in the evacuation of the passengers and crew. Officials said that none of the 23 people on board were injured from the grounding and that no oil spills were sighted near the vessel.

Jembatan Musi II ‘s cargo of vehicles, which include four lorries, two cars, and seven motorcycles, shifted following the grounding, causing a heavy list and adding difficulty to efforts to refloat the half-submerged vessel.

Refloating efforts were still ongoing as of Sunday, May 9.

Sunken luxury yacht still at Lammermoor Beach after nearly a week, prompting environmental concerns

A sunken luxury boat in waters off the Capricorni Coast.

There are calls for a luxury yacht that sank in waters off the Capricorn Coast almost a week ago to be urgently removed.

Key points:

  • The yacht ran aground at Lammermoor beach last Thursday, after it was damaged during wild weather
  • There are calls for it to be urgently removed due to potential environmental damage
  • Maritime Safety Queensland says the owner has been given until the weekend to salvage the boat

The multi-million-dollar vessel became damaged in rough conditions last Wednesday when it started taking on water at Statue Bay.

The Yeppoon Coast Guard's Flotilla Commander, Jim Warren, said the guard was called to assist the 27-metre-long motor cruiser and water police helped to evacuate its caretaker.

"As there were no further lives in danger, the motor cruiser was then the responsibility of the owner and Coast Guard's responsibility had ended," Flotilla Commander Warren said.

"The next day, the cruiser sank lower in the water and eventually grounded on Lammermoor Beach where it remains, awaiting removal by salvage experts."

'We just need it gone'

The washed up vessel became a spectacle during the low tide, and outraged some community members who were concerned about potential environmental damage.

Capricorn Coast Landcare president Malcolm Wells said people were picking up a variety of rubbish and debris from the beach.

"Foam mattresses, lots of plastic bottles and cans and all sorts of things," he said.

"We're also worried about bits of foam and plastic and when they break up into smaller pieces. Obviously with the marine life we already have a lot of troubles with the turtles and the fish consuming rubbish along there.

"It's frustrating as nobody seems to be able to get anything done about the boat being towed away."

Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the yacht needed to be urgently removed.

"There's glass on the beach, there's navigational equipment, there's a tender boat that's washed up on the beach, it's caused an awful mess," she said.

"Local people have had to go out and clean that up, so this boat is just sort of wreaking havoc now and we just need it gone.

"Clearly the owner is not acting quickly enough and so we need to take on this responsibility and then recoup those costs from the owner."

She said the owner would normally be given a period of notice to remove the vessel themselves.

"But I would say that this has become particularly urgent because the boat is now on the beach," she said.

MSQ working with owner

The Regional Harbour Master for Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) in the Gladstone Region, John Fallon, said MSQ was working with the owner of the vessel to salvage it.

"We have given the owner until the weekend to remove the vessel," he said.

"If it doesn't happen by then, MSQ may be forced to just start taking action itself to remove the vessel from the beach and that's a contingency that we're ready to put in place should that occur.

Boat parts washed up on a beach in front of a sunken luxury boat.

"The wet weather later in the week is not looking good, so in that respect, we're hoping that the owner has some success in getting the vessel off the beach before the end of the week."

He said he was confident there were no pollutants on board anymore.

"We've been monitoring that situation for the last three days," he said.

"We're also confident that the vessel is in reasonably good condition, the inside of the vessel is not in the best condition, but the hull itself is in good condition and it's intact.

"That means it's still in the sort of condition that if the hole was fixed up in the bottom of it, it should be able to float away and be taken somewhere to be repaired."

Mr Fallon said in the event there was pollution on board, MSQ was prepared to deploy pollution boom around the vessel but was confident it was under control.

He said it was the owner's responsibility to recover the vessel and MSQ was operating within the bounds of its legislation.

A drone shot of a sunken boat off Lammermoor beach at Yeppoon May 2022.

"We operate under two areas of legislation, the Maritime Safety Act and the Maritime Pollution Act," he said.

"We have to go through due process.

"If there had have been pollution from the vessel, we could have taken more action to try and get the vessel off but as there's been no pollution, then we're guided by the Maritime Safety Act."

He said the Act gave the owner the opportunity to get the boat off the beach before other actions were taken.

"At the moment it's not a hazard to navigation and it's not a pollution risk so it's over to the owner," he said.

"If after a reasonable period of time, and now we're looking at the weekend being a reasonable period of time, he hasn't taken action or indicated that action is about to commence, then MSQ has the right under our legislation to take over the salvage or the removal of the vessel from Queensland waters."

Boat runs aground, poses no harm.

HARRISVILLE — A boat that ran aground on Lake Huron near Black River in Alcona County currently poses no environmental risks, according to Sergeant Scott McKenzie of the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office.

“There are no environmental hazards to it,” McKenzie said. “They’ve already deemed that the boat is safe.”

On Tuesday, officers from the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office responded to a marine rescue where two men were traveling north along the coastline when their 43-foot motorboat struck bottom causing the boat to take on water, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

According to McKenzie, on Wednesday morning the United States Coast Guard conducted an environmental impact assessment on the ship to ensure that it posed no risk to Lake Huron. After the assessment, they found there was no threat to environmental safety.

McKenzie says that all that remains to be resolved is for the boat to be removed, a responsibility that falls on the boat’s owners.

During the rescue, the Sheriff’s Office initially faced trouble getting close to the ship to rescue its two passengers because of the shallow water.

“We couldn’t get our boat all the way to them,” McKenzie said. “So we used a rescue rope to reach the first individual.”

Unfortunately, during the rescue of that individual, the Sheriff’s Office’s patrol boat began to take on water as well, causing minor damage to their engines and fiberglass. For safety reasons, the team returned to the harbor.

McKenzie said the Michigan Department of Natural Resources monitored the situation and dispatched their own boat to assist, along with the U.S. Coast Guard that arrived shortly after, and successfully rescued the second individual.

McKenzie praises the collaborative effort of the three agencies involved.

“I was very impressed with everyone,” McKenzie said. “The DNR was monitoring our traffic, heard my distress over the radio that we took on some water trying to get that first person in our boat, and they grabbed their big boat from the harbor and started heading out.

“In conjunction, the U.S. Coast Guard, that came from the Tawas area, got on the scene as well,” he continued. “So the coordination and the teamwork between all three were absolutely outstanding.”

Regarding the damage to their patrol boat, McKenzie noted it was minor.

“We have some dents in the props and a small fiberglass repair at the bottom,” he said. “These issues are already being addressed, and we should be operational again in a few days.”

Efforts underway to remove a dinner cruise yacht ran aground off Maui coast

yacht ran aground indonesia

Efforts to defuel a luxury tour yacht that ran aground in shallow waters off Lahaina, Hawaii , last week are underway.

The Maui Princess, a 100-foot passenger vessel widely popular for its sunset dinner cruises around Maui, broke free from its mooring farther offshore on Thursday after “a part reportedly failed,” according to a news release by the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). The ship drifted closer to shore and ended up stuck on “a shallow shelf of sand and rubble.”

The incident did not cause any injuries.

What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

Maui Princess owner David Jung hired Willoughby Consulting and Adjusting to lead the defueling effort. The company started removing the ship’s 2,500 gallons of fuel, batteries, hazardous materials and other items on Monday afternoon.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

The release said the process is expected to take several days and involve up to 10 helicopter trips to remove the majority of the fuel.

“This is pretty calm compared to the stuff I’ve done in the past,” David Willoughby from Willoughby Consulting and Adjusting said in a transcription from Monday.

Jung did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment but told local media outlet KITV 4 Island News on Friday that the grounding was an accident.

Since the Maui wildfires destroyed Lahaina Harbor last August, the boat has paused all commercial operations and struggled to find a location to be permanently docked.

The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources is “providing expertise and guidance for the removal operation to minimize any additional impacts to important hard substrate and living corals in the area.” Aquatic biologists have been unable to assess possible damage to marine life due to high surf along the West Maui coastline.

After the defueling, a salvage contractor will move the boat into deeper water during high tide.

Last February, a different private luxury yacht ran aground off the northern coast of Maui. The vessel leaked fuel into the ocean and damaged coral and live rocks.

Sadly, another case of reckless endangerment on the high seas especially at night……..upon a conviction boat should be seized by authorities and converted for patrol or auctioned off with proceeds going to a drunk driving cause. Set a strong example to others !
