Over 20 percent of part-time residents originally join as non-residents and upgrade to resident full membership once they move to the Northern Neck full-time so they can enjoy the amenities and friendships more fully.

To make it easier to get a sense of the club, Indian Creek offers day memberships that allow guests to partake of all its facilities to help them decide for themselves.

You could say the Skipjack was a game-changer.

It was back in 2015 that Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club member Jones Felvey made an observation. Not only did the club’s bar feel dark, unwelcoming and dated to him, but members weren’t allowed to wear jeans there. 

Rather than just complain, Felvey put his money where his mouth was, offering to match club funding dollar for dollar to renovate the space into one that was more welcoming, more casual and more befitting the members’ Northern Neck lifestyle. No longer were reservations required at the new 

Skipjack Bar and, in a nod to 21st century mores, jeans were perfectly acceptable.

That, it turned out, was just the beginning. “The Skipjack spearheaded a renewed interest in the club,” says membership services director Megan Stephens. “Once it was finished, it changed the membership trend and we’ve had nothing but positive growth and enthusiasm since.”

Last summer, the Club opened the Willow Oaks Terrace, an al fresco dining patio with a fire pit and seating for 48 under a ceiling fan-studded pergola with a view of the night sky. Its outdoor kitchen boasts an open air outdoor kitchen where the Clubs Chef and Culinary team be interactive with members and cook a variety of menu items. The picturesque terrace overlooks the putting green, recently increased to twice its original size and is also used for the occasional croquet match.

“Our goal is to attract new members and stay relevant to current members,” Stephens explains. “Most of our members are forward-looking and the trend in clubs is for diverse dining. 

People don’t want to eat at the same place twice a week, so the more options we have in dining menus, the better.” Besides the Skipjack, the club has fine dining in the Grill Room, a seasonal pool-side menu and banquet facilities for seated groups of up to 250.

Although the golf course is a club’s main asset, it’s far from Indian Creek’s defining feature. With 585 memberships—roughly 1,000 people—only a third are golfers. Proof, Stephens says, that socializing and dining are the main attractions.  

The club hosts a variety of events such as a Memorial Day concert, Christmas celebrations, visits with the Easter bunny, an Independence Day party and a boat parade. One of the most popular is a dinner speaker series that pulls from the surprisingly rich pool of members who’ve had careers worth sharing in the military, government and diplomatic corps.

When rebranding after all the renovations, the club positioned itself as a place where lifelong friendships begin. Over 20 percent of part-time residents originally join as non-residents and upgrade to resident full membership once they move to the Northern Neck full-time so they can enjoy the amenities and friendships more fully. 

The mission for the club isn’t to cater to 20-year-olds or 80-year-olds, but to make the club as welcoming as possible. 

With the boating industry in its seventh consecutive year of growth and Indian Creek’s marina providing easy access to the Chesapeake Bay, the 35-slip marina plays host to members’ boats long term, as well as those who boat over for the day. “If you live down Fleet’s Point Road, it’s quicker to come by boat than car,” Stephens laughs.

Non-boaters can make new friends at the pool or on the outdoor and indoor tennis courts, the latter also being used for the growing sport of pickleball. People quickly learn that ICYCC is not the blue blazer concept of a yacht club.

To make it easier to get a sense of the club, Indian Creek offers day memberships that allow guests to partake of all its facilities to help them decide for themselves. 

Once they’ve joined, members have the option to become part of the club’s committees, all of which are comprised of volunteers, as a means of spending time with others who have the same interests or background. The planning committee is dedicated to the club’s five-year plan which is ambitious yet realistic. Their goals include adding a fitness center, an indoor/outdoor golf practice facility, a dedicated pickleball court and many more items. Because, everyone agrees, a club can never have too many dining choices.

One of the most appetizing places members can meet friends old and new is at one of the club’s restaurants, where the Chef’s big city and boutique dining expertise benefits everyone who sits down at one of his tables. 

 With an abundance of seafood at our back door, ICYCC has little need to fly in fresh fish or oysters. Also near the kitchen 

door is a mature stand of fig trees that provided over 200 pounds of fresh figs last year.  The culinary team wastes no time in putting in a kitchen garden supplied with herbs, tomatoes, eggplant, and more, all of which wound up on the menu.

Improved amenities, a waterfront view and a first class chef putting out multiple menus. Welcome to Indian Creek Country and Yacht Club, a place full of quintessential Northern Neck charm.

“A member came up and told me he was playing the third hole when he heard an osprey overhead,” Stephens shares. “He looked up just as the osprey dropped a rockfish at his feet.”

Just for the record, it did not end up on the menu.

I have heard from several members who have begun the vaccination process, but more so, spring is right around the corner and with it, brings more of an opportunity to utilize the club as the outdoor venues become more attractive when the weather cooperates! To add to the optimism, the Club continues to make progress in many areas. By the publishing of this Smoke Signals, we will have launched our redesigned website as part of our enhanced digital marketing efforts. And if you haven’t already done so, please download the app which places the ability to make a dinner reservation, reserve a court, make a tee time or order food to-go, among other capabilities in the palm of your hand.

In addition to our digital enhancements, we are looking forward to the unveiling of the Clubhouse Renovation at the end of March. The design team and contractors continue to work in a timely fashion to improve the aesthetics of the dining room spaces. “The weather outside is frightful”….too bad that old song is so accurate. If puzzles, cards, TV binging, and reading have all become screamingly boring I have a great idea for you. Try birding. This is a wonderful time of year to give it a try. The leaves are off the trees and you can do it from the warmth of your home, coffee in hand. It can be very exciting! I just got a life bird for me yesterday during the Great Backyard Bird Count - a horned lark. You may think of it as a nerdy pastime but it is becoming scientifically very important. You share your sightings with Audubon or Cornell Lab and they compile all the data from maround the world to monitor migrations, populations, food availability and habitat destruction. You can do this totally on your own from inside or from wandering around your neighborhood, or local park. Whenever we get over covid there are groups and organized bird walks with experts to help you learn. I have met some wonderful people this way. You can also participate in Audubon and Cornell counts during the year. We just finished two counts this past month. One was a waterfowl count sponsored by Northern Virginia Audubon and Northern Neck Audubon societies. A number of ICYCC members helped me count rapters, waterbirds and ducks all over Lancaster County. This past weekend was the Great Backyard Bird Count sponsored by Cornell Ornithology Lab. If you haven’t checked out www.birds.cornell.edu or ebird.org sites they are full of wonderful free information and birding apps (Merlin and ebird) Counts go on all year. Below are several you can get involved in if you wish or just enjoy our wonderful area we live in that is full of beautiful birds on your own: ebird, project feeder watch, Christmas Bird Count, Breeding Bird Survey, Shorebird survey, Waterfowl Count.

Employee of the Month: GLENN DAMERON Glenn started his ICYCC career back in 2001 as a groundskeeper then left in 2006 to pursue other career opportunities, only to return to his role at ICYCC in 2017. Glenn quickly worked his way from groundskeeper to equipment operator. He enjoys working with all departments of ICYCC to maintain and improve the aesthetics and safety of the ICYCC campus. Some items Glenn has been focusing on recently are: pressure washing the indoor tennis court facility, marina bathhouse and Willow Oaks Terrace, and keeping up with the course and grounds maintenance tasks. Outside of ICYCC, Glenn enjoys spending his time with family, watching, and playing sports like football and basketball. In addition to Glenn's great work ethic, he has a positive and upbeat attitude and is willing to help those in need. He is fully deserving of this acknowledgment. Thank you, Glenn!

Well, it seems as though Winter has firmly arrived. I hope all are well and I wanted to take a moment to share what’s been happening in the dining world at ICYCC. As many of you are aware, the Clubhouse and some of its food and beverage venues are in the middle of a renovation. We are very excited about the choices and variety of dining experiences we will be able to present to you once we reopen. While we patiently wait to be handed the keys to the new dining kingdom, the staff has been training vigorously to be ready to serve you. I believe the staff at ICYCC are among the finest member-service employees anywhere in the area and they continue to work tirelessly on providing the best member experience they possibly can. As a commitment to our team, and to assist them during this period, ICYCC members have been very giving and have made it possible for them to not only stay with us but grow with us. Our hope is that their appreciation is being shown by way of their service to you. Recently, we extended the 18% gratuity to both the Take Out and Pantry service. This was done in an effort to better align with current club policies and rules in place. The staff is involved behind the scenes in many parts of these two services and the topic of gratuities is on the agenda for the upcoming Food and Beverage Committee meeting. Our goal is to do what we can to retain these great team members while we await the return of large gatherings, club events, weddings and the ability to serve a full restaurant. March promises to bring better weather and exciting Member events. Look forward to participating in gatherings like Friday Fish Fry’s, St. Patrick’s Day and our Eastern European wine event. Shhh! I'm Sharing The Secret to Success! By Megan Stephens, Membership Director

Spoiler Alert - Sharing IS the secret to success. But what defines success? In the club world, success can be measured 100 different ways, but I am going to focus on two of the most common ways, which are: The total number of members and the total dollars in dues collected each year. How much a member uses the club is another key indicator, but I'll save that one for next month! First, a little empowerment, after all, you are powerful, beautiful and brilliant and I believe in you! At the Club, YOU have the power to influence each of the essential measures mentioned above. YOU have the power and ability to grow our membership base. YOU have the ability to influence the club's financial situation. YOU can influence what the club changes for its monthly dues each year. Wait! You might be wondering if you don't serve on the finance committee or board, how can you influence the dues rates? Recruiting new members! Did you know that if we had 40 additional full members, that we could not only hold dues flat from year-to-year but very likely decrease dues? It's true. Ok, I'm exaggerating a little, the math actually worked out to be an additional 37.6 members, which makes our goal that much easier! Going back to the sharing concept, have you ever heard the expression “Neighbors by chance, friends by choice”? With so many changes in homeownership around the Northern Neck, it’s likely that many of us have a new neighbor (in some cases two or three new neighbors!). Now, it is up to us to choose we embrace them. Pandemic or not, the very least we can do is introduce ourselves to our new neighbors and let them know we are glad they are here. We can take it a step further to share with them what we think makes this close-knit northern neck community so special. And if you want to really make a great first impression, tell them about the club as a way to meet new people, have a great meal or just play around. After all, whether you share your time between here and somewhere else, you’ve just moved your family here and are looking for something to do, you are making plans to retire in the next few years or you have already retired, chances are you’ve made a home here hoping to work a little less and play a little more.

Commodore's Corner

by Bob Wayland, Commodore Ahoy There! After a soggy and chilly January, it was not welcome news that Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter on February 2. However, seeing the daffodil leaves poke to the surface and spotting some early arriving ospreys on the Northern Neck is most welcome. And the number of us and our neighbors who are getting COVID vaccines, while slower than we would wish, gives us another cause for optimism. We pushed our season of in-person events and cruises back a few months in hopes that we would be able to gather safely for parties and cruises. As this Smoke Signals arrives, you should be seeing a full schedule of Yacht Club 2021 activities, but I'll highlight some of the fun that will take place early in the season here. Our Sock Burning will coincide with Cinco De Mayo, so there may be tequila as well as brandy and Irish Coffee, in the offing. And if it's safe, we may burn masks as well as socks! The Flag Raising will take place at the start of the shakedown cruise - to Gilligan’s Island (Indian Creek’s docks) - on June 4-6. In 2021, the Spring Fling becomes a Summer Soiree, with dancing under the stars (or tent), on June 30. Vice Commodore George Fentress, Rear Commodore Brian Clarke, and Fleet Captain Randy Graham are planning how we will realize our motto for the year, Fun in ’21! Hosting visiting Yacht Clubs at Indian Creek lets us show off our fine facilities and some visiting yacht clubs, like the ospreys, enjoy visiting us every year. These visitors bring thousands of dollars in revenue to the Club, from transient dock fees, meals and beverages in our dining facilities, and fees for golf and racquet sports. When you see them on campus, please give a warm welcome to visitors from: Solomon's Island Yacht Club, Brotherhood of the Coast, Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, and the Chesapeake Bay Grand Banks Owners Association who are arranging their visits with Port Captain John Upshur. With the improving COVID situation, we expect several more groups to be booking visits. Fair winds!

June 26 Summer Soiree – A Flip-Flop Hop under the stars with good friends, great food, and dancing to a live band!

Golf by Mike Mayer, PGA

Beginner Golf Opportunity! Come join Brenda Mayer, PGA and our beginner golf group playing holes as short par 4’s at 3:30 on Tuesdays. The holes will be played shorter and its a par 4 on every hole. The only fee is the 9-hole cart fee, if you use one, walking is encouraged. Participants learn how to swing, etiquette, rules, the need for a good short game, and how to feel comfortable on the course. Classes will start in March at 3:30 p.m. with a brief clinic before play on good weather days. Please sign up online or let the Pro Shop know if you are attending so that we will have the carts ready. Play ends at 6:00 p.m. with a few beverages to follow, for anyone interested. Come when you can throughout the season. Brenda will put you on a mailing list if you are interested and send out reminders when the weather looks good. This is a great way to try out the game and get to know lots of really nice folks.

The PGA Junior League is a nationwide initiative to Grow the Game of golf. Last year 30,000 kids participated all across the U.S. Our local PGA section was the second highest in participation. Indian Creek had two teams. One team age 13 and under, and one team of 14-17 years of age. The 13U team included: Izzy Dew, Tyler Brent, Logan Brent, Nolan Pittman, Porter Pittman, Alex Fulmer, and Brooks Reuwers

The 17U team included: Leyton Dew, Claire Beitel, Spencer Cammarata, and Andrew Fulmer Practice is held once a week beginning in April for each age division and we have matches with Hobbs Hole and Quinton Oaks. The format is a 9-hole Captain’s Choice. The juniors get home and away team shirts, hats, tote bags, and bag tag. It has been amazing to watch these young players improve and enjoy the social aspect of golf. The league is for ICYCC members, but it is also open to the public. Sign up is available open now online. More About Golf Polar Par 3

On Saturday, February 6, we hosted a Polar Par 3 Golf Tournament. As it turned out it wasn’t very polar at all with temperatures above 50 degrees, but very memorable with 36 players coming out in the middle of the winter. The competition was close as three teams tied for first, finishing at eight-under par 46. The playoff was settled using the back nine score, last six on the back nine, and then the last three on the back nine. The last Polar Par 3 Scramble was so much fun, we’re doing it again. Join us on March 3 at 10:00 as we once again play all 18 holes from our family tees. Turf Talk by Pete Stephens, CGCS I have always considered winter a time to not only shift our focus to projects, but also reflect on our strengths and weaknesses over the past year. We take stock of our resources, identify where improvements are needed, and expand on areas where past improvements may have worked well. This past year, COVID-19 may have brought its own unique challenges, but many of our processes remain the same as any other year. We will continue to focus on not only education but making as many improvements, as we can, within our available resources. All we need is Mother Nature’s cooperation in this effort. This is also the season where the team spends time educating ourselves on new golf maintenance procedures, reviewing SOP’, reviewing equipment operation and safety, chemical and pesticide safety, proper handling and usage techniques, new laws, and regulations, etc. This year, the annual GCSAA educational conference and Golf Industry Show opened the opportunity for virtual learning for the entire course and grounds team. We listened to keynote speakers present innovative ideas, expanded research efforts, learned about new and upcoming products, and maintenance equipment techniques that can help us do our jobs better and more efficiently in 2022. Some takeaways we have from the virtual classes were: Bunker sand selection, renovation, and maintenance Irrigation head troubleshooting Pesticide applications and certificate training Plant and Soil Health Supplements covering products from the past, present and what to look forward to in the future Advanced weed control on putting greens for control of poa annua, crabgrass and goosegrass The course and grounds team have also busy with storm cleanup, repairing blue bird houses, and giving the water cooler houses a new look with a much-needed facelift. The coolers will give a much cleaner appearance this season with a new color, siding, and roof.

We have tried to take full advantage of the one or two weeks of dry weather this season to apply a post-emergent herbicide to areas any weed-infested areas throughout the campus. We have been working on cleaning up the course, which is ongoing especially with spouts of not only rain but winter weather events. As soon as we hit another dry spell, we will apply pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass and goosegrass control. Have a great March and we look forward to seeing everyone at the club and on the course!

Is Indian Creek Island too expensive for Don Shula?

The official seal of Indian Creek Village depicts a closed front gate. That's all the chic North Miami-Dade island's 33 multimillionaire residents want you to know. You're not welcome.

So it was illuminating to attend a rare gathering last Tuesday of some residents, who include auto mogul Norman Braman, financier Carl Icahn, and former Dolphins coach Don Shula. The event: a village council meeting about a proposed new levy for the town country club.

There was the stately Mary Anne Shula, Don's wife, earnestly pleading poverty. "My husband is 80 years old... He's on the back nine of his life. Don is unable to do talks and signings like he used to. If our taxes go up, he'll suffer... What gives you the right to do this?"

What was the financial hit to the Shulas, who live in a $4.14 million, 13,300-square-foot, white-columned mansion? $3,427.

"Maybe they have serious financial trouble," village attorney Stephen Helfman says. "I was frankly surprised that she was objecting."

Later in the meeting, Miami's recently ousted police chief, John Timoney, testified as an expert. Then former U.S. Sen. George Smathers's widow, Carolyn, tearfully pleaded for the long-battling country club and village council to "learn to get along." But in the end, the council approved the new tax anyway.

Don Shula's caddy-tip fund is just one unintended casualty of the shank-to-the-side of the notoriously exclusive Indian Creek Country Club. The vote will increase the amount that club members pay toward Indian Creek's ten-officer police force by nearly 30 times, from $29,819 to $842,315 annually.

The club's racist past has made it toxic. To this day, it has permitted only a handful of Jews and blacks into its ranks. As a result of the restrictive policies, it's been boycotted by the Orange Bowl Committee and former Gov. Jeb Bush.

The village, meanwhile, has been home to tough Jewish Americans such as car magnate Braman, financier Icahn, and hip-hop producer Scott Storch. Four of the five council members are Jewish.

Last Tuesday's decision was sweet payback for some villagers. But it's not over. The decision will likely be challenged in court. The "absurd" assessment will "only result in high legal fees and the real possibility of judgments borne by the village residents," club spokesperson Bruce Rubin says. He also insists that its discriminatory reputation "isn't true. The club in no way has any of those archaic policies."

Indian Creek Village was founded on the lofty ideal that rich people need not share streets with the huddled masses. In 1939, the 660-acre man-made island just south of the 123rd Street Causeway — winter haven to FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and the Woolworth family — incorporated to evade annexation by Surfside.

From the beginning, the village and the club, a Mediterranean-style golfer's paradise built in 1930, were uneasily conjoined. The club never rushed to accept villagers into its ranks. The rift grew deeper as the village grew more Jewish and the country club's membership policies became more outdated.

For 25 years, the Orange Bowl Committee held its annual soiree at the Indian Creek club, which then allowed Jews and blacks on its grounds only as party guests. In 1986, the bowl committee buckled to pressure from county officials and found less toxic gala grounds.

In 1999, then-Indian Creek Village Mayor Leonard Miller, who was Jewish, refused to meet Bill Clinton after the president golfed at the controversial club. "It's embarrassing to live here and have to explain why I'm not a member of the club," Miller told the Miami Herald . A year later, Governor Bush didn't make the same public relations mistake: After speaking with Miller, he cancelled plans to tee off.

To join the club, candidates must be recommended by at least one current member and approved by 75 percent of the 15-man board of directors. The initiation charge is $125,000, plus $10,000 in annual dues. Though rolls are carefully guarded, New Times has learned its members include former Ambassador to Belgium Paul Cejas, tennis Hall of Famer Butch Buchholz, crooner Julio Iglesias, farming magnate and philanthropist Paul J. DiMare, auto dealer Gus Machado, and University of Miami Board of Trustees chairman Dr. Philip George. Village attorney Helfman estimates "eight or nine" residents are also members of the club, including Cejas and Icahn, one of the few Jews who have penetrated its ranks.

For decades, Helfman says, club members dominated the village council and made its rules. Like everybody else, residents paid village property taxes based on their home values. (Last year, for instance, totals ranged from $9,219 for the island's least valuable house, worth $1.7 million, to the $85,705 paid by Cejas for his 18,000-square-foot manse. The country club, with its property valued at $5.6 million, paid just less than $30,000 to the village annually.)

But by 2008, the village council was full of non-club members. At least two of the current councilmen, bank executive Javier Holtz and physician Scott Segal, applied for membership to the club but were denied.

With consultants' help, the council crafted a plan to exponentially increase the club's tax. To do it under Florida law, they had to reclassify the Indian Creek Village Police force as a "security service." Residents would save as much as $60,000 less in property taxes a year. Only four, including the Shulas, would have to pay a few thousand more.

At the jammed May 20 meeting about the tax, high-priced club lawyers lobbied indignantly as commissioners yawned and stared at the ceiling. Lead club attorney Bill Spencer declared, "This is the first time that something like this has ever been attempted by any government."

Among the three experts who spoke in the club's defense was Timoney, who appeared in a John Gotti-esque gray pinstriped suit and argued that Indian Creek cops are far more than butlers with badges. "Make no mistake about it, this is a full-fledged police department," he asserted, describing how in a recent ride-along, the island officers had found a golf shack unlocked: "That's traditional police work."

But club representatives were overruled by villagers, including Braman, who said the assessment was "about fairness."

"It may well be that we have to be at the Supreme Court," Councilman Holtz said as the ordinance was approved, "but the residents have spoken."

Carolyn Smathers sobbed at the result: "The island and the club are like a married couple who no longer love each other. But it's too expensive to get a divorce."
