Ten of the best disaster movies set at sea

Since those huge white letters were first hoisted up that hill, Hollywood has had an obsession with maritime disaster - and the new trailer for Craig Gillespie's The Finest Hours  looks to set to continue the damp craze.

The latest in a long list of danger-at-sea films, it tells the true story of the perilous 1952 rescue mission by the US Coastguard that saved dozens of lives.

Boasting impressive oceanic effects and suitably emotional dialogue, the Chris Pine-starring drama looks set to make waves at the cinema come 2016.

But The Finest Hours is just the latest in a wave (sorry) of films about beleaguered ship captains battling the elements, especially with the advent of realistic CGI giving directors the ability to cook up the perfect storm.

So how does it contend with the others? Let's have a look...

The Perfect Storm

Storm movies don't get more perfect than this. Based upon real events that saw the loss of a fishing boat and its entire crew in the so-called 'Perfect Storm' of 1991, this film doesn't pull any punches with its depiction of the crew's hopeless last hours inside the hurricane. 

Worth watching alone for that shot of the film's climactic wave.

Not a disaster movie  per se , but  Life of Pi 's defining moment is certainly the breathtaking shipwreck that sees the titular orphan stranded at sea with nothing for company but a hungry tiger.

At least the Germans seem to agree - the official German title of the film is Schiffbruch mit Tiger,  or "Shipwreck With Tiger".

The Poseidon Adventure

Long before 2006's lukewarm remake,  The Poseidon Adventure  had reigned supreme as the king of all shipwreck movies. After the cruise liner he is on is overturned by a rogue wave, unconvincing vicar Gene Hackman has to save the passengers from certain death.

One of the classic all-star disaster movies that boast the likes of  Earthquake  and  The Towering Inferno ,  The Poseidon Adventure  makes up for what it lacks in Oscar material with hammy dialogue and painfully dated special effects.

It goes without saying that the, well, titanic scale of this film is something that Hollywood has been trying to top ever since.

Still the 2nd highest-grossing movie of all time, this seabound-romance-cum-disaster-epic is also the 2nd ever film we cried at - after  Air Bud 2.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Before he butchered his credibility (and our ears) in  Les Miserables , Russell Crowe was a certified badass - just take a look at his pistol-toting captain in  Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Crowe, somewhat unsurprisingly, plays both master and commander of a British warship during the Napoleonic wars - cue blasting cannons, raging storms and the most knuckle-biting amputation scene ever committed to the silver screen.

All is Lost

Featuring only one cast member,  All Is Lost  sees Robert Redford's yacht captain faring a one-man battle against a tropical storm.

It's a testament to Robert Redford that he can play an old lonely man in a raincoat, barely saying a word, and still be effortlessly cool.

K-19: The Widowmaker

With all the real-life tragedies at sea, it makes one wonder why we don't just stay on land. Harrison Ford stars as captain of the doomed submarine K-19, struggling to keep his crew alive after a radiation leak.

The film's title has been criticised, as the nickname 'Widowmaker' was actually dreamt up by movie execs and never used in real life. A producer has been since quoted as saying it was "one of their biggest mistakes".

White Squall

Another true story,  White Squall  follows a group of students and their captain as they battle the meteorological anomaly of the title, which is said to generate waves 20 feet high.

Although the tale it is based on is pretty impressive,  White Squall  isn't often included on the list of Ridley Scott's best. Mainly because it's quite rubbish.

In the Heart of the Sea

Although it hasn't been released yet,  In The Heart of the Sea  has already impressed us with Ron Howard at the helm and a cast including Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy.

When a whaling ship is set adrift off the coast of New England, it's not just the elements that the crew have to brave - they'll also be facing off against the vengeful whale which inspired Herman Melville's  Moby Dick.  Our money's on the whale.

Of course if you fancy a blast from the past you could root for the original  Moby Dick,  where they decided to dismiss practical effect in favour of murdering real whales.

A brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness, the dark-comedy satire film and Palme d'Or winner from Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund and starring Woody Harrelson , releases. Alongside Harrelson, Triangle of Sadness features a supporting cast that includes Harris Dickinson ( The King's Man ), Charlbi Dean ( Black Lightning ), Vicki Berlin, Zlatko Burić, Oliver Ford Davies, Iris Berben, Dolly de Leon, Sunnyi Melles, and Henrik Dorsin. The story revolves around celebrity model couple Carl (Dickinson) and Yaya (Dean) as they're invited to join a luxury cruise for the extremely wealthy, helmed by an unhinged ship captain. However, things take a turn for the worse when the boat begins to capsize, and the passengers find themselves stranded on an island.

Now, a brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness released by NEON puts the spotlight on the eccentric passengers of the cruise ship and its captain, played by Harrelson. The trailer begins with Carl taking part in an uncomfortable photoshoot before he receives a free invitation to a yacht for the super-rich, where he and his influencer girlfriend Yaya are introduced to their snobby co-passengers and their flashy personalities. As the trailer progresses, what starts as an Instagram-ready adventure takes a dark turn, as a chain of bizarre, gross-out events ultimately conclude with the ship getting capsized. Triangle of Sadness has generated plenty of buzz since its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation. The film marked Östlund's second Palme d'Or win as well, after he first claimed the highly coveted prize for the 2014 drama film The Square, which featured The Handmaid's Tale star Elizabeth Moss and Dominic West. The acclaimed director's films are known for their striking commentary, which challenge social hierarchies, and the above trailer suggests that Triangle of Sadness will be looking to continue that trend. Audiences can check out Triangle of Sadness when the film makes its theatrical debut on October 7.

‘Triangle of Sadness’ Trailer Will Make You Wanna Eat the Rich (and Puke Them Out)

Skip the nachos at the theater if you go see Triangle of Sadness this fall. On Tuesday, Neon released the trailer for the Ruben Östlund-directed film, which had some Cannes viewers walking out of the theater after they watched the snobbiest of snobs doing the most human things: puking and pooping.

The trailer — which opens with twink models giving their best rich and poor brand impressions — gives just a taste (maybe we shouldn’t use that word) of the shenanigans to come on a luxury cruise, where the film is set. The film is a satirical take down on modern capitalism and the one percent.

“The success of a luxury cruise depends on you,” says a supervisor on the cruise as clips of Instagram-ready moments on the boat are shown. “I don’t want to hear anybody say ‘No.’ It’s always ‘Yes sir!’ and ‘Yes ma’am!’ “

Meanwhile, one worker nervously stutters before getting into a hot tub after a rich lady commands her to “enjoy the moment.”  The trailer takes a turn after a different wealthy woman asks the boat’s drunk captain ( Woody Harrelson ) to “clean the sails.” The boat begins to move way too much, causing cruisers to vomit, some to poop, and others to fall down stairs.

The trailer gives a look at the cruisers and the workers stranded on an island as one woman says, “This is really bad. Really, really bad.”

The film took home the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year, making it the Force Majeur director  Östlund’s second movie to earn the title after The Square in 2017. It’s also the third-consecutive film produced by Neon to take home the award.

Box Office Boats: 7 High Grossing Films Featuring a Sinking Ship

Like the car crash or the train wreck, the sinking ship is hard to look away from – which explains why there are so many high grossing films featuring boats that don’t float.

When it comes to movies, people love disasters. Like the train derailment or the fiery car crash, we avidly consume the tragedy of the shipwreck in our pursuit of entertainment. Some of the highest grossing films in Hollywood history involve sinking ships. Here is a list of seven movies featuring sinking ships that are worth a watch this weekend.

1. The Poseidon Adventure

1973 was a great year for terrifying movies; the original Exorcist earned over $413 million, and The Poseidon Adventure was right on its tail. Although this disaster movie was released in 1972, The Poseidon Adventure became one of the highest grossing films of 1973, bringing in a worldwide gross over $125 million.

Based on Paul Gallico’s 1969 novel The Poseidon Adventure , the film is set of the SS Poseidon , a luxury liner making her last trip from New York to Athens before her retirement. Like any good disaster film, the movie opens with an introduction of each character and their reason for taking this life-changing trip. But The Poseidon Adventure doesn’t truly begin until an underwater earthquake sets off a tsunami that capsizes the ship on New Year’s Eve. The now upside-down SS Poseidon has transformed from a lush paradise to an unbearable hell. Its survivors, living in the air pockets formed during the ship’s descent, must find a way to escape their predicaments. A group of 10 people, led by Reverend Frank Scott (Gene Hackman), break off from the larger group, who wait like sitting ducks to be saved. The small group must work together to figure their way up and out of the boat, but will they survive or will their decision to leave end in their demise?

A massive tidal wave hits the SS Poseidon (Uploaded to YouTube by Movieclips)

The gripping movie, which has been compared to Airport (1970) and Earthquake (1974) – I would even throw Snakes on a Plane (2006) to this list — has won two Academy Awards, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award. Its sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (also based on Paul Gallico’s novel of the same name), was released in 1979. However, the sequel never hit the level of popularity achieved by the original Poseidon Adventure , only grossing $2.1 million.

2. Das Boot

Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s novel Das Boot , originally published in 1973, is based on his experiences serving on a German submarine during the Battle of the Atlantic (World War II). The novel was adapted into a film by the same name, and Das Boot was released in German cinemas in 1981. An English-dubbed version was released by Columbia Pictures, although it didn’t do as well in box office sales as its German counterpart. However, Das Boot , directly translating to “The Boat,” cumulatively grossed over $228 million in the U.S. and in international markets.

Like most war movies, Das Boot centers around tragedy. In the dangerous waters of the Atlantic during the Second World War, the German submarine U-96 , the vessel on which the movie takes place, is on patrol. Most of the time the crew is bored and restless, until their excitement heightens when they spot enemy convoys. The crew is successful, and the vessel only sustains minor damages in many of these violent encounters. The men aboard U-96 find their luck is changed when they are suddenly attacked by a British fighter plane, the submarine suffering heavy damages in the bombardment. The U-96 is forced to dive, but when the boat fails to respond as the crew attempts to level her off, the men find themselves trapped underwater and running out of air. As they frantically work to repair U-96 , the audience is left wondering: Will they make it to the surface in time? And, even then, can they sneak around their enemies and make it home?

3. Pearl Harbor

Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor (2001) is one of the highest grossing war films in the world. Up there with Saving Private Ryan ($482.3 million) and Dunkirk ($527 million), Pearl Harbor grossed $449.2 million. The movie portrays the attack on USS Oklahoma and USS Arizona on December 7, 1941.

Opening in 1923 Tennessee, we are introduced to the film’s main characters, childhood best friends Danny Walker and Rafe McCawley, in their youth. But soon we find Danny and Rafe (and ourselves) launched 18 years into the future: January 1941. The young boys who played war together in an old biplane at the beginning of the movie are now men fighting in a real war, on real fighter planes.

As the Imperial Japanese Navy begins their attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Danny and Rafe fight together against enemy planes and work to save the crews of the capsized Oklahoma and the swiftly sinking Arizona . Although both Danny and Rafe survive the attack, the war isn’t over (and neither is the movie). Can both friends continue to survive the raging world war? Or will their luck run out?

Pearl Harbor is a dynamic film that explores themes such as love and hate, loyalty and betrayal during wartime. And with a cast of A-list actors, Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Alec Baldwin (to name a few), it’s plain to see why the film was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Best Sound Editing. Pearl Harbor wasn’t received with open arms by everyone. Outside of the Academy, the movie was also nominated for six Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture. It’s the first (and only) film in Hollywood history to be nominated for Worst Picture that had also won an Academy Award.

Based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel and inspired by a real-life series of shark attacks on the New Jersey coastline in 1916, Jaws opens with a shark attack – it is night; two drunken young adults stumble towards the water for a late night skinny dip; the woman makes it to the water; the man does not; her half eaten body washes up on shore the next day; and the struggle between Amity Island and the Great White who terrorizes it begins. The killer lacks mercy, lacks bias, chowing down on men, women, and children alike. Yet, despite this ever-present threat and its determination to remain as a threat, the town refuses to close the beaches or warn vacationers of what lurks under the murky Atlantic waters.

The only town official interested in protecting the beachgoers is Amity’s chief of police Martin Brody, who, along with marine biologist Matt Hooper and professional shark hunter Quint, sets of to defeat the shark and end its reign of terror. Out on the ocean, the small crew hunt the fish using spears, harpoons, and guns. Perhaps it’s the team’s lack of unity, or perhaps it’s the shark’s sheer strength and will, that places the ragamuffin crew on a sinking boat, both literally and metaphorically. As the vessel slowly descends, destroying the boundaries that separate man from fish, you find yourself seized by terror as you question whether or not Brody can kill the shark before he finds himself in the water, at its mercy.

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was not an easy production. It ran into a variety of hurdles that put the film over budget and knocked it off its schedule. To begin, producers wanted to train a great white shark for the part of Jaws, but finding that to be a seemingly impossible task, the film employed three pneumatically powered prop sharks, nicknamed “Bruce,” as their bloodthirsty villain. Jaws was also the first movie to be filmed on the ocean, which presented troubleshooting issues and jacked the film’s budget up $5 million. But it was all worth it. Jaws grossed $470.1 million in box office sales, making it the highest grossing movie of 1975. The film was developed into three sequels and is preserved by the Library of Congress in the U.S. National Film Registry – along with Titanic , the only other movie on this list to be selected for preservation.

Inspired by actual accounts of the sinking Titanic , which fell to the sea on April 14, 1912, the film was an ultimate success. And on March 1, 1998, Titanic became the first movie to gross over $1 billion in Hollywood history, hitting $2.202 billion in box office sales.

Opening 84 years after the tragedy, Titanic begins on a different boat: the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh , a research vessel exploring the Titanic wreck in search of a large diamond necklace called the Heart of the Ocean. Similar to Pearl Harbor , the audience is launched through time and space, except this time we are moving backward into the past.

Now in Southampton in 1912, we follow 17-year-old Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), her mother, and her fiancé Caledon “Cal” Hockley as they board the RMS Titanic . On board, she meets Jack Dawson, a poor artist who won his voyage on the RMS Titanic in a poker game, and the two fall in love. Their love story is a classic, featuring all the best attributes of the genre: a scorned, vengeful lover; a domineering mother; class relations; and of course tragedy. The hardest part of watching Titanic , of watching this love story, is the suspense –knowing the tragedy will soon strike, but not knowing how it will affect their love. Will it overcome?

While it may seem unlikely to see the Frozen franchise on this list, tragedy is not uncommon in Disney films, and this particular tragedy starts with a shipwreck.

In the Frozen franchise, including Frozen ($1.26 billion) and Frozen II ($1.45 billion), which collectively garnered $2.71 billion in box office sales, Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, two royal sisters) share a similar origin story to that of other Disney protagonists: the tragic loss of one parent (usually the mother) or both parents. In Frozen , Anna and Elsa lose their parents to a shipwreck in the Dark Sea, a plot point that is introduced in the first movie and more fully fleshed out in the sequel. Their death places Elsa as ruler of the Kingdom of Arendelle, but pressures to hide her power over snow and cold from her citizenry send Elsa into an anxious frenzy that traps Arendelle in a seemingly endless snow fall. It is up to Anna and the friends she meets along the way to find Elsa and thaw the kingdom. But can Anna convince Elsa to return to the community that she once had to hide from?

7. Pirates of the Caribbean

Admittedly, only two of the six Pirates of the Caribbean films hit noteworthy financial milestones. In 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest earned the title of the highest grossing film of the year at $1.06 billion in box office sales. And in two years in a row (2007 and 2008), the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was the highest grossing film of the year with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End at $963.4 million.

Beginning with the franchise’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), which is set in the 1720s, in Port Royal, Jamaica, the movie opens to a sinking ship and a young boy, Will Turner, who lies adrift in the water. Spotted by Elizabeth Swan, a young girl of the same age, he is pulled aboard a British ship transporting colonists to their new home in the Americas. Elizabeth spots a gold pirate medallion around Will’s neck, and thinking him a pirate (a crime punishable by death) and fearing for his life, she takes the medallion from his neck before he can be discovered. But she doesn’t realize its power.

Flashing forward eight years, we are introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate captain without a ship. Like Will Turner, he makes his debut on a sinking ship. Well, a sinking sailboat that takes on water and slowly sinks as it nears the port. Only the crow’s nest remains above water. He is looking to commandeer ship belonging to the British Royal Navy so he can reclaim the Black Pearl from mutinous Barbosa and his cursed crew.

After Captain Sparrow’s introduction, the narrative shifts back to Elizabeth. With Will’s medallion around her neck, Elizabeth begins to feel very faint from her tight corset and the warm weather and falls into the ocean. Once that medallion makes contact with the water, it releases a siren call to the cursed crew of the Black Pearl , and this is where the adventure begins.

After Port Royal is raided and Elizabeth is kidnapped by the miscreant pirates, Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow team together in search of the Black Pearl . But will their competing goals – Will’s to save Elizabeth, Jack’s to retake his ship and defeat his sworn enemy – complicate their journey? This question persists throughout the franchise until Johnny Depp’s (Captain Jack) departure from Pirates of the Caribbean in 2018 – his last film being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales .

During his time with the franchise, Depp won a dozen awards for his performance as Jack Sparrow, along with award winning actors Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Along with the phenomenal acting, this dynamic franchise featuring love and adventure as seen from the “dark” side (the pirate side) is a great family friendly movie geared for all ages, despite the sinking ships.

Water, water everywhere, and not a damn way to get home. That’s this week’s gallery theme: Movies where we see people trapped on the open seas, inspired by  Adrift , starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as two young lovers whose boat is incapacitated after sailing directly into a catastrophic hurricane (and with Claflin’s character suffering from a life-threatening injury). With awards season in full swing, Christopher Nolan 's epic World War II thriller Dunkirk is racking up critical laurels and awards nominations, including 3 Golden Globes and 8 Critics Choice Awards nominations. So naturally, Warner Bros. is boosting the spotlight for Nolan and the film, which arrived in theaters back in July, making it one of the rare summer film to make its way into the awards race. Good news for us, because we've got some new insight into how Nolan structured his breathless piece of bravura war cinema.

The director spoke to the New York Times for their Anatomy Of A Scene series to discuss one of the film's most intense, pulse-pounding moments that finds the young soldiers of Dunkirk stuck below deck on a navy ship when a torpedo strikes, trapping them in the dark, sinking ship.

"What I was interested in exploring in this scene is based on various first-hand accounts I've read of people who got evacuated onto large naval ships," Nolan explains, "they were put down in the hold to maximise the number of people they could get on one ship. But of course what this means is if the boat was bombed these ships would go down very quickly."

"It's about darkness," the director continues, "that absolute fear and claustrophobic sense of being trapped with hundreds of other people in a dark space rapidly filling with water. In our research, we looked at what happens to a navy vessel that's torpedoed and it goes down very very quickly, there's very little time to think."

Nolan also talks a bit about shooting the sequence practically, in-camera."To shoot this we shot some of it on-board a real destroyer off the coast of Dunkirk and then we doubled it with a forced perspective set we built in a tank so that we could roll it over into the water. The actors performed all their own stunt-work and water-work on the rolling ship." Watch Nolan's full explanation in the video below.

The odds of surviving 13 classic 'lost at sea' movies

And by that I mean, my odds of surviving.

Adrift (2018)

Shailene Woodley plays the real-life survivor Tami Oldham who got caught in a hurricane and had to sail on her own towards Hawai'i with a broken boat. In honor of her heroism and harrowing story, I tried to put myself in her terrible, waterlogged shoes.

My chance of survival: 2%

First, I know nothing about sailing. Tami had no chance of rescue and needed to sail herself to safety. I would never be able to do that, with or without Sam Claflin as a love interest.

Life of Pi (2012)

My chance of survival: 20%

If I remember correctly, Pi survives mainly by cowering in a minature raft he floats on to hide from the tiger. I am better at hiding than I am at sailing. But still, I get very hungry.

The Deep (2012)

My chance of survival: 1%

This Icelandic movie is based on a true story about a fisherman who survived in the freezing ocean after his boat capsized. I am always cold, even in my office. I would be very bad at this.

The Finest Hours (2016)

My chance of survival: 80%

This is a movie about a Coast Guard rescue mission. And a historically successful one! I can be rescued by Chris Pine.

The Deep (1977)

My chance of survival: 0%

I do not know how to scuba dive and also I am very scared of it, and so I would immediately panic and breath too much or too little and screw up my lungs in the way that you're not supposed to when you're scuba diving.

The Disappeared (2012)

My chance of survival: 30%

Because htis film is about six men stranded after their fishing boat sinks, I feel like I could survive just by following directions and hoping no one eats me.

Open Water (2003)

See my earlier answer about scuba diving, and then throw in sharks.

The Reef (2010)

I'm not a terrible swimmer, and even though sharks are super scary, statistically, they probably won't eat me. So if I could stick to the group and make it to a shallow section of the reef where I could stand, I could probably wait it out until I was rescued by a fishing boat.

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

My chance of survival: 25%

Again, I'm basing my odds here on not having to rely on any of my own boat knowledge. If I make it out of this one, it's mostly luck.

All Is Lost (2013)

My chance of survival: 10%

Look, I'll say again: I don't know how to sail. But Robert Redford only had a shot at making it out if he was rescued, and I'm banking on those odds.

Titanic (1997)

My chance of survival: 85%

Women and children first, people. Since I almost certainly wouldn't fall in love with a rougish third-class artist, I wouldn't jump out of the lifeboat at the last minute in time to push him off a door.

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

My chance of survival: 50%

Whales are scary, and so are shipwrecks, but in this imaginary scenario, I have Chris Hemsworth to help me survive.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Superyacht KISMET gets blown up in '6 Underground' movie

Starring in the biggest Netflix movie to date,  Lurssen ’s 95m/ 312ft motor yacht KISMET plays a central role in new Michael Bay blockbuster '6 Underground'.

With an A-list cast which includes Ryan Reynolds, 6 Underground promises high-speed drama, exhilarating action and a closer look at the world's 57th largest yacht KISMET . 

The yacht is at the centre of some explosive scenes- including one where she gets blown up with the help of CGI software.

Filming for the Netflix movie took place in October 2018, where she was spotted by local residents in Taranto, Italy.  Onlookers gathered along the coast to take in the action as the yacht cruised past accompanied by a filming helicopter.

Directed by the multi-award-winning director Michael Bay and budgeted at $150 million, 6 Underground is Netflix's priciest feature. The movie premiered on the 10th of December in New York, and was then released digitally to Netflix on the 13th. 

The cast is led by Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Reynolds, with support from Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Adria Arjona, and Ben Hardy.

The plot follows six individuals from around the world, each an expert in their field with a skillset and desire to change the future. The team is brought together by a leader known only as One (Ryan Reynolds) whose sole mission in life is to right terrible wrongs by whatever means necessary.

Filming onboard

KISMET was hired for a week during filming and she played host to some of the most exciting and high-action scenes in the movie. 

The movie highlights the glitz and glamour of the superyacht lifestyle, particularly in the party scenes. Plenty of long shots of the yacht's facilities were shot during the day, where her sleek interiors and spacious amenities were showcased.

There are even a few shots of the yacht's foredeck basketball court and and oversized jacuzzi.

A separate set

However, a seperate set was also constructed for a variety of scenes, including the poolside shoot-out. KISMET does not have an aft deck pool, and the seperate set allowed for increased flexibility when shooting.

Director of photography Bojan Baelli informed IBC, an online media news source, that the crew had to be extra cautious when filming the dynamic scenes on board KISMET, stating that “[she] had teak floors which we had to protect in case they burned down”.

Special effects & CGI

Many of the exhilirating aerial shots were taken while the motor yacht was underway in Taranto, then later rendered for the full dramatic effect. 

This is apparent in KISMET's final scenes, where she is blown up and proceeds to sink slowly into the sea. This section of the movie was edited using CGI software.

How much does it cost to rent the 6 Underground movie yacht?

Available for private yacht charters , the cost to experience KISMET starts from €1,200,000 per week plus expenses. Currently, she is based in the Caribbean but will be cruising the Mediterranean for her summer season.

Photos: $1 million luxury sport yacht sinks off Florida coast, 2 rescued

T wo people were rescued just before a million-dollar luxury 80-foot sport yacht sank off the coast of Florida Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The incident was reported just after 11:35 a.m. about 3 miles off St. Augustine Beach, Florida, a news release from the Coast Guard said.

The operator of the Atlantis, an 80-foot sport yacht, said their vessel struck an object in the water and was sinking, officials said.

Coast Guard Station Mayport sent a boat crew to assist. The Coast Guard also coordinated with St. John’s County Fire and Rescue, which soon arrived and plucked both people from the yacht with no injuries.

The Atlantis yacht appears to be a 1999 or early 2000s model of the Sunseeker Predator 80. A larger Sunseeker Predator – with the very unique appearance — was featured in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.

A 2001 Predator that is 5 feet shorter than Atlantis, which sank Saturday, is listed for sale for $975,000.

Sunseeker Predator 80 yacht, built in the United Kingdom, can accommodate up to 6 guests in 4 staterooms, with 2 crew members aboard.

Atlantis has two Caterpillar diesel engines and can reach a top speed of 44 kn or 50 mph, according to data from Boat International.

A data sheet about Atlantis says the vessel is in the top 5 percent by speed in the world.

After Saturday’s rescue, a hazard to navigation was broadcast to alert mariners of the yacht, which could cause damage to other vessels, according to the Coast Guard.

The owner of the Atlantis will arrange for a salvage of the vessel, the Coast Guard said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The US Coast Guard rescued two people this weekend after their luxury sports yacht sank off the Florida coast.

The operator of the Atlantis, an 80-foot yacht. alerted the US Coast Guard on Saturday morning that the boat had struck an object and was taking on water.

The yacht was three miles off the coast of the picturesque city of St Augustine, Florida when the call came in.

Pictures showed the stern of the vessel sinking beneath the waves before it finally tipped into a vertical position and sank further.

St John’s County Fire Department rescued both people on board, according to the US Coast Guard. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

An alert was subsequently issued for nearby mariners about the partially submerged yacht, which was still in the water as of late Monday evening, the US Coast Goard told The Independent .

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. John’s County Fire and Rescue for their invaluable assistance during this case,” Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana, from the US Coast Guard, said in a statement.

“With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it’s imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel.”

“This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises,” he continued.

Sports yachts of a similar size to Atlantis are typically worth upwards of $1m, according to International Yacht Sales .

Earlier this year, a pod of orcas managed to sink a sailing yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar. However, that vessel was much smaller, measuring roughly 50ft.

The March incident was the latest in a string of orca-related yacht sinkings in the region. Marine experts at the time said they believe a subpopulation of about 15 orcas known as “Gladis” is carrying out these attacks.

“What if there were a shark in the Seine?” is, one can only assume, a question that Parisians ponder on a daily basis. It’s also brilliant in its simplicity, if not quite as appealingly silly a high-concept premise as “what if there were snakes on a plane?” and “what if the moon … fell?” Look no further than “ Under Paris ” for an answer to the hypothetical that surely keeps Emmanuel Macron up at night, as Netflix’s new thriller swims rather than sinks as it adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long.

Others include a blood-soaked Sophia emerging from the water after her own close encounter, Lilith sending one of those activists to a watery grave and a sequence set in the Catacombs you’ll have to see to believe. Gens is a visual storyteller first and foremost, which fits the material like a wetsuit. There isn’t any dialogue as instantly quotable as “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” but as a sensory experience, “Under Paris” is never less than seaworthy.

The fact that you can already tell where this is all headed might make you smarter than the fictional mayor, but it’s unlikely to hinder your enjoyment of the inevitable climax. Syfy-esque premise notwithstanding, “Under Paris” (the original title, “Sous la Seine,” is, unsurprisingly, much more pleasing to the ear) is a smart blockbuster that would have been best experienced on the big screen — especially given how anemic the summer box office has been thus far.

If you can resist the joy of Bejo repeatedly declaring “c’est pas possible” upon being confronted with yet another seeming impossibility — such as, oh, the fact that mako sharks don’t live in freshwater — then perhaps your time would be better spent rewatching her Oscar-nominated turn in “The Artist” instead. You’d be missing out, however, as “Under Paris” is so assured in its plotting that it doesn’t even qualify as a guilty pleasure — and, for the record, there is an explanation for Lilith’s unique adaptation.

Few movies deserve the “often imitated, never replicated” designation quite like “Jaws” does, as every truly great shark movie that has followed in its wake can be counted on one hand with a few missing fingers. “Under Paris” might just be the best of them, which isn’t the faint praise it might sound like.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — At least 20 people were killed when a boat sank while crossing a river in eastern Afghanistan Saturday morning, a Taliban official said.

Quraishi Badlon, provincial director of the information and culture department in Nangarhar province, said that the boat sank while crossing a river in Mohmand Dara district, killing 20 people including women and children.

Badlon said that the boat was carrying 25 people, according to village residents, of whom five survived.

So far five bodies have been retrieved including a man, a woman, two boys and a girl, said the Nangarhar health department in a statement. It added that a medical team and ambulances were sent to the area.

The officials didn’t provide details on the cause of the accident and said that rescuers are still searching for other bodies.

Residents of the area frequently use locally made boats to travel between villages and local markets.

For the last five years , killer whales have been ramming – and in some cases sinking – expensive yachts, fishing boats and motorboats in the crystalline waters off the coast of Spain, Portugal, France and Morocco.

Why has been a mystery – until recently.

A multinational group of orca experts that met in February and were sponsored by the governments of Spain and Portugal has released a report outlining why they think it’s happening and what can be done to stop it.

What originally appeared to be attacks on more than 673 boats since 2020 now seem more likely to be a bunch of bored teenage orcas looking for something to do, said cetacean expert Alexandre Zerbini. Essentially, the whales started a fad of playing with boat rudders.

The report comes two weeks after the first ramming of the season , which resulted in a sailboat sinking at the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. On the morning of May 12, a group of orcas snuck up on a 50-foot sailboat and dove at its rudder, damaging the Alborán Cognac and causing a leak that eventually sank the boat. The two crew members were evacuated to a nearby oil tanker, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais .

These encounters have been going on for five years, with the first documented encounter happening in May 2020. Since then, at least five sailboats and two Moroccan fishing boats have been sunk.

“It starts in the spring, goes way off the charts in the summer and goes away in fall. That’s because the whales and boats are in the same area at the same time,” said Naomi Rose, a senior scientist with the Animal Welfare Institute in Washington, D.C., who was part of the working group.

This group of orcas interacts with the vessels because they are being enriched by the experience, said Renaud de Stephanis, president of CIRCE (Conservación, Información y Estudio sobre Cetáceos), an organization dedicated to preserving marine life. De Stephanis has been studying orca behavior for over 25 years and was also at the gathering of scientists in Madrid.

“The sea is a very boring place for an animal,” said de Stephanis. “Imagine if you’re a dog or some other mammal, you can interact with objects around you. But in the sea there’s not much for the orcas to interact with, so they play with the rudders.”

A dangerous game for young, bored whales

Overall the incidents have mostly involved juveniles, who are “more playful and courageous in approaching boats,” said Zerbini, who also chairs the International Whaling Commission’s scientific committee.

He imagines a young orca butted its head against a boat’s rudder one time and when it moved, the orca thought, “This is fun.” After ramming it a few times, a piece of the rudder broke off and that was even more fun because there was something to play with.

“There’s documented evidence of the orcas then playing with the pieces,” he said.

Orcas , which are also called killer whales, are actually the largest member of the dolphin family . Dolphins in turn are a type of toothed whale , a group that also includes porpoises, beaked whales and sperm whales.

This type of behavior isn't surprising, given that orcas have culture, exhibit coordinated behavior, share knowledge and have long memories, said Rose.

“It’s a very sophisticated thing to do something for no purpose other than that it amuses you,” she said.

Orca attacks aren't about revenge

There was no evidence that the attacks are being led by older female orcas in revenge for a boat harming a young whale, as has been suggested at times , the group said. The notion took the internet by storm in 2023, with "Sink the rich" mugs and T-shirts featuring killer whales on them proliferating.

“That’s probably based on people watching Hollywood movies,” Zerbini said.

Despite the number of news reports that have suggested the matriarch revenge theory, “I tracked it down and it never happened,” said Rose.

In the face of what they felt was incorrect information about the motivations behind the encounters, she and close to 80 other marine biologists published an open letter in September saying they didn't believe that was what was behind the incidents.

"Science cannot yet explain why the Iberian orcas are doing this, although we repeat that it is more likely related to play/socializing than aggression. However, it is unfounded and potentially harmful to the animals to claim it is for revenge for past wrongs or to promote some other melodramatic storyline," they wrote.

The new Spanish/Portuguese report underscores this and adds why it might have happened – the recovery of the bluefin tuna orcas prey on.

Why were the young orcas so bored?

A surprising chain of events is behind the encounters, the scientists believe.

This particular population of Iberian killer whales is critically endangered, in part, because its primary prey were bluefin tuna that had long been overfished and were in decline.

That meant the orcas had to spend lots of time hunting and feeding, leaving little space for the kind of play juveniles are known for.

Better protections have meant the tuna population rebounded in recent years. Climate change may also play a role, leading the tuna to be abundant in the Gulf of Cádiz year-round rather than seasonally. "This year-round abundance means that there appears to no longer be a need for the whales to pursue every fish encountered," the report said.

That was good for the orcas but may be the cause of the problems for boaters, said Zerbini.

Effectively, the killer whales “have time on their hands," he said, "so they’ll go start playing with rudders.”

Orcas have a history of weird fads

Killer whale groups, especially younger individuals, are known for their fads and idiosyncrasies.

In the Pacific Northwest, one group of killer whales suddenly got into the habit of carrying dead salmon around on their heads in 1987. The fad arose and spread widely among the group that summer.

The salmon hats craze began with adolescent orcas but then spread, said Rose.

“By the end, everyone was wearing them, including the adults,” she said.

Then the fashion dropped out of style as quickly as it had begun.

Zerbini thinks the craze for ramming rudders among the Iberian killer whales is probably a similar fad. “They are very intelligent and playful animals,” he said.

Only about 15 out of the fewer than 40 or so killer whales in this population are engaging in the behavior.

“We think the orcas are getting something out of it, they are enjoying what’s happening. They’re playing,” he said. “Obviously, they don’t understand that that play can mean harm to the boats.”

What should boat owners do?

The group discussed methods to deter the orcas from interacting with the rudders. One method that de Stephanis is testing involves altering the surface and appearance of the rudder.

“The orcas are very timid and careful, these plastic protuberances create acoustic sounds when the orcas scan the rudder,” said de Stephanis.  In addition, orcas really hate jellyfish, so adding flowing pieces behind the rudder gives it the appearance of a jellyfish and deters the orca, de Stephanis added.

Another possible deterrent: hanging lines on weights into the water around the boat.

For now, workshop participants suggest mariners avoid areas where the Iberian killer whales are likely to be from May to August, stay closer to shore in shallow areas and move at least a mile away from any orcas who begin to interact with their boats, preferably toward shore to make rescue faster, should it be necessary.

The suggestions, which have been communicated to boaters in areas where the killer whales are interacting with vessels, appear to already be having an effect.

Since changing the recommendations to advising vessels to flee the interaction immediately, vessel rescues have declined by 80% from May 2023 through May 2024, said de Stephanis.

During that same period, the number of interactions (when an orca touches a vessel) has declined by 70%, he said.
