Bruckmann 56

  • By Dennis Caprio
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Mark Ellis got the bottom right. It’s the perfect platform on which to hang all the other nifty elements of the Bruckmann 56.

Forgive my preference for bottoms, but a yacht’s bottom is her most important element. A great shape below the waterline may be the only difference between a great yacht and a mediocre one.

I spent most of a day aboard hull number one of the Bruckmann 56 and came away thinking she is among the finest midsize motoryachts I’ve experienced. She is seakindly, agile at all speeds, quiet, comfortable and perfect for her purpose-coastal cruising with a crew of four adults or extended cruising with a skipper and mate, intimate or otherwise. For short hops, a stateroom right forward of the galley opposite the utility room/pantry accommodates two guests in over/under berths.

Starting from the bottom, Ellis called on his extensive experience with planing powerboats to develop an optimal configuration for a specific speed range. In this case, Ellis’ client, Arthur Labatt, wanted a cruising speed of about 20 knots and a top speed approaching 30 knots. More important, though, Labatt wanted the yacht to plane at relatively low speeds and to behave well at displacement speed. To him, “behave meant to steer accurately, remain laterally stable and roll minimally in beam seas and wakes.

Ellis drew an interesting variation on the V-hull theme to satisfy the client’s brief. The entry is steep to soften the yacht’s initial encounter with waves. From amidships to the end of the run, the bottom maintains a constant deadrise angle (no twist), as is typical of the Hunt deep-V. The rest of the configuration uniquely combines rocker, wide chine flats and a long skeg to achieve the results the client wanted. Ellis has successfully used variations of this bottom on a number of boats, large and small, outboard and inboard.

Rocker is a longitudinal curvature-a shallow smile when you see the lines in profile. Finding the right amount of rocker may be more black magic than science, but I know it works. Rocker softens the ride in a seaway, and I’ve proved this to myself on a number of motoryachts. The skeg enhances the yacht’s directional stability at all speeds, but it’s especially effective in following seas and wind.

Almost every V-shape planing hull on the water has chine flats, which add lift and provide lateral stability when the boat’s at rest or moving slowly. Ellis gave the Bruckmann 56 substantially wider flats than is common on boats this size, reasoning that the increase in area would improve lift. He was correct. The Bruckmann 56 planes at about 12 knots (1300 rpm) and reaches full plane without squatting. The boat simply rises without the squat of a typical deep-V. What’s more, she will stay on plane if the helmsman drops a few rpm, so the boat doesn’t hunt for a comfortable attitude at transition speeds. On the other hand, when she drops off plane, she gracefully settles to displacement speed, like a prima ballerina coming off pointe.

As I motored through all points of the compass-upwind and down, beam-to and quartering-off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, I realized the Bruckmann 56 strikes a wonderful compromise. She’s so comfortable and handy at displacement speeds-and so economical, burning about 2 gallons per engine per hour-that she transcends the traditional long-range displacement motoryacht for many yachtsmen. Imagine being able to lope along, sipping fuel, then run up to a 20-knot cruise if, for example, the weather threatened. You’d burn five times the amount of fuel, but you’d get out of the mess.

Test boats are like grandchildren: I get to play with them for a short time and return them when I’ve finished. This arrangement rarely pleases me, and I certainly wasn’t eager to return the 56. Driving this yacht pleased me more than any other aspect of her design. Although Ellis’ naval architecture goes a long way toward making the Bruckmann 56 such a buttoned-down sea boat, the skillful craftsmen at Bruckmann Yachts have taken it the rest of the way. The structure, built of fiberglass over a Core-Cell linear foam core, is enormously stiff. Flat surfaces in the bottom stay flat when the seas beat on them, which contributes to the ride quality. The integrity of this hull, deck and superstructure reduces noise, too-noise of the water working on the hull and noise from the machinery. I wish I could tell you exactly how quiet the 56 was. My sound meter slipped out of the pocket of my windbreaker when I hung out over the side deck to watch the hull go through the water. It now resides somewhere on the floor of the Atlantic. Based on my perception and experience measuring decibels, I rank the 56 as quiet-enough to carry on a conversation in normal tones at the inside helm when the boat is making 20 knots.

Bruckmann Yachts may be an under-appreciated builder south of the border between the United States and Canada, but the yard’s reputation likely will grow as more and more of its yachts find homes in the States. Inside and out, the Bruckmann 56 was expertly done and would compare favorably with the quality we expect from Alden Yachts, Morris Yachts and Hinckley, for example.

A lot of handwork goes into completing the 56, because each boat is custom. Builders who use Core-Cell foam generally construct the boat over male station molds, laying on planks of bead-and-cove Core-Cell the way a builder of traditional wood yachts hangs cedar planks. This is among the most cost-effective ways to build a composite one-off or a small number of yachts in series. This method generally requires a lot of fairing, but careful workmanship and expertly applied paint produce stellar results. I didn’t see any flaws in the topsides during my brief inspection.

Butternut joinerwork fills the interior of this 56. It’s lighter than teak or mahogany, but darker than naturally finished oak or maple. The grain is more open than that of the tropical hardwoods, but the effect is pleasantly unique. On the debit side, butternut is softer than cherry, maple or the tropical hardwoods, so it dents more easily. At least, the satin finish used for the joinerwork won’t announce the presence of a dent with the fanfare often produced by high-gloss varnish.

I liked the arrangement plan quite a lot. The master stateroom is aft over the planing surface of the hull. The motion back there should rarely intrude on the owner’s sleep during overnight passages. It has a private companionway to the cockpit on the port side, allowing the owner and his mate to sip their nightcap under the stars, then quietly descend to a peaceful night’s sleep-all the while remaining invisible to everyone else aboard.

Having the galley in the midst of the action recalls all those gatherings of friends and relatives standing, sitting and leaning in the kitchen. A pair of stools had the place of honor at the breakfast bar on the port side, and when I sat on one of them, I discovered an electric keyboard lurking beneath. So that’s why the Corian counter has a rectangular seam.

One of my favorite spaces-one that reinforces this yacht’s cruising mission-is the utility room/pantry on the starboard side right forward of the helm. It houses a combo washer/dryer, additional refrigeration and dry stowage for food.

Another of my favorite areas, also attesting to the yacht’s ability to cruise safely, is the engineroom. It’s as well lighted and tidy as an operating room. Spacious, too. Straight six-cylinder engines make so much sense in a yacht of this size, because they are narrow. The accessibility to all of the plumbing, wiring and routine service points on the engines may not encourage the owner to inspect the machinery every day, but it won’t discourage him, either.

The Bruckmann 56 is at the top of my short list, with her seakeeping and gentle behavior, her strength and comfort. Her owner is a lucky person.

The Bruckmann 65 motorsailer from the board of designer Mark Ellis looks like it was created to cruise two people in extreme comfort. With a beam of 18 feet carried well aft there’ll be plenty of room to keep a couple happy living aboard full time. Of course, a deckhand could help take care of maintenance and perform the heavy work of coming to and leaving docks on a boat that’s going to weigh nearly 100,000 pounds when it’s full of gear, fuel, and water.

The pilothouse/saloon is on the same level as the large cockpit so those inside can easily socialize with those outside. There’s also an inside steering station for when you just have to go sailing on a rainy day.

Down three steps, the galley, to port, looks like it will have room enough to create even the most elaborate meals. Opposite are a desk and an L-shaped seating area that the builder’s literature says will be used as a library or a study. Forward, to starboard, is a large guest cabin with a head and sink en suite; across the passageway is a large head and shower. A cabin with upper and lower berths is just forward of that, and in the forepeak is the large owner’s cabin with an island queen berth and another big head and shower.

On deck, the house is low and long until the pilothouse rises aft. The drawings show an inflatable dinghy stored on the aft part of the pilothouse-presumably the boom serves as a hoist. A built-in swim platform extends the waterline a few feet aft of the transom, which has a door let into it for access.

The rig carries a substantial sail plan, so the boat should sail well. I haven’t seen the underwater plans, but I’ve known Mark Ellis to design cruising boats that show a fair turn of speed, and with it’s long waterline, the Bruckmann 65 shouldn’t be any different.

When there’s no wind, a 250-horsepower John Deere diesel will provide the impetus, and a powerful bow-thruster will assist maneuvering in tight quarters.

The Bruckmann 65 is expected to sell for $2.3 million US.

DESIGNER’S COMMENTS

The Bruckmann Daysailer enters the market as a confident daysailer and capable performance yacht. A split personality, she may readily carry upwards of eight individuals for an excursion around the bay, and yet she is equally adept as an overnighter. In either instance she will be a true performer and head turner, as exhibited by her low profile, aggressive sail plan and performance-oriented shoal draft keel. Characterized by a clean deck layout, commodious cockpit, inviting interior, and lightweight glass construction, the Bruckmann Daysailer presents her owner with an extremely versatile sailing yacht, capable of tackling what task the day whips up before her.

The interior works to complement the smart design features and quality components found on deck. The galley on port provides guests with refrigeration, microwave, and stainless sink. Thick cushions provide comfort for sitting or sleeping while six opening ports and two deck hatches allow natural lighting and abundant ventilation. A centerline table is available for dining, and a V-berth may be fitted if so desired.

Russian Disinformation Videos Smear Biden Ahead of U.S. Election

Many of the videos are trying to appeal to right-wing voters with fake messages about President Biden, experts say.

  • Share full article

A wide cityscape of buildings in Moscow.

By Julian E. Barnes and Steven Lee Myers

Julian Barnes, who covers U.S. intelligence agencies, and Steven Lee Myers, who covers misinformation, have been reporting on Russian efforts to influence the 2024 presidential election.

Last month, a video began circulating on social media purporting to tell the story of an internet troll farm in Kyiv targeting the American election.

Speaking in English with a Slavic accent, “Olesya” offers a first-person account of how she and her colleagues initially worked in support of President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. Then, she says, after a visit by mysterious Americans who were “probably C.I.A.,” the group began sending messages to American audiences in support of President Biden.

“We were told our new target was the United States of America, especially the upcoming elections,” the woman in the video says. “Long story short, we were asked to do everything to prevent Donald Trump from winning the elections.”

The video is fake, part of an effort to cloud the political debate ahead of the U.S. elections.

U.S. officials say the video is consistent with Russian disinformation operations as internet warriors aligned with Russia appear to be honing their strategy. Some of the old tactics of 2016 or 2020 could be used again, with new refinements.

An analysis of the video done by U.S. intelligence agencies found that the voice of “Olesya” was synthetically generated, an intelligence official said Thursday, a potential sign of how Russian operatives are blending new techniques with old tactics.

While there has been much hand-wringing over the role that artificial intelligence could play this year in fooling voters, current and former officials said that videos were one of the most immediate threats.

Microsoft said the video featuring “Olesya” probably came from a group it calls Storm-1516, a collection of disinformation experts who now focus on creating videos they hope might go viral in America.

The group most likely includes veterans of the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-aligned troll farm that sought to influence the 2016 election. The agency was run by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group who led a rebellion against the Kremlin and then was killed in a plane crash that American and allied officials believe was orchestrated by Russian intelligence agencies.

Microsoft said the group also included people associated with Valery Korovin, the figurehead of an obscure Moscow-based think tank called the Center for Geopolitical Expertise, a conservative organization affiliated with Aleksandr Dugin, an ultranationalist writer who faces U.S. sanctions for his role in recruiting fighters for the war.

Russian operatives are leaning into videos, many of them that falsely purport to be made by independent journalists or whistle-blowers. The videos, opposed to blog or social media posts, are more likely to spread beyond the conspiratorial fringes of America and become part of mainstream discourse.

On Wednesday afternoon, Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Russia was the most active threat to the coming election. Russia, she said, tries to erode trust in democratic institutions, exacerbate social divisions and undermine support for Ukraine.

“Russia relies on a vast multimedia influence apparatus, which consists of its intelligence services, cyberactors, state media proxies and social media trolls,” she said. “Moscow most likely views such operations as a means to tear down the United States.”

China has a sophisticated influence operation and is increasingly confident in its ability to affect election results, Ms. Haines said. But she added that the intelligence community assessed that China did not try to influence the 2020 presidential election, and that so far there was no information that China would be more active in this year’s contests.

Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia and the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, said that adversaries had a greater incentive than ever to intervene in elections but that the public had too often treated such meddling “as trivial or quaint.”

Clint Watts, the general manager of Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center, said pushing out written disinformation with bots was largely a waste of time — in 2024 it is disinformation video that has the best chance of spreading with American audiences.

The C.I.A. video, Mr. Watts said, was a classic Russian tactic: accuse your adversary of the very thing you are doing. “When they say there’s a troll farm operated by Zelensky in Ukraine going after the U.S. election, what they’re saying is this is what we’re doing,” Mr. Watts said.

Walter Trosin, a spokesman for the C.I.A., said the agency was not involved in the activities described in the video.

“This claim is patently false and precisely the type of disinformation that the intelligence community has long warned about,” Mr. Trosin said. “C.I.A. is a foreign-focused organization that takes our obligation to remain uninvolved in American politics and elections very seriously.”

At the Senate hearing, Ms. Haines praised the C.I.A. for calling out the video publicly, saying it was an example of how the government will identify disinformation by Russia or other countries during the current election.

Multiple groups in Russia push out disinformation aimed at America . In addition to the videos, researchers and government officials say, Russia has created a handful of fake American local news sites and is using them to push out Kremlin propaganda , interspersed with stories about crime, politics and culture.

Gen. Paul M. Nakasone, who retired from the Army this year and is the former director of the National Security Agency, said the best defense to Russian disinformation remained the same: identifying it and publicizing the propaganda push. The United States, he said, needs to expand its information sharing both domestically and around the world so people can identify, and discount, disinformation spread by Moscow.

“The great antidote to all of this is being able to shine a light on it,” said General Nakasone, who last week was named as the founding director of Vanderbilt University’s new Institute for National Defense and Global Security. “If they are trying to influence or interfere in our elections, we should make it as hard as possible for them.”

Some mainstream Republicans have already warned fellow lawmakers to be wary of repeating claims that originated in Russian disinformation or propaganda.

“We see directly coming from Russia attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor,” Representative Michael R. Turner, an Ohio Republican who is the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on April 7.

Russia’s information warriors have pushed fake videos to spread lies about Ukraine , aimed at undermining its credibility or painting it as corrupt. Republican politicians opposed to sending more aid to Ukraine have repeated baseless allegations that Mr. Zelensky has tried through associates to buy a yacht, disinformation that first appeared on a video posted to YouTube and other social media sites.

Most of the videos produced by Storm-1516 fail to get traction. Others come close. A video pushed out on a Russian Telegram channel purported to show Ukrainian soldiers burning an effigy of Mr. Trump, blaming him for delays in aid shipments.

The video was highlighted on Alex Jones’s right-wing conspiracy site, InfoWars, and other English-language outlets. But it was quickly discounted — the purportedly Ukrainian soldiers had Russian accents and were masked.

“This campaign has been working to advance some of Russia’s key objectives, particularly that of portraying Ukraine as a corrupt, rogue state that cannot be trusted with Western aid,” Mr. Watts said.

Since last August, Microsoft has identified at least 30 videos produced by Storm-1516. The first ones were aimed at Ukraine. But others are trying to influence American politics by appealing to right-wing audiences with messages that Mr. Biden is benefiting from Ukrainian assistance.

Intelligence officials, lawmakers and security firms have warned about the use of artificial intelligence by China, Russia and other nation states intent on spreading disinformation. But so far, Russian groups like Storm-1516 have mostly avoided using A.I. tools, according to security firms.

“Many of the A.I. campaigns are easy to detect or unwind,” said Brian Murphy, the general manager of national security at Logically, which tracks disinformation. “A.I. is getting better, but it is still not at the stage this year wherein it is going to be used at the scale and with the quality some predict. Maybe in a year or so.”

Both government officials and outside experts, however, have said that A.I.-altered audio had proved more effective than altered videos. At the hearing on Wednesday, Ms. Haines highlighted a fake audio recording released in Slovakia two days before its parliamentary election. While quickly identified as fake, news and government agencies struggled to disclose the manipulation and the target of the fake recording lost a close election.

Outside experts have said that artificial intelligence has been used in some Russian propaganda videos to obscure accents. It is not clear exactly why a synthetic voice would have been used in the fake video of the C.I.A. troll farm.

But on Wednesday, Ms. Haines said artificial intelligence and other innovations “have enabled foreign influence actors to produce seemingly authentic and tailored messaging more efficiently at greater scale and with content adapted for different languages and cultures.”

For now, though, basic videos like the C.I.A. troll farm or yacht video that purport to have authentic narrators with access to exquisite information are the most prevalent threat.

In 2016, Russian-controlled propagandists could push out fake news articles or social media posts and, in some cases, have an impact. But now, those old techniques do not work.

“No one will pay attention to that nowadays,” Mr. Watts said. “You have to have a video form to really grab an American audience today, which 10 years ago was just not even technically that possible.”
