By Katie Scott 19 February 2021
Lurssen’s 142m/466ft motor yacht NORD , formerly known as Project Opus, has successfully been delivered to her owner. She set off from the German yard this morning on her maiden voyage to Gibraltar.
Initially known as 'Project Redwood' and then 'Project Opus', megayacht NORD was constructed at the Lurssen Bremen shipyard and boasts no less than 20 cabins for up to 36 guests.
Officially launched in July 2020, NORD spans over six decks and is one of the largest motor yachts delivered in 2021.
First announced in December 2015, the name NORD was exclusively revealed by YachtCharterFleet and was initially proposed to be a 139m Project. She has since been extended by an additional three metres, allowing for extra amenities onboard.
Sporting immaculate design from Italian studio Nuvolari & Lenard, who previously collaborated with Lurssen on the award-winning 88m/289ft superyacht QUATTROELLE , the yacht's profile is particularly striking.
One of the most iconic components of her exterior is the subtle nod to the automobile industry; NORD is the first yacht to have her nameplate on the bow, much like a car grill.
NORD showcases her capacious volume of 9,250GT by providing extensive relaxation and lounging areas, as well as indulgent social environments for unforgettable parties.
Featuring a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, NORD has been built in compliance to Lloyds Register PYC classification society rules.
First seen on the move in October 2018, before becoming Project Opus in 2019, she joins the Top 10 of the World's longest yachts alongside 180m (592.7ft) superyacht AZZAM and 156m (511.8ft) DILBAR .
Indicating several unique features onboard the latest Lurssen megayacht, dual helipads, on-deck swimming pools and Jacuzzis are just some key features listed for NORD.
A spacious sports and diving centre accompany storage for tenders up to 15m, and a custom hangar slides in to place within the superstructure when not in use.
It is currently unknown whether NORD is to be available for superyacht charters .

The 141.6-metre Nord was designed with one idea in mind: she must cause strong emotions in every observer, not only through her sheer size, but with the design itself. Responsible for her stunning exterior and interior design is the Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, who have given Nord her striking appearance with a bow design never before seen on a yacht. The 2021 delivered yacht Nord has implemented an exhaust after treatment system, which consists of the combination of a silencer with a selective catalytic reduction in the same casing, which can achieve a cleaning rate up to 97 % of nitrogen and additional reduction of acoustic noise – a Lürssen development.

Nord Yacht: An Insider’s Guide
The Nord yacht was known as Project OPUS when it was still being built. It is one of the largest yachts in the world and was launched back in 2021. Like many yachts in the last year this was the target of international investigations and sanctions. However, unlike some other vessels, Nord managed to elude authorities and return to Russian waters. As such it has not been seized and no sanctions have been imposed against its owner insofar as the yacht is concerned.
According to reports, the owner was aware that a potential seizure was imminent where the boat was docked in the Seychelles. To avoid sanctions, a staggering $465,000 worth of fuel was pumped into the vessel before it set sail to Vladivostok in Russia. The non-stop journey was undertaken at full speed and covered 6,701 nautical miles which is pretty amazing. In order to make this work, the yacht had to shut off its mandatory location responders to evade notice by authorities.
Since that time, it has ventured out again and has been seen in Hong Kong, South Korea, the Maldives and, in 2023, it returned to the Seychelles.
Nord is one of the most expensive yachts ever built and features a vast array of features and amenities designed to give passengers a full luxury experience at sea.
Who is the Nord Yacht Owner?
The Nord is owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov (sometimes spelled Alexey Mordashov). Mordashov is the chairman and largest shareholder of Russia’s biggest steel and mining company Severstal. Though there are a number of billionaires in Russia, Mordashov ranks first if his family wealth is included. His fortune is estimated to be around $30 billion.
How Big is the Nord Yacht?
The Nord is an absolutely massive 466 feet in length, making it one of the largest yachts in the world . The beam of the vessel measures in at 64 feet while the displacement is 9,250 gross tons. It features a 17.7 foot draft and has the capacity to handle up to 36 guests at one time.
How Fast is the Nord and What Engines Does it Use?
Sources actually don’t agree on the internal working of the Nord. Lurssen, the yacht builder, does list the vessel’s speed at 18 knots which is actually in contrast to what other sources say which come in both higher and lower though they don’t specify cruising or maximum speed.
On the low end, cruising speed is listed at 15 knots. On the high end, maximum speed is listed at 20 knots. But, with Lurssen saying 18 knots, you have to take their word that it’s one or the other making either the 15 or the 20 incorrect.
Also interesting is that there is some disagreement as to whether the yacht has 2 or 4 MTU engines. It is generally agreed, however, that the Nord is working with 4,963hp MTU (20V 4000 M73L) diesel engines.
How Much Did the Nord Yacht Cost?
When the yacht was registered in the Cayman Islands the value was listed at $300 million. However, it’s also believed that this number is a bit of an undervaluation and the actual value of the yacht is somewhere around $500 million. If that higher number is true then the Nord ranks among the top ten most expensive yachts in the whole world.
It’s been estimated that annual running costs to handle all the fuel and crew salaries as well as upkeep and general costs are between $40 million and $50 million. Despite the high costs, the vessel is not a part of any yacht charter fleet and can’t be rented out if you’re in the market for a week on a luxury yacht.
Design and Features of the Yacht Nord
Superyacht Nord was designed by German yacht makers Lurssen back in 2021. The exterior and interior design of the yacht were handled by Italian design studio Nuvolari & Lenard. Like most yachts of its size it has a steel hull, teak decks and an aluminum superstructure.
It’s been said that the yacht was designed for exploration and long-range cruising. One of the designers said it’s a warship wearing a tuxedo, if that helps give you an idea of what the boat is like.
The bow is flattered at the front and features a massive nameplate which actually lights up at night. Some Russian billionaires are a bit sheepish about publicity and being seen but Nord wants to be seen and makes sure everyone notices it. Even the choice of paint, avoiding the typical white and going with champagne and deep blue accents plus blue lights, draws attention to every aspect of the yacht.
Amenities and Features
The motor yacht Nord has a prominent helipad located at the bow of the vessel and a very large pool located aft above the beach club. There’s also a second helipad and even a helicopter hangar on board. The hangar closes over the second helipad which is located on the top deck and is built into the main mast of the vessel.
A total of 36 guests can be accommodated in 20 cabins while there is also room for a crew of 50 on board. There are two elevators to help navigate the vessel’s six decks as well as some of the standard amenities you’d expect guests to be able to enjoy on a luxury yacht. These include:
- A fully equipped gym
- A beauty salon
- A tender garage which houses several tenders as well as a variety of toys and water vehicles
- A large beach club
- Massive dining hall and bar area
No pictures of the interior of the yacht have been made public so, as bold as the exterior looks, the interior details are still mostly under wraps.
The Bottom Line
Nord is owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov. The estimated cost of the vessel is a steep $500 million. The yacht is one of the largest in the world at 466 feet in length. It can reach speeds of 18 knots and has space for as many as 36 guests with a crew of 50.
Like many Russian-owned yachts, the Nord was almost seized in 2020 as a result of sanctions against Russian oligarchs as a result of the war in Ukraine. However, the vessel was able to elude authorities and was last seen in the Seychelles

- Nord Star 49+
Nord Star 49+ is not only a style study in skilled craftsmanship, sober luxury and well-thought-out interior layout. She is also a beacon in terms of comfort, safety and safe sea characteristics. Just taken, as this is Finland’s largest mass-produced motorboat of all time – built for an independent boating life during too long stays at sea.
For the purpose, there is thus all the equipment, comfort and other things that are required if a boat is to function as a floating home in full. With this, sea features that beat most and make the most agitated of waters seem undramatic.
In terms of layout, the Nord Star 49+, thanks to its increased size, makes a clear departure from what you are used to when it comes to cabin boats. For example, how about a large center cabin with full headroom, a two-level salon and a flybridge of over 20 square meters? Added to that is the opportunity for the client to largely decide for himself how the boat should be designed. Something that happens with frequent contacts and safe advice from our experienced staff.
For example, is it allowed to be an extra sleeping space with a double berth, a laundry room or a large storage room? Should the stage fixed bathing platform be replaced with a hydraulic ditto for easy launching of the jet ski or tender? The possibilities are many and the choice is yours.
No matter what, the finished result will be a boat that sums up everything of the long-standing Nord Star shipyard’s long experience and curious joy of discovery.
The proud flagship
Three cabins The Nord Star 49+ offers no less than three substantial cabins. The master cabin in the middle of the boat is something very special with its light, comfort, space and its view via windows in the sides of the hull. There are also double toilets with showers.
Royal flybridge Three substantial chairs, a huge L-shaped sofa, wet bar (with fridge, grill and sink) and plenty of room to maneuver in between. On the 20 square meter flybridge, you get a new perspective on boating – literally.
Lowerable bathing platform As a tempting extra finesse, the boat can be had with a hydraulic bathing jetty that makes launching the water scooter or tender child’s play.
Incomparable spaces Despite the luxurious and airy interior, the shipyard has not budged an inch when it comes to wide gangways, large aft deck free passages and everything else that creates flow and makes boating easy.
Price from: 1 017 400 €
Excellent driving characteristics
Special hull design gives excellent driving experience and reduces hull noise.
Hydraulic swim plattform
Optionally, you can purchase a hydraulically lowered swim platform that can accommodate a small tender boat or water jet.
Large flybridge
All Nord Star 49 SCYs have a large flybridge. As an option you can chose a grill, freezer and sun bed.
Sun bed in the bow
As an option there is a sun bed and table available for the bow.
Large outdoors area
Large back door, large sofa and an electrically adjustable table on the aft deck. Canopy available as an option.
With the big pentry, you have to open the lid for easy access to your aft cabin. The Pentry has a fridge, freezer, hob, sink and plenty of storage space.
Spacious cockpit
The cockpit has two separate seats and a spacious, clear panel for instruments and navigation equipment.
From the spacious lounge, passengers have great views and a lot of room for dining.
In the bow of the boat there is a large VIP cabin, with a large double bed, wardrobe and plenty of storage.

EJET Eco-Friendly Electric Motor & Drivetrain Yacht Tenders: New Model Announced
Boat engineering and design company EJET Electric Yacht Tenders has announced the development of its latest electric motor 9X yacht tender model.
Ljubljana, Slovenia - March 21, 2024 —
Much like their highly acclaimed 4X tender, the upcoming 9X model sports EJET’s proprietary electric motor and drivetrain, going in line with founder Žiga Jarc’s mission of providing sustainable transportation options for yacht owners and guests. Both models will be available in the summer, with the 9X build slated for initial testing in July.
For more information, please visit https://ejet.co/
The announcement follows EJET’s recent appearance at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show. Having received the International Boat Industry’s Rising Star Award, the company revealed the development of its larger 9X model with the aim of promoting environmental responsibility within the boating industry.
Designed to be lightweight and compact without sacrificing output or speed, the new tender will be powered by a 220 kWh battery and a 300 kW motor, with an option to upgrade to 340 kW, ensuring 98% efficiency and making it suitable for sports such as water skiing. The boat’s V-shaped hull has been adjusted to accommodate EJET’s custom electric powertrain and is capable of withstanding turbulent waters and inclement weather conditions. Each boat is built with standard hydraulic steering mechanisms, along with the company’s military-grade jet system, allowing for easy maneuvering, reversing, and sudden stops in both low- and high-speed scenarios.
The 9X model will also feature a digital interface, which boaters will be able to use to select different driving modes and dynamics, view real-time GPS navigation and system data, and access the smart audio Bluetooth system. Additionally, amenities such as a hydraulic bathing platform, an electric grill, an ice maker, and a refrigerator will all be available as upgrade options for all 9X tenders.
About EJET Electric Yacht Tenders
Founded in 2016 by Žiga Jarc, EJET began with the goal of developing a zero-emissions electric yacht tender that did not compromise performance or safety. The company has since become a pioneer in electric propulsion systems and remains committed to future innovations in the boating industry. EJET tenders are currently the only products on the market with custom electric drivetrains.
EJET Electric Yacht Tenders, under the leadership of founder Žiga Jarc, is actively engaged in the development of its proprietary electric propulsion technology. The initiative is part of the company's broader commitment to innovation in high-performance, long-range powertrain technology for the marine industry. This effort underscores EJET's focus on delivering solutions characterized by their lightweight and compact design, high power output, and exceptional motor efficiency of up to 98%. With a specific emphasis on extending battery life, the company aims to set new benchmarks for what is achievable in electric propulsion within the boating sector.
“We built the company and the brand on three pillars: driver-centric experience, sustainability with clean electric power, and advanced electric propulsion technology,” says Ziga Jarc. “We cooperate with the best nautical partners to create unforgettable experiences for our customers.”
