The yacht’s owner Shirish Saraf said that the vessel was on its way to Egypt through the Gulf of Aden and was chased by the smaller vessels for four hours. It remains unclear which side started the firefight, but witnesses on board the vessel said that over 150 rounds were exchanged. The YCG issued a statement today saying that their “patrol boats introduced themselves and tried to communicate with the yacht via the VHF radio-bridge to bridge COMMS, but the yacht captain did not respond to the repeated calls.”

Superyacht Kalizma was involved in a firefight off the coast of Yemen on Friday with Yemeni Coast Guard.

The yacht, said the YCG, was not flying a flag and was sailing in Yemeni territorial waters. After hailing the vessel, the statement said, Kalizma increased its speed and fired on the coast guard vessels, which returned fire. One Yemeni soldier was killed and others were wounded, with damage to the vessels. One of the yacht’s security guards was reportedly shot in the neck. Bullet holes were photographed across Kalizma ’s wooden hull.

Kalizma ‘s managers say Indian aircraft patrolling the area identified multiple pirate skiffs, and that other distress calls regarding pirates had been made from merchant ships. The team said that the yacht made repeated but unanswered calls to the other vessels and that the vessels had no AIS tracking numbers.

Superyacht Kalizma was involved in a firefight off the coast of Yemen on Friday with Yemeni Coast Guard.

Whether this is a question of mistaken identify on behalf of the yacht crew or a legitimate pirate threat is still unclear. It’s also not clear how much damage the yacht sustained.

Kalizma was built in 1906. Burton bought the vessel in 1967 for $220,000. The boat was later purchased by Saraf, an Indian investor who owns Samena Capital. The vessel is able to accommodate up to 10 guests, with 10 crew. It was completely refurbished in 2020, according to its website, with both new interior and exterior layouts.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Armed private guards aboard a famous yacht once owned by the late Welsh actor Richard Burton fired on approaching ships on Friday in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen, in an intense gunfight. The authorities said the guards mistakenly opened fire on Yemeni Coast Guard members but the ship’s manager insisted they shot at pirates.

The shooting reportedly killed one Yemeni Coast Guard member and wounded another person in a hail of gunfire — the guards are said to have shot as many as 200 rounds of ammunition. It shows the danger faced by both shippers and security forces in the waters off the Arab world’s poorest country, even as it remains crucial for global commerce.

Details of what happened to the Kalizma remain unclear and contested, hours after the incident. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations initially reported it as an attack with gunfire off Nishtun, in Yemen’s far east near the border with Oman.

But by Friday afternoon, the British military operation providing support to ships across the Mideast described the attack in the Gulf of Aden as being “confirmed by authorities as government agency activity,” without elaborating.

Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, said in a brief that a Yemeni Coast Guard contingent had approached a Cook Islands-flagged yacht which hadn’t responded to radio calls.

According to the Coast Guard, “an armed security team ... onboard the yacht then opened fire on the approaching Yemenis and attempted to escape perceived pirates,” Ambrey said. The Coast Guard “returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved.”

Ambrey said one Yemeni Coast Guard member was killed. A later statement from the Yemeni Coast Guard, posted online, acknowledged the death and said its forces along with Yemen’s navy tried to stop the Kalizma as it was operating in a “very suspicious way” close to the shore and did not answer radio calls.

“The yacht penetrated territorial waters and sailed in them without raising the flag of the yacht’s country, as well as (it) refused to respond and stop in clear violation of international maritime law,” the Yemeni Coast Guard said.

Aashim Mongia, the owner of Mumbai’s West Coast Marine Yacht Services which manages the Kalizma, later told The Associated Press that one of the guards on board the vessel suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He insisted that “pirates” attacked the vessel first and came back in several waves to try to take the Kalizma, forcing the ship’s three guards to fire upward of 200 rounds to protect the nine crew on board.

“If it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why did they open fire?” Mongia asked.

Satellite tracking data analyzed by the AP showed the Kalizma far closer to shore than other traffic that gives Yemen a wide berth. Asked why the ship was so close to shore, Mongia said that was the planned route the vessel had for going from Salalah, Oman, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The satellite tracking data analyzed by the AP, cross-referenced with coordinates authorities earlier offered for the site of the incident, identified the Cook Islands-flagged Kalizma as the yacht involved in the shooting.

Photos from the ship showed what appeared to be bullet holes from small arms fire scattered across the luxurious Kalizma.

Initially built in 1906, Burton bought the Kalizma for $220,000 in 1967 It was on board the ship where he gave actress and his twice-wife Elizabeth Taylor a 69.42-carat, pear-shaped diamond now known as the Taylor-Burton Diamond.

The ship later was purchased by Indian investor Shirish Saraf, according to a profile by magazine Boat International. Requests for comment to Saraf’s investment firm Samena Capital went unanswered Friday.

Nishtun is held by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. The Gulf of Aden is a crucial route for global trade and has seen attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels during the country’s yearslong civil war. Somali pirate attacks that once plagued the region have mostly stopped in recent years.

However, attacks have happened there before. In December 2020, a mysterious attack targeted a cargo ship off Nishtun . In Yemen’s war, bomb-carrying drone boats, as well as sea mines, have been used.

A yacht owned by an Indian billionaire fired shots at Yemen's Coast Guard after mistaking them for pirates

  • Security guards on a pleasure yacht shot at the Yemeni Coast Guard in the Gulf of Aden on Friday.
  • The guards said they mistook the Coast Guard for pirates, the Associated Press reported.
  • The yacht involved was the 117-year-old Kalizma, which was once owned by Elizabeth Taylor.

Insider Today

A famous yacht once owned by Hollywood actors Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor was caught in a skirmish off the coast of Yemen, on Friday.

Security guards on the 117-year-old super yacht, known as  Kalizma and which is now owned by Indian billionaire Shirish Saraf , fired at an approaching Yemeni Coast Guard vessel after mistaking them for pirates, DW reported.

One Yemeni Coast Guard member was killed in the intense gunfire that followed. About 200 rounds of ammunition were exchanged, the Associated Press reported.

While the Gulf of Aden is a major trade route, it is also a hotbed for pirates, mostly coming from nearby Somalia, Marine Insight reported.

The AP, citing a brief from Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, reported that the Yemeni Coast Guard approached the yacht after it failed to respond to radio calls. The Yemeni Coast Guard told Ambery that the armed men on board began to shoot as they approached.

The Yemeni Coast Guard returned fire and chased the yacht for almost an hour until it finally responded to radio calls, clearing up the misunderstanding, the AP reported.

The Coast Guard said the boat had been acting "in a very suspicious manner" because it had armed men and was approaching very close to the Yemeni coast, according to a statement obtained by local outlet Aden AlGad. Satellite data reviewed by the AP showed the Kalizma close to the coast.

The owner of Mumbai's West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which manages the yacht, insisted that pirates had attacked the yacht, the AP reported.

"If it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why did they open fire?" Aashim Mongia told the AP.

Gunfire broke out off the coast of Yemen on Friday in an incident appearing to involve a private yacht with a glamorous Hollywood history.

Private guards on the yacht Kalizma fired at Yemeni coast guards after mistaking them for pirates, according to a maritime intelligence company.

The yacht once belonged to the actor Richard Burton, who gave it as a gift to his wife Elizabeth Taylor and while on board presented her with the 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond.

It was not clear if anyone was wounded in Friday's gunfire.

The British military had initially reported a vessel under attack by three boats early on Friday.

But it later downgraded the attack to an incident after clarifying that the gunfire was "government agency activity".

Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, said the Yemeni coast guard had approached a Cook Islands-flagged yacht after it failed to respond to radio calls.

According to the coast guard, “an armed security team ... on board the yacht then opened fire on the approaching Yemenis and attempted to escape perceived pirates”, the company said.

The coast guard “returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved”.

Satellite tracking data appeared to show the Kalizma as the craft involved, the Associated Press reported, based on co-ordinates provided by the British military.

Yemen's government did not publicly acknowledge the incident.

The Gulf of Aden is a busy route for global trade and has been the site of attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels as its civil war rages.

The gunfire occurred south of Nishtun, which is held by forces loyal to the internationally recognised Yemeni government.

The government is backed by a Saudi-led coalition in a war with the Houthi rebels who seized the capital Sanaa in 2014.

The attack came after Iran separately seized an oil tanker on Thursday carrying crude for Chevron on its way to Houston, Texas.

Earlier in the week, three Russians and two Egyptians were reported missing near Yemen's Red Sea coast, raising fears of piracy.

Guards on famed yacht open fire off yemen; 1 reported killed.

Associated Press

DUBAI – Armed private guards aboard a famous yacht once owned by the late Welsh actor Richard Burton fired on approaching ships on Friday in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen, in an intense gunfight. The authorities said the guards mistakenly opened fire on Yemeni Coast Guard members but the ship's manager insisted they shot at pirates.

The shooting reportedly killed one Yemeni Coast Guard member and wounded another person in a hail of gunfire — the guards are said to have shot as many as 200 rounds of ammunition. It shows the danger faced by both shippers and security forces in the waters off the Arab world's poorest country, even as it remains crucial for global commerce.

Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, said in a brief that a Yemeni Coast Guard contingent had approached a Cook Islands-flagged yacht which hadn't responded to radio calls.

A later statement from the Yemeni Coast Guard, posted online, acknowledged the death and said its forces along with Yemen's navy tried to stop the Kalizma as it was operating in a “very suspicious way” close to the shore and did not answer radio calls.

He insisted that "pirates" attacked the vessel first and came back in several waves to try to take the Kalizma, forcing the ship's three guards to fire upward of 200 rounds to protect the nine crew on board.

Requests for comment to Saraf's investment firm Samena Capital went unanswered Friday.

Nishtun is held by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. The Gulf of Aden is a crucial route for global trade and has seen attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels during the country's yearslong civil war. Somali pirate attacks that once plagued the region have mostly stopped in recent years.

However, attacks have happened there before. In December 2020, a mysterious attack targeted a cargo ship off Nishtun . In Yemen's war, bomb-carrying drone boats, as well as sea mines, have been used.

Also in the waters near Oman, Iran on Thursday seized an oil tanker carrying crude for Chevron Corp. on its way to Houston .

Australian-flagged yacht shoots at Yemen coast guard it 'mistook for pirates'

A shootout occurred off the coast of Yemen on Friday between a luxury yacht and Yemeni coast guard.

The Associated Press reported that guards aboard the luxury yacht Kalizma opened fire on members of the Yemeni coast guard after mistaking them for pirates.

The Kalizma, a famous superyacht, was once owned by Welsh actor Richard Burton. It currently flies the flag of Australia and was last detected near Sydney in November of last year, according to the shipping website MarineTraffic.

Why the Kalizma was near Yemen and what exactly happened with regard to the shooting is unclear. The United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations initially said it received a report that shots were fired in an attack on an unspecified vessel 18 nautical miles south of Nishtun in the Arabia Sea, near the Gulf of Aden. The shooters were aboard three boats, each with three to four people on board.

Guards on famous yacht mistakenly shoot at Yemen Coast Guard

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Private armed guards aboard a famous yacht once owned by the late Welsh actor Richard Burton opened fire on Yemeni Coast Guard members Friday. The private guards reportedly mistook Coast Guard members for pirates, sparking a gunfight in the Gulf of Eden, authorities said. It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was wounded.

The incident off Yemen shows the danger faced by both shippers and security forces in the waters off the Arab world’s poorest country, even as it remains crucial for global commerce.

Details of what happened to the Kalizma remained unclear hours after the incident, which the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations initially reported as an attack with gunfire off Nishtun, in Yemen’s far east near the border with Oman.

But by Friday afternoon, the British military operation providing support to ships across the Mideast described the attack in the Gulf of Aden as being “confirmed by authorities as government agency activity,” without elaborating.

The Coast Guard “returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved.”

Yemeni officials did not acknowledge the incident publicly. Yemen’s Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Satellite tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press , cross-referenced with coordinates authorities earlier offered for the site of the incident, appeared to show the Cook Islands-flagged Kalizma as the yacht involved in the shooting.

Initially built in 1906, Burton bought the Kalizma for $220,000 in 1967 It was on board the ship where he gave actress and his twice-wife Elizabeth Taylor a 69.42-carat, pear-shaped diamond now known as the Taylor-Burton Diamond.

The ship later was purchased by Indian investor Shirish Saraf, according to a profile by the magazine Boat International. Requests for comment to Saraf’s investment firm Samena Capital went unanswered Friday. A man who answered a call to Mumbai’s West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which has managed the ship, told an AP reporter he couldn’t discuss the incident and urged him to call later. Phones at the firm rang repeatedly unanswered after that.

Nishtun is held by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. Luxury motor yacht The Kalizma gets fired upon off Yemen

Aashim mongia, owner of west coast marine yacht services that manages the kalizma, said they were attacked by a boat with no coast guard markings on it..

kalizma yacht attack

It was truly a heartbreaking moment to wake up to a flurry of texts from Shirish Saraf, the owner of the famed super yacht The Kalizma. The security on the yacht got into an intense gunfight in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen.

It’s a gorgeous luxury motor yacht with a history dating back to 1906.

It was the summer of 2021, when I was on it on a trip to Maldives and every bit of the interiors embraced neo-classical charm. It had the best of the old world, with contemporary facilities and a relaxed, intimate mood on board with nautical elements. That’s why these pictures of the majestic yacht being shot at were nightmarish. I immediately contacted Captain Saini, who mentioned he was still in a high risk area. He ensured the crew was safe and sound, which was a relief to hear.

There are a lot of conflicting reports on what transpired when the yacht was making its way from Salalah, Oman to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Oldest Luxury Motor Yacht “Kalizma” Gets Fired Upon In Gulf Of Aden

A famous 117-year-old yacht once owned by Hollywood actors Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton found itself in a skirmish off the Yemen coast on Friday.

Security guards on the super yacht, Kalizma, now owned by Shirish Saraf, the Indian billionaire, fired at an approaching vessel that belonged to the Yemeni Coast Guard after mistaking those for pirates, the DW reported.

A member of the Yemeni Coast Guard was killed in the gunfire. Per reports, nearly 200 rounds of ammunition were exchanged, per reports from the Associated Press (AP).

While the Gulf of Aden is a crucial trade channel, it also is a hotbed for pirates, especially those from nearby Somalia, per news sources.

The AP, referring to a report from Ambrey, a well-known maritime intelligence firm, reported that the Yemeni Coast Guard approached the super yacht only after it had failed to respond to the radio calls. The Yemeni Coast Guard informed Ambery that armed men on board had begun to shoot as they approached.

The Yemeni Coast Guard returned the fire and chased the yacht for about an hour until it responded to the radio calls, clearing the misunderstanding, per reports.

The Coast Guard mentioned that the vessel had been acting suspiciously as it had armed men and was approaching close to the Yemeni coast, per a statement by the local outlet named Aden AlGad. Satellite data reviewed by the AP reflected that the Kalizma was near the coast.

The owner of Mumbai-based West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which reportedly manages the yacht, said that the pirates had attacked the super yacht, per the AP.

Aashim Mongia raised the question that if it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why would they open fire?

THE ORIENT EXPRESS OF THE SEAS

The kalizma, 2022 world superyacht awards, winner of "judges' special award', "best rebuilt superyacht award" nominee, the greatest superyacht of hollywood history, a timeless romance.

The Kalizma, built in 1906 is today the world’s oldest yacht with the world’s youngest heart. A yacht that has survived world wars and plagues; marriages and break ups; owners in distress and owners in love. A yacht that has sailed frontiers that are unimaginable and been the toast of commoners and royals alike.

On the decks of this yacht, Richard Burton wooed the glamorous and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor.  They named the yacht after their three daughters Ka te, Liz a and Ma ria.

I remember my father and I hopping on board the Kalizma when she was moored in Dubai and my father told me this was a Yacht to treasure. He quite simply called it the Orient Express of the seas.

For me, the Kalizma is more than a luxury yacht. It is a tale steeped in history; a tale that never tires of being told; and a tale that has had many interesting twist to it. Which is why when we decided to refurbish the Kalizma, my intent was in clear. Nothing should alter the soul of the Kalizma.

On board you will be treated like the Kalizma has treated guests for over a century: with care; with affection and most importantly; with an attentiveness that is so hard to find in these hurried times. As you wander on board, relive the joys and passions of those who sailed on it.

Kalizma, a timeless romance.

Street newspaper appears to have Big Issue with Qilin ransomware gang

The days of cybercriminals having something of a moral compass are over.

The parent company of The Big Issue, a street newspaper and social enterprise for homeless people, is wrestling with a cybersecurity incident claimed by the Qilin ransomware gang.

In a post made to the gang's leak site, the miscreants claim to have stolen 550 GB of company data and, according to what they've released already, the haul appears vast and damaging.

In a 12-photo leak, it looks as though the driving license and salary information for Paul Cheal, CEO at Big Issue Group, The Big Issue's parent company, may have been exposed.

Danyal Sattar, CEO of Big Issue Invest, the Group's social impact investment arm, also appears to have had his passport and bank details leaked.

kalizma yacht attack

Sattar's passport is just one of many that are seemingly in the hands of Qilin's affiliates, which posted a screenshot of a file explorer page filled with what it claims to be employee passport scans.

Other images show swathes of employee data, including full names, work emails, and home addresses included in Excel spreadsheets.

Other leaked spreadsheets included data such as personal email addresses and bank details, including account numbers, names, and sort codes - all alongside other information like full names and home addresses.

Financials were also posted online, which the company does not publicly share.

The Big Issue is a publication that serves to offer homeless people, those at risk of homelessness, or those experiencing poverty a lifeline by giving them a chance to earn money and reintegrate into society.

In 2022, it was working with 3,637 vendors – 899 of which were working for the company for the first time.

Started in 1991, The Big Issue is published across four continents and is one of the UK's leading social enterprises. An attack on the group will be viewed by many as no different from one on a hospital or charity, and these are generally seen as morally abhorrent, even for cybercriminals.

Cheal said in a statement: "Last week, the Big Issue Group experienced a cyber incident. On becoming aware of this, we took immediate steps to restrict access to our systems, working with external IT security experts, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Thanks to the proactive steps taken, we have been able to begin restoring our systems and are operating with limited disruption. The publication and distribution of the Big Issue magazine is not impacted by this incident.

"As part of our investigation, we've identified that certain data related to our organisation has been posted to the dark web by the perpetrators of this incident. We're working with our external IT expert to complete our investigation as a matter of priority alongside the NCSC, the National Crime Agency, and the Metropolitan Police. In addition, we have notified relevant regulators and would like to thank our staff, partners, and suppliers for their patience whilst our investigation continues.

"This is a criminal act against our social activities and the causes we work to promote. We exist to support those living at the sharp end of poverty, who are facing barriers to opportunity. Critically our staff are continuing to support our vendors to earn a living by selling the Big Issue magazine, whilst also providing frontline support for vendors with access to advice and services, alongside making social impact lending available to social enterprises and other organizations we work with. Ensuring we continue to deliver against our mission to change lives through enterprise."

The Big Issue told us it has no evidence that points to a compromise of subscriber data.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection watchdog, said it has been notified.

"People have the right to expect that organizations will handle their personal information securely and responsibly," an ICO spokesperson told The Register .

"If an individual has concerns about how their data has been handled, they should raise it with the organization first, then report them to us if they are not satisfied with the response.

"The Big Issue has made us aware of an incident and we are assessing the information provided."

According to security expert Kevin Beaumont, the company has been dealing with the incident, which it hasn't yet linked to ransomware, "for about a week."

"Pretty messed up target as homeless people sell the magazine, which makes next to no money in profit," he said .

The Qilin ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) gang, sometimes tracked by its founding name Agenda, claims it's behind the attack. Its payload is written in Russian using Rust and Go , and the criminals behind it are also thought to be Russian.

Qilin is the name of a creature in Chinese mythology. However, it wouldn't be the first time a ransomware group has used a moniker that attempts to confuse onlookers about their country of origin. Akira , for example, is a name of Japanese origin, but it too is also thought to be staffed by Russians.

In ransomware scenarios, when a victim is posted to a leak blog, it's usually done to hurry up the negotiation process. Making the incident public for the first time could also be a way to pile on the regulatory pressure on the group, potentially forcing it to resolve the matter more quickly.

Ultimately, the criminals behind the attack want to be paid a ransom as quickly as possible and through whatever means necessary. According to research into the gang , affiliates can expect between 80 and 85 percent of the total ransom sum. ®

Private armed guards aboard a famous yacht once owned by the late Welsh actor Richard Burton opened fire on Yemeni Coast Guard members Friday after mistaking them for pirates, sparking a gunfight in the Gulf of Aden, authorities said.

The incident off Yemen shows the danger faced by both shippers and security forces in the waters off the Arab world's poorest country, even as it remains crucial for global commerce.

Details of what happened to the Kalizma remained unclear hours after the incident, which the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations initially reported as an attack with gunfire off Nishtun, in Yemen's far east near the border with Oman.

But by Friday afternoon, the British military operation providing support to ships across the Mideast described the attack in the Gulf of Aden as being "confirmed by authorities as government agency activity," without elaborating.

Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, said in a brief that a Yemeni Coast Guard contingent had approached a Cook Islands-flagged yacht which hadn't responded to radio calls.

According to the Coast Guard, "an armed security team ... onboard the yacht then opened fire on the approaching Yemenis and attempted to escape perceived pirates," Ambrey said. The Coast Guard "returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved."

Yemeni officials did not acknowledge the incident publicly. Yemen's Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Satellite tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press, cross-referenced with coordinates authorities earlier offered for the site of the incident, appeared to show the Cook Islands-flagged Kalizma as the yacht involved in the shooting.

Requests for comment to Saraf's investment firm Samena Capital went unanswered Friday. A man who answered a call to Mumbai's West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which has managed the ship, told an AP reporter he couldn't discuss the incident and urged him to call later. Phones at the firm rang repeatedly unanswered after that.

Nishtun is held by forces allied to Yemen's internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. The Gulf of Aden is a crucial route for global trade and has seen attacks attributed to Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels as its civil war rages. Somali pirate attacks that once plagued the region have mostly stopped in recent years.

However, attacks have happened there before. In December 2020, a mysterious attack targeted a cargo ship off Nishtun. In Yemen's war, bomb-carrying drone boats, as well as sea mines, have been used.

The attack comes after Iran separately seized an oil tanker Thursday carrying crude for Chevron Corp. on its way to Houston.

Explosion in the sky over Kyiv during a Russian missile strike on Sunday

Ukraine war briefing: two ships and base hit in Russian-occupied Crimea

Outcry after Russian missile breaches Polish airspace; Ukraine grapples with attacks on gas and electricity networks. What we know on day 761

Ukraine hit two Russian military ships stationed at the illegally occupied peninsula of Crimea, the Ukrainian military said on Sunday. The targets were the landing ships Yamal and Azov, a communications centre and other Black Sea fleet infrastructure . “It was the most massive attack in recent times,” said the Russian-appointed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev. He said a 65-year-old man was killed and four people injured. Footage shared on social media showed a large blast in the city, sending a fireball and black smoke into the air.

Poland said it would demand an explanation from Moscow after a Russian missile breached Polish airspace during a missile attack on Ukraine , Ashifa Kassam writes . Nato member Poland put its forces on heightened alert as a consequence. “Above all, we call on the Russian Federation to stop the terrorist air attacks on the inhabitants and territory of Ukraine, end the war and address the country’s internal problems,” said a Polish foreign ministry statement.

After the Polish airspace breach, the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, said Russia “continues to indiscriminately launch drones and missiles with no regard for millions of civilians, violating international law” .

An underground gas storage site in Ukraine was attacked on Sunday as Russian missile strikes on power facilities continued and rolling blackouts were occurring. Ukraine’s state-run Naftogaz energy firm reported the attack on the gas storage site, but added that gas supplies to consumers had not been affected. Most of Ukraine ’s gas storage capacity is in the western part of the country and it is able to store around 30bn cubic metres of gas.

Ukraine’s energy ministry and distributors said Ukraine had ramped up imports of electricity and halted exports after the recent Russian attacks in which the biggest energy producer, DTEK, lost 50% of its capacity . Russia attacked Ukrainian generating and transmission facilities on Friday, causing significant blackouts in many regions, and energy facilities in three Ukrainian regions were also attacked early on Sunday.

Volodymy Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address on Sunday, said more than 200,000 residents of Kharkiv, a frequent target of Russian attacks, were without reliable power . The network had been restored elsewhere, the Ukrainian president said. “Strict schedules” for power use were in force in Kharkiv, he said. DTEK said rolling blackouts had been imposed in the port of Odesa.

Serhiy Kovalenko, the head of distribution firm Yasno, said Russia had attacked two parts of the energy system – generation and distribution – hitting both thermal and hydropower plants . “The enemy hit hard at grid nodes and transformers,” he said. The energy ministry said Russia attempted on Sunday to destroy a critical energy infrastructure facility in the Lviv region in western Ukraine. Equipment caught fire and the facility lost power. Power lines in the Kyiv region were damaged and 1,400 households in two settlements lost power.

Russia on Sunday said air defences responded to 22 Vampire missiles launched by Ukraine at Russia’s Belgorod region .
