More than a decade later, this sailboat has covered more than 70,000nm, visited over 46 countries, and helped in creating more than 200 YouTube videos.

As one of the original and the best sailing YouTube channels, Sailing SV Delos has become a sensation among sailors as it documents the travels and adventures of a lovely crew aboard the sailing vessel, SV Delos. With his experience as a former electrical engineer, Brian Trautman has been able to make several improvements to the boat to ensure that they remain environment-friendly whenever they sail. The crew has also contributed to several philanthropic activities such as giving $50,000 to charities and contributing to restoration efforts in Dominica after the island was ravaged by Hurricane Maria.

Gone with the Wynns

If you want a sailing YouTube channel that offers an unscripted tale of an eccentric couple who left their everyday life to become perpetual travelers and experience whirlwind adventures, you've come to the right place. Known as Gone with the Wynns, this sailing YouTube channel chronicles the adventures of prominent travel vloggers Jason and Nikki Wynn.

The couple started by chronicling their travel adventures by buying an RV and undertook an epic road trip in search of endless exploration across the country. They went around North America and even trekked around Alaska and admit that they'd have stayed there forever had it not for the fact that they suffer from what they term as incurable sedentary life phobia.

The couple then decided to sail around the world and have been on a sailing voyage of more than 10,000nm. The couple has always been inspired by their unparalleled desire to explore, grow, learn, and share their travel experiences. To them, sailing is far more surreal as it's almost akin to exploring the world as it was done in the 1400s.

Neither Dan Deckert nor Kika Mevs grow up sailing and never dreamt of buying a sailboat just to cruise around the world. But soon after graduating, this gorgeous couple founded a successful architectural design-consulting firm as a way of earning a living. So far, they've visited 22 countries, covered 18,358 nautical miles, and have incredibly used zero gallons of diesel.

Screenshot of Sailing Yacht Florence's video of the front of the sailboat with Amy on the bow.

Instead of waiting a decade or more to start their dream, this British couple decided to take the leap and begin their cruising adventure in just ten months!

Since then, they’ve sailed their tiny home, an Oyster Heritage 37, to the Cape Verde Islands, French Polynesia, Seychelles, and everywhere in between.

HIGHLIGHTS: In 2023, they completed a seven-year circumnavigation when they crossed the North Atlantic and currently show no signs of settling down as they plan a large refit for their boat before heading to the Arctic.

These sailors prove you can sail the world on a small, capable bluewater boat on a modest budget.

Sailing Yacht Florence showcases their sailing journey with thoughtful storytelling and beautiful cinematography that keeps their loyal YouTube viewers coming back for more.

THIS SAILING CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You’re tired of waiting for the perfect opportunity to live your dream and need the inspiration take the leap and make it happen.

On YouTube Since: Jun. 28, 2013

The only solo sailor on this list, German native Nike Steiger, bought her 33-foot fixer-upper aluminum sailboat in Panama and restored it into a formidable bluewater sailing vessel.

White Spot Pirates captures Nike’s voyages and the myriad experiences of life on the water as a lone sailor.

Screenshot of White Spot Pirates YouTube video with a close up shot of Nike and the sail behind her.

With a mere 2,000 nautical miles in her sailing experience upon acquiring her boat, this channel beautifully illustrates how determination and a thirst for learning can pave the way for remarkable achievements on the water.

HIGHLIGHTS: Accompanied by her faithful companion Boga, Nike has navigated the Caribbean, the South American coastline, Central America, and Mexico, transforming into a full-blown salty-sailing lady!

Her videos provide a vital lens into the hurdles and victories of a lone sailor’s journey.

  • Nike is the creator of an award-winning documentary about her life-changing solo sailing journey called Untie the Lines .
  • She also co-founded the non-profit organization In Mocean to raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution, specifically in remote coastal communities.

THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You aspire to embark on a solo sailing journey or enjoy immersing yourself in thrilling adventures on the water. This sailing channel is an incredible inspiration!

Subscribers: 376K+

On YouTube Since: Jun. 13, 2012

Sailing Nahoa  is a YouTube channel created by Canadians Ben and Ashley Stobbart who saved up and sold everything to travel the world in 2015.

Since then, they’ve added two little crew members, their kids Willa and Bodhi, and have completed a circumnavigation.

Screenshot of Sailing Nahoa YouTube video with family sitting in the cockpit of the sailboat.

This sailing family has cruised all over the world on a 2005 Lagoon 410 catamaran.

From crossing the South Pacific and Indonesia to exploring Madagascar and, most recently, rounding the Cape of Good Hope, they’ve had some fantastic (and wild) experiences along the way.

Whether catching a giant tuna off their stern or fighting off pirates during the night, this crew doesn’t shy away from sharing the exciting and scary moments of living aboard.

HIGHLIGHTS:  The Nahoa crew recently partnered with New Zealand designer de Villiers Design to build a custom aluminum catamaran perfect for high-latitude sailing.

This couple’s new endeavor to build a custom catamaran exemplifies their unyielding quest for new horizons, less boat maintenance, and high-latitude sailing possibilities.

Sailing Nahoa is a captivating testament to the power of wanderlust and the uncharted oceans that beckon us all.

THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want to circumnavigate on a production catamaran (these guys are proof it can be done), or you’re curious to see what it’s like cruising full-time with two small kids.

14. sailing doodles.

Subscribers: 594K+

On YouTube Since: Oct. 4, 2016

Sailing Doodles  is a YouTube channel and brand created by Texas native Bobby White.

Previously a private pilot, Bobby got a wake-up call when he suffered a stroke and could no longer perform his job. Determined to make the most of his circumstances, he chose to seize the moment and embrace a new chapter by purchasing a sailboat.

Screenshot of Sailing Doodles YouTube video with aerial shot of sailboat in the ocean.

Sailing Doodles has had a constant rotation of guest crew over the years. And Bobby has become somewhat famous in the YouTube and sailing world for surrounding himself with beautiful women on board.

HIGHLIGHTS: Bobby has owned and sailed many boats over the years, including a motor yacht that he cleverly named “The Dark Side.” This channel features primarily coastal cruising in exotic locations such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

The channel is named for Bobby’s two Labradoodles, Maverick and Goose. Unfortunately, he lost these loyal sailing companions in 2020 and 2022, respectively. (I still hope Bobby decides to add a furry sailing crew back on this channel someday.)

THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want a side of entertainment while watching sailing on YouTube. Don’t expect too many boat project tutorials on this channel!

Screenshot of Sailing Magic Carpet YouTube video with Maya in the cockpit of vessel under sail.

The channel beautifully captures their journey as they navigate the world’s oceans aboard their Swedish sailboat,  Magic Carpet,  a 1976 Vindo 32.

Maya and Aladino’s authentic chemistry and deep affection for the sailing lifestyle radiate in every episode.

Tuning into the Sailing Magic Carpet channel feels like a nostalgic journey to the roots of sailing’s romantic allure and the tranquil beauty of life on the water.

The 10 Biggest Sailing YouTubers Right Now

Feeling a little bit blue after your yacht charter holiday? Thanks to the world wide web, you can always go on a virtual-navigation on your sofa whenever you want. Here are the top 10 sailing YouTubers who share their glorious sailing lives to millions of viewers. How does it feel like to live on your boat for five years? Is it expensive to sail around the world? Find out all the answers in their videos!

1. Sailing La Vagabonde

They are an Australian couple with the dream of circumnavigating the globe by sailboat… initially having no clue of how to sail. Elayna and Riley have now sailed over 88,395nm each across many oceans. Through their videos, they hope to inspire their fellow sailors to explore alternative options of living and to spread ocean awareness. They update the followers of their lives every Monday/Tuesday.

2. Sailing Project Atticus

Jordan and Desiree spent 3 years fixing up their 30-foot sailboat “Atticus,” and left their home, America, with only 2,000 dollars. That money took them to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Then they had to do boat repairing jobs to save enough money to sail again. Now they are still sailing around the world on a budget and working along the way to make ends meet. They believe you don’t need a lot of money to follow your dreams, you just need a LOT of HARD WORK!

3. Finding Avalon

Jackson and Xanthe, a young couple who met in an aprés-ski bar in the Snowy Mountains of Australia and instantly bonded over a love for adventure, travel and the ocean. Jackson is and always has been a sailor, and it didn’t take long for him to make a sailor out of Xanthe. The idea of buying a yacht and sailing around the world was dreamt up by Jackson when he was traveling globally to compete in sailing regattas.

So they bought Finding Avalon in Croatia in the middle of 2018. She is a 38ft Elan Impression from 2005 and a former charter boat. Jackson and Xanthe have traveled to many rather incredible places along the way.

4. GoSea Sailing

The GoSea family has three people and two pets, they share 28 feet of space as they embark on a mission to see as much of the world as possible. From sailing with a monkey in Africa, swimming with great white sharks buying and fixing a boat that they bought for $1 – The GoSea family film it all.

5. Sailing Zatara

After Renee and her husband entered their mid-40s, they realized they were completely exhausted with corporate America. Something definitely had to change. So, they sold their house in Texas and bought a sailboat, regardless of having no prior sailing experience and set sail with their 4 kids. Since the beginning of this crazy impromptu adventure in late 2016, the family has now sailed over 30,000 nautical miles: the first year in a monohull (Beneteau 55′), the rest in a catamaran (Privilege 585).

6. Lazy Gecko Sailing & Adventures

Meet Jeremiah, Brittany, and their kids! They are a family that sold everything that they own, bought a sailboat, moved aboard, and are now traveling full-time! They not only sail places but also explore this crazy world by other means.

7. Free Range Sailing

Watch how Troy and Pascale cruise remote Australia in their tiny home, a 30′ yacht named Mirrool. This couple takes a minimalist approach to life and focuses on the experience of doing more with less. They spend months on their boat in remote locations where self-sufficiency is a way of life. And they are very willing to share the lessons they’ve learned with the viewers.

8. MJ Sailing

After Matt & Jessica Johnson circumnavigating the North Atlantic in their last boat Serendipity, (1989 Sabre Targa 34), this couple took on a 2 year complete refit of their new boat, Elements of Life. She is a custom aluminum 37′ Trisalu, built in Quebec in 1983. They have sailed 20,500nm since 2012….and counting!

9. Sailing Doodles

The Sailing Doodles are currently on a 10-month sail from Vancouver Canada all the way to Thailand with their two full-sized Labradoodles named Maverick and Goose. Follow along with them as they sail down the west coast of the USA, down into Mexico, and across the Pacific Ocean to Asia. You can even sail with them for $125/day, check out  their website  for more information.

10. Gone with the Wynns

Jason and Nikki Wynn, a couple of perpetual travelers, Sailors, RV’ers and modern day documentarians. They believe that sailing is like exploring the world like its 1492. This form of travel is all about the journey. Moving a pace set by the breeze, weathering storms and 100% prepared to discover the adventures we don’t yet know exist. They sail a 2005 Robertson and Caine Leopard 43 Sailing Catamaran, and they share their trips on YouTube frequently.

Excursions by Catamaran: Hubbard Glacier & Enchanting Disenchantment Bay

Cruising Hubbard Glacier

Activity Level

Excursion Type

Wheelchair Accessible

Starting At

Minimum Age

Information Not Currently Available

Meals Included

Meals not included

Board an Alaskan-built expedition vessel for stunning, unmatched perspective of Hubbard Glacier -- one of Alaska's most famous landmarks.

From the mouth of Disenchantment Bay , you will cruise in comfort amid shimmering icebergs and dramatic wilderness.

You will board a day-boat directly from the ship. Relax in the warm, comfortable cabin, surrounded by large windows, as the naturalist and crew orient you to the stunning scenery and prolific wildlife. You'll cruise near the rocky shoreline and weave through a maze of icebergs that have fallen from the face of the glacier -- the perspective from the smaller vessel is astounding.

Ice conditions permitting, the captain will navigate the narrow cut between Haenke Island and the mainland en route to Hubbard Glacier. Offering a variety of viewing angles for photos and video, this "river of ice" is often very active, calving icebergs with an almighty crash. Unlike many other glaciers, Hubbard Glacier is advancing. At times, this advance has been up to 7 feet a day, earning it the nickname, 'the Galloping Glacier.'

Along the glacially-carved coastlines, an endless expanse of spruce and hemlock trees, snowcapped mountains, and glaciers are the subject of the naturalist's compelling narration. On a clear day, you may see Mount St Elias -- the second tallest peak in the United States.

Hot beverages are included; a selection of food is available for purchase (at your own expense).

This tour departs directly from the cruise ship in a remote wilderness area. Little walking is required; however, participants must be able to walk across a narrow, moderately-steep gangway to (dis)embark the vessel with only minor assistance. Wheelchairs, walkers and strollers are not allowed to be used on gangway. Weather, sea and ice conditions may alter both the duration and route of the journey, including shipside (dis)embarkation areas. The cruise ship also stops within view of Hubbard Glacier and will be in sight from the excursion boat during the excursion. Binoculars are available for use on board. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. USD cash and credit cards accepted for onboard purchases.

Which Catamaran Cruise Should I Choose?

Whichever catamaran cruise you choose, you’ll have the time of your life! Their differences have to do mainly with whether you choose a Semi-Private (Shared) or a Private Cruise, the food and drinks offered on board the boats, the passenger capacity, the vessel’s size, and the point of departure.

  • - Semi-Private (Shared) or Private Cruise : If your plan is to spend some enjoyable moments as part of a group and share their energy, then a Semi-Private Catamaran Cruise would be the perfect match! For those wishing to add some privacy to their cruise, or who want to organize a special celebration on board, the best choice would be a Private Cruise for only them and their loved ones!
  • - Food : Buffet or BBQ meal, some of them include filet of fish, while others chicken filet or pork.
  • - Drinks : On all of the cruises you will be offered unlimited local wine and soft drinks, while some of them include beers, and others, cocktails.
  • - Passenger capacity : Fewer passengers means more comfort, but more passengers means more fun and a chance to meet new people - the choice is yours!
  • - Luxury catamarans are larger and more deluxe and thus offer more comfort.
  • - Departure port : If you stay in Oia or Imerovigli, it will be preferable to book a catamaran cruise that departs from Ammoudi port, as the travel distance with the operator’s pick-up vehicle is shorter. For people staying in the southern part of the island, the most convenient option would be a cruise departing from Vlychada port since it is the nearest port to that location.

Cargo Ships, Catamarans, & More: 10 Unique Alternatives To Regular Cruising

T here are plenty of amazing ways to explore the water bodies of the world. While the majority of travelers go with the more popular cruising options, it is exciting to try something new occasionally. These cool alternatives to cruising are super exciting, and even the most adventurous of travelers will fall in love with one of them. Without further ado, here are some epic cruising alternatives to try on one's next adventure.

Submarine Dives

Navy personnel are not the only people that get to enjoy submarine cruises. Travelers can too, and the experience is memorable. Submarine dives offer amazing opportunities to explore parts of the water that ships and divers cannot go to, which can sometimes be up to a thousand feet below sea level.

This adventure is sure to make one feel like a Navy SEAL embarking on a dangerous mission.

Submarine trips in the US aren't super common. However, they do exist. Travelers will have the ultimate experience if they book the best submarine tours in the US .

Whitewater Rafting

Although it does not come with the luxurious amenities of regular cruises, whitewater rafting adventures generate thrills that cruises do not offer. Rafters get a ton of exercise as their muscles battle rapids, and they get splashed with water - rather than just lazying about on a luxury cruise.

There are many destinations around the world where one can spend an entire vacation whitewater rafting. One such place is Costa Rica, where there are plenty of epic whitewater rafting destinations with different classes of rapids. Other places with the best whitewater rafting in the world include the Colorado River in the United States, the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, and the Mitta River in Australia.

Whitewater rafting may seem similar to kayaking (albeit much more strenuous and exhilarating), but the latter is much different. Kayaking, unlike whitewater rafting, is generally a calmer and more relaxing way to explore the earth’s waterbodies. Although some brave souls use kayaks over vast water bodies, it is generally safer to kayak in smaller waterbodies where there are fewer waves.

Kayaking is a great alternative to cruise ships because it gets people so close to the water and its surroundings. Plus, kayakers can go to places that ships cannot go to. Canoes are very similar to kayaks, so this also applies to them.

Catamaran Trips

Catamaran boats are double-hull boats, so they are perfect for those who want more space while on their cruise. On catamarans, there is more living space, which makes cruising on these vessels great for families with kids.

Besides the extra space, Catamaran boats are more balanced on the water; hence cruising on these vessels feels more relaxing, even in unstable waters. Due to the reduced rock and roll effects that the sea waves have on catamarans, those onboard will be less likely to suffer from seasickness, too.

Amazon River Cruises

As the name suggests, these are cruises that take passengers through the mighty Amazon River . These cruises are exciting as they offer opportunities to explore the incredible plant and animal life of the largest rainforest in the world.

The Amazon River cruise is arguably the greatest wildlife expedition in the world because there is no place on earth as biodiverse as the forest it goes through. Those onboard these riverboats will feel like some of the greatest explorers in history while on the trips.

River Cruises

While the Amazon River Cruise focuses on one particular river, it is important to note that there are other rivers around the world where one can enjoy exciting cruises.

Although it may seem familiar, river cruises are quite different from the more popular sea cruises because one will be able to see a lot of greenery, wildlife, and cities on the way instead of just being in a massive ship in the middle of a vast sea.

Sailboat Cruises

As more people turn to environmentally friendly modes of traveling , sailboats have become increasingly popular -and they are also exciting. One does not have to be Greta or an avid environmentalist to enjoy sailing. It’s a peaceful and unique experience to cruise on these vessels, especially those with luxury amenities.

Sailboat cruising brings one closer to the water and makes one feel like humans of old who used these vessels to explore the world.

Cargo Ship Travel

Traveling by cargo ship is one of the most unique adventures in the world . It is an opportunity to truly enjoy the serenity of the sea. While they may not come with loads of amenities like cruise ships, the lack thereof is kind of what makes cargo ships so peaceful. This means that even though there may be no Wi-Fi or nightclubs, one will not have to deal with crowded swimming pools and noisy bars.

It is instead a slow and peaceful ride to the next port with plenty of opportunities to get involved in the everyday running of the ship.

Jet Boat Rides

Jetboats are small and fast, and this makes them thrilling ways to explore the waters of the earth. While their small size enables them to reach places regular ships can’t go, their powerful engines make them move with incredible speed.

The excitement that those few minutes riding on these vehicles can bring is arguably more than what hours of regular ship cruises can offer.

Houseboat Rental

Houseboats are on water what RVs are on land. They are homes that are not permanently positioned in a single location but can move to wherever the owner wants. Instead of housing hundreds and even thousands of people at once, as cruise ships do, these houseboats make the experience more personal by only accommodating a few people.

Whether people are spending the vacation with family, friends, or business partners, a houseboat is the perfect way to do it away from land and cruise ships.

Step aboard Virgin Voyages' adults-only, luxury cruise ship, which has 17 decks, a tattoo parlor, and a playground for grown-ups

  • I sailed on a luxury, adults-only Virgin Voyages cruise ship called the Valiant Lady.
  • It can hold more than 2,700 guests with unique amenities like a tattoo shop and an adult playground.
  • Here's a tour of the ship's 17 decks full of cabins, restaurants, and communal spaces.

Insider Today

In August 2023, I took my first cruise with Virgin Voyages , a relatively new luxury cruise line I've heard about from friends and other travelers for the last couple of years.

Virgin Voyages launched in 2021 as an adults-only cruise line , according to its website . Since then, it's won several awards, including five from Cruise Critic for its cabins, dining, service, and ships in 2023.

Virgin Voyages has four "lady" ships: Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady. A representative from Virgin Voyages told Business Insider that the ships are pretty much identical, aside from some differences in artwork and entertainment.

I cruised on Valiant Lady, which began sailing in March 2022. Like the other ships, it can hold more than 2,700 guests.

Virgin Voyages ships sail in Europe and the Caribbean. I took a seven-day Mediterranean cruise that left out of Barcelona.

youtube catamaran cruises

My ship sailed round-trip from Barcelona, Spain, to ports in Italy and France, including Toulon, Ajaccio, and Marina di Carrara . The cruise ended with an overnight stop in Ibiza .

I booked a room with a balcony that typically costs about $5,910 for two people on my itinerary.

youtube catamaran cruises

The ship has 1,408 cabins and suites, according to the cruise line . I booked a mid-tier stateroom with a balcony — a step above sea-view cabins, which only have a window. BI received a media rate for the cruise.

The room I booked was 225 square feet, including the balcony. I thought the cabin made great use of the tiny space, including luxury details , from smart controls to a private terrace with a hammock.

But a lot of the fun takes place in the ship's communal areas.

youtube catamaran cruises

According to Virgin Voyages , the ships are 912 feet long and pack in 17 decks filled with cabins, restaurants, and communal spaces.

During my cruise, I never got bored. From shops and swimming pools to game rooms and swing sets, I thought there was so much to do.

To get up and down the ship's many decks, elevators take guests to 13 of the 17 levels.

youtube catamaran cruises

The lower three decks of the ship are only accessible to crew members , and the top deck is only accessible from the outdoor portion of deck 16.

Sparkling details like light projections in the elevator and iridescent panels along the staircase made me feel luxurious while getting around the ship.

The fun starts on deck five, the lowest deck with staterooms. It also houses the ship's spa.

youtube catamaran cruises

Hot stone massages, hydrating skin treatments, and indoor pools can all be found on deck five at Virgin Voyages' Redemption Spa .

These treatments and amenities come at an additional price. Massages and facials start at $155 and passes to access amenities start at $39.

Upstairs, decks six and seven are packed with communal spaces, including several show venues.

youtube catamaran cruises

A reporter at The Points Guy recently called Virgin Voyages' wide range of entertainment the best on any cruise line. During my voyage, I thought it was easy to see why. There were dance parties, live music, comedy shows, and more.

Many of the venues for these events are on decks six and seven, including the Red Room for performances; On the Rocks, a music bar; and the Manor, a nightclub and theater.

These lower decks also house many of the ship's restaurants and eateries, including fine dining rooms and an ice cream shop.

youtube catamaran cruises

From personal pizzas to juicy steak dinners, there's plenty to eat on decks 5-7.

There are more than 20 restaurants and eateries on the ship. Food and drinks are included in the price of the ticket, save for alcoholic and specialty drinks as well as select menu items in some establishments.

On deck six, High Street is a strip of high-end shops that is reminiscent of a mall.

youtube catamaran cruises

On High Street, I found a plethora of products from luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, and Bulgari.

The strip also has a store dedicated to the Virgin brand that sells records and other merchandise.

On the same deck, Valiant Lady has a tattoo parlor called Squid Ink.

youtube catamaran cruises

Virgin Voyages' ships are the first-ever cruises where you can get a tattoo on board, according to the cruise line . According to Cruise Gear , tattoo pricing starts at around $150.

Upstairs, deck seven is a gamer's paradise.

youtube catamaran cruises

On deck seven, I found the arcade. It's a narrow, dark room with neon lights and games lining each side. Here, I raced cars and battled with buttons.

On the same floor, there's a larger room packed with tables for playing board games and puzzles, which are stacked on shelves around the space. I spotted decks of cards and a wide variety of nostalgic games from my childhood, including Mouse Trap, Cranium, and Operation.

Deck seven also has an outdoor lounge known as the Dock.

youtube catamaran cruises

I thought the Dock was the most relaxing space on deck seven. It's an outdoor lounge at the back of the ship full of beds and sofas. The Dock serves small Mediterranean-inspired plates and hosts events.

I went to the Dock for a stargazing event. Guests got comfortable and looked up at the night sky while crew members told stories about the stars.

Decks 8-14 hold nothing but staterooms.

youtube catamaran cruises

Most of the rooms on these decks have their own balcony. Mine was on deck 12.

Up on deck 15, there are two pools surrounded by lounge chairs and whirlpools.

youtube catamaran cruises

The Aquatic Club is on deck 15 and has two pools separated by a bar — the main pool and the Well-Being Pool.

For a beach club vibe, I recommend the main pool because it's bigger and has music playing all the time. I was surprised to find that the pool felt relatively smaller than on a typical cruise ship, in my experience. But it was never too crowded to use — even in the afternoons — so this didn't bother me at all.

On the other side of the deck, The Well-Being Pool is smaller and has seating and jets in the water, so it felt to me like an extra-large whirlpool. But like the main pool, this one was never too crowded to go in either. And unlike the main pool, it was quiet, making it ideal for relaxing and cooling off.

Inside deck 15, there's the Galley, a large dining space with several eateries similar to a buffet.

youtube catamaran cruises

The Galley is Virgin Voyages' food hall. Similar to a typical cruise ship buffet , there are several stands with a wide range of offerings. But unlike most buffets, servers make the plates and hand them to the customers.

In the Galley, I had tacos, sushi, desserts, and breakfast foods. There's also a burger grill, a noodle bar, a panini shop, and a popsicle stand.

Additionally on deck 15, there's a standalone restaurant called Gunbae that serves family-style Korean barbecue dishes.

There was also a gym in the indoor portion of deck 15.

youtube catamaran cruises

B-Complex is the gym on board Virgin cruise ships. They have free weights and machines as well as fitness classes from yoga to spin sessions.

I don't like to work out on vacation unless it's a fun activity that makes me forget I'm exercising at all. So I didn't use the gym. But I thought B-Complex's offerings were consistent with gyms I've been to at home while offering a much better view — the ocean.

But I think you can get a more fun workout upstairs on deck 16.

youtube catamaran cruises

On deck 16, the Athletic Club is home to an outdoor training center with strength and gymnastics equipment as well as a boxing ring.

The deck has a playground for adults with gigantic netted swing sets and seesaws ...

youtube catamaran cruises

The adult playground was my favorite part of the ship. Against the backdrop of the sunset over the ocean, I bounced on seesaws and pumped my legs on large, netted swings with the breeze on my face. It made me feel like a kid again.

... and a wide variety of games and sports, like a giant chess board.

youtube catamaran cruises

The playground area has a basketball court and other more unexpected offerings like foosball and a gigantic chess board.

For thrill-seekers, there's a net you can walk — or crawl — around with a view of the ocean below.

youtube catamaran cruises

The net reminded me of a catamaran. From the outside, I didn't think stepping onto it would be scary. But as soon as I did, my gut dropped. So I immediately got on all fours and crawled to the other side. With butterflies swarming in my stomach, I thought this activity was way more thrilling than I was expecting.

In my opinion, deck 16 is home to the most relaxing spot — Richard's Rooftop.

youtube catamaran cruises

Richard's Rooftop is the VIP lounge on Virgin Voyages' cruise ships. The rooftop is reserved for passengers staying in suites — known as "Rockstars" by the cruise line .

Virgin Voyages gave BI access to Richard's Rooftop , and I thought it was the most relaxing place on the ship.

It's packed with cabanas, loungers, and whirlpools. It also has a bar and lounge-side service.

Lastly, the top deck, 17, holds the runway, a bright-red track that circles the ship.

youtube catamaran cruises

On deck 17, the track is the perfect place to run — or walk, if you vacation like me — with constant views of the wide-open ocean.

Norwegian safety body criticizes cruise ship that nearly ran aground in 2019 storm

A cruise ship carrying more than 1,370 people should never have left a northern Norway harbor five years ago despite storm warnings, forcing a major evacuation by helicopter

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- A cruise ship at the center of a dramatic evacuation off north Norway five years ago should never have left port because it was not up to safety standards, officials said Tuesday, adding that it could have developed into one of the worst disasters at sea in modern times.

In a report, the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority upbraided the Viking Sky, saying it was ”a ship's length from running aground.”

The ship left the northern city of Tromsoe carrying almost 1,400 people, despite storm warnings. It was headed for Stavanger in southern Norway when it had engine problems amid a storm on March 23, 2019, and issued a mayday call.

The ship anchored in heavy seas to avoid being dashed on the rocks in an area known for shipwrecks. Passengers saw a large wave crashing through glass doors and knocking people across the floor of an area where they had been instructed to gather.

Nearly 480 passengers were winched off the ship by helicopter despite high winds in a daring rescue operation. The captain then decided to halt the evacuation, and about 900 people were still on board when the ship limped into the Norwegian port of Molde on its own engines.

Dozens of people were injured during the ship’s harrowing ordeal, including 36 who were admitted to hospitals.

Norwegian authorities immediately launched a probe into the accident, which concluded Tuesday that the ship was unprepared to sail in rough seas.

“The accident was caused by insufficient lubricating oil in all of the operating diesel generators’ lubricating oil sump tanks, in combination with pitching and rolling in rough seas,” investigators wrote. “The investigation has identified operational, technical, and organisational safety issues that in different ways contributed to the blackout.”

"As Viking Sky did not comply with the applicable safety standards, it should not have departed Tromsoe under the prevailing circumstances,” the report said.

There was no immediate reaction from operator Viking Ocean Cruises.
