What Our Students Say

“I have been on a Superyacht for six months and I absolutely love it! The crew is great and the owners are wonderful. We left Florida two weeks ago and we are on a three month trip over to California! We made a stop in Cuba and the owners invited all of the crew to go on day trips with the guests to sight see! Now we are in the Cayman Islands. From here we head through the Panama Canal and then we go to Panama City, Papagallo Peninsula Costa Rica then Cabo San Lucas, before we end up to Southern California. This is such a great experience for me. I do stewardess work, cook for crew and guests, handle lines when docking and leaving as well as watch shifts while we’re underway. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the valuable training I received in my classes! Thank you!”

Jessica Benway – Stewardess

“I am so excited!!! I went for my first interview yesterday afternoon at an agency and got a call from them later on advising that they’d put me forward for a 2nd stewardess position and to expect a call from the captain. He rang this morning and we met at Starbucks and… they are flying me up on Friday! It’s happened so fast, but it felt right. The yacht is currently in Norfolk, Virginia and we will be heading out very soon to spend the season in New England. The captain was really laid back and very forthcoming. Apparently the yacht is privately owned by a wealthy guy (obviously) and isn’t chartered out very often. Mostly they do cocktail parties. He thinks we will be in the Mediterranean next year although he is waiting on confirmation from the owner. The pace on the yacht seems very relaxed. It will be a great place for me to learn as much as possible. I am so keen to get started. Thank you!”

Carlie – Stewardess

“Everything is going GREAT for me over here! We have travelled from Fort Lauderdale all the way along the East Coast up to Labrador, Canada over 4000 miles so far. My roster is split so I spend the first part of the day as a deckhand and the second part of the day as the second stewardess onboard a 154 foot SuperYacht. The owners are fantastic. I really enjoyed the interior crew course and feel so much more prepared for my stewardess role.”

Katie Ford – Stewardess and Deckhand

“I was totally impressed by the STCW training I received at the Superyacht Crew Academy. The instructors were excellent, the equipment top notch, and I truly feel confident that I would perform well in the case of an emergency aboard ship. Thank you Chris and Deb for being so helpful to me. As a foreign student coming to Australia for this training, your kindness was extra meaningful. I am now a Superyacht Agent in Noumea and spend a lot of time aboard superyachts. Even though I am not a member of the crews, my STCW training is right there in the back of my mind just in case there was an emergency; especially when refuelling, helping resupply the medical equipment or moving heavy equipment on and off the superyachts.”

Chloe Morin – Super yacht Agent Noumea Ocean Services

“You are by far the most professional and successful training facility that I have dealt with around the world. Keep up the amazing work!”

Nick Smith – Chief Officer M/Y Akula

“A big thank you for your professionalism to all people from the Superyacht Crew Academy. Your team really made this experience unforgettable.”

Laurent Dreyer – Fastrack Graduate

“My experience with Superyacht Crew Academy was amazing. I had a fantastic time on the deck crew course and learnt a lot more than I expected.”

Tom Armstrong – Deckhand

“In my first interview I got offered a job! I really liked the chief stewardess so I am on a 43m private Superyacht for the season. I have been on the boat for two weeks and so far all is going well. I am looking forward to a good season and I will be home for Christmas. Two other people who did the course with me, Emily and Adam also got jobs very easily! Thank you again for all of your support and giving us a great head start!”

Ashtyn Leary – Stewardess

“The instructors were excellent, very professional and thorough. My training at Superyacht Crew Academy made my job as stewardess aboard the Tango possible and enjoyable. It really helps to have the inside story from experts before you begin. I’m happy to recommend the Superyacht Crew Academy to anyone interested in working in this industry.”

Haley – Stewardess M/Y Tango

“I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at Superyacht Crew Academy. I am currently working on a 43m M/Y Eclipse which is situated in Israel during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. I am heading into my third week here, now crossing to Genoa, Italy for the boat show. I am a 3rd stewardess and loving it. We are now in Kotor in Montenegro near Croatia and it is absolutely stunning. I am loving my job and have been lucky enough to rotate with duties and will be doing service this week, in a few hours actually. Thank you for all your help!”

Lauren A – Stewardess

” I thought I would give you a quick update on my adventures. I’ve just finished a cruise on an expedition vessel and am back in Antibes looking for a new position as a stewardess. Thank you for the casual work experience I did while completing my interior course. It’s definitely a lot better now that I have the right qualifications and some experience. I’m finding that there is so much more available to me.”

Natasha Harris – Stewardess

“Thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was amazing and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore. The Boat has offered me an awesome opportunity to learn all there is to learn as well as an awesome salary, benefits, and program. Not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family…. I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salary, benefits or program!”

Yacht Crew Training

It is essential to have basic knowledge about working on yachts. A few training schools offer a one-day introductory course that teaches basic seamanship, industry regulations, chains of command and personal appearance expectations.

From entry level yacht jobs to management yacht crew, here is the training you need to be considered for your first job or advance to the next level. The more training you have, the more attractive you will be as a potential crew member.

To land an entry level yacht job, some initial training will help boost your resume and put you ahead of someone that has absolutely no maritime training.  Here are the essential courses:

STCW 95 Basic Safety Training

Most yacht Captains and owners expect that all their crew have taken the Basic STCW95 Safety course as a bare minimum. STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers which was a convention that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted in 1995. This basic safety training encompasses four separate modules:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
  • Fire Prevention and Basic Fire Fighting
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

The course focuses on basic safety skills and knowledge in order to provide a framework for safe working practices, emergency procedures and teamwork within the maritime environment. Generally the course takes five to seven days to complete and costs around $1,000.

Yacht Rating Certificate

For someone that wants to be hired as an unlicensed Junior Engineer or a Deckhand, the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate encompasses a number of topics. It is an entry level qualification that covers seamanship, navigational watch duties, engine watch duties, pollution prevention, lifesaving and fire-fighting equipment. Many training centres offer a five-day training program to get this certificate.

Interior Yacht Job Training

There are a number of certifications that are beneficial in getting hired for an interior yacht job of a Steward or Stewardess. To take your career to the next level as Butler, Chief Stewardess, or Purser, even more Professional Yachting Association (PYA) qualifications are required.

Yacht Junior Steward Certificate

Although no sea time is required to get the Yacht Junior Steward Certificate, there are a number of courses that are required. Here are the PYA GUEST Introductory Level Courses needed for this certificate.:

  • Interior Introduction
  • Interior Basic Food Service (Silver Service)
  • Food, Safety and Hygiene
  • Wine and Cocktail Introduction
  • Floral Design and Care (Optional)
  • Introduction Barista Training (Optional)
  • Housekeeping/Plus Services (Optional)
  • STCW95 Basic Training

Yacht Senior Steward Certificate

To achieve this certificate, the individual needs 12 months of yacht service plus 60 days of guest service time. Additionally, these are the PYA GUEST Level II courses needed:

  • Barista and Tea Master
  • Cocktail and Spirit Intermediate
  • Interior Intermediate
  • Wine Intermediate
  • Powerboat Level II
  • MCA Medical First Aid

Yacht Chief Steward Under 500gt Certificate

To achieve this next level certification, additional sea time and courses are required. The individual must have completed 12 months yacht service and 60 days guest service time while in the position of Senior Steward.  Here are the required additional PYA G.U.E.S.T Level III and MCA courses:

  • Yacht Interior Management
  • Wine Advanced
  • Cocktail and Spirit Advanced
  • Management of Food Safety in Catering
  • MCA Medical Care
  • MCA Advanced Fire Fighting
  • MCA Sea Survival

Yacht Chief Steward over 500 gt Certificate

To apply for interior management positions on yachts above 500 gt, the individual must have the Yacht Chief Steward Over 500gt Certificate. To get this certificate the individual must complete additional courses and take a written and oral exam. These are the courses:

  • MCA Human Element and Leadership Management
  • Yacht Accounting & Budget
  • Introduction to International Safety Management (ISM)

Yacht Deckhand Training

The career path to becoming an Officer and ultimately a Captain typically begins as an entry level Deckhand.  As there is considerable competition for deckhand jobs, candidates should consider the following courses to increase skill sets and make their resume stand out:

RYA Powerboat Level II (RIB) or IYT Tender Driving

For someone that wants to be considered for a position as a Deckhand, the Powerboat Level II or Tender Driving course is an asset. It is a professional certification that allows you to operate the Rigid Inflatable Boats (aka: RIB or “toys” onboard the yacht), something a Deckhand is typically expected to do. It is generally a two day course that costs around $600.

RYA Short Range VHF Operators Radio Certificate (SRC)

This is another course that looks great on an entry level resume. The VHF Radio Course teaches the basics of VHF radio operation with respect to channels used, search and rescue and emergency procedures. It is typically a one day course that costs about $200.

RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course

The contents of this course can be taught over two days, although there are opportunities to take this course online as well. Topics covered are charts and publications, engine checks, passage planning, anchoring, pilotage, rules of the road, and weather forecasts.

This is typically a one day course that teaches the basics of radar operation. Learn how radar works and terminology such as target definition, radar reflectors, radar plotting and use of radar in navigation for collision avoidance.

For Deckhands that are serious about advancing to the next level as an Officer of the Watch, sea time and many additional courses are required. In the very basic of description, the career path of qualification proceeds from Officer of the Watch (OOW) to Chief Mate with the highest licence being Master Unlimited. Check the resources at the bottom of this page for additional information.

Junior Engineer Training

In addition to the Yacht Rating Certificate, Junior Engineers can educate themselves in any number of areas to make them more suitable for a yacht job. Look for courses in diesel, refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing, electronics and outboards. There are a few yacht certifications that will be needed to get to the next level of a career as an Engineer.

  • RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance
  • Marine Engine Operator License – Yachts (MEOL)
  • MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC)

The next level for a Junior Engineer is become a Second Engineer (Unlimited) and then Chief Engineer. As for Chief Engineer certifications it starts with Chief Y4, Chief Y3, Chief Y2, Chief Y1, and finally a Chief Engineer Unlimited. For more info on this career path, see the resource section at the bottom.

How to become a yachtie.

  • November 1, 2023

“Ahoy there, future yachties! Are you ready to embark on an exciting and luxurious career on the high seas?” If the idea of working on a yacht, traveling to exotic locations, and catering to the needs of the rich and famous sounds like a dream come true, then you’re in the right place. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the ins and outs of the yachting industry, from the essential skills and certifications needed to make a splash, to tips on building a strong resume and making valuable connections in the yachting world. We’ll also discuss the various career paths available, from starting out as a deckhand to eventually taking the helm as a captain. Finally, we’ll delve into the yachtie lifestyle, and how to strike the perfect balance between work and play while living and working on the world’s most luxurious vessels. So grab your deck shoes and let’s set sail on this exciting journey to becoming a yachtie!

How to become a Yachtie

1. Discovering the Yachting Industry: Opportunities and Requirements

The yachting industry offers a wide range of career opportunities for those who are passionate about the sea and luxury vessels. From deckhands and engineers to chefs and stewardesses, there is a position for every skill set and interest. To begin your journey in this exciting field, it is essential to understand the requirements and qualifications needed for each role. This will help you determine which path is best suited for your skills and aspirations.

Before diving into the world of yachting, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the certifications and training necessary for your desired position. For example, aspiring deckhands should obtain their STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) certification, while engineers may need to complete an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) approved course. Additionally, it is essential to have a valid passport, a seafarer’s medical certificate, and potentially a visa, depending on the country you plan to work in.

Once you have acquired the necessary qualifications, it is time to start networking and job hunting . Many yachties find their first job through word-of-mouth or by connecting with others in the industry. Attending boat shows, yachting events, and joining online forums can help you make valuable connections and learn about job openings. Furthermore, registering with a reputable yacht crew agency can increase your chances of finding the perfect position. Remember to create a professional CV and be prepared for interviews, as competition in the yachting industry can be fierce.

2. Essential Skills and Certifications for Aspiring Yachties

Entering the world of yachting requires a unique set of skills and qualifications, which are essential for ensuring a successful career. Obtaining the necessary certifications is a crucial step in becoming a yachtie, as these credentials demonstrate your competence and commitment to the industry. Some of the most important certifications include the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) Basic Safety Training, which covers essential safety and survival skills, and the ENG1 Medical Certificate, which confirms your fitness to work at sea.

Aside from certifications, aspiring yachties should also focus on developing their soft skills and practical abilities . Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are highly valued in the yachting industry, as crew members must work closely together to ensure smooth operations and guest satisfaction. Additionally, proficiency in various tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and maintenance is crucial, as yachties are often expected to perform a wide range of duties on board. By honing these skills and obtaining the necessary certifications, you will be well on your way to a rewarding career as a yachtie.

3. Building a Strong Resume: Tips for Landing Your First Yacht Job

As a newcomer to the yachting industry, it’s essential to create a compelling resume that showcases your skills, experience, and passion for the job. Start by highlighting any relevant experience you may have, such as working in hospitality, customer service, or a related field. If you have any certifications or licenses, be sure to include them as well. When crafting your resume, consider the following tips:

  • Keep it concise: Aim for a one-page resume that’s easy to read and understand.
  • Use a professional format: Choose a clean, modern design that highlights your most relevant information.
  • Include a personal statement: Write a brief introduction that explains your interest in the yachting industry and what makes you a great candidate for the job.

Networking is a crucial aspect of landing your first yacht job, so attend industry events and connect with professionals in the field. This can help you learn about job opportunities, gain valuable insights, and make a lasting impression on potential employers. Additionally, consider joining online forums and social media groups dedicated to yachting to expand your network and stay informed about the latest industry news.

Finally, be persistent and proactive in your job search. Apply to multiple positions, even if they’re not your ideal role, as this can help you gain experience and make connections within the industry. Don’t be discouraged by rejection – it’s a natural part of the job search process. Instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and improve your resume and interview skills. With determination and a strong resume, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a successful yachtie.

4. Networking in the Yachting World: Making Connections that Matter

Establishing a strong network is crucial for success in the yachting industry. Building relationships with fellow yachties, captains, and industry professionals can open doors to new opportunities and help you advance in your career. Attend industry events, such as boat shows and yacht crew meetups, to meet like-minded individuals and expand your network. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and engage in conversations, as this can lead to valuable connections and potential job offers.

Utilizing social media platforms is another effective way to network in the yachting world. Join Facebook groups, follow industry influencers on Instagram, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn to stay informed about the latest news and job openings. Be active in these online communities by sharing your experiences, asking questions, and offering advice. This will not only help you learn from others but also showcase your expertise and passion for the industry.

Finally, consider creating a checklist to track your networking efforts and ensure you’re making the most of every opportunity. This can include goals such as attending a certain number of events per month, connecting with a specific number of professionals online, or following up with contacts you’ve made. By setting measurable objectives and regularly reviewing your progress, you’ll be well on your way to building a powerful network in the yachting world.

5. Climbing the Yachtie Career Ladder: From Deckhand to Captain

Embarking on a career in the yachting industry can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the key aspects to success is understanding the various roles on a yacht and how to progress from one position to another. Starting as a deckhand , you will gain valuable experience and skills that will serve as the foundation for your future growth in the industry. As you continue to learn and develop your abilities, you will have the opportunity to advance to higher positions, such as mate, engineer, or even captain.

One of the most important factors in climbing the yachtie career ladder is gaining relevant qualifications and certifications . For example, obtaining your STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) certificate is essential for working on any yacht. Additionally, pursuing specialized training in areas such as navigation, engineering, or hospitality can significantly increase your chances of securing a higher position on a yacht. It is also crucial to network within the industry, as many job opportunities are found through personal connections and recommendations.

Lastly, developing a strong work ethic and demonstrating professionalism at all times will set you apart from other crew members. This includes being punctual, maintaining a positive attitude, and taking pride in your work. As you continue to excel in your role and gain the trust of your captain and fellow crew members, you will be well on your way to climbing the yachtie career ladder and achieving your ultimate goal of becoming a captain.

6. Living the Yachtie Lifestyle: Balancing Work and Play on the High Seas

Embracing the yachtie lifestyle requires a delicate balance between hard work and enjoying the perks of the job. While the days can be long and demanding, the rewards are often worth the effort. To maintain this equilibrium, it’s essential to develop a routine that allows you to excel in your duties while still finding time for relaxation and personal growth. A checklist can be a helpful tool to ensure you’re staying on track with your responsibilities and making the most of your downtime.

One of the key aspects of living the yachtie lifestyle is learning how to adapt to the unique challenges of working on a yacht. This includes mastering the art of multitasking, being prepared for unexpected situations, and maintaining a positive attitude even when the going gets tough. By staying organized and focused, you’ll be able to enjoy the incredible experiences that come with working on a luxury yacht, such as exploring exotic destinations, meeting new people, and indulging in world-class cuisine. Remember, the key to success in this industry is finding the right balance between work and play, so make sure to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
