Viking 45 Convertible

Has the world turned so completely upside down that an entry-level production boat has a price tag of more than $800,000? I began to think so when I looked at the Viking 45 Convertible on paper, at a base price of $810,000 with optional 800 hp MAN diesels. If you add the appropriate options and a decent electronics package, this 45-footer can creep up on the million-dollar mark.

But thinking in terms of price point only ignores the big picture and conflicts with Viking’s track record of producing high-quality, well-engineered yachts that hold their value. When developing the 45, the team could not conceive of developing a lesser boat simply to attract an entry-level market. Their goal was to produce a little Viking, benefiting from the larger Vikings, using many of the same components and incorporating lessons learned on models such as the 65 and 61. Having tested a few Vikings and crawled into the bilges of several others, I think the team hit its mark.

The engineroom, for instance, incorporates quite a few of the same items I’ve seen on the larger models. You need to squat a little to get into it, but personally, I couldn’t care less about standing height in an engineroom. My normal posture usually involves trying to service the engines or some hidden pump while blood rushes to my head. This won’t be the case on the 45, where the outboard sides of the 800hp MAN diesels are accessible and there is plenty of room forward of them, as well. Thanks to 22 inches between the engines, you can turn around and maneuver easily.

The 45’s engineroom is finished with bright, white Awlgrip to a glossy luster. This makes cleaning up easy. A sump for the air-conditioning condensation pans will help keep the bilges dry and the boat smelling fresh. Twelve-volt and 110-volt lighting provide more than enough light to find the smallest lost screw. A water manifold system, first installed on the 65, mounted on the forward bulkhead isolates any faucet or intake in the system if there is a leak, eliminating the need to shut down the entire system for one leaky faucet. These details amount to a higher price tag but make the difference.

The 675-gallon fiberglass fuel tank is under the forward portion of the cockpit. By building its own tanks as well as the majority of parts that go into each vessel, Viking can control not only the cost, but more important, the quality of the boat’s components. Viking also has the ability to make changes in design and engineering right away if needed, instead of having to wait at the mercy of a supplier.

The 128-square-foot cockpit benefits from lessons learned on the company’s larger models, as well. An insulated icebox in the step to the saloon means busy anglers will have no need to pop into the galley to rehydrate. You don’t have to worry about an unsightly shorepower cord, since it runs through a recessed hawsepipe and is secured under the gunwale, leading through a locker. I saw this same treatment on a Viking 65 docked nearby. Additional cockpit features include a freezer, a fishbox, five tackle drawers under a bait prep station, and gaff stowage. The bottom of edge of the gunwale is rounded, providing less wear and tear on the knees when fighting a fish.

On our run out on the Bass River near the Viking plant, we hit a top speed of 34.6 knots with the 800 hp MANs, a $14,000 upgrade over the 700s. I recommend the upgrade, since this is the type of item that usually comes up during resale. Based on our test, the 800s appeared to be an appropriate package for the 45. At 2100 rpm, we hit a cruising speed of 30 knots. The raked stem and 15-degree deadrise were consistent with this new era of Viking. While whipping around the tight bends in the river, I was thankful for the yacht’s quick response. At flank speed, she felt like she was on rails.

The companion helm chair on the flying bridge, located outboard, has plenty of clearance aft to move around without disturbing the helmsman. This feature may seem obvious, but there are some similarly sized convertibles with far less room. The electronics console is designed to absorb a large package behind hinged acrylic doors, which protect instruments from the saltwater environment.

A 7 1/2-foot-long, L-shape settee is forward of the helm, providing one of the best perches on board. There is a locker forward and a huge space under the helm. Stowing liferafts and safety gear for long canyon runs will certainly not be an issue.

The Viking 45’s formidable gene pool is very evident in the interior. The teak woodwork glows with the same UV-resistant coating as that on her larger, more expensive siblings. The saloon layout is a slight variation of an arrangement Viking appears to have perfected. An L-shape settee is on the port side, opposite the entertainment cabinet and electrical panel. The galley is nipped and tucked in a few spots compared with the space on the 48 and 52, but is still well thought out and has good working counter space afforded by the Sub-Zero under-counter refrigerator and freezer. The L-shape dinette can host four slim people.

The portside guest stateroom is similar in layout and size to the one aboard the Viking 48 I tested this year (“Simply Stunning”, July) and includes two awthwartships bunks, a hanging locker and a head with separate shower stall. The Corian-topped vanity on the 45 has a rounded front, a treatment Viking first used on its 65.

The master stateroom includes an island berth, an opening hatch at the head of the berth bringing in air and light, and a cedar-lined hanging locker. The head benefits from an overhead hatch and an air-conditioning vent.

After the first of the year and the introduction of several new models at the Miami International Boat Show in February, no model in the Viking Yachts lineup will be more than five years old. If, at first blush, this 45 seems a little pricey, do as I did and dig a little deeper. You’ll see that Viking only knows one way to build boats, no matter what the size: first-class.

DESCRIPTION

Introduced in 2003, the Viking 45 Convertible’s interior layout was radically redesigned for the 2008 model year. The salon’s L-lounge and dinette are to port with cabinetry and an open galley with island to starboard. Salon sliding door entry is to starboard and companionway to belowdecks accommodations is reversed to port, in keeping with the design of the larger newer Viking convertibles that were moving away from the straight-line layout of salon entry through to accommodations. This new layout provided better flow around galley and salon, while giving greater privacy to the belowdecks area. The galley island with two barstools can accommodate additional dining place settings if needed. Dinette to port can seat three comfortably. Other than the layout change, amenities and exterior are about the same.

The 45 Convertible features a two stateroom/two head layout. Both master and guest staterooms have a private head with stall shower. Master stateroom with queen-sized island berth, can be positioned forward or on starboard side, depending on model year. The guest stateroom with over/under bunk berths can be to port midships or port forward (2008 model year). Both versions include a laundry center with front loading washer/dryer stacked units and central vacuum system in companionway.

This classy mid-sized “entry-level” convertible yacht balances aesthetics with functionality to provide uncluttered comfort. The L-shaped Ultraleather settee in aft quarter of the salon, with rod storage underneath, converts to additional sleeping space for two and is opposite the entertainment cabinetry and electric panel. Open galley is U-shaped with large serving counter on forward port side or L-shaped with island on starboard side (2008 version). Amenities include Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerator and freezer deep drawers, concealed appliances (3-burner electric range, microwave/convection oven), sink with garbage disposal, Corian solid surface countertops, beautifully crafted teak cabinetry and drawer storage, and Amtico flooring for easy to maintain elegance. L-shaped dinette with pedestal mounted table can seat 3-4 persons. Seat cushions are removable, and storage is underneath settee. Salon flatscreen TV is mounted on bulkhead above dinette. Frameless windows provide plenty of natural light and are capped with upholstered valances that conceal the air-conditioning registers.

Exterior is the same for both versions of the Viking 45 Convertible. Large open flybridge is safely accessed from cockpit by a sturdy aluminum ladder through hatch in bridge aft deck overhang. Both versions of the 45C feature a helm console positioned aft and extending from portside to center. Forward wrap-around seating area can be accessed from starboard side of helm console. Lounge seat on starboard side is hinged for access to storage underneath and a top-loading drink box is underneath the aft facing jump seat. Centerline helm features instrumentation provided and installed by Viking’s Atlantic Marine Electronics with Simrad or Garmin touchscreen panels and other electronics, such as the Moritz safety monitoring system, in recessed electronics boxes with clear Lexan covers for weather and saltwater protection.

Other electronics and VHF are neatly stowed and readily accessible in console compartments. Helm features single-lever controls and power-assisted hydraulic steering and excellent visibility all-around including cockpit. Flybridge stereo speakers are tied-in to salon Bose system. Extended bridge aft deck provides walk-around space for the two Murray helm chairs. Options can include 3-sided EZ2CY or Costa Clear enclosure, drop-down electronics compartment and Miya Epoch teaser reels in hardtop, aft rail rocket launcher with 6 rod holders, and more as requested by owner.

The 219 square foot cockpit has been engineered and outfitted for tournament fishing. Bait prep station with five tackle drawers, in-sole insulated wells for harvested fish and live bait, transom door with lift gate, gaff stowage, flush rod holders, bait freezer, insulated drink box in top step to salon door, and more are standard amenities. Owners could customize cockpit amenities to their preferences, with outriggers and spreaders, fighting chair (an in-deck backing plate is provided), livewell in-sole, refrigerated step box, transom fishbox, swim platform and ladder, and more. Hatch in cockpit bait prep console lifts for engine room access.

The 45C has same engine room engineering as Viking’s larger convertibles, such as the structural steel engine beds that are secured to dedicated transverse composite bulkheads to maintain drivetrain alignment and isolate vibration. Earlier 45C models featured the twin 800hp MAN D2848LE 403 diesels, while the 2008 version had the twin 900hp MAN V8 900 CRM diesels with a comfortable cruising speed of 30 knots and a top speed of 35 knots. The proprietary Viking hull of the 45 Convertible features a raked forward stem, modified-V with 15-degree aft deadrise for stability, fuel efficiency, and the comfortable dry ride Viking is known for.

Viking 45 Convertible specifications are 45’10” length overall (LOA) and 49’7” with bow pulpit, 16’4” beam, and 4’6” draft. Fuel capacity is 665 gallons (2008 version capacity is 848 gallons), water capacity is 150 gallons and holding tank is 50 gallons. Gross weight with standard fuel load is 49,750 lbs. European charity ship rescues 135 migrants but is assigned to distant port in Italy with 359 aboard

ROME (AP) — The European charity ship Ocean Viking said Friday it rescued another 135 migrants, including a pregnant woman and eight children, from a double-decker boat in Maltese search-and-rescue waters.

In total, the vessel operated by the humanitarian group SOS Mediterranee was carrying 359 shipwreck survivors, it said, adding the ship had been assigned to the distant port at Ancona, in Italy’s central Marche region.

“Such a long navigation should never be imposed on persons rescued at sea,” the rescue organization wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Non-governmental organizations operating in the central Mediterranean Sea have repeatedly warned that the far-right-led Italian government’s policy of assigning ports farther north keeps their rescue ships out of waters where they can be saving lives.

Migrants, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, often flee war and poverty in their own countries in search of a better life in European nations via the Mediterranean Sea.

Rome has recently ordered the ships to port after each rescue, punishing groups that conduct other rescues by holding ships in port for 20 days at a time.

The Ocean Viking has been subject to three such blocks over three months, the most recently from Feb. 8 until a judge lifted the block 10 days later.

Friday’s rescue came a day after survivors saved from a deflating rubber dinghy in the central Mediterranean on Thursday reported that some 60 people who departed from Libya with them more than a week ago had perished during the journey.

The Ocean Viking spotted the dinghy with 25 people on board Wednesday. Two were unconscious and were evacuated to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, some 60 miles (97 kilometers) to the north. The other 23 were in serious condition, exhausted, dehydrated and with burns from fuel on board the boat.

An SOS Mediterranee spokesman said the survivors were traumatized and unable to give full accounts of what had transpired during the voyage, adding that the number of missing and presumed dead was unlikely to ever be verified.

Humanitarian groups often rely on accounts of survivors when pulling together the numbers of dead and missing at sea, presumed to have died.

The U.N. International Organization for Migration says 227 people have died along the perilous central Mediterranean route this year through March 11, not counting the new reported missing and presumed dead. That’s out of a total 279 deaths in the Mediterranean since Jan. 1. A total of 19,562 people arrived in Italy using that route in the period.
