Race Results

Send corrections, updates and boat information to [email protected] .

  • The following is a list of results for DuckDodge racing, going back to 1997.
  • Every attempt is made to identify the make, model and phrf-rating using a registry of active PHRF members ( Local Registry ). What are PHRF Ratings? ( Info | PDF )
  • Note: PHRF ratings are not 100% translatable to lake-racing, however, they help to establish a benchmark of a boat's performance relative to other racers.
  • It is our hope that this will help to raise the visibility of boats which drastically out-compete other boats in their class and aid in making a more competitive race for every participant.

Race Statistics

After evaluating the results for the given time period, we've looked at all the winning boats for their start and compared the boat's PHRF rating against the start's range of allowed ratings . If the boat was found to out-class all other boats in the start, they are included below.

Super Yachts with a PHRF rating <= 60, that choose to compete are also included, as they are the initial trigger for boats starting in 2nd start (as they can't be beaten by normal 1st start boats).

Based on this information, it is recommended that Super Yachts should not be included in race results, as they are the catalyst for other boats moving up a start in an effort to have a more competitive race. In addition, boats that outclass their start should be moved into a faster start.

Start Times

Shortly before the race, the committee boat will display the course from a sign on the side of the boat. Besure to note how many laps, as it change depending on the wind.

NOTE: Collisions are on the rise, especially in 2nd start (which contains a majority of the boats). If you're a racer, regardless of your start, please remember not everyone on the water knows the rules or how to maneuver in tight conditions, try to give room and be aware of different skill-levels.

CLASS BREAKS: Kevin Dolan's Distance (Buchan 37 with PHRF:126) is considered the slowest boat in 1st start. Any boat faster or equal to this boat should be in 1st start. If you are racing in any other start, please move up.

Race Schedule (Themes)

Every week, a theme is assigned for the given race with a "Black Duck awarded to the best boat. Unless you have a fast boat for your start, this is your best chance for a sticker.

Registration: Sail by the committee boat before the start and hail with your START NUMBER. Ensure that they acknowledge you, sail out of the area. Thanks it! There are no customers, unless you go really way off course.

Raft Up Information

After the race, about 50% of the boat choose to raft-up with the committee boat and continue their revelry . It's worth doing once. But mostly, it's for people that are more interested in dressing-up and drinking. Warning: The raft up is overwhelmingly represented by Bro's and Bra's who sometimes need adult supervision to keep boats from being broken, damaged or items stolen.

Historical Information

sailboat race seattle today

Actually, the original name was the "Tenas Chuck Duck Dodge". Tenas Chuck is the native american name for Lake Union (Chuck means "water", as in the Pilchuck, Skookumchuck, Chuckanut, Saltchuck, etc.) Duck Dodge one would assume means that in order to navigate the course one must either duck Dodges or dodge ducks. Since there are probably more ducks on Lake Union than Dodges, it is safe to assume the latter.

The original handbill announcing the first (technically second) Duck Dodge in 1974 actually has a sub-title of "Lake Union Beer Can Regatta". This was included because a friend of mine was worried that people wouldn't "get it" if we just called it the Duck Dodge.

Anyway, just some worthless trivia for you. I have much much more if anyone cares.

H1 Hydros Headed To Seattle For Biggest Event Of The Season

SEATTLE — The 2023 H1 Unlimited Racing Series will wrap up this weekend in Seattle with not only the sport’s most prestigious trophy on the line, but the national championship, as well. The world’s fastest race boats will compete in the HomeStreet Bank Cup on Lake Washington this coming Friday through Sunday and the winner will be presented with the APBA Gold Cup, the oldest trophy in American motorsports, which is being held in Seattle for the first time since 1985.

Corey Peabody of Covington, Wash., will arrive as a favorite based on his dominating performance this past weekend on the Columbia River in the Tri-Cities, Wash. Driving Beacon Plumbing, Peabody was the fastest qualifier for the race, won every preliminary heat he entered and was first across the finish line in the Columbia Cup’s winner-take-all final heat. Peabody was also the winner of the Southern Cup event in Guntersville, Ala., earlier in the season.

His teammate on the Strong Racing Team out of Auburn, Wash., is also expected to be in the thick of things. J. Michael Kelly of Bonney Lake, Wash., has won more career races than any other active driver, was the winner of the Seattle race a year ago and also hoisted the first-place trophy earlier this season in Madison, Ind. Driving Beacon Electric, Kelly also has earned enough points this summer to go into Seattle holding first place in the race for the 2023 national championship.

Third in that title race is the biggest surprise this season—Jamie Nilsen of Gig Harbor, Wash., in the Legend Yacht Transport presented by The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse, which operates from Cle Elum, Wash. Based on his consistent running, Nilsen was holding the top spot in the standings until this past weekend when his boat blew a gearbox while running in second place during the final heat. On Saturday, Nilsen drove the boat to a convincing victory in one of the event’s preliminary heats.

Dustin Echols of Monroe, Wash., is currently in fourth place in the national points chase. Driving Flav-R-Pac, he started the season in the cockpit of one of the fastest boats, where he made a qualifying run in Guntersville that was the fifth fastest in the history of the sport. The following weekend in Madison, however, the boat (named Bucket List Racing at the time) flipped end over end in the final heat and was heavily damaged. The crew got the boat repaired in time to finish second last weekend in the Tri-Cities.

The competition for the 2023 national championship is sure to capture much of the attention during the Seattle race. Fewer than 800 points, the equivalent of first-place finishes in two heats, separate the top four boats in the current standings. In short, with this one event remaining, the title is very much still up for grabs.

Rounding out the field for the APBA Gold Cup are the two entries from the Madison Racing Team of Madison, Ind., which has won 11 of the past 14 national championships. Dylan Runne of Rumson, NJ, will be driving Miss HomeStreet, the three-time defending champion, while Andrew Tate of Canton, Mich., will be in the cockpit of Miss Goodman Real Estate.

Returning to the sport last weekend after taking the 2022 season off was Graham Trucking, which is always a Seattle favorite and the winner of races on Lake Washington in 2015 and 2019. Driving the boat will be Bobby King of Shelby Township, Mich., a veteran of limited-class inboards who qualified as an H1 Unlimited driver last weekend.

Another rookie is Brent Hall of Seattle, who is attempting to become the first African American boat racer to qualify at the sport’s highest level. Driving Boitano Homes, which has struggled with gearbox problems during his first two attempts to qualify this season, Hall needs to complete just five more laps, four of them over 130 mph, in order to become a qualified driver in H1 Unlimited competition.

Joining the circuit for the first time in Seattle is another boat that will be driven by a rookie. Named The Beast Unleashed presents Miss Thriftway in honor of the boats driven by the legendary Bill Muncey in the 1950s and early ‘60s, the craft will be driven by Gunnar O’Farrell of Maple Valley, Wash. The boat has appeared in Seattle only once, as a brand-new hydroplane in 2019.

The APBA Gold Cup was organized by the American Power Boat Association in 1904 and was first held on the Hudson River in New York City. The winner of that event was a boat named Standard, which averaged just over 23 miles per hour.

Next weekend’s APBA Gold Cup, the 113th running of the race, will feature boats that are about 30 feet in length, weigh more than three tons, and are capable of flying across the surface of Lake Washington at speeds approaching 200 mph.

Nothing can beat the thrill of watching the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes in person, as they careen around the racecourse throwing spray high into the air. Tickets to the event can be purchased at Seafair.org.

For boat racing fans around the world who can’t attend in person, the action also can be watched on the sport’s live streaming network on the H1 Unlimited YouTube Channel. You can find the link at H1Unlimited.com.

Rowers in England's university Boat Race given health warning over E.coli levels in the Thames

Jumping into London’s River Thames has been the customary celebration for members of the winning crew in the Boat Race, the nearly 200-year-old rowing contest between storied English universities Oxford and Cambridge.

Now it comes with a health warning.

Testing by the River Action campaign group found high levels of E.coli along a stretch of the Thames in southwest London that will be used for the historic race taking place on Saturday.

E.coli bacteria normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Most strains are harmless, cause relatively brief diarrhea and most people recover without much incident, according to the Mayo clinic . But small doses of some strains — including just a mouthful of contaminated water — can cause a range of conditions, including urinary tract infection, cystitis, intestinal infection and vomiting, with the worst cases leading to life-threatening blood poisoning.

The teams from both competing universities have been given a briefing pack with guidance, issued by River Action among others, on the importance of covering cuts, grazes and blisters with waterproof dressings, taking care not to swallow river water that splashes close to the mouth, wearing suitable footwear when launching or recovering a boat, and cleaning all equipment thoroughly.

In a statement to the Guardian newspaper, organizers have said they support the research carried out by River Action and added that precautionary measures for this year’s race include “highlighting the risks of entering the water” and the use of a “cleansing station at the finish area.”

The race between the universities first took place in 1829 and is one of the oldest sporting events in the world, typically attracting 270,000 spectators along the 4.2-mile (6.8-kilometer) stretch of the Thames.

River Action said it conducted 16 tests around the Hammersmith Bridge on the Thames from Feb. 28-March 26, using a World Health Organization-verified E.coli analyzer.

Test results indicated an average of 2,863 E.coli colony forming units (CFU) per 100ml of water, the group said. The highest recorded spike reached 9,801 CFU, it added.

River Action said that, according to the Environment Agency, it is unsafe to swim in an inland water registering 1,000 CFU or higher.

The group didn’t say which of the many strains of E.coli it found.

“As a rower, the water I row on is my field of play, and the results of the E.coli testing show that rowers are putting their health at risk to do the sport they love," said Imogen Grant, a world champion rower who won the Boat Race with Cambridge three times. "More needs to be done to improve our water quality across the country, and testing like this gives us a picture of just how far we have to go.”

River Action said the testing locations suggested the source of pollution was from utility company Thames Water discharging sewage directly into the river and its tributaries. Thames Water said improving the health of rivers was one of its key focuses and that it was working hard to reduce unnecessary discharges.

As ever, the 6.8km course will run across west London from Putney to Mortlake.

The build-up to this year’s Boat Race has been marred, however, by the threat of E. coli to the participants .

When is the Boat Race?

This year’s Boat Race takes place on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

The women’s event is scheduled to start at 2.46pm with the men’s race at 3.46pm GMT.

How to watch the Boat Race

TV channel: In the UK, both races will be broadcast live and free-to-air on BBC One with coverage starting at 2pm.

Live stream: Viewers can watch online via the BBC Sport or iPlayer website and app.
