Motor Yacht A: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Motor Yacht A, sometimes just called MYA or simply “A”, is a superyacht that was designed by Philippe Starck, interior designer and architect, along with naval architect Martin Francis and built by the yacht makers Blohm Voss. The yacht was ordered back in 2004 and it took four years to come through with delivery of the massive vessel. It is famous today for being one of the biggest yachts on earth and also for the controversial look and design of the yacht.

What Did Motor Yacht A Cost?

motor yacht a sailing

Although most owners of these massive superyachts play numbers close to the chest, the number most frequently circulated when discussing Motor Yacht A is $300 million. So not only would that make the boat one of the largest in the world , it’s also in the rankings for one of the most expensive as well.

The actual price has never been confirmed, however, so it’s worth noting that this might not be correct, it’s just that the owner never stated otherwise. There have sometimes been other figures tossed around that are a little higher or a little lower but no one seems to have a source for any of them. Even the widely accepted $300 million seems to mostly be speculation based on educated guesses and a bit of insight into how the ship was designed and what it features. In any event, it’s safe to say it was quite an expensive vessel.

Motor Yacht A Interior

According to Starck, he was not really given a brief for the design of the yacht. Instead, he was told how long it needed to be, more or less, and that the buyer wanted six cabins. Everything else was up to him. Some initial stories said Starck designed the entire vessel in just a couple of minutes. That sounds impossible but also that’s what Stark is known for – producing fully realized designs in just minutes, sort of like a freeform design process where he puts everything on the paper right away. However, he later admitted the entire process was about a month long, so take from that what you will.

The yacht is 394 feet long so clearly there’s a lot more than just six cabins on board.  The interior covers a massive 24,000 square feet of space. It takes a staff of 35 to keep it all running. The master suite alone is 2,500 square feet. To give that perspective, the average square footage of an apartment in New York City is 866 square feet, and it’s been that size since the year 2000.

motor yacht a sailing

Starck designed a secret room for the suite as well, hidden behind a mirror. It’s meant for couples to have some privacy, if you follow our meaning. Mirrors and crystals are used everywhere on board, even in the furniture. There’s a hidden cabinet in the living room area that opens up to reveal a massive bar that is nearly all crystal, mirrors and glass.  There are seven guest cabins but there is a modular wall system that allows for them to be merged into four larger rooms.

Where mirrors aren’t being used you can find animal skins. One guest room has walls made entirely from white stingray leather.  There’s even a custom designed chair somewhere made from alligator hide and kudu horns.

Electronics are included stealthily, like the 60 inch TV that can rise up into the ceiling to be hidden away when not in use.

Even simple features are more elaborate than you might expect. The walls lining a staircase are made of scalloped silver. The handrail is hand carved and cost $60,000. The shower faucets were custom designed to fit the silver trim and even patented. They cost $40,000.

Like many of the large superyachts, the deck is outfitted with a helipad for transport to and from the yacht at sea. There are also three swimming pools in total including one that has a glass bottom and was built above a disco so you can dance and watch people swim, or vice versa, though the glass bottom is only over a fairly small area so you’d most likely just be looking up at someone treading water. That pool is also a massage pool with his and hers massage chairs.

motor yacht a sailing

The tender garage on Motor Yacht A features three launch boats and a lot of open space. So much space, in fact, that if the launch boats are cleared out, the space doubles as a party room with a large dance floor.

Most Russian billionaires opt for some serious yacht security and things were no different with Motor Yacht A. Though many of the details were kept under wraps it was rumored that the yacht had been outfitted with 44 mm bomb-proof glass on all the windows. There’s also supposedly an escape pod of some type that can be used to flee the yacht in case of emergencies but details on what that means are pretty hard to come by. In addition to that there are rumored to be dozens of security cameras, motion centers and fingerprint keypads to enter secure spaces.

How Fast is Motor Yacht A?

The ship runs on a pair of MAN RK280 diesel engines. These supply around 9,000 kW (12,000 hp). The top speed is around 23 knots with a cruising speed of 19 knots. With a 750,000 L/200,000 gallon fuel capacity, Super Yacht A has a range of 6,500 nautical miles.

Who Owns Motor Yacht A?

motor yacht a sailing

At the time the yacht was commissioned back in 2004, no one knew who the buyer was. In fact, it took the entire four year construction process before it became public knowledge who owned the vessel, this after much incorrect speculation.

The true owner of the yacht was Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. He made his fortune in coal and chemicals and was one of the richest people in Russia at the time.

Why is it Called Motor Yacht A?

Most boats have creative names. The naming of any vessel is part of the fun, after all. Even serious vessels like military ships and cargo vessels have names, so why would a billionaire give a luxurious superyacht such a plain, boring name? It’s actually a bit of a sneaky, vanity thing. It’s called “A” so that it always features at the top of boat registries. No matter where it’s listed, it’s going to be first.

What was the Controversy Over the Luxury Yacht A?

As mentioned in the intro, there was some controversy regarding the look of the yacht when it made its debut, at least in boating and yacht circles. Nothing serious, of course, just among traditionalists and more avant garde boat fans who disagreed about the design.

There were some boating journalists and yacht owners who thought A was the ugliest boat they had ever seen, in particular because of the axe bow. And it’s true that the exterior design is very unusual for a yacht. It has lines more reminiscent of a submarine that has surfaced as opposed to a traditional yacht. That, combined with the price tag, made critics feel like it was a massive waste or misuse of money. Other people, however, were excited by such an unusual design and innovative engineering shaking up what was otherwise kind of a stagnant design field. Plus, when the unique interior was factored in, it really makes A a standout vessel.

What is Sailing Yacht A?

motor yacht a sailing

Launched in 2015, Sailing Yacht A is the sister yacht to Motor Yacht A. It is also owned by Andrey Melnichenko and it was also designed by Philippe Starck. At 469 feet, it is larger than Motor Yacht A and it’s also the largest sailing yacht in the world.

The Bottom Line

Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko commissioned the A back in 2004 and took possession in 2008. As far as anyone knows, it cost about $300 million. The vessel has an incredibly unique exterior design as well as many luxurious interior features that make it a standout mega yacht. At around 390 to 394 feet (sources differ on the exact length) it’s also one of the largest yachts in the world and currently ranks at about the 29th largest as of 2022.

Dubbed the world’s most famous superyacht, the 119 metre Motor Yacht A looks like a cross between a floating submarine and futuristic spaceship. Here, Motor Yacht A's iconic profile can be seen silhouetted against a sunset.

Turning heads since it first hit the water in 2008, Motor Yacht A was built by Blohm & Voss . Here, the yacht's striking underwater lights are illuminated as night falls.

Speaking about the design of Motor Yacht A , designer Philippe Starck says his intention was to make the yacht blend with the sea. He was focused on the way the yacht moved through the water, with barely a ripple, “like a whale”, he says.

Like the 142.81 metre sail-assisted motor yacht Sailing Yacht A, Motor Yacht A was designed by legendary designer Philippe Starck (pictured) and was built by Blohm & Voss. Both superyachts are owned by Andrey Melnichenko.

SAILING YACHT A – World’s Largest $600M Sail Assisted Superyacht

https://yachtbible.com/sailing-yacht-a/

Italian authorities seized a 530 million-euro ($580 million) superyacht owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko as pressure on Russia’s elite continues following the invasion of Ukraine.

The vessel may be the world’s biggest sailing yacht and was seized in the port of Trieste in Northern Italy, according to a statement from Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office.

motor yacht a sailing

SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.

motor yacht a sailing

Name: Sailing Yacht A

Length: 143 metres

Builder: Nobiskrug

Designer: Phillipe Starke

Interior Designer: Reymond Langton Design

Speed: 21 knots

Engines: MTU

Volume: 12,558 ton

Launched in 2017, SAILING YACHT A is currently the largest sail-assisted motor yacht in private ownership and cost her owner Andrej Melnichenko an estimated price of US $600 million.

Both her interior and exterior were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects. The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

SAILING YACHT A interior

Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects. He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.

The owner, Andrej Melnichenko, made sure that his two largest vessels matched in many aspects and could be utilised together seamlessly which is why he hired the same design team several times. Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumoured that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel. This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.

The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery which stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin. Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht. A third window is located on the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and almost comparable to a submarine.

A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one of a kind dining experience in this unusual location. Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.

The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew members. Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A. No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.

Andrej Melnichenko’s MOTOR YACHT A, for example, has ornate furniture in white and cream tones which are contrasted by dark wooden elements and teak. Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together.

However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorised companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.

Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.

The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side. While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumoured that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint. The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed.

Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests. This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below deck space for crew members.

The owner of SAILING YACHT A is Andrej Melnichenko, a Russian businessman who made his fortune in the coal and fertiliser industries. He also owns MOTOR YACHT A, which is 24 metres shorter than SAILING YACHT A.

Melnichenko is said to have a net worth of US $13 Billion making him one of the richest men in Russia. He owns a private Boeing 737 jet as well as his two superyachts which are his prized possessions.

Melnichenko and his wife Aleksandra, who is a former singer and model, particularly enjoy visiting the Mediterranean with SAILING YACHT A. They are frequently seen off the shore of Croatia and tend to take MOTOR YACHT A along with them as a support vessel.

Melnichenko and his wife have two children, Tara and Adrian, who sometimes accompany their parents on extended trips aboard the family’s luxury yachts.

motor yacht a sailing

SAILING YACHT A cost an estimated US $600 million, which is a relatively affordable price considering her large size and tonnage. A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.

This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price of has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.

Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.

In addition to any cost for crew, supplies and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million. SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter, and her owner Andrej Melnichenko is very particular about who is allowed on board.

Specifications

SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten. Paired with her unusual futuristic design, her length of 143 meters (469 ft), beam of 25 metres (82 ft) and draft of 8 metres (26 ft) make her a more than impressive vessel.

SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction. To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.

She is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on her launch date. She has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines.

SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 metres (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.

Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.

Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 metres (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London. However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.

She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.

She is rumoured to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.

It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.

With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines.

Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state of the art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button.

SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminium to reduce weight and keep the vessel light. She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.

motor yacht a sailing

During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel. Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.

They specialise in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.

She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the centre and several elevators spread across the yacht. She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy of the owners.

Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.

Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests, taking them on excursions. One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fibre speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.

This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.

The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots.

The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skies, tenders and other equipment. However, Andrej Melnichenko is known for enjoying lavish parties and events, so the space was specially designed so it can be converted into a dance floor and entertainment space if needed.

High profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumoured to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown. Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style.

However, despite her cutting edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.

The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.

There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel. Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

Motor Yacht or Sailing Yacht?

Chartering a luxury yacht is the ultimate way to experience a truly personalized vacation. While the destination is of utmost importance, the yacht you choose is equally significant. With so many yacht styles, sizes and amenities, it can be hard to keep things straight. Especially for first-time yachters. To help you understand the differences between luxury motor yacht charters vs. sailing yacht charters, we’ve put together a quick guide.

Yacht Haven Marina

  • Motor Yachts

Super-Yachts & Mega-Yachts

The highly capable motor yacht can take you on Arctic expeditions, luxurious trips along the Italian Riviera , or snorkeling in the Bahamas. No matter the conditions outside, motor yachts deliver comfort, style, and plenty of room to unwind. Motor yachts are a luxury resort at sea, with many featuring gyms, pools, theaters, and more. Some even have helipads for effortlessly accessing even the most remote locations.

Large families or group vacations among friends can be easily accommodated on super-yachts (78ft+/24m) and megayachts (200ft+/60m). Numerous staterooms and flexible sleeping configurations allow for private spaces and many group gathering areas. Smaller yachts from 40ft+/12m are also great options for smaller groups or couples celebrating their honeymoon.

If you’re into water toys, many motor yachts carry numerous tenders from jet skis, to kiteboards, paddleboards, inflatables, and scuba equipment. Additionally, dedicated crew can be requested for instructing and accompanying guests on many water excursions. With the flexibility that comes with a motor yacht, some guests can choose to go fishing, while others can take the tender to shore for some beach time.

Speed is also a great attribute of motor yachts. You can experience more destinations in a shorter time with the power of 40+ knots, and no reliance on the wind. Their sheer size and advanced stabilizers also allow for smooth sailing while underway. Take a look at the luxurious accommodations aboard Superyacht Starship .

Motor Catamarans

Flexible, comfortable, and perfect for cruising shallow waters.  That’s one way to describe the increasingly popular motor catamaran category.  These yachts combine the agility of a smaller boat, with many of the conveniences of a large motor yacht. The dual hulls also allow for a more stable ride while underway. Lack of sails provides a lower clearance for added flexibility in lower passages.

Smaller than most megayachts, catamarans can still typically accommodate groups of up to 12 and offer two or three levels of area for relaxing and dining. Many modern yachts even feature forward cockpit areas for secluded outdoor space in the front of the boat. Couples can easily share these boats without problems. While families can have their space spreading out on the flybridge as well as the main deck.

Motor Catamarans can also cruise at a quick clip, reaching 22-25 knots, depending on the boat and conditions. This allows for easy navigation of groups of islands like the USVI , Bahamas, Greece, and more. You can also get much closer to land in these gorgeous lagoon areas and tiny ports.

Water sports enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to the water that catamarans boast. Drop anchor and swim, snorkel, or go kayaking within minutes. Most catamarans also carry dinghies or tenders to explore or tow inflatables.

Onboard, the galley and salon are prioritized with wide and easily traversed configurations perfect for gourmet dinners. Front deck areas often feature trampolines for relaxing and breezy sunbathing.  What completes the package is the low fuel consumption that comes with the small engines and lighter-weight frames. Catamarans provide the option to enjoy a private yacht charter more economically.

Sailing Yachts

Sailing catamaran.

Like the aforementioned power catamarans, the sailing catamaran yachts offer a very comfortable experience, suited for many top yachting locations around the world. They traverse these gorgeous waters, however, at a slower pace, reaching 9-10 knots per hour, depending on conditions and the boat’s engine. This is an important factor to consider when choosing between a motor yacht vs. sailing yacht.

Those in search of true relaxation will appreciate the quiet sailing of these luxury sailing catamarans, a major difference from luxury motor yachts. In addition, sailing enthusiasts can learn techniques and lend a helping hand to the crew if so desired.

Nearly all of the great designs of a power catamaran also exist aboard sail yachts. Flybridges and front cockpits allow for more distinct lounging and sightseeing vistas. As with power catamarans, the water is easily accessed, giving way to hours of water sports enjoyment.

Gliding through the water with two hulls, these sailing catamarans navigate the seas more flatly than traditional mono-hull sailboats, also adding comfort and stability. Also important, sailing catamarans can travel long distances without the need for refueling. Not to mention the lower fuel costs and the smaller environmental footprint this amounts to. A factor to note when choosing between a motor yacht vs. sailing yacht.

A sailboat yacht charter offers guests a truly unique and exciting experience. Most notably, you have the great opportunity to learn sailing terminology, equipment, and maneuvers. You’ll be able to participate in the journey while gaining expert knowledge from the seasoned crew.

In addition, you’ll love the quiet experience and thrill of being propelled by the wind, just as explorers have been doing for millennia. Activities like fishing, swimming, snorkeling are easily reached from the boat.

Larger toys like jet skis or motorized equipment are however not as readily available. The shape of sailing yachts does limit some storage, typically found on powerboats. However, the captain and crew will do their best to accommodate all guests’ preferences and desires.

Traditional sailboat yachts can reach lengths of 220 ft, enabling large groups to charter in total comfort. The large decks, some with flybridges flow elegantly into interior salons. The staterooms also offer great space and amenities for entertainment and dining.

Utilizing the wind for as much travel as possible, sail yachts can travel further distances without the need for stopping to refuel. In some cases, sailboats are the only way to reach very remote islands and blue water attractions. This of course also means very low fuel consumption in comparison to power yachts.

We hope this helps you in choosing between chartering a luxury motor yacht vs. sailing yacht. Please visit our wide array of luxury yachts for charter and let us plan your dream trip today!

Please call us today at 1 (321) 777-1707 or describe Your Vacation Vision to help you plan your fully-crewed private luxury yachting vacation! Inquire as soon as possible about your custom, crewed yacht charter.

Sailing yacht or sail-assisted motor yacht?

The term ‘sailing yacht’ is in danger of becoming a tool for greenwashing, should it be reserved for vessels that actually sail.

Image for article Sailing yacht or sail-assisted motor yacht?

Put a group of superyacht industry experts in a room together and ask them, what's the biggest sail yacht in the world? This shouldn’t be a controversial question. You’d think a straightforward question would result in a straightforward answer, but I can guarantee that not everyone would have the same response. Sailing Yacht A is widely regarded as the biggest sailing yacht in the world, however, technically speaking, it is a sail-assisted motor yacht. Therefore, you could argue that the newly launched Y721 is now the largest sailing yacht in the world.

The problem is, who gets to distinguish what a sail-assisted motor yacht is and what a pure sailing yacht is? If it is down to how often the sails get used, then you could argue that there are many sailing yachts that spend almost all of their time cruising with the main engines running. You could counter this and say that anything with sails is a sailing yacht. However, I would argue that there is value in differentiating between yachts that can sail and yachts that do sail.

From a PR perspective, a sailing yacht is more appealing than a big motor yacht, largely because people assume if it has rigging, then it must be more sustainable. Earlier this year I was interviewed by Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio 2 and I was questioned why superyachts should be allowed to exist given the current climate crisis. I pointed out that while the industry does need to do better, not every yacht is a giant diesel-guzzling machine. The industry is working towards hybrid propulsion and hopefully, the sailing yacht market could be reinvigorated. The presenter scoffed, “Yeah but that's a sailboat, it’s not really a superyacht now is it?” This is the kind of naivety that some current sailing yacht owners and potential clients will be banking on.

Just because a yacht has sails, that doesn’t mean it is sustainable, in fact, it accounts for very little. You can have a very large sail yacht that has a huge hotel load, an operational profile that doesn’t consider the environment, and two massive engines that consume loads of fuel, and yet, you are off the hook because at least it's a sailboat.

On the other hand, you have something like the 106 metre Black Pearl . Black Pearl features a DynaRig, a hybrid propulsion system, and is able to regenerate energy by dragging the controlled-pitch propellers through the water while sailing. The yacht spends a lot of time under sail - the captain estimates that they use the sails 80 per cent of the time when underway. Recently, the yacht sailed 100 per cent of the way from Gibraltar to Amsterdam and they were even able to regenerate energy when the conditions allowed.

And guess what, the captain of the vessel, Chris Gartner, doesn’t even call it a sailing yacht. In a recent article with SuperyachtNews, he stated that he prefers the term ‘auxiliary-powered sailing ship’ because of the stigma attached to sailing yachts in the superyacht industry. You can’t blame him either, Black Pearl is a special ship, and unfortunately, most people don’t make the effort of giving it the recognition it deserves.

So, instead of tarnishing every sailing yacht with the same green brush, the industry should take the time to reconsider how we label a yacht based on its credentials and unique features. The superyacht industry has outgrown outdated definitions - Def. ‘Sailing yacht’ - a leisure craft that uses sails as its primary means of propulsion. That is a completely different thing to a boat that has sails but doesn’t use them. You don’t call an aeroplane a car just because it has wheels.

Discover the intricate world of motor yacht ownership. Understand costs, benefits, potential income opportunities, and lifestyle impact of buying a boat.

If you've landed on this page, it's likely that the idea of owning a powerboat has been playing on your mind. Perhaps the allure of sunsets at sea, thrilling rides on blue waters, or the promise of freedom and adventure have stirred up the question: Is buying a boat a good idea? We recognize that this is a significant decision, and it's crucial to thoroughly consider all aspects before plunging into such a commitment.

In this guide, we aim to navigate you through the intricacies of motor yacht ownership. We'll delve into the pros and cons of buying a boat, aiming to illuminate the grey areas and hopefully answer the myriad of questions that are likely swimming in your head. Things like, "Can I afford it?" "Is buying a boat a good investment?" "How will it change my lifestyle?" and ultimately, "Is buying a boat worth it?"

But first, let's start off with the very basics.

motor yacht a sailing

The pros and cons of buying a boat

Similar to any significant investment, there are numerous pros and cons of buying a boat that deserve careful consideration. These must be judiciously balanced against your individual needs, lifestyle, and financial capacity.

Why buying a motor yacht can be a good idea?

Here are eight compelling reasons that illuminate the benefits of owning a motor yacht:

The upgrade: How yacht ownership enhances lifestyle

Owning a yacht can significantly upgrade your lifestyle. Imagine leisurely cruising the open waters, throwing lavish parties, or taking spontaneous weekend trips to secluded islands. This can provide an unprecedented level of luxury, freedom, and flexibility that few other possessions can match.

Embracing speed and power with motor yachts

Motor yachts are renowned for their speed and power, enabling quick voyages and swift exploration. If your idea of boating includes covering vast distances in less time, a motorboat might be your ideal marine partner.

The simplicity in navigating motorboats

Motor yachts offe r more straightforward operations than their sailing counterparts. Thanks to their mechanical propulsion systems, you can skip the learning curve associated with understanding wind patterns and mastering sailing techniques.

Experiencing luxury comfort aboard motor yachts

Motor yachts are synonymous with comfort and luxury. With spacious interiors, modern amenities, and elegant living quarters, they deliver a top-tier experience that could make the sea feel like your second home.

Social and family connections aboard yachts

A yacht can be a perfect platform for creating unforgettable memories with family and friends. The shared experiences of sailing, exploring new locations, or simply enjoying each other's company in a unique setting can foster deeper connections.

Turning yachting luxury into profit

Buying a boat can be a good investment. When you're not using your motor yacht, it doesn't have to sit idle. Many owners charter their boats, transforming their luxury assets into income-generating ones.

Powerboat cruise itinerary flexibility

Motor yachts offer the freedom and flexibility to chart your course, regardless of the wind. This means you have greater control over your itinerary and can easily adjust your plans based on changing desires or weather conditions.

The freedom of adventure and exploration with motor yachts

Owning a motor yacht means having a gateway to unlimited adventure. You have the liberty to explore secluded coves, visit remote islands, or embark on extended cruising expeditions whenever the sea calls.

Motor yachts: Your personal retreat for privacy and exclusivity

If your preference leans towards private, exclusive vacations away from crowded tourist spots, then a motor yacht can serve as your personal oasis. Enjoy peace and tranquility on the open sea, with horizons all to yourself.

When buying a boat might be a bad idea

While owning a motor yacht can bring numerous benefits, there are also potential downsides to be aware of. Here are a few reasons why buying a motor yacht might not be the best choice for everyone:

If you’re not ready to make a significant initial investment

If you're not quite prepared for a considerable financial outlay, the initial cost of yacht ownership could be a deterrent. Luxury motorboats can be expensive; the bigger and more sophisticated the boat, the higher the price tag. On the bright side, several options exist to finance a motorboat !

If you're not willing to maintain a sufficient expense level

Owning a yacht involves more than just the initial purchase price. Maintenance, motorboat insurance , docking fees , fuel, and potential crew salaries can add up, leading to substantial annual expenses that must be factored into your budget. However, it's worth noting that with thoughtful planning and management, there are several strategies to help keep these costs more manageable.

Sailing vs. Motor Yachts: Which One is Right for Your Vacation?

Sailing vs. Motor Yachts: Which One is Right for Your Vacation?

Introduction: exploring the choice between sailing and motor yachts for your vacation.

When planning a vacation on the water, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to choose a sailing or motor yacht. Both options offer unique experiences, and understanding the differences can help you make the right choice for your vacation. Sailing yachts provide a sense of adventure and a connection to the elements, as you harness the wind to propel you forward. On the other hand, motor yachts offer speed, convenience, and the ability to reach your destination quickly. By exploring the pros and cons of each option, you can ensure that your vacation is tailored to your preferences and desires.

Sailing yachts: Advantages and characteristics

Sailing yachts offer a unique and authentic experience for those seeking a memorable vacation on the water. Unlike motor yachts, sailing yachts harness the power of the wind, allowing you to truly connect with the elements and enjoy a serene and peaceful journey. The gentle sway of the boat and the sound of the sails fluttering in the wind create a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Additionally, sailing yachts are known for their eco-friendliness, as they rely on renewable energy sources and have a smaller carbon footprint. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a beginner, a sailing yacht can provide you with an unforgettable adventure and a chance to explore some of the most beautiful destinations in the world in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Motor yachts: Advantages and characteristics

Motor yachts offer a unique set of advantages and characteristics that make them a popular choice for vacationers. Unlike sailing yachts, motor yachts are powered by engines, providing a faster and more efficient mode of transportation. This means you can cover greater distances in a shorter amount of time, allowing you to explore more destinations during your vacation. Additionally, motor yachts offer luxurious amenities and spacious interiors, making them perfect for those who crave comfort and convenience while on the water. Whether you’re looking to embark on an adventurous journey or simply relax and unwind, a motor yacht can provide the perfect setting for your dream vacation.

Considerations for sailing yachts: Experience level and desired level of involvement

When deciding between a sailing yacht and a motor yacht for your vacation, it is important to consider your experience level and desired level of involvement. Sailing yachts provide a unique and immersive experience, allowing you to harness the power of the wind and navigate the waters using your sailing skills. This option is perfect for those with a background in sailing or those who are eager to learn and be actively involved in the sailing process. On the other hand, motor yachts offer a more relaxed and effortless experience, with the ability to cover longer distances in a shorter amount of time. If you prefer a vacation where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery, a motor yacht may be the right choice for you. Ultimately, the decision between a sailing yacht and a motor yacht depends on your personal preferences and the type of vacation experience you are seeking.

Considerations for motor yachts: Speed, convenience, and comfort

When choosing a yacht for your vacation, it’s important to consider the specific benefits of a motor yacht. Motor yachts offer the advantage of speed, allowing you to cover larger distances in a shorter amount of time and explore multiple destinations in a single trip. Additionally, motor yachts provide unparalleled convenience, as they are equipped with powerful engines that eliminate the need for sails and can easily navigate through various weather conditions. Moreover, motor yachts prioritize comfort, offering spacious interiors, luxurious amenities, and smooth cruising experiences. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling adventure or a relaxing getaway, a motor yacht is the perfect choice to ensure a memorable and enjoyable vacation.

Destinations: Which type of yacht is better suited for different locations?

When it comes to choosing the right type of yacht for your vacation, considering the destination is key. Sailing yachts are ideal for exploring picturesque coastal areas, where the wind can carry you to hidden coves and remote islands. Their ability to navigate shallow waters makes them perfect for destinations like the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. On the other hand, motor yachts are better suited for longer distances and open waters, allowing you to cover more ground and reach destinations like the Bahamas or the Greek Islands in a shorter amount of time. Ultimately, your choice will depend on the specific location you plan to visit, ensuring that you can fully enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of each destination.

Cost comparison: Factors to consider when budgeting for a sailing or motor yacht vacation

When budgeting for a sailing or motor yacht vacation , there are several factors to consider that can impact the overall cost. While sailing yachts may initially seem more affordable due to lower fuel costs, it’s important to take into account other expenses such as maintenance, mooring fees, and crew salaries. On the other hand, motor yachts may have higher fuel costs, but they often offer more luxurious amenities and faster travel times. Additionally, the size of the yacht and the number of guests can also affect the price, with larger yachts generally being more expensive. By carefully considering these factors, you can determine whether a sailing or motor yacht vacation is the right choice for your budget and preferences.

Crew or no crew: Deciding whether to hire a crew or captain your own yacht

Deciding whether to hire a crew or captain your own yacht is a crucial factor in determining the type of experience you want during your vacation. While both options have their advantages, choosing the right one depends on your preferences, sailing skills, and desired level of relaxation. Hiring a crew allows you to sit back and enjoy your vacation without worrying about navigation, maintenance, or cooking. It also provides an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and explore new destinations with ease. On the other hand, captaining your own yacht offers a sense of independence and adventure. You have the freedom to explore at your own pace and make spontaneous decisions. However, it requires a certain level of sailing expertise and the ability to handle various responsibilities. Ultimately, weighing the pros and cons of each option will help you make an informed decision and ensure a memorable yacht vacation tailored to your needs.

Personal preferences: Factors to consider based on your individual preferences and priorities

When deciding between sailing and motor yachts for your vacation, it’s important to consider your personal preferences and priorities. Sailing yachts offer a unique experience, allowing you to harness the power of the wind and embrace a slower pace of travel. This can be perfect for those looking for a more immersive and tranquil experience on the water. On the other hand, motor yachts offer speed and convenience, allowing you to easily explore multiple destinations in a shorter amount of time. If you value flexibility and the ability to cover more ground, a motor yacht may be the better choice for you. Ultimately, the decision comes down to what you prioritize in a vacation and the type of experience you want to have on the water.

Conclusion: Making the right choice for your dream yacht vacation

After weighing the pros and cons of sailing and motor yachts , it is crucial to make the right choice for your dream yacht vacation. Sailing yachts offer a sense of adventure and the opportunity to harness the power of the wind, providing a unique and eco-friendly experience. On the other hand, motor yachts offer speed, comfort, and the convenience of reaching your destination quickly. Factors such as your sailing experience, desired itinerary, and personal preferences should be considered when making this decision. Whether you prefer the thrill of sailing or the luxury of a motor yacht, choosing the right vessel will ensure that your yacht vacation is nothing short of extraordinary.

A Motorboat as Cozy as a Woodland Cabin

By Tim McKeough

Victoria Sass, an interior designer in Minneapolis, had long dreamed of owning an R.V. so she and her family could hit the open road with their living quarters attached.

“I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, with a Volkswagen van,” said Ms. Sass, 40, who had fond memories of traveling with her family in their mobile vacation home. She wanted her husband, Torben Rytt, and their three children, Duncan, 3, Irene, 8, and Walter, 13, to enjoy the same experience.

Mr. Rytt, who grew up outside Copenhagen, had other ideas: He wanted a sailboat.

“I’m from a boating family,” said Mr. Rytt, 45, a consultant for Nordic technology companies. “My parents met at a boat show, and we’ve owned boats since I was an infant. Every summer, we’d go sailing for five or six weeks.”

Mr. Rytt had no interest in an R.V.; Ms. Sass had no interest in a sailboat.

The blue-and-white motorboat on a river, with a forested hillside beginning to turn autumn colors behind it.

So Mr. Rytt offered a compromise: What if they bought a motorboat with a large cabin that held a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping quarters?

Think of it as an R.V. that just happens to float down rivers, he suggested, instead of rolling along roads.

Ms. Sass, who runs the design firm Prospect Refuge Studio , liked the idea, as long as she could customize the interior to make it as cozy as a woodland cabin.

It didn’t take long for Mr. Rytt to find their project boat: a 44-foot-long vessel from 1983 in nearby Red Wing, Minn., with a tiny kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and bunk room that needed some maintenance and love.

They bought it for $100,000 at the end of 2020 and moved it to their planned docking spot on the St. Croix River. The following spring, Mr. Rytt began taking lessons to learn how to pilot the boat, and they began their work to transform it.

They had the exterior of the boat repainted, changing it from maroon to sky-blue and white. They replaced the worn black awnings with new blue ones. Below deck, they tore out the grungy carpet, and Mr. Rytt spent an entire summer installing a new teak parquet floor. (There was existing teak wall paneling and cabinetry that they liked, so they cleaned and oiled the wood to refresh it.)

The more they worked, the more they realized that in such a compact space there was a reason for everything.

“Every picture and mirror on the wall was actually an access panel to something mechanical,” Ms. Sass said. “So if you replace something, it has to be replaced with something of the exact same size, which can be frustrating. It’s like every piece of trim is interconnected. Even the wallpaper is integral to the boat.”

Nevertheless, she was adamant about replacing the art on the walls. She was more flexible in the bathroom, where she kept the existing wallcovering, but recruited Kelsi Sharp, a graphic designer and sign painter, to give it tidy maroon-and-blue stripes.

For the kitchen, she worked with Kristen Falkirk to produce handmade black and mint-green ceramic tiles to resurface the counter and backsplash, giving the space a little wabi-sabi appeal.

For lighting, Ms. Sass mixed Danish nautical lights with a few designer favorites, including Rotonde X ceiling lamps with fabric shades from Roman and Williams Guild, which she mounted in the living room.

To furnish the boat, she mixed upscale pieces with budget finds, blasting everything with color and pattern. In the living room, she covered an Ikea sectional sleeper sofa with blankets from OddBird, piling on patterned pillows from Caravane, Goodee and St. Frank. For the floor, she bought a cushy wool rug from Beni Rugs.

“It’s super shaggy, which is totally impractical for a boat,” she said. “But I just think it’s fun.”

Because they were limited to working on the boat only in warmer months, it took three years to complete the overhaul, at a cost of about $250,000. They rechristened their vessel Freya, a play on the name of the Norse goddess Freyja that they hope is easier for non-Scandinavians to pronounce.

Now they use the boat not only on weekends, but also for multiweek voyages on the Mississippi River, traveling between river towns. It’s not quite the same as seeing sights from an R.V., but the whole family has fallen in love with life on the water. “Some days we just anchor out in the river, to get away from it all,” Ms. Sass said.

She no longer yearns for an R.V., and Mr. Rytt has abandoned all thoughts of a sailboat.

“The funny thing is that I actually prefer this over a sailboat,” he said. “It’s one of those things I don’t think I can ever get enough of. I could spend an infinite amount of time on this boat.”
