Virgin Islands Entry Regulations

From covid to work permits and business licences.

With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.

What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.

BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.

The main charter season in the BVI spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year. • Can I fly into the BVI for my charter? While flights in and out of St. Thomas remain the most popular pick, typically due to preferred routes, flight times, and pricing, our other suggested option is to take a commercial flight in and out of San Juan, Puerto Rico with a connecting flight to the BVI and back. We will assist with connecting flight recommendations or with private charter flight reservations either from Puerto Rico to the BVI and back or from St. Thomas to the BVI and back.
• What’s the best way to get to the BVI and back from St. Thomas? Many of our clients take private water taxis from St. Thomas to the BVI and back for their charters. While more expensive than a commercial ferry, this option offers a faster and far more seamless, luxury experience. Once your flights are confirmed, we’ll be happy to assist with water taxi reservations.
• If I fly into St. Thomas, can my charter start and end there? While the crewed fleet was able to offer St. Thomas ports and a BVI itinerary through July 2023, crewed charters that occur in the BVI after October 2023 will require a BVI pick-up and drop-off.

My family and I sailed with a group of 7 other friends for a week on the catamaran, Sol Liv, captained by James along with Robyn who was also the chef. We had an amazing vacation. James and Robyn are great people. They know the BVIs well and took us to so many beautiful spots. Plus, Robyn is a very talented chef. Our vacation was truly relaxing with James and Robyn in charge of all the details. The boat is amazing as well. Truly a floating hotel. We will be talking about this vacation for the rest of our lives.

They couldn't have been more accommodating to our group. The food was absolutely fabulous and exceeded our expectations. They were kind, gracious hosts who anticipated our every need. They served with a smile and are a terrific team. They felt like family by the end of the week. We will come back only if we can sail with Tony & Claudia again!

Spectacular once-in-a-lifetime vacation with Voyage Charters and Captain Chris & Chef Jena. Voyage emerged as the clear leader after looking at several charter companies in the area, and were well worth the slight extra expense. Our 59' cat, Miles Away, was immaculate and comfortable, with far more than enough space for our three families. We had considered going without the captain and chef, and were so glad we didn't -- Chris showed us so much more of the islands than we would've been able to attempt ourselves, and made the entire thing effortless and 100% stress-free. His local knowledge (he grew up there) was a bonus. And Jena's meals were impeccable. She not only easily adapted to some special requests we had, but made a birthday breakfast for my daughter. Everything she cooked was tasty and creative, and she was both professional and fun to be around. We all miss them both & wish them the best!

Regarding our trip on 'Sol Liv' in May, 2022, we had a wonderful time with Capt. Tony Cook and his lovely wife Claudia. They took care of our every need and blended in immediately with our group of twelve. All of us were thrilled with the exceptional level of care. Captain Tony coached, bartended, entertained and dozens of other tasks with an eye on customer service. He clearly loves his wife. Claudia had delicious and creative meals and abundant midday treats for us. She made special dishes for dietary concerns. She is the quiet center in the swirl of activity around the boat. They are wonderful people and we were fortunate to spend time with them. Certainly one of our best trips to the islands!

If you are booking a trip be sure to request Captain Blade and First Mate, Chef and DJ Jena! Given the circumstances there was no doubt that we were going to have a good time. However, with these two as our crew our experience was greatly enhanced. I appreciate their knowledge, professionalism and most off all their wit and candor. Thank you Blade for taking us to such beautiful locations and thank you Jena for taking 11 people on a delightful epicurean adventure 3 times a day!

We just returned from an 11-guest 6-night BVI trip on the 65’ powercat “Out of Office” (Voyage Charters out of Soper's Hole in Tortola). Our captain was Blade Goodall and our chef was Nia Mora. We have done these trips before and Captain Blade and Chef Nia were by far the best we have ever had. Captain Blade was engaging, knowledgeable, funny, and flexible. We made a number of adjustments to our trip on the fly and he was very accommodating. All of the pre-planned excursion details (Mokes and dinner reservations on Anegada, scuba diving at Virgin Gorda, etc.) were perfect. The unscheduled impromptu activities (e-foils at Virgin Gorda, snorkeling, tubing, water skiing, fishing, bar hopping, etc.) were amazing and Captain Blade always took the time to ensure everyone was having fun. Chef Nia was creative, engaging, and highly talented. Every meal was fantastic and our group of 11 never went hungry! One of the highlights was Chef Nia preparing the 50-pound King Mackerel that Captain Blade helped us catch on the crossing from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke. With zero notice, Chef Nia cancelled her previously planned dinner and prepared an incredible fresh fish dinner complete with homemade teriyaki sauce, watermelon salsa, and perfect rice. This was a lot more work for her but she did it with a smile! Both Captain Blade and Chef Nia worked hard from sunrise to well after sunset each day ensuring that the trip was perfect for all 11 of our guests. We all had tears in our eyes when we said goodbye to them but will definitely request them on a future trip!

They were extremely nice and helped us decide on what plans to make each day. Tate was extremely knowledgeable of the boat and the islands. He grew up in Jost Van Dyke and was able to give us good advice on what to do. My husband liked that Tate was always calm. Justine was a fantastic chef. She made sure our food met the information we provided ahead of time. Every meal was well thought out and delicious. Thank you both for a wonderful experience. The Voyage 520 boat was very nice. I would suggest maybe a couple more bean bags up front for people to lay when the boat is at sail.

Why would you choose a Catamaran for your vacation?

Catamarans are popular for their stability, wide decks, and ease of access. If you want to explore the Caribbean with maximum comfort, chartering a catamaran is the perfect choice.

Cat cruising according to some is the crème de la crème of charter boats. The greatest advantage of a catamaran as a vacation sailing craft is the amount of space they offer. Enjoy bigger cabins and lots of space on deck to move around.

Catamarans are also easier for guests with mobility issues. There are fewer steps to speak of, and with two hulls, they’re extremely stable. Families with kids, the elderly, or anyone prone to seasickness would benefit from a catamaran’s large, stable base.

Don’t be fooled by their size, though. Cats are not the cumbersome tortoises of the ocean — they are fast! Though they don’t point upwind as well as a monohull, they more than make up for that in speed on other tacks.

Flexibility

Snorkel fans take note. Catamarans can get in close to beaches. Thanks to their shallow draft, they allow more privacy, and can get you closer to snorkel areas. Get those masks ready! And with their size and stability, cats are the ultimate party boats.

Crewed Catamaran Charters

Over the last 10 years or so, both sailing and power catamarans have pretty much displaced single-hull vessels in the BVI and Caribbean charter industry. This has happened for well-founded reasons:

Space and Comfort

Generally speaking, catamarans are more spacious and can accommodate more guests in comfort than traditional sailboats. In most designs, the two pontoons house the cabins and bathrooms (heads). The salon, dining and kitchen areas are located in the slightly raised mid-section between the pontoons. There are many variations on this theme, such as extra cabins in the mid-section, galley up or galley down and other interesting design twists depending on the manufacturer and designer. There is always an outside rear deck area that can be used for dining as well as just hanging out. The netted forward bow area is ideal for sunbathing and on the larger cats, there is usually a nice upper deck where the captain runs the boat from and can also be used by guests for sunbathing.

Catamarans tend to be very stable, with very little “heeling over” – this is due to the twin hull design. Traditional single-hull sailboats tend to heel while “under-way” when the wind is blowing from any direction except from behind you. This “heeling” in which the vessel is literally moving along bent over sideways, makes many guests uncomfortable and can cause sea-sickness if you’re not used to it. Additionally, moving around the boat while traveling at an angle and with the deck slanting one way or the other, can be a challenge. Catamarans on the other hand, remain upright and do not heel even in strong breezes. However, all vessels are susceptible to the fore and aft “pitching” motion. No escaping Mother Nature and her wave patterns..!! However, the BVI waters are very protected and do not usually have uncomfortably high waves

The design of catamarans provides the owners and operators of charter vessels to cater for larger groups with the same number of crew members. Whereas the average number of guests used to be 6, now with the advent of catamarans the average number has grown to 8. From a client perspective, with larger groups and with everyone contributing (Yes, I know this is not always the case) the cost per person goes down.

Ease of Operation and Maneuverability

For the captain and crew, sailing a catamaran is easy and gives you or your captain a lots of time to put sails up and down, and is very tolerant when the sails are not set exactly right and very easy to approach a mooring or dockage. The downside is that catamarans do not usually “point” well into the wind. Well, you can always turn the engines on..!!

Overall, catamarans have taken over the industry. Not really a bad thing. Some traditionalists miss the single hull vessels. Personally I do not. Give me a nice cat any day.

Yacht description.

Launched in 2023, SÓL presents silent luxury – this ECO Sunreef collects the sun to drive its electric motors for clean power yachting. Carefully selected materials, systems and practices place people and planet first. SOL’s expansive 80′ x 39′ design offers vast bow, cockpit, saloon and flybridge areas equal to yachts twice SOL’s length.

Accommodating up to eight guests in four spacious ensuite staterooms, SÓL is a great living space for family groups or couples. The king-sized master cabin sits amidships with a large bathroom with plenty of space, plus a queen-sized cabin forward and two further VIP queen-size staterooms. Each guest cabin has been designed for maximum space, with ample storage options and device charging stations. No expense has been spared in fitting out this yacht with top of the range bedding and luxurious touches throughout.

On decks there is a massive third floor flybridge with seating, bar and dining option. Forward there is a further seating and sunning area and at the back, to complete the trio, there is a sheltered cockpit for lazing or dining.

Our personal opinion

Why book SOL – IT’S GREEN –   SOL’s electric propulsion system runs silently and odor-free whenever possible. The large solar panels (21 kW) fuel battery banks, propulsion and house power needs. Generators are only run briefly, if necessary.  SOL’s waste management features on-board composting and disposal of single-use water bottles is eliminated with its on-board water-making and re-usable bottles.  All decor, furniture, and finishes are vegan (no animal products). Food is sourced from local growers as much as possible supporting small farmers. Oh, and also it’s completely luxurious! With four crew to take care of your every need, your charter aboard SOL will be an incredible experience.

Another huge surprise was the amazing food and drinks served throughout the trip. We didn’t anticipate that Mallory’s talents would consistently elicit comments from us that this is one of the best meals that we have ever enjoyed. Blake kept us well hydrated, served and cared for our needs, and collaborated with them to create memories for us that we never would have thought of. Richard is a hidden gem and contributes to the experience in so many ways. Jack orchestrated the many stops and places we visited, as well as assembled a great team and created an evolved culture that has everyone knowing what they stand for, where they are going and how to get there. It is apparent that all of them participate in decision-making and own the outcome of their efforts. Every one of the team members contributed at mealtimes, getting drinks into our hands and special experiences on land and in the ocean, to create special memories for life for us.

We are fortunate to travel frequently and stay in many properties that are rated as some of the best in the world. Yet, this 7-day trip was the best 7 days of vacation that we have ever experienced. From beginning to end, this experience was exceptional.

Thank you for giving your team the latitude to create a special memory for us. It was magical. We are already assembling a group of friends to share with us another experience with your wonderful team on your amazing yacht, Sol.

Rendezvous diving

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.
