Astus Boats Are Now Available in the USA!

It comes with great pleasure that Red Beard Sailing is now the official US dealer for the brand new line of Astus Boats !

Design & History

Astus Boats logo

In 2004 Jean Hubert-Pommois created Astus Boats. When they got started Astus was only making 7 of their first design the 20.1 in their first year. Now, 17 years later, there are over 400 Astus boats sailing all over the world!

Starting in 2015 Astus sought out a refresh in the model range. As a result, Astus hired world renowned naval architect firm, VPLP, to completely rethink and redesign the Astus range from the keel up!

VPLP Logo

VPLP is a premier naval architecture and yacht design firm based in France. The firm is well known for their pioneering sailboat designs that have broken numerous speed records. Successful racing sailboats from VPLP include Hugo Boss, Groupama 3, and America's Cup winner Oracle. Continuous innovations in hull forms and foil shapes have kept VPLP Design at the top of the leaderboard in the most challenging regattas in the world.

Performance

Astus 20.5 Features

The new age of Astus Boats has ushered in a new definition of speed for these small portable trimarans. These boats offer exceptional handling and performance in a small and manageable package. These boats offer a few key design points that really make these  small trimarans exceptional:

Narrow Hulls: Skinny hulls slice through the water and waves with ease and provide better light wind performance as well as more comfort in poor and choppy conditions. Typically, narrower hulls means you have less buoyancy, but when used in conjunction with the inverted bows, these boats actually boast more buoyancy than your average production trimaran.

Inverted Bows: Hull speed is a mathematical calculation (speed in kn = 1.35 x square root of waterline length). Inverted bows maximize waterline length by making sure the longest part of the boat is the below waterline (BWL) length. This means the Astus boats will be faster in light winds and will get on plane in lower wind speeds than other boats with traditional overhanging bows. In conjunction with the narrow hulls, the Astus trimarans are very comfortable in a chop because they do not hobby horse as much as more common tri's.

Infusion Construction: The infusion method for constructing the Astus trimarans ensure that the hulls are as lightweight as possible. Less weight means that these boats are faster and can carry more weight, safely, than other similar sized trimarans.

Astus 20.5 on a trailer

Astus is famous for their telescopic carbon beams that allow their boats to be road trailerable. This style of beam offers a number of benefits over competitive folding and swinging style folding systems.

Less Weight: It doesn't take a big imagination to see this obvious advantage. Other folding / portable trimarans have overbuilt fiberglass beams in order to equal the rigidity of a simple carbon tube.

Fewer Moving Parts:   The Astus Telescopic Beams are a simple locking pin and slide, no special tools, parts or hardware are required to maintain or operate.  Complicated folding systems have many bushings and specific geometry that must be maintained. In addition to all of those extra parts comes lots of hardware that must be checked regularly.

Easier Transport/Storage: Because the telescopic beams slide in a linear way, the bottom of all three hulls remain the bottoms. Unlike the Farrier designed boats, the Astus boats can easily be moored or docked in a monohull slip. This often means finding a slip is easy (shallow water monohull slips are hard to rent for marinas)! In addition to being easier to store in the water, getting a boat back on a trailer touches the bottom of the boat instead of beautiful painted sides gives you a little more wiggle room and less anxiety when launching and retrieving your boat. The beams also allow the boat to require much less height on a trailer which may make all the difference between indoor and outdoor trailer storage in the winter.

Less Intrusive: The Astus beams do not require beam boxes or mounting hardware that intrude on the interior cabin. This is a massive perk on trimarans under 30 feet where space comes at a premium. If you plan to do some weekend cruising with the family, you will very much appreciate the extra storage and sleeping space!

Manufacturing Process

Astus Factory Image

Astus Boats is located in the Morbihan region in northwestern France , just near The Trinité-sur-Mer and the Gulf of Morbihan. It is no wonder they make such amazing sailboats!

Astus boats does everything they can to keep manufacturing and sourcing local, in France. They design and build the molds locally and even source sailmaking and other boat's components from other French manufacturers. In case you aren't aware, France is the sailing-est place on the planet. Keeping the whole boat French means that every Astus is imbued with the spirit and love that the French have for the sport of sailing!

Affordability

Astus has long prided itself in offering quality, performance sailboats at a price that will allow would-be adventure seekers all over the world, from all walks of life, to enjoy the passion and performance that you get with an Astus trimaran.

Without further ado, below are specs and base prices for each Astus model:

An ultra-portable personal Tacking Proa or Trimaran . You can choose to sail with two hulls or three with this exciting and affordable trimaran! Easy to car-top, this boat can go from car to water in just 5-10 minutes!

Astus 16.5

A high octane beach trimaran that is easily portable but offers plenty of space and capacity to take the family out for a relaxing (or sometimes sporty ) daysail! This is a great boat for the family to enjoy and for Dad (or Mom) to race in local regattas.

Astus 20.5

The ultimate nomadic weekender. The 20.5 is a bit bigger still than the 16.5 and has a cabin! The addition of the cabin in the 6.0m category means that you get way more boat for your buck than other production trimarans on the market. You also benefit from the other features listed above that makes this the perfect family starter boat as well as being a great day / weekend charter boat!

Astus 22.5

The largest boat in the current Astus lineup . This boat features a much larger cabin than the 20.5 and a bit more speed. Down the line, this boat will be offered with optional foils in the floats to allow for higher speeds in rougher conditions. This wouldn't make this boat a completely foiling boat, just foil assist in the leeward hull. Red Beard Sailing currently has one of these boats in production for our demo fleet. It is slated to arrive in Baltimore in May 2023, so keep an eye out for our un-crating and first sail videos!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Astus 20.1 Explained

The Astus 20.1 , built by Astusboats , is a 20 ft (6.1m) trimaran dinghy aimed at family day sailing, though its cabin offers basic cruising capability. Its multihull design offers speed and stability.

Construction

The Astus 20.1 is built in glass reinforced polyester (GRP) covered with white gelcoat. The cockpit floor has a honeycomb core, offering rigidity and durability. The floats are mounted on telescopic tubes and can be extended or folded on shore or on the water, making it possible to use narrow split ways or monohull marina berths.

Cockpit: The cockpit of the Astus 20.1 is large enough to accommodate 7 adults. The cockpit floor is flat and free from centreboard well or any other gear. The cockpit coamings offer good protection for children.

Spars: The Astus 20.1 mast has one pair of spreaders. The main sail attaches to a boom.

Sails: The Astus 20.1 is equipped with a dacron furling jib and dacron mainsail as standard. The mainsail is fully battened and has one reef as standard, and a second reef can be specified as a factory option. A Pentex jib and mainsail can be specified for enhanced performance.A furling gennaker and an asymmetrical spinnaker are available as options.

Trailer: The trailer offered as an option with the Astus 20.1 has a split beam and tilting rollers and is fitted with a winch to facilitate launching and recovering.Trailer Sailers are boats small and light enough to be towed by ordinary cars. Their width (beam) is constrained by road regulations. In Europe, to be towable on the road the width of the boat and trailer must not exceed 2.55m. The maximum weight is determined by the towing capacity of the towing vehicle and by the type of driving license.Folding trimarans are particularly well suited as trailer sailers because their narrow width with folded floats makes them towable on the road whilst their wide beam with floats extended makes them stable and safe on the water. Furthermore, the absence of ballast makes them considerably lighter than a keelboat of similar size (375 kg for the Astus 20.1 compared to 1000 kg for a 20 ft keelboat). Heavier boats require a stronger and heavier road trailer, making the towing weight even greater.

Suitability for trekking

  • Small cabin with good headroom
  • Ample storage capacity in cabin and cockpit
  • Possibility for portable chemical toilet
  • Vast cockpit with coamings offers good protection
  • Narrow double berth

Astus 20.2

Following to the launching of Astus 20.1 in 2005 and of its 75 models production, its successor has now arrived. Astus 20.2 was born from the desire of bringing improvement and of meeting your requirements.

The sailing programme is the same as the 20.1 one: the 20.2 is a transportable trimaran easy to move from one place to an other one, can be used by one person or by a small team for a one or several days raids and is also a family multicoque for a one day outings (Day Boats).

This new model has more modern shapes and more sport lines, and use again the concepts of Astus 20.1 which have been thoroughly tried and tested and to which some improvements were brought:

A trimaran with many advantages - Speed: an outstanding weight/sail ratio: 24 m² upwind for 350 kg Few water entries with the water deflectors stepped hull. - Stability: each float makes 650 litres that’s to say 150 litres more than the 20.1, Width was also increased to reach 4.25 m. - Safety: the central hull and the floats show a high floatability potential - Weak draught: daggerboard and pivoting rudder, ideal for coast navigation and coming alongside the beach - Quick to fold and without any dismantlement ashore or when sailing (to put in a catway)

A simple and pragmatic use: easy to transport and to handle - A 350 kg weight - Telescopic floats which thanks to the cotter pins allow to pass from a 4.25 m width to a 2.40 m width and vice versa without being obliged to dismantle the floats - A mast easy to step up, 15 kg light, with a 7.50 m height - On the 20.2, a lateral mast position will allow an easy stepping of the mast - A single person is able to rig it and to launch it to water in less than 20 mn. - The advantage is obvious: possibility of changing place and of sailing alone...

A comfortable boat - The vast 2.5 m cockpit is protected by backs with lockers for the storage - The position of the front beams allows to easy enter the cabin. - Bigger trampolines of 2.75 m length, belong to the navigation space, which represents a total surface including the cockpit of 11.5 m² - The cabin with the bunk of 115 cm width and 220 cm length and more ergonomic allows the storage of all the materials and can be a safe shelter for the children. - A front locker used as chain locker and where it is possible to store the fenders.

A rational construction - The boatyard has chosen a polyester construction which allows a better cost production, and which is resistant and easy to maintain.

2 versions: - A family version to quietly sail at a very competitive price - A sport version to meet the requirement of the Astus 20.2 S regatta team. Published: 2010 Photo: Astus

For those who have been hesitating between a racing dinghy and a catamaran, the Astus 14.1 trimaran comes as an exciting alternative. The Astus 14.1 combines the ease of handling and steering of a monohull with the speed of a catamaran. The flared hull and large cockpit provide a dry and comfortable sitting position whilst the floats provide reassuring stability.

Each sponson, with 80 litres of buoyancy, provides the same righting moment as an adult on a trapeze. This allows the boat to carry more sail on a narrow planing hull and achieve planing speeds more quickly. Beginners will enjoy a boat capable of picking up speed in light wind whilst being stable and easy to control. Experienced sailors will enjoy planing sensations similar to a skiff but with a much shorter learning curve, thanks the Astus 14.1's ease of use and furling gennaker.

The first trials of the new Astus 14.1 trimaran took place on June 30th in Brittany and we were delighted to find that the boat fully lives up to expectations. The boat is fast and nimble and can easily take two adults on board or be sailed single handed.

The Astus 16.1

The Astus 16.1 trimaran was born from the desire to create a family-friendly dayboat offering maximum pleasure with minimum hassle. Its simplicity makes it accessible to novice sailors whilst its high sail area over weight ratio (17.2m² for 240kg) will get even the most experienced sailors excited. The multihull design enables the Astus 16.1 to achieve greater speeds than a monohull effortlessly, increasing the range of places you can reach within a day. Thanks to its simplicity and versatility you will want to take it to your favourite sailing spots all year long.

The Astus 20.1

Fast, fun and safe, the Astus 20.1 is a friendly trimaran that was designed to offer you, your family and friends endless exhilarating sailing. With its inherent stability, shallow draught, vast cabin and ample storage capacity, the Astus 20.1 is the ideal partner for sail-camping trips - the vast cockpit and comfy trampolines offer plenty of extra sleeping space with ad hoc tents. The multihull design enables the Astus 20.1 to achieve much greater speeds than a monohull, increasing the range of places you can reach within a day.

The Astus 22.1

A new approach to cruising. With half the weight and twice the speed of a monohull cruiser of the same size, the Astus 22.1 brings fresh air to the world of small cruisers. Light, nimble and fast, the Astus 22.1 can take you within a day to destinations that were until now out of reach. More of everything. The Astus 22.1 takes the design of the Astus trimarans further: more speed, more space, and more versatility. With 28 square metres of sail area, it reaches high speeds effortlessly even in light winds. The large cockpit (1.8 metre wide) provides ample space for 8 adults, with vast trampolines providing another 8 square metres of sunbathing space. The vast cabin offers four berths and ample storage and sitting space. Sail effortlessly in total confidence. Higher speeds do not come at the expense of stability or ease of handling. The Astus 22.1 floats, 4.6 metres apart with 850 litres of buoyancy each, provide reassuring stability even in harsh weather conditions. Furthermore, the Astus 22.1 has blocks of polystyrene foam built in the hull to make it unsinkable. Accomodation. The Astus 22.1 offers surprisingly vast accomodation for a trimaran of this size. The twin centreboards free the cabin floor, providing easy access to the four berths and galley area and ample dining space for five people. Easy to live with. The Astus 22.1 is easy to live with: easy to move around and tow due to its light weight, easy to launch and recover due to its telescopic float mounts and singlehanded mast stepping kit. At just 2.53m wide with the floats retracted, the Astus 22.1 can be towed by a medium-sized family car, opening the way to an unlimited variety of sailing grounds. The Astus 22.1 completes the Astusboats range of trimarans at the higher end, alongside the Astus 14.1 dinghy, Astus 16.1 dayboat, and Astus 20.1 weekender
