Inside Pegasus, the First 3D Printed Superyacht

The first 3D printed superyacht in history is a solar-electric hydrogen hybrid with zero emissions.

By Bea Isaacson

Pegasus superyacht exterior

In an exciting world first, the Pegasus superyacht has been successfully 3D printed by Jozeph Forakis. Constructed to be ‘virtually invisible’ both visually and environmentally, the design company is evidently prioritizing sustainability, with the first 3D-printed superyacht also being a solar-electric hydrogen hybrid and zero emissions.

Robotic 3D printing was used to create the mesh framework for integrating both the superyacht’s hull and superstructure. In what will set the industry precedent, the structure is phenomenally strong and lightweight, all whilst using considerably less energy, material, space and waste compared to conventional means of construction.

A bastion of innovation in his industry, Forakis has been at the helm of some of the world’s most exciting product designs over the past few decades. Previous design concepts of his include the award-winning Logitech Cordless Mousman Pro, which transformed the computer mouse design, and the Havana lamp, which is now included in the permanent collection of New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.

“Now is the time for courageous leaps towards our collective sustainable future,” Joseph Forakis said of Pegasus. “Pegasus is a bold but achievable vision for the near future of the superyacht industry, where man and machine live in harmony with nature, rather than compromising it.”

Coming in at 288 ft, the exterior design of Pegasus features a ‘wings’ structure, in which the multi-tiered superstructure includes mirrored glass that reflects the sky and sea of the superyacht’s surroundings.

The glass powers electrolyzers that extract H2 from seawater through its transparent solar panels. Fuel cells subsequently convert H2 to electricity, which is stored in batteries for powering azimuth pods and hotel systems.

The interior of the 3D-printed superyacht is centered around a hydroponic garden monument designed to honor nature. Named the ‘Tree of Life’, the nucleus of the garden provides fresh food and air purification. Its base can be found in a reflecting pool on the lower deck and will extend upwards to all four levels of the ship.

Guest lounges are spaciously designed to also evoke nature, with living greenery and copious daylight streaming inside the superyacht. Also featured is a pool club with open balconies that can transform into a helipad, and an open beach club located at the aft of the ship.

“At Jozeph Forakis design, our experience designing across many industries gives us unique exposure and perspective to various new technology and innovation verticals,” Forakis continued.

“The aimed added value here is the design vision that guides the skilled selection, research, development, and transfer of several critical technologies from disparate industries… to create a unique composition that helps fulfill that vision as a harmonious, original design.”

New to the Fleet: Pegasus Yachts 50

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • March 22, 2024

Pegasus Yachts 50 sailboat

Pegasus Yachts has found strong momentum since the European premiere of its Pegasus 50. With the latest two hulls, Nos. 9 and 10, going to US owners, that momentum is now swinging over to North America.

Located in Slovenia, Pegasus Yachts was founded in 2019 by the same team who, for more than 20 years, built large carbon-displacement cruising yachts with oceangoing capabilities. Miha Breskvar and Marko Paš established Pegasus Yachts for bluewater cruising. The Pegasus 50 is for clients who value fast, lightweight displacement, as well as comfortable living spaces. The Pegasus 50’s flexible layout forward of the salon allows for configurations tailored to cruising plans, crew preferences and the owners’ accommodations needs.

Among the Pegasus 50’s features are a convertible roof with retractable canvas over the cockpit. A tempered-glass sliding door protects the two-step entry to the salon from the cockpit. The living spaces take a note from catamaran design, with 360-degree views from the cockpit, salon and navigation station. Two technical lockers isolate the wet and dry onboard systems from the living space for quieter cruising.

A 75 hp Volvo Penta diesel engine is standard, though Pegasus offers an electric option, found on three of its existing hulls. The P50’s energy package includes a generator, a hydro-generator, and solar integrated into the deck with a 716-watt peak capacity. An optional third LiFePO4 battery adds a capacity of 600 amp-hours at 25.4 volts.

The Pegasus 50 also has an induction cooktop, a watermaker, heating and air conditioning, and a dinghy with an electric outboard that’s stored in the garage for launching from the swim platform.

Construction is vacuum-infusion, with extensive use of carbon and composite for light weight and strength. Displacement is just over 29,000 pounds. A double wing keel reduces leeway, improving the upwind angle with less drag and enhancing close-quarters maneuverability. A carbon mast, performance full-batten mainsail, and self-tacking J2, larger J1 (650 SF) and asymmetrical furling spinnaker are standard. An optional furling reacher/code zero is available.

The Pegasus 50 is rigged for short crew or solo sailing (a P50 won the 2022 OSTAR singlehanded race across the North Atlantic), with all working lines brought back to the helms, each equipped with two electric winches—a convenience for couples and families cruising offshore, as well as the solo speed-seekers who value a certain degree of comfort underway.

From its unwavering commitment to safety to its meticulous attention to quality and craftsmanship, Pegasus stands as a true testament to excellence.

Pegasus Yachts focuses on the following four key elements with their Pegasus 50:

  • Comfort –  360° view makes the saloon bright and spacious. A sliding door and only two steps connect the cockpit and salon in one living space.
  • Safety –  Windshield and solid roof protect you from sun, spray, winds and cold. Substantial railing, massive foot stop, handholds where needed, and carefully thought interior layout help ensure safety on the oceans.
  • Quality –  Non-complex solutions, precise and detailed engineering backed with decades of experience, well-proven installed equipment, and a quality minded team are fundamentals for build quality. Less is more is the name of the game.
  • Speed –  Effortless, fast sailing is possible due to the modern hull lines, reduced displacement, sail plan design and lightweight and solid build. Experienced racers will get the thrill while comfortably cruising the oceans. Some call her a “gentleman’s racing boat.”

Pegasus Yachts shares Zig Ziglar’s philosophy that “it’s easier to explain price  once  than to apologize for quality forever .”

The Pegasus Yachts team has completed more than 160 projects for prominent world-series builders. Ten of those projects have won European Yacht of the Year Awards and more than 50 other national Boat of the Year Awards. One of the founders of Pegasus Yachts, Marko Pas, was previously responsible for the development of Shipman Carbon Yachts and built a total 44 boats of the 5 different models they offered. Shipman Carbon Yachts collectively circumnavigated 36 times in last ten years. Gaining priceless experience directly from owners cruising in most remote world places.

360° view makes the saloon bright and spacious. Sliding door and only two steps connect cockpit and saloon in one unique living space. Cockpit protection against natural elements is integrated in basic design. Dinghy garage takes inflated dinghy up to 2,8 meters.

pegasus iii yacht

Comfort on board Pegasus 50 is all about the view, lots of light and improved ergonomics!

The saloon with a 360° view is designed to extend the cockpit into a bigger, uniform living space and offers protection.

Reduced height between cockpit and saloon level to two! steps only and lots of handholds make moving on board safe and easy.

360° horizon visibility and lots of light and fresh air reduce seasickness and make the saloon a livable and safe space for the crew while sailing.

pegasus iii yacht

The HARD TOP ABOVE COCKPIT and glass windshield protect the cockpit from the harsh environment including sun heat.

Sliding windshield windows, roof hatches and foldable cabrio roof provide light and fresh air when needed.

Roof foldable side wings protect the cockpit from low sun or rain, even while sailing, encapsulate cockpit from three sides.

Extra wide cockpit seats with high backrest for comfortable seating and resting.

Cockpit table with integrated fridge for drinks, handholds, non-slip top surfaces and glass and mug holders.

pegasus iii yacht

GIMBALLED SETTEE mechanism keeps the saloon sofa and table in a leveled position even when the boat is heeled.

This is especially important for long ocean passages, when working and sleeping on a levelled surface substantially reduces fatigue.

The folding and electrically operated dropping saloon table provides easy seat access or delivers a king size lounging couch.

Full visibility forward with all instrumentation and sailing controls for comfortable and safe navigation.

CHART TABLE with storage for books and paper charts

Specially designed navigation seat is oversized for short naps during night watch.

Hatch above navigation seat for fresh air.

pegasus iii yacht

Preparing food or doing the dishes after dinner does not isolate the cook. Galley position between salon and cockpit is inclusive.

Fridges are located and designed for use on the oceans while boats are at high heel.

Central galley furniture element provides a cook full support while preparing food or cooking.

Extended worktop under flipping navigation seat with access to top loading cool box or freezer.

Interior layout concept helps moving inside the boat and comfortable use of toilet and shower while sailing oceans.

The cabins are located far from noise and vibration sources: specially insulated engine, generator and technical areas.

The saloon and cabins are positioned as close to the center of the movement for minimum jaw, pitch and roll whilst at sea.

Owner’s suite with separate shower has possibility to transform king size bed in two separate beds.

pegasus iii yacht

Private beach on folding platform is just a step down from cockpit level.

Most comfortable swimming ladder available.

Dinghy garage under cockpit can take inflated dingy for four persons.

Windshield and hard top roof protect from sun, spray, winds and cold. Substantial railing and massive deck foot stop, handholds where needed and carefully thought interior layouts help ensure safety on the oceans.

Safety is a key feature of the pegasus 50.

A deep and well-protected cockpit, minimized floor HEIGHT between the cockpit, salon and cabins, and an optimized interior layout make Pegasus safe to sail and live on.

Simple, straightforward sailing solutions provide easy and safe shorthanded boat handling. Sailing functions are moved away from the cockpit seating area.

The main sheet arch above the cockpit keeps the highly loaded and dangerous main sheet away from the cockpit.

Sailing Pegasus is safe in all weather conditions, even single-handedly and in every ocean.

DECK & COCKPIT SAFETY

A deep cockpit is designed to give comfortable sitting and protection against all elements.

The tempered glass front windshield offers clear forward visibility, even at night, without reflection.

NO high-loaded and movable main sheet in the cockpit. It is moved on top of the main sheet arch.

Sailing controls moved away from cockpit seating, led back to the steering position and optimized for shorthanded operations.

Massive deck toe rail, extra strong railing and stanchions, and plenty of handholds.

Wide deck passages, clean deck and solid steps to side decks and swim platform for safe movement around the boat.

INTERIOR SAFETY

The safe and close connection between the cockpit and the saloon is separated with only two ergonomically shaped steps.

Reduced interior layout distances prevent falling or slipping while sailing.

An interior layout with a central corridor between cabins and toilets allows safe movement.

A toilet and shower are designed and positioned for use while sailing at high heel angles.

The galley is well thought out, with various body supports for comfortable and safe food preparation.

HULL SAFETY

Balanced, symmetrical, but modern hull shape, with moderate keel draft and good upwind sailing ability.

Advanced keel design with exceptional longitudinal stability, minimum leeway, and sufficient lateral area for low-speed manoeuvrability.

Robust top keel plate construction, bolted into moulded hull recess, to evenly spread keel loads on hull structure. The hull structure is engineered and built for grounding at low speed.

Twin rudders for total control on big seas and redundancy in case of damaging one rudder. Each rudder can be independently operated.

SYSTEMS SAFETY

Accessible, non-corrosive seacocks (through-hull fittings) optimized in number and position (clustering), with clear markings for easier regular inspection and control.

Boat systems are moved out of bilges to preserve equipment from moisture and dirt and for easier access and inspection.

The life raft in the cockpit table is ready for use with one pull-out.

TWO (2) Main Bilge pumps, oversized, as per professional vessels standard.

The boat is separated into three structural watertight compartments.

Last-generation ANCHOR is integrated into the hull recess. It is self-launching from the steering position or bow control.

SAFETY HIGHLIGHTS:

Construction.

Pegasus value is built around meticulous structural engineering and careful composite construction using state-of-the-art production techniques and materials, including carbon fibres. The result is a strong and sound hull structure, perfectly able to sustain loads from any conditions on the sea. A strong and sound but lightweight structure is a key for easy handling and a fast-moving hull through water in any sea state.

KEEL DESIGN

Tandem keel and rudders are designed in collaboration with the most progressive minds in yacht design and engineering, working exclusively for America’s cup teams and top ocean racing yachts. The objective was to reduce leeway, increase directional stability and increase lateral surface by not compromising speed. Increased keel lateral stability is essential for low-speed control of the boat in small ports with strong winds abeam.

BOW CRASH BOX

Hull bow volume under the anchor locker floor is structurally fully insulated in case the bow, floating in the water, hits a big and heavy floating object. Even if the hull gets damaged and penetrated, water remains in this small volume and does not enter the rest of the boat.

Non-complex solutions, precise and detailed engineering backed with experience, well proven installed equipment, and quality minded boatbuilders are fundamental for Build Quality that last. LESS IS MORE is the name of the game.

QUALITY IS PEGASUS DRIVING FORCE.

Pegasus build and engineering team is quality-minded, focusing on simple, straightforward and long-lasting solutions.

We only install equipment that is oversized, well-proven and reliable from trusted suppliers for easy maintenance and simple repair.

We constantly monitor boats in use and replace or improve equipment and solutions to offer Pegasus customers the best possible experience.

The technical compartments are spacious, split by function and easy to reach, so maintenance and repairs can be done comfortably without the need for crawling into or working in tight spaces.

pegasus iii yacht

All the systems were carefully thought through and focused on delivering maximum autonomy.

Boat systems are installed in illuminated compartments.

Systems are easily accessible and separated by function: electrics, engine room and liquids.

We reduced the number of seacocks and optimized their positions.

The main engine and generator are installed in a well-ventilated and accessible engine room.

Increased hull directional stability and perfect sail balance reduce the autopilot’s electrical consumption.

pegasus iii yacht

QUALITY HIGHLIGHTS:

When designing and installing boat systems, Pegasus engineering, assembly and after sales teams are focusing on the possibility to access and inspect installed elements and potential replacements.

Pegasus focuses on collaborating with material suppliers that they know in person, for a long time. It is the personal relationship with business owners and they know their production and products  as suppliers know our product. In times of disturbed supply chains this is the only way to receive real quality products and receive it on time.

Effortless fast sailing due to modern hull lines, reduced total weight, mast and sail plan design and strong and quality-built boat.

pegasus iii yacht

At 20 knots TWS / 100 TWA, with full main and J1, autopilot ON, she will be touching 12,5 knots boat speed while surfing waves.

Pegasus DOES NOT compromise comfort, safety and simplicity by increasing sail area, reducing liquids capacity or proper equipment necessary for freedom at sea.

We developed light but sound and safe boat construction with winning ocean racing designers and engineers using state-of-the-art production technologies, advanced materials, and engineering methods.

pegasus iii yacht

Extended mast crane reduces mast height and weight and increases a mainsail area for light wind performance.

The sail area is kept moderately small for easy handling, optimized for 15-20 knots of wind.

Sailing upwind, the main sail can only be reefed above 22 knots to reduce necessary operations and damaging sails.

From 15 knots TWS on, a self-tacking J2 and full mainsail is a comfortable upwind configuration.

As downwind sails, we use FURLING Code 0 and modern FURLING systems with torque rope for the asymmetric gennaker. Both furled sails can be kept hoisted while cruising.

CONCEPT OF SPEED

Pegasus is, in any sense, NOT a racing boat. The sole focus when designing and building Pegasus is reliability, simplicity while handling with shorthanded crew and increasing comfort staying onboard. Some of the elements mentioned above, are key for fast sailing.

OCEAN RACING

Pegasus 50 has potential, with proper preparations, knowledge, and experience, competitively racing oceans over longer distances. Single handed or shorthanded crew will find good shelter on deck and comfortable stay inside while covering over 300 miles in 24 hours. A “gentlemen’s cruiser” for racers.

OSTAR 2022 WINNER

Markus Moser with Pegasus50#3 WON famous OSTAR race across Nort Atlantic, from Plymouth UK to Newport US. After 19 days of mainly upwind sailing in winds above 30 knots, constant waves crashing on deck and temperatures below 5 deg C, Markus kept enjoying every day of his Atlantic crossing due to safety, comfort, reliability and speed provided from the Pegasus 50.

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Hull, surface is made in recycled carbon 100g/m2 resin rich layer with epoxy/vinyl ester resin. Surface, after demolding, is grinded and applied two layers of epoxy primer. Any colour PU base is applied. Final layer is two component PU clear coat, able to be locally repaired and polished.
  • Colour: any you want.
  • Deck and other composite parts surface are produced in highest quality vinyl ester NPG gel coat with hand applied epoxy/vinyl ester tie-coat.
  • NPG for deck is RAL 9016 and RAL7044.
