Every boat sale is unique and mine had challenges, me being and owner out of state. Stewart stayed reachable and responsive by phone, text and email, getting documents as he said, updating when delayed and finding solutions. At the yard for survey with sea trail...rain, crane operator no show, found way to get 30' boat in water by trailer and we drove it. This after prepping the boat just unwrapped from winter, first start up, cleaned it up and walked me through. He deserved every bit and more his commission and fees that day. Great guy to deal with, informative and encouraging.

I worked with Stewart Roach to sell my boat. Although we were able to find a buyer, he was so unprofessional throughout the entire experience. The entire thing was way more stressful than it should have been - then at the end he stalled with my payment? I wish I would have checked Yelp beforehand.

Snake Oil Salesman - Stay away. Stew is a liar and thief. He advertised my boat had twin 420 HP High Output motors and I paid a premium over another boat to get them. Come to find out my boat has twin 370 HP. When I presented it to him to get a refund, he says it's my fault because my Surveyor didn't pick up on it. There were no engine markings, so how would he or I know? I found out when I registered the boat with Mercury Marine. Stew says he's not responsible for anything he tells you or advertises. He has fine print that disclaims everything. He tried to blame the boat owner, until he provided proof that he gave Stew the correct motor size. We are off to court, as I am turning him into the Attorney General.

I wanted to thank the crew at Norwood Yacht Sales. They are very professional in their approach to buying and selling boats. The first boat that I used them for was for the sale of my Wauquiez 38 Sail Boat. They did a great job in listing, photography, showing and the paperwork in the eventual sale. Its easy to buy a boat, but its not easy to sell a boat. The next was the purchase of a Tayana 48 in Deleware. Stu Roach, coached me all the way through purchase. Thank you.

Stu is simply the best. His firm embodies excellence from the mundane of everyday research to the complexities of dealing sellers and buyers. I have sold and purchased several yachts with the help of Stu Roach. Knowledgeable, personable and accessible are adjectives that immediately come to mind. Working with Stu and his colleagues is the most rewarding boating related relationship I've had over the past 10 years and I would recommend Norwood Yacht Sales without the least bit of hesitancy and with complete confidence.

One of the very most unprofessional companies I have ever witnessed they had a drive almost 2 days to look at a vessel that they said was running good condition and ready for a sea trial an clean upon survey both engines couldn't run 1 was losing oil fast the other 1 was full of gasoline bilge was full of antifreeze and oil. When I call the owner of Norwood yacht sales his answer was we don't care if it doesn't meet us coast guard standards and we also don't care "if the vessel is sea worthy I told him I had to have my family in a safe vessel he did not care.

norwood yacht sales reviews

I would not recommend this company to anyone drove a long ways to see a boat that they have a listed in good shape and would do a sea trial. boat was in poor shape would not pass a survey when I told a broker he said he didn't care about us coast guard standards and didn't care about being a sea worthy vessel. he was selling boats I would not recommend this company to anyone..

Matt I am sorry that you had such a poor showing showing on the 32 Carver. When I spoke with you on the phone I tried to make it clear that the boat had just been launched and the seller was having some engine issues and that we preferred not to show the boat over the July 4th weekend but rather delay your showing until the following week until we could personally sea test the boat in advance and then invite you to come up from Tennessee. Our office staff was headed for a much needed break after working the last 2 months 7 days a week through the spring rush. You stated on July 3, 2020 " You could fix anything and you were not concerned with the boat being washed or pre sea trialed by our office, furthermore you wanted to visit some friends in the area as you stated you once lived in Brockton, MA. On Saturday you announced that you were in route to Boston and were going to visit friends and look at another few boats in the area and we would catch up on Tuesday. Upon your arrival you some how managed to talk your way into the seller's yacht club and examine the boat on your own. On the phone you stated that the boat was not up to coast guard standards and that the seller should sell you the boat for half the asking price. The seller was 60 miles from the boat and we could not verify the issues discovered. In turn you drove back to Tennessee since the seller would not sell for half its value. As brokers, we never had a written purchase and sale nor a deposit. We never told you to drive such a great distance. In the future before you jump in a car you should have an offer in place and have the boat surveyed so that you do not waste your time driving such a distance. Question: If you look at a house with a realtor and you don't like the house, do you give that broker a bad review?

Norwood yacht sales is an absolute joke, they tried to pull a fast one on me saying only minor issues to address when in fact there was well over $15,000 dollars in repairs that needed to be addressed. They ignored calls once I paid to launch the boat which I was unaware of due to their tricky wording in the contract, I also paid to pull the boat which never did happen. Long story short I'm out $1250.00 because of a dishonest company trying to make a dishonest buck. They are plenty other companies out there, be sure to try them first

Photo of Mark C.

I would never use Norwood yacht sales. Dan only returns calls occasionally. they make promises they don't keep. Dan tries selling my boat for over a year. as soon as I switched brokers my boat sold within a week. Dan will tell you what you want to hear but beware cause what he says and what he will do is not even close. I think he should stick to taking of his dogs in office cause he does not have good contacts or relations with local marinas and dealers.

Dear Mark, I think you left the part our where we showed the boat to a client who later came back and bought it directly from you on the dock, after you timely cancelled your agreement. There was no other broker.

I wanted to give an honest assessment of Norwood Yacht Sales. I contacted Stewart to sale my 35' boat and from the beginning he was open and honest. We discussed pricing and it was definitely a collaborative approach on setting the price. He did not press me, rush me, or set lowball pricing. As it was fall, I knew I would not get premium price so I set the price accordingly. Stewart kept me informed on the progresses and answered all of my calls and he would speak candidly on where we were. I knew from our conversations that he was working hard to put the boat "in the best possible light" for viewing. He went above and beyond on his effort and would often say.."don't worry about it, I got it". We did close on the boat quickly and he managed that whole process. Did I get top dollar....um..no, of course not...it is in the dead of winter and I wanted to close on a sale. Was I happy with Stewart and how he handled the process? Absolutely, 100%. He is a great communicator, really knows boats and I believe works hard (whether a buying or selling) to get a win-win. Thanks again NYS.

I had a world-class experience working with Stu Roche. I have never volunteered to write a recommendation for a company before. I signed on with Norwood Yacht Sales a little over a year ago. My boat was not what you would call a prime yacht. It was about a 20-year-old 33 foot sport fish That definitely had some serious wear to it. Stewart was tenacious. He worked so hard to sell my boat. He did all the extras on his own that it took to get that boat to look as good as it could. And when the starboard engine blew out during the sales process Stu helped me in ways that I would never ever have been able to handle on my own. His knowledge and experience are just what you want in your boat broker. But more importantly, when another broker might've said, call me again when you get it fixed, stu stayed with me every step of the way giving me expert advice and sharing his knowledge and know how in ways that I would never ever have been able to access on my own. Stu was able to sell the boat as is, before we got it fixed for a reasonable price. It was just an amazing effort and commitment on his part. He's a madman in the best way for people who are trying to sell their boats.

“My experience with Norwood Yacht Sales”

My name is Carlos I live in Miami and I want to share my experience with Mr. Stewart J. Roach, I traveled from Miami to Boston to see one of his boats for sale, I loved the boat I bought it and I drove with the boat to Miami, Stewart J. Roach is an excellent person, I had an excellent treatment, I am leaving very happy with the business that I do with him, and believe me I recommend them 100% he is a very professional person with a lot of experience, and an excellent human being, thanks Stewart J. Roach for everything.

“Un professional and dishonest broker”

I am writing because i am not happy with the waste of time and information this agent is with holding. His name is Tony Lavin and works for Blackfish Marine 1815 Maritime Mews. He is selling a 2005 meridian 34 and represents the boat as having only 650 hrs only after much digging do i find out the boat actually has over 3000 hrs and he says that doesnt matter because it the engines that matter. He is very dishonest and also doesnt disclose the reall hrs because it was probably used as a charter and the boat is very worn out. I am tired of people like this wasting peoples time. I will let every one know what kind of brokers work there

How a cargo ship took down Baltimore’s Key Bridge

To bridge experts, the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after being hit by a heavy cargo ship was as inevitable as it was devastating.

When a vessel as heavy as the Singapore-flagged Dali crashes with such force into one of the span’s supercolumns, or piers, the result is the type of catastrophic, and heartbreaking, chain reaction that took place early Tuesday.

“If the column is destroyed, basically the structure will fall down,” said Dan Frangopol, a bridge engineering and risk professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania who is president of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety. “It’s not possible to redistribute the loads. It was not designed for these things.”

No bridge pier could withstand being hit by a ship the size of the Dali, said Benjamin W. Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

“These container ships are so huge,” Schafer said. “That main span has two supports. You can’t take one away.” He called the accident “a huge infrastructure failure,” but not because of the bridge collapse; he said the shipping industry needs systems to keep a ship on track when it loses power, as the Dali did before the collision.

The bridge itself, which carried more than 30,000 vehicles daily, appeared to be structurally sound. Its condition was rated fair, according to data in the 2023 National Bridge Inventory maintained by the Federal Highway Administration. Maryland state officials said they were focused on search-and-rescue operations and did not provide later inspection data. National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said excavating detailed inspection history information — and what was done in response to any earlier findings — will be a cumbersome and protracted part of the agency’s investigation.

But bridge safety and engineering experts are emphasizing a separate issue: protective barriers.

When the span opened to traffic in 1977, many ships were smaller and the standards for protecting bridges against them were lower, they said.

A few years later, a Liberian cargo ship crashed into a bridge in Florida , sending a Greyhound bus, a pickup truck and six cars into the Tampa Bay and killing 35 people, according to the NTSB. That deadly 1980 collision helped lead to the adoption of stronger national standards for bridges, including protection from errant ships, in the years that followed, safety experts said.

Sherif El-Tawil, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at University of Michigan with expertise in bridges, said if the Key Bridge had been built after those updated standards from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials were put in place, the span could still be standing.

“I believe it would have survived,” El-Tawil said.

Maryland officials did not answer questions Tuesday about what protective devices were in place near the bridge and whether they were sufficient to withstand this type of collision.

Two examples of protective measures that did not appear to have been in place, El-Tawil said, were large fenders designed to direct marine traffic away from the bridge supports and an island built around the pier.

Some states are building these kinds of protection systems around vital bridges. Last year, officials from a joint New Jersey and Delaware bridge authority announced work on eight 80-foot-wide, stone-filled cylinders designed to protect the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The existing protection for the bridge tower piers dates to 1951. “Today’s tankers and ships are bigger and faster than those of the 1950s and 1960s,” the officials said in announcing the nearly $93 million project.

State departments of transportation “are aware of the shortcomings of these bridges,” said Roberto T. Leon, a bridge and structural engineering professor at Virginia Tech. “It’s not that they don’t know. It’s a matter of prioritizing the repairs. It is a very expensive proposition to protect a bridge.”

Ian Firth, a British structural engineer and bridge designer, said he was “not surprised” at how quickly the bridge came down after it was hit. He noted that the support structure that was struck, which would have been made of reinforced concrete, was one of two main supports responsible for doing “all the work” to hold up the bridge.

He said the ship appeared to have strayed to one side before striking the bridge.

The bridge collapse, like other calamities, is probably the result of overlapping low-probability failures, said Edward Tenner, a historian and expert on disasters — akin to what happens when, by chance, the holes in a stack of Swiss cheese slices line up perfectly.

“This might have been a case where there were just an unlikely series of failures,” said Tenner, author of “Why Things Bite Back,” a book about technology and its unanticipated consequences. But he added, “I suspect there was something about the equipment of a huge ship like that, given the potential for damage like this, there should have been more redundancy. There shouldn’t have been one point of failure that could lead to a catastrophe.”

Speaking Tuesday afternoon in Baltimore, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called the accident “a unique circumstance,” adding, “I do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact from a vessel of this size.”

The ship was towed into the Patapsco River initially, but the tugboats did not accompany the ship all the way to the bridge, said John Konrad, a retired ship captain who runs the gCaptain maritime news website and co-authored a book on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill .

“The safe thing to do is keep the tugs,” Konrad said. “Moving forward, I think that’s going to happen. The Coast Guard is going to say you’ve got to keep the tugs tied up until you pass the bridge.”

In video imagery, the ship can be seen losing electrical power, then briefly regaining it before going completely dark. The ship then veers to the right, directly toward the bridge’s structural support.

The rudder may have gotten stuck in a position that caused the ship to turn, said a senior retired maritime official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity while waiting for more details on the incident. It’s also possible that an incoming tide could have been a factor, he said.

“Obviously, they could not control the ship. They could not stop the ship,” he said.

A deficiency in the Dali’s systems was discovered when the ship was inspected in June, records show. Inspectors at the port of San Antonio, Chile, discovered a problem categorized as relating to “propulsion and auxiliary machinery,” according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental shipping regulator in the Asia-Pacific region. The issue was classified in the subcategory of “Gauges, thermometers, etc,” but no additional details of the deficiency were provided. The problem was not serious enough to warrant detaining the ship, according to the records.

After a follow-up inspection later the same day, the Dali was found to have no outstanding deficiencies, the records show, indicating that the problem was addressed.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said at a news conference Tuesday that the Dali lost power and issued an emergency call for help shortly before the freighter crashed into the bridge. The “mayday” distress call allowed officials to halt vehicle traffic headed over the bridge and saved lives, Moore said.

Erin Cox, Tom Jackman, Jon Swaine, Joyce Lee and Mark Johnson contributed to this report.

An earlier version of this article misstated the title of Edward Tenner's book. It is "Why Things Bite Back." This version has been corrected.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Two people were rescued and the remaining six are presumed dead, officials said. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power moments before colliding with the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds. Read everything we know about the bridge collapse .

Victims: All six missing victims are presumed dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said, and the agency has ended rescue efforts. The entire crew aboard the 985-foot container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent “mayday.” It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the city’s port, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spans the Patapsco River. Here’s a list of other major bridge collapses in U.S. history .
