This is the stunning new Pininfarina Pura Vision, a luxury electric land yacht

Pininfarina's follow-up to the Battista is this bonkers four-seat luxury EV with rear-hinged doors and much power

Pininfarina Pura Vision electric SUV revealed 2023

In Seventies Top Trumps  land, Pininfarina was one of the kings. As well as clothing virtually every major Ferrari from 1951 until the Prancing Horse took its design destiny in-house in 2011, these guys regularly smashed it out of the park when it came to concept cars. Case in point: the Modulo , which rebodied a Ferrari 512 S endurance racing car as a flying saucer. To this day, it remains the show car to end all show cars, a four-wheeled WTF (not least because using a 512 S as a donor car is majorly punchy).

Now meet the Pura Vision, the follow-up to the Pininfarina Battista . At this point we must remind you that these are the products of Automobili Pininfarina, which is a separate entity to the original carrozzeria . It's effectively a start-up whose goal is to be the world’s leading purveyor of luxury electric cars. Since 2018, a team of 116 has been building and refining the Battista 1,876bhp hypercar, while new CEO Paolo Dellachà, formerly chief product and engineering officer, insists the company’s financials are increasingly robust.

We like the Battista a lot, but the Pura Vision is something else altogether. Car designers will give you chapter and verse on the importance of stance and proportion, but this thing gleefully rips the rule book to shreds. Look how shallow the glasshouse is compared to the body. Check out the Pura Vision’s floating roof. Stare if you dare into its minimalist face and notice the way the cockpit sits within the body. It even has preposterous front and rear ‘suicide’ doors.

It’s also huge, almost six metres long, two metres wide and 1.7m tall, and has the imperious bearing of an automotive super yacht. The nautical parallel is encouraged by design boss Dave Amantea, who says the Pura Vision looks especially like a boat from above. Dave, it should be noted, is also one of the world’s most enthusiastic human beings.

“The first iteration dates back to 2018. A 40 per cent scale model was presented in 2019, and we wanted to gather, not suggestions as such, but the vibes and understanding of what our customers wanted,” he explains. “We have to bring the customer to the centre of our project. Remember, these guys own everything. They’re probably getting a little bored because they can buy anything they want. This is the most difficult segment to make ‘wow!’ to the people.”

This surely gives Automobili Pininfarina scope, if not total carte blanche, to go a bit nuts. They have delivered. Although its production targets are more ambitious for the quasi-SUV than the Battista – think into the thousands rather than 150 – imagine you’re a cash rich tech bro (or sister) on the hunt for something electrified but outrageous. The Pura Vision manages to look very Silicon Valley while channelling Pininfarina’s history. The lounge doors are a nod to 1956’s Lancia Florida, the roof – currently being co-developed with a Swiss specialist – echoes the Modulo, and the body section where the doors meet is a conscious link to the Battista. A central ‘biscotto’ supports the curved single-piece side windows, which are integral to the doors. The headlights are hidden and use L.E.S.S nanofibre technology; the fibres measure less than one millimetre thick.

It sits on 23 inch wheels, the minimum diameter on a vehicle with proportions as bonkers as these, its tyres wearing an elegant white pinstripe. The rear tapers in beautifully, another aspect best appreciated from above – a vantage point Dave the designer actively encourages. A ring of anodised aluminium runs around the car’s beltline.

Nor is it overcooked. Amantea says that simplicity underpins everything, partly because the purer the surfaces the greater the contrast that can be achieved when clients start spending big in the bespoke department. The body on the show car is finished in Bianco Sestriere Gloss paint, with powerful contrasting exposed carbon fibre on the body’s lower elements.

“Details are vital. You need the unexpected element that pops out to give you the emotion,” Amantea says. “You have to amaze the customer, balance the classic effect with the futurism. The idea of finding beauty in imperfection, it’s in our bones. It’s about finding the perfect emotion not the perfect alignment of line.”

The interior is equally fabulous, contains four ‘floating’ captain’s chairs, and aims for an airier sensation than the exterior suggests. The central display rises into view when needed, disappears out of view when not. Each head-rest has a speaker to create individual sound zones. Charcoal leather on the dashboard and door tops creates an ‘accent band’ that mirrors the aluminium one on the outside. The centre console, upper seatbacks and headlining combine 30 per cent wool and 70 per cent recycled polyester. There’s a fridge hidden between the rear seats.

Automobili Pininfarina calls the Pura Vision an ‘e-LUV’ – electric luxury utility vehicle – an abbreviation that might get lost in translation anywhere within the M62. We love it all the same, for its colossal ambition and emotive cab-rear design. No news yet on what platform it might use or the extent of its electric powertrain. A deal is being done on the former, with the latter being shared with the Battista. So it will have the performance to back up its presence.

Legendary car design firm and coachbuilder Pininfarina recently revealed a concept car that it believes to be the future of luxury SUVs .

The Pininfarina Pura Vision concept is an ultra-luxury EV SUV that showcases the premium materials, design principles, and tech that the coachbuilder will equip its future vehicles with — giving car enthusiasts an exciting look into future production Pininfarina vehicles.

The ultra-luxury SUV gracefully blends the design principles of past Pininfarina-designed sports cars with the more elegant and timeless aesthetics that define modern vehicles. A combination of high-tech equipment, space, and elegance makes the Pura Vision a true futuristic land yacht.

The Pininfarina Pura Vision Is A Peek Into The Future Of Ultra-Luxury SUVs

Pininfarina says the Pura Vision isn't an SUV and is more of a LUV — Luxury Utility Vehicle. It's an EV concept with an elegant timeless design inspired by sailboats and yachts.

The coachbuilder's designers focused on a few key factors to create the Pura Vision's eye-catching sleek exterior, the most major of which is the beauty of simplicity. The EV greets on-lookers with its minimalist design which its smooth, expansive white-colored exterior panels and sharp exterior lines highlight.

Despite the vehicle's sports car-esque sloping silhouette, its low hood, high fenders, and bold upper body give the vehicle a more powerful and imposing SUV-like stance. The Pura Vision's designers said that the 1947 Cisitalia 202 Gran Sport , a beautiful Pininfarina-designed sports car that became the first car in the Museum of Modern Art's collection, inspired this particular design language.

The Pura Vision's occupants, however, get a better deal by getting to witness and experience the vehicle's luxurious yacht-inspired interior.

The horizontal boom of a sail on a yacht inspired the floating center console that houses the vehicle's infotainment screen. While the foil of a sailboat inspired the vehicle's two front floating seats.

According to Pininfarina, the vehicle serves as a peek into the future vehicles of the company — vehicles that will exemplify the "Pura" design principles its designers applied to the Pura Vision concept car. By taking design principles from some of Pininfarina's greatest vehicles and adding modern design aesthetics, the legendary coachbuilder was able to create a pioneering futuristic vehicle with iconic and timeless looks.

Passengers Get A High-Tech Futuristic Ride On The Pininfarina Pura Vision

As the Pura Vision showcases the future of Pininfarina, it is only right that the vehicle is chock full of tech.

The EV treats drivers to a wide digital display that contains the vehicle's instrument clusters. Vehicle photos reveal the driver's digital display showing vehicle information as well as an interesting navigation app with 3D buildings and objects.

Flanking the steering wheel and driver's digital display are two knobs with small digital displays — one for gear shifting and another for selecting what seems to be driving modes. Drivers also get a head-up display.

One of the main design elements in the front half of the cabin is the floating center console which houses the center infotainment screen. While drivers and occupants use the screen, it holds a low angle and hosts a variety of vehicle controls.

RELATED: Automobili Pininfarina Imagines Electric Luxury With The PURA Vision Design Concept

Interestingly, it folds flush against the center console when it isn't in use. By folding, Pininfarina says it reduces distractions and enhances the airy atmosphere of the passenger cabin as it reveals additional space that extends to the driver and passenger footwells while it's stowed. The luxury vehicle also has a touchscreen panel on the front driver-side door to control other vehicle functionalities such as selecting music.

It also has hidden headlights that only reveal themselves when in use. While hidden, the 0.04-inch ultra-slim daytime running lights steal the show. According to Pininfarina, it uses L.E.S.S. nanofiber lighting tech that'll eventually make its way to future vehicles thanks to the versatility of the tech.

The Pura Combines The SUV Ruggedness With Ultra-Luxury Car Styling

Contrasts are one of the highlights of the car's design philosophy as it manages to pull off a sports car silhouette in an SUV body — a contrast found on other high-performance SUVs like the Ferrari Purosangue super-SUV . Highlighting this particular contrast is the Pura Vision's pristine smooth white body panels that are right up against the aggressive exposed carbon fiber elements in the vehicle's lower half.

RELATED: The Real Reason Ferrari And Pininfarina Stopped Collaborating

However, there are plenty more contrasts on the vehicle. For example, its rugged-looking matte black 23-inch wheels give the appearance of an off-roader. Yet, Pininfarina matched it with the sleek elegant lines of the rest of the Pura Vision's luxurious exterior, just like on this off-roading custom Ferrari Purosangue pickup truck render.

Pininfarina Pura Vision Features

  • Matte black 23-inch wheels with all-terrain tires
  • Floating seats
  • Roomy cabin with a cocoon-like effect
  • Wine cooler
  • Champagne flutes
  • Speakers in each headrest
  • Interior and exterior exposed carbon fiber

The rugged yet luxurious contrast extends to the vehicle's interior, where occupants experience a roomy cabin with a cocoon-like effect, an expansive glass roof, premium materials, and a wine cooler with accompanying champagne flutes. The Pura Vision also has speakers in each seat headrest giving individual passengers a bespoke listening experience.

All The Doors On The Pininfarina Pura Vision Open In A Unique Way

Getting in the Pininfarina Pura Vision will surely capture the attention of everyone around the vehicle thanks to its unique stargate doors. These unique pillarless doors open in three ways. The front doors open just like any other vehicle, while the rear doors are suicide doors just like the Ferrari Purosangue . Where it differs however is its windows that open upward just like a gullwing door.

According to the Pura Vision's designers, they took inspiration from the doors of the elegant yet oddly named Lancia Florida .

Even the two-part tailgate opens in a unique way. First, the upper window of the tailgate swings upward. Next, the lower half slides out like a drawer before folding downward and revealing a flat surface. Dividing the two sides of the rear cargo area is a light strip right down the middle.

The Pura Vision Concept SUV Is Full Of Sustainable And Recycled Materials

More and more automakers are incorporating sustainable materials into their vehicles. Pininfarina is betting on innovative sustainably sourced, and recycled materials for the premium interior of its future vehicles as well.

RELATED: Here’s Why EVs Aren’t The ‘Only’ Solution For A Sustainable Future

The seats of the Pura Vision have real zero-impact leather upholstery. This means, Pininfarina ethically sourced the leather from sustainable leather supplier Dani, a firm that tans leather using sustainable methods. The coachbuilder says it chose not to use vegan leather as it primarily uses environmentally damaging petroleum-based production methods.

Furthermore, the Pura Vision has pieces of the world's fastest production EV — the Pininfarina Battista . Pininfarina used recycled aluminum bits from the EV hypercar's production process as sparkly design elements that it calls "aluminum jewels." On the Pura Vision, these aluminum jewels accent the Pininfarina plaque on the driver-side step.

Other sustainably sourced premium materials on the vehicle include a natural wool and recycled polyester blend fabric with a herringbone pattern. Recycled PET bottles served as the raw materials for the innovative fabric blend.

The Pura Vision also has carpets made out of ECONYL — a nylon material that comes from discarded fishing nets.

Artemis (Audi Landjet/Landyacht) will do 450+ miles range [Update]

  • Audi's next-generation electric car will be inspired by the Audi grandsphere concept
  • Will be made in Hannover, Germany, starting around 2026
  • Level 3 autonomous driving, ultra-fast charging & next-gen CARIAD software expected
  • Won't replace the A8, which will remain Audi's figurehead for a number of years to come

Update: ‘Platform’ sub-section of ‘Specifications’ and ‘Release Date’ section updated.

The Audi Landjet looks set to take four-ringed brand into the future of motoring, and here’s everything we know about the next-generation Audi electric car:

According to a Top Gear report dated September 30, 2022, the Audi grandsphere concept, unveiled in 2021, is the precursor to the highly anticipated Audi Landjet model. Oliver Hoffmann, BoM member responsible for Technical Development, Audi, told the British publication that the show car “gives a clear view to the first Artemis car.” Hoffmann went on to state that Audi will use both exterior and interior design of the open-top sphere concept for the dealer-bound EV.

Audi grandsphere exterior live image

The Audi grandsphere is a low-slung, highly aerodynamic, avant-garde four-door. It’s no ordinary sedan by any means. It blends the characteristics of a grand tourer and a shooting brake as well. And interestingly, it’s almost impossible to figure that out if you’re looking at it from the front three quarters. The designers have discretely packaged the dramatic proportions at the rear.

The Audi grandsphere concept has a striking appearance at the front with the concave hexagonal Singleframe and the narrow headlights that look like focused eyes. On the sides, the chief design element is the dynamically sloping arc of the roofline akin to Audi Sportback models. Also worth noting are the 23-inch wheels inspired by the Audi Avus from the 1990s. As for the rear, the boat tail looks like a piece of art, and would be the talking point if translated into production.

Audi grandsphere interior cabin seats

The real highlight of the Audi grandsphere is its futuristic interior. In fact, getting the interior right was so important in this case that Audi designed the concept from the inside out. The company is reimagining the interior of its cars with the trio of sphere concepts (Skysphere, Grandsphere, and Urbansphere) for the future when autonomous driving will be the new normal.

With reversed rear doors and no B-pillars, the grandsphere concept gives a grand welcome to its occupants, and in no time, the sense of spaciousness, opulence, and future forwardness starts reeling in. The 2+2 seater provides the most attractions for the passengers in the front seats, not in the rear seats like traditional sedans. It’s ready for Level 4 autonomous driving, on enabling which the steering wheel and pedals disappear. There’s no traditional dashboard either, and effectively, the car becomes a spacious first-class lounge.

Audi grandsphere dashboard without steering wheel

The Audi Landjet should be a revolutionary product at Audi, and that’s exactly how Marc Lichte, Head of Design, Audi, described the project while speaking to caranddriver.com in December 2020. At Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event in March 2021, Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, had hinted that the development of the dealer-bound Audi Landjet concept (the Audi grandsphere) will begin shortly.

After almost nine months, we have now reached an important project milestone and successfully completed the concept phase for the first model based on the Artemis. We are now starting serial development of this project. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, in March 2021 (Volkswagen Group Power Day)

Neither an ‘A’ nor a ‘Q’ model

In an interview with Wirtschafts Woche in January 2021, Duesmann discussed the branding of the Landjet. He said that “the first from the new Artemis e-car business unit,” internally called Audi Landjet, will belong to a “new vehicle category.” It will be neither a large sedan positioned above the Audi A8 (and thus not an Audi A9) nor a large SUV positioned above the Audi Q7 . It’s not an “A or Q” series car, Duesmann confirmed.

Traditional grille

Audi grandsphere front cropped

While all developments so far indicate an unconventional design for the Audi Landjet, some things are likely to be traditional. For instance, the front-end of the car will likely feature a Singleframe grille. Singleframe is a signature design element of Audi, and it won’t go away despite the fact that EVs don’t need large grilles

The German automaker has said that the Singleframe grille will appear on even self-driving Audi models, MotorTrend reported on July 19, 2021. The large front grille is as crucial to aesthetics as functionality, perhaps even more so in the EV era where designs are changing drastically with the flexibility that electric powertrains provide. It will continue being a part of the “electric face,” as the company’s designers refer to the front-end of Audi EVs.

New materials

Norbert Weber, head of Interior Design, Audi, has suggested that the company will use alternative interior materials that are easy on both environment and animals in its upcoming EVs. Speaking to CarBuzz , he said that the company is developing vegan materials and considering surrogate leather. Soon, Audi models will have new materials, textures, and fabrics, the design chief added.

Specifications

According to a report Automobilwoche released on December 5, 2022, an ‘SSP 61’ platform, a version of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), will underpin Audi Artemis models. Previously, during Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement, Duesmann confirmed mixed usage of PPE and SSP elements as well as a unified battery cell format.

With the Audi Artemis model, we will be spearheading major modules of the SSP starting in 2025. It symbolizes the transition from the PPE platform to the SSP. And with E3 2.0 and the new unified battery cell format, it already brings an important part of the SSP into serious production from 2026 onwards. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Audi PPE Audi Landjet specs

Duesmann indicated at Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event that the Audi Landjet will debut the parent company’s unified battery cell format, which offers the best conditions for the eventual transition to solid-state battery technology. He said:

The model (Artemis) will play a key role in its respective model series. Among other things, it will be the spearhead of our electronic platform. This first model based on Artemis will also be the first one to use a new unified battery cell format. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group Power Day 2021)

At the Audi Annual Media Conference 2022 on March 17, 2022, Oliver Hoffmann reaffirmed that the Audi Artemis model will be Volkswagen Group’s first EV to feature battery cells built with unified technology.

In the Group we also opted for a streamlined, harmonized cell technology and the Artemis project, which customers will see in 2025, this harmonized cell format will be applied for the first time in a Group vehicle. Audi has a pioneering role in that, and it also ties in with this unified technology in terms of achieving a volume effect as well. Oliver Hoffmann, BoM member – Technical Development, Audi (Audi Annual Media Conference 2022 on March 17, 2022)

Audi grandsphere side profile

By 2030, the SSP will cover a bigger volume than the PPE and the MEB put together. Volkswagen Group wants to sell more than 40 million vehicles based on the SSP over its lifetime. Duesmann said at the New Auto strategy announcement event that the rollout of the new mechatronics platform and the related reduction in complexity will be faster than ever before.

Battery & Motor

The grandsphere concept offers clues on what Audi has in mind for its new electric flagship and next-gen born-EV models. The grandsphere has two electric motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear, generating 530 kW (710 hp) of combined power and 960 Nm (708 lb.-ft.) of combined torque. Feeding these high-output motors is a 120 kWh battery pack that can provide a range of more than 750 km (466 miles) when driving efficiently. This would be in the ballpark of the Mercedes EQS sedan which does 770 km (478 miles) in the WLTP metric.

The system voltage is double the norm – 800 volts, so rapid or ultra-fast charging is possible. The maximum DC charging rate is 270 kW, and it allows charging from 5 to 80% in less than 25 minutes. Just ten minutes of charging can provide a range of more than 300 km (186 miles).

Dedicated charging network

Dedicated Audi electric car charging hub

Audi is rolling out a high-power charging (HPC) network across Europe that is exclusive to its customers. The company opened a pilot HPC outlet with six reservable charging points with up to 320 kW in Nuremberg, Germany, in 2022. A second compact pilot site is coming up in Zurich, Switzerland by December 2022, followed by more sites in Salzburg and Berlin in Germany. The company’s home market will get additional charging stations in 2023 and 2024. These would be accessible to customers of the Audi Landjet.

New vehicle software architecture

The Audi Artemis will debut a new-generation vehicle software architecture called E³ 2.0, and CARIAD will be responsible for the development of the same. Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO, CARIAD, announced this development at Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

We will integrate our stack 2.0 in Audi’s Artemis project for the first time in 2025. Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO, CARIAD (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

CARIAD business model

With CARIAD, we are fully committed to developing the leading automotive software stack in the industry. We are moving towards a synergetic business model. Most of the software-related R&D costs of the brand have been shifted to CARIAD, which will be reported as a standalone entity in the future. The CARIAD business model foresees a significant upfront investment phase of about 2 to 2.5 billion Euros per year. In the income phase, CARIAD will receive licensable fees paid by the brands or paid by potential third parties for the software use. This already started with the rollout of the ID family architecture. Arno Antlitz, CFO, Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Duesmann talked about the benefits of the E³ 2.0 software architecture at the New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

When it comes to the advantages and performance of the SSP, E3 2.0 is probably the best example. Especially E³ 2.0 as one of the high-value modules will be the enabler for a growing portfolio of software services. Through this electronic architecture, we will be able to provide new functionalities quickly and efficiently to our customers across the group and we will realize significant economies of scale. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Level 3 & Level 4 autonomous driving capability

VW and Bosch have joined hands to develop the software required to build Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities for VW Group’s future cars, such as the Artemis project, according to an Automotive News report dated January 26, 2022. Bosch will get the marketing rights in the agreement, and VW will use Bosch’s AOS operating system for autonomous driving.

CARIAD CEO Dirk Hilgenberg told journalists on January 25, 2022, that the Bosch-VW partnership will help Audi catch up with the Artemis Project. Hilgenberg said that even though the brands will start work on Level 2+ and Level 3 technologies, the Artemis will also be Level 4 ready.

Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving require considerable driver intervention and are not fully autonomous. However, Level 4 autonomous driving is a ‘High Automation’ level, where systems do not require inputs from the driver but their functions are limited to some areas—such as in a parking lot or on highways. The driver needs to take control when the vehicle leaves the defined areas, like when it drives into town.

Germany’s federal cabinet has passed the draft for fully autonomous driving, which would serve as the model for other EU countries. Mercedes-Benz already offers Level 3 autonomous driving in the country, as an optional package, with the S-Class. The Audi Landjet will be technically ready for Level 4 autonomous driving. In Level 4 on the highway, the driver would “no longer need to operate the car,” and so, he/she would “no longer have to be able to reach the steering wheel and the touchscreens” with hands all the time,” Lichte said.

Volkswagen Group has allocated the Audi Artemis project production to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hannover plant. The German factory will manufacture a slew of BEVs in the future.

Hannover would entirely change with the ID. Buzz . Launched next year, we are entering the BEV world. The most interesting German premium car, the Artemis, will be built in Hannover as well. In addition, we are expanding our body manufacturing for a new model of Bentley. With the MOIA shuttles and the ID. Buzz AD, this site will be spearheading autonomous driving. Hannover will be a technology driver for the entire group. Dr. Herbert Diess, ex-CEO, Volkswagen Group (Supervisory Board meeting on December 9, 2021)

Release Date

Originally, Audi’s plan was to make the Artemis electric car available to customers in 2024. Various external and internal factors have officially delayed the release date to the second half of the decade.

For a few years now, Volkswagen Group has been announcing new software platforms and autonomous driving functions for its future electric cars, especially those originally scheduled for around 2025. However, these planned groundbreaking innovations are repeatedly pushing back launches, especially those from Audi and Porsche.

According to an Automobilwoche report dated December 5, 2022, the originally conceived Audi Artemis is dead. Oliver Blume, the CEO of Volkswagen Group (and also Porsche), has “pulled the plug” on the former prestigious project, the German publication said. Volkswagen Group hasn’t confirmed this rumor, but Blume has scheduled a new software strategy announcement on December 15, 2022, during which he could share an update on this matter.

For now, it’s best not to pin your hopes on the Audi Artemis electric car. It will probably go on sale closer to 2027 and the final car might not be as radical as Duesmann and other executives were pitching it back in 2020.

Previously, according to a report Automobilwoche published on July 10, 2022, Audi won’t conduct the launch until the end of 2026, perhaps even 2027. Investors, dealers, and prospective customers would surely be disappointed, but the German automaker has come up with an interim solution.

Audi Artemis VW Trinity Audi Apollon release date

Automobilwoche claimed in the July 2022 report that Audi will launch “a slimmed-down version” of the originally planned model (that will now arrive in 2026 or 2027) with a “higher body shape” to fulfill its promise of releasing an efficient electric car from Artemis by the middle of the decade. Internally called ‘Audi Landyacht,’ this model won’t be as advanced with respect to autonomous driving capabilities, which could mean that it won’t support Level 4 hands-free driving, at least not at launch. Instead of Software 2.0, it’ll settle for Software 1.2.

Audi to focus on luxury models

Audi has confirmed that there would be no successor to the Q2, and the carmaker is not going ahead with developing a new A1. In early 2022, Duesmann told German business newspaper Handelsblatt that the VW Group has redefined the roles of its brands, and Audi has been realigned as a premium carmaker. As such, Audi is limiting its model range downward while expanding upward with cars like the Q8 e-tron, Artemis and Apollon .

Audi activesphere concept

The Audi activesphere concept is the fourth and final member of the Audi sphere family of concept cars. Like the other three EV models introduced progressively since August 2021, it has a unique character designed as per the needs of people with an active lifestyle.

Audi activesphere concept front three quarter teaser

The activesphere concept is a soft off-roader that blends a poised two-door coupe with a few traits of an SUV, such as high ground clearance, black fender flares, knobby tires, etc. The show car flaunts an aggressive face with ultra-slim, angular headlights, an athletic side profile with oversized, protruding wheels, and a taut tail section. The finesse of a coupe is present all around, too. A long, low hood slopes down all the way to the front. The roofline, which is similarly low, swoops down to the short trunk lid. We’ll know more when Audi reveals the concept car in early 2023.

TopElectricSUV says

With some of Audi’s most futuristic technologies for drive components, in-cabin electronics, comfort features, and driver assistance systems, the Audi Landjet promises to be a groundbreaking product. Although it won’t be a sports car, this is likely to be the most exciting Audi to come out since the 2008 R8.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Rolls Royce has unveiled its first ever production EV, the 2024 Spectre, more than 120 years after founder Charles Rolls first mooted the idea of an electric Roller.

The Spectre is a luxury coupe that will be priced somewhere between the $350k Cullinan SUV and $460k Phantom limo , though we won’t know exact prices until closer to the tail end of 2023 when the first cars are scheduled to arrive with their owners.

Riding on a generous 126.4-in (3,210 mm) wheelbase and weighing in at a mammoth 6,559 lbs (2,975 kg), the Spectre is built around an aluminium spaceframe that integrates the giant battery to help make the coupe 30 percent stiffer than any previous Rolls Royce . The company is being particularly tight-lipped about the technical spec, including the size of the battery pack, but given that the batteries alone weight 1,543 lbs (700 kg) and manage to give the Spectre a 320-mile (520 km) WLTP electric range despite its girth, we can presume they’re well over 100 kWh.

We’re not told the powertrain configuration either, only that the peak output is a relatively modest 577 hp (585 PS / 430 kW), and that its 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque is excepted to send the luxury coupe to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.5.

That’s probably ample performance anyway for a car that’s built for cruising around Nice, and St Tropez, and not hooning around the mountain roads behind them. Rolls says that that area in the south of France was where it finalised the Sepctre’s “magic carpet ride,” which is down to the Planar suspension system that decouples the anti-roll bars to prevent roll-rock on uneven surfaces in a straight line. The roll bars can then be brought back into play on the approach to a corner, while adaptive dampers and four-wheel steering are also part of the chassis package.

Familiar Looks

Visually, the Spectre draws some inspiration from older two-door Rolls cars like the Wraith and Phantom coupe, but looks wider and lower than either. That’s partly down to the low profile grille, the widest ever fitted to a Rolls (and one illuminated by 22 LEDs), and the fashionable split headlight arrangement. Much like ones on parent company BMW’s most expensive cars , the Rolls Royce’s real headlights are located in a recess below a pair of super-slim LED DRLs.

Even the legendary Spirit of Ecstasy mascot was aero tuned to create a more sporty looking kind of Rolls, while the fastback shape takes cues from luxury boats. And the Spectre rolls on 23-inch rims – the first time a Rolls Royce has had wheels that big in almost 100 years!

Inside, the dashboard architecture looks similar to what you’ll find in other Rolls Royce cars, but features a digital display on the passenger side, while the famous starlight headliner now extends to the doors.

2023 BMW X7: 203.3 inches

The original BMW X5 was a groundbreaking model, changing how we thought of luxury SUVs. It also put BMW on the map with consumers who wanted a luxury family hauler. Nonetheless, the modern X7 has changed all that with one of the longest wheelbases on the market (via Current Retail ).

The interior is quite luxurious with plenty of creature comforts for the price. Likewise, the design of the SUV is attractive with the trademark BMW grill on it.

Everrati believes its electric Land Rover Defender conversion could be the perfect accessory for a super yacht.

Ahead of the 2023 Monaco yacht show, the U.K. EV conversion company unveiled the Land Rover Defender "Shore Tender," a vehicle designed to give yacht owners a land-based mode of transportation at their ports of call without the need for gas or diesel. The electric Land Rover is designed to be stowed onboard a yacht, unloaded, and driven around while the yacht is docked.

In addition to being designed with yacht stowage in mind, the Shore Tender features appropriately nautical touches like a sailcloth roof awning, capstans, and floor panels made from plastic recovered from the ocean. It also features removable doors, a built-in champagne chiller, and picnic baskets. Customers can also choose paint colors to match their yachts, and Everrati will include custom sailcloth duffel bags embroidered with the name of the yacht and any logos the customer might want to add.

Everrati announced its Land Rover Defender EV conversion late last year, but still hasn't provided detailed specifications. It also hasn't confirmed pricing for the Shore Tender, but the standard Defender conversion starts at 185,000 British pounds ($223,228 at current exchange rates). The company also offers first-generation Range Rover and Land Rover Series IIA conversions.

Founded in 2019, Everrati started out with electric conversions of the 964-generation Porsche 911 . It's since expanded its portfolio to include not only classic Land Rovers, but also Ford GT40 replicas and the W113 Mercedes-Benz SL "Pagoda."

Other companies have been offering electric Defender conversions as well. Electrogenic , another U.K. firm, announced a drop-in electric conversion kit in 2022. This was aimed more at work vehicles than toys of the wealthy. There's also North Carolina's Raglan which builds a 600-hp Defender EV using Tesla components .

Luxury EV conversion company announces electric Land Rover Defender for superyacht owners

Have a yacht you'll want one ... or two ... of these plush electric defenders.

land yacht electric suv

Though many Land Rover models don’t bother hiding their ultra-luxury roots, the Defender has at least tried to maintain a sense of ruggedness and adventure. That’s changing, albeit unofficially, as a company called Everrati recently announced a new electric Defender designed to transport superyacht owners from their hulking vessels to onshore destinations.

Called the Shore Tender, the electrified off-roader is based on the classic SUV platform and features a sailcloth cover, floor panels made from recycled ocean plastic, and removable doors. Buyers can option the vehicle with a champagne chiller, picnic hampers, and towel storage, and Everrati said that many buyers choose to purchase the SUV in pairs and noted that the hand-built electric powertrain is constructed to OEM-level standards.

land yacht electric suv

While it’s designed primarily for lazy oceanside outings , the Shore Tender gets advanced charging capabilities, including DC fast charging. Buyers get custom sailcloth duffel bags embroidered with their yachts’ names and can customize the Shore Tender’s paint job to match their floating fortresses.

Of course, yacht owners need to move their electric toys from one port to another, and the Shore Tender is designed to work with the limited storage areas some of today’s largest vessels offer. It’s unclear how much the vehicle weighs, but it’s likely much lighter than normal road-going EVs to account for storage needs.

Everrati hasn’t disclosed the Shore Tender’s cost, but it likely won’t come cheap, given the target audience. People who can afford multi-million-dollar yachts probably won’t care. Plus, the Shore Tender gives them a reason to feel good about the environment, considering that their yachts are among the most polluting modes of transportation around.

land yacht electric suv

The Shore Tender will get a full reveal at the Monaco Yacht Show (where else?) on September 27, but no release date was given. The company is based in the UK, restoring classic cars with electric powertrains. Its conversions include a Porsche 911 ST and other Land Rover models, and Everrati has plans to expand to the United States to meet growing demand.

When the Toyota Prius was first introduced to the United States back in 2000 (and to Japan earlier in 1997), it set the stage for a distant future tsunami of hybrid models.  However, early hybrid models were aimed at meeting fleet fuel economy standards, and were often billed as “compliance cars,” requiring state or federal incentives and long-term ownership for buyers to recoup the higher cost of the electrified powertrain.  To make matters worse, these early hybrids were typically hatchbacks, such as the original or current Honda Insight which,  until recently , were at the bottom end of U.S. consumer preferences, regardless of their global appeal.  The shift from hybrid powertrain to electric vehicles generally followed the same narrow approach, with Chevrolet’s Bolt and Nissan’s Leaf adopting the same hatchback configuration as the early hybrid entrants.

That’s not to say that all early attempts fell into the hatchback category.  In fact, in 2008 GM introduced a mild  hybrid version of its full-size truck-based SUVs .  However, the high purchase price of the hybrid variant at the same time as the U.S. hit its recession  deterred consumers  from purchasing the vehicles.  While the 21 mpg overall rating was impressive for a vehicle of its size, it was a far cry from the comparable Prius and those who could stomach the asking price were less concerned with fuel costs as they plummeted in the wake of the recession.

However, GM may have been in the right place at the wrong time.  Trucks and SUVs are growing in market share, reaching 63% of U.S. sales in 2017, corresponding with a continuous drop in sales of sedans.  In fact, SUVs alone are projected to make up  at least 50%  of the U.S. market by 2020.  In the meantime, transaction prices are up between  39-51%  between cars and SUVs sharing the same platforms, indicating that profit margins continue to rise for SUVs over their sedan counterparts.  Ford has clearly taken note of this trend by announcing tit is  pulling out  of the sedan market.

The German manufacturers have finally taken note of this trend and have aimed to exploit the higher profit margins of SUVs to help dull the costs of electrification.  For example, Mercedes Benz with its EQC, Audi with its E-tron Quattro, and BMW with its iX3, have all  targeted the electric SUV market  with their offerings.  Similarly, Chinese manufacturer,  Byton  has taken the same approach, and we expect more electric SUVs entrants to challenge Tesla’s Model X.  On the non-all-electric front, Volvo’s XC90 and BMW’s X5 also come in powerful hybrid powertrains, which use performance as a vice to draw in buyers.  Others, such a Ford, aim to highlight technology’s versatility to move higher-priced electrified powertrains.  In 2020, Ford expects to introduce a version of its popular F-150 with a hybrid powertrains that  doubles as a power supply  or a generator for operating tools or camping equipment.

In all of these cases, the higher profit margins of trucks and SUVs provide the desired cushion necessary to absorb the extra cost of the electrification technology, hopefully enabling manufacturers to start regularly selling electric or electrified vehicles at a profit rather than a rumored loss, as in many of today’s market entrants.  Even Porsche is taking aim at the market with its all-electric Taycan.  While the Taycan takes the form of a sedan rather than as an SUV, Porsche, with its luxury manufacturer built-in higher profit margins, is attempting to prove that any vehicle can be a profited electrified vehicle if it falls in a high-margin industry segment.  The history of hybrids in the United States may be a cautionary tale that automakers are finally starting to appreciate.  The future release of electric or electrified SUVs will hopefully serve as a barometer to the mass adoption of these vehicles by other manufacturers outside of the three prominent German marques.

An all-electric Range Rover Sport EV is coming to rival Porsche’s best-selling Cayenne

Avatar for Peter Johnson

An all-electric version of the popular Range Rover Sport is set to debut later this year. The Range Rover Sport EV will look very much like its gas-powered predecessor as a legitimate rival to Porsche’s best-selling Cayenne SUV.

Range Rover preps first all-electric SUV

If you’re shopping for a high-end SUV, Range Rover and Porsche are two of the top names that often come to mind.

Coming off its highest quarterly profit since 2017 in Q4, Jaguar Land Rover said it continues to see strong demand for its premium models. JLR’s Range Rover brand achieved record quarterly wholesale figures.

The highest-spec Range Rover SV, with an average price of $260,000 (£202,000), has already surpassed last year’s sales through the first three months of 2024 (3,637 vs 1,909).

Meanwhile, the Range Rover brand is preparing to launch its first all-electric vehicle. The company said the first Range Rover EV is “generating strong interest,” with over 16,000 potential buyers on the waitlist.

The “most refined Range Rover ever created,” according to JLR, is hitting the streets for testing ahead of the electric SUV’s official debut later this year.

JLR said last month that electric Range Rover prototypes are being tested on the road, while a medium-size SUV prototype is in development.

Range Rover Sport EV set to debut this year

In addition to the electric SUV, a smaller Range Rover Sport EV is expected to be revealed later this year.

Although JLR’s initial plans, revealed in 2021, called for six all-electric models across the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender brands by 2026, the company recently pushed back its target.

After reporting Q3 2023 earnings, the company said it aimed to launch four EVs over the next two years. CEO Adrian Mardell admitted, “We are a little bit slower than we said three years ago.”

Range-Rover-Sport-EV

Madell recently told reporters that the delay is to ensure new EVs hit the market without any hiccups.

“We talked about six Land Rovers by 2026. The reality is we’re likely to have six JLR products by 2026,” Mardell explained.

The six EVs include the electric Range Rover and Sport EV versions. Both will be based on JLR’s MLA platform, which powers the current gas-powered models.

Range-Rover-Discovery-Jaguar-EV

Two smaller electric SUVs are due out, expected to be EV versions of the Range Rover Evoque and Velar models. The other two EVs due out by 2026 will be Jaguar. JLR confirmed the transformation at its plants is “on pace” for EV production.

The electric Range Rover and Sport EV models will be built at its Solihull, UK, plant, where a new $77,000 (£60 million) EV underbody line is being installed.

JLR’s new body shop in Halewood is “near completion” for the upcoming smaller EVs built on the EMA platform.

Range Rover Electric

The Defender Sport is set for an electric replacement, while a new mini Defender EV is also expected to launch over the next few years.

Range Rover’s upcoming EV features new active road noise cancellation tech for an upgraded cabin experience that’s nearly silent. It will also include towing, wading, and all-terrain features that will “surpass any other luxury electric SUV.”

Range Rover said its first all-electric SUV will be able to plow through up to 850 mm (33.5″) of water. That tops the massive GMC Hummer EV at 32″.

Everrati’s Electric Land Rover Project Lands in the U.S.

The defender , emblematic of land rover, stirs buzz with its electric restoration.

L and Rover is known as a leading contender in the premium SUV market . Originally, Land Rover was a brand that produced affordable and practical cars. Its current premium image was established with the success of its premium lineup, the Range Rover . Therefore, when discussing Land Rover’s true identity, this particular model is always mentioned. The Defender, a traditional SUV, has been the embodiment of Land Rover since its establishment in 1948.

The Defender’s original model name is Land Rover. This means that the vehicle existed before Land Rover became a branded name. In other words, the Defender can be considered the embodiment of Land Rover. Before being named the Defender, models are now called classic Land Rovers. Recently, a British car restoration company announced it had electrified this classic Land Rover, creating a global buzz.

UK Restoration Company Everrati Converts Classic Land Rover into Electric Vehicle

The British restoration company Everrati, a car restoration and electronics specialist, undertook the electrification of the classic Land Rover. Everrati recently unveiled the results of converting a 1971 model improved from the Series 2 to the 2A model into an electric vehicle. The vehicle is part of a project to enter the US market, specifically targeting American consumers.

Let’s take a closer look at the released images. Everrati explained that they completely disassembled the vehicle during production and restored it to a condition almost identical to a new car. They also presented some changes. The exterior paint color was applied in beige, and the front steel bumper was given a visual texture to mimic marble.

The interior seats, dashboard, steering wheel, and transmission were restored to maintain the Land Rover’s classic aura, while the soft top, which serves as the roof, was completely replaced with a new one.

Engine Replaced with Electric Motor, Achieving a Driving Range of 150 Miles

The original engine was removed, and the vehicle was restored to an electric version. Instead, the space was filled with an electric motor delivering a maximum output of 150 horsepower and maximum torque of 30.6kgf.m. Although not outstanding in performance numbers, it represents a significant improvement over the original model’s capabilities.

This vehicle’s unique feature is its ability to freely switch between 2WD and 4WD depending on driving conditions. What about the most important component of an electric car, the battery? The installed battery has a capacity of 60kWh, allowing a maximum driving range of 150 miles on a single charge. In an era where electric vehicles with driving ranges of 250 and 300 miles are flooding the market, barely reaching 150 miles is disappointing.

Everrati to Commence Classic Land Rover Restoration Business in the U.S. Market

Everrati has previously electrified classic Porsche 911s and Mercedes-Benz SLS. They announced plans to formally proceed with the classic Land Rover restoration business, starting with the delivery of the first restored classic Land Rover to a customer in the US, marking the beginning of their market entry.

As an aside, Craig, the buyer of the first restored classic Land Rover, said, “This vehicle is a work of art from both a design and engineering perspective. It’s an honor to be the first in America to purchase and own a classic Land Rover.

Moscow to buy another 500 electric buses in 2022

land yacht electric suv

  • Electric buses

The Moscow city government plans to procure another 500 electric buses in 2022, according to Mosgortrans, who operates buses and trams in the Russian capital. Moscow already runs 1,000 electric buses, and the city targets having a 100% electric bus fleet by 2030.

Mosgortrans says the 1,000 electric buses currently running on 66 routes in Moscow comprise one of the largest zero-emission fleets in Europe and America. “In December, Moscow has received the 1000th electric bus assembled by the Russian manufacturer Kamaz,” said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport. He added that Moscow planned to purchase 500 more eco-friendly buses this year, which is slightly up from previous announcements . Mosgortrans initially scheduled 420 vehicles.

For the new 500 buses for 2022, the city government said it would use funds from green bonds. The latter is a fixed-income instrument, i.e. a bond issued by the government in this case, which provides investors with a return in the form of fixed periodic payments and the eventual return of principal at maturity. Mosgortrans says the green bonds in Russia were specifically earmarked to raise money for climate and environmental projects. The surface public transport operator added that nearly half of the Moscow electric bus fleet have been financed by green bonds.

“Nowadays, green bonds are in high demand in Russia. All funds from this project will be used to purchase electric buses and the construction of new metro stations,” said Vladimir Efimov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations.

As reported , Mosgortrans aims to convert Moscow’s entire bus fleet to electric by 2030. In the nearer term, the operator will buy and take into service 2,000 electric buses and install over 500 charging stations by 2023.

At present, Mosgortrans claims the existing electric bus fleet has run 60 million kilometres and carried more than 156 million passengers. So far, there are 168 charging depots in Moscow, with another 115 to be integrated next year.

As with previous announcements, the latest release does not disclose details on pricing or the vehicle type. Until now, Mosgortrans has relied on GAZ and Kamaz for electric city buses and calls the model the “Moscow electric bus”. Kamaz has opened a dedicated electric bus plant last April , located at the Sokolniki Auto Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ), a branch of Mosgortrans in Moscow. The Kamaz plant can produce 500 electric buses a year and plans include another production building to increase annual output by 200 electric buses.

Mosgortrans claims the vehicles manufactured in SVARZ were up there with the international competition in terms of technical and operational characteristics. “And this while it is 30% cheaper than models of electric buses made by other world manufacturers, e.g. Polish and German companies.”

A collision, 2 months and $18K later, a couple is worried their insurer will raise rates

After Benjamin Vassalle hit a deer during a nighttime drive in northern Ontario in January, he and his partner knew that repairing their damaged electric vehicle would come at a cost. Yet when their insurance company sent the car to an independent garage, the vehicle stayed there untouched for weeks — because the mechanic didn't have the parts or expertise required to fix an EV. The couple had little choice but to send their car to its manufacturer, Tesla, which fixed the broken headlight and crushed bumper. Although the ensuing $18,000 bill was covered by their insurance company, the couple is now worried that their insurer will hike their premiums in the future.

U.S. announces rule aimed at expanding EV sales

"I think there's a lack of knowledge from insurance companies about [electric] cars and all the repairs that can occur when you have that type of car," Vassalle said. Electric vehicles are more costly and complicated to repair than traditional cars, experts say. And more people are buying them. For those reasons, insurance claims for EVs are on the rise in other countries — and the same might soon be true for the Canadian market, according to a new report.  A recent report by credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS assessed how a higher uptake of electric vehicles could lead to higher insurance premiums. EV sales in the U.K., Europe and U.S. have boomed since 2019, according to the report. Boosted by government incentives and investments in charging infrastructure, these drivers will be the first to bear the brunt of higher insurance premiums on EVs — and Canada could be next, the report says.

  • EV owners have to drive farther to break even, study suggests

"Insurance is a pool business, whereby you have insurance premiums from a lot of people [that] are used to pay claims for very few people," said Victor Adesanya, vice-president of insurance at Morningstar DBRS and a co-author of the report. In the U.K., for example, the average cost of EV insurance rose by 72 per cent in 2023, compared to 29 per cent for internal combustion engine vehicles, according to the Financial Times.  An increase in insurance premiums for EVs will be gradual for Canadians — mostly because the provinces regulate sharp insurance hikes — but they could be driven up by claims experience as more people transition to electric cars, Adesanya explained.  Read the full story here .

When Zahid Mahmood bought a house in Oshawa, Ont., in 2021, he hoped rental income would help him and his wife save money to pay for post-secondary education for their three children.  Mahmood said tenants moved into the house in May 2022, but they stopped paying rent a year later. In August, he and his wife gave the tenants an eviction notice and filed an application with the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) to end the tenancy due to non-payment of rent. After waiting months for a hearing, the LTB issued an order last month to terminate the tenancy. According to the order, the total unpaid rent owing exceeds $24,000. "Going through all this [caused] stress and mental torture and financial crisis as we had to pay the mortgage during this whole 10-month period," Mahmood said. He's among a group of landlords calling for changes to provincial rules to make it simpler and faster to evict tenants in cases of non-payment of rent. However, tenant advocates say changing the rules could make it easier for bad landlords to exploit the system and illegally evict tenants.  Read the full story here . With the federal government under pressure to freeze its planned increase to the carbon tax, policy experts are calling for a clear-eyed debate over the legislation and its role in the country's climate goals.  Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, along with seven premiers, have called for the scheduled April 1 hike to be scrapped, saying it will only make inflation worse. The Tories threatened a non-confidence vote against the government over the issue, which failed on Thursday. The carbon tax, also known as a price on carbon, came into effect at $20 per tonne in 2019. It has steadily climbed in the years since and is scheduled to rise from $65 per tonne to $80 on April 1. It is scheduled to go up another $15 each year until 2030, when it reaches $170 a tonne. The gradual increases are meant to act as a financial incentive for people and businesses to change their behaviour to burn less fossil fuels and transition to greener forms of energy. The tax applies to residents in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and Nunavut. Ninety per cent of the government revenues are returned to households in those provinces through a quarterly rebate program, with households receiving a quarterly payment based on family size.  Read the full explainer here . The Russian presidential vote is over and, predictably, Vladimir Putin is about to begin yet another six years in power.  But for his opponents abroad it is anything but business as usual. The absence of credible opponents on the ballot, and the imprisonment of Russia's most consequential opposition figures, had already underlined Putin's refusal to tolerate any hint of dissent at home. But the death of Alexei Navalny in prison just weeks ahead of the election was interpreted by Russians in the diaspora as a definitive sign that it is now up to them to lead the movement against Putin from the outside. "People recognize … that [this] might be a turning point," said Garry Kasparov, a one-time world chess champion and longtime political activist who now lives in the U.S. He left Russia a decade ago after realizing that pro-democracy activism at home under Putin was increasingly futile and dangerous. In an interview with CBC's  The National  in Washington ahead of the election, Kasparov said he's adamant that defeating Putin begins with Russian defeat in Ukraine.  Read the full story here .

When Robert Winters was single back in 2017, he used artificial intelligence to find more matches on Tinder . He downloaded AI software that automatically swiped on profiles and started conversations for him, leading to hundreds of dating prospects. Not long after, Tinder banned him. The program he used is far more savvy than the AI tools most people would use to find a date. Still, the 39-year-old digital design strategist from Belgium says even simple AI aids can optimize online dating. Last year, he started using AI to generate photos of himself for his dating profile. During that same period, a bunch of new AI-powered dating tools came out. They can help improve users' dating profiles, assist with texting or even go on "first dates" for people. But their release has also opened up a debate on the ethics of their use.  "There's this question of: to what extent should we be allowing people to use AI to represent themselves?" said Liesel Sharabi, a dating app researcher and Arizona State University associate professor. "When does that become deceptive, and when is it helpful?"  Read the full story here .

WASHINGTON – The Biden administration announced new automobile emissions standards Wednesday that officials called the most ambitious plan ever to cut planet-warming emissions from passenger vehicles.

The new rules relax initial tailpipe limits proposed last year but eventually get close to the same strict standards set out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Recommended Videos

The rules come as sales of electric vehicles, which are needed to meet the standards, have begun to slow. The auto industry cited lower sales growth in objecting to the EPA’s preferred standards unveiled last April as part of its ambitious plan to cut planet-warming emissions from passenger vehicles.

The EPA said that under its final rule, the industry could meet the limits if 56% of new vehicle sales are electric by 2032, along with at least 13% plug-in hybrids or other partially electric cars, as well as more efficient gasoline-powered cars that get more miles to the gallon.

That would be a huge increase over current EV sales, which rose to 7.6% of new vehicle sales last year, up from 5.8% in 2022.

The new standards will avoid more than 7 billion tons of planet-warming carbon emissions over the next three decades and provide nearly $100 billion in annual net benefits, the EPA said, including lower health care costs, fewer deaths and more than $60 billion in reduced annual costs for fuel, maintenance and repairs.

President Joe Biden, who has made fighting climate change a hallmark of his presidency , cited “historic progress” on his pledge that half of all new cars and trucks sold in the U.S. will be zero-emission by 2030.

“We’ll meet my goal for 2030 and race forward in the years ahead,'' Biden said in a statement Wednesday.

WHAT IS EPA PROPOSING?

The EPA rule applies to model years 2027 to 2032 and will significantly reduce emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases, as well as other air pollution such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter from new passenger cars, light trucks and pickups.

Transportation makes up the largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and cars and trucks account for more than half of those emissions. The EPA said the new rule will help “tackle the climate crisis” while accelerating the adoption of cleaner vehicle technologies. The agency is finalizing the rule as sales of clean vehicles, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, hit record highs last year.

The new rule slows implementation of stricter pollution standards from 2027 through 2029, after the auto industry called proposed benchmarks unworkable. The rule ramps up to nearly reach the level the EPA preferred by 2032.

“Let me be clear: Our final rule delivers the same, if not more, pollution reduction than we set out in our proposal,'' EPA Administrator Michael Regan told reporters. In addition to carbon pollution, the final standards also will reduce other serious air pollution that contributes to heart attacks, respiratory illnesses, aggravated asthma and decreased lung function, Regan said.

“Folks, these new standards are so important for public health, for American jobs, for our economy and for our planet,'' he said.

The standards are designed to be technology-neutral and performance-based, Regan said, giving car and truck manufacturers the flexibility to choose pollution-control technologies that are best suited for their customers while meeting environmental and public health goals.

WHY DID EPA CHANGE THE PROPOSED RULE?

The changes appear aimed at addressing strong industry and labor opposition to the accelerated ramp-up of EVs, along with public reluctance to fully embrace the new technology. There is also a legitimate threat of legal challenges before conservative courts.

The Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has increasingly reined in the powers of federal agencies, including the EPA, in recent years. The justices have restricted the EPA’s authority to fight air and water pollution — including a landmark 2022 ruling that limited the EPA’s authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants that contribute to global warming.

At the same time, the Democratic president needs cooperation from the auto industry and political support from auto workers, a key political voting bloc.

“U.S. workers will lead the world on autos — making clean cars and trucks, each stamped ‘Made in America,’” Biden said Wednesday. “You have my word.''

The United Auto Workers union, which has endorsed Biden, said it supports rules that benefit workers and the environment, not just the industry. The new rule protects workers who build combustion engine vehicles “while providing a path forward for automakers to implement the full range of automotive technologies to reduce emissions,” the union said.

HOW ARE THE NEW RULES BEING RECEIVED?

Generally, environmental groups have been optimistic about the new EPA plan, which is aimed at slashing emissions from a source that causes one-fifth of the nation’s carbon pollution.

David Cooke, senior vehicles analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the rule would significantly reduce vehicle pollution from current requirements. But the standards are weaker than those EPA proposed a year ago and make it unlikely that the U.S. will be able to meet its commitments under the 2015 Paris Climate Accord, which aims to keep global warming from increasing more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times , he said.

Still, the new rules over time will prevent more carbon pollution “than the entire U.S. economy coughs up in a year,″ said Manish Bapna, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. In the short term, the rules “will save drivers money at the pump and cut tailpipe pollution that endangers public health,″ he added.

“In the longer journey to confront the climate crisis, these standards take us in the right direction,″ he said.

But Dan Becker at the Center for Biological Diversity said he fears loopholes will let the industry continue to sell gas burners. He also is afraid the industry will get away with doing little during the first three years of the standards, which could be undone if former President Donald Trump is reelected.

“The bottom line is that the administration is caving to pressure from big oil, big auto and the dealers to stall progress on EVs and now allow more pollution from cars,” Becker said.

WHAT DO REPUBLICANS SAY?

Republicans criticized the new standards, saying they essentially decide for the public which vehicles they should buy. “These regulations represent yet another step toward an unrealistic transition to electric vehicles that Americans do not want and cannot afford,” said West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, called the rule a “misguided electric vehicle mandate” that will force the U.S. to rely on China and other foes for critical minerals needed for batteries.

Regan said the government isn’t requiring people to buy EVs or any other technology, adding that there are “multiple pathways companies can choose to comply″ with the rule.

“We are staying well within the confines of the law and our statutory authority by not mandating a specific technology,'' he said.

The EPA could achieve its carbon pollution goals even if sales of battery electric vehicles are as low as 30% in 2032, as long as other standards are met, he said.

U.S. electric vehicle sales grew 47% last year to a record 1.19 million as EV market share rose to 7.6%. But EV sales growth slowed toward the end of the year. In December, they rose 34%.

WHAT DOES THE CAR INDUSTRY THINK?

The Alliance for Auto Innovation, a large industry trade group, praised the EPA’s slower implementation of the standards, saying the pace of the EV transition matters as the industry moves to produce more electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to convert more traveling miles to electricity. The group had complained that the ramp-up to 67% initially proposed by the EPA was too fast for the industry to achieve. The proposal was faster than Biden’s goal of ensuring that EVs account for half of new vehicles in the U.S. by 2030 .

“Moderating the pace of EV adoption was the right call because it prioritizes more reasonable electrification targets in the next few, very critical years of the transition,” said John Bozzella, the Alliance CEO.

The adjusted emissions targets will still be a stretch for the industry to achieve, Bozzella said, but they should give the market and parts supply chains a chance to catch up to higher EV sales. The plan also gives the industry more time to set up public charging stations, and it allows government tax incentives for EV manufacturing and for consumers to buy EVs to take hold, he said.

Toyota, the top seller of hybrid vehicles in the U.S., said it believes the fastest way to reduce carbon emissions quickly is to give consumers choices of battery electric vehicles and hybrids. The new EPA standards allow for more sales of plug-in hybrids and regular gas-electric hybrids to meet emissions limits.

L-Charge’s 1st Mobile EV Charger Starts Patrolling Moscow’s Streets

  • The company will provide on-demand charging service to electric vehicles in Moscow, Russia.

L-Charge’s 1st Mobile EV Charger Starts Patrolling Moscow’s Streets

Russian engineering firm L-Charge has announced that its first mobile EV charger has started to patrol Moscow city streets to provide on-demand charging service to electric vehicles. It can be summoned via an app to any location in Moscow and takes just 8 minutes to charge an electric car to a range of 100 km, a world record, said the company.

L-Charge also plans to build 4-5 EV charging units to launch them as a mobile charger in Paris, Berlin,  New York , Amsterdam and London.

land yacht electric suv

All mobile electric car chargers available in the market today operate on power bank principle and themselves need to be recharged, stated the company. What makes the Russian invention fundamentally different is that it is a mobile mini power station which itself generates energy, stores it and enables other vehicles to recharge without needing to be connected to the grid, said L-Charge. The energy is generated from liquefied natural gas, but the option to switch to hydrogen is already in place.

The company offered this solution – a super fast mobile EV charger – at a product launch in Moscow.

“Around 90% of atmospheric pollution in Moscow is caused by vehicles, and Moscow is a leader in the development of public transport. To significantly reduce hazardous emissions, private and commercial vehicles must be switched to electricity. Natural gas is the cleanest source of renewable energy available today, and in the case of our charger, generation of energy is even 5-7% cleaner than in gas thermal power stations – in other words, it is cleaner than charging a vehicle from the grid or a socket. As a result, we can cut the level of pollution from vehicles by at least one third right now,” said Dmitry Lashin, CEO of L-Charge.

Lashin noted that given the way electric vehicles are developing today, it is simpler to address the issue of moving the chargers than to create a large number of stationary chargers across the city.

“We could continue developing the network of charging networks connected to the grid, spending a huge amount of resources, both time and money. But the problem of inadequate infrastructure can be resolved straight away by deploying a network of autonomous charging stations,” he added.

Moscow has already implemented a list of measures aimed at supporting EV development, making parking for EV’s free of charge, as well as providing free charging at public chargers. A spokesman for the Moscow Department of Transport reportedly said that Moscow is ready to support developers’ initiatives through the allocation of grants.

Together Moscow transport authorities and local business are planning to help car owners to shift to EVs in the upcoming years.
