The latest James Bond film, No Time to Die will feature the Spirit 46. The modern classic yacht brand previously showcased its Spirit 54 in Daniel Craig's first 007 movie Casino Royale

The Spirit 46 makes an appearance in the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die , which is released in cinemas at the end of the month.

The yacht is seen sailing in the Caribbean , where 007 has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica.

It is not the first time Suffolk-based Spirit Yachts has partnered on a James Bond film.

The Spirit 54 was chosen to feature in the 2006 film Casino Royale , in which James Bond and Vesper Lynd can be seen cruising into Venice onboard a Spirit 54.

Spirit Yachts CEO and Head of Design Sean McMillan commented: ‘The James Bond films are a mainstay of British culture and we are honoured to be continuing our partnership with such an iconic brand.’

Just over 14m long, the Spirit 46 has a sleek underwater profile and is sold as ideal for fast-paced racing or coastal day cruising with planning speeds of up to 18 knots.

McMillan said all Spirit yachts were inspired by the classic, elegant sailing yachts from the 1930s, and are custom-designed and built to order.

‘The Spirit 46 is one of the original Spirit Yachts designs and is an example of the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into every Spirit yacht. I think the yacht suits the Bond character very well because of the combination of beauty and practicality,’ he added.

When searching for a yacht to feature as Daniel Craig ’s transport of choice into Venice in the James Bond film Casino Royale the production company looked for a classic, British yacht oozing style and elegance. They settled on a 54 foot Spirit Yachts named ‘Spirit’.

The  Spirit 54  has been designed for customers who want to compromise speed and comfort, but who want to give priority to first quality – but who want to have enough comfort on board. In a sense, the  Spirit 54  is a development of the model  Spirit 52 but with more advanced sailing weapons. With almost the same displacement as the 52nd model, but with a noticeably larger sail area, this model is a great sailor that can please any sailing enthusiast. It is not for nothing that this yacht was chosen for James  Bond in the movie “Casino Royale”.

Handcrafted by Spirit Yachts in Suffolk, Spirit has the clean lines synonymous with Spirit Yachts’ design as well as the iconic mahogany topsides, teak decks and modern rig. Down below she has two double cabins with ensuites and a spacious living area, complete with mahogany dining table and well-equipped galley.

Following the build in Suffolk, Spirit was shipped to the Bahamas before the Spirit Yachts team sailed her to Puerto Rico and through the British Virgin Islands to Tortola Harbour, before she was shipped to Croatia and then sailed to Venice.

Sean McMillan

After being de-masted to fit under the various bridges (the rig came in and out a total of 10 times!), 54-foot Spirit was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in 300 years.

LONDON, England (SuperYachtWorld) -- It may be named after the high-octane James Bond thriller, but does the latest offering from enthusiastic owner John Staluppi hit the jackpot?

Bond style: Casino Royale is the latest in a series of 007-inspired super-yachts.

"Casino Royale" was the first action-packed novel by Ian Fleming, paving the way for 11 more spy novels, and a catalogue of iconic films charting the adventures of secret service agent James Bond.

But it is also the name of the very latest in a line of yachts owned by renowned yachtsman John A. Staluppi -- all of which have been named after one of the Bond tales.

They may well be tributes to 007, but Octopussy, Moonraker, Thunderball and The World is Not Enough are also some of the fastest super-yachts in the world. Octopussy was built in Holland and Moonraker in Norway, both from plans drawn by the innovative Dutch naval architect Frank Mulder, and Thunderball was designed and built by Dennison Yachts in Fort Lauderdale.

To build The World is Not Enough, John created Millennium Superyachts in 1998, a company that will be a vehicle for future builds.

It was the 43.5 meter Octopussy, which broke the 50-knot barrier 18 years ago, that first brought the name of New York-born John Staluppi to the attention of super-yacht aficionados.

The self-made millionaire left school when he was 16 and worked as a mechanic in Brooklyn before going on to start up one of the most successful car dealerships in North America -- a business that enabled him to indulge his passion for racing fast boats, and then later for super-yachts.

To build Casino Royale, Millennium Yachts has teamed up with the U.S.-based Christensen Shipyard, describing the new launch as the first of its "Millennium editions." Joe Foggia, president of Christensen Yachts, explains: "She has over 650 square meters of space on board -- that's a lot in a yacht of her length."

  • Special:  More about super-yachts
  • Read more:  Sailing news and features

There is no doubt that John's vision and passion bring fervor and excitement to a sometimes conservative industry. There are, after all, few super-yachts aboard which you will be greeted by frosted-glass panels sweeping down the central staircase, delicately etched with the silhouettes of Bond girls.

And then there's the hand-crafted marble roulette wheel set into the deck of the main saloon, made by master-craftsman John Homchick at Christensen's dedicated marble shop.

Casino Royale isn't a speed machine to match his previous yachts but, as we chatted on the deck of his latest creation, it's very clear that John Staluppi is an owner who knows just want he wants. "So what is a super-yacht? To me, it has to be at least 120 feet overall with a master suite and four guest cabins, room for six crew and somewhere to carry the tender.

"And oh, one more thing, there has to be no teak. It adds weight, it's a pain in the butt to clean, and the oil gets all over my carpeting!" he says with a smile.

We look around and notice the acres of teak decking -- it's stunning, so perhaps this is one fight he's better off not winning.

The yacht's interior can best be described as richly ornate, yet it remains tasteful and has the softer touch of John's wife Jeanette in many of the living areas. Atop the divide sits a figurine of Vesper Lynd, the heroine from Casino Royale.

In terms of accommodation, John has achieved the optimal use of space he was looking for. The master stateroom is accessed through the owner's study with its dark, leather-topped mahogany desk and cream leather office chair. As you may expect from a James Bond fan, a gargantuan double bed dominates with a mirrored deck head above.

Below, the guest cabins are equally well-appointed and appear to be larger than the standard on most yachts of this size. Forward are two twin cabins; astern of them two suites with king-size bunks and further aft is a stunning full-beam VIP suite.

Two decks above is the elegant sky lounge -- a party room if ever we saw one. The onyx-topped bar is seductively illuminated from within the stonework and is a perfect spot to enjoy a vodka martini or two. The lounge also has a custom-designed entertainment center and a huge cinema display with a movie library that fittingly boasts every one of Commander Bond's adventure-packed movies.

Captain Zak Matten is pleased with the work so far: "I really like the way her bow and stern thruster work together. I can get her to move just about anywhere. I can even shift her sideways when I have to.

"Her maiden voyage was up into Alaska and we encountered our fair share of lumpy seas. This U.S.-built boat can hold her head up when compared to European yachts; she is up there with the best."

She may not have the speed of her predecessors in the Staluppi stable but Casino Royale is nevertheless an impressive yacht. She will bring her owners a lot of enjoyment, and for the guests who are lucky enough to be invited on board the party is about to begin.

The best James Bond Boats and Yachts (2024 update)

spirit-f-bond-007-luxury-yacht-2

If you frequent the high seas, then you are certainly familiar with James Bond movies. After all, this iconic franchise has become synonymous with what it means to lead a life of luxury and danger. From speed boats to submarines and everywhere in between, Ian Fleming has given us some of the most memorable watercraft used by Bond himself throughout his adventures for more than 50 years now. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the best James Bond boats and yachts that have been featured in recent 007 films – both large vessels like The World Is Not Enough’ super yacht as well as small ones such as Live And Let Die’s’ hydrofoil! So fasten your seat belts and get ready to explore these larger-than-life vessels from the world’s top spy!

From Russia With Love (1963)

One of the most memorable boat chases occurs in From Russia With Love . A young Sean Connery and Tatiana Romanova were traveling to Venice when the bad guys assaulted them. But Bond made a spectacular escape aboard a Fairey Huntress .

From Russia With Love - James bond yacht

The speedboat is part of the Fairey Marine catalog. Created by English sailing enthusiasts, the company produced boats until the early 1980s. Its first motor cruiser appeared in the 1960s.

This James Bond boat sequence helps publicize the Fairey Huntress and the Fairey Huntsman motorboats. They became widely popular, and won multiple offshore races. They were the craft of choice for Royal Naval Skippers.

Live and Let Die (1973)

The Glastron GT150 featured on Live and Let Die movie poster is crucial for the 007 boat history. Roger Moore drives the speedboat through Louisiana everglades and makes a 120ft leap over the pursuing Sheriff’s cars.

Live and Let Die, James bond - Glastron GT150 yacht

26 boats were used to create this iconic sequence, and 17 were destroyed during the shoot!

The Glastron GT 150 used to establish the world record was sold just after the shooting. It is now the property of the Ian Flemming Foundation, and it was part of James Bond’s vehicle exhibition in London.

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend these kinds of stunts with speedboats while you are on sailing vacations. But you can still experience high-speed sensation and jumps with water toys. Learn how to choose among them here!

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

In this Bond movie, the boat is, in reality, a Lotus Esprit. This beautiful white car is one of the best British sports cars of the 1970s. Q turned it in an incredible vehicle. It turns into a submarine to escape an attacking helicopter.

Filmed in the Bahamas (Nassau), the underwater scenes feature the extravagant vehicle that can fire torpedoes and anti-aircraft-missiles.

Enjoy a superyacht charter in the Bahamas to immerse yourself in the James Bond movie ambiance.

Golden Eyes (1995)

The Manticore yacht is the villain’s lair seen in GoldenEye . Most of the scenes were filmed in Monaco. The actual luxury yacht is the Northern Cross , a 142ft boat built in Sweden in 1991.

Designed by Tor Hinders and Per Kavli, the motorboat has a top speed of 24 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots. The accommodation is designed to sleep up to 10 guests over five cabins.

The crew cabins accommodate up to 8 people. It was the property of a Finnish businessman before it was refurbished and sold for $7 million in 2006.

Check our Yacht available for charter in the French Riviera and cruise to Monaco to experience James Bond’s universe glamour.

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

In the longest Bond pre-title sequence, Pierce Brosnan is chasing Giulietta da Vinci’s Sunseeker Superhawk 34 .

Driven down the Thames at 60mph, the motor yacht is wiped out by mini-torpedos. The Superhawk 34 used in The World is Not Enough was for sale in January 2012 for $150,000.

After this film, the collaboration between the film producers (EON Productions) and the boat company becomes more notable.

Sunseeker is a major boat builder for the sports and leisure markets in the world. The James Bond franchise helped the British luxury brand to become an international icon.

Try our Sunseeker Superyacht for a taste of James Bond lifestyle.

Casino Royale (2006)

In the 2006 James Bond film, several luxury yachts appeared. Among them, there are the Sunseeker Predator 108 and Spirit 54.

The Sunseeker superyacht is the villain’s “floating lair.” It was filmed on location in the Bahamas. With over 100 feet long, the performance yacht has four cabins, one master suite, and it can accommodate up to eight guests.

casino royale movie yacht

Full-scale models of accommodation on board were built for the film studios in Prague.

The large-scale sets were mounted on a large hydraulic platform to simulate the movement of the sea during filming.

In 2017 the yacht was for sale at $4.2 million.

Daniel Craig and Eva Green also sail casually into Venice on the elegant Spirit 54 . This classic British 54-foot yacht was handcrafted in Suffolk by S pirit Yachts . She sleeps up to six guests in two en suite double cabins.

spirit-f-bond-007-luxury-yacht-2

It has to be shipped to Miami, then Barbados and Croatia before finally arriving in Venice. It is also the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in over 300 years.

After the shoot, the luxury boat was used for cruising and racing, mainly in the UK and Ireland.

Skyfall (2012)

In SkyFall , Daniel Craig and Severine (Bérénice Marlohe) sail on the Pruva Regina yacht gliding through Turkey’s sapphire waters.

The actual superyacht is a 183-ft schooner built in Turkey by Pruva Yachting in 2011.

casino royale movie yacht

Regina has a maximum speed of 12 knots, and she can accommodate 12 guests in two master suites, two double staterooms and two twin cabins plus nine crew.

This James Bond yacht was listed on sale in 2012 for $14 million.

Fun fact: the shower scene which is supposed to take place aboard, was filmed in room 712 of the Four Seasons Hotel at Canary Wharf in London.

No Time to Die (2021)

In No Time To Die, released in 2021, the 007 yacht is called Spirit 46. She is a very beautiful 14m sailing yacht that is initially designed for fast-pace racing. Clearly a true match for an adventurer such as James Bond.

In 2021, it seems that James Bond is going back to its old love from the Casino Royale time, the modern yet classic wooden sailing yacht.

The yachts named after James’ Bond movies

Although our article is intended to list the yachts that have been featured in a James Bond movie, you might also encounter boats that were named with one of the James Bond movies, without actually being a part of the movie.

John Staluppi is the most emblematic case of a James Bond fan that decided to show his passion through the naming of its yachts. As such, he named all of the 18 yachts that he owned over his life after James Bond movies.

Like James Bond, John Staluppi likes his yachts fast. To be more precise, he likes them unusually fast compared to their respective size.

One of his most famous posessions include yachts called :

  • For Your Eyes Only : a 36m yacht that could go over 30 Knots
  • Octopussy : a 43m yacht that can reach 50 knots
  • Moonraker : a 36m that can sail at 57 knots
  • Casino Royale : a 49m luxurious yacht
  • Skyfall : a 57m superyacht with 3 VIP suites
  • Diamonds Are Forever: a 61m motoryacht available for luxury charters

It seems that John Staluppi, like many of us, made the realisation that sailing a yacht truly makes you feel like you are part of a James Bond movie. Luckily, your yacht doesn’t have to be featured in a Hollywood movie or to bear its name for you to feel that way.

The famous Riva boats in the James Bond movies

Since the middle of last century, luxury Italian boat maker Riva has become a cornerstone in Hollywood blockbusters. From classic runabouts to modern variations with wooden cladding and impressive technical characteristics, their boats have been featured alongside stars like Clark Gable and Chris Hemsworth – all encapsulating style, wealth and status on screen.

Riva boats have been making a splash in the Bond films since Robert Moore first took up the mantle of 007. In 1995, Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond for “Golden Eye” and with him came Riva ! Daniel Craig later paraded around on one too when he stepped into his version of Agent 007’s shoes in “Casino Royale”. Over time these beautiful vintage yachts continue to gain more admiration from film-lovers everywhere; even now with many new movies about our beloved secret agent coming out each year – so does their presence remain over all that time.

Bond and Vesper sailing into Venice with a Spirit 54 yacht in Casino Royale

In the movie Casino Royale  (2006), James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) sail from Montenegro to Venice in style: a brand new Spirit 54 sailing yacht, made by Spirit Yachts.

Bond casually steers this majestic and luxurious ship throught the canals, while Vesper is enjoying the view and taking pictures with her Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T50 Digital Camera.

James Bond is wearing a grey Sunspel t-shirt and Persol sunglasses .

The Spirit 54 is seen once more at the end of the movie when Bond, sitting on the deck, speaks on the phone to 'M'. Then he is wearing a black cardigan, white Sunspel v-neck shirt  and khaki chinos.

After being de-masted to fit under the various bridges (the rig came in and out a total of 10 times!), 54-foot Spirit was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in 300 years.

I fear the somewhat onanistic Mr Tadler below is pulling several legs as well as himeslf with his self-pleasuring tales (focused about unlikely sourcing of prime James Bond Ephemera.) You would not get your hairy hand on a Spirit 54 for love nor indeed, a lot of money as a charter or hire boat - rather you need 550 Grand in a numbered Swiss account or, to have performed a valuable service for MI6 and her Brittanic majesty - Doubtful for such a shameless, self - proclaimed (if not eloquent and ambitious) tosser in either case.

Sunseeker and Spirit Yachts craft some beautiful vessels but it's unfortunate that movie, The Island, yanked the rights to use Wallypower vessels, specifically the Wallypower 118. My god that 118 gave me goosebumps when I looked it up and found it's not just some movie prop and it's actually in production.

When the completed version of the film was submitted for classification, reductions to the torture sequence had been made, including the removal of lingering shots of the rope, close shots of Bond's facial reaction and the substitution of a more distant shot of the beating. Share All sharing options for: Casino Royale’s poker scene was as elaborate as a James Bond stunt

The script for Casino Royale worried director Martin Campbell. This was his second reboot of the James Bond franchise , and on the cusp of production, he realized the movie’s centerpiece — a showdown between 007 and the blood-eyed villain Le Chiffre — took place around a quiet poker table. Loosely adapting Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel of the same name, screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis had replaced the author’s original game of baccarat with three big rounds of Texas hold’em . The card game, they believed, made for better drama — it was known more widely, required more skill and delivered higher stakes. But for Campbell, who had never picked up a deck, it looked like a snooze.

“There was a lot of [card] playing in it,” he tells Polygon. “It was the thing I sweated on more than anything else.”

In 1995, Campbell introduced Pierce Brosnan as Bond with Goldeneye , which moved on from Timothy Dalton’s gritty take into a more fantastical realm. Over the next three movies, the stories became excessively kitschy. By the time Brosnan finished 2002’s Die Another Day , driving invisible cars through ice palaces, Bond producers knew the franchise had shifted into self-parody. “They wanted to bring it back to earth,” Campbell says. “When I came on board, I felt the same way. I felt the whole thing needed to have its feet well and truly on the ground.”

That meant a contemporary action movie — tougher, grimmer, less reliant on CGI, and more devoted to realism. When Daniel Craig signed on to embody the new direction, he embraced the idea of portraying a vulnerable hero. His Bond was brazen, reckless, emotionally-charged. He made mistakes, but looked good (if occasionally bruised) making them. It was the perfect kind of character to get involved in a high-tension poker game. Still, Campbell thought, how would he animate this green-felted drama?

“It was difficult to think how you keep the audience engaged in those card games,” the movie’s editor Stuart Baird says. “Everybody was terribly worried that people would be bored with it.”

Campbell cracked it. The roughly 30-minute casino sequence plays as a masterful microcosm of the movie — it has its own narrative arc, interspersed with punctuations of combat and death-defying shocks, and shows off Bond’s mental prowess and mortality. More importantly, it proved Craig capable of daredevil thrills and martini-sipping refinement, and leveraged his skills into one of the best depictions of poker in movie history. “I think the sequence was pretty convincing,” Campbell says. “What you realize is, it’s not just the card games — it’s the stakes. It’s also two guys eye-fucking one another, basically. That was the secret.”

Pulling it off, however, took weeks of research, tight editing and, crucially, a devotion to poker authenticity.

a close up of a hand holding a poker chip in Casino Royale

Before he began shooting Casino Royale in Prague, Campbell devoured gambling classics like The Cincinnati Kid and 5 Card Stud . He had to understand the game on a molecular level and leaned on veteran producer Michael G. Wilson, who also served as an informal poker consultant, to teach him the ins and outs.

Then there was the tactical filming strategy. Baird, who had edited Richard Donner’s 1994 western comedy Maverick, had a few tips. While on that movie’s set, Baird remembered the way Donner had chosen to shoot Mel Gibson and how he built tension for the movie’s climactic scene. “He said shoot everything you can possibly think of, especially eyes, looks, close-ups,” Baird recalls. “I told Martin to do the same: just shoot the hell out of everything that you possibly can.”

Baird’s suggestion fit Campbell’s action-oriented background seamlessly. In one of the movie’s propulsive opening scenes, Bond chases a bomb-maker throughout a construction site in Madagascar. It’s a mesmerizing parkour pursuit, and Campbell captures the pair’s daredevilish, aerial gymnastics from every angle. “He’s a bull in the china shop,” Campbell says of Bond. “He just hurls himself no matter what the dangers are, he’s not really thinking.” The kinetic filmmaking — the quick cutting and numerous perspectives — along with 007’s impulsive style gave the director a blueprint for bringing the staid poker scenes to similar life.

To achieve the subtleties of the game, the production enlisted Tom Sambrook as a formal poker consultant. While at drama school in his 20s, he’d started playing poker religiously, eventually becoming a professional at the Victoria Casino in London. In 2002, he won the European Poker Championship, and over the next three years, as the game migrated online, Sambrook made a living beating novices on the internet. Then, in 2005, a brief came through his actors’ agency asking for someone to help direct a poker tournament in Europe. “It wasn’t really clear what it was,” Sambrook says. “I went up for it, and only then, when they shipped me out to Prague, where I met Michael Wilson, did I realize it was a Bond gig.”

James Bond and his fellow players sit at the poker table in Casino Royale

As Campbell and his crew built and prepared their makeshift casino, a set that would give the director space to put the camera anywhere he’d like, Sambrook began training multiple actors (some for the main tournament, others for the movie’s earlier games) to transform them into legit-looking players. He set up small tables and played multiple hands, instructing throughout the process. “I would get them for 15-20 minutes in a room in a basement at Barrandov [Studios], where they’d set up a poker table,” he says. “I’d just basically tell them what the absolute bare minimum was that they needed to know to look like they had been playing this game.”

Fundamentally, Sambrook explains, veteran poker players operate with an absolute economy — they handle their cards, stack their chips and move their eyes in small, efficient manners. With such a big pot on the line, displaying those subtle virtues was critical. “There’s none of these grand movements, nothing extravagant,” Sambrook says. “It looks weird if you arrive at the poker table with loads of attitude but not much going on behind it.” He impressed upon actors to lose clichés and replace them with a genuine decision-making process. He lectured them about the aerodynamics of tossing chips and the importance of keeping cards flat on the table. Effectively, all the “stuff that sticks out like a sore thumb if you don’t [play a lot],” he says.

To get the crew involved, Wilson also staked a friendly game during the production’s off-hours to teach the rules and regulations. Some cast members even went to casinos in Prague to watch the natural flow of professionals. “I’m a Scotch Presbyterian — I hate gambling,” Baird admits. “I think Daniel Craig won [our game]. I lost after about 15 minutes.” Adding another layer of authenticity to the movie, Campbell cast Andreas Daniel, an Austrian casino inspector who “could do all the tricks,” to be the movie’s official dealer. “I really was lucky,” Daniel says. “My experience as a dealer helped a lot.”

By the time shooting began in Karlovy Vary, the cast — including Mads Mikkelsen and Jeffrey Wright — had become addicted to poker. “We’d be playing games constantly between takes,” Sambrook laughs. “It got confusing, because I’d been trying to deal three or four different games with different people in it, and keep track of their stacks, and I’m trying to remember whose stack is whose.” Though Sambrook had taught Mikkelsen to twirl chips around his finger and look like a professional, the Danish actor and his peers couldn’t hide their amateurish skills. “They’re paid good per diems,” Sambrook says. “I saw it as their privilege to learn by paying me this money.”

The aesthetic goal, of course, had been achieved. For the next nine days, Campbell had a cast of professional-looking poker players — not to mention dealers, bankers and observers — at his disposal. “I thought they were very convincing,” Campbell says, before acknowledging the challenge of shooting it all. “It was [going to be] a mathematical exercise.”

Le Chiffre holds a finger against his scarred eye in Casino Royale

Although Casino Royale set up shop in Prague, the actual poker sequence occurs at a Montenegro hotel. Inside, Bond has been staked by MI6 to play in an international hold’em-style poker game hosted by Mikkelsen’s LeChiffre. The movie’s villain hopes the 10-person, $130 million game will recoup his recent financial losses and appease his angry clients, believed to be global terrorists. Though Bond’s participation means potentially funding criminals, he’s Britain’s best shot to bankrupt LeChiffre and end his underground transactions.

Ultimately, only three hands matter in Casino Royale , and they all feature showdowns between Bond and LeChiffre, providing a three-act structure to the heart of the movie. The first watches Bond muck his cards and intentionally lose to discover LeChiffre’s tell; the second watches LeChiffre dupe Bond and eliminate him from the table with quad jacks; and the third watches Bond return to the tournament to redeem himself with a straight flush. In between, Bond spends a drink break by suffocating two assassins in a stairwell and, at a later intermission, survives a poisoned drink after Vesper (Eva Green), his British accomplice, defibrillates him with his life hanging in the balance.

“This is sort of Bond before he becomes Bond, thinking with his heart instead of his head,” Campbell says. “From a dramatic point of view, each of the card games has a good climax [...] The point was you would never play it as one long, single game ... I think it would have tested the audience’s patience.”

To capture the intensity of each hand, Campbell followed Baird’s early advice. He and his assistant director mapped out camera placements hours before action was called, eventually grabbing numerous angles and reactions in master shots and close-ups. “You’re changing the variety so you maintain the interest from an audience point of view,” Baird says. Campbell also had to be aware of continuity, and used crew members to fill in for players between takes so he could determine his next shot. “When I called cut, you would have to go back to a certain point, and everybody’s chips had to be put back, all the cards had to be relayed,” he says. With so many players and cross-cuts, he made it a priority to establish the geography of the table. “It’s a film-school exercise to put 10 people around a table all looking at one another, giving a lesson in eye-lines and the way they’re reacting to one another. You just slog through it.”

Baird watched the dailies on set and cut together the scenes in real time, making sure the poker kept a swift rhythm. As a way to narrate and explain the game, Mathis (Giancarlo Giannini), Bond’s contact, watches with Vesper from afar and explains the hands, the odds and the motivations of each player. For those unfamiliar with the game and the implications of a bet, check or call, his commentary became a useful guide. “You have to get shots of observers watching them, particularly Vesper and Mathis,” says Campbell, applauding Baird’s economic choices. “You really have to have the material to be able to control the pace of the edit.”

From the script alone, Sambrook knew that Purvis, Wade and Haggis had “clearly played poker” and that the cards built the drama effectively. But the characters’ betting strategy, specifically when LeChiffre eliminates Bond from the table, had flaws. In the original script, Bond moves all-in once he sees LeChiffre’s tell. In actuality, Sambrook recognized, Bond would have teased his opponent until the last bet, trying to coax more chips, if he really thought he was bluffing. “That had to change,” Sambrook says. “I put in [the script] that Bond does the teaser re-raise, inducing the big all-in. It took maybe six weeks to get that up to Martin Campbell [...] I said, ‘You’ve got to read this,’ because most people won’t know or care, but there will be hardcore poker players that will just say, ‘They’ve done it again. Why can’t they get this stuff right?’”

In the game’s final hand, four competitors remain. After numerous checks around the table, the dealer places down a river card, providing a variety of flush and full-house opportunities. Two opponents go all-in, and after a long stare-down with LeChiffre, “the Mexican standoff,” Campbell suggests, Bond risks his entire chip pile, too. The villain has the best full-house combination, and takes a chance on his odds, pushing his stack into the middle of the table. After each player reveals his cards, Bond pauses dramatically and then flips over a five and seven of spades, completing an unlikely straight flush and winning the tournament.

The victory is emblematic of the new Bond — he’s not flashy or obvious. “He wins with an inconspicuous straight flush, rather than the royal flush,” Sambrook says. Over the nearly 15 years since the movie’s release, the improbability of each player’s decision to risk everything has been debated over Reddit and by other poker players . But Sambrook, who advised Campbell on the sequencing of bets and bluffs, stands by the improbable scenario as a highly enjoyable cinematic pay-off.

“It’s not representative of an average hand. But the thing about hold’em is it does create these factories of madness,” the poker consultant says. “That’s why I love the game. It creates this very close, explosive situation. Once you’ve got a board with cards that close together, everyone’s thinking about the house, everyone’s thinking about the flush, everyone’s thinking about the straight. And in there is the sick feeling, Christ, does one of these guys have a straight flush? ”

Campbell does concede one error at the end of the sequence. Before Bond leaves the table, he slides a plastic chip worth $500,000 over to the dealer as a courtesy tip. It’s a seemingly nice gesture, but the chip isn’t worth anything outside the game’s context. “I always laugh at the end when Bond just flips him half a million,” Campbell says. “It was just amusing to me — it’s not Bond’s money.”

Bond, sweating like a monster, sits opposite Le Chiffre at the poker table in Casino Royale

Midway through shooting the poker sequence, Campbell knocked out the game room’s wall and wheeled in a crane. Unsure if he needed to convey big sweeping transitions into the movie to indicate the passage of time, the director set up a time-lapse camera above the table. But after looking at the footage, Baird knew it would eliminate the movie’s spark. “It would have been really boring if we had done all those dissolves,” he says. “That’s not interesting.”

The director agreed, instead relying on his most valuable asset to carry the audience to its high-rolling finale: The witty banter, volatile interruptions, and contemplative pauses of Daniel Craig. Initially second-guessed and criticized by dubious Bond fans when he signed onto the production, Craig redefined the role by exposing its humanity. On the brink of death multiple times, he wears his bruises and blood stains like a badge of honor, and then dispenses his brutality at the table, sliding into a smooth-talking, card-playing competitor to match Mikkelsen’s commanding presence.

It’s a complex transition required for such an impenetrable, legendary character, and Craig showcases his deft ability, quite literally, in spades. “He looked like a guy who had been in the special forces rather than the commander of a boat,” Baird says. “And that ruggedness, that sense of edginess, and lack of comfort — he carried them off very well.”

As a consequence, the game itself — its authenticity and attention to detail — instantly elevated Casino Royale into poker movie canon. Though primarily an action director, Campbell treated the material with a seriousness and sophistication that set the tone for the rest of the Craig era. He made poker accessible and, in effect, riveting, helping the movie earn $606 million at the global box office. “I think it’s a combination of everything,” Campbell says. “We achieved what we set out to do, which was reboot the franchise into a much more contemporary, more realistic way.”

As Sambrook can attest, the movie’s 2006 release also capitalized on poker’s soaring, televised popularity at the time. It didn’t take long for experts to saturate online games, a consequence that pushed him back into academics. Still, he’ll always be appreciative of his experience playing with Craig and Mikkelsen and making extra scratch from his other temporary apprentices — one of whom, the British actor Ade, shared his flight home, eager to keep his rare poker experience alive just a little longer.

“I played my last game literally as the wheels of the plane hit the tarmac in Heathrow,” Sambrook says. “I won with King-high, it was just fantastic.”

50m Christensen motor yacht Casino Royale sold and renamed

The 49.7 metre Casino Royale has been sold with RJC Yacht Sales' Bob Cury representing the buyer and Northrop & Johnson the seller.

Casino Royale was built by American shipyard Christensen in 2008 for American yachting legend John Staluppi. She is ABS classed and was last refitted in 2018.

Casino Royale can comfortably accommodate 15 guests in six cabins and has a crew of 10. Her master, located on the main deck, is furnished with a king and an extra large Jacuzzi. The full-beam VIP stateroom is also equipped with a king and a Jacuzzi, while her four additional guest staterooms, two twins and two doubles, all have en suite bathrooms.

High gloss Sapele mahogany can be found throughout. A full-beam sky lounge with state-of-the-art entertainment and gaming amenities provides for those with a penchant for socializing and relaxing with friends and family.

For water sports enthusiasts, she has a large garage that can hold myriad toys. A sundeck Jacuzzi provides the perfect spot for guests to relax day or night, with a wet bar providing comfortable seating for ten. A lift provides access to all four decks, including the sundeck.

Twin 2,039hp MTU diesel engines give her a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 17.5 knots. The vessel will be renamed Lady Elaine and offered for charter.

Casino Royale was asking $26,900,000.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
