Cruisers 46 Cantius

The Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius may not be the biggest Cantius model that the Wisconsin shipyard produces, but she’s full of surprises, sharing enough attributes with her bigger sisters— including the 60-foot Cantius flagship —that she’s able to deliver relaxation on multiple levels.

All the way aft, there’s a hydraulic swim platform with integrated steps that extend as the platform descends, creating a beach (or tender stowage). The transom has an electric grill and fridge, making it easy for the cook to dish freshly grilled fish up to the cockpit, which has seating for six to eight people on an L-shaped settee around a wooden table. The forward corners of the cockpit have flattop cabinets, with a Vitrifrigo fridge in one and an ice maker in the other. Stowage and cup holders fill out the cabinets.

The cockpit door has three glass panels, and the center panel opens to the salon. Or slide the center and starboard panels to port, and the aft deck and salon blend with an opening measuring 5 feet, 5 inches wide.

Step inside, and the galley is ready to serve those fore and aft. To port is an L-shaped countertop with a recessed two-burner Kenyon cooktop, a circular sink, a built-in Muave microwave, and drawers and cabinets. To starboard is an undercounter Nova Kool fridge/freezer. Keeping the appliances at counter height helps the salon to feel open with unobstructed sightlines from stem to stern.

Cruisers 46 Cantius galley

The salon’s 32-inch TV is mounted on a swivel, turning 180 degrees and making it viewable from the salon or the aft deck seating. Mood-setting and other controls are near the TV, including light switches, a stereo, air conditioning, and 110-volt and USB outlets. Amidships, a double settee is to starboard and a dinette is to port on a raised platform, making it a great spot for outdoor views (while adding headroom to the belowdecks accommodations). The dinette’s settee measures almost 6 feet long and converts to a berth.

There’s 6-foot-7-inch headroom throughout the main deck, along with opening side windows that bring the outdoors indoors. The helm is to starboard with twin 12-inch Garmin multifunction displays . Low-profile rocker switches are on the console, with throttles, a joystick, tab controls and a Garmin display controller in the arm console. There’s a Rockford Fosgate wired-remote digital-media receiver for audio inputs. A cellphone charging pad is to port. Cruisers mounts the compass right in front of the leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, as opposed to atop the dash. The helm seat is double wide with a bolster and footrest. A 9-foot-wide single-pane windshield means wide-open visibility forward, and a retractable sunroof is overhead.

For machinery checks, owner-operators can enter the engine room through an insulated in-deck hatch. A pair of 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels with pod drives are easily accessible, as are the fuel and oil filters, generator, and ancillary systems. General maintenance should be completed without the need for chiropractic work, thanks to 54 inches of headroom and 42 inches of space between the motors. Access to the fuel and oil filters is on centerline.

Getting the 32,200-pound (dry weight) vessel up and charging felt effortless. Running with three crew, 130 gallons of fuel, and empty water and waste tanks, we putted around at 6.2 knots with the Volvo Pentas burning 2.3 gallons at 1,200 rpm. At 2,500 rpm, we saw 16 knots and a 22-gph burn rate. Jumping to 23.2 knots at 3,000 rpm had the diesels burning 30 gph.

Operating the 46 Cantius at about 23 knots, the hull ran true. The boat has a 16-degree transom deadrise, and there was no wavering or chine hopping. Going wide-open throttle at 3,550 rpm, the 46 delivered 31.1 knots at a fuel burn of 44 gph.

For cruising families or couples who want performance and fuel economy, along with an open layout for sharing the salt life with friends, the Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius is worth a look.

Rest and Relax

Belowdecks is an amidships master stateroom with a queen berth. Hullside windows bring in natural light, and the lower half of the windows tilt open for fresh air. There’s a portside chaise-style lounge and a 32-inch flat-screen TV; the en suite head has a separate shower stall and a walnut wood finish. A Splendide combination washer/dryer is an option. The VIP stateroom is forward with a walkaround queen berth on centerline, side windows, an overhead hatch and lockers. There’s also a 32-inch TV. Two underberth drawers measure 20 inches deep, 6 inches high and 26 inches wide apiece.

For transiting to the foredeck, there are grab rails along the house top. Side decks are sufficiently wide for walking without turning your body sideways, with side rails that extend all the way forward. On the foredeck is a U-shaped sun pad. Side loungers have tilt-up backrests. The center pad is aseat in a rectangular well; a teak table rises up and out from under the seat. The setup lets the sun-pad space convert to a sitting area that’s perfect for cocktails at sunset while on the hook. There’s an option for a foredeck sunshade, with four poles and a canvas that stow under the sun pads.

I guess this is the right forum for this.... I have been looking at some ads for Cruisers Yachts 415 Express 41' and would really like to hear from others that know much about the boat, or actually own the boat. Any information is desired, good or bad. Thanks.

Don't know about that boat/model, but I've known folks who had Cruisers boats and they liked them. FYI, ref your thread title, there's a difference between their "Express" and their "Express Motoryacht" models... and I think you're asking about the Express Motoryacht, perhaps like the one listed on YW in New Bern? If so... to your questions in the other thread, note the Propulsions section says "Volvo D6" (not IPS) and "Direct Drive" (not pods)... so that's one way to tell whether straight shafts or pods. Pros/cons for each. Can't tell about whether it has thrusters or not. I'd guess the 370-hp engines would be the entry-level ones, if Cruisers offered optional upgrades. Might be fine, depending on gearing. D6's have an OK rep, far as I know., and 985 hours isn't huge. Engine condition is very much driven by maintenance, though... so a neglected diesel with985 hours might not be as good a choice as a very well cared for diesel with 2500 hours (both assuming appropriate for the boat). All that aside... what do you like about the boat? What attracts you to it? -Chris

If you look at a full range of boats by Cruisers (for example), their "two story" boats are motoryachts and the "ranchers" are express boats. Cruisers just happens to use the word "express" for both, perhaps to suggest speed or something. Sea Ray Sundancers are express boats. Sea Ray motoryachts mostly look like basketball shoes. Then there are sportfishers/convertibles, sedan bridges/sport bridges, "trawlers," down east boats, etc... Et cetera. Each with typical features for the class... but the descriptive terms aren't hard and fast, makers play fast and loose with the dictionary... A common practice is to make an offer -- subject to some important stuff like marine survey. mechanical (engines & genset) survey, sea trial -- and during that process you can learn about engine condition and maintenance... or not. Recently I added "successful maintenance records review" as an additional "subject to" and that helped -- since I could do that review before spending money on the rest of it. So one of your requirements is comfort for 4 people, plus maybe a couple of kids. Good. (There are likely a bazillion boats that might do that.) Another requirement is "not huge" -- a little squishy, but also good. (Another bazillion, although significant overlap with the first requirement.) Easy for docking, ditto. I dunno about how that particular boat might be for docking, but I've seen some Cruisers motoryachts like that at various docks and I don't remember their side decks being anything to write home about. Also, it's typical for a "motoryacht" of some persuasion to have the helm mounted forward on the flying bridge... which in turn means good visibility forward... but also docking stern-to might be more difficult because of poor visibility astern. Compare to most sportfish/convertible styles where the helm is more often mounted aft on the flying bridge and visibility astern is usually very good. The issue is not unsolvable (including back-up cameras, etc.) but an example of pros/cons associated with various styles. Still, that one would probably need an in-person look to think about docking... although actual owners might pipe up. But it's a good example of where looking at boats up close and personal becomes necessary to get first-hand impressions. IOW, ads and the Powerboat Guide (or similar) or even fora like this one can only go so far... Back to features: What kind of "4 people"? Two couples? (Two full/queen mattresses nice.) One couple and two singles? (One full queen mattress and two twins or bunks could work.) What kind of "maybe a couple of extra kids?" Same gender, or not? Tiny, or mid-size, or...? (Twins or bunks or pull-outs could work.) How would you use the boat? Dock condo? Marina hopping? Anchoring out? Long distance travel? Some kind of mixture of some of those? All this, just examples of drilling down into requirements to maybe better refine your needs. Partly because it's usually much easier to solve problems of various sorts (space, capacity, ease of boarding, ease of docking, etc.) during the shopping phase. Yes, you can usually add a stern thruster. Be aware, bow thrusters and stern thrusters can fail (as can pretty much anything on a boat)... so a common suggestion is to learn to maneuver the boat without the extras. -Chris

Everybody's gotta start somewhere, and it's not like many of us were born knowing boat stuff. USCG Aux offers a decent course. The Waterway Guide and the ActiveCaptain app can show you information about marinas and common anchorages along the ICW. Ref rattling: yes, you can solve a lot during your shopping phase. And then you'll have it pretty close to "right" when you get to your third boat. Now that you have a feel for why the C415 might work, try two exercises: 1) find every similar boat and review the pros and cons of each compared to the C415 2) find significantly dissimilar boats and do the same kind of review. For example 1, Carver or or Silverton or Sea Ray or et cetera also make/made motoryachts. (several with open party decks) so have a look at those and compare features one by one. For example 2, find something like a sedan bridge or sport bridge boat of whatever useful size, and check out features compared to the C415. The Powerboat Guide might be a useful tool; the softcopy version is keyword searchable. It'd also be useful to walk the docks and just look at boats. From where you are, Barefoot. Grand Dunes, and Osprey Marinas, plus Southport and South Haven Harbour Marinas could give you a chance to see a lot of boats in person... maybe get a feel for what appeals... and what doesn't. Boat owners are usually happy to answer questions about their ride... -Chris

I don't think there's any difference in the 46 and 460, in fact I don't see any 460 in Power Boat Guide. See if you can get a copy of Power Boat Guide, by Mcknew & Parker, it will help you greatly in your search.
I looked on Amazon for Power Boat Guide and there are issues for several years. Would it make sense to get a current issue when I'm only looking at boats a few years old?? Also, some are listed as "Broker Editions". That doesn't sound like what I want, but I could be wrong???
Jytek said: ↑ I started looking at some Carver boats and think they might fit us even better. Thanks for steering me in that direction. I'm having trouble knowing the difference in the models, however. They have Carver 46, 460, 45, & 450. What are the differences??? Click to expand...

Cruisers Yachts - 2870 Express - Review

I'm considering a purchase of a 2001 Cruisers Yachts 2870 and would like any feedback that any of you may have on Cruisers Yachts in general, and specifics, if you have any. The boat has dual 5.0L Volvo engines - not sure what outdrives. Seems to be in really nice shape according to the pictures. It's being sold by a marina, not a personal sale. It includes an aluminum tri-axle trailer and seems to be well priced at 38K. What say you?

Re: Cruisers Yachts - 2870 Express - Review Back in the 1980's I had a Cruisers Yacht. I never had any problems with it whatsoever. It was a great boat, built well and built to last. With that said, I totally agree with Bob. Make sure to get a complete survey of the boat. After all, it's a 10 year old boat so who knows what it's been through during the last 10 years. Good Luck and I hope it works out for you.

2023 Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS

  • By Boating Tech Team
  • December 12, 2022

Cruisers Yachts debuts its new 50 GLS as the ultimate dayboat, which is true in one sense, but limiting in another. Yes, this is a huge express bowrider pushed along by triple 600 hp Merc outboards. But it’s also perfect for long weekends aboard, with two separate cabins and a surprisingly spacious head.

Start at the stern, where the Mercs hang from a wide transom that allows ample room to use the outdoor kitchen, featuring twin grills and a sink. Fold-down bulwarks stretch the usable floor space from the 14-foot-6-inch beam to 21 feet. The cockpit behind the windshield adds an L-shaped galley with twin fridges behind the helm, plus three L-shaped lounges and a settee aft with twin tables.

Stroll through the opening windshield and there is wraparound seating with three dedicated forward-facing seats with armrests for security. (Don’t forget the 1,800 hp on the transom.)

The skipper gets a dedicated adjustable seat with a headrest, and the companion seat handles two guests to keep an eye on the glass dash with triple 19-inch Simrad screens and advanced CZone digital switching. A bow thruster adds to the maneuverability. Most of the cockpit is covered by the fiberglass hardtop (with sunroof), while an awning extends to protect the remaining deck.

Below, a private master cabin has a queen-size berth forward, while the aft cabin has flexible single or double berths. Both cabins share a spacious head with a separate stall shower, and the salon has a fridge and TV.

The flagship of the Cruisers GLS line of seven boats (four with outboards), the 50 clearly calls to experienced boaters with the fold-down terraces aft, triple outboards that provide speed (56 mph), and a deep forward cockpit that’s safe for kids. Add to that the overnighting and long-weekending ability from the two cabins, full air conditioning with a generator, and thoughtful amenities, from cellphone chargers to a microwave for morning coffee.

Cruisers’ construction, from the sturdy stringer grid to the flawless joinerwork, has long been a hallmark of this company, and the 50 GLS with its modern details just adds to that luster.

High Points

  • All-fiberglass construction with foam coring prevents rot.
  • Folding cockpit “terraces” add flexibility and space at rest.
  • Designed to handle Mercury V-12 outboards.
  • Two distinct sleeping cabins make this more than just a dayboat.
  • The wide transom makes the outdoor galley and grills fully usable.
  • High coamings both fore and aft are safe for kids.
