At a gala ceremony in Ciragan Palace Kimpinski, the winners of BOAT International’s prestigious World Superyacht Awards were announced. The nominees represent the pinnacle of superyacht design from around the world, across both sailing and motor yachts. We are delighted to be able to bring you details of some of the evening’s winners.
Luxury superyacht KENSHO by Admiral Yachts
Motor yacht of the year: KENSH Ō
Despite stiff competition superyacht KENSHŌ was the winner by quite some margin with the judges commenting that her owner’s commitment to the project was the deciding factor. He travelled the world visiting around 100 landmark yachts to draw up a list of attributes he admired, and the result is this fabulous and unique design.
She was built by Admiral Yachts , part of The Italian Sea Group in collaboration with Netherlands based Azure, Germany’s archineers.berlin and Parisian design studio Jouin Manku. At 75m (246ft), she is the largest yacht produced by the shipyard to date, and since receiving this award, no-doubt the most celebrated.
Superyacht KENSHŌ is available for charter in all the top charter destinations.
ALEA superyacht
Sailing yacht of the year: ALEA
Sailing yacht ALEA’s owner wanted to create a performance yacht which could circumnavigate the world in speed and comfort. The resulting design from Germán Mani Frers, built by Vitters , is a stunning 56.0m (183’9″) vessel with a sleek and powerful hull form and distinctive reverse bow to increase speed. The comfort is provided by uncluttered decks, 360-degree views from the living areas and a sizeable beach club.
Sailing yacht ALEA is not currently available for charter, but runner up in the category, 34.59m (113’6”) sailing yacht SØRVIND can accommodate up to eight guests on charters around the Mediterranean .
Classic motor yacht MARALA
Rebuilt Yachts: MARALA
To be entered into the Rebuilt category, yachts must have undergone a significant renewal of the exterior, interior and technical areas. The standout winner was motor yacht MARALA, a classic Camper & Nicholson yacht, built in 1931 and boating an illustrious and fascinating history. Her rebuild over the last two and a half years at Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth has resulted in a yachting treasure being saved, which judges felt made her a stand-out winner in this category.
For more information about the beautifully and meticulously rebuilt superyacht MARALA and her story, read our dedicated article . She is available for unique charters around the Mediterranean for up to 12 guests, who will be looked after by a 19-person crew.

Kenshō, the recipient of the prestigious Motor Yacht of the Year award at the 2023 World Superyacht Awards, emerged victorious from a pool of remarkable contenders in the Semi-Displacement and Displacement Motor Yacht classes. Through an extensive evaluation process, Kenshō, meaning “seeing one’s true nature” in Japanese, triumphed decisively, owing to its distinctive qualities driven by the discerning owner’s vision.
The yacht’s meticulous design, curated after the owner’s visits to prominent vessels worldwide, resulted in noteworthy features such as elevated deckheads, serene room volumes, minimized side decks, and the absence of a main saloon.
Alea, a remarkable sailing yacht designed by Germán Mani Frers and impeccably built by Vitters, has been bestowed with the prestigious title of Sailing Yacht of the Year at the esteemed World Superyacht Awards 2023. Alea emerged triumphant due to her exceptional design tailored to her owner’s specific desires.
Frers’ ingenuity manifested in a powerful and streamlined hull, featuring a distinct reverse bow to enhance waterline length and speed while maintaining comfortable sailing angles.
Marala, a timeless motor yacht originally crafted by Camper & Nicholsons in 1931, has garnered unanimous acclaim as the outstanding winner in the Rebuild class. Following an extensive two-and-a-half-year reconstruction at Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, Marala’s original essence was painstakingly revitalized by stripping away previous modifications.
With over 100 tonnes of steel replaced, primarily in the unfaired hull to preserve its authentic appearance, Marala underwent meticulous enhancements in stability, services, and power systems, ensuring her preservation as a cherished maritime treasure.
The World Superyacht Awards 2023 also celebrated a host of other remarkable winners, including Atho s in the Refitted Yachts category, Sørvind in the Sailing Yachts segment for vessels ranging from 30m to 49.9m, and Alea for Sailing Yachts measuring 50m and above.
Blue Jeans triumphed in the Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts class for yachts spanning 30m to 34.9m, while Rus h emerged victorious in the 35m to 41.9m category, and Callisto claimed the coveted title in the 42m and above division. In the realm of Displacement Motor Yachts, Unknown claimed victory in the 30m to 39.9m range, Acal a secured the accolade for yachts measuring 40m to 44.9m, and Ocean Z triumphed in the 45m and above category within the 499GT and below classification.
Notably, Come Togethe r emerged as the victor in the Displacement Motor Yachts division for vessels ranging from 500GT to 1,499GT, while Kenshō claimed the crown in the 1,500GT and above category. Additional distinguished awards included the Voyager’s Award presented to V6 , the Legacy Award bestowed upon Rahmi M. Koç , and Judges’ Special Awards granted to Shinkai, Coral Ocean , and Nebula , signifying their extraordinary contributions to the superyacht industry.
The 2023 World Superyacht Awards has thus heralded the celebration of worthy maritime achievements, each signifying a hallmark of extraordinary yacht craftsmanship and design. From distinguished motor yachts to groundbreaking sailing vessels, these remarkable recipients have set a new benchmark in superyacht standards.

By Nina Done 23 May 2023
The 18th edition of the World Superyacht Awards kicked off with cocktails in Turkey ’s vibrant capital, Istanbul over the weekend, and saw an impressive selection of charter yachts win a coveted Neptune trophy during the exclusive prize-giving ceremony.
The annual black-tie gala dinner event celebrates the world’s finest superyachts of the year, recognising and rewarding ingenuity and craftsmanship in the design, engineering and construction of the luxury yachts.
Using a secret ballot system by an independent judging panel made up of experienced superyacht owners, the World Superyacht Awards are the only peer-reviewed yachting awards in the world.
Hosted at the elegant Mandarin Oriental along the glittering shoreline of the Bosphorus, the elite of the superyacht world, owners and industry leaders gathered to celebrate this year’s event where 15 Neptunes were up for grabs, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year and Sailing Yacht of the Year awards.
In an event that saw 49 nominees fight it out across 15 categories, charter yachts were awarded trophies in 7 of the categories. Here are the charter yachts that picked up a trophy at this year’s World Superyacht Awards;
Winner: Motor Yacht of the Year
Scooping the top award of the evening, the striking 75m (247ft) Admiral superyacht KENSHÕ was declared the winner by a comfortable margin, having wowed the judges with her owner-driven attributes, charter-focused amenities, high ceilings and Zen-calm interiors. She has also been lauded for her innovative engineering, harvesting power from five variable-speed generators using a diesel-electric propulsion system.
Winner: Best rebuilt Yacht
Following an extensive refit over two and a half years at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK , the 59m (193ft) classic yacht MARALA – originally built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1931 – has been lovingly restored to her former glory. Judges were impressed by the meticulous work undertaken to preserve her period features while paying homage to her fascinating storied history, such as her time in military service. Her interiors have also been given the full treatment, with a distinct nod to the avant-garde design influences of the era that can be seen throughout her interior spaces and accommodation.
Winner: Best Refitted Yacht
Catching the judges’ eye, they felt the arresting 63-meter schooner yacht ATHOS merited this coveted accolade chiefly for the exceptionally high-quality work undertaken by Royal Huisman ’s refit yard in Amsterdam. Under the supervision of her original architect, Andre Hoek, ATHOS was given new booms, sails and lightweight carbon-fiber rigging, as well as an extended stern to accommodate a larger cockpit adjoining the new owner's cabin, and newly repositioned navigation station.
Winner: Sailing Yachts, 30m to 49.9m
Built in Cape Town by Southern Wind Shipyard in 2022, the 35m (114ft) sailing yacht SØRVIND has already enjoyed a slew of nominations for her interior design, naval architecture and outstanding exteriors, so it might not come as a huge surprise that she scooped the Sailing Yacht gong in her category after impressing judges by her high-performance capabilities, charter-focused amenities, Scandi-cool interiors and highly practical accommodation layout.
Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 30m to 39.9m
Benetti 's Oasis 34M yacht UNKNOWN is certainly no unsung wallflower, garnering a raft of accolades since her arrival onto the scene in 2022 that lauded her strong connection with water and nature through her extensive glazing, harmonious indoor/outdoor areas and the Italian yard's award-winning Oasis Deck®. This is precisely what inspired the judges, who admired the yacht’s open aft beach club spanning across two decks, culminating in the infinity pool that straddles two levels, and additional sense of space created by her fold-down bulwarks – deployed for guests to enjoy while at anchor. They were also impressed by the number of alfresco relaxation and entertainment areas peppered across her deck spaces, which they considered truly remarkable for her size category and worthy of a Neptune.
Judges’ Commendation: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 40m to 44.9m
Deemed by the judges as “an enviable all-rounder”, the 44m (145ft) yacht ACE has certainly proved a standout contender since her launch earlier this year. Built by the up-and-coming Conrad Shipyard in Poland, the judges admired the yacht for her striking good looks, convivial crew areas and technical engineering features. Already a finalist in her category at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2023, superyacht ACE also wowed the WSA judges with her generous proportions, reimagined deck spaces and elegant interiors.
Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts, 500 GT to 1,499 GT
Come together.
It was inevitable that the successful pairing of the esteemed Espen Øino and Damen Yachting would end up scooping an award for their geometrically striking yachts that turn heads wherever they cruise, with the Amels 60 Limited Edition yacht COME TOGETHER proving no exception. Renowned for their next-generation design culture, Damen have been instrumental in creating yachts that not only deliver on space and luxurious comfort but also harnessing a raft of sustainable features, which ultimately won over the judges. Notable features include the seamless blend between Winch Design’s masculine interior scheme with Espen Øino’s angular and geometric exterior styling, the yacht’s innovative sundeck layout and hybrid-propulsion technology.
Judges’ Special Awards
Coral ocean.
Narrowly missing out on the Best Refit Award, the judges had been so impressed by her transformative upgrade that they felt the vast 73m (238ft) superyacht CORAL OCEAN deserved one of their special awards. Suitably impressed by her charter-rich amenities, the Lürssen yacht now features an entirely rebuilt sundeck, with sumptuous loungers and a glass-bottomed spa pool adjoining a central deckhouse housing an informal dining area, bar and TV lounge, with an integrated state-of-the-art sound system creating the perfect day to night party hub. Originally designed by the award-winning London-based studio Bannenberg and Rowell, the superyacht's styling now offers a neutral scheme with subtle color accents and Art Deco-inspired geometric motifs throughout.
The World Superyacht Awards will be back again next year to herald another superb selection of superyachts.

The 2023 World Superyacht Awards saw 19 Neptune trophies handed out to the standout superyachts from the past year
The World Superyacht Awards are unique in the industry as they are judged by an independent and exclusive panel of 23 current and former superyacht owners, who collectively bring hundreds of years of experience to the judging process. Led by chairman Richard Raper, the judges made more than 120 individual visits to this year’s nominated yachts.
The 2023 Motor Yacht of the Year accolade went to 74.9m Kenshō , built by Admiral, a brand of The Italian Sea Group. The yacht, which features a diesel-electric propulsion system, was praised for her “owner-driven attributes” and won by a decisive margin.
The Germán Frers-designed 56m Alea was named Sailing Yacht of the Year. Built by Vitters for an owner who wanted to “circumnavigate the world in speed and comfort”, she impressed the judges with her attractive profile, uncluttered decks and sizeable beach club.
Other notable winners of the evening included the 33.7m Van Der Valk Blue Jeans , which won the Neptune in the Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts, 30m to 34.9m category.
In the Displacement Motor Yachts 500GT to 1,499GT category, Come Together , the first Amels 60 designed by Espen Øino and Winch Design, was triumphant.
British yard Pendennis was awarded a Neptune for the rebuild of 58.8m classic motoryacht Marala , and Huisfit’s transformation of the 63.3m schooner Athos was named the Best Refit. This year’s Voyager’s Award went to V6 , for a North American journey taking in the beauty of Alaska with spectacular photography.
“This year’s World Superyacht Award winners once again represent the pinnacle of this remarkable industry,” said Stewart Campbell, Editor-in-Chief at BOAT International. “The skill, attention to detail and innovation shown by the designers and shipyards, combined with the imagination of the owners, has created some truly exceptional vessels. As the only awards programme in our industry judged by owners, the winners of this year’s Neptune trophies should feel justly proud of their achievements.”
The evening also took time to recognise Rahmi M Koç for his remarkable life in business, philanthropy and boats. A passionate yachtsman, he has owned an impressive portfolio of yachts throughout his lifetime – including his current flagship Nazenin V , a Sparkman & Stephens-designed 52m built at RMK, his own shipyard in Istanbul. Koç’s children took to the stage to receive the Legacy Award on his behalf.

Last Year’s NFL Honors Award Winners
Last year, Patrick Mahomes was honored at the 2023 NFL Honors as the 2022-2023 NFL MVP before going on to win his second Super Bowl. While he isn’t going to win the award this year, he is once again in the big game, looking to be a back-to-back champion.
Mahomes spent much of his time last year thanking his family after winning the award in what was a heartwarming acceptance speech.
“To my wife Brittany, my baby girl Sterling, and my son Bronze, this crazy life that we are living means nothing without y’all keeping me balanced and making me appreciate every single day,” he said.
“No matter how I feel coming home, y’all bring me joy and make me appreciate the time that I get to spend with y’all. Thank you for always being there for me during my good times and my bad. Love y’all.”
Meanwhile, Vikings WR Justin Jefferson brought home the award for Offensive Player of the Year, and 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa was honored with the Defensive Player of the Year award.
The two coaches honored last year were Brian Daboll (Coach of the Year) and DeMeco Ryans (Assistant Coach of the Year). Ryans then went on to become the Houston Texans head coach and led current Offensive Rookie of the Year nominee C.J. Stroud and the team to a playoff spot.
WR Garrett Wilson and CB Sauce Gardner were honored as the Rookies of the Year. And in a moving speech, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year.

“My mother told me when she was diagnosed with cancer that, ‘All greats have a story. Allow me to be your story.’ She is my ‘why.’ And with these words, just as she does and always did, my mother inspired me and motivated me to be great beyond the circumstances. And it was in her honor I that started my foundation in 2017 and named it Faith, Fight, Finish, the three words she left me and my brothers.”

‘20 Days in Mariupol’ wins best documentary Oscar, a first for AP and PBS’ ‘Frontline’
Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” a harrowing first-person account of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, won the best documentary Oscar on Sunday. A joint production of The Associated Press and PBS’ “Frontline,” statuettes were awarded to Chernov, producer and editor Michelle Mizner and producer Raney Aronson-Rath. The Oscar — and nomination — was a first for both Chernov, an AP video journalist, and the 178-year-old news organization.
Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” a harrowing chronicle of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has won best documentary at the 96th Academy Awards. The Oscar win, a first for The Associated Press and PBS’ “Frontline,” came as the war in Ukraine passed the two-year mark with no signs of abating.
Speaking on the red carpet of the Academy Awards, Mstyslav Chernov - director of documentary “20 Days in Mariupol” - says its important the “world understands the seriousness of what’s going on and the urgency of what’s going on” in Ukraine. (March 10)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” a harrowing first-person account of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, won the best documentary Oscar on Sunday night.
A joint production of The Associated Press and PBS’ “Frontline,” the Oscar — and nomination — was a first for both Chernov, an AP video journalist, and the 178-year-old news organization. This was the third nomination and first win for “Frontline.”
Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko arrived an hour before Russia began bombing the port city. Two weeks later, they were the last journalists working for an international outlet in the city, sending crucial dispatches to the outside world showing civilian casualties of all ages, the digging of mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital and the sheer extent of the devastation.
“This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and I’m honored,” an emotional Chernov said. “Probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish I’d never made this film, I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine.”
He called on Russia to cease aggression in Ukraine. “I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their land, all the civilians who are in their jails,” he said.
“We can make sure that the history record is set straight and the truth will prevail, and that the people of Mariupol, and those who have given their lives, will never be forgotten. Because cinema forms memories and memories form history.”
Chernov ended his speech by switching to his native language, uttering his nation’s salute, “Slava Ukraini,” which means “Glory to Ukraine.”
Statuettes were awarded to Chernov, producer and editor Michelle Mizner and producer Raney Aronson-Rath; AP Vice President Derl McCrudden is also a credited producer on the film and was among those onstage to accept the award.
While reporting on the invasion, Chernov encountered quite a few different reactions to the team’s presence on the ground. Some thanked the journalists for doing their jobs. Some called them prostitutes. Some doctors urged them to film graphic scenes of injured and dead children to show the world what had been done.
Only about 40 minutes of footage made it out to the world in real time because of poor connections, but when Chernov and his colleagues were finally able to leave, he decided he needed to do something with the 30-some hours they had on tape. Chernov, who was born in Ukraine, narrated the documentary as well.
The work of Chernov, Maloletka, Stepanenko and Lori Hinnant won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for public service and featured prominently that same year in a Pulitzer for breaking news photography.
“20 Days in Mariupol” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won an audience award. It went on to claim best documentary from the Directors Guild and BAFTA and was considered a favorite for the Academy Award going into the night. It won the prize over a strong slate of documentary features, including “Four Daughters,” “The Eternal Memory,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” and “To Kill a Tiger.” Last year, “Navalny,” about the Russian opposition leader who died just last month, won best documentary.
And while the awards run for “Mariupol” has come to a close, each new prize and platform has provided a stark reminder that, more than two years, later the war is still ongoing. On the same day Chernov learned he was nominated for an Oscar, he learned that his hometown of Kharkiv had just been subject to a deadly bombing by Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in late February that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since Russia launched its full-scale invasion .
“The Last Repair Shop” won for best documentary short. The film, co-directed by Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, profiles the craftspeople who fix thousands of musical instruments used by Los Angeles schoolchildren. “Music education isn’t just about creating incredible musicians, it’s about creating incredible humans,” said Bowers.
