Originally settled by fishermen from Sri Lanka and India around 300 BC, the Maldives were inhabited by Buddhists for nearly 1,500 years – evidenced by the ruins of monasteries peppered across some of the islands. After this time Islam became the dominant religion after the islands' garnered interest from Arab traders, with coir ropes made from the husks of coconut shells being the dominant export from the 12th Century onwards.

Due to their strategic location on the major shipping routes of the Indian Ocean , the islands have been respectively governed by the Portuguese, Dutch and British over the centuries. In 1965, the Maldives gained their independence and today remain a presidential democracy. The islands’ also have strong cultural influences from Sri Lanka and India which can be seen in their music, dance, customs and local dishes.

The Maldives has become one of the most popular winter charter destinations for those looking for an alternative to the usual Caribbean “milk run”. It's not surprising that yachts are flocking to this country, with its glorious endless garlands of reefs, secluded aquamarine lagoons and deep-water anchorages, making it the ultimate yacht charter vacation.

If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Maldivian getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in the Maldives

With a good variety of motor yacht charter options available to you; from sleek, sporty models to larger superyachts with all the bells and whistles, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding your perfect yacht. That said, although there are plenty of deep water anchorages in the Maldives, smaller motor yachts can offer greater access to the reefs and lagoons.

Sailing Yacht Charters in the Maldives

Sailing yachts are a great way to explore the Maldives, with the optimum time during the monsoon season from November to April, which produces a steady north-easterly – perfect conditions for the sailing adventure of a lifetime.

Another popular choice is a  catamaran , with shallow drafts and easy access to the water; these are the ideal boats for island-hopping and exploring exquisite clusters of coral reefs surrounded by waters in infinite shades of blue.

With the good variety of options available, there should be something to suit every type of budget in this region. The average prices for motor and sailing yacht charters in Maldives are as follows;

  • For motor yacht rentals in the Maldives, prices can range from $62,667 to $1.1m per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in the Maldives, prices can go from $62,407 to $290,879 weekly, plus expenses

The Maldives is located near the equator and so enjoys year-round balmy temperatures of between 25-30 degrees celsius.

The best time to visit this idyllic location is from November to April – during the Northern Hemisphere winter, with the busiest months being  December and January . This period coincides with their northeast monsoon, which is the dry season and produces warm mild winds, perfect for yacht charters.

That said, you can still visit throughout the year, just bear in mind the winds might be less favorable, with more chance of rain.

Yacht charters usually commence in the North Malé Atoll , where the colorful and vibrant Maldivian capital of Malé is situated. With its central location, international airport and small yacht marina, it makes this spot the ideal gateway to the Maldives.

Explore Malé Atoll’s divine palm-fringed reefs and luxurious resorts, before heading north through the Hukurudhoo Uthuru Kandu channel to Ari Atoll , where you will find rich coral reefs abundant with colorful reef fish, as well as huge shoals of manta rays and barracudas.

Head north towards the stunning Baa and Raa Atolls , boasting world-class dive sites, exquisite tranquil reefs and an abundance of protected marine ecology, perfect for spotting the magnificent whale sharks that feed on the area’s rich sources of plankton all year round. The Northern Atolls also contain many Buddhist and Hindu monuments and artifacts, belying its diverse cultural and religious history.

In the more populated islands of the Southern atolls, you will find the romantic heart-shaped Addu Atoll , the quintessential image of the Maldives. Head to Gan , which boasts its own small international airport, and explore the Feydoo , Maradoo and Hithadoo islands on foot across causeways linking the islands.

The newly developed Crossroads Marina Maldives is part of a multi-island integrated leisure complex, situated on the stunning Kaafu Atoll on the Emboodhoo lagoon – just a 15-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport , and a short hop to the capital of Malé .

This deluxe marina caters to yachts of up to 50m (164ft) and also boasts its own 800-meter beach. Its two linked island resorts, Saii Maldives Lagoon and Hard Rock Hotel,  offer fantastic retail therapy, spas and wellness centers as well as exquisite dining options.

A number of other resorts in the Maldives have their own marinas, although they tend to have their own boats which are made available to guests staying at their hotels.

The Maldives is a developing yachting hub, with current plans for more marinas in the pipeline, including in the capital Malé and Dhonakhuli Island in the north.

There are a vast amount of extraordinarily breathtaking and diverse anchorages for you to choose from, peppered throughout its myriad saltwater lagoons and oceans that surround the palm-fringed reefs.

The most spectacular anchorages can be found around the Ari, Kaafu and North Male Atolls in the central region, as well as at Baa and Raa Atolls in the North. To the south, you will find plenty of good anchorages on Thaa and Addu Atolls .

So, relax, unwind and soak up the blissful paradise because this yacht charter promises to be out of this world. Dive into the inviting turquoise-blue waters and glide among colorful shoals of fish and exquisite coral islands – just don't forget your snorkel!

  • The Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve and a popular hotspot for visitors wanting to see the shoals of manta rays and whale sharks. For this reason, the area is strictly regulated and there is an 80-person capacity at any time. Therefore, it is essential to book ahead to ensure you don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • Have plenty of cash to hand as the only ATMs are in Malé. Although the Maldives has its own currency, US dollars are widely accepted.
  • Some anchorages are in fairly deep water, which may be an issue for yachts with a smaller anchor chain. Plus, access to the lagoons through the coral reefs that fringe the atolls can sometimes prove problematic. This has been remedied in places where parts of the outer reef have been blasted away to facilitate access.
  • Some of the best anchorages are based around the island resorts, but you should be mindful they will likely charge a fee to anchor or land your yacht at their resorts.
  • Please note that the tap water is not drinkable in the Maldives, so bear that in mind if you plan to venture ashore.
  • Be sure to respect the Muslim culture in the Maldives by adhering to their dress codes, especially around the towns and cities.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives, with the exception of the resorts.

The Maldives has three main areas: Northern, Central and Southern Atolls – each with their own unique characteristics.

Northern Atolls

an blue underwater reef with manta rays and colourful reef fish and corals

In the northern region of the Maldives, you will find the breathtaking Baa Atoll , encompassing lush tropical islands fringed by endless powder-white beaches and phenomenal marine ecology, earning it the first UNESCO World Biosphere status . Visit the marine protected area of Hanifaru Bay on the eastern edge of Baa Atoll, and swim with thousands of manta rays performing graceful loops as they hoover rich plankton.

Another must-see is the eco Soneva Fushi resort where you can discover the art of glass-blowing, or enjoy stargazing from the observatory.

The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru is an island sanctuary situated in the Biosphere Reserve, dedicated to conservation. This resort is the absolute last word in luxury, including wellness and ayurvedic spa therapies allowing you to squeeze in a heavenly pamper session during your yacht charter. For adventurous souls, it also offers a chance to explore the kaleidoscopic underwater world in your own personal submarine, without even getting wet!

Raa Atoll to the north has only recently opened to the public and retains an untouched beauty unrivaled anywhere else in the world.

Central Atolls

The Central Atolls encompass a number of popular island reefs in the region, including the North and South Malé Atolls, as well as the stunning  Ari Atoll out to the west.

The Maldivian capital of  Malé is located on the North Malé Atoll , a colorful island metropolis where you will be swept up in its rhythmic vibe and hustle.

Head over to the award-winning Conrad Hilton Maldives on Rangali Island and dine amongst shoals of fish and rays in the world's first underwater glass restaurant, Ithaa .

From Male, head south to the multi-island luxurious resort at Crossroads Maldives , linked with two other luxury resorts, which also boasts a marina that caters to yachts of up to 55m (180ft).

Many people visit the Central Atolls for diving, which is a truly transcendent experience. You will find excellent dive sites around the Rasdhoo Atoll , where you can swim amongst parrotfish, dolphins, blacktip reef sharks and hammerheads.

Some of the best-recommended dive sites can be found in the Ari Atolls, which includes Ulkulhas Thila in North Ari Atoll , a fantastic place to witness the majestic manta rays, as well as Kuda Tah Thila in the South Ari Atoll , teeming with masses of rainbow-colored reef fish – an unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever.

Southern Atolls

The Southern Atolls are renowned for their romantic secluded beauty popular with honeymooners and epitomized by the heart-shaped picture-perfect image of Addu Atoll , used in thousands of holiday brochures to sell the glorious dream of a Maldives getaway.

Addu Atoll is located in the extreme south of the Maldives, extending past the equator into the Southern Hemisphere. Once a British Naval base, there are numerous sheltered lagoons to anchor in. The Atoll is naturally protected from storms by its heart-shaped barrier reef, providing the area with a rich abundance of tropical marine flora and fauna, making it a superb spot to snorkel in the calm turquoise waters. To the west lies the populated Addu City , as well as a number of luxury resorts.

Gan island , located in the southern end of the Atoll, has its own international airport with regular flights from the capital, Malé.

Many islands in the Southern Atolls are uninhabited, filling you with a sense of peace and tranquility as you decide on which exquisite white sandbar to set up your picnic.

Maldives Yacht Charter Q&A

There should be ample yachts for charter in the Maldives, so you can be sure to find an option that suits both you and your budget, although we do recommend booking early to ensure you secure your perfect yacht around your preferred dates and itinerary.

Before you book, you should factor in additional costs that aren't covered in the base rate, such as berthing, fuel, local taxes, food and drink and crew tips.

Most yacht charters in the Maldives start off from its bustling capital Malé, located on North Malé Atoll. With its central location, international airport and yacht marina, it makes Malé the ideal gateway to the Maldives.

Alternatively, for yacht charters cruising the southern atolls Gan is a popular choice, with its own international airport serving regular flights from the capital it is the ideal jumping off point for yacht charters around these spectacular reefs, including the much-photographed heart-shaped Addu Atoll, as well as the stunning Feydoo, Maradoo and Hithadoo islands.

To discover your perfect yacht, please browse our site for a comprehensive catalogue of yachts available to charter around the Maldives. If you make an enquiry, a yacht charter broker will contact you with a customised yacht charter proposal based on your requirements.

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht charter broker , and they will help you find your ideal yacht and preferred dates for you and your charter party.

With its proximity to the equator, the Maldives enjoys year-round balmy temperatures. The best time to visit is in the dry season which occurs during the Northeast Monsoon between November and April, coinciding neatly with the Northern Hemisphere winter.

Here are some things to consider;

  • The northern Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere reserve) –  the area is strictly regulated with an 80-person capacity at any time. Therefore, it is essential to book ahead to ensure you don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • Some deep anchorages, plus shallow access to some of the reefs can prove problematic.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Weather in the Maldives

The Maldives is a state consisting of almost 1,200 coral islands stretching from north to south. It gained it’s independence in 1968. The climate is subequatorial, hot, the maximum temperature of water and air is about 30 ° C. The best time for chartering the boat is from November to March, when the northeast monsoons prevail. The rainy season lasts all summer.

Great plus of this destination is well-established air traffic: most European countries to the archipelago have direct flights almost every day.

The flight from Europe to the Maldivian Hulule Airport takes about 10 hours. Some tourists may need to have a visa, but it is usually automatically stamped at the airport upon presentation of a voucher issued by a travel or charter company.

Sailing in the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the most spectacular places in the world. A lot of photos with snow-white coral sand and shallow turquoise waters that you may see in calendars and desktops are made there. The islands are a mountain range that has sunk under the water and protrudes slightly above the surface of the sea. This is the “lowest” country in the world: the average height above sea level is only 1.5 meters.

The archipelago has a reputation of a paradise, which is preferred by lovers and newlyweds, however, serene romance is far from the only format available for tourists. If you want to fully enjoy the beauty and diversity of the “flower of India”, we recommend renting a yacht in the Maldives. This is an unforgettable experience that will allow you to see many amazingly beautiful places - both above and below the surface of the water. To rent a yacht in the Maldives means to get impressions inaccessible to ordinary "beach" tourists and to take not only beautiful, but also interesting pictures.

The Maldives is famous for the fact that each island is either one luxury hotel with fantastic white beaches and bungalows, or an uninhabited island with amazing flora and fauna. Several islands, including the only island city of Male, are inhabited by locals. There is also a marina where you can rent a yacht. Most popular in the Maldives is the rental of a catamaran or premium yacht. A catamaran with less draft allows you to walk as close to reefs as possible. In general, given the large number of reefs, it is better to rent a yacht in the Maldives with a captain or if you have sufficient yachting experience.

Cuisine in the Maldives

Sailing yacht or catamaran charter actually gives travelers the ability to move around in a floating mini-hotel. You may hire a cook who will be happy to prepare traditional local dishes for you. Cuisine in the Maldives stands on three pillars: seafood, fruits and coconut milk. The main dish of the archipelago is tuna with rice, which is served with various seasonings and sauces. Smoked tuna “maskhuni” with coconut pulp, lime juice and spices is also popular. If you decide to rent a yacht in the Maldives and go on a cruise around the islands, you will have a chance to try these and other dishes in their many variations.

In addition to the natural beauties and gastronomic delights, the Maldives is distinguished by a distinctive culture, in which Arabian, African and Asian influences are distinctly traced. For an active traveler seeking not only to relax in a hammock under palm trees, but also to get acquainted with real life, a yacht charter in the Maldives is a very attractive option.

Interestingly, in the Maldives, the main transport are sailing and motor boats. Most of the transportation is carried out by boats and seaplanes. Land public transport does not exist, since only two islands have roads. Any island can be crossed in 1.5-2 hours. Between the islands "dons" constantly transport people and goods. Large Vedis boats are used for long voyages to distant atolls.

However, those who choose a yacht charter will use all these means of transportation only out of curiosity, because they will always have at their disposal a comfortable vessel that meets all requests and wishes.

Fans of diving and snorkeling will especially appreciate this option: renting a yacht in the Maldives will give them a chance to easily reach distant atolls, where the purity of the water provides fantastic visibility and the underwater world amazes with paradise colors and bizarre shapes. The Maldives is an excellent place for diving, and few tourists avoid the temptation to plunge into the bright waters of the Indian Ocean with a mask or scuba diving at least once. In addition to coral reefs, you can look at caves, the remains of sunken ships and other attractions.

Another adventure worth renting a yacht in the Maldives is fishing. Popular fishing species are sailboat, barracuda, swordfish, tuna, blue and black marlin, sea bass. Despite the fact that many resorts organize morning, evening and night fishing expeditions on speed boats and sailboats, yacht rental gives in this sense much more freedom. We recommend anglers to take an experienced guide to help: fishing in these waters has its own characteristics. For example, due to the fact that the fish is often characterized by large size and strength, it may take considerable effort and dexterity to pull you out, and tackle can require remarkable strength. So if fishing is adrenaline for you, and not meditation, your option is to rent a yacht with a team experienced in this sport. Also note that the law prohibits fishing in places that have the status of protected areas (this can be any coral reef near the hotel), therefore it is better to deal with it under the guidance of a local expert. An imposing fine is imposed for poaching, even unintentionally.

Renting a boat

And of course, you can always rent a yacht in the Maldives for a romantic trip, a spectacular wedding or other celebration. 12 knots will find the right boat for your sailing vacation.

So, if you decide to rent a yacht in the Maldives, then you are either a fan of underwater beauty or who wants to visit the most amazing beaches of the Indian Ocean. For those and other Maldives - just a fabulous paradise with an abundance of all kinds of diving centers and beautiful hotels. Seekers of peace and solitude are recommended to visit uninhabited islands, for landing on which you must obtain permission in advance. Yacht parking on these islands is usually free.

Yacht charters in the Maldives will allow you to see unique places like: Fulhadhu Beach with palm trees and a sand scythe leaning towards the water, Maadhu Beach, where you can taste local dishes right by the water. Taking a yacht on a charter, you will not be attached to one hotel, but you will be able to see different islands and take away with you a lot of unforgettable impressions.

Yacht Charters in the Maldives: Key Benefits

  • Great opportunities for landscape and underwater photography
  • Hundreds of interesting diving sites
  • One of the best exotic fishing spots in the world.
  • A large number of diverse islands, including uninhabited

Maldives Yacht Charters

You have yet to experience the sweetest solitude until you’ve chartered a yacht in the Maldives. Known for its world-class diving, entire luxury resort isles, and breathtaking beaches at secluded anchorages, this archipelago of 1100+ islands across 26 atolls inspires awe in all who have had the pleasure of witnessing it.

The Maldives yacht charters take you to a cerulean blue masterpiece of ocean and desert isles, surrounded by a network of reefs that give rise to its signature calm waters and lagoons swimming with sea life. Its luxurious resort bungalows on stilts and a sparse local population make finding your own secluded island a tantalizing option.

As the flattest country on Earth, the Maldives average a mere 2.5 meters above sea level, giving way to its signature “underwater” bars, restaurants and hotels. Most of the locals live across just 200 of the islands, leaving much to be discovered between the coconut palms.

Explore with a Boat Charter: Maldives Highlights

  • Visit some of the most beautiful atolls in the world
  • Meet the manta rays

Maldives Yachting Season

One of the best times to book a yacht charter in the Maldives is from December to May when the climate is dry and the southwest monsoon season has passed. Yet, it’s safe to say the Maldives has moderate weather with a nice island breeze all year round due to its proximity to the equator.

From May to October, the southwest monsoon does bring a bit of wind and rain. The east and central areas of the islands receive the most rains and are subject to storms from February to March, while the west and south coastlines are drier and much milder.

Maldives Catamaran Charters

Catamaran charters in the Maldives are one of the most popular choices. One reason is that catamarans offer the exhilaration of sailing, but with a smoother ride. For example, you won’t experience the dramatic heeling you would in a traditional sailboat.

Yet, the main reason catamarans are the sailboat of choice is that they’re perfect for exploring the Maldives shallow coral reefs. Catamarans have shallow drafts, and that makes it possible to sail closer to beaches, over reefs and right up to dive spots, and therefore, they’re the perfect vessel for those wanting to take advantage of the Maldives incredible diving and snorkeling.

Not to mention, catamarans offer spaciousness, allowing guests to relax and spread out. Many catamarans also have sprawling sunpads, which make them perfect for soaking up the Maldives’ warm rays.

Maldives Yacht Charters: What to Do & See

Vaavu atoll in the Maldives

The next best thing to buying a desert island is to go on a yacht charter in Maldives. The days are open to selecting the next island to visit, or you may just find inner peace while relaxing at the spa, tasting the island flavors, snorkeling the lagoons, and diving into untouched underwater landscapes.

Whether it’s a sunset swim, a nap beneath the banyan tree, or an exciting ride on a seaplane, the Maldives do not disappoint. No matter the day, the next star-filled sky is just an evening away.

Spend Days at the Spa

Luxury spas are scattered throughout the resort islands, which is one of the greatest advantages of chartering the Maldives. Emboodhu Finolhu hosts the grand Taj Exotica Resort & Spa in one of the largest lagoons (an enchanting sight) while the Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa on the island of Hembadhu is another such resort island with dramatic sunset views.

Within the lagoon of Huvafen, Huvafen Fushi is the most unique spa with a different kind of view. This underwater spa is located eight meters below the surface—and is the only of its kind in the world. The underwater spa offers a relaxing view of fishes and coral reefs to accompany the day’s treatment. Others opt for a pampering session and massage at the opulent One & Only Reethi Rah resort.

Taste the Island Flavor

The Maldivian cuisine is rich in fresh, local ingredients, with curries ranging from spicy to sweet. It’s rich in local staples like fresh barracudas, trevallies, tropical fruit desserts, and New and Old World wines. Halaveli Island is one such place that offers a chance to experience wines from Africa, New Zealand, and France through a “lagoon wine tasting.”

A unique way to experience the local cuisine is for a private yacht chef to prepare the fish reeled in from a day’s fishing expedition. Having a yacht charter in the Maldives gives you the freedom to catch and savor something fresh from the waters.

Diving into Reefs and Lagoons

Admire the elegance of wildlife while diving the reefs and snorkeling the lagoons of the Maldives. With about 30 meters of visibility and colorful living reefs, it’s no wonder the diving here is world-class. One of the best parts about having a private yacht charter in the Maldives is the ability to make the best use of your time. That is, the diving is so abundant, it would take years to experience it all—so stay a little while.

The island of Hembadhu is ideal for snorkeling or diving of all types. It holds 600 species of fishes, sea turtles, and a shipwreck that can be easily accessed along the reef. Another shipwreck, the Maldives Victory Wreck, can be found in Malé Atoll.

One of the largest displays of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean can be found at Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve. Lagoons are scattered throughout the archipelago, including the vast lagoon at Maadhu Finolhu that offers a stunning spot for snorkeling.

Book Your Maldives Yacht Charter

Between thousands of island and coral reef structures throughout the archipelago, a charter in the Maldives is the trip of a lifetime. Book your private yacht charter, and we’ll help you dream up your most luxurious vacation yet.

About Maldives

Why is Maldives a good sailing destination?

Firstly, the Maldives are renowned for their exceptional natural beauty. Picture endless white-sand beaches, aquamarine lagoons, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life – all this and more await you here. Sailing between the islands provides a unique perspective, allowing you to discover secluded beaches and secret dive spots that are inaccessible from land.

Secondly, the Maldives has a tropical monsoon climate, offering year-round warm weather. The waters remain calm and clear most of the year, making it ideal for sailing. Even in the wet season, the rain often falls in short, intense showers, followed by clear skies – so you can usually enjoy a full day on the water. Plus, sailing across the Maldives is relatively easy due to the small distances between the atolls.

Lastly, the Maldives offer a rich cultural experience. Each island has its own unique character and traditions. From bustling fish markets in Malé to the tranquil village life on the outer islands, you can soak up the local culture while enjoying the comfort of your own private yacht.

To sum up, the Maldives are more than just a postcard-perfect destination; they offer a dynamic blend of natural beauty, ideal sailing conditions, and rich cultural experiences, making them an outstanding choice for your next yachting adventure. Let Yachting.Rent help you discover the best of the Maldives.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Maldives

A sailing boat is a classic choice, offering a more traditional sailing experience. As you navigate the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, you’ll feel an intimate connection with the wind and the waves. Our sailboats offer a combination of performance, comfort, and elegance. This option is perfect for those who want to experience the thrill of sailing and don’t mind the boat’s lean during navigation.

On the other hand, a catamaran, with its two hulls, offers a different experience. The design provides stability, making it less likely to lean, which can be a real plus for those who are new to sailing or prefer more steady footing. Catamarans are also more spacious, offering ample deck space for lounging in the sun or enjoying meals al fresco. They are a fantastic option for families or larger groups.

In the Maldives, where the atolls are relatively close together, both sailing boats and catamarans are suitable choices. Sailing boats allow for a more adventurous journey, while catamarans offer comfort and stability.

Whether you opt for the charming grace of a sailing boat or the steady comfort of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent is here to ensure that your trip through the Maldives is a dream come true. With our range of options, expert advice, and impeccable service, you’re sure to find the perfect vessel for your adventure.

Chartering a Yacht in Maldives

Maldives has been considered as one of the most luxurious destinations in the world. With over 1000 distinct islands, you can definitely find the most ideal one for your holiday.  Travelers of all budgets are now welcome as the islands are finding new ways to increase tourism. Maldives has an incredible charm with its clear blue beaches, perfectly white sand, and great diving with an incredible underwater world. When one thinks of an image of paradise there is definitely an island in Maldives that will match it.

Renting a boat in Maldives is the ideal option for any adventurous traveller. With a catamaran, you can hop between islands and really explore the underwater world or just find a beach that really speaks to you. With its numerous islands, you can create a custom itinerary to be sure to fully appreciate the amazing marine life and stunning turquoise waters. A Maldives boat hire will make you fall in love with the beautiful scenery of the islands.

How much does it cost to hire a boat in Maldives?

The cost of hiring a boat in the Maldives is difficult to determine as it depends on the size and type of boat. One of the most popular boat types is the catamarans. If you are planning to charter a yacht expect to pay around 500€/day for a catamaran.

Boat availability in Maldives

The availability of boats depends on when you visit. It is highly advised to avoid the monsoon period which is from May to October. During this period there is a high chance of rain on the islands. However, the best months to visit the Maldives falls between November and April. Due to the popularity of the Maldives we highly suggest to book months in advance if you’d like to charter a yacht.

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in Maldives?

If you plan to charter a yacht in the Maldives you should have a valid boating license or sufficient experience in driving a boat. If you rent a boat in the Maldives there is an option to rent with a skipper. You can have a relaxing holiday by having a skipper as they are locals and have enough knowledge about the area.

Overview of Maldives

The Maldives consists of more than a 1000 islands located on the Indian Ocean. The unique landscape and the special features of the islands attracts thousands of visitors each year. The globally well known white sandy beaches, the shallow and crystal clear waters and the unique wildlife makes this country a bucket list destination. You can explore special fishes and corals that make it wonderful to snorkel there.

Even though the Maldives is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations, due to the high variety of resorts available. However, it became a must-see destination for sailors too! Given the possibility to discover uninhabited islands with unspoilt nature, it is no surprise that it receives tons of visitors.

Malé is the capital and the most populous city of the Maldives. Given the fact that the majority of the tourists arrive here, you should visit the city before departing to other islands. Malé has the biggest port in the country, so this can be an ideal starting point for your sailing holiday. Depending on the resort you choose, the sailing itinerary you plan and the length of your holiday, there is no wrong choice in which island you visit. All of them offer something very extraordinary that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world.

Let’s not forget that in all circumstances, we should protect the distinctive environment of the Maldives. The rich marine life, unique coral structures should be respected during sailing and during any water activity.

Practical information about sailing in Maldives

The easiest way to reach the Maldives is to fly to the Velana International Airport that is the main international airport. It is located on Hulhulé island, nearby the capital of Malé. Depending on which island in your final holiday destination, there is an option to take a boat or a hydroplane to continue your journey. Much like the Maldives, there are other locations that are very similar. For example, a yacht charter in Thailand is a perfect alternative for the perfect scenery. Alternatively, a catamaran charter in Seychelles would be a dream trip like the Maldives. For another exotic trip, rent a boat in Madagascar !

Click&Boat is a boat rental platform that gives owners the chance to return the investment on their boats, while also giving renters an amazing holiday experience for a competitive price. Browse our list of boats available to rent in the Maldives and find one that perfectly fits you, your family, your friends, and the amazing adventure that you want to have. After this, you can contact the boat owner in order to ask any questions and/or book your perfect Maldivian sailing holiday.

How much is it to rent a boat in the Maldives?

There are several different factors that determine the price of a boat, such as the size of the vessel, the time of year, or whether the boat comes with or without extras, such as a captain or crew. If you are searching for a boat rental in the Maldives, Click&Boat has some great options for you and your family!

If you are looking to jet off on a motorboat in the Maldives, rentals start from €1,600/day and go up to €49,000/day, whilst a trip on a catamaran costs between €500/day and €3,970/day. If you dream of chartering a sailboat, a boat with the capacity for 12 people with six cabins costs €3,343/day. This is a perfect opportunity to either relax or party the night away on the waves!

The Harbours in the Maldives

The main harbour in the Maldives is Malé North Harbour (MNH), which is located in Malé, the country’s capital. Many of our boats set sail from this harbour – we can’t wait to see you there for your Maldivian boat rental!

What is there to see in the Maldives?

There is definitely no shortage of water sports and activities to enjoy in this beautiful country! So, if you have extra time during your boat rental in the Maldives, here are some exciting options to explore:

• Tummy rumbling? Why not enjoy a meal at Ithaa Undersea Restaurant! As the name suggests, whilst you are eating your delicious food you will be able to look outside and see a multitude of different sea creatures. This is definitely an unmissable experience!

• After disembarking from your boat rental, make sure to relax on one of the Maldives’ stunning white-sand beaches. Some of our favourites are Hadahaa, Cocoa Island, Mudhdhoo beach, and Bikini beach.

• Book a tour to see the whale shark! Take a trip to see the world’s biggest fish and even get up close and personal with them.

• Visit the beautiful coral reefs. There are many ways to see them: snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking. However, the coral reefs are very sensitive so make sure to be careful when you get close to them.

• If you are a thrill-seeker, why not try out as many different water sports as possible? From banana boating to parasailing and kayaking to jet skiing, there really is an exciting option for anyone!

Rent a boat with a skipper in the Maldives

Many of the boat rentals in the Maldives include the option of hiring a skipper and/or crew. Whilst this may come at an extra cost, there is no doubt that it will enhance your experience. Having not only a professional but also a local onboard is a wonderful opportunity for you, your family, and friends to explore secret caves and sandy beaches that would otherwise go unexplored by tourists.

Renting a boat with a skipper will also provide you with a more relaxing experience, as they will take care of the sailing, as well as the docking and anchoring. You will be able to sit back, worry-free, and soak in the beauty of the Maldivian coastline.

What is the best time to go to the Maldives?

Although the weather in the Maldives remains warm year-round, with temperatures scarcely dipping below 25°C/77°F, the best time to visit the Maldives is definitely between November and April. This is due to the two distinct seasons in the Maldives. From May to October, the country experiences its wet season. So, if you fantasise about spending your holiday on the ocean, this is not the time to travel. On the other hand, the dry season (November to April) is a great time to rent a boat in the Maldives. At this time, there is a light breeze and very little rainfall, making it the perfect time to set sail.

How to reach

Given its proximity to Malé, Himmafushi is easy to reach. There are two main modes, scheduled/private speedboats or the local ferry. The speedboat is the fastest option and takes 20 minutes, while the ferry takes about 45 minutes. The public ferry leaves Malé at 1500hrs every day except Thursday when it leaves at 2230hrs. The boat departs from Himmafushi daily at 0800hrs every day and at 1800hrs on Thursday. Public ferries do not run on Friday. A one-way journey on this route costs $2. On the other hand, the speedboats travel three times a day from the airport and cost $10 per way. Their schedules change regularly, and tourists must pre-book speedboats. You should thus check for the latest timings closer to your date of arrival. A private speedboat costs $100 per way and can travel anytime during daylight hours. Whether private or shared, your guesthouse host can help make speedboat bookings for you in advance.

Transportation around Himmafushi

Himmafushi is small enough that even if you walk at a snail’s pace, it will take less than an hour to cover the entire island. Ambling around the island’s tiny lanes is also a fantastic opportunity to explore local life from close quarters. For those, who don’t fancy a stroll, most guesthouses offer bicycles for hire to their guests. The price of renting a bike for a day is usually around $5.

The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean, that spans across the equator. The country is comprised of 1192 islands that stretch along a length of 871 kilometers. While the country covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometers, only 298 square kilometers of that is dry land. The islands are grouped into a double chain of 26 atolls. The country’s unique geography mesmerizes the visitor. Reefs that offer bands of color, tiny jewel-like islands rimmed with the whitest of soft sand surrounded by the clearest shallow waters that one can imagine. Only 200 of the islands are inhabited, and a select few on each of the atolls are resorts and some of the islands are used for industry and agriculture. The beauty of the Maldives is not only above the water. The Maldives is home to about five percent of the planet’s reefs that comes with an explosion of color contributed by soft and hard corals that form them. The reefs are home to a thousand species of fish. Lured by the rich nutrients that flow in with the currents, large pelagic fishes such as manta rays and whale sharks also make the Maldives their home.

While very little is known about the ancient history of the Maldives scholars and historians believe that the Maldives is an old nation populated well over 2500 years ago. The Maldivian race is the result of several waves of settlement from various parts of the Indian subcontinent and thousands of years of interactions of people of different races and ethnicities that crisscrossed the Indian Ocean over several centuries. The country’s culture and traditions and the diverse physical traits of the people bear witness to the fact that the country was, due to its geographical location, a melting pot of people and cultures. The Maldivian language is Dhivehi, an Indo-Aryan language with its origins in Sanskrit. The most recent census in 2014 enumerated the population at 407,660 people. A third of the population lives in Male’, while the rest live in 200 island scattered across the length of the country. The livelihood of Maldivians traditionally depended on the seas, fishery being the main source of sustenance. While fishery still contributes significantly to the economy in terms of employment and income, tourism is the main source of income for the Maldivian economy today.

Although home to just over half a million people the Maldives has its own unique culture and traditions. While heavily influenced by various cultures around the rim of the Indian Ocean, the Maldivian culture, craft and traditions have been shaped by the island environment and the seas that surround us. Dhivehi is the language of the Maldivian people. Our current script, Thaana is unique and was developed from Arabic numerals around the 16th century. Maldivians are master boat builders. The traditional Maldivian boat, dhoni has been shaped over centuries, resulting in a craft that perfectly suits the various conditions of the seas. The traditional cuisine is heavily based on fish and coconut, with several dishes that have no parallels anywhere in the region. Our music and dance display strong influences of East Africa, Arabia and the Indian subcontinent. There is a rich tradition of Maldivian crafts; lacquered wooden ornaments, finely woven reed mats, and coral carvings are crafts that have been passed down through several generations. .

THE ENVIRONMENT

The Maldives has one of the most delicate environments anywhere on the planet. Coral reefs are the foundation of the islands. They offer protection to the tiny islands as its natural defense system, and the country’s economy depends heavily on the health of its reefs and ecosystems. Several conservation efforts are underway to protect the valuable marine environment of Maldives. While several marine species and birds are protected by law, protected areas have been designated to ensure the conservation of specific ecosystems and the rich biodiversity of the country. This includes designated nature reserves in islands of various atolls to protect wetlands and mangroves and the protection of marine areas and the designation of biosphere reserves that covers coral reefs, islands, sea grass beds and mangroves. Several resorts too conduct their own programs. While some programs conducted by resorts focus on the protection and rehabilitation of sea turtles, others are engaged in cutting edge research on regeneration of coral reefs. Several community education programs are also conducted by resorts for school children and the community at large. Non-governmental organizations also play an important role through their voluntary programs and conduct regular beach and reef clean up programs. Visitors to Maldives are advised to carry back their own non-biodegradable waste and to take care not to stand on, touch or remove coral structures while snorkeling or diving..

CONNECTIVITY

The Maldives is well connected with the rest of the world. Several flights from Europe, Middle East and South East Asia operate to Velana International Airport, the main gateway to the Maldives. The highest international traffic is from Colombo, Sri Lanka, various Indian cities and Dubai, while several scheduled and charter flights bring in passengers from all major European capitals, and South East Asian cities. Once in the Maldives you can travel to any of the twelve domestic and international airports to which several daily flights are operated. Scheduled ferry services also operate from Male’ to most of the atolls. If you are travelling to a resort, your transfer will most likely be prearranged at the time of booking your accommodation. Transfers to resorts around the airport are by speedboat and transfers to resorts and islands further afield are by seaplane.

I stayed at a luxurious overwater bungalow in the Maldives and a budget option. I had a great time for less than $100 a night.

  • I stayed at two different overwater bungalows in the Maldives at very different price points.
  • The expensive resort was nicer, but the beaches and ocean were equally beautiful at both places.
  • I found there's no need to spend $1,000 a night to sleep over Maldives' blue waters.

Insider Today

Early 2024 saw record-breaking increases in tourist arrivals to the Maldives, and I can see why.

The Asian country is beautiful, and after staying at two different overwater bungalows there, I learned you don't even need to spend thousands to have a luxurious vacation.

Here's how my stay at the high-end Conrad Maldives compared to my stay at the more affordable South Palm Resort — and why I don't think you need to spend thousands to have a nice overwater-bungalow vacation.

My first stay was at Conrad Maldives, which can get pricey.

rent a yacht maldives

First, I stayed at the ultra-luxurious Conrad Maldives.

The resort's overwater bungalows here usually cost a minimum of $700 per night before tax and service charges, but I saved on my stay by using Hilton free-night certificates I got from signing up and using the Hilton American Express credit card.

Since most Maldives resorts are on their own islands, we had to take a seaplane to the resort, which cost about $675 round trip.

The white-sand beaches at the Conrad Maldives resort were pristine and the water was so clear it sparkled. The natural beauty that made Maldives famous certainly didn't disappoint.

My room at the Conrad Maldives was spacious and luxurious.

rent a yacht maldives

I booked a villa with a pool but got upgraded to one with a jacuzzi. The villa had a comfortable king bed, a leather couch, and a large bathtub with an ocean view.

The room also had nice touches like soft bathrobes and a Nespresso machine.

Our jacuzzi was perfect for evenings but too hot during the day. I spent most afternoons scuba diving and using the resort's free kayaks instead.

The food at Conrad was expensive but good.

rent a yacht maldives

Again, since most of the resorts in Maldives are located on their own island, guests have to eat at their chosen resort throughout their stay.

Thankfully, Conrad Maldives has 12 restaurants and bars, from seafood at Sunset Grill to Chinese at Ufaa and Italian at Vilu. Even at the more reasonably priced restaurants that serve pizza, main courses cost at least $30.

One night, I had dinner at Sunset Grill, which sits on stilts over a coral reef with a great sunset view. I ordered a platter of grilled seafood, which, at the time, cost $295 for two people and included lobster and tiger prawns. It was simple but tasted fresh and well-prepared.

I was a Hilton Diamond member at the time of my stay because of my credit card, so I got free breakfast at Atoll Market, which helped me save money since Atoll's buffet costs about $60 a person.

I even splurged on a meal at Conrad's undersea restaurant, Ithaa.

rent a yacht maldives

There are other undersea restaurants around the world now, but Ithaa is said to be the original.

Although the food itself was good I don't think my meal was necessarily worth the over $300 I spent. Dining under the sea was definitely cool, though.

Later, I took advantage of a deal for South Palm Resort.

rent a yacht maldives

My second bungalow stay was at South Palm Resort, where an overwater villa without a pool can cost about $300 a night before taxes and fees.

Fortunately, I booked my stay for even less. My friend and I bought a Travelzoo deal that allowed us to pay $1,200 for a seven-night stay for two. Our package also included breakfast.

To get to South Palm Resort we took a Maldivian Airline flight to Addu City and a boat to the resort.

Since we could take a commercial flight, we only paid $400 per person to get to our resort. This was cheaper than the Conrad seaplane.

Although our room at South Palm Resort wasn't as luxurious as the one at Conrad, it was still spacious and nice.

rent a yacht maldives

Although the room's amenities were not as nice as what I experienced at Conrad — there was no bathtub or bathrobes and my room had instant coffee instead of a Nespresso machine — we didn't lack any necessities.

Plus, I just got my morning coffee during my free breakfast at the resort instead.

We did not pay extra to have a pool connected to our room and instead swam in the ocean. At one point, we even swam with a turtle right in front of our bungalow.

The beach at South Palm Resort is as beautiful as any, with soft white sand.

rent a yacht maldives

The beach here was just as beautiful and the water was just as clear as what I saw while staying at Conrad Maldives.

Plus, both resorts had at least one pool, free kayaks, and Jet Skis for rent.

Both have a dive center and a spa, although the ones at South Palm Resort were more basic. Still, this meant South Palm Resort's dives and massages were cheaper.

There are only a few restaurants at South Palm Resort.

rent a yacht maldives

The food I had at South Palm Resort wasn't as good as what I ate at Conrad, and we had fewer options.

South Palm Resort has two bars and one restaurant. Still, eating here was cheaper, with many entrées costing about $25. We enjoyed dishes like tandoori-chicken pizza from Moodhu Bar, which serves Eastern and Western cuisine.

I also liked that the buffet at the main eatery, Banyan Restaurant, had more Maldivian food than Conrad. I love trying what the locals eat when I travel.

After both stays, my takeaway is you don't have to spend a thousand dollars a night to visit the Maldives.

rent a yacht maldives

Unless your heart is set on a luxury resort , you don't need to spend $1,000 a night to sleep over the Maldives' crystal-blue waters.

I had a great experience at both hotels and each stay came with incredible views. Plus, both resorts offer snorkeling trips, dolphin cruises, sunset cruises, and fishing excursions.

Don't get me wrong — Conrad Maldives was the better hotel with nicer rooms and facilities, but if an overwater-bungalow stay in the Maldives has been on your bucket list, it may be more within your reach than you think.

My stay at South Palm Resort felt luxurious at a lower price point. Plus, the country has other similar resorts that are even more affordable with the same access to beautiful beaches and marine life — and there are always good travel deals to be found.

The journey time from the centre of Moscow to the airport using Aeroexpress is approximately 50 minutes and is the easiest way to travel from the centre of Moscow. A 24-hour minibus shuttle service operates between the Domodedovskaya underground station and the airport and takes approximately 15 minutes, while taxis are plentiful and take around 90 minutes from the centre of the city. It is strongly advised, though, to ensure that you use official taxis, and travellers should ask their hotel concierge to arrange the pick up for them. Spaces for more than 5,000 cars are available for both short and long-term parking, and a VIP parking area is located next to the international terminal. Arriving at Domodedovo International Airport Passengers flying from Moscow with Qatar Airways depart from Concourse A, which is part of the main terminal and is specifically for international flights. The terminal building itself is vast, so utilise the information boards to see which gate your flight is departing from. Facilities and amenities Meeting rooms are available for business travellers, while public lounges are open to all passengers. Wi-Fi is available for a fee and there are free Internet kiosks throughout the terminal, as well as mobile phone charging points. A children’s area keeps young travellers entertained, and there are also a surprising number of retail outlets selling very good quality goods and accessories. Duty Free outlets are available once you have cleared customs, and the food hall offers a wide selection of light snacks and more substantial meals.

Arriving in Maldives

Arriving in Hulhulé after a flight to the Maldives with Qatar Airways, the first thing that will strike you is that this genuinely is a tropical island paradise.

Largely unknown among tourists until the 1970s, the Maldives are today one of the top luxury destinations in the world. Crystal clear oceans, white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees – the Maldives are the epitome of a tropical holiday destination. The collection of over 1,100 coral islands means that the most common method of transport is by boat or seaplane. Island hopping is a great way to experience the delights above water.

Under the waves there is a second paradise waiting to be explored, and the Maldives offers some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. Tourist attractions

The Maldives is different to many destinations in that there are relatively few attractions to visit on land. The main attractions of the islands are natural, rather than man-made, so to discover the very best of the islands’ riches you will need to don a swimsuit and head out with one of the many diving parties to explore the coral reefs.

Filled with brilliantly coloured fish and a wealth of natural wonders, the waters of the Maldives offer a rich tapestry of aquatic colour and beauty. If you’re not a swimmer or prefer to stay on dry land then a visit to the nation’s capital island of Malé for some casual shopping and to see the ‘real’ Maldives away from the custom-made resorts of the islands. Travel Considerations

Flights to the Maldives with Qatar Airways land at Malé International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to the Maldives please check the visa and passport requirements.

Russians flee Turkey amid residency woes and rising costs

R ussians who left for Turkey after the invasion of Ukraine are now moving en masse to other countries. The reasons are difficulties obtaining residence permits and a lack of bank access. Reuters reports that "tens of thousands of Russians" have left the republic over the past year.

According to Reuters, tens of thousands of Russians who fled to Turkey after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine moved to other countries last year due to overwhelming residency issues and rising living costs. The agency spoke with nine Russians and also accessed statistical data.

Mass exodus of Russians from Turkey

When the war began in February 2022, Turkey, Russia's neighbor on the Black Sea and a NATO member, became a magnet for Russians. Some opposed the invasion, while others tried to protect themselves and their businesses from Western sanctions imposed on Moscow, including travel bans for Russians to much of Europe. Some men feared being drafted into the military.

According to official data, however, the number of Russians holding residence permits in Turkey dropped to 96,000 this month—a decline of more than one-third compared to 154,000 at the end of 2022.

Nine Russian citizens who spoke with Reuters stated that "they and others left partly because of difficulties obtaining residency permits." "Many have headed to Serbia and Montenegro, among the few European countries where they are welcome," the agency writes.

Russians are fleeing further due to rising costs—last month, inflation in Turkey reached 70%. Russian citizens also have trouble handling basic banking due to imposed sanctions.

Escaped partly to avoid mobilization

"You can't predict your future in Turkey," said 46-year-old Dmitri, an IT worker who declined to give his last name.

After Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced mobilization in September 2022 to recruit Russians to fight in Ukraine, Dmitri left St. Petersburg. He reunited with his wife and four-year-old son in Istanbul.

However, in January 2023, he received an SMS on his phone informing him that his residence application was rejected without explanation. A month later, Dmitri left Istanbul.

"I had signed a rental contract for one year but had to leave everything behind. We moved to Montenegro because it is economically and politically more stable than Turkey," he said.

Problems with legalizing residency and banking

The Turkish Presidency of Migration Management stated that all rejected residence permit applications include justification in the foreigner's language according to relevant regulations and that applicants are free to take legal action.

The email stated that "departures of Russians were not only linked to residency permits."

Although the Kremlin has not published any data on the departure during the war, the Danish Refugee Council's Mixed Migration Centre claims that since the invasion of Ukraine, about 800,000 Russian citizens have moved abroad.

Turkey, maintaining cordial relations with both Moscow and Kyiv, kept visa-free travel for Russians after the invasion and did not join Western sanctions against Russia.

Then Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Russian oligarchs—and their yachts—are welcome, but "must abide by international law to do business."

Alexeyev, instead, applied for a German "humanitarian residence permit" and has been living in Nuremberg for a year.

In the past two years, some wealthier Russians have obtained Turkish citizenship by buying homes worth at least $400,000 under a state program, surpassing Iranians and Iraqis, who were previously the largest foreign buyers.

"But bureaucratic troubles have proven too onerous for many," said 40-year-old Eva Rapoport. She worked for the "Ark Project," which helped Russians arriving in Istanbul with free housing and legal support. She also "joined the exodus from Turkey," Reuters writes.
