Charter yacht of the week: the 50m goddess of the Eastern Mediterranean, Ouranos

Each week we place a spotlight on one of the world’s finest superyachts for charter. This week BOAT steps aboard 50-metre Ourano s to discover why she is a marvel of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Since her delivery in 2016, 50-metre Ouranos has spent her days weaving around the Aegean Sea actively making her mark as a chief charter yacht in Greek waters. Her striking exteriors – are punctuated with six forward rectangular windows and vast feature windows amidships that span over two decks.

Ouranos, named after the primordial Greek god of the sky, is synonymous with the firmament and constellations. As her name suggests, most of her days are spent skirting along the Greek islands’ rocky shores, where her contemporary masculine profile naturally stands out.

Key Features

Conceived as the first of Admiral’s C Force series by The Italian Sea Group (TISG) , Ouranos was always destined to be a charter yacht and has proved her success thanks to her design, and hugely experienced Greek captain and crew. her striking – and aggressive – styling is by Jure Bukavec of Uniellé Yacht Design a young designer from Slovenia.

Having worked closely with the owner, the interiors of Ouranos are perfectly matched to her exteriors in terms of elegance and modernity. Neutral tones and ivory suede ceiling panels are combined with the occasional reflective material. The combination of the two contrasting finishes works in tandem to balance the feel of the spaces and work well with the huge amounts of natural light which flood the interiors.

Art was also an important consideration in the design, and now includes ornamental glass figurines displayed in cases – the result is a wonder of creative spaces, carefully positioned not to draw away from the yacht's surroundings.

Accommodation on board is for 12 across six cabins, including one vast master cabin, which is embellished with leather wall panels and a marble bathroom. The five lower deck cabins are connected not only by a staircase but also a glass-enclosed lift, which can whisk you up to the upper deck at the touch of a button. The upper deck is home to an exterior dining space and an enclosed upper deck bar aft. But walk through into the upper saloon and you’ll see the biggest impact of Oruanos’ vast windows as natural light beams into the space.

What is special about Ouranos ?

When it comes to looking for a Greek charter, Ouranos is certainly a seasoned pro – spending almost all of her time exploring these waters since her delivery in 2016, while also visiting Turkey and other parts of the Eastern Med. Few crews on earth could provide the same details on the Greek shores as that on board Ouranos .

The connection with the sea on board is a remarkable feature thanks to her design. But for those who would prefer to take the plunge themselves and spend their days frolicking in the Aegean, Ouranos has you covered. Two tenders reside on the foredeck and a 13.2 metre chase boat, the Omega 41 with a staggering 70 knot top speed.

Her collection of water toys is also highly impressive with jet skis, sea bobs, flyboards, e-foils and kayaks among much else. There is even a mini-submarine on board for shallow diving.

But for those who would prefer to lounge on board, part of the swim platform folds up to meet the sides, forming a balcony, a fantastic spot to laze by the water lapping just inches beneath you. The beach club also opens on all three sides, offering a further connection with the sea.

Why is Ouranos the perfect charter yacht?

Not only does Ouranos look the part, but she embodies the part of the perfect charter yacht in these waters. All spaces on board are bright open and contemporary and her deck space is enough to spend almost all of your days in the sun. She certainly won't pass unnoticed across the Med.

For those who want to do some real exploring, she has the speed (17 knots max), but also the comfort. Ouranos scored particularly highly in classification society RINA’s “comfort class” designation. An important consideration for the owner, this means guests can relax while underway with minimal noise and vibration.

OURANOS Yacht for Charter. Luxury Superyacht OURANOS was built and launched in 2016 by Admiral Yachts. She features a generous volume and can accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 well-appointed and stylish cabins with interior design by Gianmarco Campanino, all equipped with iPad entertainment system having access to satellite cable channels and extensive music & DVD library. Same for the salons and sundeck. Main deck, a foyer to starboard leads forward to a full beam master cabin and private study. Further guest accommodations are in the lower deck, in 3 double cabins and 2 twin cabins, all with en-suite facilities.

All guest decks are connected with an elevator, allowing easy access across all spaces. Communal areas include two large saloons surrounded by panoramic windows and the main and upper deck.  On the upper deck, a more casual approach offers a comfortable seating space, TV entertainment and complete wet bar aft. The trideck exterior styling is by Unielle Yacht Design, featuring plenty of spaces to enjoy. The main deck aft offers a generous sunlounge, partial shade and direct access to the main salon. Relaxation is enhanced thanks to a Jacuzzi on the sundeck, while multiple exterior spaces include a huge open beach club terrace aft, which incorporates a wellness hub that is home to a gym and massage corner. She has a professional and skilled crew of 12 who will take care of all details during the charter journey. The long list of water toys will allow guests to enjoy in full the day “yachting” day. Headed by Founder & Chairman Giovanni Costantino, The Italian Sea Group is one of the biggest conglomerate of the world for constructions up to 200 m, having built 575 ships and yachts since 1942.

Oceanis 38.1

The perfect compromise between comfortable cruising, fun and enjoyable handling. In the high season we recommend Oceanis 38.1 for families or couples, in the low season (autumn or spring) it is especially suitable for groups of enthusiastic sailors who like to trim sails and race with the wind. Just beware, some pieces have a classic mainsail, but others are furling.

Capacity and equipment

Sailing can accommodate 4 to 8 people , depending on how certified any particular boat is. Most have two or three cabins and one or two bathrooms. This is a medium comfort class, there are some limitations compared to staying at home, but it is not a significant loss of privacy due to the small space.

An additional gennaker sail can be rented for Oceanis 38.1 . If you are expecting rather lighter winds and still want a good sail, don't hesitate to ask our sales staff about this option. With a gennaker you will enjoy fun and quality sailing.

Where can you sail from?

Traditional destinations where you can find these boats include Croatia , Greece , Italy . But try, for example, sunny Turkey on the Oceanis 38.1 Summer Breeze or, on the other hand, northern Sweden on the Oceanis 38.1 Paganini , or get carried away by the beautiful shade of the sea on the Côte d'Azur with the Oceanis 38.1 Dvorak .

The most popular models

Beneteau's best-known brands include the cruiser Oceanis , the slightly sportier First and the sport-racing Figaro . Among the powerboats, the Flyer , Swift Trawler , Gran Turismo or Antares stand out. It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.
