7 Eco-Conscious Yachts That Are Changing the Future of Boating, From Zero-Carbon Catamarans to Hybrids

Pure-electric trawlers and hydrogen-powered sailing vessels sound like sci fi, but they'll be on the water soon..

Black Pearl is an eco-conscious sailing vessel signaling a new trend in yachting.

Yachting and sustainability may sound like a paradox, but we’re steadily seeing the marine world embrace eco-change. For the yachting world, there are an increasing number of ways to boat with a lower carbon imprint. From electric-diesel hybrids to zero-carbon catamarans powered by alternative fuel sources, here is a closer look at the newest eco-conscious yachts on the water—as well as several concepts that will be on the market in the next year, and a sailing vessel that helped start the emissions-reduction trend among superyachts.

Azimut Seadeck

green marine yacht builders

Having the world’s largest yacht builder embrace sustainability promises to exert pressure on hundreds of smaller builders around the world. When the three-model Azimut Seadeck  series is launched, the combination of complementary emissions-reducing technologies promises to be a major milestone for yachting.

“This is the most efficient yacht ever designed by Azimut,” said Federico Lantero, head of Product Design at Azimut/Benetti, at an event announcing the series. “We’ve identified the most recent technologies over the years, so we sat together said let’s raise the bar once again. Let’s push these technologies to the limits. It’s been like assembling a big puzzle.”

The Italian shipyard promises above-average efficiency at a wide range of speeds: The official estimates predict an emission reduction of 40 percent, thanks to Seadeck’s diesel-electric hybrid systems, lightweight carbon-fiber superstructure, solar panels, and other energy-absorption solutions.

Monaco-based designer Alberto Mancini, who penned the exterior, teamed up with other Italian designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez, who completed the sleek interior design. Thun and Rodriquez infused the interior with the newest sustainable materials, including cork, which they describe as the “best alternative to teak.”

The concept of Seadeck’s large open aft section—dubbed “Fun Island,” follows the success of the extended deck of sister builder’s Benetti Oasis. That design was a game-changer in its wellness-outdoor living approach. Azimut will release the Seadeck models in the next 20 months, starting with the Seadeck 6 in early 2024.

Alva Yachts Ocean Eco 90 H2

green marine yacht builders

In the past couple of years, German catamaran and sailboat builder Alva Yachts has turned heads with its innovative solar catamarans.  But now it’s pushing boundaries farther with the announcement of what it’s calling “the first zero-emissions superyacht catamaran to run without fossil fuels.”

The Ocean Eco 90 H2 is a special 90-foot version of the Ocean Eco 90 series, the shipyard’s flagship model. It comes in two versions: full electric and hybrid diesel-electric. The new model is the company’s first venture into hydrogen. Dubbed a “fuel-less superyacht catamaran with wings,” the H2 was requested by an existing Alva owner. It is powered only by sustainable sources, including the sun, wind, electric energy, and hydrogen fuel cells. The company’s signature solar cells generate up to 40kWp of power while twin performance electric motors give power, with the aid of the Ayro Oceanwings wind-propulsion system.

Oceanco ‘Black Pearl’

green marine yacht builders

The world’s biggest sailing superyacht— Black Pearl —is also the most sustainable boat on water. Energy is saved at every turn on board the 350-foot yacht, from the HVAC system to three carbon-fiber masts, striking black DynaRig sails and aluminum superstructure that combine to make the Oceanco yacht lightweight and efficient. Controllable pitch propellers feed power back into the yacht via a pair of shaft generators providing enough power to support the yacht’s hotel load. Equipped with battery banks and a waste-heat recovery system, the gigayacht is capable of sailing across the Atlantic using only renewable energy.

Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph

green marine yacht builders

Formula One champion Fernando Alonso so enjoyed his Greek charter aboard the Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph last summer that he now has a Sunreef 60 Eco in build. Equipped with electric engines, Marie-Joseph is fitted with nearly 1,800 square feet of solar panels integrated into the yacht’s composite structures, including the mast, boom, superstructure and hull sides. It’s enough to generate up to 45.5kWh, which leaves the deck areas free for guest enjoyment. In addition to the yacht’s “solar skin,” the vessel also has a hydro-generation system, which recovers energy from the propellers as well as high-efficiency batteries.

Steeler 61S Electric

green marine yacht builders

Designed by Vripack and built by Steeler, the 61-foot Steeler 61S Electric is a full custom electric trawler built for a liveaboard owner. Sustainable materials, such as steel, wood, leather and Flexiteek decking, give a nod to the owner’s determination to have a lighter carbon footprint—though the biggest sustainability breakthrough lies with the boat’s propulsion and slow-boating efficiency. Though equipped to run a 75kW diesel generator, the Steeler 61S Electric is also equipped with a 90kW electric motor and can run on shore power. In true Dutch style, solar panels and windmills mounted on the roof help feed the 184kWh battery pack.

Newcastle Marine ‘Safira’

green marine yacht builders

When it comes to sustainability, every little bit helps. Powered by azipod drives, which provide 20 percent more efficiency than conventional shafts, the 129-foot Safira can also run on 15-percent biodiesel. The boat is fitted with LED lighting and good insulation, which allows for smaller generators and reduced fuel consumption. Environmental considerations extend to the choice of materials as well, with reclaimed oak, remnant stone and Esthec—a synthetic replacement for teak—being used for both cabinetry and exterior decks.

Rossinavi ‘No Stress’

green marine yacht builders

Italian designer Enrico Gobbi’s latest project comes in the form of Rossinavi’s first hybrid yacht. Delivered earlier this month, the 169-foot, full-aluminum sports yacht, No Stress , is powered by two MTU 16V diesel engines and two electric motors. In electric mode, the dual power system is managed by an artificial intelligence (AI) system that monitors fuel consumption. No Stress forms part of the Italian shipyard’s aim to develop boats with BluE technology. In addition to more environmentally-friendly cruising, the inclusion of AI means the owners “can enjoy the electric experience on board to the fullest,” said Rossinavi’s COO Federico Rossi, in a statement.

The Italian yard recently launched another hybrid-electric “BluE” concept called Infinity , a sailing yacht with an exterior by Fulvio de Simoni. The 138-footer has solar panels that can be stored so that yacht can navigate in full-electric mode for 90 percent of an average day. De Simoni also penned Rossinavi’s Sea Cat hybrid cat, which is currently under construction.

Greener pastures.

By Tony Jones , Jul 28, 2016

It has been more than six years since PBB’s editor, Aaron Porter, and then technical editor, Bruce Pfund, visited Green Marine in Southampton, U.K., so now seems like a good time to update readers on recent developments in the shop.

To recap, Green Marine was founded in 1982. Since then it has built more than 180 composite boats, including some particularly high-profile race designs such as TP52s, Open 60s, Mini Maxis, multihulls, challengers for the America ’s Cup, and Volvo Ocean Race boats. Currently it is busy building America ’s Cup catamarans for Sir Ben Ainslie’s U.K. challenge.

In 2008, PBB visited the day after the company announced it was transferring construction of lifeboats for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), including its Lymington factory and associated workforce (representing roughly a third of the company’s business at that time) to the RNLI itself.

Green marine location

A sailboat hull outside the building hall at Green Marine.

Also since then, the company moved about 3 miles (4.8 km) from its previous location at Spitfire Quay to the other side of Southampton Water at Hythe Marine Park. The advantages of moving to a new, purpose-built facility were many, among them saying good-bye to the slight and somewhat unpredictable rise and fall of the factory floor as the tide ebbed and flowed. The new facility boasts 75,320 sq ft (7,000m²) of shop space; four 125 ‘ x 36 ‘ (38m x 11m) multipurpose build boxes, each featuring a 248°F (120°C) oven, spray booth, air filtration, and temperature control; two 148 ‘ (45m) extendable build bays; and a component shop with autoclave and four ovens (up to 33 ‘ x 26 ‘ /10m x 8m). The company’s latest addition is a 31 ‘ (9.6m) ex-aerospace autoclave capable of 100 psi (7 bar) pressure at a temperature of 392°F (200°C) and used for large fabrications such as bulkheads, keel parts, and rudders.

CEO Richard Acland says, “The new autoclave means we can pressure-cook more and larger components. We’ve had a small ’clave for many years; initially we used it for rudders, daggerboards, canards, and any other highly stressed components. But we soon reached the stage where we preferred to pressure-cook as many as possible. Also, the rudders and foils we were building were getting bigger, so a larger autoclave was the logical next step. In one go we have multiplied our autoclave capacity by a factor of 10. Not all of these are marine companies, so there’s a possibility of future diversification there.”

autoclave

The company’s latest equipment addition is an ex-aerospace 31′ (9.6m) autoclave capable of 100 psi (7 bar) pressure at a temperature of 392ºF (200ºC).

In recent years the average project size has increased, with greater emphasis on the 100 ‘ –120 ‘ (30m–37m) range, although 60 ‘ –70 ‘ (18m–21m) raceboats are still a staple. Beyond size, there have been significant technical developments as well, including mold technology.

Engineering director Geoff Stock says, “Although traditional wooden plugs are still used, CNC machining of high-density foam plugs is increasingly common. Direct female molds are also rapidly gaining favor, partly thanks to the existence locally of two of the U.K.’s premium CNC fabricators, MonsterCam and mouldCAM. We have made good progress with the perennial issues of core bonding, glue weight, and further reduction of void content. We now feel very confident in the honeycomb structures we produce in the autoclaves and the use of technology for placement of fibers.

“Another aspect of construction that has changed a bit is secondary bonding. We still use toughened and thickened epoxy resin, but whereas we used to mix our own—and had various recipes for different applications—we now purchase it in ready-mixed cartridges from specialist manufacturers.”

Apart from preferring light weight and performance, Green Marine’s clients are showing increased interest in reducing noise and vibration. This complex issue involves everything from material selection to advanced acoustics. The key to success is to carefully consider this aspect in the earliest phases of design. Adding quietness after the fact is difficult and inevitably involves adding weight.

On the business side, Acland says, “Racing yachts have always been very stop/go; it’s difficult to build a strong business based purely on this market. The RNLI boats were a surprising but fortuitous development for us; we were a small racing yacht company, and this new market for advanced-composite commercial craft was very welcome. A significant development was the growth in the lightweight-cruising-yacht market in the mid/late ’90s. It was fortuitous that demand for these boats emerged at about the same time as the RNLI build program started to slow down. For us, the first was a Tripp 88 called Shaman , followed by a Frers 92 called Stealth and then the Reichel/Pugh Leopard , and the Frers 106 Ulisse . Since then, we have specialized in the construction of carbon composite structures for super-yachts, and this has replaced the RNLI work as the most stable part of our business. When PBB visited us last, we were building Cinderella for the Vitters Shipyard; since then we have built another four yachts for them.”

Green marine sailing shot

Green Marine built the 108 ‘ (33m) Philippe Briand–designed Inoui for Vitters Shipyard to fit out. She has a carbon and Corecell P and M foam hull, and Nomex-cored deck.

Mindful of recent high-profile failures such as keels falling off long-distance ocean racers, I was interested to know if demands from highly competitive clients were putting pressure on builders like Green Marine to work closer to the limits of current materials and construction techniques.

“Structural engineers undoubtedly have a much better understanding of the limits of advanced materials and structures than previously,” says Stock. “It is now routine for there to be FEA [finite element analysis] of any critical components, and, as a result, materials are used in a much more efficient way; there is more confidence in the level of applied safety factors and therefore less parasitic material in a given component than there might have been in the past. Along with increased application of high-level structural knowledge has come a greater focus on accurate fiber placement, resin ratios, and low void contents. Overall, this results in more consistent safety factors, which to some extent translates into lighter yacht structures, but more importantly it means that critical components are less likely to break. Or at least, that’s how it should be.”

While a lot has changed at Green Marine since the last report, a lot has remained the same: primarily the company’s ethos. It might seem odd to use the word conservative in relation to the sort of advanced-technology boatbuilding done at Green Marine, but the company, while clearly open to new ideas, materials, and processes, appears commendably resistant to the fads that have led others to take unnecessary risks.

Vitters Shipyard Acquires Green Marine

By B. Roberts

Vitters Shipyard, located in the Netherlands, has purchased all shares in the composite yacht builder Green Marine in Lymington UK.

Green Marine was established in 1982 by Bill Green and Ian King who are now looking forward to the next step of the company's success. Green Marine gained fame in the yachting industry after racing their yachts Ran and Jethou . The respected UK builders specialised in composite projects; the yard also built a range of prize-winning Volvo Ocean and America’s Cup yachts, including the esteemed Mascalzone and Prada .

The shipyard has a respectable fleet which also includes well-known high performance yachts such as Sojana, Leopard, Ghost and more recently Cinderella IV .

Green Marine has stated that its experienced and dedicated workforce are “excited” that Vitters has become the new owner of the yard, ensuring they can continue to build on their impressive range of award winning yachts.

The company’s parts and components, manufacturing and R&D facilities are part of a planned expansion, all in order to provide Green Marine clients with state-of-the-art service throughout the takeover.

The new takeover of Vitters and Green Marine has already inspired plans to construct three yachts ranging between 60 and 140ft, currently being crafted in the UK. With Green Marine’s manifesto of creating high-quality racing yachts and hulls, the takeover by Vitters can only aid their climb up the market.

HUGO BOSS builder, Green Marine, goes into liquidation

  • Katy Stickland

Green Marine was involved in many of the world's leading yacht races, building custom boats for the Volvo Ocean Race and Alex Thomson's IMOCA 60, HUGO BOSS

The Black and white HUGO BOSS, which was built by Green Marine

HUGO BOSS in the 2016-17 Vendée Globe

The award winning Hampshire boat builder, Green Marine, has gone into liquidation, with the loss of 46 jobs.

The company is blaming a slow down in large orders for its demise.

Working from a state-of-the-art composite production facility at Hythe Marine Park near Southampton, Green Marine’s core business was building custom racing yachts, high performance superyacht hulls and lightweight components in carbon fibre composites.

The firm built Alex Thomson’s IMOCA 60, HUGO BOSS, which was launched in 2015.

It also was behind the deck mould and structure of Armel le Cleac’h’s Banque Populaire VIII, which won the 2016-17 Vendée Globe , and the hull shell of Maitre Coq, which took third place in the race.

Green Marine, which was bought by the Dutch boatyard, Vitters, in 2010, also built all of the Volvo Ocean Race ‘s VO65s, including Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Azzam, which won the 2014-15 race skippered by Ian Walker.

It also worked on Land Rover BAR’s America’s Cup test boat, T2, which was build in Green Marine’s sheds.

The boat builder was placed into Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation last Tuesday (3 October), and trading ceased last Wednesday (4 October).

The firm said that in the past 12 months, it lacked the large orders it needed to meet overheads and began to incur losses.

Insolvency specialist Peter Hall, who was instructed to place the company into voluntary liquidation, said it was an “emotional time” for the employees and directors of Green Marine.

“In the last three months the company was expecting a significant order, the hull and superstructure for a super yacht, which would have returned the company to profitability,” he said.

“Sadly, this failed to materialise in time. It highlights the issues facing companies which rely on a low number of very high value projects. It’s very much a family business so an incredibly emotional time for the directors and employees,” added Hall.

Established in 1982, Green Marine has built more than 180 composite boats, including the 30-metre Wally sailing yacht, Galateia.

Seven years ago, the firm moved from its premises in Lymington and Southampton (Spitfire Quay) to larger leasehold premises at Hythe Marina where substantial investment was made to enable the company to work on several large projects at once.

Victor Mallet

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

It is hard to think of a more visible manifestation of great wealth and excessive consumption than a superyacht, as Russian oligarchs have discovered to their cost, following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

As western governments began detaining these very obvious luxury assets at harbours and shipyards around the world in successive rounds of economic sanctions aimed at Moscow, the targeted billionaires directed crews to steer the vessels to safe havens such as the Maldives in the Indian Ocean or Turkey in the Mediterranean. Roman Abramovich’s 163-metre Eclipse, one of the world’s largest superyachts and estimated to cost more than $1bn, found refuge in the Turkish port of Marmaris.

Long before the latest Ukraine war, however, the superyacht industry faced a problem unrelated to any support the ships’ wealthy owners may have provided to warmongering authoritarian regimes: their impact on the environment and the impression they gave that the rich could not care less about climate change.

Most superyachts — typically defined as a leisure vessel more than 30 metres or 100ft in length — are essentially motor vessels like small cruise liners, catering to proprietors or charterers and a few pampered guests. The biggest have helicopter pads, swimming pools and gyms as well as luxury suites. Some even have mini-submarines.

Roman Abramovich’s 163-metre superyacht Eclipse

Very few are sailing yachts, and most of them consume vast quantities of diesel. Only now are manufacturers starting to develop new technologies such as hydrogen-powered electric propulsion that will cut emissions.

In the meantime, building the boats, operating them and, eventually, scrapping them all have a damaging effect on the environment. The same is true of aircraft and cars, but the very visibility of superyachts in tourist hotspots, makes their ecological footprint an increasingly sensitive topic. The global fleet has grown more than sixfold since 1985 to reach more than 5,200, according to Superyacht Times . And the fleet cruises the world’s vulnerable oceans.

“For sure, now it’s really high up the agenda — there’s been a fundamental shift,” says Monaco-based superyacht designer Espen Oeino, who reckons it is only in the past few years that most proprietors have really started to pay attention to yacht emissions. Clients ask him what can be done to reduce energy consumption onboard, both for propulsion and for the so-called “hotel load” of air-conditioning and other services, and even how to build the boat in the first place in a responsible way.

Norwegian superyacht designer Espen Oeino

Rob Doyle, another naval architect who designs superyachts and is based in Kinsale in Ireland, agrees that more owners are beginning to take notice of the need to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment, though many are still concerned about the cost. “There is still a huge amount of greenwashing,” he says. “You look at the magazines and you’ll never see a bad superyacht.”

Rob Doyle

And bad they often are. Research by anthropologists Beatriz Barros and Richard Wilk of Indiana University into the carbon footprints of the super-rich found that yachts contributed an outsized share of the carbon emissions of the billionaires who own them — far more than their private jets or mansions.

For former Chelsea Football Club owner Abramovich, for example, of the 31,200 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent he is calculated to have emitted in 2018, no less than 22,400 tonnes came from his yachts. Yacht emissions for Bernard Arnault, owner of LVMH and France’s richest man, accounted for nearly 9,000 tonnes of his total of 10,400 tonnes.

There are other ways for the wealthy to be embarrassed by their superyachts. Dutch shipyard Oceanco is facing resistance from angry locals after asking the city of Rotterdam to temporarily dismantle the old Koningshaven Bridge so that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s new three-masted vessel — this one is a sailing yacht costing hundreds of millions of dollars — can reach the port and the open sea.

Bernard Arnaud’s luxury yacht Symphony

But the impact on the climate is still the environmental whale in the room for yacht owners, builders and designers: Bill Gates and Elon Musk are both big carbon emitters, but their 2018 numbers were much lower than those of their fellow billionaires because they did not have yachts, the Barros-Wilk paper showed.

The accelerating effort to green superyachts reflects similar moves in the aircraft and vehicle industries to adopt new technologies and systems that help to reduce or eliminate carbon emissions and other pollution.

For superyacht designers and builders, the process starts with the shape of the hull or hulls, because there are few things so wasteful of energy as pushing a heavy metal or composite vessel through a fluid as dense as water. For both Oeino and Doyle, this search for what Oeino calls the “geometry of an easily driven hull” means looking at multihulls (catamarans or trimarans) for the next generation of big yachts, because they are designed to skim along the surface of the sea rather than laboriously plough through it, even if there are obvious constraints on weight and what you can do with the interior space.

A draughtsman’s weight

Next, propulsion. There are already diesel-electric boats in service, which use diesel generators running at optimum revolutions (more economical, less polluting) to power electric motors, and, in future, the idea is to run the electric motors with the output from hydrogen fuel cells.

Then there is the electricity needed for the yacht’s hotel load, principally air-conditioning and the making of fresh water from seawater, but also lights and other electrical systems. Solar panels can produce some power but rarely enough even to run a present-day superyacht at anchor, so to charge batteries and run the boat, some other form of carbon-free electricity generation is needed to replace the diesel generators widely in use today.

For Barros and Wilk, none of this can justify owning any kind of superyacht. They write: “While many billionaires have taken pro-environmental actions in their personal lives or their corporate connections or donate money to climate change organisations and purchase carbon offsets, none of these actions actually ‘cancels out’ their total emissions. A 90-metre yacht can be touted as energy efficient or environmentally friendly but, as critics of ‘eco-chic’ point out, it is still a huge waste of resources, a frivolous luxury in a warming world.”

But the industry is trying. Doyle’s answer, developed by his own firm and Van Geest Design, is Domus (“home” in Latin), a project for a 40-metre sailing trimaran described as “the first truly zero-emission yacht” over 750 gross tonnes, which would generate electricity to charge its batteries from solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells and its own propellers acting as dynamos when the boat is sailing.

“It came out of a conversation we had with a client,” says Doyle. “We proposed this project with fuel cells, and regenerative sailing. It’s silent . . . people just want to listen to the water and the wind coming across and not have the hum of generators or the whiff of diesel.”

People just want to listen to the water and the wind coming across and not have the hum of generators or the whiff of diesel Rob Doyle, yacht designer

Hydrogen propulsion is in its infancy for mass transport. The gas is difficult to store, though it can be made from methanol, and there is, as yet, no distribution network for the fuel. But the interest in hydrogen is just one sign of how the yacht industry is hunting for ways to lower emissions in the years ahead as the pressure from regulators — and public opinion — increases.

Oeino notes that in some places, including the World Heritage Site fjords such as Geirangerfjord in his native Norway, rules limiting emissions are already in place and becoming stricter, and will help to force the pace of the greening of ships and yachts.

The first systems for big yachts to be fully powered by renewables are likely to be the tenders, the smaller boats that ferry people to and from the shore, which are already starting to shift to electric propulsion, and the equipment that contributes to the hotel load when the ship is stationary. Hotel loads can, in any case, be reduced by sensible design and operation, given that indoor superyacht spaces are heavily air-conditioned all the time despite owners and guests spending a huge amount of their time outside, on deck.

Transocean travel with zero emissions is a much bigger ask, says Oeino. “A lot of stuff is already being implemented, but the full electric big yacht with zero emissions is still not a reality,” he explains, because it is impossible to store or produce enough energy onboard.

“It will be a combination of things that will bring us all to lower emissions and eventually zero emissions.”

‘Yachts for science’ can be a breakthrough for explorers

A yacht

For yacht owners who feel guilty not only about their environmental footprint but also about how little they use their expensive boats, Rosie O’Donnell has the perfect solution: Yachts for Science .

YFS, which its co-ordinator O’Donnell describes as “a dating agency, almost like a Tinder for the sea”, is a platform to match idle yachts and their crews with scientists in search of a vessel that can reach remote areas and allow them to research everything from coral reefs and manta rays to great white sharks. In some cases, the owners and their families like to be on board for the ride.

“It’s for people who want to be a bit philanthropic so they have got something more to talk about than sitting on the back of their boat in St Tropez drinking cocktails,” says O’Donnell. “It’s about making the ownership more worthwhile.”

The idea of YFS fits with the trend among yachtowners to commission robust so-called expedition or explorer yachts that can travel long distances, to the Antarctic for example, rather than being satisfied with something that will buzz at high speeds around the resorts of the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.

“The yachting industry is always looking for ways to reinvent itself,” says Dominic Byrne of Arksen Marine , a builder that backs YFS and is building a new range of high-tech motor yachts. “People are looking to go further afield, and they are looking to do it in an eco-friendly way as much as possible.”

Greene Marine History

"No signs indicate the presence of the boatyard, but observant motorists looking downriver behind the Muddy Rudder Restaurant catch a glimpse of the bright colors and tall masts that indicate the presence of some of the fastest ocean racing sailboats in the world." - Maine Times, Edgar Allen Beem

Greene Marine began in 1978 with the building of Walter Greene's trimaran design Acapella. Walter and his wife Joan raced this boat in the 1978 Round Britain race, coming in 1st in class and 4th overall. Later that year, Canadian Mike Birch sailed Acapella (renamed Olympus Photo) to a first-place win in the first Route du Rhum trans-Atlantic race (France to Guadalupe), and Walter's reputation as a multihull designer was firmly established.

In 1980 the Greenes (Walter, wife Joan, and sister Esther) opened a shop on the Cousins River in Yarmouth, Maine. That was also the year that Philip Weld sailed the Moxie, built by Walter Greene at Handy Boat, to become the first American to win the Observer Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race (OSTAR). Greene-designed and built boats also took 3rd, 4th, and 5th place overall in the 1980 OSTAR. The fifth-place boat was skippered by Walter.

In 1981, the first Two-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race (TwoSTAR) saw 6 Greene entries, with Greene boats winning two first-in-class and coming in 3rd, 7th, 13th, and 15th overall.

One of Walter's most famous boats was Sebago, which was sponsored by Sebago shoe company. Multihulls magazine stated in 1984,

"Besides manufacturing an excellent product, Sebago will go into the record books as the first large U.S. company to sponsor a competitor in a major ocean-racing event..."

Sebago placed 4th in class in the 1984 OSTAR and 1st in class/7th overall in the 1985 Round Britain race, among other races.

Races in which Greene boats have won or placed include the OSTAR, TWOSTAR, Route du Rhum, Round Britain, Yarmouth Cup, and Monhegan Cup. Walter has also had a hand in boats that have set records for solo and non-stop circumnavigation, such as American Promise.

Greene Marine built 36 test tank models approximately 22' to 24' in length. Seven were for Bill Koch's Matador 2 (maxi boat), and the rest for three America's Cup campaigns from 1992 to 2000.

Greene's cruising multi-hulls have also been very popular. His design for a coastal cruiser catamaran, the Even Keel 35, has been built by Greene Marine and several owner/builders. The most adventurous sailed to Australia where it is continuing its life as a coastal cruiser.

Walter has designed boats for racers and cruisers, but far more people have gone on the water on his boats for Coast Guard certified day charters, in both sail and power.

Other fascinating projects have included a Sebago Dockside shoe boat (in red, white, and blue), and a space shuttle, mega-globes, and other structures for the Children's Museum of Maine.

Greene is a long-time member of the Maine Boatbuilder's Hall of Fame and a recipient of the first NEMA Outstanding Achievement Awards. Presenting the NEMA award, ocean racer Philip Steggal remarked:

"What can you say about Walter? Guru comes to mind… Walter larger than life Greene…Walter don’t let him buy the food for the race Greene…Walter not a slave to fashion Green...Walter the costeffective solution Greene… I’ve never met anybody who could get more out of a dollar to make a boat go faster than Walter Greene. He has an innate art for dragging the last few percent out of a bucket of resin, or a pound of fiberglass, or a kilo of carbon. Today I’m dealing with PhDs in the composite business ona daily basis, but when I want to know the real deal, I call Walter. If I give him a laminate sample, out comes the knife and the hammer, and right away he knows all about what’s in it, how it went together, and if it will work. "Walter build me a boat that can sail the ocean Greene… Over the years that I’ve know him, all of his boats have had a superb functionality… and these aren’t just bay boats, but ones many of us have crossed the ocean in. "He's truly one of the original thinkers. He believes there is a better shape for the wheel than round - if only he can think of it. He has not only the power to think in dimensions that are different from those the rest of us experience, but also the ability to come up with the end solution. "He brings life and enjoyment to everyone he knows. He is the richest man I know; he’s a true follower of his own dreams and has no hidden agendas."

Over the course of nearly 40 years, Walter Greene has built or worked on more than 150 boats, in wood, epoxy, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. Racing and cruising boats, single or multihulls, USCG-certified boats, shoe boats or space shuttles - Greene Marine provides brilliant solutions of excellence for any project.

10 green practices for recreational boaters

Ivonne Gamboa

May 13, 2024 // By Ivonne Gamboa

By Ivonne Gamboa May 13, 2024

Green boating ensures generations to come can enjoy our natural resources

Recreational boaters share a deep love of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Alongside the joys of exploration, boaters are responsible for protecting and preserving these natural resources for future generations.

During the Palm Beach International Boat Show , voted among the best boat shows in the country, The International SeaKeepers Society , along with the Water Revolution Foundation and Ethical Yacht Wear , spoke to boating enthusiasts about how they can be good stewards of the marine ecosystems they enjoy.

Here, we share 10 best green boating practices for becoming environmentally conscious on the water.

Advertisement Advertisement

Support at-sea research

Donate time on your boat to further marine wildlife research

Imagine being part of groundbreaking scientific discoveries while enjoying your time on the water. By offering your boat as a floating platform for scientist-led expeditions with world-renowned scientists, you can help advance marine research.

SeaKeepers offers boaters and "yachties" the opportunity to participate in these invaluable experiences by matching you with a project designed to fit your type of boat, location, and interests. You can apply for this opportunity by filling out a DISCOVERY application .

Become a 'citizen scientist'

You don’t need a Ph.D. to contribute meaningfully to marine research. You can participate in marine research projects by collecting data independently while on the water. Your observations could help scientists better understand and protect marine ecosystems.

Organizations like SeaKeepers offer citizen science opportunities that allow you to collect valuable data, such as mapping the ocean floor or monitoring microplastic samplings. You can become a citizen scientist no matter where you live; data contributions are welcome from boaters worldwide.

Reduce single-use plastics and other plastic pollution

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature , plastics comprise about 80% of all marine debris. Green boating means taking proactive steps to reduce single-use and other plastics on your boat so they never reach the water.

Plenty of eco-friendly alternatives are available, from using products like the Cora Ball to capture microplastics in laundry to installing water makers to refill bottles and cups with fresh water. If a water maker isn't feasible on your boat, companies like Open Water offer water in infinitely recyclable aluminum bottles.

Educate the next generation of green boating

Your boat can become a floating classroom

Inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by allowing students to join “floating classrooms” led by marine educators on your boat. By donating time on your vessel, you support marine education initiatives and help expand learning opportunities.

SeaKeepers welcomes boats of all sizes. With chapters in the United States, the United Kingdom, the South Pacific, and Asia, the organization partners with boat owners worldwide through its educational outreach program .

Choose marine-safe products when you're on the water

Choose marine-safe and sustainable products while on the water to reduce your impact on marine wildlife. Boaters can opt for non-toxic cleaning products, like Ecostore Boat Wash , and mineral sunscreen and skincare products, like Stream2Sea , which are less harmful to vital ecosystems.

Respect Marine Protected Areas

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) serve as vital sanctuaries for marine life, preserving precious ecosystems and biodiversity. To prevent unintentional intrusion, take time to understand the boundaries and regulations of local MPAs. By respecting these designated zones , you contribute to safeguarding critical habitats, ensuring marine life can flourish undisturbed.

Protect marine life

Adhere to fishing regulations while on the water

Beyond respecting MPAs, you should always obey any signs posted on the water to avoid harming local ecosystems or running aground and damaging your boat. Adhering to local, state, and federal regulations while fishing will also minimize your impact on local ecosystems.

Stay on top of boat maintenance to prevent marine pollution

Proper boat maintenance is essential to prevent marine pollution. Green boating tactics include regularly checking your fuel lines, seals, and joints for damage to avoid leaks that could harm marine life. Dispose of grey and blackwater waste responsibly. SeaKeepers’ A Green Guide to Boating provides valuable tips for maintaining your vessel and minimizing your environmental footprint while on the water.

Engage the community in cleanup efforts

Find an organization near you that organizes shoreline cleanups

Marine debris affects the health of wildlife, people, and local economies. Wildlife can mistake debris in the water or on the shore for food or get entangled in it with lethal consequences. You can mitigate these risks by seeking out organizations that host community shoreline cleanups .

While doing community cleanups, you can collect data supporting policy and scientific research by documenting findings on applications like the Marine Debris Tracker .

Become an advocate of green boating

Educate yourself about marine conservation issues in your area and become an advocate for marine environments. Get involved in conservation projects. By raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts, boaters can significantly impact the protection of our oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Boaters are uniquely influential in safeguarding our waterways for future generations. By embracing these 10 practices, you can mitigate your environmental impact and contribute to preserving and restoring marine ecosystems. Together, we have the power to make a difference, one responsible boating practice at a time.
