Top 6 Hidden Gems on a Tuscan Yacht Charter

During your Tuscany yacht charter holiday, enjoy the wild havens and hidden gems of the Tuscan Archipelago. Here are 6 essential 'must see' attractions ot consider on your Italian private yacht charter holiday.

To get you in the mood for a vacation of a lifetime, let’s begin with:

1. Elba’s towns

Spend the night on your luxury yacht at anchor close to the beautiful Porto Azzurro. Get up bright and early so you can head over to Capoliveri for some retail therapy. Capoliveri has a good number of charming shops specialising in quality goods for acquired tastes. After a little shopping, dine at La Taverna dei Poeti, a quaint local restaurant. Try the tuna burger starter and the Gragnano paccheri pasta with grouper, it’s delicious.

2. Pianosa Island

This tiny island, located southwest of Elba, was once a penal colony. It was also the place of Napoleon’s exile in 1814-1815. Elba’s inaccessibility has saved it from mass tourism. The diving here, with authorised guides, is quite unique. You’ll be able to see things like redfish, grouper and molluscs that you won’t find in other places. What’s more the water is absolutely sensational.

3. Sansone Beach, Elba

If you want to spend a fantastic night at anchor on your charter boat then take a refreshing dip at sunrise, the beautiful cove at Fetovaia, Elba, is the place to be. For a much more secretive and secluded, yet equally spectacular spot on Elba, you can’t beat Sansone Beach. It’s an inviting, enchanting white pebble cove with steep white cliffs. Sansone Beach is simply one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.

4. Giglio Island

No yacht charter vacation to the Tuscan Archipelago would be complete without visiting Giglio Island. Here you can enjoy drinking the best cocktails in Il Demino at Demo’s Hotel on the beach right next to Giglio Port. Being right on the water’s edge, why not pass a night on the terrace waiting for sunrise drinking a margarita or two?

5. Caldane Beach, Giglio

Caldane Beach is one of the most stunning and private beaches on Giglio. You can only arrive onto the beach by boat or on foot. It can also be quite a wild beach so a little choppy from time to time. Take a swim in the blue crystal-clear waters before relaxing on the beach and topping up your tan.

6. Capraia Island

For something a little different on your yacht charter holiday, how about a trekking or bike tour on Capraia Island? Have you got what it takes to complete the Percorso dello Stagnone, The Stagnone Path? The trail begins by the church in the village of Capraia, climbing up the mountain before descending towards the harbour. In the spring time, you can see rare orchids, wild flowers and herbs. After completing the Percorso dello Stagnone, it’s reassuring to know that you can then return to your superyacht charter vessel for a relaxing, soothing massage.

Tuscany Yacht Charter

Tuscany is renowned for its natural beauty, rich history, artistic legacy, and impact on world culture. Charter a yacht in Tuscany , a place that had laid groundwork for both the Italian Renaissance and the Italian language and explore its architectural and cultural wonders . Due to its strong identity, Tuscany is frequently referred to as "a nation inside a nation".

Sail the Tuscan Archipelago, a legend says that it originates from a necklace that Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and sensuality, lost while emerging from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The archipelago consists of seven islands: Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri, and Gorgona . The seven islands are in fact seven pearls the goddess was unable to retrieve.

Why is Tuscany Popular Among Sailors?

Tuscany can thank its popularity to the magnificent coastline, gorgeous sandy beaches, pleasant temperature, and some of the greatest diving in the Mediterranean. The west coast of Italy is a fantastic spot to sail since it is packed with marinas and large harbours with a full variety of amenities . While Tuscany is renowned for its culture, delicious cuisine, and picturesque landscapes, it also features some of Italy's top sailing spots.

Tuscany Sailing Region - Elba Town

The Island of Elba  is another cult yacht charter destination and a superb sailing ground for an Italian yacht holiday. Famous for its gorgeous beaches and fantastic flora and fauna, Elba is geologically midway between mainland Italy and Sardinia making it a prime boat rental spot. There are plenty of marinas to anchor at, as well as beaches and anchorages . One of the most popular aspects of those on sailing holidays around the Island of Elba is the numerous coves sheltered from the wind , like the beautiful cove at Fetovaia and Sansone Beach.

The best places to charter a yacht in Tuscany and start exploring the archipelago is from marinas like Cala de Medici in Castiglioncello , Punta Ala , Scarlino , Follonica , San Vincenzo , Talamone , Porto Ercole , and Cala Galera . Tuscany is also an ideal departure point for sailing to Corsica (50 NM) and Sardinia (110 NM).

Yacht Charter in Tuscany Sailing Region

Tuscany, a region in central Italy, known for its history and influence on high culture , is a perfect sailing destination for all art lovers and romantics. Start your sailing holiday in the well-positioned city of Viareggio , the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea”, where you can enjoy long beaches and local cuisine. Not far from there is the famous Pisa, whose Leaning Tower is on every tourist’s bucket list.

The capital of Tuscany, Florence - the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, is full of architectural and cultural wonders to explore on your Tuscany holidays while indulging in authentic gelato. When you are done sightseeing, set the sails of your charter yacht to Portoferraio on Elba, the largest island of the archipelago, which can be easily reached on board your bareboat or skippered Tuscan boat rental . There, you can go hiking, scuba-diving, visit Napoleon’s homes, or just relax on postcard-perfect beaches.

The marinas are open all year round in Tuscany, but the best months for a sailing holiday are April, May, June, September, and October : it is not so hot and crowded, so it is possible to find isolated anchorages.

During the summer, the weather in the Tuscan Archipelago is warm and breezy. However, the route is recommended to experienced sailors due to thunderstorms and strong winds that come from the north and west. Sailors should also be wary of underwater tides and rock formations. Keeping this in mind, opting for skippered yacht charter in Tuscany is a good idea.

Tuscany and Islands Sailing Region - Elba Porto Ferraio Town

Best Places to Visit in Tuscany Region

While Tuscany is usually known for its culture, magnificent food and beautiful countryside, a Tuscany yacht charter also gives you a chance to sail in some of the Italy's best sailing areas.

Starting off with Castiglioncello , a gem of the stunning Etruscan Coast and one of Tuscany's most enchanting beach towns. The magnificent Pasquini Castle, constructed in the late 1800s, is located there. Castiglioncello is adored by many yachtsmen for its red cliffs plunging into the sea, its sheltered coves, beaches and pools of crystal-clear water.

Best Places to Visit in Tuscany Sailing Region - Punta Ala

Cecina is a town which boasts an intriguing archaeological museum and exciting water parks, as well as the old San Vincenzo, home to fine wines and a tower that served as an observation post to protect the coast from pirates in the past.

A town well-known for mining and trading in iron, Baratti , is encircled by ancient walls constructed as a barrier against pirate invasions. This hidden treasure is in a captivating seaside location, complete with a fortification from the fifteenth century and a museum filled with Roman and Etruscan relics.

Scarlino is a medieval village situated on the slopes of Mount Alma. Sailors know it best due to the marina di Scarlino, one of the safest and best protected marinas to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean.

Another popular seaside destination, Viareggio , is noted for hosting the renowned carnival of Viareggio, which dates to 1873, and its papier-mâché floats, which have been parading along the "Passeggiata a mare" promenade since 1925.

Charter a yacht in Tuscany and explore its magnificent islands. Island of Elba is the largest of the seven islands in the Tuscan Archipelago. The main town is Portoferraio, a small town created by the Medici family and Napoleon’s residence when he reigned briefly over the island in 1814. The northern coast has a large inlet made up of three famous bays – Enfola, La Biodola e Procchio – which are traditional seaside spots.

Capraia is an ancient extinct volcano with large wilderness and wonderful landscapes which captivate tourists. It has mostly rocky coastlines that dive down into the sea. There are also some stunning anchorages including Cala Rossa, famous because you can see the crater of the volcano.

Giannutri is an untouched island with its natural landscape preserved intact. There are no towns, no marinas, and no facilities. You can truly enjoy the island only for yourself. The east and west areas of the island are protected areas, intended to preserve the unique landscapes. Only 300 visitors are allowed to enter the area each day. Tickets must be purchased, and visitors are accompanied by a park warden or environmental guide.

Sailing conditions in Tuscany:

Tuscany enjoys a Mediterranean climate with almost 300 days of sunshine per year. Summers are hot and dry with temperatures over 25 degrees Celsius from June through to September. In winter, the climate stays mild but there can be important variations between the coast and inland. Prevailing wind in summer blows moderately from the west-northwest. Around Elba, winds tend to blow from the southeast and alternate with calmer periods. Spring and the beginning of autumn are the perfect seasons for a cruise in Tuscany as temperatures are pleasant, nature is flowering and colours are sumptuous.

Tuscany isn't just rolling patchwork fields, red wine and stunning Renaissance cities. Tuscany also has an archipelago of seven islands that are simply beautiful with golden sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and a character coastline with plenty of lovely anchorages. Don't worry, it still has plenty of amazing food and wine to sample too! While Venus of the Tyrrhenian Sea was rising from the waters, she dropped seven pearls from the necklace adorning her neck. These pearls became the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Elba, Gorgona, Capraia, Giannutri, Giglio, Montecristo and Pianosa. Protected as the Tuscan Archipelago National Park (1986), the largest marine park in Europe, it is a lovely place to sail and discover a side to the country that many outside Italy don't even know exists.

What makes the Tuscany so Special

Character Tuscan Islands

There are seven Tuscan islands in total but only three have unrestricted access; Elba, Giglio and Capraia. Giannutri can also be visited by paying a €4 entry fee. Elba is the largest island of the group and has a array of picturesque towns and villages to discover, while the remaining islands each host one or more charming Tuscan villages.

Golden sandy beaches

The Tuscan islands are blessed with a wide selection of golden sandy beaches, particularly on the islands of Elba, that are rated as some of Italy’s very best. Spend your days anchored off a beautiful beach, swimming ashore to visit an Italian restaurant or to just relax on the shore.

Stunning quality boats

Seamaster boasts an exclusive fleet of modern yachts in the Tuscan Islands. We offer quality monohulls and catamarans to suit all preferences and budgets, including a wonderful luxury range. Ask us about the boat will suit you best, we’re here to help.

 Exclusive Seamaster crew

To get the most out of the Tuscan Islands you’ll opt for a Seamaster Tuscany yacht charter with a skipper. Our crew, including skippers, hosts and cooks are the best English-speaking professionals in Italy and they are looking forward to sharing their country (and cuisine!) with you.

  • 1 Week - Tuscan Islands Route

Many see Piombino as just a starting point for their holiday, however the town has much more to offer than initially meets the eye. The historical centre is a perfect size to explore on foot and offers places such as the gate of St. Antonino which dates back to 1200.

Giannutri has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and Romans later built the first harbour. The island is extremely popular with scuba divers and is well worth visiting if you like snorkelling too. The island only has an area of 2 square kilometres but the coasts are filled with fascinating coves

This island is an enormous mass of grey granite covered with deep-green vegetation. Its steep coastline alternatives with small beaches. The whole island is extremely well kept thanks to the locals being so proud of their island. We’d recommend visiting the fortified village at the top of the island.

If you didn’t get the opportunity to visit the town centre on your first evening we would recommend taking the time to visit. Within the old town there are several good restaurants which are worth visiting. After dinner you could go and explore with Plazzo Comunale (Town Hall) which is adjacent to the Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower).

Where are our bases?

We have two bases that serve the Tuscan Islands of Italy – Castiglioncello and Puntone. Puntone is our primary base and is the better located of the two. It is situated just outside the town of Follonica, on the Tuscan coast. It is a small modern marina with lots of amenities and is easy to reach from either Pisa or Rome. Castiglioncello is located south of Livorno on the Tuscan Coast. While closer to Pisa, it does mean a longer sail to get to the islands and therefore seen as not desirable.

How to get there?

The primary way to get to our bases in Tuscany is via Pisa Airport. You can also reach the Tuscan coast (particlarly Follonica) from Rome, though it does take a bit longer. For some reason, transfers are very expensive in Italy so we recommend taking the train to both our bases. Puntone is reached by taking a direct train from Pisa Centrale to Follonica and then a short taxi ride to Puntone Marina (Marina di Scarlino). It should take an hour and a half or so.

What wind and weather should I expect?

The weather in the Tuscan Islands is typically Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers bringing temperatures in the early 30s throughout the peak season of July and August. During May and September expect temperatures in the mid 20s. During the summer months the prevailing wind is west – north westerly and it rarely reaches gale force. Around Capraia, Elba and down the mainland coast to Giannutri there will often be south east winds with frequent periods of calm. At night there is often a light west or south west breeze.

How much are mooring fees?

As with the rest of Italy, moorings fee are not insubstantial though there are plenty of free anchorages around, especially on the island of Elba. Budget upwards of €400 for your weeks’ mooring, though this can been reduced by anchoring in the many idyllic bays on offer. On Elba check out Cala Bagnaia, Cala di Mola, Golfo Stella, Golfo della Lacona and Golfo di Procchio.

What qualifications do I need?

Charterers in Italy need a minimum of an RYA Day Skipper. We recommend having an ICC certificate (International Certificate of Competence). If you are in any doubt, please contact Seamaster and we will advised you or even get pre-approval.

The best time to sail in Tuscany is between April and October, considering that July and August can be the hottest months and also the peak season with more crowds.

During the summer, winds of 8-12 knots usually blow from the northwest. There are plenty of protected harbors, anchors and bays, although you have to pay attention to the tides and underwater rocks.

At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motor boat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Tuscany

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Tuscany below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Tuscany it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Tuscany you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Tuscany

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Tuscany. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Tuscany, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Follonica, Tuscany

Our bases in Tuscany are well placed to explore the fantastic Tuscan archipelago, seven islands just off the Tuscan mainland, which are often called 'The pearls of the Mediterranean' and, legend has it, were dropped into the sea by Aphrodite herself. You could also sail across to Corsica, but at 60 nM, it’s not worth considering if you are only on a short charter.

Our six-day itinerary covers 88 nM and heads anticlockwise around the largest and most beautiful of the islands - Elba. There's a multitude of villages, marinas, beaches and bays to visit, and the scenery offers a bit of everything, so you'll be surprised that you are still on the same small island. 88 nM is on the short side for distances to sail in a week – so it will be a leisurely week of sailing 3-4 hours a day - but the other islands aren’t worth the effort and hours to get to and from, or worth missing parts of Elba for.

Tuscany - 6 day sailing itinerary

We’re heading to the nearest part of it, Rio Marina, so it should be a straight-forward run or reach with the prevailing summer North Easterly winds, but throw in a few tacks to get your crew warmed up, and to let them work off a bit of steam.

Rio Marina is an old iron-mining town and the black beaches here are known as the ‘Shining coast’ because the sparkle that comes from the iron dust mixed in the sand. There’s a mining museum in town if you’re interested, and the town is also noted for its unmissable clock tower (if you get to the marina, it’s so big, you honestly can’t miss it!)

Portoferraio

Portoferraio was made the capital of the island when Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here. He almost single-handedly developed the island from a back-water to a thriving commercial community, and the locals are proud to call him one of their own.

You can still visit the two houses he lived in whilst he was in the city, or there are a number of big forts to explore. Some historians also have theories that Jason and the famed Argonauts once landed on one of the nearby beaches!

Marciana

Marciana is actually made up of two villages: Marciana Marina on the coast, where you’ll find a decent array of shops and restaurants centred around the marina, the famous Appiani watch-tower-cum-fort and a few nice beaches, and Marciana Alta, which is the hilltop town some 375m above – it looks idyllic, and there is a fort and the old mint to see, but it’s hard work to get up there, so perhaps it is best viewed from a sun-lounger with a glass of the local white wine (which, by the way, is excellent!)

Marina di Campo

Getting there means we’re flipping from the North to the South of Elba, essentially skirting around the bottom of the biggest mountain on the island, Monte Capanne, which is 1,019m tall. If anyone is bored of being on the boat, they could hike over the mountain and meet you on the other side – it’s about 10 miles and a bit of a climb (but you could cheat and grab a cable-car from Marciana Alta to the summit).

If you’re sailing, you’ll pass the wreck of the Elviscot Italian cargo ship near Pomonte, which went down in 1972 on its way from Naples to Marseille and lies about 10m below the water-line. It’s very popular with snorkelers and scuba divers – as is much of the coastline of Elba.

Porto Azzurro

The fishing village used to have a dubious reputation (and the only prison on the island), which is why they changed its name to ‘Porto Azzurro’ in the 1950’s as an attempt to lure more tourists to the area – it worked: now you’ll find a mix of holidaymakers who enjoy the history, the clear blue seas, and the beautiful old town.

Aside from the fort, there’s also walks to the nearby Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrat, a remote hill-top church with stunning panoramas 3km away (built by a Spanish King in thanks to God for helping him land here during a terrible storm), or the green lake around the coast at Terranera.

Follonica

But now we’re heading for home, likely tacking into the wind as we head back to the relative civilisation of the Tuscan mainland and the mega-marina at Follonica. You’ll need to refuel the boat before you return her safely to where you found her. You can stay on-board overnight, and then disembark early tomorrow morning. As it’s changeover, there should be a few sailors out and about tonight who you can exchange tales of your adventures.

And then the holiday is over. Have a safe journey home. Hopefully everyone got on well, you’ve strengthened friendships or family bonds, had a blast, and you’re already talking about where you are going to go sailing next year! Head to PlainSailing.com and check out our other destination guides for inspiration, or to book another stellar voyage.

Sailing Conditions

Italy Sailing - Wind Conditions

Things get a little more exciting for sailors as you get further out towards the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, as you notice that the wind starts to pick-up.

During the sailing season, the winds spins through the islands, and can arrive at you from any direction, though it's most likely to come from either the South-east or the North-west.

In winter, the sailing gets a little more challenging still - there is no real prevailing wind conditions, and the wind can be anything from non-existent to gale force.

Tuscany - Average Temperature

Marina di Scarlino, Follonica

The modern and massive Marina di Scarlino is a short walk south from Follonica, has over 960 berths and is another fantastic example of a marina resort development - more than just a yacht marina, there's a hotel, 50+ holiday apartments, a swimming pool, a selection of shops and restaurants and even a pizzeria!

If you need to stay on dry land before or after your charter, we can recommend the fancy  Resort Baia Aparthotel (in the marina) or the three-star Hotel La Darsena (nearby).

Marina di Scarlino, Follonica

Castiglioncello

Castiglioncello is another big, grand modern marina in Italy, which has space for over 650 boats and which boasts about '360 degree hospitality' - there's wifi and decent toilet facilities, and, as well as a large supermarket in the marina, there's a whole 'commercial village' or shopping centre. There's also a range of multiple bars and restaurants to help you while away the hours and get set up for a week away at sea. You can also walk into the nearby town of Rosignano.

Charters are typically Saturday to Saturday, so you might need somewhere to spend the night near to the marina. If we're in the area, we head to La Marinella Hotel or Hotel Villa dei Gerani - both are nearby and offer views over the marina, and the latter also has its own private beach.

The 6-day itinerary above is for sailing from our main base in Follonica - if you were sailing from Castiglioncello, you would still head to check out Elba, but you could cut down the number of nights there and visit either the island of Capraia or the mainland marinas of Cecina or San Vincenzo on your way out or back.

Yacht charter in Tuscany

Yacht charter in tuscany: tuscan archipelago – a hidden gem.

Yacht Charter in Tuscany, in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park: the largest marine park in Europe and includes 7 main islands of the Tuscan Archipelago . The starting point usually is Argentario area , with a choice of two wonderful ports, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole , both offer all services required to welcome yachts and their guests. These two famous fishing ports have now turned out to be great resort ports.

The area consist of Island of Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona and some smaller islets and rocks. Each island is different from the other, it preserves the traces of its history, each island is unique, original, with only one trait in common: the beauty of its nature.

ELBA: Elba is, for those who sail, a privileged cruise destination, easy to access, able to offer an incomparable choice of anchorages within very varied landscapes, all with weather conditions almost always mild. The tour of Elba (about 50 miles) can be done in one day, but this is of no interest. To fully appreciate its charm you will have to have time to wander from anchorage to anchor or marinas, without giving up the pleasure of an excursion inland. One of the most fascinating bays in the area is undoubtedly Marina di Campo where there is the largest beach on the island of Elba by extension, with its 1850 meters of white sand of granite origin. GIGLIO island : The island of Giglio lies in the Southern corner of the Tuscan Archipelago, South of Elba Mostly inhabited, it is known for its untouched natural beauty, the crystal clear, emerald colored waters, sandy beaches and beautiful coves. Island’s many caves and ancient wrecks, makes it one of the best scuba diving spots in Italy. The breathtaking underwater world has a great diversity of species: one often encounters lunar or tuna swarms (especially in spring by the influence of the currents). You will find octopus, conga, barracudas, toothed bream, moray eels, monk fish, giant spider crabs (with a body diameter of more than 30 cm) and crawfish. With a little luck you can also see seahorses.

CAPRAIA: the only volcanic island of the Tuscan Archipelago, it is among the most maritime island realities, being 54 km from the continental coast. The Capraiesi seabed is often a destination for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts, where among the rich prairies of poseidonia it is possible to observe groupers, snappers and sea bream. Finally, it is important to point out that in this area of the Mediterranean Sea, there is a massive presence of cetaceans and for this reason the “ Pelagos International Marine Mammal Sanctuary “, the largest marine protected area in Europe between the French, Monegasque and Italian territories, where you have the opportunity to see fin whales.

PIANOSA: The territory of the island is totally inserted in the protection zone 1 and within the perimeter of the Park there are also the islets of La Scarpa and La Scola. Even at sea the territory is protected up to a mile from the coast. The seabed around the island is certainly among the richest and most pristine.

AM Charter Yacht charter in Tuscany

GIANNUTRI: a limestone island characterized by cavernous limestone, ancient sedimentary rocks and a very jagged and rocky coast rich in numerous caves. The marine environment is very rich, the exceptional transparency of the water and the presence of wrecks, make the depths of Giannutri unique. The wreck of the Anna Bianca lies inside the northern part of Cala Ischiaiola, it is a deep dive, but the visibility is so good that you can see the shape of the wreck even in apnea. Visiting the spectacular wreck of the Nasim is a bit more challenging due to the depth, but the white color of the seabed makes the diving an unforgettable experience.

GORGONA : It is the smallest, greenest, and wildest of the islands in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Gorgona is the last penal colony in Europe, before it was visited only by reservation and under strict control by the Penitentiary Administration. From spring 2016 access for tourist and naturalistic purposes is again allowed. The island seems to have a woman’s profile from the Tuscan coast and, like a siren, beckons sailors and dreamers. It appears lush and soft, perfect for exploring and falling in love with.

Yacht Charter In Tuscany

This Italian region embraces its future through the lens of its rich history. The robust character of its people is deeply rooted in culture and the knowledge that blossoms from art. In Tuscany, living amidst the beauty of ‘divine’ consciousness is an everyday experience. This unique environment offers enlightening intellectual insights. Imagine, for instance, being Leonardo Da Vinci, arriving in Florence in 1469, and looking up to the sky to see Brunelleschi’s dome! In essence, it invites reflection.

Indeed, we are all drawn to these places! Elba, the island of Montecristo, the island of Giglio (made even more famous by the cruise ship Concordia), and then Giannutri, Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa - in short, all the elements are in place for one to explore the sea and a more hidden side of Tuscany.

The Jeanneau 57, a versatile vessel, allows for navigation with attention to space. In Tuscany and other seas, it has demonstrated its engineering value. With a length of 17.78 m, a beam of 5 m, and a draft of 2.5 m, this boat can be yours for a week starting from around €8.500, peaking at €10,500 for the most expensive week of the year. Life on board is organized with sport fishing and snorkeling equipment, a microwave, a barbecue, a washer/dryer, and 3 to 4 cabins plus a crew cabin. It also comes with a tender equipped with a 15HP outboard motor. Skipper chef and hostess will be glad to receive you on board.

Elba Island

The way to be believed is to make the truth incredible!” This quote from Napoleon Bonaparte perfectly opens the window on the Island of Elba. After all, who better than Napoleon to highlight its beauty? The Island of Elba, just off the coast of Tuscany, boasts a rich, pristine sea with around 200 beaches, each worthy of a visit. Rich in history, the island offers countless reasons for a visit, not just for its natural beauty. The renowned freediving school, for example, will teach you to breathe the best "Elba air".

Napoleon's Yacht

The Island of Elba has been narrating unique stories since the Iron Age! Each story casts a distinct shadow, but when we attempt to capture Napoleon’s gaze, things become complex; power escalates and becomes unmanageable. Alessandro Manzoni stated it very clearly; Napoleon was dazzling! So, if we were to charter a yacht for him, what kind of vessel would it be? We envisioned a motor yacht! Particularly swift. Setting paradoxes aside, it can be said that the Island of Elba can astonish in a thousand different ways.

eaconsea_yacht_charter_report__-removebg-preview

On the shores of Argentario! This diverse environment, a WWF oasis, is home to countless beaches that never cease to amaze. Embarking on a cruise in this region, always offers a surprise, given that we are in the southernmost part of Tuscany. However, we couldn’t be more centrally located! From here, you can delve into the robust Maremma, filled with all the elements that make Tuscany renowned its cuisine, history, and natural beauty. It’s no wonder that many celebrities seek refuge here, in search of a region that is rich in every aspect of beauty.

Michelangelo's David

A boat visit to the Tuscan archipelago comes as you are headed elsewhere! In the Tyrrhenian area east of Corsica, Capraia is only 20 kilometers away, implying a more or less continuous sighting of the archipelago.

By renting a boat and managing a route from north to south following the imaginary arc drawn by the islands, you brush past Corsica and Liguria to finally envelop Tuscany up to Mount Argentario at the gates of Lazio. This is in a natural environment that, especially for smaller islands like Pianosa, Gorgona, and Montecristo, underscores the need to manage tourist traffic to protect environmental balances

This islet, compared to its larger sisters in the Tuscan Archipelago, hosts the last island prison in Europe, housing about 70 inmates. The island is home to some endemic plant species that add to the allure of an environment that piques the curiosity of discerning cruise passengers. One reason to visit, in addition to the crystal-clear waters, could be the pursuit of the Saracen’s treasure! However, visiting the island can be complicated due to the presence of the prison. It is advisable to inquire with the tourist authority of Tuscany for more information.

isola d'elba .jpeg

The optimal route to explore Tuscany by boat begins in the north, gradually moving south towards Lazio. This approach brings you closer to Fiumicino Airport (a major Italian hub), providing convenience at the end of your cruise.

In Tuscany, yacht chartering is taken very seriously; no one in this region approaches this activity lightly. Thanks to a long-standing tradition of luxury, which has reached historic levels in Tuscany, it can be said that Carrara marble serves as the ‘milestone’ in a global success story.

PORTO SANTO STEFANO: ELEGANT MAREMMA

Maremma is one of the best-known areas in tuscany, beloved by tourists for its rustic and bucolic charm. make time to stop here on your holiday in tuscany on a yacht charter, before sailing out to porto santo stefano..

Porto Santo Stefano, near Grosseto, is known for its excellent seafood cuisine that features mouth-watering preparations like caldaro – a soup that fishermen once prepared with freshly-caught fish – and scaveccio , made with “mazzama”, the collective name of the “poor” (cheap) fish like surmullet, hakes, white sea bream, and annular sea breams, that always comes with the catch of the day. Tuscany boasts premium restaurants fit for the most demanding palates.

Porto Santo Stefano has heavenly waters that are recognized as diving and snorkelling sites for amateurs and experts alike.

Many of the local beaches are unspoiled and backed with fragrant Mediterranean vegetation, affording hours of quiet on a holiday in Tuscany on a yacht charter . Lovely retreats include Marinella, Moletto, Cala Moresca, and Bagni di Domiziano, a windy, rocky inlet perfect to practice water sports like windsurfing.

Yacht CHARTER in Italy

-- our company, marina yacht charter, international catamaran rental, italy’s most attractive destinations.

Marina Yacht Charter rents catamarans for private cruises in Sardinia, Tuscany, and the Amalfi Coast, carefully selecting the best itineraries to create the perfect vacation. We only propose destinations and itineraries that we ourselves enjoy exploring during the summer.

Brand new fleet

Our fleet is entirely new: as a company policy, we do not rent catamarans that are more than 3 years old. This means that by choosing Marina Yacht Charter, your private cruise in Sardinia, Amalfi, or Tuscany will be experienced on a catamaran built between 2021 and 2024.

Bareboat or skipper-included rentals

Marina Yacht Charter’s catamaran rental service is highly flexible. Depending on our clients' needs, we can rent our catamarans bareboat or with a skipper and hostess included: an entire team working to provide you with the most relaxing sailing experience ever.

Smooth Sailing with MYC

At MYC, we've got your back with technical assistance and continuous support throughout your sailing adventure. Our team of savvy tech experts is always ready to provide any information or help you might need. Before you set sail, let's get to know each other a bit better.

-- LIFE ON BOARD

Sailing the gemmes of italy.

A vacation spent on one of our catamarans means a week (or two!) of complete immersion in Italy’s marine beauties. We always suggest an itinerary, but you are completely free to personalize your vacation based on your family or friends’ needs and preferences. A vacation like this creates unforgettable memories for every age: kids love the fun part of always being in the middle of the sea, and adults just love the feeling you get when you experience Italy’s coasts from an exclusive point of view.

We have created a video summary of our clients’ experiences with us that shows how a vacation spent cruising on a catamaran is based on sharing. Sharing food, sharing experiences, sharing spaces: our catamarans can hold up to 12 people with double and single bedrooms with all the comforts needed.

-- OUR FLEET

Brand new yachts and catamarans from a trusted partner.

We only rent recently built catamarans from the well-known Italian company DUFOUR CATAMARANS 48. We know very well that nothing is worse than having to deal with a non-functioning catamaran in the middle of a week-long vacation. That’s why we only rent brand new catamarans that are being technically revised every week.

On the right, you can have a look at our fleet and check all the technical details that our Made-in-Italy catamarans have to offer.
