Back in the 1980s, an invitation from Forbes magazine owner and consummate bon vivant , Malcolm Forbes, to join him aboard his beloved superyacht The Highlander was a reason for celebration.

And Forbes was a master when it came to celebrating. His first of many Fourth of July parties aboard The Highlander , anchored off Governors Island in New York Harbor, saw the world’s greatest movers and shakers piped aboard by tartan-clad Scottish bagpipers.

There on the yacht’s decks were the likes of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Henry and Nancy Kissinger, David and Peggy Rockefeller and Brooke Astor. More than 150 Maine lobsters and 30 pounds of Scottish smoked salmon were reportedly flown in to feed the elite crowd.

During the five years Forbes owned the yacht, before his death in 1990, she traveled the globe; everywhere from then Communist China, to Bora-Bora, to Thailand, the Philippines and Alaska.

Launched in 1985, this was the last of five Forbes-owned yachts named The Highlander, after his family’s Scottish roots. But this one was unique. Designed by world-renowned designer Jon Bannenberg and built in Holland by Feadship , her dark green hull—said to be the color of dollar bills—stretched 162 feet bow to stern.

“She was nicknamed ‘The Ultimate Capitalist Tool’ for good reason,” the yacht’s current owner, New York-based interior designer Joanne de Guardiola told Robb Report . “Anyone who was anyone stepped aboard at some time during the ’80s.”

De Guardiola and her husband, investment banker Roberto de Guardiola, bought The Highlander from the Forbes estate back in 2012. And just as she’d done with the couple’s previous Feadship, the classic 159-foot Audacia , de Guardiola commissioned a top-to-bottom refit, this time with Florida’s Derecktor Shipyards.

“We had no thoughts of buying another yacht; we loved Audacia. But back in 2012, we had heard The Highlander was for sale and I went to take a look. She was not in great shape, but as a huge fan of Jon Bannenberg’s designs, and knowing her amazing history, we couldn’t resist,” she said.

The exhaustive, two-year refit took the steel and aluminum superyacht down to the studs. The yacht was extended by 12 feet to add a swim deck and rear “garage” for water toys; the top deck was lengthened. Effectively doubling its size, and the master stateroom was moved to where the observatory used to be.

The entire interior was redesigned and refitted with more modern materials and finishes. Out went the padded leather ceilings, the somber, dark green carpets and ornate Chippendale antique chairs; in went bleached-white Anigre paneling, wide-planked dark wood flooring, and brightly colored pop art.

One especially jaw-dropping feature de Guardiola created was the stunning, open-tread marble staircase from salon to upper deck. That and the new, glass-enclosed sky lounge with its disco vibe and blue onyx floor.

“The yacht didn’t really suit a family’s needs—she was really designed for Malcolm Forbes-style corporate entertaining,” says de Guardiola. “And if you wanted to splash in the water, you had to jump over the sides. Mr. Forbes didn’t like to swim.”

But de Guardiola is quick to add that her primary focus with the refit was evolving and not compromising Jon Bannenberg’s iconic design. “That’s what attracted me to the yacht in the first place.”

Mechanical improvements included the installation of Quantum zero speed stabilizers and full rebuilds for the trusty 900 hp Detroit Diesels. They still give the yacht a top speed of 18 mph, cruising at an easy 14 mph with transatlantic capability.

With kids in mind, Highlander —de Guardiola dropped the “the”—is brimming with water toys. Everything from Waverunners, Seabobs, banana floats and kayaks, to Malcolm Forbes’ much-loved, Ferrari-red 22-foot Donzi speedboat. Sadly, his other favorite, a custom-built Cigarette Racing powerboat, is no more. After being fully restored during the refit, the boat caught fire while Highlander was anchored off the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

“My husband was just heading off with our daughter and friends when the fire broke out,” de Guardiola says. “Everyone ended up in the water but were okay. It was one cool boat. It ran at over 60 mph.”

Since the refit, the de Guardiolas have taken friends and family all around the Mediterranean, hanging out at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and hitting most of the Greek islands. Winters were in the Caribbean. Typically, they spent eight to 10 weeks a year aboard.

So why the decision to sell? De Guardiola says she’s looking for her next project: “As with my interior design work, I love the intellectual challenge of a makeover. It’s also time. We feel we’ve been good custodians. Now someone else should enjoy her.”

Built in 2013 by the celebrated Italian Codecasa shipyard to a design penned by Andrea Bacigalupo, BON VIVANT underwent a comprehensive bow to stern refit in 2020 leaving her in pristine condition, luxurious and extremely popular with charter guests. Comfortably cruising at 23 knots and with a top speed of 29 knots, BON VIVANT makes it easy to move swiftly from one port to the next, while her relatively shallow draft allows her to anchor in the secluded coves and sheltered bays of her cruising grounds.

BON VIVANT’s light, bright interiors are the work of Franco & Anna Della Role who chose a neutral palette with touches of soft blue reflecting the white sands and crystal waters of her cruising grounds. Accents of brushed stainless steel and mid-tone timber add sophistication and a mid-century modern ambiance. The main salon is a study in open plan relaxation with a stunning sit-up bar positioned to take in the views, opulent lounge area and a formal dining table for 10 all flooded in natural light from the surrounding windows. The upper deck sky lounge offers another light-filled space for relaxing and entertaining with panoramic windows and huge sliding glass doors blurring the lines between indoor spaces and outdoor living.

Outside, there is near endless deck space to enjoy. The main deck aft offers comfortable lounge seating overlooking the stern that can be sheltered from the sun by a retractable awning. There is also a table for fabulous alfresco breakfasts shaded by the upper deck overhang.

For entertaining, there is no better place than the expansive upper deck with a gorgeous sit-up bar, large dining table and two lounge areas. The entire space can be left open to the elements for sunset soirees and moonlit dinners under starry skies or shaded under retractable awnings.

Sun lovers are bound to head to the foredeck with its expanse of sun pads, U-shaped seating, dinette tables and huge Jacuzzi all offering the best views on board. Further forward, a small deck area on the bow allows guests to truly appreciate BON VIVANT’s exhilarating speeds.

A generous beach club makes it easy to dive into the water and into BON VIVANT’s impressive collection of toys. There are kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling kit for exploration and a collection of the finest water toys, from jetskis and JetSurfs to SeaBobs for those who want to up the tempo along with an array of towable toys. Two GoCycles are on hand for shore-side adventures while the 23' Castoldi tender makes it easy to get from boat to shore.

After a busy day on the water, BON VIVANT provides six restful retreats for up to 12 overnight guests. The full-beam master stateroom is a spectacular haven on the main deck, with two dressing rooms, two bathrooms and a private balcony perfect for intimate morning coffee. There is also direct access to both the private study and fully-equipped onboard gym. Codecasa Shipyards have built and delivered their first 50 meters open Motoryacht, the new CODECASA 50s – M.Y. Framura 3 . Similarly to the CODECASA 45s, this yacht as well is able to guarantee very high speed performances reaching a top speed of 28 knots at light displacement conditions, thanks to her two 80 S III KA.ME.WA. waterjets and her 71 B III KA.ME.WA. central booster. Same as the CODECASA 45s, also the M.Y. Framura 3 is equipped with a zero speed gyroscopic stabilizers system, manufactured by the Australian company SHIP DYNAMICS, that optimizes the comfort onboard. Andre Bacigalupo is the Naval Architect who designed the bottom lines and the Exteriors of the Yacht. As to the Interiors, they were designed by Architects Franco and Anna Maria Della Role, trusted collaborators of Codecasa Shipyards since many years, who strictly co-operated with the Owning Company’s Interior Designer.

With six large cabins, Bon Vivant yacht is a popular choice for all charter group configurations. Presented in immaculate condition following a significant 2020 refit, huge investment has been made to update her many charter amenities, including the addition of an on-deck Jacuzzi forward and a brand new, fully-equipped Technogym with a fold-down balcony.

Built in 2013 by Codecasa, Bon Vivant yacht is a shining example of the Italian shipyard’s custom-built, all-aluminium superyachts. A high-speed performance yacht, she is both seaworthy and comfortable with high quality, award-winning features to create an unmatched onboard experience.

Reaching thrilling top speeds of 29 knots, a sporty exterior design with open-plan layout by Andrea Bacigalupo creates near-endless deck space for guests to enjoy. Relax on the upper deck sun loungers, enjoy al fresco meals shaded from the midday heat, or take an aperitif on the inbuilt U-shaped seating with dinette tables on the foredeck. Those wishing to spend time bronzing will also appreciate the large foredeck sunpads, while further forward a smart deck space allows guests to truly appreciate Bon Vivant’s incredible speeds.

Additional lounge seating is found on the main deck aft, which is subtly sheltered from both sun and wind. When at anchor, long hours spent in the generous beach club are made all the more comfortable by Bon Vivant’s gyroscopic zero speed stabilisers. From here, guests can dive into snorkel exploration or up the tempo with a host of inflatable towables. A collection of the finest water toys, from jetskis and JetSurfs to SeaBobs offer a large dose of fun for all ages. Two GoCycles make shore-side exploration pleasurable and easy, and a 23’ Castoldi tender picks up the tempo for waterski and wakeboard fans alike.

Bon Vivant yacht accommodates up to 12 guests are accommodated in six large cabins. The owner’s full-beam stateroom offers an outstanding living space on the main deck, with two dressing rooms, two bathrooms, a private balcony and direct access to both the owner’s study and the onboard gym. An additional two VIP double cabins, one double cabin and three twin cabins can be found on the lower deck. All guest suites include entertainment centres with televisions and en suite facilities.

Perfectly suited to all types of charter party, from couples to families and corporate groups, Bon Vivant superyacht has something for everyone, with themed romantic charters or corporate events even an option.

Merle Wood & Associates has been appointed the worldwide central agent for sale of the 72-foot Bon Vivant , a 2004 Riva Splendida that was refitted in 2008.

The asking price for the yacht is $999,000.

Bon Vivant has interior design by Baldwin Yacht Interiors. She is equipped with an electric hardtop, bow and stern thrusters, and a retractable shore power cord.

Merle Wood describes the yacht’s condition as turnkey. Accommodations are for six guests in three staterooms, with quarters for two crew.

The engines on Bon Vivant are showing approximately 1,200 hours each. Merle Wood & Associates reports a maximum speed of 36 knots and a cruising speed of 28 knots.

Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Moscow

The largest Le Corbusier exhibition in a quarter of a century celebrates the modernist architect’s life and his connection with the city.

Given his affinity with Moscow, it is perhaps surprising that the city had never hosted a major examination of Le Corbusier’s work until now. However, the Pushkin Museum and the Le Corbusier Fund have redressed that discrepancy with the comprehensive exhibition “Secrets of Creation: Between Art and Architecture,” which runs until November 18.

Presenting over 400 exhibits, the exhibition charts Le Corbusier’s development from the young man eagerly sketching buildings on a trip around Europe, to his later years as a prolific and influential architect.

The exhibition brings together the different facets of his talent, showing his publications, artwork and furniture design alongside photographs, models and blueprints of his buildings.

Irina Antonova, director of the Pushkin Museum, said, “It was important for us to also exhibit his art. People know Le Corbusier the architect, but what is less well know is that he was also an artist. Seeing his art and architecture together gives us an insight into his mind and his thought-processes.”

What becomes obvious to visitors of the exhibition is that Le Corbusier was a man driven by a single-minded vision of how form and lines should interact, a vision he was able to express across multiple genres.

The upper wings of the Pushkin Museum are separated by the central stairs and two long balconies. The organizers have exploited this space, allowing comparison of Le Corbusier’s different art forms. On one side there are large paintings in the Purist style he adapted from Cubism, while on the other wall there are panoramic photographs of his famous buildings.

Le Corbusier was a theorist, producing many pamphlets and manifestos which outlined his view that rigorous urban planning could make society more productive and raise the average standard of living.

It was his affinity with constructivism, and its accompanying vision of the way architecture could shape society, which drew him to visit the Soviet Union, where, as he saw it, there existed a “nation that is being organized in accordance with its new spirit.”

The exhibition’s curator Jean-Louis Cohen explains that Le Corbusier saw Moscow as “somewhere he could experiment.” Indeed, when the architect was commissioned to construct the famous Tsentrosoyuz Building, he responded by producing a plan for the entire city, based on his concept of geometric symmetry.

Falling foul of the political climate

He had misread the Soviet appetite for experimentation, and as Cohen relates in his book Le Corbusier, 1887-1965, drew stinging attacks from the likes of El Lissitsky, who called his design “a city on paper, extraneous to living nature, located in a desert through which not even a river must be allowed to pass (since a curve would contradict the style).”

Not to be deterred, Le Corbusier returned to Moscow in 1932 and entered the famous Palace of the Soviets competition, a skyscraper that was planned to be the tallest building in the world.

This time he fell foul of the changing political climate, as Stalin’s growing suspicion of the avant-garde led to the endorsement of neo-classical designs for the construction, which was ultimately never built due to the Second World War.

Situated opposite the proposed site for the Palace of the Soviets, the exhibition offers a tantalizing vision of what might have been, presenting scale models alongside Le Corbusier’s plans, and generating the feeling of an un-built masterpiece.

Despite Le Corbusier’s fluctuating fortunes in Soviet society, there was one architect who never wavered in his support . Constructivist luminary Alexander Vesnin declared that the Tsentrosoyuz building was the "the best building to arise in Moscow for over a century.”

The exhibition sheds light on their professional and personal relationship, showing sketches and letters they exchanged. In a radical break from the abstract nature of most of Le Corbusier’s art, this corner of the exhibition highlights the sometimes volatile architect’s softer side, as shown through nude sketches and classical still-life paintings he sent to Vesnin.

“He was a complex person” says Cohen. “It’s important to show his difficult elements; his connections with the USSR, with Mussolini. Now that relations between Russia and the West have improved, we can examine this. At the moment there is a new season in Le Corbusier interpretation.” To this end, the exhibition includes articles that have never previously been published in Russia, as well as Le Corbusier’s own literature.

Completing Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Russia is a preview of a forthcoming statue, to be erected outside the Tsentrosoyuz building. Even if she couldn’t quite accept his vision of a planned city, Moscow is certainly welcoming him back.
