Dockside Boat & Bed is a certified Bed & Breakfast on private yachts.  Our guests enjoy their own private, dockside boat for the night.   Much more than a hotel room, a night on a yacht is a total experience.  From the gentle waves lapping on the hull to the sounds of seagulls and pelicans overhead.. guests are immersed in the marine lifestyle.   

All of our guests enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast onboard their boat.  Consisting of various fresh pastries, fruit and orange juice.  The boats are also stocked with complimentary bottled water, coffee/tea service and light snacks.  We also offer complimentary WiFi, DirectTV and DVD players onboard  our yachts.

We are located in the beautiful and scenic Rainbow Harbor in downtown Long Beach, California.  Our dock is centrally located steps away from over 20 restaurants, shopping, the Aquarium of the Pacific, movie theater, boat rentals, whale watching and much more.

What did you get up to? We visited the Sunborn Yacht Hotel for an overnight stay and 3 course meal, as part of my wife’s 40th birthday celebrations. We travelled into the city by train and jumped on the underground to Custom House, where the boat is moored on the Thames. On arrival at the quayside, you get the instant sensation that this is not going to be your average hotel stay, as you are greeted by the 120m Sunborn super yacht in all its glistening glory! Once on board, we were welcomed by friendly staff and given the keys to our room. The inside of the boat is just as spectacular as the outside, with a grand staircase and chandeliers dominating the main reception area. Our beautiful king-size room had its own private balcony overlooking the Thames and the city, which gave us an opportunity to relax and take in the sights before dinner. Dinner was booked for 8pm, so once we had changed into our glad rags, we made our way to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The restaurant is situated at the top of the grand staircase, which gives you a great opportunity to take a few snaps next to the chandeliers on your way up! Our 3 course meal was absolutely lovely, I had the steak and Emma had the corn fed Chicken, accompanied by a few glasses of fizz! We have 2 kids, so we took advantage of a full night’s sleep in our super comfy king sized bed! In the morning, we decided to explore the boat and as the evening rain had cleared we were able to get out onto the sun decks and have a coffee. Our stay also included a full English breakfast, which was fantastic and filled us up for our planned day in the city. Overall, we had a great restful break away and could not fault the staff, accommodation and food. The Sunborn offers a unique way to stay in city and offers a bit of the wow factor, especially when celebrating a special occasion. We would definitely recommend it and would love to return! What did you enjoy the most? Our favourite part of the experience the 3 course meal. The restaurant setting was amazing overlooking the city lights and the food was top class, which made Emma’s birthday celebrations extra special.

Top Tip 1. Bring a camera! 2. Remember your glad rags! 3. Take advantage of the sights and lights of London, why not take in a west end show during your stay!

Traveling by boat overnight is one of the truest of adventures out there. There is nothing quite like sitting in the middle of the ocean staring at an entire night sky, pointing out the likes of the Big Dipper. There is a great majesty that goes along with the silence of being on the sea at night. There is nothing near to you, perhaps not even the distant light of another boat or land. The pattern of the waves surrounds you. 

Now, all of this may sound like a distant adventure undertaken or written by Robert Louis Stevenson, but in reality, you can join in the adventure. Plenty of Boatsetter’s listings offer overnight journeys. Even if they don’t offer overnight trips, message the captain/boat owner to see if they are willing to take you.

 Boats such as pontoons, fishing boats, and small sailboats are not ideal for overnight rentals. Houseboats, yachts, and larger sailboats will provide a much comfortable sleeping situation because they typically have a large comfortable and sheltered cabin . You’ll need to take the following steps to make an overnight boat rental happen: 

How to Prepare for Overnight Boating

An overnight boat rental requires some extra preparation that a  day rental  doesn’t require. When you take a boat out for a day, you don’t need to think too much beyond packing swim shorts, sunscreen, shades, drinks, and snacks. Some additional preparation and supplies will be necessary to have a safe overnight adventure. 

If you have  chartered a captain  and crew to run your overnight trip for you, then you can skip past this part as this is what needs to be undertaken if you’ll be going without the captain and crew. It isn’t recommended that you dive straight into overnight boating if you are new to boating altogether. This type of boating poses completely new challenges and safety precautions. 

Before you set out, you need to make plenty of checks on your boat. Firstly you should take a walk around the boat and check that the engine is running well. Ensure that you have plenty of fuel to last you as you will be away from the dock for at least one night.

Double-check all of the communication and navigation equipment. You must be extra vigilant at night regarding the navigational equipment when traveling by night as you no longer have the clear views provided by the sun. It will more than likely be pitch black if the moon is not bright. It is worth remembering that most collisions at sea happen at night. If your GPS isn’t up to scratch, then you run the risk of hitting a rock or running aground when you’re on the water at night. 

You should also check all of the lights on board the boat as other boats out at night need to see you, and you will need lights to navigate. Make sure that you have spare batteries for torches and headlamps. Make sure you know where all of the life vests and other personal flotation devices are. Memorize this as finding them by night may be harder if you are panicking in an emergency.

The last thing to check before you set out is the weather. If there is a big storm due, it is perhaps not wise to make the trip and save it for the future. Storms through the night can be particularly violent, and the lack of vision that you have makes it particularly hazardous. 

Set Some Rules

Ensure that you lay down some ground rules with the rest of the passengers and make sure that everyone is clear about the safety risks involved when traveling by boat through the night. Make sure that people don’t go wandering around the outside of the boat at night unless they are on watch for other ships. Another tip for those that are renting bareboat, only one person is on watch at the helm at night that they do not leave that position until they are relieved from their duty. If they walk off or fall asleep and the boat is in motion, it puts everybody in danger. 

It is up to you whether or not you choose to travel through the night or if you want to  drop anchor . Traveling by night has its hazard so anchoring down is a safer bet. If you do anchor down, it is up to you to decide if it feels safe or not for everyone to sleep. Check how the weather is and how secure your anchor is. If the sea is calm and your anchor is down firmly, then it is very likely that everyone can sleep soundly. If not, you should have someone on watch duty to ensure that everything stays ok. 

When it comes to  watch duty  make sure that everyone agrees with what times they will do it. If you have been selected to do it later in the night, then make sure that you wake up promptly for it as the person on duty won’t be able to leave their post to wake you up. Overall navigating at night isn’t too strenuous a task if the sea is calm. The assistance of autopilot should make the shift a breeze providing that there are no mishaps.

Full Day And Overnight Stay On Luxury Yacht

How It Works

Experience Days Overnight Breaks: Nothing says 'life of luxury' like spending the day on a yacht...except perhaps spending a night there too! With this fabulous overnight break, you'll get the chance to spend a day sailing on the Solent and English Channel, before spending a night in beautiful cabin on board the yacht.

Step aboard the beautiful 53 foot yacht and set sail from Lymington Marina. Under the expert tuition of your friendly skipper and crew, you will have the chance to get hands on with every aspect of the sailing process - learn how to raise and trim the sails, get to grips with navigation techniques, and even take the helm! Or perhaps you'd rather just relax and take in the views as the wind whips through your hair? This day is yours, so spend it however best suits you. Throughout your full day sailing experience, you'll journey through the sheltered waters of the Solent to Isle of Wight, where you'll gain an impressive view of the iconic Needles. You'll take a break to enjoy a picnic lunch, or dine at a local restaurant before heading back out on to the water for an afternoon sail. Whether you choose to spend a night on board before your sailing adventure, or as the day draws to a close, you can bet that the gentle rocking of the water and the sound of the waves will lull you into a restful nights sleep.

A truly unique adventure, this Full Day Yacht Sailing Experience and Overnight Stay makes the perfect experience gift for any special occasion, and is even better when shared with a loved one.

Availability

This experience runs generally from Mid-March to late October, (subject to availability).

Each day sail will set off around 9/9:30am and return for around 5/5:30pm.

Saturdays during the summer months get booked up very quickly, so we advise to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Requirements

The minimum age for this experience is 8, however all under 18s must be accompanied by an participating adult.

If you feel your height or weight may have an effect on your experience please give us a call.

Please Note: Meals are not included in the experience.

You will stop for lunch and will have the chance to visit a local pub for your evening meal so please bring spending money accordingly. if you'd like to have a picnic or barbecue for lunch you will need to bring the provisions with you.

This is a full day and night experience, starting and finishingat Lymington docks.

Your day sail will include 3-4 hours of sailing, a stop forlunch and then another 3-4 hours of sailing.

There will be a maximum of 4 people for individual bookings, or 8 people if you are booking as a group.

This is a shared experience and you could be joined with up to 7 additional people in the day. 

Where is it Located

What to wear.

Please wear comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes. Please also bring swimwear and bring anything you may require for your overnight stay.

Participants should bear in mind that it can get windy out on the open water so you may wish to bring a wind-resistant jacket.

Buoyancy aids will be provided upon arrival.

The yacht includes 4 double cabins with ensuites. Linen and duvets provided. There is also a TV, stereo, and cooking equipment available.

This is an outdoor experience which may be affected by weather and water conditions. If your experience is cancelled due to adverse conditions, it will simply be rescheduled for an alternative date.

Port, helm, starboard… these were all sailing terminologies Willow and I were researching before we ventured to Lymington. As summer draws near, the sailing community are making sure their vessels are prepped and ready for what we hope to be a sunny few months! 

Russ and Andy, the owners of Sailing Spook, were kind enough to invite us on a sailing trip, allowing us to see first-hand what customers experience when they purchase a sailing gift. This was going to be their first sail of the year, and Willow’s first sailing trip, so everyone was excited for Friday 5th April to arrive. 

Prior to our trip, Russ advised us to wear flat shoes and plenty of layers, as let’s not forget it’s still only April! We were also given the meeting point of the Haven Bar and Restaurant. On the morning of the sail, Willow and I drove to Lymington Yacht Haven . After a pleasant journey, we drove into the marina and straight away we could see a two-story building: the Haven Bar and Restaurant. We were lucky enough to find a parking spot right outside, and walked up the stairs to the entrance, excited to meet the team. As we walked in, we were greeting by two friendly faces. Jonathan (nicknamed JB) and Alan were sat on stools near a roaring fire. These were the other crew members who’d be joining us on our sailing trip! Shortly after we had sat down, Russ and Andy arrived, and we discussed the itinerary for the day over a hot cup of coffee. Every trip can be different according to the weather, but with their impressive weather prediction apps we could plan our day to avoid the rain.  

Next, it was time to walk down to the yacht! Yes, you read that correctly. The sailing experiences take place on a luxurious 53-foot yacht , aptly named Sailing Spook 2. We boarded the boat and were welcomed by Erica, Andy’s cousin who was also sailing with us. We were then shown to the lower deck and given a tour of the living quarters, consisting of 4 double en suite bedrooms , a kitchen and seating area. I was surprised at how spacious and cosy this was. Willow and I filled in a short health and safety form, and were offered some Sailing Spook gear to keep us extra warm. This was music to my ears, as I had regrettably only worn thin leggings. With our new trousers, jackets and hats, we were ready to brace the wind, but not before the most important piece of clothing... our life jackets. My initial thought was a big, orange life jacket that gets in the way, but this wasn’t the case. They were small enough that you didn’t know you were wearing one, but technical enough that sensors inside would register if you were in water and automatically inflate. 

Looking like experienced sailors, we walked up to the main deck and watched Andy sail us out of the marina and onto the Solent. The sight of all the boats was one of a postcard. Russ mentioned that the majority of these magnificent boats would only sail twice: once when they are brought into the marina, and once when they are sold and leave the marina. A big part of this is due to the expense. Sailing Spook 2 on the other hand sails more than 160 times a year, simply due to the popularity of these experiences. As we left Lymington, and sailed down the river, Russ explained to us the identification of the channel markers, the red ones being on the starboard side (right) and the green markers being on the port side (left). As we headed towards Yarmouth, we enjoyed Russ’ commentary on the local landmarks, which included Hurst Castle and Brian May’s white mansion, fit for a Queen (get it)!

There is a sheltered area on the deck, which was perfect for keeping out of the wind. As we sat and enjoyed our complimentary chocolate bars, Andy asked if I wanted to have a go at the helm! I excitedly jumped up and took hold of the steering wheel. There was a second steering wheel next to my one so Andy could take control if he needed to. I am proud to say this wasn’t needed – phew! Russ gave me the compass heading to follow and I happily controlled our direction, understanding the delay in steering. To test my ability even further, Andy asked me to steer upwind until the main sail was flapping. This was called ‘luffing up.’ I then had to get the yacht back on track, working with the wind instead of against it. Willow was up next, and did equally as great at the helm. Russ, Andy and Erica were a great team, and often asked if anyone wanted to help with the sailing of the boat before we set sail back to Lymington Yacht Haven for some lunch. 

Once the yacht was securely moored, we headed for some well-deserved food where Russ had reserved us a table. The seaside themed restaurant had a lively atmosphere and the service was friendly and attentive. Willow and I both decided on the lunch special of a fish finger sandwich with salad and fries (definitely recommended)! As well as the lunch menu, there was the all-day menu, from which Alan ordered the yellow Thai fish curry. This looked incredible! JB ordered the mushroom risotto. Sadly, the time came to drive back to Brighton in an attempt to beat rush hour traffic. We had a brilliant time, and would like to say a huge thank you to Sailing Spook’s Russ and Andy for inviting us on a sailing taster day .

Our Romantic Overnight Sydney Harbour Yacht Stay

If you are looking to do something special for your partner, a romantic Sydney Harbour Yacht stay is pretty hard to beat. As far as memorable experiences in Sydney go, this has to be at the top of the list!

Spending the night on Sydney Harbour

We recently had our first real sailing experience when Sydney By Sail invited us to check out their Platinum Romance B&B package . The timing could not have been better as our 15th wedding anniversary was coming up, and I could not think of a more romantic way to spend it.

Sydney Harbour is universally considered one of the most beautiful locations of the world. Spending the night and enjoying a harbour sunset and sunrise is something we will remember forever!

Jumping on board

Sydney By Sail is conveniently located at the Australian Maritime Museum Wharf, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the light rail and Darling Harbour parking garages.

They have several yachts, and today we are on the Elan Impression 45.1, their newest; it’s an impressive vessel with three double beds and two bathrooms! Plenty of room to bring your family or friends, but today it’s all for us!

This 3-hour harbour sail was to be our first sailing experience in a yacht, and when we awoke that morning to favourable weather, we were thrilled. It had been raining solidly for more than a week, and we expected that poor weather might see our romantic getaway postponed.

Skipper Mike welcomed us on board and gave us a quick safety briefing, and then a tour of the yacht. It’s surprising how much space there is below the deck.

We were amazed at how spacious the kitchen and dining space were. The door in the bow was the main bedroom and a separate toilet and shower. At the stern, another bathroom and two bedrooms (small double size).

Let’s get sailing

Under sunny blue skies, we made our way out of Darling Harbour, past Barangaroo and under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We have made this trip dozens of times on a ferry and several harbour cruises, but this is our first time on a vessel this small and it’s a completely unique feeling.

Approaching the Sydney Opera House, it was time to put the sail up and shut down the motor as we coasted past Farm Cove and made our way towards Shark Island.

We are sailing on a Wednesday, a popular day for recreational sailing on the harbour, and there is plenty of activity on the water. We enjoy watching the yacht race around their course just off Clark Island; Mike explained what looked like chaos to us – i.e. they are not really going to crash lol, it just looks like it!

We sailed past Bradley’s Head and Sydney Harbour National Park, making our way across the heads, stopping short of Manly Cove because the winds had picked up and we may not have made good time back to our evening stopover.

The million-dollar question we had before heading out today was, would either of us feel seasick? Thankfully, after some pretty horrible floods and rain in the week before, we had been gifted a very calm day with enough wind for the sails but not enough to make us queasy.

Sadly, the harbour was not its usual sparkling blue but a muddy tone because of the floods.

It took about 30 minutes to gain our sea legs and confidence to make our way to the bow, where we took the opportunity to laze about on the front of the deck to enjoy the view. You can however choose to relax in the seating at the stern with the drinks supply and chat with your skipper while he works.

By the time we were heading to our secluded bay to drop anchor, the sun was setting.

What’s including in your Yacht sleepover?

The Platinum Romance Package includes a 3-hour sail, snacks, dinner and delicious dessert treats. You can choose a continental breakfast or supplies to cook your own bacon and egg spread for the morning.

There is a range of platters, including an antipasto, cold cuts or seafood plate. A range of salads complements these; we went with a seared tuna and a falafel. For dessert, there were chocolate coated strawberries, brownies, macaroons and some Lindt chocolate.

They stock the fridge with juice and water. It’s BYO alcohol, so be sure to pack some Champagne for sunset and perhaps a nice red to drink before bed.

An impressive sound system allowed us to stream our favourite music from our devices; the only side effect was a flat battery just before dark, so don’t forget your charger.

If you tend to sleep late, set your alarm for sunrise and pop up on deck to enjoy it. If you are not ready to embrace the day, you can always pop back under the deck for another snooze!

What to pack for your sleepover

You don’t need to pack much for your overnight stay, pretty much everything was thought of right down to some late-night chocolates in the bedroom! I recommend a shawl or jacket for after sunset.

I would suggest you bring:

• Appropriate footwear – leave the heels at home – white sole shoes are best, but we took ours off as soon as we boarded.
• Swimmers in the warmer months – if you are brave enough to take a dip in the harbour.
• Plenty of your favourite beverages – I would have liked some sparkling water included.
• a book or deck of cards
• a spare battery pack for your phone – you will want to snap a lot of pics
• Earplugs if you find it hard to sleep with gentle water lapping the side of the boat

Anything we would change?

For us, the only thing we would have changed was better on deck lighting at night. It was such a lovely evening, and we were keen to play cards after dinner, but the only lighting was at floor level.

We mentioned this to the crew on pick up the next day, and they had not realised, having only recently taken delivery of the boat, so I expect they will add some lanterns or address this soon.

So do we recommend this overnight Sydney Harbour Yacht Stay?

Southwinds has an impressive English design pedigree and past. Designed by Robert Clark in 1948, her original plans are now in the Museum in Greenwich and her specifications registered with Lloyds.

Stay on a luxury yacht…for less than £200

Beds on board: a new way to stay.

Modern families are an intrepid bunch, especially when it comes to our holidays. Looking beyond traditional hotels and b&bs, we’re g lamping in yurts, sleeping in tree houses and shacking up in shepherd’s huts.  Thanks to the likes of Airbnb and Home Swap, we’re even holidaying in each other’s homes.

Now, with Beds on Board, you can spend the night on a luxury yacht, for less than the  price of a Travelodge. But there’ll be no sailing off into the sunset – all boats are safely moored in marinas and moving them is strictly against the rules.

Beds on Board’s Mark Seamer tells me how it all began. In 2015, founder Tim Ludlow was at a busy regatta in Palma, Mallorca, struggling to find accommodation. All the hotels in town were fully booked and there was not a room to be had, but as Tim strolled along the waterfront, he noticed that most of the yachts in the marina were empty. That was the lightbulb moment.

At any given time 90% of yachts in UK marinas are empty, Mark explains, so  Beds on Board was created to connect their owners with accommodation seekers. ‘It’s essentially Airbnb for boats’, he says.

It’s such a good idea and I can’t wait to take up Mark’s invitation to try it for myself.

How it works

The booking process is refreshingly simple. I sign up to the website, choose my required dates, destination and number of guests, and I’m given a selection of fancy boats to choose from. I select a gorgeous two-bedroom yacht called Amana, which the site tells me is a Sunseeker Camargue 50. She’s moored in Lymington Yacht Haven, in the desirable New Forest area. 

It’s not as pricey as you might expect. In March, Amana costs £195 a night, which is less than some hotels in the area. 

As bonkers as it sounds, staying on a yacht can be an economical choice for families, given that most have at least two bedrooms and so work out cheaper than checking into multiple hotel rooms.

Once I’ve booked, the boat owner has 48 hours to accept or reject my reservation. Later that day,  I’m contacted by Jason, the friendly owner of Amana. He’s incredibly welcoming and happy to answer all my questions.

‘Can I bring my dog?’ I ask, wincing as I scroll through photos of Amana’s soft, white leather interiors. ‘Of course!’ Jason responds, to my delight. That evening, I flounce into the living room and  announce to my husband that we’re all off to stay on a yacht.

Just like Airbnb, when guests arrive at the start of their stay, they’re met either by the boat owner or by his or her representative.  My husband and I are met by Jason’s rep, the charming Samantha, at Lymington Yacht Haven. Check-in starts at 3pm and Amana is bathed in golden afternoon light when we first step onboard.

I’m struck by how immaculate she is and silently congratulate myself for packing a dog towel.  The deck is spotless and we’re welcomed by a vase of fresh daffodils and bottle of wine in an ice bucket. I know we’re going to love it here. There’s even a packet of Captain Jack dog biscuits for our four-legged companion, Flint. 

Inside, the walnut interiors glisten and plump towels are waiting on our bed. There’s a kitchen (galley in boat-speak) with all mod-cons, including a hob, microwave and to my husband’s delight, a Nespreso coffee machine.

A white leather sofa stretches the length of the living room and there’s a fold-out dining table. At either end of the boat are two en-suite bedrooms with showers.

Samantha gives us the lowdown on how everything works, but since we won’t be sailing anywhere, there’s nothing to be intimidated by. It’s mostly a case of getting to grips with the heating and making sure we know where the bottle opener is.

Jason’s detailed welcome pack invites us to help ourselves to tea and coffee. He’s even left us beer and wine, along with an honesty tin (which is so honest that there’s already money in there when we arrive).

A taste of the high-life

Even without the prospect of a cruise, being on the boat is exciting. Reclining on deck with a glass of something cold as the sun sets over the water, we feel like interlopers in a world we’d never normally have access to. A boat like this would cost thousands to charter, but here we are – and for tonight, it’s all ours.

Marinas, by their very nature, are in pretty places with great restaurants, and the beauty of a Beds on Board stay is that you’re never far from a scenic waterfront stroll or great evening out.

That being said, a night onboard can be just as fun as going out. Unlike a hotel room, you can cook for yourselves and enjoy a meal on deck watched by expectant seagulls, or cuddle up in-front of a film as the sea gently rocks you to sleep (Amana has Sky and a hefty DVD collection).

Lymington Yacht Haven neighbours a picturesque nature reserve. When we eventually tear ourselves away from the boat, we walk Flint along the seawall, looking down on ducks bobbing about in the salt marshes. A footpath called Solent Way runs from the marina all the way to Milford on Sea, hugging the coast. It’s a pretty five mile walk, but we only manage one or two, before our wimpy city dog starts dragging his feet.

We arrived in Lymington under a warm sun, but this being March in England, by the time we go to bed the wind is howling and rain thunders down on the roof. But we’re on a big boat, so a storm is thrilling! There’s something deliciously comforting about snuggling under a heavy duvet as the weather rages outside.

The next morning we awake to pale sunlight streaming in through the portholes, seagulls cawing softly and a text from boat owner Jason. He wants to know if we slept alright and survived the weather. ‘Do you have everything you need?’, he asks. Jason tells us to stay as long as want, even though check-out is officially at 11am.

Staying on Amana is like spending the night in a luxury hotel, with the personal touches of a family-run b&b. Even though we never meet Jason in person, I’ve rarely stayed anywhere where I’ve felt so looked after.

Unsurprisingly, this new accommodation trend  is catching on and Beds on Board now has boats in over 50 countries.  It’s impressive stuff from such a young company and Mark is excited about the future. ‘Our aim is to offer travellers a million new beds around the world, without doing a single bit of construction.’

Back in London, I brag to friends about our weekend on a yacht (for under £200) and they all react in the same way – what a brilliant idea! They all say they’re going to try it. After all, w ho wouldn’t want to enjoy the glorious yachting lifestyle without the responsibility or the price tag that go with it?

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

• Ultra-luxury cruise line  Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.
• The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.
• Emerald, known for river cruises, has been investing more in its ocean-based business.

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

Yes, the ships look like yachts. And yes, they're marketed as such.

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

Emerald’s upcoming 393-foot-long, 128-guest Kaia would be perfect for fans of small, high-end ships.

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.

DC/Dox has unveiled the lineup for its second annual edition, which takes place in Washington, D.C., from June 13-16. The documentary festival will kick things off with “ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story ,” the Warner Bros. Discovery film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

In April, Sitney revealed that Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” was one of four docus that would make up DC/Dox’s Signature Screenings section. The remaining three docus in the program are: Lana Wilson’s “Look Into My Eyes” (DC/Dox Centerpiece film), Dawn Porter’s “Luther: Never Too Much” (DC/Dox Spotlight film), and Sally Aitkin’s “Every Little Thing” (DC/Dox Closing Night film). Each docu premiered at Sundance 2024.

“These four signature films capture important aspects of our human experience: resilience in the face of adversity, the beauty found in small acts of kindness, the power of art and music to unite people in our shared humanity, and the universal desire to find higher meaning in our lives,” said Sitney.

Six feature docus will make their world premieres at DC/Dox: They are: AJ Schnack’s “Majority Rules,” about Alaska’s decision to use ranked-choice voting; Catherine Gund’s “Paint Me a Road Out of Here,” about Faith Ringgold’s painting “For the Women’s House”; Bridget Hunnicutt’s “Breaking the West,” about a Russian oligarch’s ambitions in the West; Alexandra Shiva and Lindsey Megrue’s observational portrait of a psychiatric unit for young adults titled “One South: Portrait of a Psyche Ward”; Ross Kauffman’s “Wild Wild Space” an exploration of private companies jostling for dominance in space; and Asako Gladsjo’s “The Calling, which follows a group of medical students in the Bronx.

DC/Dox will also screen the North American premieres of Peter Middleton’s “Apollo Thirteen: Survival,” which chronicles the almost disastrous NASA mission, and Chad Freidrichs’ “The Cinema Within” about the art and science of film editing. Jeremy Xido’s “The Bones,” an examination of the high-stakes world of dinosaur bone trading, will make its U.S. premiere at the fest. The doc premiered in March at CPH:Dox.

“With this second edition, DC/Dox continues to provide a festival experience that can only be found in the nation’s capital,” says DC/Dox co-founder Jamie Shor. “This festival allows filmmakers the unique opportunity to connect with an audience that can be influencers and amplifiers of their work, as well as appreciators.”
