The lowdown
GYC lays the down-market BK ironica on thick: the name; cheap cans of PBR; food served on paper plates. But none of the neighborhood’s hipster drinkers mind, and it’s no wonder. The low-key, beach-frontish vibe, the entirely open-air environs (on a corner where it’s easy to inadvertently enter the bar thinking you were descending into the subway), and the festive throng make this an ideal place to while away a sunny summer afternoon or warm evening slugging back beers without breaking the bank. Because it lacks any indoor space, GYC is open only from late spring to early autumn — which means locals make sure to cram in as much quality time here as they can during the limited schedule. The roster of bars in this hood is surprisingly segmented — one type hangs out exclusively here, another exclusively there — but everyone comes together at Gowanus Yacht Club, where the sand-in-your-flip-flops, sit-on-your-beach-towel-so-you-don’t-get-the-chair-wet aesthetic is utterly irresistible.

Time out says.
In a city overrun with excessively styled nightspots, there’s a lot to be said for the “come in and drink beer” manifesto of one seasonal haunt. Squeezed next to an F-G subway entrance and Bagels by the Park, the GYC an outdoor beer garden for ironic, scruffy types has a garage sale–meets–fraternity house decor. On cool nights, bartenders may fire up the potbellied stove to take the chill off. The half-barrel grill is usually glowing, so you can chow down on bockwurst, then slake your thirst with a pitcher of Dentengem’s Witbier.
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

This place was not where I thought it would be. Once we literally bumped into the Club, it was fun. Super relaxing post-hang out in Red Hook. Good middle ground between home and the Red Hook brunch I had that day. Good beers. I hear the food is decent. They don't have fries.
Lots of good and bad things about this place, mostly good. Since its an outdoor bar, only open during the warmer months. They do have some eats if you are hungry, more typically bbq type food. Not very good, but when drinking beer outside, any kind of bbq is pretty good. Beer selection is ok. Seating outdoors is a good thing, but the con is that people end up smoking, and if you are unlucky you will be the recipient of someone's second hand smoke for the hours that you hang out there.
I go here spontaneously. I don't plan it. It's the best for what it is: an outdoor place that is laid back with sausage and beer.
Cheep beer and good outdoor seating. I haven't had any of the food, and wasn't a fan of the couple that brought their four year old, so until further review, 3 stars.
The Gowanus Yacht Club's name is strictly tongue-in-cheek. It is not near the water and calling it a dive is generous. That being said, on a beautiful summer day, you can't find a much better place to hang out and smash a few cold beers. It is completely outdoors and super cramped, but once you get a seat the service is fast. We didn't try the food, but how can you really screw up burgers and dogs even if they are frozen?
This place gives me exactly what I want out of it. Cheap beer, outdoors, grilled foods, convenient location, and quirkiness. Anyone drawn to this place has that thing in common.. what thing? I have no idea... but for some reason, it's always easy to bust out in conversation with random people about strange things.
I was more into this place when I first moved here a year and a half ago, but am less into it now. I still think the bar is cute, the crowd fun, and the prices/selection OK, but basically, the reason I stopped going here is because I have come to find the quality of the service poor, and the bartender/waitresses unfriendly and pretentious. Really, in a neighborhood with as many great bars as Carroll Gardens, there is simply no reason to put up with that, so I don't.
Just an awesome place to relax and enjoy beer and friends. The pickles are yummy and only $1!
Everything about this place is basic. Not simple and unpretentious. Basic. And basically its a pretty good place to hang out.
Seriously good summer fun. Picnic tables, fun people and good pitchers. They even had grapefruit shandy on a particularly hot day.

The beloved Brooklyn hang only opens during the sunshine months, and this past weekend it unlocked its gate to the beer drinking, hot dog eating masses.
How did the bar become named Gowanus Yacht Club? The canal is two blocks away and needs all the help it can get.
How was opening night this year? It was great, the toilet didn't break.
Will there be any changes this season? Trivia, bingo and free yoga on Sundays, namaste.
What's the most ordered food item, and most popular beer? Hot dogs by far, cooked in Sweet Action by Six Point.
What's the best part about working at GYC? The people....it's all about the people.
Please regale us with one of your worst customer stories. In general it would have to be the annoying habit that people have of carrying most of their worldly belongings in a valise or some sort of suitcase.
What's the current GYC soundtrack? Right now its the radio; I like Hal Jackson on Sunday morning.
Given the opportunity, how would you change New York? Less government, more farmers markets.
Under what circumstance have you thought about leaving New York? Anthrax or a dirty bomb.
Which New Yorker do you most admire? Brent, the carpenter who works for beer.
Can you please recommend a good weekend hang-out that isn't unbearably mobbed? Coffey St. Pier, or any Catholic church.
What's the best subway line? The F train unless you are Vong the cook...R.I.P. buddy.
Yankees or Mets? Mets
Best cheap eat in the city? Right here baby, unless you want to go freegan.
Best venue to see music? WFUV
