Larendael introduces the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

super yacht tech campus

Larendael has announced the launch of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, an innovative location for the construction, refit, and maintenance of superyachts. Following the acquisition of the historic 53 ha shipyard located in the western port area of Amsterdam in August 2021 , Larendael has unveiled their plans to develop a Campus that can host several superyachts, up to 200 meters in length, for design, production, maintenance, and refits at the lauded site. Unique to this Campus will be its ability to provide the space required for the manifold stages of superyacht production from design to completion, the quantity of superyachts that can be accommodated, and an exceptional environment for both training and education.

Innovation is the essence of the company’s vision in every aspect of the Campus’s design. Their facilities are thoughtfully arranged and stream-lined to conveniently stimulate collaboration at all phases of design and construction. The Campus will provide a leading edge, open environment where students, professionals, and visitors alike can view and participate in the creation of these exquisite yachts. Additionally, we are committed to seeking opportunities to benefit from alternative fuels for a more sustainable process of manufacturing and ship building materials, preserving our Campus as a leader now and into the future for superyacht production.

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 metres and three large docks with a length of up to 155 metres. These dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht lift will be available for yachts up to 80 metres, allowing maintenance to be carried out ashore. Outside, there will be room for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 metres long, with a water depth of up to 13 metres.

Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael: “With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history; the location where the former leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), was active in the 18th and 19th century”.

Wim Beelen , Creative Founder: In 2020, Wim Beelen sold the company he founded, Beelen, a sustainable contractor in the demolition sector, recycler of construction and demolition residues and processor of industrial waste. He changed course and started Larendael. The development of the sustainable last mile concept, the first multi-story xxl logistics city hub, in Amsterdam brought him back to the water. A place where he also likes to spend his free time, because water makes the world a lot bigger. At Larendael, he wants to stimulate and use the open-mindedness of the young generation. In addition, he wants to be primarily occupied with things that give him energy. Building projects from the ground up and making them into something beautiful and unique.

Larendael concludes: “With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus we create an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability can flourish. By offering economies of scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions – both by water and by land – we uniquely provide yacht builders and suppliers a place for the expansion and enrichment of the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry, not only in size but also in quality”.

Dutch businessman starts building vast superyacht hub in Amsterdam

By Robert Wielaard

super yacht tech campus

AMSTERDAM – Construction has begun on a large superyacht hub in the Port of Amsterdam. The “Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus” will be the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands when it is due to open in 2026.

The project is the brainchild of Wim Beelen, a businessman who made his fortune in the salvaging industry. In August 2021, his Larendael investment vehicle acquired 53 acres of land and private water in the Port of Amsterdam “to develop something unique.”

It said the location – a rundown port area – would be turned into a ‘Superyacht Campus’ boasting half a dozen covered docks for superyachts of up to 200m (656ft) in length. Also, there will be a lift for yachts up to 80m (263ft). In all, the site is to offer deep-water space for 40 superyachts.

“Currently, huge sheet pile walls are being installed …  near the location where the campus is rising so quays can be built,” Wim Beelen said in mid-March 2023. “Hopefully, we will be able to receive the first yachts soon.”

Lured by the Dutch superyacht sector’s health, size and quality, Beelen has unfolded an ambitious vision for his Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus. He sees the Dutch sector building ever larger. The largest to date is the 127m Koru that Oceanco expects to deliver this year to Amazon owner Jeff Bezos.

The complex is strategically located on a deep-water canal linking the Port of Amsterdam to the North Sea, 18.6 mi (30 km) away.

“The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus,” says Beelen, “provides employment and training places for a lot of people. The demand for yacht building has risen considerably in recent years. The Netherlands is among the world’s top yacht builders. The arrival of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus can further strengthen this position and grow employment in this sector.”

Beelen’s timing looks right. There are a dozen shipyards in the Netherlands that make highly customized superyachts. But as these get longer, most toil in increasingly cramped facilities.

super yacht tech campus

Beelen is a disrupter who exploits waterfront development opportunities. In 2021, after buying a chunk of the Port of Amsterdam,  the latter sued him, saying his development plan violated port rules. However, in June 2022, an appeals court vacated that finding. It said the port illegally claimed rights to waters it does not own.

Beelen expects his superyacht facility to be operational in 2026. It will be available to all comers who want to build, maintain or refit a superyacht of any length. It will also be a campus offering training facilities.

Larendael introduces Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

the most innovative location for the construction, refit and maintenance of superyachts

On the 42 ha shipyard acquired by Larendael at the end of August in the Western Docklands of Amsterdam, we are going to develop a campus where several superyachts up to 200 meters can be designed and built. Refits and maintenance of super yachts can also be carried out here, both from private owners and from other shipyards. Uniquely, the Campus will offer the opportunity to design and produce the entire yacht on site, as well as provide space for training.

Innovation is central to the concept of the Campus. We invest in facilities and technical resources to encourage collaboration where possible, with open innovation as the goal. Examples include the search for alternative fuels, but we also see opportunities to make the construction process and the materials used in the ships more sustainable.

Demand for superyachts increases

There are currently some 5,500 superyachts in the world and nearly 200 are added each year. There is particularly high demand from America, the Far East, Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our country has been known worldwide for centuries for its many boat builders. With our quality, reliability, innovation and design, the Netherlands also belongs to the world's top in building superyachts. Superyachts are also becoming increasingly larger. In the past five years, 67 superyachts with a length of more than 50 meters were built in the Netherlands alone. To be able to build and maintain these large super yachts, shipyards are needed that are easily accessible and have the right facilities.

Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 meters and three large docks with a length of up to 155 meters. In addition, these dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht elevator will be available for yachts up to 80 meters, allowing maintenance to take place ashore. Outside, there will be space for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 meters long, with a water depth of up to 13 meters.

Wim Beelen (Creative Founder, Larendael):  "With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping at a place with a rich history, namely where the leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), operated in the 18th and 19th centuries."

Stimulating environment

With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are creating an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability are central. By offering an increase in scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions - both via the water and via the land, we offer superyacht yards and suppliers every opportunity to further expand the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry not only in size but also in quality.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

UW unveils intellectual property models to build industry partnerships

From new options for cancer diagnosis and treatment, to improved wireless communications, researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison are developing game-changing innovations for the marketplace with the support of industry partners.

But fostering these industry-university research partnerships has historically depended on negotiating terms that at times has required a lot of back and forth and uncertainty.

Now, an intellectual property model adopted by UW–Madison is making it easier and faster for university researchers to license laboratory discoveries to businesses and entrepreneurs who can then turn them into important and even life-saving commercial products.

With the Badger IP Industry Advantage program, companies interested in conducting research through the university can avoid some of the speed bumps that have slowed the transfer of technology from research to product. The program will make research agreements and associated intellectual property licensing more transparent, simpler and mostly negotiation-free on fair terms.

“With the Badger IP Industry Advantage program, we are better equipped to create partnerships that build on UW–Madison research discoveries to bring new products to market that address society’s emerging challenges,” says Cynthia Czajkowski, interim vice chancellor for research .

UW–Madison is a global research powerhouse, spending more than $1.5 billion annually on groundbreaking inquiries.

“To remain among the best in a competitive research environment and to realize the Wisconsin Idea, we need industry partners,” Czajkowski says. “We also know that real-world projects benefit our researchers, students and industry alike.

With the Advantage program, companies interested in partnering on research with UW faculty and staff can lock in greater financial certainty for access to intellectual property.

The three Badger IP Industry Advantage models  — The Classic, The Bascom and The Varsity — represent the most common ways industry can partner with the university for research purposes. The names are a nod to UW’s storied history in the cycle of research, discovery, commercialization, and its pride in the Wisconsin Idea.

  • The Classic is the best option for sponsors who desire maximum flexibility in contract terms. It provides, with no upfront fee, a traditional approach of waiting until intellectual property is created to negotiate a license to arising technology.
  • The Varsity is a good option for sponsors who prefer to evaluate the technology before deciding on licensing options and want certainty on nonexclusive access to resulting patents while also retaining an option for exclusive rights.
  • The Bascom is a good option for sponsors who want access to exclusive rights under resulting patents for a fixed and predictable cost.

Under the new program, the UW principal investigator and business sponsor must mutually agree on the selected model.

“IP is a complex topic, and the IP models in the Advantage program help us to communicate IP expectations for agreements more clearly,” explains Chris Kozina, assistant vice chancellor industry engagement. “Businesses appreciate flexibility, simplicity and knowing where to go for information. We now have a shared view across UW–Madison schools and colleges about expectations in working with outside partners. And we have designed these models with mutual benefit in mind for all parties involved.”

“There may be instances where a company wants something other than the terms offered through the Badger IP Industry Advantage,” explains Bob Gratzl, assistant director of contracts for Research and Sponsored Programs . “And we can always negotiate. But in most cases, we’re offering the best possible option upfront with the three models.”

Moving the needle on IP agreements came during UW–Madison’s successful 2022 application for designation as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.

APLU awarded UW–Madison this designation based on the university’s significant, sustainable and campus-wide commitment to economic engagement, including its past and future focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development and public service and community engagement.

“Companies both in and out of state have told us that they have been waiting for this,” says John Garnetti, director of the Office of Business Engagement . These models help us to better communicate what was already possible and approved. I think this will streamline the process and eliminate a lot of confusion upfront.”

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation also has been an essential partner in the process. WARF was created by University of Wisconsin visionaries in 1925 as the university’s designated patenting and licensing organization. Unlike any other university technology transfer office in the nation, WARF covers all the costs of UW–Madison intellectual property commercialization and defense.

“I think as more businesses see how terrific UW–Madison researchers are — how fast, and creative and committed they are — this program will grow quickly and become a major bridge between the university and industry,” says Michael Falk, chief intellectual property and licensing officer for WARF. “What is especially exciting about this new program from our perspective is that it will increase the quantity and breadth of business partnerships. This is good for our professors and other researchers because it opens new areas of research and provides the resources to pursue cutting-edge research. And it is good for all of us because this program will speed up the transfer of early-stage technologies to real world applications.”

UW–Madison, along with the State of Wisconsin, is poised to drive a significant increase in innovation and economic growth, bolstered by new federal funding and strengthened partnerships between academia and industry. The Advantage program plays an important role in that plan.

The university recently joined a consortium of 15 public and private partners in a Phase 2 application to the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration Regional Technology & Innovation Hub program. Wisconsin is among 31 regions that had been selected for the highly competitive Phase 1 Tech Hub designation.

“As a leading global  public  research university, it is our responsibility to ensure that our work has public benefit. We want potential industry partners to look at the great research we do here at UW–Madison and get excited,’” Czajkowski says. “And then, together, we get to work.”

Virginia Tech's Spring Open House

Virginia Tech's Spring Open House

The largest number of prospective students to date attended Virginia Tech’s Spring Open House on March 16-17. Virginia Tech welcomed 2,823 students and guests on Saturday, and 2,837 on Sunday.

Spring Open House offers prospective students and their families a chance to explore admissions and financial aid, academic opportunities, and student services. Students also experience the  beauty of the Blacksburg campus , learn more about the university’s  programs of study , and get a taste of life campus life. In addition, Open House allows prospective students to get to know other students and form early friendships, sample the food at dining halls, meet professors, view housing options, and visit the Blacksburg community for recreation, shopping, and other interests.

“I think this record attendance shows a continuation of the growing interest in Virginia Tech as a premiere destination for top talent,” said Greg Carter, director of strategic enrollment communications and marketing. “The campus visit experience is often the motivation behind many of our prospects naming Virginia Tech as their top choice. We will have to wait and see if this record number of attendees translates to another year of record applications next cycle, but it certainly is a promising sign.”

In 2018, Virginia Tech changed its admissions process, adopting a more holistic review process. In addition, the university began collecting self-reported academic information and streamlined the fee waiver application process. These changes resulted in a larger, higher quality, and more diverse pool of applicants seeking admission.

In 2023, for the fourth straight year, the number of first-year applications to Virginia Tech hit a historic high at 52,365 applications submitted – an increase of 11 percent over last year. First-year applications have increased more than 50 percent since 2018.

The fall 2024 applicant pool is also the strongest in the school's history when measured by academics. The average GPA of all 2024 applicants was 4.07, compared to 4.06 in 2023. Noteworthy gains include

  • 8,059 applicants identified as first-generation college students, a 3.5 percent increase from last year
  • 20,610 in-state applicants, up 4.5 percent
  • 26,696 out-of-state applicants, a 12 percent increase
  • 5,059 international applicants, up from 3,591 last year

"Four record years of first-year applications continue to affirm that the transformational changes made in 2018 have made Virginia Tech a place that students can see themselves calling home for their undergraduate education and beyond," said Kayla Nichols, interim associate vice provost for enrollment management and director of undergraduate admissions. "We are proud of our innovative recruitment strategy. It allows us to emphasize access and affordability while also highlighting Virginia Tech’s community, school spirit, and strong academic opportunities.”

Other opportunities to visit Virginia Tech this spring through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions include High School Spring Break and Hokie Focus.

High School Spring Break , March 25-29 and April 1-4, offers high school students the opportunity to participate in an admissions information session, learn about student life, get a feel for the campus experience, and see what it means to be a Hokie.

Hokie Focus , April 6-7, is an invitation-only program for first-year students who were offered admission to Virginia Tech.

For students who are unable to attend those events, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions offers daily information sessions and tours whenever classes are in session. There are also virtual visit resources for those who are unable to make it to campus but want to explore Virginia Tech on their own schedule.

“It is clear that students are attracted to the impact that Virginia Tech is having as our motto,  Ut Prosim ( That I May Serve), drives us forward as an institution to do wonderful and innovative things,” Nichols said. “We are excited to welcome the Class of 2028 this fall and look forward to recruiting future classes of Hokies.”

Explosions occurred in Moscow region, several settlements lost power

E xplosions were heard in the town of Lytkarino, Moscow region, tonight, November 23. Several settlements in the Moscow region are without power, according to Baza.

Around 1 a.m., local residents allegedly heard a bright flash from the substation. Afterward, the lights went out in the Lytkarivsky district. A fire reportedly broke out at the site of the explosion.

According to Russian media, power was lost in several settlements in the Moscow region.

It should be noted that Lytkarino is situated 30 kilometers from the Russian capital.

Shots fired in Russia

In 2023, the number of attacks in a number of regions of the Russian Federation by attack drones increased. Also, something often burns and explodes on the territory of Russia. Different regions, including Moscow, are under attack.

At the same time, Ukrainian intelligence has already warned residents of the Russian capital that they should hardly relax, as the number of drone attacks will only increase.

In particular, on the evening of November 10, explosions occurred near the Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering corporation in the Moscow region, where Kinzhals and Iskandars are manufactured.

One of the largest attacks took place on the night of July 30, when unidentified drones struck the business center of the Russian capital, Moscow City. The drones hit the so-called "government tower," which houses the offices of the Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Ministry of Communications.

Brigadier General Sergei Baranov recently said that Ukrainian troops are preparing for a large-scale winter attack on various regions of Russia with the help of kamikaze drones.
