YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE, DON'T WASTE A MINUTE OF IT!

BEAUTIFUL NEW BOATS, IMPECCABLE MAINTENANCE, AND FRIENDLY, KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware.

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

What People Are Saying . . .

The Osborn Family

VIYC was one of the best charter companies we've used. They keep their word and honor their promises. They promptly fix stuff and immediately talk us through solvable problems. They know the boat, the waters, and sailing area, the culture.

Scuby's operations briefing was one of the best I've attended in my years of chartering.

                                                                                                                                       ~Fred Osborn

I had the pleasure of chartering a yacht from Virgin Islands Yacht Charters out of Compass Point, St Thomas.  I have chartered numerous yachts over the years; as well as operated by own charter sailing yacht for five years.  Kristi and Jim, the owners, do an outstanding job of assuring the yacht is ready to go and in top shipshape.  Any follow up or support if needed is prompt and efficient.  I highly recommend Virgin Islands Yacht Charters.

Fun at The Baths

Jim & Kristi,

Thanks so much for completing our experience. Our past charter experiences in the BVI were a mixed bag of paradise, apathetic service, and mechanically challenged yachts. God made the islands beautiful, you two made sailing them a pleasure by providing friendly service and an excellent line of yachts. This experience felt less like a charter and more like borrowing a great boat from old friends.

We’ll be back…                                                                                          ~Rev. Seth Sundstrom

US Virgin Islands yacht charter

Yacht charter holidays are best for the most luxurious destinations in the world. In terms of being the playground of the rich and famous, the US Virgin Islands is definitely one of the best on the list. Located in the Caribbean, and home to 3 major islands and dozens of smaller islands nearby, its warm and tropical climate, as well as calm, protected waters, have long been a favorite for yacht enthusiasts. For one of the most unforgettable yacht charter holidays you can have, the US Virgin Islands is definitely a must-visit.

Why charter a yacht in the US Virgin Islands?

The US Virgin Islands is one of the world's sailing paradise. Offering ideal cruising grounds for yachts of all kinds, short distances between the islands, and plenty of beautiful beaches and diving sites, it's no surprise that the USVI's (as it's also called), is one of the top yacht charter destinations in the world. You can hop on a plane from Miami and enjoy a direct flight to St. Thomas, the biggest of the Virgin Islands, then charter a yacht in any of the marinas at the capital, Charlotte Amelie. With an abundance of itineraries, a yacht charter in the Virgin Islands is the best way to explore the beautiful scenery and culture.

What are yacht charter prices in the US Virgin Islands?

Choose from a catamaran, a monohull, a motor yacht, superyachts, and megayachts from the wide array of yacht charter offerings on the islands. A 42-foot cruising monohull can cost around $4000 for a week's charter for 6 people on board. At the same time, a sailing catamaran can cost about $9,200 for a group of 8 people. A 140-feet trimaran can cost around $70,000 per week for a group of 9, while a 230-foot megayacht can cost about $500,000 per week. Virgin Islands welcome a substantial number of megayachts that are like resorts of their own on the waters - complete with anything - from a fully-equipped gym, sauna, spa, to gourmet dining with Michelin star chefs, and even a helipad on the boat.

When is the yachting season in the US Virgin Islands?

The US Virgin Islands offer tropical weather almost all-year-round, except for the months of July to October, which is hurricane season. Since the islands belong to the hurricane belt, yacht charters are very scarce during these months. That means yachting season in the islands start in November and end in June or July. The best time for a yacht charter in the Virgin Islands is the early months of summer in the Caribbean, which are the months of March to July, with nonexistent rainfall and the sunniest skies you can ever imagine.

US Virgin Islands yacht charter for a day

If you're pressed for time and have only one day for a yacht charter adventure, then a trip to St. John is a definite must. For a full day yacht charter, you have to start early in the morning to take full advantage of your yacht charter for a day. St. John is the smallest island in the USVI's, and it's directly located to the east of St. Thomas. About 60% of the land is home to a pristine national park, making hiking and walking around the inland an adventure you shouldn't miss. You can also swim in the beautiful beaches, shop in the eclectic stores, and dive into the beautiful Caneel Bay. Enjoy the day snorkeling, sailing, having lunch on board, then hiking the trails inland, and enjoying the vast activities on offer at St. John.

US Virgin Islands yacht charter overnight

An overnight yacht charter is perfect if you have two days to explore the different gems of the US Virgin Islands. Start your cruise along the beaches and bay of St. Thomas, then head over to St. John, where you can enjoy a bevy of activities inland and on the beach. Anchor at Caneel Bay, then in the morning, head your way to either St, Croix, for its sugar cane plantations, or visit the small island of Water Island, which is only 490 acres large and only joined the US in 1996. The island is considered a hidden gem that is perfect for hiking, meeting friendly and local people, and a short bike tour of the island. Head back to the marina in St. Thomas at the end of the day.

US Virgin Islands yacht charter for a week

And of course, if you truly want to experience the quintessential yacht charter adventure in the US Virgin Islands, a one-week liveaboard is the best way to do that. Here is a sample itinerary for your one-week liveaboard:

Day 1: St. Thomas Magens Bay

Magens Bay is the most popular beach in St. Thomas, and it's also considered as one of the best beaches in the world, according to National Geographic. A haven of calm waters with the secluded shoreline, where you can relax on the remote beach, paddleboard, kayak, and enjoy a day of relaxation and tranquility on a hammock or on a beach towel under the shade of a tree. You can also enjoy the Discovery Nature Trail, which is home to mangroves and coconut groves.

Day 2: Druif Bay

Explore Druif Bay and its famous Fort Segarra, an underground built by the US during WW2. Have dinner on the boat and enjoy the skies while relaxing on a trampoline on the deck before calling it a day

Day 3: Charlotte Amelie

The US Virgin Islands capital is home to hundreds of stores, offering everything from high-end clothing to jewelry to small treats and souvenirs. This city is a duty-free shopping mecca, perfect for anyone who has shopping on your list of things to do on holiday. Head over to Frenchtown for its international and artisanal cuisines, dance to the beat of island music at any local bar in the evening. Head back to your boat for the night to wake up in the morning with the beautiful sunrise of the Caribbean.

Day 4: Christmas Cove

Located on the east coast of St. Thomas, this sheltered oasis on Great St. James Island is home to sea turtles and beautiful marine life. A great spot for snorkeling and diving, those who don't wish to enjoy the waters can head inland and enjoy the range of seafood restaurants serving freshly-caught lobster.

Day 5 and 6: Coral Bay and Leinster Bay in St. John

For the ultimate island living experience, Coral Bay offers the best Caribbean experience for its laid back, beachside atmosphere. Leinster Bay is the number one spot for snorkeling at St. John and should not be missed.

Day 7: Trunk Bay

Trunk Bay is dubbed as the crown jewel of the US Virgin Islands. It is home to some of the region's best beaches, and its underwater world is home to over 650 feet of underwater trails, perfect for diving and snorkeling. Head back to St. Thomas at the end of the day to end your one-week yacht charter liveaboard.

Wedding yacht charter in the Virgin Islands

Whether you want a memorable wedding on the beach or on the yacht, there's plenty of opportunities for a yacht charter wedding in the USVI's. A yacht charter for a wedding presents you with exceptional private beaches to have your ceremony and party, while a wedding yacht charter onboard offers a unique touch and style to a party.

Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

A family group that we booked aboard 56' Catamaran Viramar in January 2022 said:

First of all, the trip exceeded our expectations in every way. We also do not feel like we gave up anything in not going to the BVI and only sailing the USVI. Yes, there were probably some great things in the BVI, but every day and every stop in the USVI was great. Hopefully, we plan to do another charter - where and when, we do not know - in a couple of years. Lynne, thanks for your help as well. Your communications and understanding of the COVID situation were great. Jeff T., Washington

Julia of 12 Knots was excellent to work with and helped to ensure that my family and I had a wonderful charter experience in the US VIs. 12 Knots is an extremely professional broker, facilitating our rental of an excellent yacht in the smoothest way …

“Everything was arranged as planned”

We chartered 2 sailing catamarans for a 10 day USVI/BVI vacation and everything was arranged as planned. Good communication, good service, no surprises. The boats were in perfect shape and we had a great time.

Are you looking for a place to recharge, relax, and set your spirit free? If so, the U.S. Virgin Islands should be at the top of your sailing vacation list. This chain of 50 Caribbean islands offers a picturesque oasis for sailing and yachting that you’ll never want to return from.

St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands is considered the sailing capital of the Caribbean. The beautiful waters, ideal wind conditions, and favorable temperatures make it perfect for both novice and experienced sailors alike. If this is your first sailing vacation, choose the U.S. Virgin Islands for an unforgettable experience as you navigate the waters by sailing boat or catamaran.

12 Knots offers both bareboat and crewed yacht charters for anyone interested in visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands. We offer two types of boat rentals with the option to either skipper your own sailboat or have one of our crews take care of the heavy lifting. 12 Knots takes care of every detail of your trip to ensure your sailing vacation is truly relaxing.

Things To Do In The U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands have a variety of activities both in the uninhabited islets and cays, as well as on the largest islands of  St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and Water Island. The archipelago was settled by Europeans from several counties, making the culture of the U.S. Virgin Islands an exciting blend from around the world. The U.S. Virgin Islands offers plenty of shopping, seafood, and wildlife adventure to enjoy during your stay.

St. John has a beautiful national park that is perfect for hiking and taking a relaxing swim on the shore of Trunk Bay. Many consider Trunk Bay to be the most beautiful of all beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is a must-see whether you sail to it or begin your trip on St. John.

For a glimpse of history, you may drop an anchor at St. Croix and visit the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. This restored plantation house rests on 12 acres of picturesque hills and shows what Caribbean life was like during colonial days. St. Croix also sits on a large coral reef, perfect for a day mooring and half-day of snorkeling.

If rent a yacht in St. Thomas it will also offer you some of the best duty-free shopping selections in all of the Caribbean. Whether you’re looking for local boutiques or designer clothing and electronics, St. Thomas is the place to go for most of your shopping. As you walk along Main Street, you’ll find everything you need.

Sailing conditions in the US Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are known worldwide for their ideal sailing conditions. The northeastern trade winds are strong in the wintertime, but otherwise you can expect calm waters, warm temperatures, and an overall pleasant sailing experience. The weather is warm year-round with an average temperature between 75ºF and 82ºF.

The seas range from three to four feet throughout the year, and wind speeds average from 10 to 25 knots throughout the year. The Christmas winds reach the highest speeds and allow an experienced skipper to sail for several days back to back. However, if you are a novice sailor, springtime will provide easier sailing conditions.

Best time for sailing vacation

Typically the winter and early spring months are the best times to sail in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The trade winds are strongest in December, January, February and the beginning of March. The weather is nice and cool, but can be a bit chilly for swimming. If you want to venture into the Virgin Islands on a bareboat charter, this is the best time to go.

However, if you are a novice sailor or interested in a crewed yacht charter, the spring and early fall months can be a good alternative. The winds are typically less strong in the summer and June to August are the best months for swimming since the water temperature rises significantly. This period also offers best prices for yacht charters however you should be aware of possible weather changes as this is a beginning of the hurricane season that usually runs from August to October.

The fall offers wind speeds of 10-15 knots on average which can be perfect for beginners to navigate the seas by sailing boat or catamaran. However, this is when the hurricane season is strongest, so be careful about when you plan your sailing trip. Fall can be ideal for crewed yacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

If you consider yacht charter for Christmas or New Year we strongly recommend to make all arrangements and bookings far in advance. The number of charter boats in US Virgin Islands is quite limited and usually prices second half of December significantly go up. But if you make boat reservation 6 or more months in advance you may get good early booking discount.

Difficulty level

Sailing the U.S. Virgin Islands is ideal for beginners and experienced skippers alike. Depending on the season you can experience relaxed sailing or more challenging conditions. The U.S. Virgin Islands offers a variety of calm bays, short passages between the islands, strong trade winds, and vast expanses of water to tailor your experience to your skill level.

Line of sight navigation, moderate waves and consistent trade winds, will make novice sailors feel most comfortable in the U.S. Virgin Islands as opposed to other Caribbean areas. Most of the major islands are close together, so you won’t have to sail for more than a few hours between them.

Main charter bases

Almost all yacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands will start in St. Thomas. Main charter bases are located in Compass Point and Red Hook marina, offering professionally maintained sailing boats, catamarans and power boats for bareboat rentals. This is the perfect place to begin your sailing trip due to it’s close proximity to other major islands that offer plenty of experiences to enjoy. Sets you up your sails for an unforgettable adventure on the new sailing boat or catamaran in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Boat types for charter

The region of the U.S. Virgin Islands offers relatively easy sailing conditions. Because of this, you may find here a variety of sailing boat rentals of different sizes and types that may fit best the level of your experience. Below are the links some boat types with prices available for bareboat rent:

  • Sailing yacht charters
  • Motor yacht charters
  • Catamaran charters

Travel information

Because most of the yacht charters in US Virgin Islands start from St. Thomas, we recommend flying directly to this island, booking a resort a day or two before your trip. This will give you some time to explore Magens Bay Beach, schedule an ecotour of the island’s rich natural landscape or simply relax and buy all necessary groceries for the upcoming sailing vacation.

As you travel by sailing boat or catamaran, the nearby St John is a great place to anchor and stop for incredible snorkeling, diving, and beach bumming for an afternoon. More experienced sailors can venture to St. Croix, which may take 4-6 hours of sailing depending on the weather conditions. This could also be good chance for novice sailors to master their skills if they have professional skipper on board.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport or visa to enter the islands, while non-U.S. citizens must follow all travel protocols for the U.S. mainland. If you are a non-U.S. citizen, be sure to check with your health insurance provider to ensure they cover overseas medical care. Medical facilities are available for most of the larger islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

No matter what kind of sailing itinerary you choose, new experience on board of your yacht in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be one for the books. This group of islands is favorite among sailing community because of its endless beauty and opportunities to explore. If you’re ready to set sails, check our website for the best charter in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Gateway to the Caribbean's Best Sailboat Destinations

The Virgin islands of the United States, as they are officially called, are a Caribbean territory of the USA that's a top sailing destination in itself, particularly around the two  northern islands of St Thomas and St John. Furthermore, the US Virgin Islands as they are more commonly known provide convenient access for US citizens, and people travelling to the Caribbean through US airports, to a wide range of other exotic tropical islands with highly-developed sailing charter services. In other words, one of the very best places to begin your Caribbean sailing holiday adventure.

There's much to see and do on a sailing charter around St Thomas and St John. A little distant to the south is the largest island in the group, St. Croix, less visited and a half-day sail away. The most popular course out of St Thomas's Compass Point marina will take you east to St John and the fabulous Virgin Islands National Park, then beyond to the British Virgin Islands. It's just 22 nautical miles sailing from St Thomas to the eastern end of Tortola. But you won't want to do it in one day. there's far too much to experience along the way!

There are numerous options for getting to the USVI and chartering a sail or power boat. Our Caribbean sailing experts are here to help you on your way.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Discovering the US Virgin Islands by Sailboat

Fly into Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and it's a short drive east across the island to Compass Point marina. Pass through Charlotte Amalie and stop awhile to see the capital and main port. Or save that for later as part of your sailing itinerary and use it as a base for exploring the western half of St Thomas. Use American Yacht Harbor at Red Hook at the eastern end for more discovery around the island's marine reserve waters and idyllic Great St James island. Then sail east to nearby St John and its National Park.

The Virgin Islands National Park covers more than half of St John's land area. The island is home to just over 4,000 people, compared to St Thomas's 52,000, so it's a place of peace and tranquility with plenty of anchorage space for everyone to spread out and enjoy it. Cruz Bay is the main port of entry and very busy with ferry traffic, while Coral Bay at the eastern end is a big harbor popular with cruisers. In between a number of bays both north and south at the heart of the national park have buoys for overnight stays.

Take time out to explore the national park, for an appreciation not only of the natural environment but also the history and cultural remnants of these islands, once the Danish West Indies. That explains many of the place names you will encounter.

If sailing south to St Croix, head for Christiansted and use that as a base for exploring the island, which is also packed with a quite fascinating history. It's more likely that your next ports of call will be in the stunning locations that are the British Virgin islands , where you can be with a couple of hours' sailing.

With the US Virgin Islands being popular for cross-border charters, it's important to know your documentation requirements before you travel. Non-US visitors require a visa or visa waiver to enter the US Virgin islands. British Virgin islands authorities require a valid passport for short holiday stays. Charters to the Spanish Virgin Islands are normally done out of Fajardo in Puerto Rico . Before travelling west from USVI, check requirements and any restrictions on charters in that direction.

There may also be restrictions on sailing to St. Croix, depending on experience.

US Virgin Islands Charter Cruising

Private charter yacht vacation in us virgin islands.

Located east of Puerto Rico, the Caribbean archipelago of the US Virgin Islands are home to the three stunning islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Renowned for stunning beaches, adventurous diving locations, lush national parks with captivating views; and with close proximity for easy island hopping, the US Virgin Islands provide charter guests with the ideal charter yacht vacation.

The US Virgin Islands offer a variety of itineraries, but beginning and ending in St. Thomas is usually the most convenient starting point for charter guests as it is home to an international airport and the busy ports of Crown Bay and Charlotte Amalie. In addition to airports and busy cruise ship ports, the beautiful beaches, upscale boutiques and restaurants all contribute to St. Thomas’ title as the busiest and most popular island of the three.

On the contrary, St. Croix is the least visited, yet the biggest island of the archipelago. Located 40 miles south of St. Thomas, St. Croix is an exclusive island known for lush tropical rainforests in Frederiksted, rum distilleries and sugar plantations. As the least visited island, St. Croix is home to some of the Caribbean’s most pristine beaches including Hibiscus Beach, located on the north shore; and Rainbow Beach, located on the west end.

40 miles north of St Croix and just 3 miles to the east of St. Thomas, St. John is largely protected as national parkland. Two-thirds of the island is designated as a national park, making St. John a host to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including the popular Trunk Bay. Trunk Bay is a stunning beach and park renowned for glistening white sand and an underwater nature trail for snorkeling. More remote areas include Mermaid’s Chair Beach located on the North Shore; Limetree Cove located on the east; and Europa Bay on the South shore. Up for an adventure? St. Johns offers a variety of adventurous diving and snorkeling sites including Eagle Shoals, Carvel Rock and Flanagan’s Cay.

A yacht charter in the US Virgin Islands is a fantastic way to explore the beauty of the Caribbean, and getting to the USVI is so easy, with direct connections from many major US Cities. Fly directly into St. Thomas and start your charter from Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

Nearby, St. John offers top-notch snorkeling at Trunk Bay, dubbed one of the world’s most picturesque beaches , and upscale vibes at Caneel Bay.

You can also jump across to the British Virgin Islands . It’s just a short sail to Tortola and Virgin Gorda, where the iconic Baths National Park awaits.

Several Yachts docked at Yacht Haven Marina USVI

Note that not all charter yachts have permits to cruise in the BVI , so make sure you check this with your broker beforehand.

As for the types of yachts, you have a range from sailing yachts and catamarans to motor yachts , with catamarans being particularly popular for their stability, spaciousness, and affordability.

We have also seen a growing demand for luxury experiences , which has brought bigger and more luxurious motor yachts to the USVI. These yachts offer high-end amenities like Jacuzzis , spas, gyms, and l arge selections of water toys like jet skis and even mini submersibles, essentially serving as floating luxury hotels.

Note: while the BVI has a ban on Jet Skis, the USVI does not!!

Why Charter in the US Virgin Islands?

Turtle in clear water in the USVI

World-Class Diving & Snorkeling

The US Virgin Islands are world famous for their clear, turquoise water, ideal for underwater exploration. There is a lot to see: vibrant coral reefs teeming with fish, turtles, rays, and reef sharks.

Chartering one of our many yachts featuring onboard scuba gear gives you easy access to some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean , including iconic locations like Trunk Bay , Buck Island , and the RMS Rhone wreck .

If diving isn’t your cup of tea, the shallow waters of the Virgin Islands are also perfect for snorkeling or even exploring the reef from the comfort of a paddleboard.

The Caribbean’s Biggest Yacht Selection

The US Virgin Islands offer a diverse selection of crewed yachts , including catamarans , motor yachts , and  superyachts . The only place that really compares is the Mediterranean, but on this side of the Atlantic, the US Virgin Islands are ahead.

The US  Virgin Islands is especially a popular destination for luxury travel, and in the last few years, we have seen a significant increase in larger motor yachts to satisfy the many who are seeking a more extravagant charter vacation.

(The USVI holds one major advantage over the BVI: Its water is much deeper , allowing for larger yachts. This is why almost all larger motor yachts are based in the USVI , even those that charter in the BVI.)

Itineraries inc. both USVI & BVI

Our yacht charters in the Virgin Islands often combine both the US and British Virgin Islands , offering a diverse itinerary and the chance to see more amazing destinations.

Starting and ending in Yacht Haven Grand on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, charterers can hop across the border with a quick immigration check-in and explore popular destinations in the BVI, such as Norman Island , Tortola , Peter’s Island , and Virgin Gorda .

It’s worth noting that many larger yachts, even if chartered in the BVI, commence from Charlotte Amalie Harbor in the USVI, as the harbors in the BVI are too shallow to host large yachts.

How to select the right yacht

When selecting a yacht, there are several factors that should be considered:

  • What is the right yacht speed for the itinerary you are planning?
  • Will your yacht be able to enter the British Virgin Islands territory?
  • What yacht is right for the Virgin Islands’ shallow waters?
  • What do you want in terms of onboard amenities and water toys?

Our Charter Brokers bring extensive firsthand experience, having served as crew members, captains, or chefs on yachts in the past. This knowledge equips them with the insight needed to assist you in making the perfect decision for your US Virgin Island yacht charter.

But let’s take a closer look at the different yacht types and their advantages:

Catamarans are the more affordable choice , offering more space compared to monohulls. Their shallow draft allows them to navigate in the shallow waters around the USVI and the BVI, significantly increasing their cruising grounds.

We are also seeing catamarans becoming bigger and more luxurious, and they are now starting to compare to some larger motor yachts in terms of space and amenities.

See all Catamarans →

Motor yachts are the choice for those who wish to see more in a shorter time . The higher speed of motor yachts gives you more flexibility, and you can simply fit more into your itinerary.

You can find motor yachts of all sizes, ranging from small motorboats suitable for bareboat charters to mega superyachts with luxurious amenities like jet skis , Jacuzzis , scuba gear , and onboard cinemas.

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are also available and are a great option for those who wish for a more traditional experience with sailing in focus—the weather conditions are definitely ideal for it!

But sailing yachts also do come with some limitations, as the water in the Virgin Islands, especially in the British Virgin Islands, is very shallow , and monohulls generally are deep drafted , limiting where they can go and how close to the beaches they can anchor.

APA vs All-Inclusive Yacht Charters

When planning to charter a catamaran in the US Virgin Islands, there are two main options to consider: APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) yacht charters and All-Inclusive yacht charters .

When choosing between an APA yacht charter and an all-inclusive yacht charter, clients should consider their desired level of customization , budget flexibility, and overall vacation experience. Both options offer unique advantages, and understanding the regional differences in the Mediterranean and Caribbean will help clients make an informed decision to ensure an unforgettable yachting vacation.

APA YACHT CHARTER

An APA yacht charter is popular for clients seeking a customized, high-end experience. In this charter arrangement, the client pays a base fee for the yacht rental and crew. On top of this base fee, an advance provisioning allowance (APA) is added, typically around 20-30% of the yacht’s base rental cost. This APA is intended to cover expenses such as food, beverages, fuel, marina fees, and any other costs that might arise during the charter.

ALL-INCLUSIVE YACHT CHARTER

In contrast, an all-inclusive yacht charter offers a hassle-free experience with a set price that covers all expenses related to the yacht, crew, food, beverages, and activities. Clients can relax and enjoy their vacation without worrying about additional costs or budgeting for unexpected expenses. Nevertheless, the issues are the same as in a luxury All-inclusive resort – you can’t have a hot tub full of Moet…

Where to Go on a US Virgin Islands Yacht Charter

Out of the many places we offer yacht charters, we are confident in claiming that the US Virgin Islands (USVI) offer some of the most sought-after destinations in the Caribbean . From the natural beauty of St. John , with its secluded beaches, lush hillsides, and captivating hiking trails, to the vibrant culture of St. Thomas , home to the bustling capital of Charlotte Amalie , there is something for every craving.

There remember, there is also the option to expand your cruising ground to include the British Virgin Islands next door, with famous destinations such as the Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda, Tortola Island, Jost Van Dyke, and many more.

Contact one of our expert brokers to learn more about what yachts have the paperwork to cruise between the two island groups.

STARTING AND ENDING IN ST. THOMAS

DAY 1 | Yacht Haven Grand – Trunk Bay, St. John

DISTANCE: 12nm DURATION: 1 hour

A jewel in the crown of the US Virgin Islands National Park, Trunk Bay is forever collecting accolades for being one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Backed by dark green forests that run down to meet the satin-colored sands and the endless hues of blue, Trunk Bay is perfect for dropping anchor with a rum in hand or ducking underwater to follow the coral trail.

There’s something about Trunk Bay that seems gloriously untouched. The coral trail runs on for 225 yards and teems with coral and colored fish.

For those who prefer to prop up on the sands, the beach is well served with sun chairs, food and drink stands, and everything you need to stay put in paradise all day.

Trunk Bay, St. John

DAY 2 | Trunk Bay – Tortola Island

DISTANCE: 11nm DURATION: 1 hour

Tortola is the largest island of the British Virgin Islands and is one of the best-known yacht spots in the Caribbean.

The busy harbor at Cane Garden Bay is the charter boat capital of the Caribbean, and with good reason—along with some interesting ruins and the fabulous National Park at the top of Mount Sage, Tortola offers spectacular powdery white, sandy beaches, wonderful snorkeling opportunities, and fantastic restaurants and bars that serve local brew.

A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery and a stroll around Craft’s Alive Village for souvenir shopping are musts.

Also don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove, a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.

DAY 3 | Tortola Island – The Baths, Virgin Gorda

DISTANCE: 10nm DURATION: 1 hour

The unrivaled star of the Virgin Gorda – The Baths is a fairytale destination for any yacht charter crowd.

As one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, you will love this landscape of pink granite slabs, hidden coves, cathedral-like caves, and shimmering saltwater pools, all perched on the edge of the sea.

The boulders have been adorned with ladders and ropes so you can climb and cross this natural obstacle course.

Wallow in the warm rock water pools, soak up the sun on your favourite boulder, and be enchanted by the natural grottos.

When you need a hint of refreshment, the nearby yacht club will tempt you in with long lavish lunches and afternoons being pampered at the spa.

DAY 4 | The Baths – Anegada Island

DISTANCE: 23nm DURATION: 2 hour

Anegada is a coral island and the northernmost island of the BVI group. It should not be missed thanks to its beautiful white sand beaches, quaint beach shacks, and the large horseshoe-shaped reef that protects its immaculate shores.

This unique island is the only inhabited island in the British Virgin Islands that is not volcanic. This low-lying island, with the highest point of only 28 ft (8.5m), is made up of coral and limestone and is surrounded by one of the world’s largest reefs.

The island is also known for its large salt ponds which used to be home to thousands of flamingos which were caught for food and their feathers during the 19th & 20th centuries. They have recently been re-introduced to the island and the population is flourishing. Anegada also boasts several species of turtles and the endangered rock iguana.

chartering a yacht in the us virgin islands

DAY 5 | Anegada Island – Dog Island

DISTANCE: 17nm DURATION: 1.5 hour

Named by sailors who would pass through these parts and assume that the noise of barking seals was actually dogs, Dog Island boasts five uninhabited islands sitting west of the Virgin Gorda.

George Dog offers a national trust mooring, and with exceptional visibility, a movie-set-like backdrop, and a local favorite lunch spot, it’s a must for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Beneath the blue, you can swim alongside rays, garden eels, the brightest shoals of fish, and wise old turtles.

The other dogs have no real beaches to speak of, but for those who want to visit a number of top-tier snorkelling spots, including Bronco Billy, which is rumored to be a favorite of Jacque Cousteau’s, the dogs are a dream

chartering a yacht in the us virgin islands

DAY 6 | Dog Island – Jost Van Dyke

DISTANCE: 18nm DURATION: 1.5 hour

Named after an early Dutch settler, Jost Van Dyke is a small picturesque island northwest of Tortola. At 4 miles long, the island is home to only a few hundred permanent residents and is known for its idyllic yacht anchorages.

Connect yourself with the local culture at White Bay – a magical place of positive energy in BVI yacht charters and a famous meeting place for sailors.

Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. Hang out in the hammock in Hendo’s Hideout, get a roti or seafood, and relax on the beach. Weekends are more party-like, with day trips from USVI filling the beach bars.

chartering a yacht in the us virgin islands

DAY 7 | Dog Island – Cruz Bay, St. John

DISTANCE: 7nm DURATION: 40 min

Cruz Bay is the perfect place to finish off a Virgin Island yacht charter for those who are craving a little civilization after the serene anchors at some of the Virgin Islands’ most remote cays. The main town on the island is where you will find a wealth of ritzy restaurants, boutique shops, buzzing bars, and high-class hotels.

As the largest commercial hub on St John’s and with over two-thirds of the island being a national park, this is where the action and cultural offerings are centered. Guests can catch local art and history at the Elaine Ione Sprauve Museum.

For those who want to follow their passion for outdoor pursuits, there’s snorkeling at the nearby Hawksnest Bay and 4X4 land adventures by jeep.

Our Favorite Destinations in the US Virgin Islands

White beach and turquoise water in Maho Bay, US Virgin Island, with a green forest in the back.

Located on the northern shores of St. John, Maho Bay offers a serene retreat for yacht charters seeking respite in the beautiful nature. With its turquoise water and white beach voted “Visitor’s Favorite Beach ,” Maho Bay provides an ideal setting for both relaxation and exploration. Charter guests can also enjoy activities such as snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs , kayaking, or paddleboarding along the coastline.

Our #1 recommendation for Maho Bay is a snorkeling trip to see the sea turtles and rays that feed in the sea grass just off the beach.

Along the eastern shoreline running out to the point separating Little Maho from Maho Bay Beach, you will find patches of reef with a wide variety of corals and abundant marine life. The water is shallow (between 3 to 10 feet deep) , giving snorkelers easy access to the coral, which includes species such as purple sea fans, sponges, anemones, and hard corals like Mustard coral, brain corals, and Elkhorn. You will also find a diverse fish life , with many varieties of wrasse, damsel, tangs, parrot fish, angelfish, and lionfish.

Along the western shoreline between Maho and Cinnamon Bay , you will also find excellent snorkeling opportunities, with coral and fish becoming more plentiful further from the beach. Snorkeling in shallow waters ranging from 3 to 12 feet deep, even novice snorkelers can enjoy a variety of marine life. While snorkeling, keep an eye out for Nurse sharks , which are slow-moving and not a threat but should not be disturbed.

Coral Habor

Located on the eastern shores of St. John in Coral Bay, Coral Harbor is a premier destination for yacht charters, offering a mix of natural beauty, cultural charm, and recreational opportunities.

Coral Bay Harbor is renowned for its vibrant local culture and community. Yacht charter guests can explore the charming waterfront village , where colorful shops , galleries, and restaurants showcase the island’s rich heritage and artistic spirit. From sampling local cuisine to browsing handcrafted goods , there’s plenty to enjoy in Coral Bay Harbor.

For those seeking adventure, Coral Bay Harbor offers a variety of recreational activities, such as guided snorkeling excursions to nearby reefs, as well as Kayaking and Paddleboarding.

Beyond the harbor, the surrounding landscape offers plenty of opportunity for exploration. Yacht charter guests can hike scenic trails that wind through lush tropical forests, leading to hidden waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints . Birdwatching, nature photography , and eco-tours are also popular ways to experience the natural beauty of Coral Bay Harbor and its surrounding areas.

Coral Bay - St John - USVI

Located on the northern coast of St. John, Caneel Bay is one of St. John’s top chartering destinations offering a whole 7 secluded beaches and over 170 acres of protected land.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Caneel Bay offers an array of recreational activities. Yacht charter guests can partake in snorkeling excursions to explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, while kayaking and paddleboarding allow for leisurely exploration of the bay’s tranquil waters.

Hiking trails wind through the resort’s lush grounds, offering opportunities to observe indigenous flora and fauna in their natural habitat.

For those seeking relaxation, Caneel Bay Beach Club offers Cabana rentals for a day of beachside lounging . Guests can also indulge in an extensive menu of exotic cocktails , perfect for unwinding under the Caribbean sun.

Francis Bay

Visit Francis Bay and you will find yourself on one of St. John’s longest beaches . This beautiful beach has calm waters and a lovely, sandy shore. On weekdays, this beach is not too crowded, and it is easy to find a private spot.

The Francis Bay Trail runs along the salt pond located just inland of the beach and is an excellent place for bird watching , especially early in the morning.

The best snorkeling in Francis Bay can be found on the eastern and western ends. They provide some ideal snorkeling opportunities . It’s not uncommon to see green sea turtles near the seagrass beds on this part of Francis Bay Beach.

You can also find other marine life common in the Virgin Islands like rays , colorful fish like honeycomb cowfish and butterflyfish, and plenty of coral. If you’re lucky you might catch sight of squid. You need to diligently look out for them as they’re not always easy to spot among the many different places in the Virgin Islands National Park.

Looking for a yacht charter in the USVI ? Dream sailing destinations don’t come much dreamier than the US Virgin Islands. A Caribbean hang out with an American vibe, sailing in the US Virgin Islands, or USVI, is even easier with a Sailo yacht charter.

The US Virgin Islands archipelago consists of three main islands, St John, St Croix and St Thomas.

Charlotte Amalie, the capital and cruise ship hub, is located on St Thomas. It’s also the liveliest of the three main islands, with plenty to see and do, and lots of nightlife. This makes it a great place to rent a catamaran yacht charter in the USVI for some fun filled sailing.

Neighbouring St John is the least developed of the main islands. So adventurers looking for nature trails and quieter beaches will find ample opportunity to unwind and enjoy the ‘real Caribbean’ vibe. You can also step aboard your USVI boat charter on St John, to explore this stunning island more,

St Croix, the southernmost and largest of the US Virgin Islands,  offers a diverse selection of beaches and bays to explore.

Popular with honeymooners, divers and culture seekers, St Croix is more laid back than St Thomas. But don't let that fool you… You’ll still be able to enjoy a fabulous day sailing in the USVI before enjoying a top quality meal and some nightlife at one of the many top quality resorts.

Choose your sailing adventure in the US Virgin Islands

Whatever your vacation style, the USVI’s have it. Culture and history buffs will love exploring  the faded colonial glory in Christiansted in St Croix; or the Pirates Treasure Museum in St Thomas.

And of course, you’re never far from an incredible beach or stunning underwater vista to explore. With a Virgin Islands yacht charter, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Head to Buck Island near St Croix for some of the best snorkelling in the Caribbean. Or set sail for Trunk Bay on St John for tranquil white sand beaches, coral reef and cocktails with a view.

The best thing about a vacation sailing a yacht charter in the USVI's? You can have it all…!

See the Destructive Impact of Hurricane Beryl in Photos

Fishermen watch their damaged fishing boats after the passage of Hurricane Beryl at the Bridgetown Fish Market, Bridgetown, Barbados, July 1, 2024.

H urricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 season in the Atlantic, has already broken storm records as it ravages through the Caribbean. Power lines have been brought down, homes flattened, and streets flooded across multiple southeastern Caribbean Islands. The death toll has risen to at least seven people, according to CNN.

Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Grenada are among the countries affected. In many of these places, the devastation is widespread: on Union Island, 90% of the houses have been “severely damaged or destroyed,” according to Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.

Read More: How to Help Hurricane Beryl Victims

The storm is not done yet, as it continues its path through the Caribbean . In preparation, a hurricane warning is currently in effect in Jamaica and officials have activated natural disaster response protocols. The Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness imposed a curfew for July 3, advising people to stay inside between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the storm is then set to arrive at the Yucatán Peninsula  in Mexico on Friday.

Late Monday, Beryl became the earliest storm in history to develop into a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic, peaking with winds of 165 m.p.h. Tuesday before weakening to a Category 4, now with 145 m.p.h. winds.

Here are photographs showcasing the destruction caused by Hurricane Beryl.

After Ravaging Eastern Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl Moves Toward Jamaica

The storm, now a Category 4 hurricane, left extreme damage in its wake as it headed toward Jamaica.

Reporting from Mexico City

Hurricane Beryl was barreling west toward Jamaica as a Category 4 storm on Tuesday, a day after it carved a trail of destruction across the southeast Caribbean and killed at least four people, officials said.

Beryl strengthened into a Category 5 storm late Monday, meaning it had maximum sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center of the United States. It was forecast to bring hurricane conditions to Jamaica on Wednesday.

Major Atlantic hurricanes have maximum sustained winds of 111 m.p.h. or higher on a five-tier scale that was developed in the 1970s. By Tuesday morning, Beryl had sustained winds near 165 m.p.h., the National Hurricane Center said.

No Atlantic storm has ever grown to Category 5 strength this early in the season, according to Philip Klotzbach , a Colorado State University meteorologist who specializes in tropical cyclones. By Tuesday afternoon, the storm had been downgraded slightly to a Category 4.

On Tuesday, the streets of Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, were filled with people hurrying to gather last-minute supplies. The bustling supermarkets were crammed with patrons, and many people waited in long lines at A.T.M.s.

“It’s better to have it and don’t want it, than want it and don’t have it,” said Saeed Pottinger, 37, who was getting extra medication, food and other supplies for his mother.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic on major city routes started as early as 9 a.m. “In every direction you turn, pretty much, it’s a gridlock,” said Leiska Powell, the emergency services manager with the Jamaica Red Cross.

The situation was expected to get worse as most businesses announced that they would close at noon. Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica also ordered the shutting of all government offices except for essential services.

Jamaica’s two main airports — Norman Manley International in Kingston, and Sangster International in Montego Bay — were to close Tuesday night, the airports’ operators announced.

The storm surge accompanying Beryl is expected to raise water levels by up to eight feet along Jamaica’s coast on Wednesday. Flash flooding is also a concern as the storm brings up to 12 inches of rain.

The country’s main electricity provider, Jamaica Public Service, has advised Jamaicans to be prepared for power outages. Mr. Holness urged citizens in low-lying areas, especially along the southern coast, where Beryl is expected to pass, to evacuate.

“I quite understand that people don’t want to leave their property; but the most important thing is your life,” he said at a news conference this week.

On Monday, Beryl roared across several Caribbean islands, and four deaths were later reported in Grenada, Carriacou and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The storm made landfall on Carriacou, a small island north of Grenada, on Monday morning and “flattened” it in just half an hour, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada said in a briefing broadcast on social media. Government officials also expected “extreme” damage on the neighboring island of Petite Martinique.

During a briefing Tuesday, an official said 95 percent of roofs and housing on Carriacou and Petite Martinique had been lost.

The complete scale of the destruction on Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which have a combined population of roughly 6,000 people, would not be clear until later on Tuesday, officials said. There was no power on either island, and communication was difficult.

One death was reported in Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, after a tree fell on a house. “This hits home,” Mr. Mitchell said. “The deceased person is in fact the relative of one of the persons who spent the last 36 hours with us here at the National Emergency Operating Center.”

Just north of Carriacou, several islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines also suffered “immense destruction,” Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said in a social media briefing. One death was reported, and hundreds of homes, schools and churches were severely damaged, he said.

An estimated 90 percent of houses on Union Island had been severely damaged or destroyed, and similar levels of destruction were expected on the islands of Mayreau and Canouan, Mr. Gonsalves said.

Beryl, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, left a trail of destruction in its path as it made landfall: trees snapped in half, an extensive storm surge and roofs blown off as winds reached more than 150 miles per hour .

The hurricane was an anomaly in what is already an unusually busy storm season, which extends until the end of November. When it developed into a Category 4 storm on Sunday, it was the third major hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean in June — and the first time a Category 4 materialized this early there in the season.

The storm was also historic for the short time it took to strengthen from a tropical depression to a major hurricane — 42 hours — a direct result of above-average sea surface temperatures. The quick escalation was a feat recorded only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history.

Officials in Barbados said on Monday that the island had been spared the worst of Beryl.

The prime minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, told a nationwide broadcast from the island’s emergency operations center that as many as 20 fishing boats, including two popular cruisers, had possibly sunk. Still, she added, “This could have been far worse for us.”

Reporting was contributed by Jovan Johnson from Kingston, Jamaica; Julius Gittens from Christ Church, Barbados; Linda Straker from Gouyave, Grenada; Kenton X. Chance from Kingstown, St. Vincent; Sharefil Gaillard from Gros Islet, St. Lucia; Maria Abi-Habib from Mexico City; and Yan Zhuang from Seoul.

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article said storm surge in St. Lucia caused significant damage to fishing vessels, sank at least 20 boats and damaged homes. This happened in Barbados, not St. Lucia.
