Event Details

What is left for Yacht Rock Revue to prove? This top-notch group of musicians has already rocked onstage with John Oates, Eddie Money (RIP), and both versions of the band Player. They’ve trademarked the term “yacht rock,” both metaphorically and literally (U.S. Registration Number 3834195). From humble beginnings in a basement, touring in partnership with Live Nation and Sirius XM, they now headline sold-out shows across the country, from Webster Hall in New York to the Wiltern in L.A. While rising from bars to amphitheaters, they’ve ticked every box on the Rock Star Accomplishments bingo card. Except for one: Writing and singing their own songs.

Yacht Rock Revue’s first original record is ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties. They’ve brazenly titled it Hot Dads In Tight Jeans – forgive them for bragging, but that’s what they are – and it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music.

“I had a midlife crisis. That’s why we made this album,” says Nick Niespodziani, the group’s singer, guitarist, and spiritual leader. “Everyone in the band is a dad now, so we needed to make this happen, before we become grandpas. I’ve sung ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes at least a thousand times, and if that isn’t paying your dues, I don’t know what is.”

It’s rare that musicians in their 40s chase their rock star dreams. You’d have to be crazy to try. YRR knew they were underdogs, but resolved to take one more shot at the Top 40, and maybe even become a Cinderella story of midlife fulfillment.

Yacht Rock Revue began in the least-yachtiest of states, 2,000 miles from breezy Marina del Rey. Niespodziani and Pete Olson met in the fourth grade in suburban Indiana, went on to Indiana University in the late Nineties, formed the band Y-O-U, then escaped – Rupert Holmes reference intended – to Atlanta. One night, Y-O-U tucked their tongues deep in their cheeks and played a show of Yacht Rock songs. The rowdy (a nice way of saying drunk), sold-out crowd loved it.

When the club owner asked them to do it again, Niespodziani didn’t want to. But the club owner had an ace up his sleeve: money. Over the years, YRR (there’s also a Dave, a Greg, and literally three guys named Mark) have turned themselves into human wine spritzers, playing 120 to 150 shows a year, mastering Yacht Rock’s slick chords and mellow grooves, and partying like it’s 1979.

What began as a joke among friends soon put a ripple in the zeitgeist, starting a national trend through YRR’s concerts, lauded as “unabashedly joyous affairs” by Entertainment Weekly. They accumulated an extensive wardrobe of white belts and polyester shirts. Yacht Rock Revue were revered and well-compensated! Their life was a tenor sax solo! This is what every musician wants. But even as YRR was sailing the smooth seas of tribute-band superstardom, and the band members all became dads, Niespodziani was still writing original songs.

These  new tunes had the spirit of Yacht Rock, but were more modern – akin to Phoenix or Air, the hip bands that adapted Yacht for a younger audience. They brought the songs to a hot producer, Ben Allen, who’s worked with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Neon Indian. Allen gave the songsa lustrous shine, for both new audiences and their ever-loyal fans, the Nation of Smooth. Niespodziani and Olson even co-wrote a song, “Big Bang,” with Yacht Rock master Matthew Wilder, famous for his massive 1983 hit “Break My Stride.”

“Step,” the record’s first single, is a peppy number replete with falsetto and bumping bass, a cross between the Bee Gees and Steely Dan’s “Peg.” It’s also the mission statement for the album in a way, because it’s about deciding who you want to be, and making space for that in your life. The seven-piece band display tight chops, and the songs incorporate Yacht Rock Revue’s sense of humor, especially on the funky, pro-margarita “Bad Tequila,” the flute-fired “Another Song About California,” and opening track “The Doobie Bounce,” where Niespodziani brags, “I used to sleep on couches/Now I sleep on nicer couches.”

Hot Dads In Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins’ beard. And YRR are already dropping these new songs into their sets, to great response from longtime fans who are thrilled to hear new smooth. While others in YRR’s position stick with the tried-and-true, Niespodziani hopes the album will let them welcome aboard new fans, too. To paraphrase a notable mariner… they’re gonna need a bigger yacht.

“Here’s how I see it,” Niespodziani concludes, sliding into a waiting limousine. “We have only one fewer hit than Player did, and Player is immortal. We built this Yacht Rock thing on the power of memories and good vibes. None of that is changing; we're just gonna make a few new memories as well."

JD Ryznar and Dave Lyons are the co-creators of the mid-2000s comedic web-series Yacht Rock.

While the joke genre they coined led to a legitimate smooth-music renaissance in pop culture, it has also led to a distorted definition of what yacht rock is all about.

The pair join host Elamin Abdelmahmoud to talk about setting the record straight with this week's launch of their podcast Yacht or Nyacht , where they'll adjudicate which songs belong to the yacht rock canon using a scientific scoring system.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Jack Black Says He's 'Ready' to Make a School of Rock Sequel over 20 Years After the Original

"I wish there'd be a 'School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo,' " Black joked of a potential follow-up to his 2003 film

Is Dewey Finn ready to return to the classroom?

In an interview with JOE , Jack Black was asked about a potential follow-up to his 2003 hit film School of Rock , to which he responded, "I'm ready."

"I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo ," he joked, nodding to the title of the 1984 sequel to Breakin' , famously titled Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo .

Black, 54, took the lead reins in  School of Rock , in which he plays Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher who enlists the students to form a rock band. The film later inspired a  Broadway  musical adaptation.

In an interview with PEOPLE last year, Black called the film "a love letter to all the rockers who haven't hit the big time but have that dream in their hearts, because there's so many out there and it's a testament to the dreamers."

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human-interest stories.

Black and his Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass touched on the idea of a School of Rock sequel back in January 2023, during an interview for the Octane channel on SiriusXM.

"Can we ever expect a sequel of some sort to  The Pick of Destiny  or  School of Rock ?" host Caity Babs asked the duo.

"Yup. Both of them. Breaking news. We're  thinking about doing both of those ," quipped Black, while Gass, 63, joked that a "hybrid" version would be called " School of D. "

In his interview with PEOPLE last year, Black clarified, "There is no truth to the hybrid sequel School of Destiny ," even though it was "a funny idea."

Steve Granitz/FilmMagic

But "never say never," the Kung Fu Panda 4 voice actor added.

"Look, if [screenwriter and costar] Mike White wants to make a School of Rock sequel, it's going to happen. But he's pretty busy now. He's got White Lotus . That is pretty compelling television. I love that show," Black said.

PEOPLE also recently spoke with Miranda Cosgrove , who played one of the students, Summer Hathaway, in the film, and asked her thoughts about a potential second film.

"It was still one of the favorite experiences. I'd love to get to be a part of [a sequel] in any way," said the actress, now 30.

Of herself and her former child castmates, Cosgrove added, "We all were so little when we started . We've all grown up, and it's just really ... I'm so lucky that I got to be a part of it."

White Rock Lake water activities suspended after 1.5M gallons of sewage spilled from Plano

More than 1.5 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into white rock creek, which feeds into white rock lake..

Dallas officials temporarily suspended water-related activities at White Rock Lake after 1.5 million gallons of raw sewage spilled into water from Plano.

To protect public health, Park and Recreation officials are advising park visitors not to fish in or enter the water due to elevated bacterial levels found in the creek and lake water.

Recreational boaters, rowing and yacht clubs will also discontinue their activities and water operations during the suspension, according to a notice from the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.

Environmental officials have been monitoring the lake after the spill, which started about 2:40 p.m. on March 14 when the valve at a water lift station in Plano failed, flooding the station and shuttering mechanical equipment. Sewage overflowed from three manholes near 5510 West Plano Parkway.

Plano officials estimated that about 500 gallons of sewage per minute flowed into White Rock Creek , which feeds into White Rock Lake. About 38 hours after the spill began, it ended just before 5 a.m. Saturday.

It is not clear how much sewage made its way from Plano to Dallas. To dilute the wastewater, Plano added dechlorination tablets and flushed the creek with water, said Victoria Cann, a spokesperson with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The TCEQ, which is responsible for overseeing such incidents, said Tuesday it is investigating the spill. It is not yet clear whether any fines will be levied.

The spill already had one group revise its plans prior to the notice from Dallas officials, with the Corinthian Sailing Club moving its annual sailboat regatta from White Rock Lake to Lake Ray Hubbard over the weekend after it was notified of the spill.

“I would not want to fall in that water,” the club’s commodore Ralph Jones told The Dallas Morning News on Monday .

Untreated sewage has flowed from Plano into White Rock Creek in previous incidents. More than 320,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the creek after a severe storm in November 2021 downed a tree, which fell on an aerial sewage line.

In June 2018, a burst wastewater pipe in Plano sent 1 million gallons of raw sewage into the creek, prompting Dallas to suspend recreational activities at White Rock Lake.

With the most recent spill, Dallas’ park department said it would work with the city’s water utilities department to monitor water conditions and any treatments.

The department said Wednesday it will post updates about when the water-related activities can resume at DallasParks.org and on department social media accounts.
