Yacht shipping versus yacht delivery under sail – which method really costs more and why?

Depending on the size of your yacht and the distance between ports, the difference in price between yacht delivery and yacht shipping may be smaller than you think.

A transocean passage can be a cruising delight, but it can also represent a logistical challenge. Owners who are constrained by time through work and family commitments, or who need to have their boat in a certain place at a set time, be it for a regatta or a charter, may not be able to sail their own yacht to its next destination.

Over the past ten years the business of moving yachts has seen significant developments. Several delivery companies now offer the services of qualified crew, 24-hour engineering support and satellite tracking as standard. In parallel, global yacht shipping has expanded vastly, resulting in faster deliveries and more destinations covered.

What is the difference in price between yacht delivery by sail and yacht shipping? We requested a quote to move a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44DS with a value of £250,000 from Antigua to Palma following the 2017 ARC. By ship: we were quoted £12,900 , including insurance and cradle rental. However, the shipment offered was later than the departure date we initially requested. By sail: quoted £8,500, not including fuel (estimated at £1,400), marina fees (est. £250), and return flights for three crew to UK (est. £1,800) giving a total of £11,950 .

Jeremy Wyatt, director of World Cruising Club, sees many yachts moved by both methods following events like the ARC.

“In general there are two types of cruisers, the ‘traditional’ liveaboards who will cruise the Caribbean then sail home to Europe or the US. More recently, though, we have seen more time-poor sailors, usually because they have not retired or are not able to spend extended periods sailing,” he comments.

“These are the owners who would be expected to ship back home. The convenience to them is not needing to spend six weeks preparing and sailing a boat back via the Azores and [that convenience] outweighs the cost of shipping.

“There is also the argument that shipping saves wear and tear, which is a hidden cost of sailing it back. Some boats, particularly catamarans, are also not really suited to the North Atlantic route back to Europe.”

ARC Europe: Crossing the Atlantic west to east is a very different experience

Engaging a delivery company involves putting a valuable asset in the hands of a skipper and crew you have probably never met. So how do you decide if they are up to the job?

Simon Weeks is a freelance delivery skipper, based in Hamble, UK, who sails worldwide. “As a minimum, I would always ask for a skipper’s CV, verifiable references, and some contact well in advance of the trip,” he recommends.

Pete Green, owner of Halcyon Yacht Delivery, has developed clear criteria for both skippers and crew. “We run with a minimum of three crew on short and medium trips and four crew on transocean deliveries,” he comments.

“Our minimum skipper qualification is RYA Yachtmaster Ocean with lots of previous experience. In terms of crew, on medium to long trips we insist that one of the two crew must be a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and, on shorter trips, a Yachtmaster Coastal. The third crew member must have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience.

“Anyone going on a Halcyon delivery has to supply two referees who are followed up, plus either a face to face or telephone interview during which a short theory exam is undertaken to assess the extent of the crew’s knowledge.”

It is perhaps not surprising that, in a market where margins have been squeezed in recent years, not all yacht deliveries go to plan. “There are certainly some cowboys out there,” comments Weeks. “We pick up numerous deliveries every year from owners that have been let down.”

“There was one yacht we delivered from Spain to the UK that had been left by another skipper who decided he didn’t want to finish the trip. We were given a list of defects that the previous skipper had identified.”

“We were prepared for some maintenance before setting off but were surprised to discover that the yacht was absolutely fine. It turned out the list had been created so that the skipper could justify going home early.”

How yacht delivery companies operate has also been publicly called into question on several occasions. Many operations rely on unpaid volunteer crew keen to build their experience, a practice that not everyone in the industry supports.

There have also been reports of skippers pressured to sail into unsuitable conditions. In 2012, Farnborough-based Reliance Yacht Management was successfully sued for negligence after the deaths of a delivery skipper and two crew.

The wear and tear inflicted on a yacht on a delivery passage is a major consideration. With brand new yachts, the job becomes particularly involved, explains Green.

“It’s always a challenge to deliver a brand new yacht thousands of miles in perfect condition. We spend time bubble-wrapping every inch of the interior to protect it. Also, we don’t use certain items, including the oven, and we put foil on the top of the hob to make sure it is protected.”

“On the exterior, we check all fixtures and fittings before setting off to make sure blocks are secure, winches have been tightened to the deck sufficiently, and sails have been bent on correctly. Lifejackets and harnesses stay on deck to avoid scratching the interior.”

At the other end of the scale, some yachts being delivered haven’t been sailed in years. “It can be a tricky issue,” comments Green.

“Nearly all delivery companies and skippers specify minimum levels of equipment as part of the contract, but boat condition can be more problematic. Contact will be made with the owner beforehand to establish the yacht’s age and whether there has been a recent survey, but this only gives half the picture. My checklist includes all the seacocks, the rig, engine and much more.”

Shipping routes

Shipping yachts has become an increasingly popular option for many owners in recent years. It’s an appealing prospect, largely due to the inherent predictability of an operation that relies on big ships that can handle all but the worst weather with ease.

Shipping companies increasingly charter purpose-built vessels that speed up the operation further.

“It’s possible to ship with the mast left up, the shore power connected and crane the boat straight into the water at the other end,” explains Josh Flavell, a former delivery skipper who now works for Peters & May.

The list of destinations covered has also grown. “Whilst routes used to be dictated by the traditional yachting seasons and its major events, such as the ARC, today we are delivering to some of the world’s remote cruising grounds as well. Alaska and Tahiti are two of the more far-flung places we sailed last year,” reports Sander Shuurman from Sevenstar Yacht Transport.

The Oyster Yachts team in Palma manages many yacht handovers to and from shipping companies on behalf of owners. “It’s a very popular option,” explains Mark Durham, Oyster Palma’s operations manager.

“Although the shipping fees appear higher than the professional delivery companies, higher wear and tear heading east across the Atlantic means many are choosing what is a much more predictable option.

“There are some downsides. One is [to do with] the vagaries of loading dates. It can lead to multiple rescheduling, both of the loading and offloading team’s plans, and of course the planned program after arrival.

“Although the passage time will almost always be shorter than the own-hull sailing time, the additional costs incurred at each end due to delays can add substantially to the basic charges, so they should always be budgeted for as well.”

Whilst yachts won’t incur sail or motor maintenance issues, Hamish Burgess-Simpson, project manager from Oyster, warns that shipped yachts can arrive “truly filthy”, depending on their loaded position on deck.

“The dirt washes off the topsides with a bit of effort, but it can be permanently ingrained in the canvas work,” he adds. This dirt, generated largely by the ship’s stacks, can be mostly avoided by ensuring your yacht is placed forward of the exhaust system, but it’s still advisable to stow all canvas.

The price of moving a boat, whether by ship or delivery crew, can be hard to estimate. “In recent years the bottom line for owners has become increasingly price driven, so we try to provide quotes that include all of the major expenses, including cradle hire and insurance whilst the boat is in our hands,” says Josh Flavell from Peters & May.

“Our costs vary quite significantly. If we are utilising a scheduled ‘liner’ service, then the cost can be higher as the ship sails whether it is full or not.

“However, where we are using a chartered service ship, [which accounts for] about 70 per cent of our shipping, we can often offer a much lower price.”

Despite an ever-increasing choice of routes, some destinations will always require a delivery crew, or a combination of shipping and delivery. “We recently delivered a yacht to her owner’s private island in the Western Isles,” says Pete Green of Halcyon Yacht Delivery.

Hidden costs of yacht delivery and yacht shipping

Both shipping and sailing a yacht can potentially incur hidden costs:

  • Cradle hire: yachts being shipped are secured to the deck in cradles. Whilst you may own one, it may not be suitable for shipping. If it is, there will also be an additional cost of shipping the cradle itself or storing it ashore.
  • Insurance: many shipping companies include insurance from when the yacht goes into the ship’s crane to when it comes out, but not all – check with your insurer in advance.
  • Berthing: ships are delayed sometimes, particularly due to loading and unloading.
  • Satellite communications: one owner we spoke to reported a satellite phone bill in excess of £15,000 following a transatlantic delivery. The data connection had been left open by accident by the delivery skipper. If allowing use of your own satellite communication equipment, agree terms in advance in writing.
  • Wear and tear: on long passages, particularly heading into prevailing weather systems, some wear and tear on equipment should be expected. Consider timing of cosmetic work to the yacht carefully and ensure running gear works freely before handing over to a delivery company.
  • Insurance: again, check your policy. Your insurer may specify requirements for the delivery which may go beyond the skipper’s qualifications. Crew may also need to meet certain requirements.

Yacht Deliveries: What to Know

Getting your yacht from one port to another isn’t always as easy as it sounds. A short coastal hop is no problem when your full-time crew is around, but even moving your boat a short distance to a haul-out or refit without skilled help can be an ordeal.

Yacht deliveries run the gamut of a few miles down the coast for service or storage, to offshore international deliveries crossing thousands of miles in a journey of several weeks. No matter what your yacht moving needs, a few elements of the delivery are always the same.

What is a Yacht Delivery?

The simplest definition of a yacht delivery is moving a boat from port to port without the owner on board. With a permanent crew, that happens all the time, and owners will fly to the new location to enjoy the change of scenario without giving it much thought.

But what we’re talking about is a little different – moving a boat without the regular captain and crew, or some combination of the regular staff who run the boat. For smaller yachts without permanent crews, a delivery is often done when an owner doesn’t feel they have the time, experience, or help needed to move the boat on their own.

The key point is that the boat is transported without the direct involvement of the ownership or even the owner’s permanent representatives being in charge of the vessel.

Why is a yacht delivery needed?

There are many reasons a yacht may need delivery. Ocean passages and long offshore trips can be arduous and unpleasant, and the owner of a large yacht may not have the interest, inclination, or time for those trips. Most large yachts are bought for pleasure, and taking a yacht on a long voyage is far from a relaxing experience for some owners and passengers.

Reasons for doing a delivery include:

  • Seasonal changes of location or storage. Many yachts winter in the tropics but return to North America, Europe, or other cooler climes in the summer months. This annual relocation may not involve the regular crew, especially if they are local, seasonal employees.
  • New yachts. Getting a new yacht from the builder to the owner’s home waters can be a major task. Unless the owner has already arranged a permanent crew, it will need to be sailed on its own bottom if it is too big to ship, or shipping is prohibitive.
  • Permanent or seasonal changes cruising grounds. Taking a yacht from cruising the Caribbean to the South Pacific or a similar shift in cruising venue may need a delivery team.
  • Refitting. Most shipyards aren’t in glamourous places that yacht owners like to go for vacations, so getting a boat there is often a delivery task.
  • Moving the yacht when there is no captain. Captains resign and move on, an owner takes some time to find a new captain for a new boat, or a replacement for a departure. In the meantime, the yacht needs to move.
  • Moving a yacht owned by an inexperienced owner. This is a very common application for smaller yachts with owner/operators. Insurers are fine with inexperienced owners in protected waterways, but moving a boat from the Chesapeake to the Caribbean? A captain and crew with offshore experience may be the only way.

Yacht Delivery or Shipment?

Everything from smaller yachts to some super yachts can be shipped. But are they better traveling on their own bottoms? The answer depends on the destinations, distances, and timing of the delivery. And the owner’s budget.

Yacht Shipping

Yacht shipping services run from major ports around the world on an annual schedule. The good news is that you can put your yacht on a ship in Auckland, NZ and pick it up in Miami, FL. Or from many locations around the world throughout the year. They will cradle up your yacht and secure it for sea, and get it to her new port on schedule.

But shipping schedules are fixed in advance, and space is limited. Larger yachts require considerable bespoke cradling and preparation, so the costs can be quite high.

The other downside to shipment is that it is still from shipping port to shipping port. If you want your yacht in Maine or Majorca but you can only get it shipped to Ft. Lauderdale, FL or Genoa, Italy, you’re still going to have a delivery on the end. It’s a shorter one, and skips the big ocean passage. But someone is going to have to take delivery of the yacht when it’s unloaded and get it where it’s needed.

There are advantages. Fuel capacity doesn’t limit your delivery range, for example. It can be faster, much faster with sailing yachts. And there’s less risk to the yacht when it’s on a bigger ship.

Shipping vs. Delivering

Yacht deliveries have the enormous advantage of being from where the yacht is currently to exactly where you want it to go, when you want it to go, and subject only to the limitations of weather and safety. The yacht won’t have to be stripped and packed on a ship, and delivery is often less expensive.

But it’s not without costs. You must hire and feed crew, fuel the vessel, and insurance for the delivery may be extra. Sea time also puts wear and tear on the yacht, and equipment and systems may break and need repair. It may also take more time to get your boat delivered on her own bottom, since commercial shipping is comparatively fast in most cases, especially compared to sailing yachts.

A yacht delivery service gives you control

The chief advantage of a delivery is the control over destinations. You’re not tied to a larger ship’s itinerary, and you can get the boat where you need it, when you need it.

A professional yacht delivery service will tailor the delivery to your needs for schedule and destination, which is something you can not do on a larger ship. They will know captains and crew, and bring much logistical expertise to the planning, preparation, and execution of your delivery.

How do yachts get delivered?

No matter the crew or service you use, the delivery process is similar. The goal is a safe, timely delivery of the boat without excessive costs or risk to the yacht or the crew.

First, you determine your itinerary and schedule – where you want the boat and by what date. When you do this, it’s important to consider the practical realities of ocean sailing, how your boat sails, and that you may know a lot less about getting your boat between ports than your delivery captain. So your initial ideas will need adjustment once the planning begins.

The next step is to find your delivery captain or service, and plan with them how best to do the delivery. The captain should know if they need help, what the best time of the year is, and what routes are best or your yacht’s capabilities.

Your yacht will need to be prepared for an offshore passage, and many delivery teams do with this. They will also inspect the yacht and make recommendations for safety and reliability. Some crews will manage getting the recommendations done, and there will be a last check before departure.

The captain and crew will do the delivery on the best weather window during the planned departure time, and bring the boat in safely and tidied up at the destination.

As part of the delivery, you will need to get your captain and crew to your boat, and fly them home once the delivery is done, cover their expenses, and pay for all your boat’s expenses along the way.

Freelance captain and crew

There are many freelance captains and crew out there who may offer to deliver your boat. And there are many competent captains doing this. But not everyone is as they present themselves.

It’s important that you properly vet any independent captain and crew you hire. You are entrusting a very expensive asset to a comparative stranger, and you won’t likely be on board to see that your yacht is being cared for to your standards.

Before you hire a captain, do:

  • Review their resume and experience. They should have experience with vessels similar to yours, and making similar deliveries. You don’t want a coastal delivery skipper making his first blue water delivery on your yacht.
  • Check credentials. Not all licenses and credentials are created equal, and you should be sure that any licenses or credentials are current and proper.
  • Check references. Don’t skip this sometimes uncomfortable step, because it’s your best source of information that the captain you’re considering can really do the job.

Some captains will want to bring their own crew along, and this can be an excellent idea since a competent captain will also know a good crew. Make sure you do the same checking into any crew the captain recommends.

A yacht delivery service is a business that focuses full-time on delivering yachts. They will have a roster of experienced captains and crew and will organize the delivery for you. While they are also often dealing with freelance independent captains and crew, the difference is they properly vet anyone for you, and they work with captains they know.

A full service delivery specialist will know all the details to attend to that you, as an owner, may not. This is an enormous advantage to you, as it takes much of the organizational headache away.

What is the crew usually needed to perform a yacht delivery?

The crew needed will vary with the size of the vessel, of course. But it also is affected by the length of the journey in miles, how much time it will take, and how it will be sailed. For example, a coast-wise journey with stops in port every night takes longer, but requires fewer crew members because you won’t need a twenty-four hour watch for most of the trip.

The Captain – the key to success

The delivery captain manages the delivery from start to finish, setting the course and departure window, watch schedules and rotations, and making decisions in the face of bad weather and other problems.

If the delivery is across an ocean, a captain with offshore experience is a must. Coastal deliveries don’t have quite the same issues, but you still need experience and skill.

For smaller yachts, look for a USCG Master’s License or RYA Yachtmaster Ocean rating, and experience with a boat at least as large as yours. Larger yachts and super yachts should find a qualified captain with appropriate licensing for the size of your vessel.

You will relinquish complete control of your yacht to the captain, so you need to be assured he or she is up to the task.

Skilled mates can stand watch on their own and have the experience to know when it’s time to bring the captain in on decisions. For longer or nonstop passages, you may need or the captain may insist upon one or more additional crew members. More experienced, senior delivery crew may cost you more.

If a yacht requires an engineer during regular operations, you should have one on board for deliveries. Smaller yachts will not need one, but it can be very important for the more complex engines on larger vessels, unless the delivery crew already has significant engineering experience.

The deck team

Deck crew will help stand watch on larger vessels, and clean the yacht up when it arrives. For larger vessels and longer passages, deck crew can be an extra help to get the yacht there safely.

The galley team

If you need a big delivery team, a galley specialist makes the delivery more comfortable and safer. Hot, timely meals keep a crew performing at peak safety and efficiency.

How much does it cost to deliver a yacht?

The delivery costs for a yacht vary with the size of the vessel, the length of the delivery, and the type of delivery. Delivering a yacht from Maine to Florida down the U.S. East coast is similar in length to taking a boat from Hampton, Virginia, to the Caribbean. But one is a series of mostly day trips with overnight stops, and the other is a single, long offshore passage. The costs will be very different.

You hire most crew on a day rate , and that coupled with delivery time is the largest determinant of delivery cost. Typical day rates for captain and crew vary with skill and the type of trip. In the example above, the daily rate charged for a coastal captain running 10-12 hours per day and pulling into a marina may be lower than the charge for a nonstop, twenty-four-hour day trip by a skilled blue water captain.

A captain can cost from $250 to $600 per day, while mates, engineers, galley, and crew can run from $200-$400 depending on skill and experience.

Besides sea time, all captain and crew are paid the day rate for travel time, preparation time, days spent working on the boat, waiting for weather windows, or otherwise involved with the delivery. Depending on the readiness of the yacht, the captain and a few crew may have many days of work preparing the boat for delivery.

Besides crew pay, the owner will cover:

  • Flights to the boat and back home for the captain and crew
  • A per diem for food and lodging, unless food and lodging is provided on board the vessel.

Other delivery related expenses the owner will cover include:

  • Dockage before and after the delivery, and any marinas stopped in along the way. This is common for coastal deliveries.
  • Transit, clearance, and port charges.
  • Any supplies, parts, repairs, or equipment needed to make the yacht ready for delivery.

Every delivery is unique, and the final price can be affected by everything from weather to mechanical breakdowns. All those details should be in the Delivery Contract, with specifics like the rights of the captain to halt or pause the trip for safety, and how costs are handled.

Yacht delivery companies will give you an estimate or quote based on your tailored circumstances, but a fixed price arrangement is unusual, but not impossible.

Yes, they can. In fact, with many smaller yachts, the owner may accompany the paid captain to get the sea time and learn more about their boat and offshore sailing. Larger yachts can take pleasure passengers, but they should be aware of the requirements and limitations during a delivery. Galley crew and stewards should also be on board.

Absolutely, those are some of the most common deliveries. Many owners don’t have the time or the skill to move their yachts such long distances, so they will have them delivered. Long distance deliveries are significantly more complex and expensive than local trips. Depending on the yacht’s capabilities, only certain types of trips and routes may be possible, or only certain times of year. They may also need special equipment and additional crew to stand watches. For example, crossing the 3,000 mile stretch of ocean from the Galapagos to French Polynesia may be a problem for power vessels with limited range, so you may need supplemental fuel tanks. Or sailing yachts may have to sail different, longer routes to avoid adverse wind directions at the wrong time of year, like sailing upwind from New Zealand to Tahiti in the trades.

To be a delivery captain takes years of experience handling a variety of boats over many miles of water. Amateur sailors can transition to professional delivery crew or even a captain over time, but it will take some work. Being a delivery captain is a genuine job, with real required skills and certifications. At a minimum, you would need several offshore passages, and sufficient sea time to qualify for and pass the USCG Masters License or a RYA Yachtmaster Ocean certification. These credentials require verified sea time and experience. There are ways for enthusiastic but inexperienced sailors to get the required experience, as volunteer crew on yacht deliveries, and crew for cruising yachts on ocean passages. Some delivery skippers may take unpaid crew who are looking for sea time, though you’d probably be on your own getting to the boat and back. You would get an excellent experience. Many full-time cruising couples also pick up volunteer crew for large passages, and that’s another way to get your sea time.

Starting your professional journey

Deliveries are a good way to build up offshore experience, fast. If you’ve got training and experience, you can start crewing and learning to build your skills. And those skills will serve you well, building a full-time career in the yachting industry as a permanent crew or full-time delivery captain.

Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.

It’s not necessarily difficult to transport a sailboat, but it does require care and careful planning. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to streamline the process and make it easier.

Is Sailboat Transport Expensive?

Sailboat transport can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Obviously, moving a small sailboat is relatively cheap in comparison, especially if you already have a truck and a trailer.

The cost of transporting a larger boat is higher, as you’ll probably need to hire a shipping company or a crew.

There are multiple ways to transport a large sailboat, and the more economical method isn’t always immediately evident. Some boats may be cheaper to ship on a specially-designed yacht carrying vessel, while others may be cheaper if you hire a delivery crew.

Pricing varies between boats, locations, and destinations, so it’s essential to research all available methods and request multiple quotes. If you do, you could save thousands on transport and delivery, not to mention insurance costs to protect your vessel from possible damage.

Sailboat Transport Methods

There are several ways to transport a sailboat, and the ideal method depends upon the size and dry weight of the vessel. Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.

Self Towing

Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.

Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.

Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.

You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.

Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.

The Basics of Towing Rules in the United States

The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.

Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.

With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.

Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.

Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet. 

Professional Towing Services

It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.

Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.

In most cases, the tow company will not be able to help you launch your boat. You’re responsible for arranging boat crane services at your destination. It’s best to plan carefully, as you may end up paying more if you make the driver wait too long.

Cost of Professional Sailboat Towing Services

Cost varies widely based on the company, location, and size of the load. Most towing companies have a base fee, a fee of the assessed load, and then a per-mile charge. Some companies have different fee structures.

Companies that offer quotes usually predict a charge of between $500 and $1,000 for typical trips, though it can cost as little as $300 if you have a relatively small boat and it only needs to travel a short distance.

Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Large and small sailboats are frequently sent across oceans via cargo ships. This method is time-tested and relatively cost-effective, though it’s not as straightforward as just sailing the boat across.

Some people hire an agent to arrange shipping, which is the easiest and most reliable way to have a headache-free experience.

Shipping a sailboat by sea is slower than over-the-road transport, and schedules are less flexible. Often, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up on a specifically-designed yacht carrying ship.

Once the ships are loaded, they set out at predetermined times that might be months ahead of when you booked. The best way to ensure you get a spot on a yacht shipping vessel is to plan well in advance of when you actually need to transport the vessel.

Logistics are the greatest challenge of shipping a boat on a larger ship. If you don’t work with an agent or an accommodating shipping company, you could have to work out the following and more:

  • Transportation to the shipping yard
  • Loading and securing instructions
  • Shipping destination
  • Payments to various services
  • Customs in the destination country (if outside of the U.S.)
  • Taxes and import fees
  • Declarations
  • Inspections
  • Unloading at the destination
  • Transportation from the destination port to the marina

As you can see, there are lots of reasons to hire a professional to manage the minutiae of shipping a sailboat. The last thing you want is to have your boat seized at customs or have it dropped off in an unguarded yard in the wrong location.

Cost to Ship a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Shipping costs for ocean-going boat transport are lower than many people expect. A lot of factors are involved, including the size of the boat, its height (from keel to mast top), its displacement, and the distance it needs to be shipped.

The lowest prices you’ll find to ship an average-sized boat are around $3,000 to $5,000. A more typical estimate for an average sailboat is between $6,000 and $10,000. Some vessels and destinations cost upwards of $15,000. Costs tend to increase with the size and distance, and the value of your sailboat also plays a part.

Prices in the yacht shipping industry are competitive, which is why it’s relatively affordable to ship a boat over an ocean. It’s surprisingly popular as well, and there are more than a dozen shipping companies offering long-distance ocean transport specifically for yachts of various sizes.

Hired Delivery

Hired crews for boat delivery is the other way to transport a sailboat over the water. Crew services find a captain and a small professional crew to sail your boat for you.

This is a great option for large boats, as it’s often less expensive and time-consuming than shipping it on a larger vessel.

Hired crew delivery services are offered by companies and experienced individuals. You can even find a trusted friend to crew your boat for you, and they can hire a crew member or two to accompany them for the journey.

While under hire, the crew will be living in your boat. Crew members come from all backgrounds, and many sailors spend a summer or two working for a charter service to make some money or get free transportation to other countries.

Cost to Hire a Delivery Crew

Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.

As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.

These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.

Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. These costs are impossible to predict without knowing your specific plans, so it’s best to reach out to Captain James Lowe for a specialized quote.

Hired crew delivery services usually have a minimum crew requirement for different boat sizes and types. In this case, sailboats require a minimum of one deckhand in addition to a captain. Larger sailing vessels of 65 feet or greater require two or more additional deckhands.

Delivery Rates

How we estimate our fees.

Delivery fees are usually calculated in one of three ways: By the mile, by the day and as a fixed cost. The first and last options often "encourage" the delivery crew to push the boat so that their effective day rates are higher or so they can get on to the next delivery and make more money. At PYD we only charge by the day. This encourages our skippers and crew to take a conservative approach to weather and sea conditions and discourages unnecessary risks. All of our captains are very professional and do not linger in any port without good reason. A log is kept and all delays are well documented.

We generally charge anywhere from about $300 to $500 per day, depending on the specific captains license, the size of the boat and whether it is a power or sail boat. We will match the appropriate license with the size and type of vessel. For example, we will not provide a captain with a 1600T license at $500/day to deliver a 36 foot sailboat.

If we are making a delivery that takes more than a day, then we will add crew as necessary. Deliveries lasting more than four or five days usually require two extra crew so every member of the delivery crew can get enough sleep while always maintaining an adequate watch. Same day deliveries can often be handled by one person.

All crew travel to and from the vessel are the responsibility of the owner. If the crew lives within 50 miles of the vessel, then travel expenses are waived. We charge $45 per day per crew member for provisions and we estimate the costs of fuel, port fees (customs, immigration, slip/mooring fees) and other necessary fees which must be paid in advance.

By way of example, here's how we might price a delivery of a 36 foot sailboat from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Marina Del Rey, California - a trip of about 1100 nm.

At a cruising speed of 6 knots, traveling day and night, this trip would take about eight days of straight line sailing time. Add in a day for refueling and re-provisioning for stops in Cabo San Lucas and Turtle Bay, checking out in Ensenada and checking in in San Diego, this trip could easily take 12 days without any unplanned delays and good weather. However, sailing north along the west coast of Baja California is against the prevailing winds and waves, so straight line sailing is not always possible and can add a few more days to the trip.

So, with a $300/day captain and two crew at $100/day, just the delivery fees could be 6-7 thousand dollars. Provisioning would cost about $900-$1100. Port fees typically cost around $300 depending on the day and time of arrival. In the worse case scenario of having to motor the entire way (assuming about 1 gph fuel consumption rate and diesel fuel at $4.00/gal) fuel costs would be about $730.

Flights for three crew from LAX to PV might be around $600.

So, all in, this example might cost the owner around $9500 dollars (less any fuel savings from actual sailing).

Never take any risk by giving out the job to anyone who does not have the necessary experience and qualification.

As a boat owner, you will find it very difficult to find the right person for the job going through the net. Too many unqualified and unprofessional people on the web, unfortunately.

References are always a good mean of understanding if the skipper/crew are qualified and reliable, but even that will not be 100% safe.

Try not to make your selection based only on employing a skipper going for a cheap rate. This may eventually result in losing your money, and probably even worse  your boat .

Therefore, you are better off dealing with a good and recognised yacht delivery  company that will take full responsibility. Our yacht delivery team will join the vessel on a specific date agreed between Delivery Captain and the owner agent. The following few days will be dedicated to boat preparation, boat check and test, sea trial, route strategy, weather check, provisioning, fuelling, paperwork check, initial delivery plan. We estimate departure within three days, weather permitting.

During delivery, we will provide a satellite tracking position via mail, so that you can be kept up to date with boat position at all times. 

Yacht Delivery  rates  and yacht delivery  costs  are not the same thing, and they differ from each other by definition. The rates are the fixed basic fee that yacht delivery company will charge. The costs instead are many variables, depending on how much is spent along the way. When we consider costs we should look at diesel cost and quantity, onboard food, crew travel cost and so forth. It’ very difficult to provide a list of costs, however, we made a shortlist to take under account different factors:

  • How old is the boat
  • Fuel consumption
  • The distance to travel
  • The departure point
  • The destination
  • The time of the year for any route chosen
  • Off Season deliveries
  • Marinas and stops
  • Forced stops due to bad weather or repairs
  • Canal Passages

This is only a small list and very generic, a much more accurate list can be generated for each boat and any route. Yacht delivery rates and costs will always be kept to its lowest possible level. We deliver  sailing yachts , sailing catamarans and motor yachts.

Our standard rates range is between £1.99 – £2.50 GBP Sterling Pounds per NM (nautical mile).

The yachting space of the exhibition expanded every year and today it is not just dedicated stands and the opportunity to offer our products and services, but also a full-fledged four-day forum for the exchange of experience, communication and new useful acquaintances in the world of yachting. This is a great opportunity to talk about yachting to those who would like to learn yachting, but do not know where to start.

The cultural program of Moscow Dive Show 2020 will include a large yacht block with speeches by reputable sailors on a variety of topics – from the first steps in yachting to life hacks and recommendations from experienced yachtsmen. So it won’t be boring!

This year Yacht Russia magazine will present its stand at the exhibition, where you can find out about our plans, projects and, of course, purchase magazines. And of course, we will prepare pleasant surprises for the guests of the exhibition.

In addition, visitors to the exhibition are waiting for:

– decisive discounts on virtually everything – on equipment, travel packages and training courses. You can bargain, compare, choose the best and get first-hand advice.

– A whole pavilion of delicacies – from mussels and crab to shrimp and oysters, from homemade cheeses to smoked lard. Fruit drinks, craft beer and mulled wine so appropriate in February. In the pavilion, you can sit at the table and have a full lunch.

– Children's program. For young visitors a separate day is provided in which they can take part in master classes and competitions. Entrance to the exhibition for children under 12 years old is free.

– Hour of presents! The time when each visitor can get a really valuable prize, just for coming to the Moscow Dive Show 2020. For sailors, a separate prize category is provided so that the gift is really needed.

Tickets are already on sale. The cost of admission until February 5 is 400 rubles. On the opening day of the exhibition, tickets will cost 500 rubles. Buy in advance. You can purchase a ticket through the official website of the exhibition at http://www.diveshow.ru/show/bilety/.

Having over 25 years experience in the field of mass-produced, carbon-based composite materials, Russian LLC "NPO “KRIT” is a manufacturer of the highest quality.

Our articles made of graphite and carbon composite are used as dressing for heating system manifolds and heat insulation (shielding). These are used for electrothermal furnaces with different industrial applications, such as powder metallurgy, chemical industry, aviation, and the jewelry industry.  Graphite and carbon composite are also irreplaceable in hot working and homogenization. The most important application may be the growth of large cylindrical ingots, or boules, of single crystal silicon in the crystal growing ovens working with the Czochralski crystal growth process (CZ method).

Additional graphite items and composite carbon products can also be custom manufactured following the buyer's blueprints.

The mono-Si is grown in the LLC "NPO “KRIT” growing ovens using the CZ method to suit each customers' individual needs. We use high quality raw materials imported from Germany, or, according to customer demand, "customer-supplied raw materials for conversion" can go into production to get precise Si matching for any customized parameters. Crystals of mono Si can be used in the electrical, optics and laser industries, as well as in the solar power sector.

A complementary line of our business activities is the export of technical and carbon fabrics into diverse markets and applications. The following materials are related to this group of technical fibers: duck canvas, yacht canvas, parachute fabric, along with an assortment of special fabrics impregnated with different additives, filter fabrics and other fabrics with technical applications.

Carbon fiber fabrics are manufactured using viscose technical filament yarn (Carbon Fabric "Ural") whereas carbon fibrous materials, such as carbon felt, are manufactured using rayon fibers.

Kalen DeBoer contract details: Buyout, bonuses and perks for new Alabama coach

Kalen DeBoer will get a monthly phone stipend and access to a private jet in Tuscaloosa. Such is life for an Alabama head football coach.

DeBoer has been on the job for two months, hitting the recruiting trail and starting spring practice. However, on Monday, Nick Saban’s successor had his contract accepted by the UA System board of trustee’s compensation committee.

Through public records requests, outlets, including AL.com, confirmed DeBoer’s eight-year, $87 million agreement with the university.

DeBoer’s contract will run through Dec. 31, 2031. Compensation will start at $10 million annually and increase by $250,000, topping at $11.75 million in his final season. By comparison, Saban’s first coaching contract with the Tide in 2007 was for eight years and $32 million.

Should DeBoer be fired “without cause,” he will earn 90 percent of his remaining deal in monthly installments through the end of his contract term. If DeBoer terminates the contract, Alabama is owed a $5 million buyout in 2024, $4 million in 2025 and $3 million in 2026. From 2027-31, there is no payment owed from DeBoer to the school.

Some perks come with being the head football coach of the Crimson Tide and here’s some of what DeBoer and agent Jimmy Sexton negotiated for:

  • DeBoer will be paid a bonus of $75,000 if Alabama reaches a Southeastern Conference championship game. That will boost to $125,000 if UA wins.
  • A berth in the impending 12-team College Football Playoff will lead to a $150,000 bonus, scaling to $250,000 for a quarterfinals appearance, $400,000 for a semifinals run, $600,000 for making the national title game and $875,000 should Alabama win it all.
  • Alabama promises to give DeBoer a minimum assistant salary pool of at least $9.17 million for 10 on-field assistants. The university approved 11 contracts today for DeBoer coaches, but special teams coordinator Jay Nunez is not expected to have an on-the-field role.
  • DeBoer is in line for $50,000 if Alabana’s football team has a graduation rate in the top half of the SEC and $100,000 if it falls in the top four.
  • If DeBoer is named coach Southeastern Conference coach of the year by his counterparts he will be awarded $25,000. If DeBoer wins a national coach of the year award — he was recognized by the Associated Press and Sporting News last year — he gets an added $50,000.
  • DeBoer has a year automobile allowance of $16,800. Like other Alabama head coaches, DeBoer will have a monthly cell phone stipend of $225.
  • DeBoer will have a skybox in Bryant-Denny Stadium for each Alabama home game with parking passes and 15 tickets. For road games, DeBoer’s “spouse and dependents” can travel at no cost to DeBoer.
  • UA will pay DeBoer’s monthly membership to North River Yacht Club or another golf and country club in Tuscaloosa County. However, DeBoer will have to pay for his own drinks and food.
  • DeBoer will have access to a “non-commercial airline airplane” up to 30 hours of flight time each season for personal use. The hours do not roll over.
