The Hidden Devil in ‘The Great Gatsby’: Review of ‘Dan Cody’s Yacht’

In ‘Dan Cody’s Yacht,’ a symbol of wealth and aspiration from ‘The Great Gatsby’ becomes something similar for a teacher in modern-day Boston. Will she hit paydirt, or a hard wall?

Whatever else, playwright and author Anthony Giardina should be congratulated for his brave attempt to shift our attention from the most popularly cited symbol within The Great Gatsby —that damn green light at the end of the dock—to a lesser-known one.

The title of Manhattan Theatre Club’s latest play, Dan Cody's Yacht , refers to the symbol of wealth within F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel that belongs to copper tycoon Dan Cody and which so captivates a young James Gatz (before he transforms himself into the golden Jay Gatsby). Cody’s yacht becomes the symbol of wealth and luxury that Gatsby aspired to.

Giardina takes that hunk of symbolic clay and warps it when observing the cultural and moral clash of Kevin O’Neill (Rick Holmes) and Cara Russo (Kristen Bush).

The play, directed by the Tony-winning Doug Hughes, spans 2014 to 2016. Kevin is a rich single gay father of a son (Conor, played by John Kroft), while Cara is a single, not that rich, heterosexual mother of a daughter (Angela, played by Casey Whyland).

He lives in the posh Bostonian suburb of Stillwell, and she in the more hardscrabble suburb of Patchett, and they first come into conflict because she, a teacher at the nice school in Stillwell, wants to encourage a merger with Patchett’s school which Angela attends. She sees this as helping poor and able kids, he sees it as being a potential disaster for the posh school.

Holmes is excellent at playing both smooth and slimy; insinuating and charming with a glass of wine and silken compliments, and beneath that hard and aggressive with Connor who’s lazy and not really applying himself at school; just like Gatz/ Gatsby , Kevin has raised himself from a materially tough upbringing to upper middle class comfort. He knows the grime beneath; he never wants to see it again.

Bush is a working class teacher who is nobody’s fool, and Angela is just like her mother.

Instead of Dan Cady’s yacht, Kevin wants his lifestyle to inveigle Cara into not pursuing her campaign, to win her over to his view of making money out of stocks, shares and nefarious financial schemes. Why, he is even has a simply lovely evening of wine regularly with a group of like-mindeds, playing at being suburban masters and mistresses of the universe. Of these, Laura Kai Chen as the serene and also terrifying-without-saying-much Alice Tuan stands out.

Cara begins the play feeling passionately about the merits of hard work and educational fairness for all; Kevin’s peacockish privilege is everything she despises. But slowly, observing what feels like the terminal state of her and Angela’s life together, and the lack of educational opportunities for Angela to progress, she doesn’t exactly relent, but does become more open to Kevin’s schemes. The difference is, she is conflicted; he delights in playing human chess.

Cara does want change. She wants improvement. Her buddy Cathy (Roxanna Hope Radja) suddenly seems to stand for stasis, and being trapped. Maybe Cara can escape Patchett. Maybe she and Angela can live in Stillwell, move, move up.

John Lee Beatty’s revolving and revealing set is simple and a little ingenious, with the characters caught at scene changeover time having little emotional moments in corridors. Giardina cleverly tells a number of different stories and truths. If Kevin is the devil, he is one who seems also to want to do something good; he wants to share the Gatsby dream, ruthlessly.

Whyland is particularly good as a kid, who wants to be left alone to work and do well, but do well honestly and on the terms she is comfortable with (and she is as revolted by Kevin, as much as he claims to admire her). Hope Radja’s circumspect, earthy friend, suspicious of snobs, money, and anything in a posh restaurant—particularly ones serving cocktails with not enough alcohol in them—may remind you, in the best way, of Joan Cusack in Working Girl and Laura San Giacomo in Pretty Woman .

Bush is at her best when she is allowed to let rip. But something rings a little hollow in how these characters end up. If the stakes were as high as the play has led us to believe, a denouement of comparative equanimity feels bogus. And so you think back to the yacht in Gatsby : something very real, also something very real to aspire to, and also an illusion in a young man’s eyes.

Kevin has made Dan Cody’s yacht happen for himself. So many others do not, and yet are tempted by Kevins and other unscrupulous money-promisers that Dan Cody’s yacht can be anybody’s. The iniquities of the public education system remain a damning constant.

Giardina finally seems to be saying: dream, and dream big, especially for your children, but dream real. And if someone today, in the economically fraught 2018, comes promising you Dan Cody’s yacht, sure—go for it. And also, don’t believe it.

What Role Does Dan Cody’s Yacht Play in Great Gatsby?

Jay Gatsby first encountered Dan Cody on Lake Superior, where he was working. The character noticed that the storm was coming. So, he decided to warn the sailor about the bad weather. While being thankful for the notice, Cody started a conversation with Jay and offered him a job.

Detailed answer:

Jay Gatsby was not always a rich and successful man. He was born to a low-income family and had to work since early childhood in order to afford food and clothes. Then he got enrolled in a college and needed to cover the tuition fees. But it was hard to find a job that would not be humiliating or disrespectful. For this reason, he traveled to the shore of Lake Superior and made money by fishing.

During one of his travels, Gatsby noticed a man out with the yacht. Since the weather was terrible, Jay realized that the storm might start soon. He decided to tell the man about a possible hazard. The character’s name was Dan Cody – a self-made wealthy individual. He was so grateful for Gatsby’s help that he decided to offer him the position of his personal assistant. Therefore, receiving this job was a lucky ticket into a wealthy life.

To summarize, the first meeting of Jay Gatsby and Dan Cody happened on Lake Superior. The main character of the book was working there. He warned the man on the yacht about the coming storm. In return for the help, he received a job offer. It seems like it was his lucky day. Gatsby appeared at the right time in the right place, didn’t he?

The Great Gatsby

Who is dan cody and what is his significance in gatsby's life.

Dan Cody was an enormously wealthy old man, a millionaire many times over, who had earned his fortune mining silver. Gatsby met him when Gatsby was seventeen--a runaway with no money and no prospects. When he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor at a dangerous point in Lake Superior, Gatsby saw an opportunity to leave his old life behind and took it:

It was James Gatz who had been loafing along the beach that afternoon in a torn green jersey and a pair of canvas pants, but it was already Jay Gatsby who borrowed a row-boat, pulled out to the Tuolomee and informed Cody that a wind might catch him and break him up in half an hour.

Cody found Gatsby to be smart and ambitious and hired him. Cody fitted him out with a nautical wardrobe, and the Tuolomee set sail for the West Indies and the Barbary Coast with Gatsby aboard. For five years, Gatsby worked as Cody's personal assistant, of sorts, as a "steward, mate, skipper, secretary and even jailor [sic]." (Gatsby "jailed" Cody when he was drunk and needed to be restrained.) Together they sailed around the continent three times.

During the time he travelled with Cody, Gatsby experienced a glamorous life far removed from his North Dakota upbringing. He attended parties with the wealthy where women were known to "rub champagne into his hair." He acquired a certain amount of polish and sophistication. Most of all, during his time with Cody, Jay Gatsby left Jimmy Gatz behind: "[T]he vague contour of Jay Gatsby had filled out to the substantiality of a man."

Who is Dan Cody and what is his significance in Gatsby’s life?

Dan Cody is a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" who has a significant impact on the life of Jay Gatsby. Gatsby meets Cody when he is a young man, and Cody becomes a mentor and father figure to him.

In variant 1, I explained that Cody was a wealthy man who made his fortune in mining and had a yacht that Gatsby worked on for several years. However, in variant 2, I will delve deeper into the significance of their relationship.

Cody represents everything that Gatsby wants to become: rich, successful, and respected. Gatsby learns from Cody about the ways of the wealthy, including how to dress and how to behave, which helps him later when he tries to fit in with the upper class.

The importance of Cody in Gatsby's life is shown when Gatsby is talking to Nick about his past. Gatsby says, "I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people — his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself" (Ch. 6).

This quote highlights that Gatsby's vision of himself as a successful, wealthy man was not just a dream but an actual plan that he put into motion after meeting Cody. In a way, Cody helped create the persona of Jay Gatsby that everyone knows.

Overall, Dan Cody's significance in Gatsby's life goes beyond just being a mentor or a wealthy man that Gatsby worked for. Cody represents the idea of the American Dream and is a symbol of Gatsby's desire to become wealthy and respected. Without Cody, Gatsby may not have become the man he was, and his obsession with wealth and status may not have consumed him as much as it did.

Review: ‘Dan Cody’s Yacht’ Sells Upward Mobility for Dummies

what is the name of dan cody's yacht

By Jesse Green

  • June 6, 2018

Incorruptible, idealistic Cara Russo teaches “Beloved” to high school English students in affluent Stillwell, Mass. Across the river, where she lives in working-class Patchett, her daughter’s class reads foxed old copies of Leon Uris’s mass-market melodrama “Exodus.”

And that, according to “Dan Cody’s Yacht,” a new play by Anthony Giardina, is the tragedy of American inequality writ small. If the setup seems a bit reductive and possibly condescending, just wait.

“Dan Cody’s Yacht,” a Manhattan Theater Club production that opened at City Center Stage I on Wednesday, means to be a truth-telling thought experiment about wealth and opportunity but never gets close to a credible argument. Worse, it seems to have caught a bad case of entitled obnoxiousness from its main character.

That main character is neither Cara (Kristen Bush) nor Dan Cody — a passing figure in “The Great Gatsby” invoked here as a talisman of aspirational wealth. Rather, the story is set in motion by Kevin O’Neill (Rick Holmes), a private-equity manager and arrogant buttinsky who takes an interest in Cara. His interest isn’t sexual: Kevin is, for plot convenience, gay. What really turns him on is messing around in other people’s money.

This he does first by flashing a wad of bills at Cara, his feckless son’s English teacher. (She has given the boy an F on his “Great Gatsby” paper.) When this feint at bribery goes nowhere, Kevin invites Cara to join his once-a-month investment party, at which he and three rich friends study the market, pool their money, drink good wine and get even richer.

His immediate aim is to influence Cara’s vote on an advisory committee considering whether the two school districts — Stillwell’s and Patchett’s, both fictional — should merge. Or, as Kevin puts it, whether the communities should decide “to join the drug-addicted, poverty-ridden, low-achieving children of your little town to the drug-addicted but still high-achieving children of mine.” He’s against.

It would be hard to overstate how unlikely this plot is, and how much more so it gets. Soon Kevin’s attention turns from buying Cara’s vote to helping her daughter, a smart girl known as the “class poet” at Patchett, achieve her dreams of attending Vassar. In the play’s cosmology, this can happen only if she transfers to Stillwell for her senior year; otherwise she faces the horror of a state university or, even worse, community college.

Leave aside Kevin’s snobbery, which the play implies is not just a charismatic antihero’s pose but an actual virtue shared by anyone smart and honest. (Only Cara’s old friend Cathy, played by Roxanna Hope Radja, dares to suggest that there may be merit in working-class culture — and Cara dismisses her as an impediment to progress.) Also leave aside the myriad logical holes in the plot, so gaping that they make you wonder whether “Dan Cody’s Yacht” is meant as satire.

But no, Mr. Giardina is apparently quite earnest about rethinking the roots of class immobility. Cara and Kevin are his test case: she the ambivalent protégée he tries to refashion in his own image. (Kevin too grew up poor, and is, like her, a single parent.) Her initial resistance to this makeover is depicted as petty, a matter of self-defeating scruples and proletarian lack of gumption.

“What’s it like to sell yourself short,” Kevin asks her with typical boorishness, “and then force that legacy onto your daughter?”

That Cara might have a reasonable fear of the markets, and be more risk-averse with her tiny savings than a man with millions, is an annoyance Kevin treats as a character failure — and not Cara’s alone. That supposed failing is shared by everyone “dumb about money,” which is to say anyone not in possession of it.

This is all so loathsome that I found myself desperate to find even the smallest gap between Kevin’s position and the play’s. But if that gap exists, it is too overgrown with love of the villain for anyone else to enter. Mr. Giardina lets Kevin win every battle, even those he at first seems to lose, in the process endorsing his economic realpolitik as good medicine and his bullying as a badge of authenticity.

The production, directed by Doug Hughes, is too tasteful and basically naturalistic to offer much pushback. On John Lee Beatty’s gliding sets, everything is silky and serene, a combination that seems to endorse the values of the wealthy.

Kevin’s high spirits, especially in comparison with the anxiety and down-market gloom of Cara’s, underline those sympathies. Mr. Holmes, who recently played the victim of a leveraged buyout in Mr. Hughes’s production of Ayad Akhtar’s “Junk,” now gets revenge as the alpha moneybags gleefully fiddling with someone else’s balance sheet. I’m not sure it’s a compliment to say that he’s convincingly soulless here. But then the play’s attempts to provide him with depth are feeble: He listens to jazz.

Ms. Bush gets closer to something human. Her Cara is instantly likable in rejecting Kevin’s crass economic come-ons; you root for her priggishness. But she’s wilier than you expect, bringing to the part the same vulpine alertness to opportunity she demonstrated as a political Eve Harrington type in “ The City of Conversation ,” also by Mr. Giardina.

Like that earlier work, in which the late Jan Maxwell played a Washington hostess along the lines of Pamela Harriman, “Dan Cody’s Yacht” so heavily favors argument over character that the characters tend to crumble under the burden . A symptom of that problem is frequent and inexplicable self-contradiction, which may happen often enough in life but muddies the logic of a shortish play.

Indeed, by the end, incorruptible Cara has been converted to upward mobility; over drinks at an upscale Stillwell restaurant called L’Espace, her old friend Cathy predicts she will soon be buying toilet paper at Whole Foods.

The play sees it as hard-won wisdom that Cara is ready to embrace that extravagance and even has her parroting Kevin’s bootstrap nostrums. “We allow ourselves to be victims,” she tells Cathy, “because we think we’re too poor, or unlucky, to change our situations.”

So negative thinking is the root of inequality? That’s rich.

Time Out says

Theater review by Raven Snook

John Lee Beatty’s revolving wood-paneled set is an apt metaphor for the stiff and repetitive   Dan Cody’s Yacht . Anthony Giardina’s drama attempts to humanize the hot-button topic of economic inequality but, like Giardina’s 2014   The City of Conversation , it is less a play than a polemic.

High-school English teacher Cara (Kristen Bush), a struggling single mother from a working-class Massachusetts community, gives a failing grade to the son of Kevin (Rick Holmes), a flush financial guru who lives one town over but a world away. Angry about it, Kevin barges into her life and makes her question her deepest values. They lock horns over a few issues, including a proposal to merge their two school districts, but he makes a generous offer: to help Cara play the stock market so she and her daughter can move up the social ladder.

Kevin’s rationale is unclear—he doesn’t suggest a specific quid pro quo—and Karen’s motives for tolerating him are even murkier, since he’s condescending, rude and vaguely threatening. But these characters have no relation to real people; they’re mouthpieces for oft-argued political positions, pressed into a narrative filled with plot holes and blind spots. Despite Doug Hughes’s handsome production, which includes committed performances by John Kroft and Casey Whyland as the two protagonists’ progeny,   Dan Cody’s Yacht   founders.

Sean Combs’ son Christian accused of sexual assault on yacht that Diddy chartered

This story contains a description of an alleged sexual assault.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been named in another civil lawsuit, this time by a woman alleging that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted her aboard a superyacht the Bad Boy Entertainment co-founder chartered in late 2022.

But the Combs team dismissed it as “just another lewd and meritless claim” by the woman’s attorney, Tyrone A. Blackburn, that is “filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts” they say they have come to expect from the New York-based lawyer.

In the new lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Grace O’Marcaigh added her name to the list of people accusing the embattled business mogul of wrongdoing while he faces a federal probe into sex-trafficking allegations. O’Marcaigh, who worked as a steward on the Victorious ship, alleged that 26-year-old rapper Christian Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her in late December 2022 aboard the charter boat, which Diddy “sold as a wholesome family excursion” but allegedly devolved into a “hedonistic environment.”

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 around the time of the alleged incident, provided dinner and drink service on the yacht from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The bartender also said she witnessed partying and drug use between a “constant rotation of suspected sex workers and other A-List celebrities,” according to the filing reviewed by The Times.

What to know about the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs lawsuits, raids

Music mogul and rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who’s facing multiple lawsuits, is the subject of a sweeping sex trafficking probe that resulted in a federal raid of his L.A. and Miami homes.

March 28, 2024

O’Marcaigh is accusing Christian Combs, one of Diddy’s children with the late model Kim Porter , of sexual assault, sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress in the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial. Diddy, 54, who is named as a co-defendant, is being sued for premises liability as the person who leased the yacht and “had full control of the staff and premises” and for aiding and abetting his son in the alleged assault. O’Marcaigh accused him of orchestrating a “subsequent coverup” of her alleged assault that ultimately resulted in her termination in May 2023.

She claimed that Diddy allowed “unwanted exposure to unlawful drug use, sex work, and general chaos” and “created an extremely hazardous environment” in which staff was often “treated with disrespect, suspected sex workers were sprawled out unconscious about the yacht, and it was difficult to distinguish which bottles of alcohol were laced with drugs and which bottles were not.” She described women aboard the yacht “falling over themselves, panicking, or passing out” after one shot of tequila or one mixed drink, which she believed were “likely laced with drugs.”

The complaint was filed by Blackburn, the lawyer who is also representing Diddy’s former “Love” album producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones in a sexual harassment and assault case brought against the Grammy Award winner, his son Justin “Dior” Combs, Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and other members of Diddy’s inner circle . (O’Marcaigh, in her complaint, described Jones as “an extended member of the service staff” who spent time with her at the service bar and piano room on the yacht.)

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ ex slams feds, posts dramatic video of L.A. raid where his sons were detained

Misa Hylton, mother of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ son Justin Dior Combs, accused federal agents of racism when they detained him at his father’s L.A. mansion.

April 2, 2024

She also made several other allegations about illicit behavior by Diddy and Gooding, whom she said she witnessed “inappropriately touching” Jones, as was alleged in Jones’ lawsuit.

“Like father, like son,” Blackburn said in a statement to NBC News , which first reported on the new lawsuit. “It gives us no joy or pleasure in filing this suit against Christian Combs, who has clearly adopted his father’s pattern and practice of depravity.”

“As long as sexual harassment and assault continues to happen, and as long as people out there still think it is even slightly okay, or can get away with it because of their celebrity, then everyone is still in danger of this happening to them,” added Blackburn’s fellow filing attorney Tyrone S. Diggs. “I am here to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves and I applaud Grace for being so brave to come forward with her truth. “

However, the Combs team kept its focus squarely on Blackburn.

“This is just another lewd and meritless claim from Tyrone Blackburn — just like what he filed in the Rodney Jones lawsuit, which he still has not served,” said attorney Aaron Dyer, who represents both Sean and Christian Combs.

“This is exactly why the federal judge in New York slapped [Blackburn] two days ago for a ‘pattern of behavior’ in ‘improperly [filing] cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly,’ ” he added, “and why he was referred to the disciplinary committee in the Southern District of New York. We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim.”

In the past, Diddy has denied wrongdoing and vowed to fight the lawsuits. Four women, including ex-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura , have sued him since last November, alleging sexual assault.

O’Marcaigh, who is described in court documents as “a European Caucasian female who worked as a Stewardess in the Yachting Industry since 2018,” said she planned to work the entirety of her career in hospitality and the yachting industry but, as stated in her complaint, “those plans have been derailed due to the trauma [she] continues to have as a result of the assault.”

Behind the calamitous fall of hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

In the wake of multiple lawsuits filed against him, former members of Combs’ inner circle told The Times that his alleged misconduct against women goes back decades.

Dec. 13, 2023

On or around Dec. 28, 2022 — days before Diddy hosted a star-studded New Year’s Eve party aboard the ship , which was at sea — O’Marcaigh said that she worked the late shift on the yacht when Christian Combs, who usually stayed at a nearby villa on shore, came aboard “heavily intoxicated” from what O’Marcaigh believed was “a mixture of narcotics and alcohol.”

While she was serving drinks in the studio, where Jones also was present that night, Christian was being “particularly attentive with her, which she considered very inappropriate.” Christian then insisted that O’Marcaigh take a shot of tequila, which she believed he had spiked. She said in the filing that she “felt comfortable” knowing that Mr. Jones was present and “didn’t think anything more of it,” assuming she could return to her work elsewhere on the yacht after the drink. But when she took the shot, she said, the “mood changed” and things “became sinister.”

O’Marcaigh described Christian violently grabbing her arm and hurting her as he insisted that she take another shot. After that, “the situation escalated” and she described being physically assaulted by Christian, whom she alleged touched her legs, breasts, anus and vagina, and who also tried to kiss her on the neck, face and hands.

She said the timeline then became “very blurry and vague.”

But because O’Marcaigh said Diddy insisted on “Mr. Jones recording everything,” Lil Rod obtained an audio recording of the alleged incident. The recording was submitted as an exhibit in O’Marcaigh’s case.

In a transcript of the recording that was included in the complaint to describe the alleged incident, O’Marcaigh tries to leave but Christian does not let her. She tells him not to touch her legs or backside.

After she left, the complaint said, Christian later found her, refused to go back to shore and “demanded that she find him a place to sleep on the yacht.”

Sean "Diddy" Combs

A timeline of allegations against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

Hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur Diddy has been accused of physical and sexual violence dating back to 1990. Here’s a timeline of the allegations.

March 26, 2024

O’Marcaigh went with him to the cinema, which was commonly used as an extra sleeping area, and he allegedly blocked her from exiting. She described Christian getting “physical and extremely aggressive,” cornering her and allegedly groping her despite her pushing back. He allegedly removed his clothes, exposed his erect penis and physically tried to force her to perform oral sex on him. She began fighting him, and then one of her colleagues entered the cinema, startling Christian. O’Marcaigh was able to leave.

She said she was “seriously bruised as a result of the attack,” that she did not consent to any of the sexual assault or misconduct, and that she was drugged and intoxicated by Christian. Images of her bruising were also included in the complaint.

O’Marcaigh said she complained to the yacht captain the next morning but alleged that he “berated [her and] lacked compassion or concern, failed to investigate, and insisted that [she] was probably voluntarily partying with the guests.” (She said she was not.)

After the incident, O’Marcaigh said, she was assigned to work the “front of the house,” which required her to personally serve Christian Combs while he was aboard the yacht. She also alleged that the captain “received a generous tip” from Diddy to keep him “quiet and from protecting [O’Marcaigh] or taking action on her behalf.”

She alleged that Diddy “fostered and encouraged an environment of debauchery” and “did not have any safeguards in place to ensure there was no excessive drug use, no excessive drinking, and no importation of purported sex workers.”

“He intentionally created an unsafe environment that gave license to [Christian Combs] and his friends to believe that he was free to sexually assault [O’Marcaigh]” and allowed him and his friends “to behave carelessly, as they observed and mimicked his actions.”

O’Marcaigh said that the alleged assault deeply impacted her mental health, as well as her professional and personal life. She alleged that as a result of the alleged attack, her mental health deteriorated, she experienced anxiety and panic attacks and had severe suicidal ideations, the lawsuit said. She claimed the emotional strain also affected her physical health and that she developed an eating disorder and epileptic seizures after the incident.

In an unrelated action, Blackburn was chastised in a Wednesday court filing by New York Judge Denise Cote and referred to the grievance committee for the Southern District of New York after receiving repeated admonishments from another judge in a separate case. The attorney, known for his cases against celebrities, has brought lawsuits against rappers Nicki Minaj, T.I. and his wife Tiny, and comedian Tiffany Haddish.

Diggs said of the new lawsuit, “This case, just like others, should be viewed on the merits and not against other attorneys as a means of distraction.”

Lawsuit alleges son of Sean 'Diddy' Combs sexually assaulted worker on yacht

Rob Hayes Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Sean "Diddy" Combs and his son have been named in a new civil lawsuit that accuses his son of sexually assaulting a worker onboard a yacht that Diddy chartered nearly a year and a half ago.

In the lawsuit, the female yacht worker says Christian "King" Combs, may have spiked her drink, and then groped her and forced her to have oral sex. The encounter is alleged to have happened onboard a yacht in St. Martin that Diddy chartered in December 2022.

The lawsuit names Diddy because he was the person who leased the yacht.

"Deep pockets," said legal analyst Lou Shapiro. "That's why Diddy the father is being looped into this suit even though he probably had little to do with the accusations against his son."

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, called the woman's claims lewd and meritless, and attacked her attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, in a written statement.

"This complaint is filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we've come to expect from Blackburn. This is exactly why the federal judge in New York slapped him two days ago for a 'pattern of behavior' in 'improperly (filing) cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly,' and why he was referred to the disciplinary committee in the Southern District of New York."

Dyer says he'll be filing a motion to have the case dismissed.

Diddy though is dealing with several lawsuits accusing sexual abuse and a federal investigation into possible sex trafficking.

Shapiro says that probe will most likely take a long time to play out.

"The federal government works very slowly, carefully, methodically. They're not going to bring the case unless they think they can win it, so therefore it could be several months before we hear one thing or another from the federal government against Diddy himself," Shapiro said.
