DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this Tumlare Sloop

Designed by Knud Reimers and built in Sweden in 1934 as Tumlare No.9, originally called Keb.

This distinctive design, developed from the Scandinavian Skerry Cruiser type, dates from the 1930’s when the great Swedish designer Knud Reimers was at his best.

This distinctive design, developed from the Scandinavian Skerry Cruiser type, dates from the 1930’s when the great Swedish designer Knud Reimers was at his best. There are classes of Tumlares racing in many countries round the world, described by Uffa Fox as “the most advanced type (of cruiser) in the world….” A class grew up in UK at Aldeburgh and St Mawes but the design really came to fame after Adlard Coles won the 1950 Trans-Atlantic Race in Cohoe a slightly stretched version at 32’ confounding the critics who maintained that small yachts were incapable of off-shore voyages.

The Tumlare has a slim, slippery hull with long drawn-out forward sections and that distinctive Scandinavian canoe stern with the rudder hung on the back.

Purchased by the current owner from Holland in 2004, she had a refit period where the majority of the galvanised steel frames were replaced with laminated oak. In 2007 her deck was replaced with epoxy sheathed plywood and in 2014 her keel bolts were replaced.

She differs from many Tumlares in that her rig is slightly larger and her mast is deck stepped, thought to have been done in Holland in the 1990’s.

Used for day sailing on the south coast, she is not an immaculate example but the structural elements have been cared for and she is out sailing on a regular basis. Priced sensibly taking into consideration the cosmetic refit that will likely be required.

It also seems she has a little more sheer in her hull compared to some other Tumlares, a subtle element that seems to enhance her looks and makes her a very pretty yacht.

Length on Deck 27’3”

Length Waterline 21’2”

Construction

Carvel planked in a close grain Scandinavian pine.

Steam bent oak timbers fastened with copper rivets. Originally the boat was built with galvanised frames and these have been replaced with laminated oak throughout most of the hull, although a few galvanised frames still remain. This work was done in 2006.

Galvanised plate floors across the centreline tied into the keel bolts. New floors in 2006. They are side fastened to the frames so can easily be unbolted and replaced when necessary.

External lead ballast keel of 1 ton fastened with stainless steel keel bolts, all new in 2014.

Epoxy glass sheathed plywood deck laid on pine deck beams. New deck in 2007.

Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with a painted plywood coachroof deck and bronze port lights.

Non-self draining cockpit with varnished mahogany coamings, cockpit feels slightly larger than some other Tumlares with a little more space.

Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped varnished spruce mast. Varnished spruce boom.

The rig has been altered from the normal Tumlare design, slightly enlarged with the forestay further forward and the mast further aft. This was done in Holland at the same time as she was converted to deck stepped to increase space below. The hull has been strengthened with 2 plywood ringframes, hanging knees and larger deck beams to take the pressures of the mast.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless chain plates. Twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud over the spreaders. Jumper struts supporting the mast head. Standing backstay to the masthead and running backstays to the jumpers, tensioned with block and tackle.

Fully battened slab reefing mainsail, 1996.

Large 180% genoa, 1996

No.1 jib, 2003

No.2 jib, 2007

Spinnaker, 1996

She has an under deck roller furling system for the genoa but it is not currently in use.

2 pairs of Lewmar 6 non-self tailing cockpit sheet winches.

All control lines and running rigging are led aft to the cockpit.

She has a bracket to carry an outboard engine on the port quarter.

30ah battery to run the bilge pump with solar panel for charging

Auto electric bilge pump and a annual

Accommodation

Basic interior offering 2 berths in the saloon and storage space forward.

Galley to port with an Origo single burner stove mounted on a gimballed frame. Plywood shelving unit to starboard for storage.

Tumlare or Tumlaren

Tumlaren

The “ Tumlaren was once the most advanced type of cruiser in the world ” Uffa Fox!

Designed by Knud H Reimers in an attempt to marry the characteristics of long and narrow with those of the faster Square Meter Yachts that were so popular in Scandinavia during the 1930’s. Over 600 are said to have been built.

Tumlare model

The yacht has a sharp bow and rounded stern that founded the British expression Tumlaren stern. She has an aft cockpit with just enough room to hold a helmsman. The main sheet is attached to a traveler on a wooden strong-back that separates the aft cockpit from the main cockpit. The interior accommodation is very spartan with full length settee berths port and starboard and a v-berth forward of the mast .This allows her to sleep four but this is very cramped with todays measurements of yachts. Aft the port bunk is normally equipped with a small alcohol stove and storage lockers. Additional storage lockers are found to starboard.

tumlare yacht for sale

The Tumlaren was also designed and built in a bigger version, the Albatross (or Stor Tumlaren – meaning Large Tumlaren).

Knud Reimers Tumlaren can today be found on all the worlds continents and in at least 24 countries. In Australia they became a one design racing class and the building and measurements where adopted to locally available wood types.

Tumlaren pic

Today Tumlaren are very sought after classic yachts and prices vary from a couple of 100 USD for renovation projects to 30 000 + USD for examples in top condition.

Newly built Tumlaren are still available and among others there is a Finnish company named M-Yachts who still builds them in wood.

Off Center Harbor's Remarks

(Was $29,000) Her listing describes this Knud Reimers Tumlaren as “27 feet of history, class, and beauty” and we couldn’t agree more. To this we would add that her cold-molded hull suggests she will be relatively easy to maintain over many years whether stored at the dock or ashore. Nimble and sea-kindly vessels, Tumlarens show their Scandinavian heritage on every point of sail, the kind of boat that turns kids in the family into life-long sailors.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

27 feet of history, class and beauty.

Simple to sail. Easy to maintain. Designed to stand up to the rigors of the North Sea and built to glide through the hidden wonders of the Salish Sea.

Finished in 1994 of cold-molded cedar and now sporting new sails, custom bronze hardware, new standing rigging, new running rigging, new canvass and cushions and more.

Flygburen is a joy to sail and gorgeous to behold.

Classic lines

The stunning lines of this rare Knud Reimers-designed classic become even more enchanting when you realize that she has the soul of all-wood construction married to the ease of fiberglass. Both the hull and house roof are cold molded in western red cedar while the decks are marine ply. The cockpit, cabin sides and toe-rail are gleaming Honduran mahogany. She is royally adorned with custom bronze hardware and dressed in new sails that were hand-finished in Port Townsend. Her rigging and roller-furling is new, as is her electrical system, LED lighting, cushions, canvas covers, sheets and halyards. Even her gleaming stainless steel anchor is brand, spanking new. In fact, the only thing old on this boat is her soul.

Beauty and speed is a wicked combination

An asymmetrical kite with top-down furling is included. The mast has been rebuilt with new spreaders, new sail track, new wiring, fresh varnish and those brand -spanking new sails. She attracts perhaps too much attention. You’ll never be lonely at the dock. Or the anchorage, for that matter. Newly refurbished and rebuilt cockpit Custom tiller, solar panel and bronze fittings out the wazoo. More of her snug and cozy cockpit. Perfect for one or two with plenty of room for the obligatory wine and cheese. Check out the gorgeous, custom bronze backstay hoop. I mean, come on. As if that tumblehome wasn’t enough. The traditional saloon is the epitome of warmth and simplicity. This is no super yacht. This is a superb yacht.

A clever little slide-out galley that disappears when you’re not making yourself a cup of tea. Forward of the settees is a roomy forepeak, with plenty of space for extra sails, lines, a couple of pin-ball machines or whatever else you might need. (But the truth is, aboard Flygburen, you don’t need much.) The groovy, and new, of course, electrical panel. Yes, that’s what you think it is. Privacy is ensured with the phrase, “Honey, will you go take a walk on deck?” Flygburen comes with a full set of covers, including the cockpit cover seen here, a full boat cover for the winter time, and all new sail covers. No matter what, she’s dressed to the nines. Takes your breath away, doesn’t she? I mean, look at her… This could be you.

Simple Elegance The simple elegance and warmth of her mahogany interior is an inviting retreat. She has an alcohol stove and comfortable berths for two in the main cabin and two more forward. She is powered by your choice of a Torqeedo electric motor, or for longer stints, a Tohatsu Sail Pro outboard.

Your dream is waiting for you.

Flygburen may be viewed on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Wooden Ships Comments

A fine example of the famous Tumlare class designed by Knud Reimers and built in Sweden in 1936.

Believed to have been  built by Kalle Johnsson’s Boatyard in Norrtälje and given hull number 46.

This particular boat has been sailed mostly on Lake Mälaren near Stockholm. Stored ashore between 1982 and 2008, that is to say for 26 years. Now well cared for and in racing condition, something she is mostly used for these days. A measurement certificate is provided.

To quote the comments by Guy Cole, editor of the book BEST of UFFA ; ”Uffa’s remark that the Tumlare was the most advanced design in the world and showed acute perception. The sail plan would not be out of place on a light displacement ocean racer and even by modern standards the displacement of the Tumlare, at least as given here, is very light indeed.”

For Sale: Tumlaren Ettrick 321

  • July 11, 2023

The Tumlaren class was adopted in 1937 by the then Royal St Kilda Yacht Club as their One Design class racing yacht.

Designed by the Dane Knud Reimers in 1935 the Tum fleet, of which there are 7 actively racing on Port Philip Bay in the Classic Yacht Association Sunday races.

Ettrick is no exception.

Build in 1955 by Ronstan Marine at Advantage Rd, Highett, Melbourne, Victoria. Ettrick was named Chanda and launched with varnished topsides, white below the waterline and a sky-blue boot top. She is planked in full length Douglas Fir with same wood spars.

Fast forward to 2012...

Ettrick was found on a mooring near Sandringham in a sad state.

She was purchased by Doug Jenkin and cradled in the shipwrights Ferdi Darley shed in Williamstown where Doug and family restored her to racing condition. Peeling back through the layers of paint, purple, orange, cream and white the true history was revealed.

When Doug took on the project, she was indeed purple, flew a hot pink spinnaker with purple porpoise stitched in the centre.

After a year or so in Ferdi’s shed Ettrick was launched with gloss white topsides, navy boot top and black antifoul and went on to win many of the classic races.

In February 2015 Doug sold Ettrick to her current owner, Gordon Tait.

Gordon continued with Doug’s excellent work to take the boat to another level of restoration.

Gordon used this opportunity to strip the boat right back and using Richard Blake as the shipwright they repaired and restored her to an elevated level.

New works conducted in 2019:

  • Rebuild of the forward port quarter
  • New deck beams, marine plywood forward of the mast, new bow roller and mooring cleats
  • Complete mast restoration including new standing rigging, chainplates, sail track, bronze boom gooseneck, runners and vang, halyard blocks, mainsail sheave. 12 coats of Awlwood.
  • In the cockpit a new thwart was fitted with new main sheet blocks, new Andersen underdeck winches, Servo jam cleats, A new tiller and rudder bushes were fitted.
  • New paint with a new colour scheme, White gloss topsides with gold cove-stripe and black antifoul.
  • All the bright work was taken right back to timber and using International Awlwood up to 10 coats of varnish was applied.
  • In February 2023 further work was conducted with new two pack top sides, painted gold cove line, antifoul and varnish.

A new suite of Doyle sails was also purchased including Mainsail, Genoa and Jib.

This regatta winning Tum is ready to race – step aboard and enjoy the best one design classic racing on Port Philip.

Please contact Gordon Tait, [email protected], 0417 866 259, for more information or to arrange inspection.
