She's a Swampscott dory with a fully battered balanced lug schooner rig, otherwise recognized as "junk rigged". 1977 Custom Built Dory Schooner. Docked in Morro Bay, California and sailed often. Before that she was on her trailer in Nevada and sailed infrequently on Lake Tahoe. She has sailed from San Francisco to Santa Cruz and more recentlyfrom Morro Bay to San Simeon or Port San Luis, performing brilliantly, especially in heavy seas. (the bottom photos are from the original Flicka brochure and are not of this exact Flicka) Since Bruce Bingham published the Flicka line drawings in RUDDER in 1972, Flicka's have been built in ferrocement, wood and fiberglass. They have been rigged as a gaff cutter, masthead sloop, fractional sloop, marconi cutter, yawl, schooner, wishbone, top-sail gaff-cutter, bald-headed gaff-cutter, lateen, and Chinese Lug (Junk rig). Flickas have crossed the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and sailed to the Sea of Cortez from California, as well as cruised the Sea of Cortez. They have cruised the Mediterranean from France to Corsica and Minorca and even crossed France by canal. There are few oceans which have not been explored by these seaworthy "little ships." Over the years, the Flicka has acquired a reputation for seaworthiness, speed under sail and bringing her crew back home from the sea. Wherever the next harbor is, the Flicka is recognized - her perky sheer, blunt bow, beautiful transom are known to all sailors. The conversation usually begins with, "Is that a Flicka? Salty looking little boat. You can go anywhere in that boat - seaworthy. The Flicka is sailed by people all over the world." "Whether the Flicka has reached over 300 because she's a beautiful and distinctive boat or because she's built to take the sea is impossible to determine. Regardless, the Flicka's popularity is a tremendous source of pride for me, not to mention the justice done to her design by Pacific Seacraft. The many many miles that I sailed in Sabrina were exciting, fulfilling, confident, enjoyable and comfortable ones. She did everything ever asked of her and did it extremely well bespeaking both the success of the Flicka design, the wisdom crafted into it's turn-of-the-century ancestors and the diligence of those in the plant which translates the Flicka into a 20th century reality. The Flicka is still my dream and my most rewarding achievement and experience." ~ Bruce P. Bingham Flicka 20 Specifications These are the hull specifications from the Pacific Seacraft Flicka. Broker's Comments

This lovely little yacht has been very well looked after by her present owner for many years. Both on deck and down below she is very clean and tidy. The outboard engine only has 20 hours on the log, the windows and sea cocks were all replaced in 2005, the running rigging replaced in 2007, the spray hood is almost new and the hull is freshly painted and antifouled so there is nothing to do but cast off and sail away. Once you are at sea you can relax with the brand new self steering system which alone is worth £1500! It would very hard to find a better value boat in this size range.

Broker's Comments

This boat certainly has the wow factor. She has had a professional paint job and looks a million dollars. The project has not been completed as the owner had decided to change her sloop rig to a junk rig, which is yet to be commissioned and she has new sails ready to go. The interior will need refitting throughout although there is a new fridge and washing machine still in the boxes, waiting to be installed. Unfortunately the owner has passed away so this wonderful boat needs a new owner to complete the project. The sloop rig mast is still available if one would prefer to change her back to her original rig. For blue water cruising or a liveaboard this boat is well worth considering at a fraction of the price and the choice of fitting her out is down to you. This vessel has had in excess of £200,000 spent on her to date and therefore offers a grand opportunity for any potential purchaser, however it is going to take at least a further £50,000 to re-commission the boat to a reasonable standard.

Hi Keith, I'm interested in the boat but unsure of its availability, as it's been under offer for almost a month. Could you confirm if it's still available for viewing or has been sold? Thanks for your prompt response. Kind regards, Walter

What About the Junk Rig...? The 32' Junk Rigged Tahiti Ketch   - Click for Larger Image Copyright 2001 - 2016 Michael Kasten   Is the Junk Rig Suited to Modern Cruising...? The junk rig shares many of the virtues of the gaff rig. The junk rig or "Chinese lug rig" is easy to handle, very easy to reef, easy and inexpensive to build, easy to rig, has no complex hardware, requires no winches, is easy to maintain, involves very low rigging stresses, provides a low center of effort so requires less beam or depth of keel, and at least in my view, looks great! That is quite an impressive list of positive attributes... The following is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to the junk rig. It is however a good introduction to a few of the advantages offered by the Chinese lug, or junk rig. Due to its excellent qualities for blue water voyaging, I believe the junk rig has much to offer.    Some Advantages Specific to the Junk Rig Reefing: The ease of reefing a junk rig is legendary. Perhaps it is best illustrated with a brief story about sailing one quite windy day off Port Townsend on Migrant , sister ship to Colvin's Gazelle. This was in 1979, when I was considering the junk rig for my own boat, then under construction. Naturally curious, I asked the skipper about reefing the junk rig. He had just passed around fresh mugs of hot chocolate, so I expected a brief discourse on the subject. Instead, without saying anything he walked over to the main mast and with one hand released the main halyard just enough to let it slip over the belaying pin, paying out about half of it and then belaying it again. The boat was reefed. He did not put down his mug of hot chocolate... and he did not spill any. Suitability to Cruising Boats: Many hull forms will handle the junk rig very nicely. As we are now seeing, fully battened sails are the "state of the art" on high performance sailing craft, for example on the America's Cup contenders. Given proper design, there is no reason the junk rig cannot be adapted to performance oriented cruising boats. An excellent combination is also the use of a fairly traditional hull form with the junk rig. As with any rig, there must be correct balance, and sufficient sail area, with an efficient plan form given to the sails. In my view, there will ideally not be any "western" sails such as a jib, and the rig should approach that of a true ocean going Chinese junk.   Among our designs that are able to make good use of the Junk Rig are the 44' Valhalla and the 42' Zephyr .  That said, the Junk Rig can be adapted to most of our sailing designs, and even to a few of our motor yacht designs. 32' Tahiti Junk Schooner - Click for Larger Image   Suitability to Motor Sailors: A motor sailor can make excellent use of the junk rig. A motor sailor can be 100% sailing vessel, as well as being 100% capable under power, as we see in the 48' Jasmine . There are many other approaches as well, such as that taken by the Gulliver 46 , the Greatheart 48 , the 50' Renegade and the Greatheart 60 designs. These types have an emphasis on sail that is more on the order of around 60% or so. In other words, the sails are provided primarily for the purpose of auxiliary propulsion, rather than primary propulsion. The sails serve the function of being the "get-home" motive power in the case of engine failure. In addition, the sails provide extra boost while motoring when the wind favors. As a bonus, the sails and rig provide excellent roll dampening. For this purpose, the junk rig is ideal. Simplicity: With a schooner or ketch configuration arranged in true Chinese junk fashion, therefore not having a western jib, there would be just two junk sails, therefore just two halyards total. For a larger vessel, a small mizzen or small fore sail can be used, or both, also ideally a junk sail. Ease of use: On any cruising vessel, be it a sail boat or a motor sailor, it seems particularly advantageous to have the ability to instantly reef the sails, or to lower them completely without any fooling around. Sail and battens collect neatly in the lazy jacks. Once down, you can go to the sail to throw a line around the lowered battens if necessary. With proper lazy jacks, there is absolutely no drama to this. Flogging / Luffing: There is no sail flapping and flogging when passing through the eye of the wind, either while tacking or jibing. Safety: Individual "sheetlets" are lead to each batten, a full set of sheetlets on each side, so the sails are self tending. The sail shape can be controlled very effectively. This is quite a safe arrangement as well. The multiple sheets, one to each batten, make jibes very gentle, so there is no drama if someone inadvertently puts the helm too far over. This "soft jibe" effect is augmented by there being a fair sized portion of the sail forward of the mast, as a counter force. This makes the junk rig very forgiving for family sailing. Sail Stress: Having multiple battens, the sails can be made of somewhat lighter material. Sail "cut" is not usually regarded as being critical, and most often junk sails are built "flat" rather than being cambered. Appearance: In my view, the junk rig looks "right" on many vessels, especially so with a somewhat "traditional" hull form. Given the right match to the hull form underneath, in my eyes the junk rig is very handsome. This can be applied especially well to motor sailing types. For example, the junk rig would be a perfect companion to a vessel like the 50' Renegade .   Sheet Schematic - 5 Batten Sail  Spars & Rigging Spars: Spars can be solid wood as is quite traditional, or, without much fuss hollow wooden spars can be made. Alternately, as with the gaff rig, the junk rig can take excellent advantage of welded aluminum tube or pipe for spars. When painted properly the aluminum spars are nearly indistinguishable from traditional round wooden spars. Compared strictly on a strength to weight basis, aluminum spars are much better. When compared on the basis of maintenance, the aluminum spars win again. In terms of longevity... aluminum is far and away the best choice. In terms of first cost (the cost to fabricate the rig), again aluminum wins hands down - all fittings being fully welded and therefore integrally a part of the spars. 48' Junk Rigged Schooner JASMINE   Standing Rigging: Most often, there are shrouds and stays to support the mast, as in the design shown above. However... the junk rig gains a terrific benefit from free standing spars, as can be seen in the Jasmine sail plan shown above. The reason for this is to simplify; to eliminate or greatly reduce chafe; and to allow the sails to have a much greater range of trim - highly useful for running downwind when the sails can be set at nearly 90 degrees to the centerline. Battens: Many types of battens have been tried, varying from the obvious use of wood (easy to make but somewhat heavy for the required stiffness), to the use of ABS pipe (cheap but brittle when cold and limp when hot), to the use of fiberglass rods or bars (strong but somewhat heavy for the stiffness, and fairly expensive). Each material has an advantage and a disadvantage. Although fiberglass battens are a bit heavier and more costly, they will usually outlast the others listed by a substantial margin. Bamboo though is likely to be the ideal for battens: light, flexible, strong, relatively unaffected by heat or cold, inexpensive... and - big surprise - it is the preferred traditional material aboard Chinese junks...! Running Rigging: The junk rig is friendly to use. For example, just as with a traditional gaff rig, one will be handling soft Dacron lines and multi-part tackles rather than harsh stainless wire and mechanical winches. Proportion: The drawing shown below is very generic, and is intended only as a schematic to illustrate the approximate layout of a four batten junk (upper yard and boom not included in the batten count). In most applications, and especially for the optimum windward performance, the sail's proportions would be stretched in order to be somewhat taller and less wide. In other words, the rig would ideally have a somewhat higher aspect ratio, very much as can be seen on the 48' Jasmine .     Generic Four Batten Junk Sail Plan - Click for Larger Image   A Few New Terms... A minor advantage of familiarity with the junk rig is being able to impress dock side wags by knowing all about lizards , sheetlets , euphroes , snotters , and bowsing tackles ....! Sail shape is controlled by each of the individual sheets. Each " sheetlet " runs through a " euphroe " which acts as friction block to keep the tension set as intended. In the drawing above , I've made use of a simpler arrangement using a fiddle block and separate " lizard " eyes in order to allow the sail to self adjust when it is reefed. Once the sail is raised, if it is desired to tension the sail vertically, it is hauled downward by a " bowsing tackle ." If it is desired to move the sail forward or aft, it can be done by controlling the " out haul " which in this case leads forward to the leading edge of the battens. The top yard can be controlled via a line called the " snotter " to move the spar forward or aft, or to snug it against the mast, as needed.   The Double Ended Cruising Yacht - VALHALLA 44 - Click for Larger Image    Converting an Existing Western Rig to Chinese Junk Rig...? Is it worth it...?   That is the fundamental question. Although the junk rig has many benefits, those benefits are realized most dramatically for actual voyaging.  For day-sailing, the Western rig is likely to perform better to windward – and on smaller sail boats, reefing Western sails is no big deal.   That said, if big water sailing over long distances is being considered, especially on a larger boat, there are definite benefits with regard to safety and peace of mind with the junk rig. The rig is after all very simple and easy to build. There are also the practical aspects of there being considerably lessened forces on all parts of the rig, in particular with free standing masts.   Outside those specific justifications, I’m less convinced of the benefits of converting to junk rig - mainly due to the effort required to effect the change.  But if voyaging is in the cards, then a much stronger case can be made for effecting such a change. For that process, the best source of information on the junk rig is within the book ‘Practical Junk Rig’ by Hasler & McLeod.  It is well worth the price.  There is also 'The Chinese Sailing Rig' by Derek van Loan, a book which I've seen but not studied.  If you can find it, there is a very good guide to building junk sails by Tom Colvin, to my knowledge only available from the Colvin family, or in a good used bookstore.   DESIGNING THE RIG For a variety of reasons, I don't favor mixing Western sails with Junk sails (for example, adding a jib, etc.).  As for the shape of the junk sails, Hasler & McLeod seem to prefer a rectangular shape to the junk sail profile, with the battens more or less parallel.  However I favor a fan shape to the junk sail as is more common in China.  In other words, a fan shape similar to the the ‘Reddish’ rig in the H&M book, or like the sail shapes in the images shown above. Regarding the best location of the mast and sail, the junk rig's CE and overall sail area should be approximately the same as the rig that is being replaced.  Cardboard cutouts of the existing sail profiles can be made and balanced on a straight edge in at least two directions in order to find their common center.  Alternately the CE can be calculated.  Ditto for the proposed junk rig.   With that information in hand, the mast location (assuming a single sail and no jib), will be automatic, assuming a vertical mast.  If multiple masts and sails are required, there are more options with regard to sail size and mast location. ‘Practical Junk Rig’  has all the information one will need for calculating the mast dimensions as well as the rest of the rig, plus good instructions for how to build a free standing wood mast.  NOTE :  One caveat however is that in calculating the mast diameter I prefer to use a first principles approach, treating the mast as a uniformly loaded cantilevered beam, then secondarily as a point loaded cantilevered beam (with the point load at the halyard), both with a safety factor of 4 acting against the vessel's maximum righting moment.  In so doing, I have found the Hasler & McLeod mast diameter calculations to be a fair bit under-sized for free standing masts.  H&M do not consider the vessel's righting moment (only mast length) therefore no attempt is made to actually determine the maximum load imposed on the mast.  Because of this, I'm not too surprised to read that a few of their mast designs have 'carried away' in rough conditions, which Hasler & McLeod attribute to glue joint failure.  In my view, since the H&M calcs yield masts of a relatively smaller diameter than a first principles calculation will require, their masts are simply more highly stressed.  H&M do make a good point however regarding preserving a certain amount of flexibility in the masts.   Deflection at the masthead should be limited to no more than 2% of the panel length (partners to halyard attachment).  Using a first principles approach with a safety factor of 4 does bring the masthead deflection into compliance with that limitation. I submit that the cutter & ketch rig divisor of 7.1 used by H&M in their mast diameter equation is too aggressive.  In my view, the more conservative divisor of 6.3 should be used (the same as H&M use for a schooner's fore mast).  Doing so will yield a mast diameter much closer to a first principles approach.  In my experience, the result will still be slightly under-sized, but that very much depends on the vessel's actual righting moment...    INSTALLING THE RIG With the above information in hand, two remaining questions arise… How much more will the junk rig weigh than the original rig, and how will that affect stability and sailing stiffness…? How should you support the mast (mast step, partners, shrouds if any, etc.)…?  The first question can be addressed by simulating the added weight by hauling a weight equivalent to the difference in mass between your existing rig’s mass and center up to the centroid of the new mast & rig and test it (securely please..!).  This test is simple to do and involves very little if any cost.  Such a test is empirical rather than theoretical, and if performed in a variety of conditions, as long as your calculations are correct you can depend on the results that you obtain.   One caveat is that the 'distributed mass' of the heavier junk rig and sails will behave somewhat differently than a 'point mass' as described for the above test.  For an explanation of why this is so, please see our  Beam vs Ballast article under the heading Roll Moment of Inertia . As for the second question… its answer depends on where the new mast position is located with regard to surrounding structure.  If part of the ballast keel is available on which to place the mast step, the main task is then to provide adequate support for the heel of the mast laterally , there being relatively little compression involved if the mast is free standing.  This can be done using built-up floors and fore and aft webs, with a secure means to hold the mast in place.  Then do the same at the deck penetration with reinforcements of the structure locally; a secure means of holding the mast (slightly oversize tube); and cabin knees or deck knees outboard as needed… All of this can probably be accomplished on one's own by a process of trial and error .  However if the above described process leads to a point of uncertainty with regard to the centers, the loads, or the structure, please feel free to contact me as needed for assistance.  It is worth mentioning that 'rig conversions' can be relatively time consuming for me to specify (therefore potentially costly) since I do not have the actual boat to experiment with.  I must therefore 'model' the vessel's form, its CG, and its structure in order to derive reliable information, and then specify and illustrate structure that will stand up to the calculated loads.  On a larger boat, or if cost is not an overriding concern on a smaller boat, the cost of involving formal design will be much more easily justified.     A Junk Rig Testimonial... This letter was received from the current owner of Migrant , one of the vessels mentioned above. Dear Michael, It was nice to come across your piece [above] on the Junk Rig and immediately see Migrant named and another story about Dick Johnson told. I bought Migrant from Dick in 1991 after having sailed on her a number of times since meeting him in 1971 when he first sailed into Bellingham. In 1994, with the same sails that Dick Johnson had used to go to Australia, New Zealand, Pitcairn, Mexico, and back to Bellingham, I sailed Migrant from Bellingham once again, bound for Mexico. I spent a year and a half in Mexico before sailing onward to French Polynesia, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the Marshalls, Micronesia, down to the Solomon's, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Australia. By then I had put four more years in the tropical sun on the same sail cloth, and it had become very fragile. On the way up the Barrier Reef, the top panel started developing tears. By the time I had crossed the top of Australia and gotten to Ashmore Reef, the top panel was in shreds and only the bolt rope around the perimeter was holding the sail and yard together, yet the sailing performance did not suffer in any noticeable way. By that time the sun damage in the lower panels was severe enough that a careless push with my hand would go right through the sail. Even in bad squalls, the rips did not propagate because of the low stress on the cloth. I continued onward through Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. I finally replaced the sails in July of 2000 when they became too disreputable looking, even for me... What other rigs exist where a rip in the sail is not of any great concern, or that you would be able to continue onward for that many miles using sails with cloth so old and fragile? William Servais Aboard the junk rigged schooner, Migrant

In Conclusion

There are many excellent resources for more information on the junk rig. Tom Colvin has written many good articles and a few books on the subject, as have Hasler & McLeod, among others.

For Sale – ‘OpusToo’, Corribee mkII (Posted Oct 2021)

junk rig yachts for sale

In June 2021 I bought my Corribee, which was called Opustoo. It is featured on this page . I bought as a reclaim from Thornham Marina, near Emsworth West Sussex. I spent in excess of £3500 in a 3 month period to resurrect her, this cost does not include the time spent during the refit. I now realise that the boat is too small for myself and 2 boys. An opportunity has arisen to buy a Westerly Centaur for an amazing price. This more suitable for us as a family. I am happy to reduce the cost of my Corribee to £2375 for a quick sale.  Opustoo sat on the hard for about 3 years, deteriorating. Extensive work has gone into her, as the plan was to keep her for a few years, so no expenses were spared.

New running rigging, new seacocks, new 20w solar panel, battery, new depth gauge, compass, 1 main sail, Genoa, new cockpit drains and new hose. Vhf radio connection, but will need the actual radio, as the previous was registered to another boat, but kept going into an emergency mode.  All of the wood work on deck was sanded down and varnish (6 coats) I am happy to do another coat of varnish for the new buyer at no extra cost, before or after the winter season.

Price – £2375

For Sale – Two MkII Fin-keel Corribees (posted August 2021)

junk rig yachts for sale

My girlfriend and I have loved sailing Mashua since I bought her in Pin Mill in May 2014 and sailed her single-handed round to Poole. She is well equipped with a full set of main and as many as 5 foresails all in decent condition. A 7 hp Honda outboard also regularly serviced and running well is available by separate negotiation. Her electrics are powered by a 12V solar panel on the companionway hatch-cover.  All interior cushions professionally renewed 2015;  she was regularly raced on the Orwell and is a slippery boat but I’m no racer now. Her hull and decks are currently being professionally recoated.

junk rig yachts for sale

I bought her right up in Lochgilphead in 2017.  I had been looking for a trailer for Mashua with the idea of taking her back and forth to Blakeney in Norfolk rather faster than my first voyage down from Pin Mill in Mashua.  I saw both boat and trailer plus launching trolley advertised, and thought I might have one in Norfolk and one in Dorset. So I towed Cara down to Dorset with a pal which was an adventure in itself (old tyres and two blowouts in the first 50 miles). Cara belonged to a retired RAF engineer who had spent a couple of years preparing her for long distance cruising off the west coast of Scotland.

He had completely stripped and recoated hull, decks and interior, renewed all the rigging and all the electrics, revarnished the brightwork etc etc.  On the trailer he had stripped down and renewed both sets of wheel bearings and serviced the jockey wheel and legs, and serviced the launching trolley. But, sadly, just as he was finishing the job he was diagnosed with a medical condition which meant he couldn’t sail off shore.  I can’t today guarantee the condition of the trailer because despite two new tyres that have only done one trip and a complete overhaul in 2017 it has spent the last 3 years being manhandled about the yard by staff who are, shall we say, sometimes a little careless.

My initial idea was to take Mashua up to Norfolk but first to Coppercoat Cara and leave her permanently afloat in Poole Harbour (which tests by Coppercoat suggests is possible) so I could sail her in the winter,

So I had her sandblasted and bought the Coppercoat ,but the chaps who’d said they’d do it were always too busy and I, despite my advanced age, found myself called on to work in the City rather more than I had anticipated and nothing happened for 3 years until Lockdown. The Coppercoat is also in Shell Bay if required.

So Cara also comes with good sails, an outboard with 12V alternator (by separate negotiation) and a brand new interior fitted to RAF standards and a new DSC VHF radio.

In my opinion either boat would very happily sail across the Atlantic with very little additional preparation- but perhaps stocking up on fresh water and provisions would be wise.

FOR SALE  SOLD – mkII Newbridge Corribee, 21 ft, 1978 (posted Aug 2021, sold September 2021)

Mk2 Newbridge Corribee, 21ft, bilge keel, draught 2 ft 2 ins.  Built 1978 (PAA 55434), hull number 7878.     Currently ashore for viewing, on her road trailer, near Cheddar, Somerset

Carmina is a typical seaworthy, tough little Corribee – a great starter boat for day sailing or inshore cruising, or for single handed sailing.   I have been sailing her lightly in the Bristol Channel (Portishead and Burnham on Sea) for the last eight years and have done quite a bit of work on her.   Now sadly selling because I am fully committed crewing on larger yachts.

INTERNAL: Four berths in a single cabin. Two single berths forward and two single quarterberths aft.  The interior is clean and tidy, with blue fitted cushions and cream headlining, with LED cabin lighting.   The interior layout has been substantially modified, with a removable chart table over the galley on the port side, and small locker on the starboard side.  There is a Thetford Porta Potty chemical toilet under the cushions between the forward bunks.

SPARS, RIGGING & SAILS: Sloop rigged with deck-stepped alloy mast and boom and stainless steel rigging.  Both main and genoa are roller reefed – the main on a rotating boom, the genoa on a Plastimo roller reefer. There is a good set of sails – genoa, main, jib and storm job (all old but perfectly serviceable), with a nice red/white cruising chute (almost new).    The running rigging is simple – main, genoa and spinnaker halyards and topping lift only.  Sheets in good condition, and a good set of warps.

HULL:  The hull is blue, with a few scratches, and some minor osmosis on the port bow panel, but this has never given me any problems. There are some old fibreglass repairs around the running strake (before my time), but she is sound and dry throughout.

ENGINE:   Mariner Sailmate 8HP 2-stroke long-shaft outboard (1998, Ser No 09989640.  This engine is designed specifically for yachts.  It’s in good condition, recently serviced and a sweet runner – very reliable.  This is a powerful engine for a boat of this size, but will give her 5+ knots – useful in the Bristol Channel tides. It has a 3KW rectifier battery charger, which is OK for top-up but won’t charge a flat battery. There is a large (20L) removable fuel tank in the lazaret, which should give you around 6 hours motoring.

There is a good set of ancillaries:  Clipper Duet combined Log and Echo Sounder, with cockpit read-out Handheld/clip-on compass Cobra Marine MRHH 325 handheld/clip-on VHF radio Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 tablet, loaded with Navionics + UK & Ireland navigation app  Charging socket for tablet/phone Gas alarm  Raymarine ST 1000+ Tiller Autohelm (works OK in a gentle sea, but can’t cope with rough weather) All new electric wiring

For sale – 1970 MKII Corribee ‘Blue Siren’ – (Posted July 2021)

This is a project boat as can be seen from the photos, but is basically a very sound vessel with no osmosis or issues with the mast compression beam etc. Bought as a project about 2 years ago, including a mooring on the River Exe, as her previous owner had been unable to use her for a couple of years. I have done some of the work required (refinishing of some of the exterior wood, replacing two of the three windows, rubbing down the paintwork and wood, valeting the sails) as well as getting her safely off the Exe and buying a very good road trailer (heavy galvanised construction with no rust, twin braked 1000kg axles with four new tyres and a new tow hitch and new wood bed for the keels to stand on). However, my time and energy levels are low as there is lots going on so she needs a new home. Jobs left include repainting, tidying the interior, rewiring, reattaching the outboard bracket and fitting the engine. I bought a very nice Suzuki long shaft four stroke 4HP engine from a local dealer to power her, which is about 12 years old but has literally not been used – just serviced annually by the previous owner and not used since I had it serviced and brought it home last year. I also have remote control cables and a throttle/gear lever for the cockpit plus the remote fittings for the engine, and a 12 litre remote tank, all ready to be fitted. The sails are in good order and quite new (still ‘crisp’, though the UV strip on the genoa is a bit worn) and there are fenders and an anchor and some warps, all the interior cushions etc. so it’s all there and just needs someone with the time and energy to finish her off. I’m asking £1,700 for the boat, trailer and engine as a complete package, but would split so long as Blue Siren goes to a new home. If you are interested in the mooring I am also happy to sell as an extra ‘add on’. It is located just a few hundred metres off the Exe Sailing Club in area 2 of the Lower Exe Mooring Authority, and you can get on and off in Blue Siren two hours either side of high water. I renewed the ground tackle in March 2020 just prior to lockdown mark 1. Contact:   [email protected]

Wanted – Bilge Keel Corribee (Posted June 2021)

Hello everyone, We are a couple from Portugal and inspired by Roger Taylor and some other simple sailors we  dream of a bilge keel Corribee to start some adventures together. We’ve been looking for a long time and it just seems impossible to find one in Europe… We are unfortunately on a limited budget so we would agree to negotiate a corribee even if it is in very poor condition. We are willing and we now have the knowledge, time and space to restore.

The ideal would be Portugal, Espana or France and we would be available to bring it by road if it is in bad condition.

If you know someone who knows someone, we would be very grateful.

For Sale  SOLD – 1978 Mk II Bilge keel Corribee (Posted Feb 2021, Sold April 2021)

I have a 1978 bilge keel Corribee that has been sat in my garage in Newcastle upon Tyne for several years and I’ve not had time to finish the work to get her back on the water. I have never sailed the boat but i believe she started life in Itchenor (original name was “Itch”) and then was sailed on Ullswater in the 80s. She is sat on a trailer which isn’t at all road worthy and was delivered to me piggy backed onto another trailer. Inventory: Mast, Boom, Main sail, Jib, Storm jib and spinnaker Vire 7 engine still in situ and is a runner, although the original metal fuel tank is gone. Cabin headlining and cushions are good. Rubbing strakes and coach roof handles were rotten and have been removed The companion way door and housing has been removed as it was rotten, but i have a newly cut surround ready to be fitted.

She’s a lovely boat in need of with a bit of TLC. (The photos are all oldish pics because I would need to clear my garage to get some decent new photos). To be fair she is in no worse condition now than she was in 2012. Price – £750 ONO Contact – Robert at (contact details redacted – Ed)

For Sale  Sold – Bilge Keel Corribee (Posted June 2019, sold July 2019)

Traditional cruiser designed by Robert Tucker, (age unknown but probably 1970’s). Owned since 2004, ‘Kyra’ and has been moored in Abersoch harbour for a number of seasons and taken out for storage at home over the winter months. We have used her as a day boat and consequently she is fitted out with the minimum of equipment.

Below deck: The accommodation is four berths in a single cabin, two single berths forward and two single berths aft, partly beneath the cockpit seats. They all have cushion seating. There are two lockers, both of which have top surfaces. The windows and cabin hatches have been repaired or renewed. There are also a couple of shelves aft under the cockpit seats. She has a battery and garmin depth gauge, but the navigation lights need rewiring.

Topside: Deck stepped alloy mast and boom. In 2017, the rubbing strip, grab handles and cabin hatch were repaired or replaced and the windows renewed. The genoa tracks and mainsheet traveller block and track were also renewed, as were the halyards etc. The stainless steel  push and pulpits were renovated and the guard wire replaced. A new roller stemhead was fitted and an aluminium outboard motor bracket was added to the stern. She also has an AH800 tiller pilot although we have never used it.

Sails: Roller reefing mainsail and plastimo roller reefing genoa. All halyards were renewed 2017 along with some bottle screws to the rigging.

Additional equipment: CQR plough anchor and kedge anchor, 4 fenders, horseshoe lifebuoy, McMurdo lifebuoy light, buoyancy aid, boat hook.

Outboard Engine: Evinrude 4hp long shaft two stroke with external fuel tank

Trailer: New 2016. A purpose built single axle trailer from SBS Trailers complete with flush kit and spare wheel with tyre, and a trailer lock. Also lighting board and straps for securing boat to trailer.

Summary: Overall she is in fair condition but some maintenance may be required. A couple of sail battens have broken and will need replacing. The navigation lights need rewiring. I have not renewed the rigging since I bought her and there is some paint blistering on the hull.

Location: Oswestry, Shropshire, UK.

For Sale SOLD – 1973 Corribee MkII with trailer (Posted Dec 2018, Sold May 2019)   For sale is my 1973 Corribee, with her dedicated trailer.  She is currently (nov 2018) in commission in Fenit, Co Kerry, Ireland. Great little boat to handle and have fun with, even in winter in the North Atlantic. She is also a bilge keeler and draws two to three feet, ideal to explore the shallow bays and safe; if you run aground you can walk out of the boat 🙂  Anneli J is an old boat, fixed to “agricultural standard” that is, she is in working order but not very pretty. The hull was painted and antifouled this summer.  Any buyer would want to spend some time varnishing and tidying up to get some praise at the marina.  I am selling because I want to upgrade to a larger boat to accommodate the family.  Details: Engine: two cycle 8 hp outboard, serviced this summer. With alternator to charge the battery  Sails: in good condition, inspected and some stitching done this summer. I was advised that the sails are good. Slab reefing.  Standing Rigging: Unknown year, but in good condition,  Mast in a tabernacle, easy to drop by two people or a well organised one.  Running rigging: Mixture of old and new, it’s been replaced as needed Galley: a simple camping hob, new. After I bought it I realised that I don’t want gas on the boat.  Cushions: Old but not broken.  Electrics: nav lights, power to the tiller steering and instruments in working order. Anchor light is new but needs connecting (New cable fitted through mast) Instruments: depth sounder and compass.  Anchor, 25m of chain, 1/2 dozen mix fenders and the usual things that accumulate on a boat like shackles, lines, etc  Trailer: SBS 1500kg – bought new last February (cost= £2200). the trailer will not be sold separately.   the year is approximate – sail number 375 Please note, the boat is in Ireland, so transport will be a bummer. But the trailer is in top condition since it’s new.  ( 3500 euro, ONO for corribee fans   Reduced to €2000 )   SOLD (Contact details redacted) Here she is in Tralee bay.  https://youtu.be/bbBa7YDHrOM

For Sale SOLD – Corribee Mk 2  fin keel boat (Posted Oct 2018)

junk rig yachts for sale

I only bought this lovely little Corribee last year, but have had a chance to upgrade, so am looking to pass the Corribee on to a new home. She is in good condition for her age (built in the 70s) and the hull was re-painted by the previous owner, plus non-slip deck matting applied. She comes with an almost new main sail, plus a good condition furling headsail. All rigging is in excellent condition.

The cabin interior is a bit of a blank canvas ie not fitted out, except for a small chart table and one fitted cupboard. She does have a full complement of nearly new covered cushions. She does have a Depth finder and Compass fitted, but the electrical system needs to be re-wired – very simple. Harriet comes complete with a road trailer, which is robust but only in average condition. It is safe for the road, brakes work etc. Currently on a swinging mooring on Rutland Water, but soon to be brought off the water on to her trailer. More photos available on request.

junk rig yachts for sale

‘Bluebird’ is in good sound condition, but needs some tlc, e.g. some interior upholstery/headlining is a little tatty and a short length of rubbing strake needs replacing.

The present owners bought her in 2003 and have enjoyed sailing her in the Plymouth Sound area regularly every season since then. Sadly, the arrival of grandchildren and restricted time mean that we have to sell her. Bluebird is at present berthed on a pontoon at Millbay Village Marina, and it takes literally 2 minutes to reach Plymouth Sound. This pontoon would be available for the purchaser if required, after discussion with the landlord. She comes with: Excellent 5hp Mercury outboard – purchased new in 2013 and fully serviced annually ( or she can be bought for £650 without the outboard) A full set of sails, main, furling jib, spinnaker (and boom) Usual equipment, fenders, mooring lines, spare ropes, anchors, boathook, cockpit grating, lifebelt Gas cooker, lights and electrical equipment ,depth sounder, log etc (although as we have used her mainly for day sailing the latter have not been used for a while.)

For Sale – Junk rig Corribee, Trivial Pursuit (posted Sep 2018)

junk rig yachts for sale

I am selling our UK built Corribee Trailer Sailor in Junk Rig form with bilge keels. Currently located in Kefalonia, Greece. We stay at Argostoli Camping in summer for €1400 (inc bills) with our caravan. I want another one, but likely a catamaran in the future. The downside is, there are hardly any about with this rig. For summer I leave it in the water in the marina which is free like most of Kefalonia. Only two places charge I believe. The boat was towed over by me 2 years ago, registered recently on the UK SRR (I believe it’s £25 to change names), antifouled, engine flushed and it’s been taking me around the island to date. I checked with the port authority before sailing and all they wanted for a UK registered boat was insurance. £93 annually to note for my first year’s insurance. I just added the SRR as I was advised by another UK sailor. It’s in great condition and ready for its next owner. It has a hinged mast, so you can drop it down for towing/maintenance easily. Solar panel which is plenty as it only has navigation lights, depth sounder and internal led white light. The price includes a great condition trailer and Suzuki 6hp motor with low hours.   Price:  £4000. I may take interesting part exchanges to note. Laptops/motorcycles or what have you?   Contact: – Andrew 0753 204 3141  [email protected]

Wanted – Corribee MkII or III (posted July 2018)

Hello, Looking for a Corribee mk II or mk III. Here’s a list of the things I’m looking for :

1. Fairly ready to sail. I don’t mind if it needs cleaning, painting, new headlining etc. (rewiring ok too). If it needs glassing and renovation then, sorry no! The hull, keel, rudder and mast must be in sound structural condition. The rigging should also be OK.

2. Need not have an outboard but good if it does.

3. Better with a trailer

4. Located (or parked up) on the west coast of uk.

5. Bilge keels would be better.

Do you – or someone you know – have a boat that you think is ok, then I would be happy to hear from you.

For Sale  SOLD – MK3 Corribee, bilge keel (Posted June 2018 sold Nov 2018)

Mk3 Corribee for sale, currently sitting on mooring in Emsworth, ready to sail away today.

The boat has all new standing and running rigging (replaced 2017) New LED navigation lights and fuse panel. All the wooden grab handles on deck have been replaced with custom made handles made in Iroko. Brand new hand operated bilge pump. 12v Battery The deck is in original gelcoat and the topsides are painted in dark green Toplac.

The main is used but in good condition – no repairs. It has two rigged reefing points in the main. The roller reefing genoa is usable but tatty and could do with replacing but boat will happily sail with it as is. Comes with spinnaker pole but no spinnaker.

The sale includes plough anchor and warp, horseshoe lifebouy on stern bracket and new Nasa target depth sounder.

This boat is an unfinished project and it needs some jobs doing. None of these are urgent and she can be happily sailed as is:

The paint on the topsides is peeling and needs re-coating. I have enough paint available to give the boat a new topcoat. The cabin has had the headlining and foam fluff removed, which needs replacing. All the original seat cushions come with the boat but they are in bare foam and need recovering. The front window is intact but the glass is crazed and needs replacing at some point. The boat was on a swing mooring over the winter, and whilst it is heavily anti-fouled it needs beaching for a scrub.

Not shown in the interior photo are all of the wooden covers for the under berth storage areas which are included and have been recently re-varnished.

Additional:

The boat is available with two separate outboard motors which are not included in the sale price:

A two stroke Seagull Silver Century Longshaft – 5hp (£150) or Honda BF5a 4-stroke outboard (£450)

The half tide mooring on which the boat is currently moored is also available at a much reduced rate for the rest of the 2018 – 2019 season.

Price £650 Email redacted – Ed

Wanted   Found – Coromandel or similar (Posted Oct 2017 Found Nov 2017)

I’m in the market for a junk-rigged sailboat, and the Coromandel is at the top of my list of candidates! Here’s a list of the things I’m looking for 🙂 :

*More or less ready to sail. I don’t mind if it needs cleaning, painting, a new toilet, a new radio or even a complete rewiring, but if it needs full-on structural renovation then I’m less keen! To put it another way, I’m not so interested in fancy gadgets, perfect paint jobs etc., but the hull, keel, rudder and mast must be in sound structural condition. The rigging should also be OK.

*It needn’t have an engine (though that is nice, of course), but if not, it must be possible to propel it with oars or yuloh.

*Located on or near the coast of Europe (including the British Isles, of course), north of Brittany.

*Bilge keels would certainly be a plus, but other hull forms will be considered 🙂

Depending on where the boat is currently located, it is most likely that I would put it in a nearby marina (or even keep it where it is if possible), do whatever small tasks are required, then sail it away during the summer.

If you – or someone you know – might be willing to sell a boat (of any class) that you think fits the bill, then I would be happy to hear from you

Hi everyone, I have a 1978 Kittiwake 24 remarkable how much these look alike. I live in Alaska USA would like to find a nice one to bring home. When everyone sees one beached when the tide is out I think they will wake up thanks guys, Joe.

Still looking for a corribee, Mk 1 or 2, prefer one that needs some work and is on a road trailer. Must be otherwise complete. [email protected]

' src=

How does one delete a comment or advert. I think a lot of contributers would like to know as some of the items on display are way out of date ? Ken Dalton

' src=

You can email [email protected] however we generally prefer to leave adverts and comments in place and mark them as ‘sold’ so people can see the various Corribees that have been offered for sale over time.

' src=

Just to add that I have added the dates to as many adverts as possible so you can now see when they were submitted (or sold). I am still chasing a few advertisers to check their status, and hopefully soon you will be able to see which adverts are current.

I am sure you would have no difficulty pulling a Corribee with you 1800 Rover provided she is securely strapped down on her 2 wheel trailer. Much easier than a caravan! Douglas Meikle

I have had Peregrine since 1977 and have decided to keep her for another year at least! Seems to suit me!

One of my Barton 3″ winches (the type with the built in handle) has developed a split in the black that wraps round the handle- it still works but the job sheet tends to get caught

does anyone know where I can get either winch parts (unlikely) or a complete winch?

Im looking for a Coromandel in any condition as I want to convert for some long passag making, a trailor would be a bonus, fin or bilge considered.

A final thank you…. Thanks to everyone for their comments and assistance during my search for a yacht. I was seeking to purchase either a Corribee or a Hurley and I’ve found Hurley 22. To be honest it could have gone either way and my son is now determined to find a Corribee to demonstrate his ability to beat on during next years passages. Very best wishes to you all. Craig

We have a fin keel mark 2 on a road trailer for sale. The boat is sound and the underwater area has been sanded and primed ready for antifouling. There are one or two cosmetic jobs that need doing and there is no outboard. The sails are sound, There is a furling genoa and a spinnaker in addition to the main. There are a couple of spare sails condition unknown. We are looking for around £2000 for boat and trailer. The boat is lying ashore in Invergordon.

Dave Bilsland

Hi Dave, As you may have noted from my earlier posts I’m Corribee ignorant! However, I’m looking for a boat and I’m tempted. Have you any photos to share of your boat? I’m in Perthshire but unlikely to have an opportunity to view imminently and equally would not wish to waste your time. Photos would be helpful in the first instant. ([email protected]). Thanks. Craig

I’m after a fin-keeler. Preferably with no sea-toilet or inboard engine. I’d want some photos before I travel up to look

https://www.facebook.com/David.Robjant

Hello again. My search continues but I need a little advice.

I have a flat bed trailer with 1800kg capacity which is 3.2 meters from mid point of the single axle to the ball hitch. Can anyone provide peace of mind that a Corribee 21 mk 2 (bilge) would settle on it. By my estimations the distance from the boats mid point will obviously be c10.5ft to the bow but what I’m not sure of is where the point of balance is on a bilge keel and whether that distance to the bow is different. I’m simply trying to determine that the boat will not be too far forward and make contact with the towing vehicle. I may have answered this for myself but need to be sure so any words of reassurance will be appreciated.

Also, can anyone confirm the actual weight of the bilge keel boat – I estimate 1350kg.

Thanks again for all you help.

PLEASE HELP

Hello. I’m really impressed with this website, the detail on it and the open and honest dialogue; it make me more determined to find a Corribee of my own.

So, I’m looking for a Fin or Bilge Keel but it has to be on a road trailer in order to travel north to Perthshire. I have a budget of c£2750 give of take but for the full amount I need to be confident the she will rig up and sail away.

I am looking for something before the winter sets in so I can tinker and offer some tlc at home, but nothing to arduous before next season.

I have a preference for a boat with 4 berths and well equiped albeit I know there isn’t too much room below. I need to be able to squeeze the children in for one-nighters.

Having been looking for a Hurley 22, I’m increasingly swayed towards the Corribee which should please everyone on here.

So please help my quest. I’ve just sold my existing boat and expect the funds to be available mid Nov (deposit received) so I’m after something before the year end.

Looking forward to receiving some feedback and ideas. Meanwhile, I’ll be contacting some of the above to see what’s still available on the list above.

Thanks, Craig

very good website! Am interested in a bilge keel corribee but never had a sail in one. Currently in a Swift 18, bit of a handful for a solo codger in a north easter.

Any body looking for crew towards the end of October I would like some corribee experience. Have money to buy the right boat but would need road trailer

Hello Nick,

I have photos of Peregrine and her trailer ready to send to you but I do not think I can attach them to this reply. I could send them to your email perhaps. Douglas.

please let me know if this boat is available or how to arrange visit

Yes Peregrine is still available. Please say who you are and if or when you would like to visit. Douglas

Hello Nick, Its a SBS trailer and seems sound. Original tyres have been replaced as the walls perished, although little used. I trail the 20 miles to the mooring and back home twice each year. The boat is lifted off and then back on the trailer by crane and slings so the trailer does not meet the salt water and wheel bearings are fine as far as I know. There is some rust but the 4 supports and keel platform are OK. The brakes were serviced a while back and the rusted pull rods replaced. In my opinion you should be able to tow the trailer to the East coast without difficulty. I will send this reply and then try and send photos of Peregrine and trailer. Perhaps your email would be best. Regards, Douglas

[email protected]

Also does anyone sail on any lakes or lochs with their boat we are just learning and not sure if we should put to sea just yet.

I have a Corribee mark 2 which I am looking to sell. She is moored in Weymouth Harbour on a Weymouth sailing club mooring at the moment. There is a trailer as she comes home each winter. The hull was sandblasted last winter removing years of antifoul remnants and there are two new foresails`;Jib and Genoa and a reasonable mainsail. I have owned and sailed her since 1977. She is in good condition and there is a Mercury outboard with a clutch and an Avon dinghy. If you are still searching please get in touch and I can send you Photos.

' src=

Hello Douglas:

If searching the likes of ‘boatsandoutboards’, it’s worth bearing in mind that ‘corribee’ is requently misspelt. For example, right now, http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/BSC042 doesn’t show up in a search for ‘Corribee’. I usually search for ‘ibee’.

Looking for apartments for buying in russia.

Choosing the neighborhood of your future residence is a task to be treated with diligence. Poor transport accessibility, a lacking infrastructure and unsatisfactory ecological parameters may noticeably dampen the joy a new property owner is sure to feel from their purchase. To help you avoid such a scenario, we have put together a short overview of the areas in Moscow where you may be considering the purchase of a home , complete with the pros and cons of each of the different locations:

Arbat District – the cultural and business center of Moscow. One of the most prestigious locations in the capital. It boasts a very good infrastructure and high transport accessibility. Unsurprisingly, the property costs here are the highest in Moscow. Despite its small size, the district contains around 10% of all of the capital’s new elite residential buildings, and apartments for sale make up 96% of the properties on the market in this neighborhood. The price of a square meter (3.28 sqft) for an apartment in a new building with penthouses is, on average, 12 000 USD, while the cost of the same in an old building is 9 000 USD. One can even find luxury condos with open terraces for sale in the area.

Kuntsevo District – a beautiful locality surrounded by vast areas of woodland and river beaches on the banks of Moskva River. A strong point of this neighborhood is its good environmental conditions. Brand new and modern residential compounds have been erected here. One square meter (3.28 sqft) of an apartment in a new housing complex in Kuntsevo District currently costs 3 000 USD.

Cozy russian apartment for sale in Moscow

Yakimanka District – one of the most interesting and prestigious areas of Moscow by popular opinion. It is packed full of well-known historic monuments, museums and large parks. The Yakimanka District changed drastically during the Soviet era: most of the centuries-old low-rise houses and mansions were completely demolished or restructured. By the beginning of the 1990’s, new residential and public complexes had already taken their place. Today, one can find condos for sale in Yakimanka’s new residential complexes for the average price of 11 000 USD per square meter (3.28 sqft). The price of a square meter in a Soviet era panel building is 4 000 USD.

Here in Russia’s capital we have our own skyscrapers – grouped together in the compound famously dubbed Moscow-City (the Moscow International Business Center). Many large corporations have their headquarters here. For 1 million US dollars you can purchase a 3-room apartment with a floor area of 607 sqft (185 m²) in one of the towers. This particular listing is located on the 25 th floor.

Where Can I Find Cheap Flats?

If you happen to be a student or if your budget is capped at 300 000 USD and you are looking for cheap condos for sale in Moscow, then the Mitino, Nekrasovka, Cheryomushki, Butovo and Novogireyevo Districts will best suit your needs. These neighborhoods each contain a great number of residential complexes inhabited by Moscow’s middle class. They also have everything one might need for a comfortable life: many schools, kindergartens, big supermarkets, public pools, hospitals, etc. One of Moscow’s Metro stations is also usually just a short walk away. The minimum price of a furnished studio flat in a location within the Moscow Ring Road (a.k.a. MKAD) is currently 100 000 USD.
