the Lagoon 40 Catamaran Features:

Easy sailing.

The 60’5” mast is set to further aft as you see on the 42, the boom is shorter and the mainsail is smaller with a higher aspect ratio, making it more manageable but without compromising performance. This 40 has the heavy-duty main which is recommended for the Caribbean trade winds. She also has a self-tacking jib which facilitates shorthanded sailing.

The “white sails” provide plenty of power: in smooth water, with a true wind of 17-20 knots, you will see over 8 knots regularly. There is an option for a bow-sprit and gennaker which will further improve the off-wind speed –  look forward to 10 knots plus.

The standard Yanmar engines are 29HP but we upgrade to the 45HP’s just in case there is any powering to windward in some lumpy seas.

ERGONOMIC HELM STATION

The helm station is compact but with a seat with room for two.  With the mainsail controls, Yanmar engine controls, and power winch easily in reach, sailing short-handed is a breeze. The latest B&G navigation instrumentation is clearly laid out right in front of you and is user-friendly.

The sloping composite bimini offers decent sun protection and there are clear protective roll-down screens if you should encounter a shower.

The slightly raised helm gives great visibility generally around the boat and the steps into the cockpit mean good interconnectivity with the crew. Moving around the deck is safe, the hatches are flush, and the side decks are wide with decent handholds.

The boom is low to the coach roof and access to the mainsail/stack pack for stowing is easy via steps from the helm position. The whole design brings harmony between the rig and the rest of the boat, it simply looks right.

COMFORTABLE AND ELEGANT LIVING SPACE

The transoms are wide and have just two steps to the cockpit level.

The cockpit itself is compact with a good size cockpit table and plenty of seating/soft lounging areas. There is single-level connectivity to the saloon through the sliding door and a sliding window panel gives greater access for passing items from the galley

In the saloon, which feels like a comfortable apartment, the wrap-around vertical windows bring masses of light as well as giving great panoramic views. There are two opening windows forward which provide ventilation and an option for passing drinks forward to those sitting on the forward deck sun cushions. The headroom is 6’6 in the saloon with the nav station on the port side and the ‘lounge’ seating on the starboard. The galley has a three-burner stove, fridge, and freezer as well as good low and high-level storage space and generous countertop areas.

The interior hull design is smart and simple. The joinery finishes inside is walnut which brings an upscale quality. Large embedded portlights allow plenty of natural light and make the cabins feel light and airy. This 40 is the 3 double cabins, 2 heads and showers version.  All cabins and heads are well thought through with decent storage and hanging space and comfortable double berths.

CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN

The Lagoon 40 is strong but lighter than its predecessors. Weight distribution is optimized to maintain strength and improve performance. There is solid fibreglass below the waterline giving reassuring solidity but they have kept the weight low above the waterline with vacuum-infusion construction and balsa coring in the deck and the hull.

The aft rig position reduces pitching and the gull wing-shaped nacelle reduces slamming in heavier seas. The newly squared-off transoms are wide and make dinghy access much easier. Also, remember the anchor has the roller on the cross-beam so anchoring and attaching the bridle is easy.

IN CONCLUSION

She is easy to handle, looks good and will get you from A to B quickly and in comfort. She is a great platform for couples and families to enjoy the sun and sea in the Caribbean.

The Lagoon 40 Catamaran can be purchased for private use or for placement in our highly regarded charter fleet in the Caribbean. Email Robin Hodges in our yacht sales team at [email protected]  to learn more about this or another Lagoon model.

Regular maintenance with yearly hauling out checked over and bottom paint. Priced to sell in BVI.  Once we bring her to the US, the price will be much higher.

The 40 is endowed with enhanced performance. The larger sail plan than other Lagoon models ensures a better sail surface/displacement ratio, making the 40 a fast and seaworthy boat. The decision to move the mast further aft, arising directly from VPLPs experience in racing, has many advantages. For ease of handling, the 40 has a self-tacking jib and a shorter boom. For more performance, the 40 has a large foretriangle offering a greater choice of foresails and a high-aspect mainsail, enabling use of less disturbed air higher up.

On deck, space and comfort are combined with a new aft cockpit layout like that of the 42. This space is open to the sea, with a dining table to port that can accommodate up to twelve guests, a relaxation area on the same side, and a seat on the aft crossbeam. The ergonomic helm station can be accessed from the cockpit or the deck, affording continuous communication between the helmsman and the rest of the crew. Lagoon 450S

S/V Mystic is a US-flagged, 2018 Lagoon 450S Owner Edition catamaran, for sale by owner.

The original owners are accomplished offshore sailors with 22 years of experience who have been cruising S/V Mystic through the Virgin Islands, New England, Florida, and the Bahamas since she was built. Mystic is currently in St. Maarten and ready for more adventures. Owners’ children are grown and busy, and business responsibilities make it difficult for them to spend as much time on the boat as they would like. This is their second lagoon catamaran, the first being a Lagoon 410, and they continue to love the brand.

Mystic has been the perfect platform for us to make lasting memories with friends and family and we believe it is the best 45′ cruising catamaran ever made. We have traveled many thousands of miles in safety and comfort. Our only regret is that we didn’t order a Code Zero and Spinnaker when we bought the boat for more sail combinations in both protected and offshore conditions. The boat needs only the new owners’ personal gear and provisions and she is offshore-ready.

Sonder is the perfect vessel to cruise distant shores and relax in comfort at anchor.  She has the combination of fun sailing and condo like living that makes adventuring abroad very comfortable for any couple. A VPLP design, Lagoon 42s perform very well compared to other similarly sized vessels.  With her square top main and Code 0 equipped, in reasonable winds and seas, Sonder often maintains 8-10 knots of speed while sailing, even while loaded down with cruising gear.

In a remote anchorage, Sonder’s oversized Rocna anchor, sun shades, large solar capacity and lithium battery bank, oversized and efficient generator with ample fuel capacity, all come into play to ensure comfort and safety for prolonged periods, in good or bad weather conditions. With the sail package, and the numerous amenities and equipment that are offered on Sonder, she is a rare, turn-key find, ready to sail remotely in the tropics worldwide, with both comfort and performance.

Lagoon 380

S/V Misha is a 2000 Lagoon 380 catamaran, for sale by owner. Misha is hull number 15, which if you check the reviews, was better built than later models.

This catamaran has had only 2 owners, NEVER chartered, and is in excellent condition. Only 700 hours on the engines. Custom interior upholstery and curtains. A joy to sail, super easy and fun. The reason for the low engine hours is due to the fact that the original owner lived in Arizona and only used the catamaran in the summer on the San Francisco Bay. This boat has been babied from day one.

The Lagoon 380 is known as the most successful cruising catamaran model. Introduced in 2000, it was built to be a workhouse for the charter industry and an entry level-cruiser. It is a great entry level cruising catamaran that sails better than many other cats and provides lots of living space for the money.

Lagoon 52F (Caribbean)

Lagoon 52F

S/V Cocoloco is a 2016 Lagoon 52F catamaran, for sale by owner.

After 20 years experience as a Lagoon dealer, I made this catamaran perfect for sail and live on board. I removed many electronic complications such as Dometics, Yanmar engines, electronic injectors, and electronic fuel pumps. They are now without electronics. Engine controls are mechanical, no more electronic Micro Commander.

After I repaired several boats with electronic damage for lightning or magnetic field, I saw that they remain in the sea without any possibility to start the engines, without electronics, with the need to be towed into port. So I decided to fix my Lagoon 52 that is much more safe now. The catamaran has been completely renewed in 2022 and is ready to go.

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Length: 50 Feet

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. Every detail is carefully thought out to establish novel and spacious architecture with a homely ambiance.

It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. The Lagoon 50 has an encompassing view, generous volumes with a self-tacking jib, and a shorter mast for easily simplified maneuvers. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Privilege Series 5

Price: Around $1-1.5 Million USD

At 50 feet, this boat is quite marvelous and a privilege to spend your time in as a cruiser or owner. The Privilège Series 5 is the world’s first 50 feet sailing catamaran. This vessel was built by Privilège Marine, a French company based in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. They are famous for building premium luxury catamarans and designed by French Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The Privilège Series 5 is equipped with three or four double and a full-sized owner’s cabin located in the yacht’s center. It’s a lightweight boat at 48500 pounds and could go up to 52900 depending on the size.

Privilege Series 5

Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

The boat is a pure performance cruiser that was conceived as a blue water voyaging boat for a family. At 52 feet, it falls within the size range that an experienced couple can handle, so it would make a great platform for a couple to explore the world. Xquisite X5

Length: 51 Feet

Price: Around $1.5 Million USD

Once you have met your first Xquisite X5, you will never forget its absolute distinctive looks and almost space-traveling styling. The whole look of the boat, with its large reverse curving arches and cat’s eye windows, says right out loud that you need to pay attention. The boat itself is a very modern design with a classic and comfortable interior. It sails better than most of its peers in the 50-foot range and is set up cleverly so one watchstander can hand, reef, and steer all from the protected comfort of the raised steering station. Tomas and Sara, who build the boats in South Africa, are veteran cruisers and owned hull number one of the X5 line before taking over the company. Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Price: From $1.3 to $1.8 Million USD on the Used Market

The Outremer 5X is unlike any other in the yacht market as it is fast, sturdy, but luxurious all at the same time. Also, it possesses finely finished cabinetwork, spacious accommodations, and an excellent payload carrying ability. Modeled great agility to make even a single person handle any maneuver, its retractable high aspect ratio daggerboards assure a shallower drift giving access to the most remote of harbors.

When it comes to the interior, every Outremer model is trying to outdo the last in elegance, neatness, and modernity. She offers an unrestricted view and functional comfort. The port hull suite includes a king-sized bed, superb sea view portlight, an office, and a separate private entrance from the rear. It’s a semi-custom interior designed by VPLP in conjunction with Patrick le Quement. It won the ‘European Yacht of the Year’ and Cruising World’s ‘Boat of the Year’ in 2013 and 2014. This catamaran is as affordable as a luxury catamaran over 50 feet can get. Beautiful isn’t she?

Length: 51 Feet

Price: From $450k to $550k On the Used Market

Aimed at Blue-water sailors looking to sail fast and far, Switch 51 has proved itself and regarded in this day as a remarkable ocean cruising catamaran. This classic high-performance voyage was designed by VPLP and is said to combine a level of comfort, performance, and safety. It was built by Sud Composites in France with high tech materials. Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. This also a pretty affordable option in this category with prices on the used market as low as 450k.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

17 Thesis Defense Questions and How to Answer Them

EditrixJD

A thesis defense gives you the chance to show off your thesis work and demonstrate your expertise in your field of study. During this one- to two-hour discussion with the members of your thesis committee, you'll have some control over how you present your research, but your committee will ask you some prodding questions to test your knowledge and preparedness. They will all have read your thesis beforehand, so their questions will relate to your study, topic, methods, data sample, and other aspects.

A good defense requires mastery of the thesis itself, so before you consider the questions you might face,

1. What is your topic, and why did you choose it?

Give a quick summary in just a few sentences on what you've researched. You could certainly go on for hours about your work, but make sure you prepare a way to give a very brief overview of your thesis. Then, give a quick background on your process for choosing this topic.

2. How does your topic contribute to the existing literature? How is it important?

Many researchers identify a need in the field and choose a topic to bridge the gaps that previous literature has failed to cover. For example, previous studies might not have included a certain population, region, or circumstance. Talk about how your thesis enhances the general understanding of the topic to extend the reach beyond what others have found, and then give examples of why the world needs that increased understanding. For instance, a thesis on romaine lettuce crops in desert climates might bring much-needed knowledge to a region that might not have been represented in previous work.

3. What are the key findings of your study?

When reporting your main results, make sure you have a handle on how detailed your committee wants you to be. Give yourself several options by preparing 1) a very general, quick summary of your findings that takes a minute or less, 2) a more detailed rundown of what your study revealed that is 3-5 minutes long, and 3) a 10- to 15-minute synopsis that delves into your results in detail. With each of these responses prepared, you can gauge which one is most appropriate in the moment, based on what your committee asks you and what has already been requested.

4. What type of background research did you do for your study?

Here you'll describe what you did while you were deciding what to study. This usually includes a literary review to determine what previous researchers have already introduced to the field. You also likely had to look into whether your study was going to be possible and what you would need in order to collect the needed data. Did you need info from databases that require permissions or fees?

5. What was your hypothesis, and how did you form it?

Describe the expected results you had for your study and whether your hypothesis came from previous research experience, long-held expectations, or cultural myths.

6. What limitations did you face when writing your text?

It's inevitable — researchers will face roadblocks or limiting factors during their work. This could be a limited population you had access to, like if you had a great method of surveying university students, but you didn't have a way to reach out to other people who weren't attending that school.

7. Why did you choose your particular method for your study?

Different research methods are more fitting to specific studies than others (e.g., qualitative vs. quantitative ), and knowing this, you applied a method that would present your findings most effectively. What factors led you to choose your method?

8. Who formed the sample group of your study, and why did you choose this population?

Many factors go into the selection of a participant group. Perhaps you were motivated to survey women over 50 who experience burnout in the workplace. Did you take extra measures to target this population? Or perhaps you found a sample group that responded more readily to your request for participation, and after hitting dead ends for months, convenience is what shaped your study population. Make sure to present your reasoning in an honest but favorable way.

9. What obstacles or limitations did you encounter while working with your sample?

Outline the process of pursuing respondents for your study and the difficulties you faced in collecting enough quality data for your thesis. Perhaps the decisions you made took shape based on the participants you ended up interviewing.

10. Was there something specific you were expecting to find during your analysis?

Expectations are natural when you set out to explore a topic, especially one you've been dancing around throughout your academic career. This question can refer to your hypotheses , but it can also touch on your personal feelings and expectations about this topic. What did you believe you would find when you dove deeper into the subject? Was that what you actually found, or were you surprised by your results?

11. What did you learn from your study?

Your response to this question can include not only the basic findings of your work (if you haven't covered this already) but also some personal surprises you might have found that veered away from your expectations. Sometimes these details are not included in the thesis, so these details can add some spice to your defense.

12. What are the recommendations from your study?

With connection to the reasons you chose the topic, your results can address the problems your work is solving. Give specifics on how policymakers, professionals in the field, etc., can improve their service with the knowledge your thesis provides.

13. If given the chance, what would you do differently?

Your response to this one can include the limitations you encountered or dead ends you hit that wasted time and funding. Try not to dwell too long on the annoyances of your study, and consider an area of curiosity; for example, discuss an area that piqued your interest during your exploration that would have been exciting to pursue but didn't directly benefit your outlined study.

14. How did you relate your study to the existing theories in the literature?

Your paper likely ties your ideas into those of other researchers, so this could be an easy one to answer. Point out how similar your work is to some and how it contrasts other works of research; both contribute greatly to the overall body of research.

15. What is the future scope of this study?

This one is pretty easy, since most theses include recommendations for future research within the text. That means you already have this one covered, and since you read over your thesis before your defense, it's already fresh in your mind.

16. What do you plan to do professionally after you complete your study?

This is a question directed more to you and your future professional plans. This might align with the research you performed, and if so, you can direct your question back to your research, maybe mentioning the personal motivations you have for pursuing study of that subject.

17. Do you have any questions?

Although your thesis defense feels like an interrogation, and you're the one in the spotlight, it provides an ideal opportunity to gather input from your committee, if you want it. Possible questions you could ask are: What were your impressions when reading my thesis? Do you believe I missed any important steps or details when conducting my work? Where do you see this work going in the future?

Bonus tip: What if you get asked a question to which you don't know the answer? You can spend weeks preparing to defend your thesis, but you might still be caught off guard when you don't know exactly what's coming. You can be ready for this situation by preparing a general strategy. It's okay to admit that your thesis doesn't offer the answers to everything – your committee won't reasonably expect it to do so. What you can do to sound (and feel!) confident and knowledgeable is to refer to a work of literature you have encountered in your research and draw on that work to give an answer. For example, you could respond, "My thesis doesn't directly address your question, but my study of Dr. Leifsen's work provided some interesting insights on that subject…." By preparing a way to address curveball questions, you can maintain your cool and create the impression that you truly are an expert in your field.

After you're done answering the questions your committee presents to you, they will either approve your thesis or suggest changes you should make to your paper. Regardless of the outcome, your confidence in addressing the questions presented to you will communicate to your thesis committee members that you know your stuff. Preparation can ease a lot of anxiety surrounding this event, so use these possible questions to make sure you can present your thesis feeling relaxed, prepared, and confident.

If you're about to complete, or have ever completed a graduate degree, you have most likely come across the term "thesis defense." In many countries, to finish a graduate degree, you have to write a thesis .

A thesis is a large paper, or multi-chapter work, based on a topic relating to your field of study.

Once you hand in your thesis, you will be assigned a date to defend your work. Your thesis defense meeting usually consists of you and a committee of two or more professors working in your program. It may also include other people, like professionals from other colleges or those who are working in your field.

During your thesis defense, you will be asked questions about your work. The main purpose of your thesis defense is for the committee to make sure that you actually understand your field and focus area.

The questions are usually open-ended and require the student to think critically about their work. By the time of your thesis defense, your paper has already been evaluated. The questions asked are not designed so that you actually have to aggressively "defend" your work; often, your thesis defense is more of a formality required so that you can get your degree.

  • Check with your department about requirements and timing.
  • Re-read your thesis.
  • Anticipate questions and prepare for them.
  • Create a back-up plan to deal with technology hiccups.
  • Plan de-stressing activities both before, and after, your defense.

How long your oral thesis defense is depends largely on the institution and requirements of your degree. It is best to consult your department or institution about this. In general, a thesis defense may take only 20 minutes, but it may also take two hours or more. The length also depends on how much time is allocated to the presentation and questioning part.

Tip: Check with your department or institution as soon as possible to determine the approved length for a thesis defense.

First of all, be aware that a thesis defense varies from country to country. This is just a general overview, but a thesis defense can take many different formats. Some are closed, others are public defenses. Some take place with two committee members, some with more examiners.

The same goes for the length of your thesis defense, as mentioned above. The most important first step for you is to clarify with your department what the structure of your thesis defense will look like. In general, your thesis defense will include:

  • your presentation of around 20-30 minutes
  • questions from the committee
  • questions from the audience (if the defense is public and the department allows it)

You might have to give a presentation, often with Powerpoint, Google slides, or Keynote slides. Make sure to prepare an appropriate amount of slides. A general rule is to use about 10 slides for a 20-minute presentation.

But that also depends on your specific topic and the way you present. The good news is that there will be plenty of time ahead of your thesis defense to prepare your slides and practice your presentation alone and in front of friends or family.

Tip: Practice delivering your thesis presentation in front of family, friends, or colleagues.

You can prepare your slides by using information from your thesis' first chapter (the overview of your thesis) as a framework or outline. Substantive information in your thesis should correspond with your slides.

Make sure your slides are of good quality— both in terms of the integrity of the information and the appearance. If you need more help with how to prepare your presentation slides, both the ASQ Higher Education Brief and James Hayton have good guidelines on the topic.

The committee will ask questions about your work after you finish your presentation. The questions will most likely be about the core content of your thesis, such as what you learned from the study you conducted. They may also ask you to summarize certain findings and to discuss how your work will contribute to the existing body of knowledge.

Tip: Read your entire thesis in preparation of the questions, so you have a refreshed perspective on your work.

While you are preparing, you can create a list of possible questions and try to answer them. You can foresee many of the questions you will get by simply spending some time rereading your thesis.

Here are a few tips on how to prepare for your thesis defense:

You can absolutely prepare for most of the questions you will be asked. Read through your thesis and while you're reading it, create a list of possible questions. In addition, since you will know who will be on the committee, look at the academic expertise of the committee members. In what areas would they most likely be focused?

If possible, sit at other thesis defenses with these committee members to get a feel for how they ask and what they ask. As a graduate student, you should generally be adept at anticipating test questions, so use this advantage to gather as much information as possible before your thesis defense meeting.

Your thesis defense is a formal event, often the entire department or university is invited to participate. It signals a critical rite of passage for graduate students and faculty who have supported them throughout a long and challenging process.

While most universities don't have specific rules on how to dress for that event, do regard it with dignity and respect. This one might be a no-brainer, but know that you should dress as if you were on a job interview or delivering a paper at a conference.

It might help you deal with your stress before your thesis defense to entrust someone with the smaller but important responsibilities of your defense well ahead of schedule. This trusted person could be responsible for:

  • preparing the room of the day of defense
  • setting up equipment for the presentation
  • preparing and distributing handouts

Technology is unpredictable. Life is too. There are no guarantees that your Powerpoint presentation will work at all or look the way it is supposed to on the big screen. We've all been there. Make sure to have a plan B for these situations. Handouts can help when technology fails, and an additional clean shirt can save the day if you have a spill.

One of the scariest aspects of the defense is the possibility of being asked a question you can't answer. While you can prepare for some questions, you can never know exactly what the committee will ask.

There will always be gaps in your knowledge. But your thesis defense is not about being perfect and knowing everything, it's about how you deal with challenging situations. You are not expected to know everything.

James Hayton writes on his blog that examiners will sometimes even ask questions they don't know the answer to, out of curiosity, or because they want to see how you think. While it is ok sometimes to just say "I don't know", he advises to try something like "I don't know, but I would think [...] because of x and y, but you would need to do [...] in order to find out.” This shows that you have the ability to think as an academic.

You will be nervous. But your examiners will expect you to be nervous. Being well prepared can help minimize your stress, but do know that your examiners have seen this many times before and are willing to help, by repeating questions, for example. Dora Farkas at finishyourthesis.com notes that it’s a myth that thesis committees are out to get you.

Two common symptoms of being nervous are talking really fast and nervous laughs. Try to slow yourself down and take a deep breath. Remember what feels like hours to you are just a few seconds in real life.

  • Try meditational breathing right before your defense.
  • Get plenty of exercise and sleep in the weeks prior to your defense.
  • Have your clothes or other items you need ready to go the night before.
  • During your defense, allow yourself to process each question before answering.
  • Go to dinner with friends and family, or to a fun activity like mini-golf, after your defense.

Allow yourself to process each question, respond to it, and stop talking once you have responded. While a smile can often help dissolve a difficult situation, remember that nervous laughs can be irritating for your audience.

We all make mistakes and your thesis defense will not be perfect. However, careful preparation, mindfulness, and confidence can help you feel less stressful both before, and during, your defense.

Finally, consider planning something fun that you can look forward to after your defense.

It is completely normal to be nervous. Being well prepared can help minimize your stress, but do know that your examiners have seen this many times before and are willing to help, by repeating questions for example if needed. Slow yourself down, and take a deep breath.

Your thesis defense is not about being perfect and knowing everything, it's about how you deal with challenging situations. James Hayton writes on his blog that it is ok sometimes to just say "I don't know", but he advises to try something like "I don't know, but I would think [...] because of x and y, you would need to do [...] in order to find out".

Your Powerpoint presentation can get stuck or not look the way it is supposed to do on the big screen. It can happen and your supervisors know it. In general, handouts can always save the day when technology fails.

  • Dress for success.
  • Ask for help setting up.
  • Have a backup plan (in case technology fails you).
  • Deal with your nerves.

How To Prepare For Your Thesis Defense

How To Prepare For Your Thesis Defense

If you are conducting post-graduate research within your discipline, you will come across the phrase “thesis defense”. A thesis defense is part of the things you will need to accomplish before acquiring a postgraduate degree.

The thesis defense comes at the end of the graduate program. It is used to determine or define your education milestone while in the university. For this, you need a thesis defense comprehensive guide to be outstanding.

thesis defense grade 11

You should do a thesis defense after you have completed the course work and attended practicum or internship programs.

How Long does a Thesis Defense Take?

On average, a thesis defense takes somewhere between 30 minutes and one hour. However, the time it takes to do a thesis defense depends on the academic level you are in. While there is no standard or general length for a thesis defense, post-graduate sessions will take longer compared to undergraduate sessions.

Yes, some institutions, professors, or some disciplines may require you to do a thesis defense at your undergraduate level. But the length of the presentation depends on your academic level.

What is thesis defense?

Defending your thesis

A thesis defense is an act of presenting your academic work to a panel or committee of professors and other involved scholars. From this, they can gauge or grade your abilities in presenting your work.

The arguments presented during the thesis defense are to ascertain that you have understood the course and your selected topic.

You will have to first hand in your work or paper to the professor for grading. Thereafter, you will be summoned for thesis defense.

When summoned for a thesis defense, you will be required to answer all the questions presented to you by the panel of professors. After this, you will be required to leave the room. The panel is to decide whether your paper or thesis is ready for publication. In addition, the panel checks whether your work needs corrections.

In other words, a thesis defense is a forum that allows postgraduate students to defend the topic of their thesis before a panel of professors. Therefore, the thesis defense is part of the requirements that postgraduate students must accomplish to receive advanced degrees in whichever academic disciplines they pursue.

Factors that Determine the Length of a Thesis Defense

Just like a dissertation that you have to write a thesis , it is important that you will have to present it. The time is taken to do this varies. The following four factors determine the length of a thesis defense

Determining the length of thesis defense

  • As noted earlier, the level of education will determine the length of your thesis defense.
  • The second factor is the institutional requirements. Some institutions will have a specified amount of time allocated for a thesis defense. In some institutions, that time is longer than and vice versa.

Very recognized institutions of higher learning will have the autonomy to decide on the length of a thesis defense.

  • The third factor that will determine the length of a thesis defense is the consensus of the panel of professors. Some will give students very limited time to do a thesis defense while others will give more time to their students.

Some institutions, scholars, applaud limiting the amount of time for thesis defense and educators because it gauges the student’s ability to accurately defend their work within a short time. If they succeed, then they are good learners.

  • Another factor determining the time of a thesis defense is the academic discipline that is explored by the topic.

While every academic discipline deserves respect, they are not the same in terms of the complexity of the concepts and what the student covers.

Some disciplines will require students to come up with much longer papers. This means that the time it could take to do a thesis defense will be longer.

From the aforementioned factors, it is evident that it would be difficult to predetermine the standard length of a thesis without holding some parameters or factors constant such as the academic level of the thesis.

Also, the length of your dissertation or thesis determines the time you will take to present it at your defense session. Longer documents will take you longer to defend.

How to Defend a Thesis – 5 Comprehensive Steps

Some steps can help you defend your thesis effectively. You should follow the steps below if you are summoned by a panel of professors to defend your thesis.

1. Adequate Preparation

preparing for thesis defense

When you are required to defend your thesis, you will be given a specific date you will appear before the panel of professors for the actual exercise.

As long as you have submitted your paper to the professor for grading, you should always be aware that you will have to defend your thesis.

Therefore, between the period of submitting your paper and the date provided for thesis defense, you should do adequate preparation.

Students will have several months to prepare for a thesis defense. This is because the institutions themselves want their students to be well prepared before they meet the panel of professors.

After all, they would wish their students to excel in their studies. As noted, there will be a specified date for the thesis defense. Therefore, it will not surprise their committee members or students when the time comes for defending the thesis.

Adequate preparation entails knowing or rather anticipating what is required of you. You should be prepared for the kinds of questions your thesis topic will provoke from the panel and practice on them.

When you have the right attitude and have adequately prepared for the thesis defense, it would be nearly impossible to fail. Also, be prepared to wear decently during the defense.

2. Carry an in-depth knowledge of the thesis

This is a very important step when defending your thesis. Since you are the one who has written the paper, you should be fully aware of the topic and the contents of your paper. What this means is that you should adequately research the topic of your thesis so that you can be ready for any question you are asked by the panel of professors. For a postgraduate student who wishes to master their discipline, it would be a shame if you do not know about your topic.

For example, if you are within the field of environmental sciences and have written your paper based on the discipline, you should narrow down the scope of your knowledge to that of your topic, the topic of your paper should act as the guide to the amount of knowledge you are supposed to give for the sake of the thesis defense. Avoid too much knowledge because it may overwhelm you. At the same time, do not narrow down the scope of your topic too much because you will have limited knowledge during the thesis defense.

Your instructor or professor can help you in terms of giving you direction on the type and scope of knowledge you are required to have during a thesis defense.

3. Prepare an Introduction

writing resources for thesis defense introduction

Have you ever heard of the first impression and its significance?

The first impression of a person will determine how the other person will perceive them.

If it is terrible, the other person may consider them a terrible person and even dislike them.

An introduction plays the same role as the “first impression” of your thesis defense to the panel of professors.

You should prepare a good introduction that should summarize the contents of your paper, the reasons why you selected the topic and its relevance to the discipline, and any other detail that you will anticipate to be asked during the thesis defense.

Make sure that the thesis is crystal clear and concise to avoid making any contradictions of your topic and confusing the panel.

Since you will be given several months to prepare for your thesis defense, take time to refine your introduction.

Make adjustments or corrections whenever necessary so that you will have a perfect introduction for your thesis defense. You may recite the introduction or carry it with you if the panel will allow it.

4. Making the actual presentation

The action presentation of the thesis defense is quite scary to many students. This is because you will have to face a panel of professors to defend your paper. Based on your paper’s content, you will answer several questions. Therefore, if you fail during the actual presentation, your paper may not be published and you will have to do further revisions.

During the actual presentation, you should be well dressed because grooming tells a lot about the character of a student. Carry the necessary equipment you will require during the presentation. Such equipment can include a laptop that contains a PowerPoint presentation, a pen, and a notebook. The PowerPoint presentation should be legible, objective, and strategically written to maximize the time used to defend your thesis. Ensure that you arrive early to the place where you will face the panel of professors to give you time to reflect and lessen your anxiety.

As aforementioned, adequate preparation, understanding your topic or thesis, and a good attitude will guarantee success. Therefore, if you adhere to the aforementioned guidelines during the presentation, there is a high probability that your paper will be published.

5. Do a good conclusion

Doing a good introduction and effectively presenting your defense is not enough without an equally good conclusion. Just like you took a good time to write your thesis , you will also need a good time to write a presentation and a good conclusion.

A good conclusion of your presentation leaves the panel of professors with a good impression of you and your overall ability to defend your work within the academic community.

A good conclusion will sum up your work. What this means is that you should include a summary of the topic’s background, the literature review, the methodologies, the findings, and the discussions. Make sure that the conclusion compresses the details of your paper logically. It should be brief and straight to the point.

Finally, the conclusion of your thesis defense should clearly describe the limitations or setbacks encountered while you were conducting the study.

Even though you are trying to show that you are a good post-graduate student, it is important to be clear about the limitations. This will demonstrate your academic integrity and ability to conduct actual research in the field.

Tips on how to do a good thesis defense

A good score

1. Anticipate the questions

As aforementioned, you should anticipate the questions you may be asked by the panel and prepare for them.

The questions’ base is on your thesis. As such, you should go through your paper and list the possible questions.

At the same time, the academic expertise of the committee members determines the types of questions you may be asked.

Try to have an informed idea, based on your paper, on the areas to receive much focus.

2. Dress for success

Do you remember that we have talked about first impressions? Well, your dress code and overall grooming will have a degree of impact on the outcomes of your presentation. Dress well. Mostly, you are required to dress in an official attire because you are going to do a presentation to a panel of academic experts. You should try as much as possible not to wear casual or provocative clothes.

3. Delegate

To avoid being overwhelmed during the day of your presentation, you can delegate some of the less complicated activities to a trusted person or friend. The activities that you can delegate include setting up the equipment you will use for your presentation or distributing handouts to the panel.

4. Create a backup plan

This especially involves the mode of presenting your defense. Since you will be using your laptop and a projector, they may fail during the presentation. It is therefore important to have a plan B. such can include having printed handouts.

FAQs on Thesis Defense

Can you fail a thesis defense.

The answer to this question is yes. Though it is rare, it is possible to fail a thesis defense if you are not adequately prepared and you don’t know much about the topic. This would indicate that you haven’t understood the course or you did not write the paper. You hired someone to do it for you.

Preparing For Your Dissertation Defense

13 Key Questions To Expect In The Viva Voce

By: Derek Jansen (MBA) & David Phair (PhD) . Reviewed By: Dr Eunice Rautenbach | June 2021

Preparing for your dissertation or thesis defense (also called a “viva voce”) is a formidable task . All your hard work over the years leads you to this one point, and you’ll need to defend yourself against some of the most experienced researchers you’ve encountered so far.

It’s natural to feel a little nervous.

In this post, we’ll cover some of the most important questions you should be able to answer in your viva voce, whether it’s for a Masters or PhD degree. Naturally, they might not arise in exactly the same form (some may not come up at all), but if you can answer these questions well, it means you’re in a good position to tackle your oral defense.

Dissertation and thesis defense 101

Viva Voce Prep: 13 Essential Questions

  • What is your study about and why did you choose to research this in particular?
  • How did your research questions evolve during the research process?
  • How did you decide on which sources to include in your literature review?
  • How did you design your study and why did you take this approach?
  • How generalisable and valid are the findings?
  • What were the main shortcomings and limitations created by your research design?
  • How did your findings relate to the existing literature?
  • What were your key findings in relation to the research questions?
  • Were there any findings that surprised you?
  • What biases may exist in your research?
  • How can your findings be put into practice?
  • How has your research contributed to current thinking in the field?
  • If you could redo your research, how would you alter your approach?

#1: What is your study about and why did you choose to research this in particular?

This question, a classic party starter, is pretty straightforward.

What the dissertation or thesis committee is assessing here is your ability to clearly articulate your research aims, objectives and research questions in a concise manner. Concise is the keyword here – you need to clearly explain your research topic without rambling on for a half-hour. Don’t feel the need to go into the weeds here – you’ll have many opportunities to unpack the details later on.

In the second half of the question, they’re looking for a brief explanation of the justification of your research. In other words, why was this particular set of research aims, objectives and questions worth addressing? To address this question well in your oral defense, you need to make it clear what gap existed within the research and why that gap was worth filling.

#2: How did your research questions evolve during the research process?

Good research generally follows a long and winding path . It’s seldom a straight line (unless you got really lucky). What they’re assessing here is your ability to follow that path and let the research process unfold.

Specifically, they’ll want to hear about the impact that the literature review process had on you in terms of shaping the research aims, objectives and research questions . For example, you may have started with a certain set of aims, but then as you immersed yourself in the literature, you may have changed direction. Similarly, your initial fieldwork findings may have turned out some unexpected data that drove you to adjust or expand on your initial research questions.

Long story short – a good defense involves clearly describing your research journey , including all the twists and turns. Adjusting your direction based on findings in the literature or the fieldwork shows that you’re responsive , which is essential for high-quality research.

You will need to explain the impact of your literature review in the defense

#3: How did you decide on which sources to include in your literature review?

A comprehensive literature review is the foundation of any high-quality piece of research. With this question, your dissertation or thesis committee are trying to assess which quality criteria and approach you used to select the sources for your literature review.

Typically, good research draws on both the seminal work in the respective field and more recent sources . In other words, a combination of the older landmark studies and pivotal work, along with up-to-date sources that build on to those older studies. This combination ensures that the study has a rock-solid foundation but is not out of date.

So, make sure that your study draws on a mix of both the “classics” and new kids on the block, and take note of any major evolutions in the literature that you can use as an example when asked this question in your viva voce.

#4: How did you design your study and why did you take this approach?

This is a classic methodological question that you can almost certainly expect in some or other shape.

What they’re looking for here is a clear articulation of the research design and methodology, as well as a strong justification of each choice . So, you need to be able to walk through each methodological choice and clearly explain both what you did and why you did it. The why is particularly important – you need to be able to justify each choice you made by clearly linking your design back to your research aims, objectives and research questions, while also taking into account practical constraints.

To ensure you cover every base, check out our research methodology vlog post , as well as our post covering the Research Onion .

You have to justify every choice in your dissertation defence

#5: How generalizable and valid are the findings?

This question is aimed at specifically digging into your understanding of the sample and how that relates to the population, as well as potential validity issues in your methodology.

To answer question this well, you’ll need to critically assess your sample and findings and consider if they truly apply to the entire population, as well as whether they assessed what they set out to. Note that there are two components here – generalizability and validity . Generalizability is about how well the sample represents the population. Validity is about how accurately you’ve measured what you intended to measure .

To ace this part of your dissertation defense, make sure that you’re very familiar with the concepts of generalizability , validity and reliability , and how these apply to your research. Remember, you don’t need to achieve perfection – you just need to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your research (and how the weaknesses could be improved upon).

Need a helping hand?

thesis defense grade 11

#6: What were the main shortcomings and limitations created by your research design?

This question picks up where the last one left off.

As I mentioned, it’s perfectly natural that your research will have shortcomings and limitations as a result of your chosen design and methodology. No piece of research is flawless. Therefore, a good dissertation defense is not about arguing that your work is perfect, but rather it’s about clearly articulating the strengths and weaknesses of your approach.

To address this question well, you need to think critically about all of the potential weaknesses your design may have, as well as potential responses to these (which could be adopted in future research) to ensure you’re well prepared for this question. For a list of common methodological limitations, check out our video about research limitations here .

#7: How did your findings relate to the existing literature?

This common dissertation defense question links directly to your discussion chapter , where you would have presented and discussed the findings in relation to your literature review.

What your dissertation or thesis committee is assessing here is your ability to compare your study’s findings to the findings of existing research . Specifically, you need to discuss which findings aligned with existing research and which findings did not. For those findings that contrasted against existing research, you should also explain what you believe to be the reasons for this.

As with many questions in a viva voce, it’s both the what and the why that matter here. So, you need to think deeply about what the underlying reasons may be for both the similarities and differences between your findings and those of similar studies.

Your dissertation defense needs to compare findings

#8: What were your key findings in relation to the research questions?

This question is similar to the last one in that it too focuses on your research findings. However, here the focus is specifically on the findings that directly relate to your research questions (as opposed to findings in general).

So, a good way to prepare for this question is to step back and revisit your research questions . Ask yourself the following:

  • What exactly were you asking in those questions, and what did your research uncover concerning them?
  • Which questions were well answered by your study and which ones were lacking?
  • Why were they lacking and what more could be done to address this in future research?

Conquering this part dissertation defense requires that you focus squarely on the research questions. Your study will have provided many findings (hopefully!), and not all of these will link directly to the research questions. Therefore, you need to clear your mind of all of the fascinating side paths your study may have lead you down and regain a clear focus on the research questions .

#9: Were there any findings that surprised you?

This question is two-pronged.

First, you should discuss the surprising findings that were directly related to the original research questions . Going into your research, you likely had some expectations in terms of what you would find, so this is your opportunity to discuss the outcomes that emerged as contrary to what you initially expected. You’ll also want to think about what the reasons for these contrasts may be.

Second, you should discuss the findings that weren’t directly related to the research questions, but that emerged from the data set . You may have a few or you may have none – although generally there are a handful of interesting musings that you can glean from the data set. Again, make sure you can articulate why you find these interesting and what it means for future research in the area.

What the committee is looking for in this type of question is your ability to interpret the findings holistically and comprehensively , and to respond to unexpected data. So, take the time to zoom out and reflect on your findings thoroughly.

Discuss the findings in your defense

#10: What biases may exist in your research?

Biases… we all have them.

For this question, you’ll need to think about potential biases in your research , in the data itself but also in your interpretation of the data. With this question, your committee is assessing whether you have considered your own potential biases and the biases inherent in your analysis approach (i.e. your methodology). So, think carefully about these research biases and be ready to explain how these may exist in your study.

In an oral defense, this question is often followed up with a question on how the biases were mitigated or could be mitigated in future research. So, give some thought not just to what biases may exist, but also the mitigation measures (in your own study and for future research).

#11: How can your findings be put into practice?

Another classic question in the typical viva voce.

With this question, your committee is assessing your ability to bring your findings back down to earth and demonstrate their practical value and application. Importantly, this question is not about the contribution to academia or the overall field of research (we’ll get to that next) – it is specifically asking about how this newly created knowledge can be used in the real world.

Naturally, the actionability of your findings will vary depending on the nature of your research topic. Some studies will produce many action points and some won’t. If you’re researching marketing strategies within an industry, for example, you should be able to make some very specific recommendations for marketing practitioners in that industry.

To help you flesh out points for this question, look back at your original justification for the research (i.e. in your introduction and literature review chapters). What were the driving forces that led you to research your specific topic? That justification should help you identify ways in which your findings can be put into practice.

#12: How has your research contributed to current thinking in the field?

While the previous question was aimed at practical contribution, this question is aimed at theoretical contribution . In other words, what is the significance of your study within the current body of research? How does it fit into the existing research and what does it add to it?

This question is often asked by a field specialist and is used to assess whether you’re able to place your findings into the research field to critically convey what your research contributed. This argument needs to be well justified – in other words, you can’t just discuss what your research contributed, you need to also back each proposition up with a strong why .

To answer this question well, you need to humbly consider the quality and impact of your work and to be realistic in your response. You don’t want to come across as arrogant (“my work is groundbreaking”), nor do you want to undersell the impact of your work. So, it’s important to strike the right balance between realistic and pessimistic .

This question also opens the door to questions about potential future research . So, think about what future research opportunities your study has created and which of these you feel are of the highest priority.

Discuss your contribution in your thesis defence

#13: If you could redo your research, how would you alter your approach?

This question is often used to wrap up a viva voce as it brings the discussion full circle.

Here, your committee is again assessing your ability to clearly identify and articulate the limitations and shortcomings of your research, both in terms of research design and topic focus . Perhaps, in hindsight, it would have been better to use a different analysis method or data set. Perhaps the research questions should have leaned in a slightly different direction. And so on.

This question intends to assess whether you’re able to look at your work critically , assess where the weaknesses are and make recommendations for the future. This question often sets apart those who did the research purely because it was required, from those that genuinely engaged with their research. So, don’t hold back here – reflect on your entire research journey ask yourself how you’d do things differently if you were starting with a  blank canvas today.

How to Effectively Prepare for Your Thesis Defense

thesis defense grade 11

You’ve completed your research study, written your thesis, and think you’re done! If only it were this easy. Before you finish with your thesis, there is one last hurdle to overcome: the thesis defense.

A thesis defense is an opportunity for you to present your research study before other academic professionals who will evaluate the quality of your academic work. While a thesis defense can sometimes feel like a cross-examination in a court of law, in reality, there is no need to fear your thesis defense as long as you are well-prepared. In this article, we’ll talk about how to prepare for a thesis defense, what to expect at the defense itself, and what comes after your defense.

Why do I have to defend my thesis?

At your thesis defense, you will discuss everything you’ve learned with a group of interested examiners who are eager to hear your thoughts.

The fundamental purpose of a thesis defense is to prove that you have mastered your subject and can be considered as a knowledgeable expert in your field, thereby allowing you to graduate successfully. For many students, a thesis is one of the first attempts at conducting original research and demonstrating that you are equipped to function as an independent expert in your field. If qualified academic professionals can assess your work, question your methods and results, and confirm that your study is sound and novel, then you meet the requirements.

The exact format and expectations for your thesis defense will differ depending on the region you study in and your institution’s rules for the thesis program. The thesis defense meeting may have just two or three examiners or may have a whole panel of examiners along with an audience.

If the thought of facing your professors, peers, and parents to present your research study makes you feel dizzy, you aren’t alone . Moreover, a thesis defense is a great opportunity for you to hone your public speaking skills as well as talk about your research study. At your thesis defense, you will discuss everything you’ve learned with a group of interested examiners who are eager to hear your thoughts.

While the format for a thesis defense will vary, as mentioned above, most thesis defenses consist of:

  • Presenting your research study (using PowerPoint or other similar tools)
  • Answering questions from your thesis committee
  • Receiving feedback from your thesis committee

So how can you prepare for it? Let’s talk about some important tips.

Preparing: Before the defense

It is useful to attend multiple defenses and ask others who have gone through the process what it was like.

The best way to prepare for a thesis defense is to attend other defenses at your institution so that you know what to expect. It is useful to attend multiple defenses and ask others who have gone through the process what it was like. Senior students are often happy to provide advice and can give you specific insights about particular examiners as well as details of the administrative process at your institution.

You should also talk to your thesis advisor well in advance of your defense about what to expect. Ask whether you need to shortlist your own committee, how long your presentation should be, and how long the thesis defense will be. The duration of a thesis defense varies by the degree level as well as the institution. On average, expect your defense to be at least an hour long, possibly longer for a Ph.D.

What should my presentation cover and how can I prepare it?

While preparing your presentation, also prepare a list of questions and answers that you think are likely to be asked by your committee.

You will need to prepare a presentation that will cover the details of your research study. It is wise to rehearse this presentation multiple times in advance of your thesis defense so that you will be comfortable when you actually present in front of your audience. While preparing your presentation, also prepare a list of questions and answers that you think are likely to be asked by your committee. If you can, enlist the help of a classmate or friend to be the examiner. They can ask you questions about your research study so you will be able to practice addressing these questions.

One mistake many students make is assuming that all members of their defense committee will thoroughly read their thesis prior to the defense. This is simply not always the case. For this reason, you should make sure your presentation makes sense to someone who has not actually read your thesis. A typical thesis defense presentation gives:

  • An introduction to the topic
  • Explains how the study is significant in the field
  • Covers the main highlights of the methodology and results of the study
  • Picks out the main points from the discussion and conclusion

What should I do the day before my defense?

Before your thesis defense, make sure you have backups of everything you need saved in multiple formats and multiple locations.

Before your thesis defense, make sure you have backups of everything you need to be saved in multiple formats and multiple locations. Put your presentation and your thesis on a USB drive, email it to yourself, upload it to the cloud, and print it out. Leave nothing to chance: you want to be absolutely prepared to defend your thesis short of an act of God obliterating the venue. In addition, make sure you prepare hard copies (printouts) of both your thesis and slideshow for the committee members. It need not be professionally bound at this stage, but they will appreciate having reference material on hand.

Finally, there are some practical steps to take in preparation for the thesis defense. Choose your outfit in advance (you should dress professionally) and practice presenting in it. You should also make sure you know the exact location of the thesis defense venue. Scope out the venue before your defense, if possible, so you can imagine yourself there while you rehearse. If you are presenting virtually, test all your equipment in advance and have a backup plan in case your internet goes out or your computer suddenly crashes. Most importantly, make sure that you eat well and get proper rest the night before. Don’t stay up late rehearsing last minute in the hopes of improving your chances of passing your defense. You will do much better if you are well-rested and alert.

Time to shine: At the defense

Try to stay calm and remember you are not on trial!

What can you expect on the day of the defense?

Typically, you will enter the room, set up, and begin your presentation once the committee indicates that they are ready. As mentioned above, it is always advisable to bring hard copies of both your thesis and slideshow for the committee. That way, they can easily refer to what you are talking about as you present. Make sure you also bring a pencil and notebook with you to take notes, and some water, because you will get thirsty as you talk.

After you are done with the presentation, the committee members will ask questions. Try to stay calm and remember you are not on trial! Your committee generally wants you to succeed, but they also want you to prove that you really know what you’re talking about. Do your best to answer their questions and never be afraid to admit when you don’t know something. It is much better, to be honest than to be caught lying or making something up during your thesis defense.

After the question and answer session, depending on your institution, you may be asked to leave the room while the committee deliberates. You may also be present while they discuss the merits of your defense and make suggestions for how to revise it. Alternatively, they might adjourn to another room if there is a large audience present. After they deliberate, they will usually thank you for your time, and your defense will be over. At some institutions, they will inform you if you passed right away, while at others, you will find out after a few days.

How does my committee decide if my work is good or not?

In general, you can expect your thesis defense and your thesis as a whole to be evaluated based on the below criteria:

  • Whether the thesis meets the departmental requirements
  • Whether the research study is logical and clear
  • Whether the stated objectives are met in the study
  • Use of primary and secondary literature
  • Use of relevant and up-to-date sources
  • Methodological rigor
  • Your ability to critically analyze data, facts, relevant literature, and synthesize information into a coherent narrative
  • Writing quality and flow
  • The validity of your conclusions based on your data and analysis
  • The relevance and importance of your research study in the field
  • Your ability to clearly and coherently present what your thesis is about
  • Your ability to answer questions about your work accurately and in-depth
  • Your ability to acknowledge and consider other theories or perspectives and explain why you dismissed one theory in favor of another

In summary, the examining committee want to know:

  • Did you meet the thesis criteria set by your institution?
  • Did you perform high-quality research work?
  • Do you know what you are talking about?

After the defense: What’s next?

After your thesis is approved, you will need to have it professionally bound and then submit copies to your university.

After your thesis defense, you should definitely celebrate and congratulate yourself for all your hard work! Unfortunately, you aren’t quite done yet. Although the committee may notify you about passing, it is also very likely that you will be asked to make some changes to your thesis before you are finally done. You should work with your advisor to finalize and incorporate any comments you received into your work as quickly as possible.

After your thesis is approved, you will need to have it professionally bound and then submit copies to your university. You will also get the chance to order copies for yourself. This process also differs by institution, so make sure you talk to the administration department to figure out what you need to do and when to complete this process.

All in all, while a thesis defense is a scary and overwhelming event, it is also an incredible achievement. Earning your degree is no small feat, and you should definitely feel proud of yourself once you have done it! Definition: Thesis Defense

A thesis defense is an act of presenting your work to a panel of professors so they can grade your presentation abilities. In retrospect, the argument is essential to ascertain that you understood the topic. You have to hand in your paper first so that the lecturer can grade it before you appear for the defense.

As a university student, you need to hand in a high-quality thesis paper and defend it before a panel of professors. So what is this that takes place during a thesis defense? Read along to find out.

In a Nutshell

So, there you have it. These tips should help you present your thesis defense and ace it. Remember that:

  • You should present facts that are in the paper. Do not add any new information
  • Make the thesis defense as enjoyable as possible
  • Arrive early enough
  • Do not exceed your allocated time
  • Confidence goes a long way

Before the Thesis Defense

Before the day of the thesis defense, the qualifying students receive a timetable that shows the chronology of how the day will be. You are required to keep time, or else you will have to wait until the next allocated defense to present your paper. To qualify as a defending student, you have to hand in your paper at least one month before the thesis defense date.

What happens in a Thesis Defense?

Once you get to the hall, you need to introduce yourself and your topic, then present your paper to the lecturers. The professors will allocate you ¾ of the allotted time for the thesis defense. The remaining time is used up in the question and answer forum. Prepare yourself to answer several questions, such as:

  • Your plans after completing the research
  • The limitations you faced
  • Things that you would change if given a chance
  • How you chose your target audience
  • How you intend to further your study on the subject
  • The reasons for choosing your topic
  • The most significant deductions you learned from the survey
  • Reasons for choosing your research methodology, etc.

In some cases, the board may ask you to summarize your deductions from the study. The questions asked are not standard, which means you have to be thoroughly prepared to answer whatever the panel throws your way during the thesis defense. Other things that take place during the thesis defense include:

  • Deliberations – At this point, the board of lecturers will ask you to leave the room as they deliberate on your thesis defense performance. They will then decide whether you move to the next level or you will defend again.
  • Verdict – Finally, the team will invite you back in and tell you how you performed in the thesis defense. These panel members may ask you to make a few corrections before you can go ahead and publish your paper. You have to present your corrections to your facilitator, who will then give you the go-ahead to publish.
  • Signing – The members will then sign your document to ascertain that you were part of the thesis defense team on the selected date.

How much time does a Thesis Defense take and how many people should be in the room?

During a thesis defense, each student appears before the panel individually. The facilitators will ask you questions concerning your topic to see if you fully grasped the concept. Each thesis defense will vary from the other depending on the technicality of your paper and the kind of degree you are pursuing.

  • Undergraduate degree – Your panel may include at least three lecturers from your faculty. Additionally, the defense may last up to one hour.
  • Masters degree – You get to interact with four professors at this level, and each student is allotted 1½ hours to present and answer questions.
  • Ph.D. degree – Considering that this is the highest education level, five professors avail themselves to vet you. More so, you may have to engage them for two hours.

What to include?

A thesis defense follows a particular format, which cuts across all types of degrees, which is:

  • Introduction  – Explain the need for this study
  • Literature review  – Explain what other scholars have found on the subject
  • Research methodology  – What research method did you use, and why did you use it?
  • Findings and discussions  – In your research, what were the key deductions that you came upon?
  • Implications, limitations, suggestions, and  conclusion  – Here, you have to exhaust the setbacks you encountered during the study, the consequences that your target audience will face if they do not follow the deductions, and then finally sum up the discussions.

Tools for Thesis Defense

Considering that a thesis defense may take you at least 45 minutes to present, it is essential to make the presentation lively. So, you can incorporate a slide show and use images to make it less wordy. Bullet points also make the text easier to digest as opposed to a block of text. So, a laptop and a projector will help you ace your presentation.

Thesis Defense Anxiety

Standing before a panel of people waiting to hear how you conducted your research can be intimidating. This is especially so considering that you will be standing before a group of professors, who you believe to be superior to you in regards to the topic knowledge. More so, if you are not familiar with public speaking, it is easy to develop stage fright while defending.

Manage Thesis Defense Anxiety

In case you find yourself fidgeting before you begin presenting, use the following tips to help you get your composure back.

  • If you have a problem with eye-balling the lecturers, look at the tips of their foreheads instead.
  • Take a few seconds to breathe in and out so you can stabilize your speech if you begin to stammer.
  • Go into the room with a positive mind, knowing that you will do your best.
  • Most importantly, rehearse your thesis defense severally before the D-day.

A scholarly thesis defense is a forum that allows students to present their paper’s contents and defend their thesis topic before a panel of professors. The student is then required to answer all questions asked by the lecturers. At the end, the student is required to leave the room whilst the professors decide whether the thesis is ready to be published, or if it needs corrections.

How long is a thesis defense?

There is no general length for a thesis defense. The defense of a master’s thesis will take longer than the defense of a bachelor’s thesis. You will need to fit in an introduction , a literature review, your findings and even more into the time frame for your thesis defense, so it’s important that you’re well prepared. All in all, it depends on your paper and your academic field. Usually the thesis defense will last between one and two hours, but it also could be less than one hour.

What is the oral defense of a thesis?

Oral defense is simply another name for your thesis defense. If you’ve completed your thesis, you are required to defend it in front of a panel of professors. It is designed so that the committee can ensure that the students completely understand their thesis topic . The oral thesis defense is an examination of a completed body of work. Students will be assigned a date to defend their thesis.

What happens after the thesis defense?

After your thesis defense, you will be told to leave the room whilst the panel discusses your results. There are normally 2 outcomes. You may need to make changes to your thesis’ formatting or content. If this is the case, don’t stress! You’re able to try the thesis defense again once you’ve incorporated any required changes. The preferred outcome is that the panel is happy with your thesis and it’s then ready to be signed and published.

What defines a good thesis defense?

The thesis defense is the final step for your academic work. It’s important that you’re prepared and you’ve outlined what you’re going to say in each section of the defense. You need to know your thesis statement better than the back of your hand, otherwise you risk being sidetracked. Just like your thesis itself, your thesis defense has a specific structure. You can read more about this further on in the article. Try and prepare yourself for the potential types of questions that the professors will ask you so that you don’t have to think about your answers on the spot.

Know your thesis.

We put this first knowing that it is the most important element of your entire presentation. The crux of your defense hinges on this. You must know your thesis, backwards and forwards. There must be nothing about it that you have forgotten. However miniscule the detail, and however insubstantial to your thesis that detail ultimately is, you must nevertheless know it.

When it comes time to question you, after presentation of your work, questions you cannot answer will strike you down. Knowledge is your shield.

Know the Big Picture: What Are You Trying to Prove?

While you will already be intimately familiar with your research, readings, and revisions of your opus, you should still allot yourself time prior to your defense in which to know crucial elements of your thesis front to back. This is your primary concern.

What are you trying to prove? This is your number one concern, and being able to state this clearly, and back up your efforts with sources and arguments, is the main point of your thesis defense.

So, start with the big picture. Know your main points and the crux of your arguments. You have one, main thrust with this thesis, and you have one, primary tentpole holding it up. No doubt you have more evidence than one primary source, but inevitably one will have more weight and potency than the others. Start there and work your way out.

Don’t memorize words to say, but memorize the web of arguments you have woven together to support your work. Your research was about X, and you have Y as a result, and now you share that and defend your assertions.

You can’t memorize the whole thesis – it will be large – but you can memorize a few, important points that support your main argument, and give credibility to your assertions. Again, you aren’t memorizing a speech to give, but you should know some of your more crucial statistics and datapoints so you can reference them easily.

Know Your Secondary Sources

It’s not just enough to know what your own thesis says, but you must be knowledgeable about its foundations. Your thesis is built on sources and materials that you have cited and referenced throughout. These deserve your attention as well.

If you are being questioned and, without a beat, you can cite chapter and verse on the proofs for your claims, this gives your own arguments depth and clarity. A successful thesis will add to the knowledge base of your field, but it must be built on the knowledge that came before. Knowing your secondary sources demonstrates your knowledge, shows how your thesis connects to that knowledge, and solidifies your arguments through the foundational assertions of prior experts.

Are you looking for grad school tips that will help you succeed in your application and once you get in? Watch this:

Sun Tzu Was Right

“Know your enemy,” wrote the philosopher and military commander Sun Tzu, “as you know yourself, and you will have victory in many battles.”

Your thesis makes a claim, adds to the body of knowledge in your field, and does so with evidence, research – not to mention panache – and is given its gravitas by the myriad of sources and proofs that you have to offer. Great, but don’t forget about those who disagree.

In most fields – certainly all the ones worth studying – anybody who makes a claim will have that claim challenged.

This is, perhaps, the most important step to preparing your defense: know why your detractors will say your thesis is wrong. If you can “steel man” – the opposite of “straw man” – their arguments, and phrase counter-arguments to your own statements – as well as anybody who holds those ideas would – then you have already, essentially, anticipated many, if not all, of the questions the examining board will put to you.

With that knowledge, you will also know to prepare defenses, explanations, and counter-arguments to each of these perceived complaints. Make sure that your counter-arguments would satisfy the majority of reasonable, educated persons in your field – if not any potential naysayers themselves.

Of course, having the main points, secondary points, data, references, detractions, and answers to those detractions all at your mind’s immediate beck and call would be wonderful; but, if you can manage to memorize all of that reliably within your head, don’t count on nothing but pure, rote learning to bring up all of this information. We recommend you keep quick reference notes to help you.

When you’re asked a question, having quick access to well-kept notes will serve you well. Notes themselves are nice, but you also need to be able to access them quickly. Any paradigm that works for you will do, but here is a sample schema for you to consider:

From a dollar store or office supply store \u2013 with reference numbers to bookmark key passages. These reference numbers will correspond to your table of contents. "}]">

Again, use any rubric you want, but pick a system and make sure it works for you. How do you know it works? By testing it.

A Baptism of Fire, and How to Avoid It

That term - “baptism of fire” – refers to being trained via a quick shove onto a battlefield. You might also think of mother and father bird shoving their younglings out of the nest, peeping encouragement at them to fly.

Don’t let this happen to you. Check your wings first.

Mock interviews are extremely useful for interview preparation. Arrange a mock thesis defense. Get professionals who know what they are doing to grill you on your thesis. A professional mock panel will simulate the time, let you run through your presentation, and put you through your paces by asking insightful, challenging questions; they might even ask questions you didn’t anticipate – in which case, lucky for you it was caught beforehand.

Or, not so lucky. Lucky is what happens to a soldier in a baptism of fire, but you’re not doing that. You’re preparing, training, and refining your methods to be bulletproof before anybody fires upon you at all.

A mock defense will simulate the real thing as close as possible, likely even giving you a taste of the nerves and letting you learn how to cope with anxiety. Plus, you can test your filing system for quick recall.

Before the Day - What to Get Ready

The most crucial elements to get ready are anything that you will directly need. That is to say that you should have access to your presentation itself, as well as your notes, and anything else that you’ll require for the defense. Everything else is secondary, and while it’s not a great idea to show up without combing your hair, at least you can still mount a defense with bedhead; you can’t defend your thesis without your critical notes.

With that said, definitely comb your hair. Presenting your thesis is about presenting yourself, as well, so put on some professional-casual clothes so you are comfortable and presentable.

Bring along anything else you need to be comfortable in the room, such as a water bottle or pencils and a notepad – anything you might want to help you succeed.

The exception: don’t overload so much that you are carrying multiple bags around with you.

On the Day - Mental and Anxiety Control

The very nature of the activity of thesis defense means that you will be spending your presentation and your day on the defensive. This is, inherently, a stressful position to take, but a strong aggravating factor is the stakes of the event. This is a momentous occasion. You are at the proverbial moment of truth where you will either advance to the next, major phase of your career, or you will be forced to reconcile yourself to returning and revising – another revision and exploration and another defense.

Naturally, it follows that stress management is going to be one of the most important aspects of your day.

Prevention is the Best Cure

Give yourself an on-the-day boost by planning your studying and preparation well in advance. This will enable you to take a break before the actual day. If the day before your thesis defense can be one spent in contemplation, meditation, or relaxation, you’ll have a much better mental state for the defense itself.

Also of utmost importance: sleep. Maintaining a decent sleep schedule can be nigh-impossible, let alone sporadically getting in the actual recommended hours of sleep that your doctor really wants you to get. Nevertheless, make an extra effort to get a lot of rest, ideally within a sleep schedule, so that you are bright-eyed come defense time.

Long-term Stress Management

The rise of app culture is seen by some as the fall of civilization – particularly those spiritual or personal aspects of life. Tech is really just a tool, however, and finding a good meditation app can give you the right tech-based buddy system to keep you in good mental health. Meditation can be a great stress-management technique, and trying out some basic techniques will help you to stay alert, focused, and calm on your big day.

Physical Health IS Mental Health

How are you eating? Do you get out to exercise?

These are things that can easily fall by the wayside while pursuing higher academics. There is a reason that there is a cliched stereotype of undernourished, sleepless academics: it’s hard to absorb, retain, and study knowledge at this demanding level while maintaining a good balance with the more physical aspects of your life. Nonetheless, good physical health is strongly linked with good mental health, and you should pursue both.

Remember Step One...

Preventing panic is often a case of focus being unable to override insecurity. You’ve already taken care of your knowledge base: know your thesis. With that, you can keep insecurity at bay. Now for focus. What is the first thing you have to do when you get in the room? You’ll have some opening remarks, but even before that, you’ll likely want to quickly introduce yourself and welcome and thank your thesis screening panel. Forget everything else. Stop worrying about it, because you just have to do that first thing.

Concentrate on the Next Thing

After that, keeping yourself from getting distracted by insecurity is a question of focusing on whatever you must do next. You’ve made it through your introduction: great. What’s next? Since you’ve composed a careful set of notes, and carefully arranged those notes on your desk, table, or podium – or computing device – you can glance down and look to “point two” to carry you forward. Focus on doing your best job on that point. Once it’s over, focus on point three. Keep on in this way, and you have exorcised the twin demons of distraction and insecurity.

Fix Mistakes with No Fanfare

What if you misspeak? Just go back over it and fix the error quickly. “I’m sorry, I meant to say that 33% of the population favors blue above other colors, not 30 %. ”

Once you’ve fixed the error, move on. Dwelling on it does nothing at best, and exacerbates your problems at worst.

What if your PowerPoint presentation gums up? What if your computer freezes? What if the projector won’t project?

Remember that everybody in the room deals with glitches and tech errors, just like you, and do your best.

Don’t hide it – it's not hidden – but just briefly acknowledge the problem, “It seems the computer has frozen. Pardon me,” and see if you can fix it. If you can’t, rely on your notes to keep going. If you have infographics or charts and data that you wanted to highlight, offer to show those elements to the thesis screening panel, or to describe the data they need.

You’re being judged based on your logic, reasoning, rationales, recommendations, findings, data, and the effectiveness of your thesis. Nobody’s going to dock points from your presentation if there was a power failure.

Plus, if you’ve followed our advice thus far, you have redundant note systems with you, and you’ll be fine.

How to Stay Calm, Generally

Keep your breath under control. This ties in with meditation, to some extent, but controlled breath will keep your heart-rate down and your anxiety levels far more controlled than they would otherwise be. That is not to say that you won’t feel any anxiety, per se, just that – statistically speaking – you are far more likely to have far less anxiety.

Many people like to imagine a humorous image, particularly of their audience, to calm themselves down. This might work for you, but what this technique is getting at is a way to take your mind off of your anxieties and force it to focus on something else.

To do this, you needn’t go to the cliché of imagining anybody in underwear. Rather, just have a calming image or idea in your head that you can focus on. Pick something that makes you calm, or brings out a smile, and something that you can concentrate on to stop any panic moments and take away the snowball effect that happens whenever you dwell on something negative or that makes you anxious.

A Final Tip on Courtesy

Remember to be courteous, gracious, and polite. It really helps if you remember the names of the people on your thesis panel, so write those down if you have to.

What Does a Thesis Defense Look Like?

A thesis defense consists of a short presentation – about twenty or thirty minutes – on your thesis, followed by a discussion. That discussion is the actual defense of your thesis, as the thesis panel will be asking you questions and challenging you on your research, your conclusions, and your ideas.

The questioning period might take another twenty minutes or an hour, or even longer. There is no guaranteed time duration, so be prepared for a lengthy discussion and debate after your presentation.

Standard format would probably include the use of a PowerPoint-type accompaniment to your summation of your thesis. It is recommended that you provide more than just a lecture. If you want your panel to have anything like infographics, charts, or statistics, you need to provide it, either as part of a visual slideshow presentation, handout sheets, or both.

Common Types of Questions and How to Respond

Knowing what kind of thesis defense questions can come your way will be very advantageous for you because it will help you understand the kinds of answers you need to give.

Probing Questions

These feel your argument out a bit, just to test and see if you know your stuff, or if you’ve just memorized a very specific subset of data. These will seem almost unbearably easy if you have studied extensively while researching your thesis. If you haven’t, they will be painfully difficult. If you cannot answer these basic questions, you will seem as though you have crafted a thesis with blinders on, and it is unlikely you will survive further, deeper rounds of questioning.

Data Clarification

Maybe a chart didn’t go deep enough. Maybe somebody is curious if that statistic you gave was per capita or not. These clarification questions will just seek to clear up any misconceptions or blind spots in your presentation. This is why it’s important to know both your material and the secondary sources and citations you have made. If you understand all of this information thoroughly, you’ll be able to go deeper than any one chart and explain everything. This is also why it’s necessary to keep quick reference cards and tables of contents. If you blank on that per capita question, your index card won’t.

Opposing Viewpoint and Supporting Data

These questions will seek to challenge your ideas and stress your thesis by digging deep. They will present opposing views and find out whether or not you have considered alternate points of view. These are the most crucial questions to have excellent answers to, because these are the questions that directly challenge your work and are what you are “defending” your thesis from. We have already warned you to know your “enemy” as you know yourself. We stress this again here: have top-grade answers to cutting questions, or fail in your attempt.

Arm yourself with knowledge of your own thesis and an anticipation of what your detractors might, or do, say, and then practice, practice, practice.

At the end of a long period of vigorous study, get some rest, keep calm, and fire up a meditation app – or go for a walk.

In short: follow our advice, your common sense, and trust to your knowledge base and the research and readings you’ve done over the past years, and you’ll have a solid thesis defense.

Ideally you will dedicate several weeks to thesis preparation. Start about three to five weeks ahead of the defense and put aside some time every day to work on some aspect of your defense.

There isn’t really such a thing as too much prep. You could take too many notes and wind up with a very large, unwieldy reference binder, but even that is mitigated by your “table of contents.”

Err on the side of “too much” rather than “not enough.”

They’re probably just testing your knowledge of the material versus whether or not you just memorized a speech. Treat this as a probing question and answer in reference to your work. If this is an accident, don’t draw attention to it, and don’t get exasperated.

Say it’s outside of your field or area of study, but explain why you didn’t go there. So, if they ask about something peripheral, acknowledge that this isn’t part of what you’ve learned, why you are aware of it, and why you didn’t pursue further research into that area. Above all else, don’t fake knowledge you don’t have.

Numbers may vary, but three to five is fairly typical.

If you need a short break, to use the restroom, for instance, you can ask for one.

Have talking points and a firm knowledge of your facts and ideas, but don’t memorize set speeches. You can come off sounding robotic and impersonal. Worse, if you are asked a question and you find yourself getting lost, you might not remember details of your speech without the “ramp up” into any given part. Better to know the data, rather than the exact words.

In the event that you are not awarded your master or doctorate, you will most likely be given the chance to revise your thesis and try again. The committee will give you feedback, and you will revise accordingly.

In the life of each last-year university graduate student, there comes the time when one is faced with the need to write thesis and defend it in front of a large examination board. Is it the case of yours; is your thesis defense getting closer every day? Still don’t believe in your success? Do not panic! Our  thesis writing service has prepared for you key tips and recommendations that will help you can achieve the cherished goal.

There are several unspoken rules that a person need to follow to be 100% sure to be able to perfectly prepare for his program thesis defense . The approximate procedure of thesis defense covers the following steps:

  • Presentation of the topic for your dissertation;
  • Listing of the main objectives of your work, as well as the relevance of the chosen thesis title  in you field;
  • Discussion of your subject, object of your research, as well as the period of its conduction;
  • Presenting the main vectors of your research, as well as the identified shortcomings and possible ways to solve problems. It is important that all the assumptions made in the work are logically consistent with the rationale contained in thesis body. Otherwise, the committee will have many questions you will have to answer.
  • In the final part of the report, it is best to make a general conclusion.

As a rule, the length of the report does not exceed 5 pages of the Word text format with a font-size of 14 points and a 1.5 line spacing. To be ready for thesis defense,  you must prepare a presentation and speech. Such illustration material is used as a visible guide that demonstrates and proves the main points and results of the research. Information to be used in a presentation is selected by the master students in accordance with the material discussed in the explanatory note to the work. Such materials may include various drawings, tables, graphs, and so on.

It is not easy to defend a thesis professionally if you have never done it before. Defending a thesis is an extremely laborious process that require both in-depth understanding of the topic and professional speaking skills. However, everything is doable, and there are some tips that will help you deliver the task and obtain a degree.

It is not a secret that all thesis works is required to first be reviewed by the project supervisor. Therefore, it is highly recommended submitting a ready-made version of the thesis for review to your advisor in advance. Thus, your supervisor will be able to read the paper and make edits, and there still will be enough time for you to do all the corrections and improve your thesis work.

As a general rule, thesis defense lasts no more than 5-7 minutes. During such a short period of time, it is necessary for you to convey the essence of your work, its relevance and importance. You should in no case retell all the content you have covered when writing thesis paper . Instead, you are to focus on the main point of your work and present only the most weighty arguments. Thus, in your presentation, you should set out the basic statements defining the work importance, research you have conducted, and conclusion of thesis  you have come to.

It should be remembered that the key to successful thesis defense is a thorough preparation. It is best to make a performance plan and rehearse your speech by retelling your defense in front of either your friends or relatives. It is the rehearsal that will help to adjust the size of your speech to the most optimal by deleting unnecessary statements and leaving only the high-importance information.

It is always possible to entrust thesis writing to some writers or agencies; however, it should be remembered that without mastering the basics of the subject, it is impossible to get a positive assessment of your knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to answer the subsequent questions of the examination board clearly, competently, and without any confusion. In fact, this is easy to achieve only if you are confident in your knowledge.

Discover how to write a research question and state a hypothesis.

Of course, detailed preparation of your presentation and speech is highly important. You also sjould be sure all your citations are done right. But we have some other recommendations to follow if you want to get the highest grade for the thesis defense:

  • Before the defense day, be sure to sleep. On the “X” day, you can drink a sedative, but do not overdo it;
  • Come to an educational institution in advance, no less than 30 minutes before the defense session starts;
  • During the thesis defense, speak on the essence of the chosen topic; it is not a good idea to use general phrases when presenting a scientific work;
  • Forget that you do not know something - there may be situations when commission members ask a question; in this case, you should not keep silent and answer at random. Keep time to think about the question and find the correct formulation for the reply.

It would be a good idea to plan your speech and think about the questions that the faculty commission board may ask you. Thus, you will have enough time and resources to explore the theme more deeply and will be 100% ready for any question to be asked.

  • The presence specific references to primary sources in the thesis;
  • The use of relevant regulations in the text of the thesis;
  • The use of materials of up-to-date periodicals and accounting of the established practice on the research problem;
  • The use of special literature on the issues under consideration in the work;
  • Completeness and quality of the collected actual data on the basis of the study;
  • The presence of elements of a creative approach to solving problems and the application of modern research methodology;

  • The validity of conclusions and recommendations made in the thesis, as well as the possibility of their practical implementation;
  • The style of material presentation and the absence of grammatical errors and misprints;
  • The quality level of work;
  • The appearance and content of the presentation prepared for thesis protection;
  • The ability to competently, logically and reasonably present the results of the thesis in the form of a report presented on the defense day without reading its printed version;
  • The ability to debate on theoretical and practical issues of the thesis, the depth and accuracy of the answers to the questions of the department commission member;
  • Approbation of the thesis (introduction into practice, the availability of copyright publications on the topic, speeches on the topic at different conferences, etc.).

Thesis statement defense is not an easy thing to do, especially if you do not have any experience. The same goes to thesis statement writing. What is a Thesis Defense?

Staff picture

If you're researching a master's degree, you'll likely come across the phrase "thesis defense" among the list of requirements for earning an advanced degree. This formal-sounding requirement usually comes at the end of a graduate program. As a student seeking a master's degree, your thesis defines your educational experience at the university. Once you've completed all the necessary coursework and finished any internship or practicum experiences, you will be required to meet with a committee to defend your work. Details of a defense vary by college, but there are some general things to keep in mind as you embark on the graduate process.

Explore these promoted online degree programs.

These top, accredited schools offer a variety of online graduate degree programs. Figuring out where to apply? Consider one of these online Master’s or PhD programs.

What is a Thesis?

In most schools, the  thesis  represents a student's collective understanding of his or her program and major. Students who major in English, for example, typically explore language, literary themes, a specific author's work or a similar topic when writing a thesis paper. Universities often require theses to consist of a prospectus, which outlines the intent of the paper, and a full-length paper treatment of a particular topic. In the natural sciences, theses might cover experiments or hypothetical situations in which a student researches certain elements of his or her field.

Theses projects demand full attention, and many schools require that students devote an entire semester to completing the research and resulting paper. Students work with a faculty committee or adviser on a close basis to make sure that the research stays on schedule. Depending on the level of degree, a thesis paper can be extremely complex.

Defending the Work

Once students submit their theses papers to the thesis committee, they will be assigned a date to defend their work. In this case, "defend" does not imply that a student will have to argue aggressively about his or her work. Rather, the thesis defense is designed so that faculty members can ask questions and make sure that students actually understand their field and focus area. Defending a thesis largely serves as a formality because the paper will already have been evaluated. During a defense, a student will be asked questions by members of the thesis committee. Questions are usually open-ended and require that the student think critically about his or her work. A defense might take only 20 minutes, or it might take an hour or more depending on the goal of the committee and the requirements of the program.

Preparation for Your Thesis Defense

Students have months to  prepare for a defense . Schools want graduate candidates to be as prepared as possible when attending a defense, which means that neither the date nor faculty committee will be a surprise to the student. It's important to keep in mind that if you go into a defense with the right attitude and preparation, failing is nearly impossible. The committee wants to see how well you know your subject and your research. Nerves may get the better of you as you face unknown questions, but as with a job interview, practicing ahead of time will lead to a successful defense.

Facing a defense can be stressful, but think of it as an opportunity to share what you've learned. Remember that you aren't arguing points when you defend your work. Instead, a proper thesis defense gives you and your faculty advisers the chance to discuss your topic and research in greater detail.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of a single Alchemical Ascension cycle :

  • Visit Freda if you have enough money for new bottle types or cultivation expansions.
  • Cultivate Ingredients : harvest ingredients and plant new ones.
  • Go to the cauldron and click on ‘ market news ’ icon in the upper right corner (as shown in the picture below). The news will tell you which potion types are currently in demand, so this is a very important step!
  • Craft a new potion .
  • Enhance any existing potions at the cauldron. This will cost you some money, but as it improves their value, it’s typically worth the investment.
  • Go to the Potions Stock and choose the potions you want to sell. Make sure they align with market demands!
  • End the cycle .

Steelers free-agency news, grades: Justin Fields acquired after Kenny Pickett shipped out

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - NOVEMBER 08: Quarterback Justin Fields #1 of the Chicago Bears throws the ball down the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the third quarter at Heinz Field on November 8, 2021 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Emilee Chinn/Getty Images)

PITTSBURGH — For years, free agency felt like a mere blip on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ calendar. While much of the league dove headfirst into the open market, Pittsburgh only dipped in its toes, using free agency sparingly to supplement a draft-and-develop approach.

However, a new front office brought a slight shift in philosophy.

During Omar Khan’s first free agency in the pilot’s chair last year, the general manager inked several significant starting-caliber players and handed out a handsome extension to Larry Ogunjobi . The $30 million increase in the salary cap and the numerous roster cuts to save money should provide Pittsburgh with enough wiggle room to find a few more impact players this year.

Khan didn’t even wait for free agency to open before making a huge splash, adding nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson on a one-year deal late Sunday night and setting off a chain of events during the first week of free agency.

Steelers trade for Justin Fields

Date: March 16

Impact: High

Kaboly’s thoughts: After the Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett on Friday, they needed to find options and talent to fill out the quarterbacks room. It took 24 hours for general manager Omar Khan to acquire a talented quarterback with potential yet doing it in a way that is safe for them. They acquired Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick that could transform into a fourth-round pick depending on playing time. It is less than what the Eagles gave up to acquire Pickett. Fields is far from a sure bet, but with the Bears in a position to take a quarterback with the No. 1 pick and Fields heading into his fourth year, he became expendable. And with the quarterback market softening, a potential fourth-round pick is chump change in terms of compensation to acquire a young quarterback with potential. Fields will back up Russell Wilson, and the Steelers will surely not pick up his fifth-year option in early May, but that’s not the reason they moved on him. He was the best available backup and can now provide the Steelers with options at the end of the season when Wilson also becomes a free agent. Fields will have a year to learn the Steelers system before a long-term decision needs to be made. OK, he’s flawed and who knows if he will ever be as good as he was two years ago, but the risk in acquiring him was low.

Grade: B+ —  It’s hard to come up with a negative with this acquisition other than Fields could be a one-year rental. It might not work out, but it does provide the Steelers depth (38 starts in three years) this season and options after the season.

Steelers add WR Van Jefferson

Date: March 15

Impact: Low

Kaboly’s thoughts: The Steelers needed to add players to the wide receiver room, and Jefferson fits that role. He’s not a high-quality receiver in terms of production but does have some upside and should battle for a roster spot.

The son of former NFL receiver and current Carolina receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, Van Jefferson had a promising second season with the Rams , catching 50 of 89 targets for 802 yards and six touchdowns. But he missed time with injuries in 2022 and was traded midway through 2023 to Atlanta, where he played for now Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, finishing with 12 catches in 12 games. The 27-year-old was a second-round pick out of Florida in 2020.

Grade: C — Jefferson will provide down-the-field depth but does little to move the needle in terms of the starting receiver position .

Kenny Pickett sent to Philadelphia

DeFabo’s thoughts: Any talk of a possible QB competition quickly went out the window Friday. Just hours after Russell Wilson held an introductory news conference to celebrate his signing in Pittsburgh, general manager Omar Khan traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a modest return.

The Steelers sent Pickett and a fourth-round pick (No. 120) in exchange for a third-round pick (No. 98) and a pair of 2025 seventh-round picks. The compensation shows how far Pickett’s stock has fallen. The 2022 first-round pick was worth only 22 places to move up from Round 4 to Round 3, plus a pair of seventh-round picks.

The book on Pickett coming out of college was that he had a high floor but not an especially high ceiling because of limited arm strength and questions about his poise in the pocket. The fact that he did not succeed early certainly diminished hopes for him in the long term.

Punting on a QB after two seasons is never ideal, but it also shows another example of the new way the Steelers are doing business. Rather than sitting and waiting, they admitted their mistake and cut ties with the quarterback. The front office deserves a level of credit for acknowledging reality and moving forward despite the ill-advised draft pick two years ago.

While the move might have fast-tracked an inevitable divorce, it also leaves the Steelers with just one quarterback on the roster. Considering Wilson is set to turn 36 years old in November and is on a one-year contract, the Steelers will once again need to find a long-term answer behind center sooner than later.

go-deeper

How the Kenny Pickett era fizzled and where the Steelers go from here at QB

Grade: C — The Steelers eliminated a possible distraction in their locker room but brought back only a minimal return. Questions about the quarterback position will continue to persist unless Wilson proves he’s worthy of an extension or the Steelers find a reliable passer elsewhere.

Montravius Adams returns on 2-year deal

Date: March 14

Impact: Medium

DeFabo’s thoughts: General manager Omar Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidl have repeatedly stressed the importance of building quality depth in the trenches. On Thursday, they kept one of their own with that objective in mind, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with defensive tackle Montravius Adams, per multiple reports.

Adams’ career was trending in the wrong direction in 2021 when he was relegated to the Saints’ practice squad. The Steelers claimed him on Nov. 30 and promptly thrust him into the starting lineup. He’s started 21 of the possible 35 games in which he’s been healthy. (For this reason, you might not find a bigger Mike Tomlin supporter in the locker room than Adams, who has said he’s forever indebted to the team.)

Last season, when Adams went down with injury, it opened a door for Keeanu Benton . The rookie took full advantage of the opportunity. Tomlin made it known in his end-of-season news conference he expects big things from Benton in Year 2. Adams very well might start the season behind Benton at nose tackle on the depth chart.

But given Benton is continuing to diversify his skill set across the defensive front, and Khan said they want to be cautious about how quickly they bring Cameron Heyward back from offseason surgery, Adams should have opportunities to be part of the rotation in certain packages and situations.

Grade: C — Adams is a solid depth piece but, in an ideal world, will serve more as a backup.

Steelers add potential starting S

Date:  March 14

Impact:  Medium

DeFabo’s thoughts: The Steelers addressed their secondary on Thursday, agreeing to terms with former Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott on a two-year, $6 million deal, according to multiple reports.

Elliott, who turns 27 in April, started 15 games for Miami last season, posting a career-high seven pass breakups along with an interception and 82 tackles. He started 13 games for the Lions in 2022 and 22 games for the Ravens from 2020 to 2021.

Where Elliott fits in the defense remains to be seen. The Steelers have an obvious need at strong safety after releasing Keanu Neal with a failed physical designation. At 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, Elliott would be capable of filling that void in the box.

But that’s not his only position. Last season, Elliott took the majority of his snaps from a deep, free safety position. Over his five-year career, he’s also been deployed as a strong safety, nickel linebacker and slot cornerback.

Last year’s free safety, Damontae Kazee (who is still under contract for 2024), underwhelmed and often took poor angles, and nickel corner Chandon Sullivan remains unsigned, so the Steelers could use Elliott in any of these roles. At the same time, as much as they like to move defensive backs around their defense, chances are Elliott will probably end up in numerous positions anyway.

Grade: C — Instead of spending big on an impact safety, the Steelers took a more cost-effective approach. That was their path last year, and it didn’t pay off. Maybe this one will.

Mason Rudolph leaves Steelers for Titans

Date: March 13

Kaboly’s thoughts: Khan said the Steelers wanted Rudolph back, but when the team did a 180 and signed Russell Wilson, that all changed. Rudolph signed a one-year deal with the Titans worth as much as $3.62 million with incentives, per team and league sources, to backup second-year pro Will Levis . Rudolph has never made more than $3 million in a season across six years in the NFL, all with Pittsburgh.

The Steelers held out hope that Rudolph would return as the No. 3, but he had zero interest after not getting an opportunity to win the starting job, following 2023’s late-season surge. Rudolph started the last three regular-season games, winning them all and getting the Steelers into the playoffs before losing to the Bills .

He started 13 of 21 games in his time with the Steelers, finishing with an 8-4-1 record. The Steelers have only two quarterbacks on their roster: Wilson (once he officially signs) and Kenny Pickett.

Special teams ace Miles Killebrew staying in Pittsburgh

DeFabo’s thoughts: The Steelers came to an agreement with Pro Bowl special teamer Miles Killebrew on a two-year deal worth up to $6.5 million, a league source confirmed.

When Killebrew was a lightly recruited high school safety, he started his highlight video with clips of him running down the field on special teams and blowing up plays. That willingness to embrace the underrated third phase of the game earned him his lone scholarship offer at Southern Utah. Even as he’s developed, he’s never forgotten his roots, becoming one of the league’s most impactful special teams players.

Since he signed with the Steelers in 2021, Killebrew has blocked three punts, the most in the league over that span. During the 2023 season, he blocked one punt through the end zone for a safety, helping turn the tide in a 17-10 win over the Ravens. Later in the season, he partially blocked another punt, which won’t show up on the stat sheet because it traveled past the line of scrimmage.

Those plays helped Killebrew earn his first Pro Bowl nod and the handsome new contract that will make him one of the league’s higher-paid special teamers.

Grade: B — Killebrew is a team-first player with great football character. He’s a valuable contributor on the field and a high-quality individual to have in the locker room. The price tag is high, but Killebrew is worth it.

Steelers don’t tender RFAs, agree with LS Kuntz

Kaboly’s thoughts: Veteran long snapper Christian Kuntz was one of four restricted free agents not tendered by the Steelers on Wednesday, but he will return on a long-term extension.

The Steelers have agreed to terms on a three-year deal with Kuntz, according to a team source. His salary is unknown, but it’s likely not more than the league minimum of $1.125 for a veteran heading into his fourth accrued season. Restricted free agents left unsigned are defensive lineman Renell Wren, linebacker Chapelle Russell and running back/kick returner Godwin Igwebuike. The Steelers can negotiate an unrestricted free-agent contract with any of them.

Grade: B — It’s just a long snapper, but Kuntz has been pretty dependable over his three-year career.

Armon Watts goes to New England

Kaboly’s thoughts: Watts’ departure isn’t a huge loss, but it’s not insignificant either. He was a rotational player along the defensive line a year ago. He didn’t provide much in the way of stats (15 tackles and a half-sack) while playing 28 percent of the snaps, but his availability was noticeable, especially at a thin position.

The Steelers don’t have much in the way of depth at defensive tackle, and their two starters — Cameron Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi — are both 30-plus. Watts played three years with the Vikings and one with the Bears before signing with the Steelers. They need to find depth at the position, as DeMarvin Leal and Isaiahh Loudermilk are their only options right now.

Steelers ship off Johnson for CB, pick swap

Date:  March 12

Impact: Very high

Diontae Johnson ’s tenure in Pittsburgh is over, as the Steelers are trading the wide receiver to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson and a swap of sixth- and seventh-round draft picks, league sources confirmed Tuesday. The Steelers will receive pick No. 178 and send back No. 240. The deal cannot become official until the new league year opens Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Trade terms, per source: Panthers get: WR Diontae Johnson Seventh-round pick: No. 240 Steelers get: CB Donte Jackson Sixth-round pick: No. 178 @TheAthleticNFL — Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) March 12, 2024

Johnson’s name had been mentioned in trade rumors after an up-and-down season in 2023. He finished second on the team in receiving yards (717) and tied for the lead in receiving touchdowns (five) despite missing four games because of injury, but he also got into a locker-room spat with teammate Minkah Fitzpatrick and drew criticism for his lack of effort on a play against the Bengals (Johnson later apologized ).

The 27-year-old was a Pro Bowler in 2021, when he posted career highs of 107 receptions, 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. He had one year remaining on his contract. With the trade, the Steelers will save $10 million against the cap while absorbing $5.8 million in dead money.

Jackson, 28, started for most of his six seasons in Carolina, including 16 games in 2023, when he posted five pass breakups. A second-round pick out of LSU in 2018, he was entering the final year of his contract and reportedly was a candidate to be released if he was not traded. He is due $4.7 million in base salary in 2024, plus a $4 million roster bonus and $1.7 million per-game roster bonus.

Kaboly’s thoughts:  This wasn’t a great return for a top receiver like Johnson, but the Steelers were backed into a corner. Johnson requested a trade entering the final year of his contract, with no extension in sight and a $3 million roster bonus due Friday. With that deadline looming, the Steelers didn’t get much in the way of a return, moving up 68 picks near the end of April’s draft and adding a veteran cornerback.

Jackson, who was reportedly a candidate to be released, comes with a $10.5 million cap hit. It is unknown whether or not the Panthers will eat some of that. The Steelers needed a cornerback, with only three currently on the roster and Joey Porter Jr. being the only one with experience. But Jackson hasn’t played well since being the 55th pick in the 2018 draft. He signed a three-year, $35.1 million deal in 2022 and had three voidable years left on his deal after this season.

The trade puts the Steelers in a tough spot, as they have only George Pickens returning as a starting receiver. Calvin Austin III is highly regarded but played sparingly last year. He missed all of his rookie season with an injury.

The Steelers took Johnson in the third round in 2019, and he’s had an up-and-down career. His numbers dipped recently, and he was involved in locker-room altercations with teammates in each of the past two seasons. He finishes his Steelers career with 391 catches for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns. Only five touchdowns came over the last two seasons.

Grade: C/Incomplete — The return wasn’t good, but it’s impossible to grade the trade until we see Khan’s coinciding move. The Steelers will likely add a starting-caliber receiver at some point in free agency. Calvin Ridley , Tyler Boyd , Josh Reynolds and Marquise Brown are some of the top candidates remaining.

The top free-agent ILB is coming to Pittsburgh

DeFabo’s thoughts: After Omar Khan made an early splash by agreeing to terms with QB Russell Wilson on the eve of free agency, the Steelers GM had a quiet Monday. Only a punter was added in what was an important but not so exciting move.

That changed in a big way on Tuesday, when the Steelers agreed to terms with former Ravens inside linebacker Patrick Queen, who was ranked No. 17 among The Athletic ’s Top 150 free agents and No. 1 among linebackers.

At 6-foot, 230 pounds, the 24-year-old Queen hit the open market after the Ravens declined his fifth-year option a year ago. He fills an important void in the Steelers’ defense.

Since Ryan Shazier went down with a career-ending injury in 2017, the inside linebacker position in Pittsburgh has been a revolving door. The Steelers believed they had built a solid rotation last season, only to see do-everything, three-down ‘backer Cole Holcomb and their next-best coverage linebacker, Kwon Alexander, go down in back-to-back weeks with season-ending injuries.

With Holcomb still recovering from a significant knee injury, there is no guarantee he’ll be ready by Week 1. Finding a quality replacement was paramount for a defense that’s been inconsistent for years against the run, in part because of the lackluster inside linebacker play. Khan said so himself at the combine, acknowledging that linebacker was “obviously a position we have to address.”

In Queen, the Steelers have found their new all-purpose linebacker. As our resident GM Randy Mueller wrote in his report, “He can run, blitz and play the pass or run equally well.” The Steelers, who often ask their linebackers to cover tight ends or running backs in man coverage, will need all of Queen’s well-rounded skill set, especially with bruising back Derrick Henry joining the Ravens. But with Queen on board, what was once the glaring weakness of the defense could turn into a strength.

The move also feels like another example of Khan putting his fingerprints on the franchise. When in the past have the Steelers gone out and added the top free agent at his position? This is by far the largest contract they have ever given to an external unrestricted free agent, surpassing the three-year, $26.5 million deal that guard James Daniels signed two years ago.

As the roster is currently constructed, Queen and Elandon Roberts figure to be the two starters. The Steelers can still add to that position group later in free agency or the draft, depending on how they feel about Mark Robinson and Holcomb’s health status.

Grade: A — The Steelers addressed one of their most pressing needs with the most impactful player on the open market. A big swing from Khan is likely to pay dividends .

Steelers land a punter

Date: March 11

Impact: Low to moderate

DeFabo’s thoughts: In most NFL cities, signing a punter wouldn’t move the needle much. But Pittsburgh isn’t like most cities. Former punter Pressley Harvin III ’s inconsistencies often drew the ire of the fanbase. The potential of his booming leg was far overshadowed by his shanks, eventually forcing the Steelers to move on.

By agreeing to terms with Cameron Johnston , per a league source , the Steelers have found the likely replacement for Harvin. In his six-year career (three with Philadelphia and three with Houston ), the Australian-born, Ohio State product averaged 47.3 yards per punt.

Last season, his net punting average of 44.0 yards ranked fourth-best in the league. Johnston pinned 30 punts inside the 20-yard line with just three touchbacks. He also added a career-long 74-yard punt to his resume.

Grade: B- — Adding a punter isn’t an exciting move, but it’s a necessary one, especially considering how often coach Mike Tomlin preaches about the “field position component” in news conferences.

Wilson lands in Pittsburgh

Date: March 10

DeFabo’s thoughts: Coach Mike Tomlin promised competition for Kenny Pickett at his end-of-season news conference. Even though Wilson’s price tag is the veteran minimum, a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion likely isn’t here to be the No. 2 to Pickett or push him in a quarterback competition the way re-signing Mason Rudolph might have.

While it wouldn’t be Tomlin’s way to anoint a starter, Wilson has to be the odds-on favorite to win the job.

The question is, at 35, what does he have left? Our resident GM Randy Mueller wrote in his evaluation, “He’s not for everyone at this stage, as his skill set must fit your scheme. He’s best when his targets are predetermined and play-action is a regular part of the offense. He was very risk averse and also had inconsistent accuracy in 2023. He will hold the ball and take too many sacks.”

Wilson might not be at his Pro Bowl best, but the Steelers won’t ask him to be. Pittsburgh’s defense, which finished sixth-best in scoring last season, essentially lugged an anemic offense into the postseason.

With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith expected to install a run-heavy scheme that takes the pressure off the quarterback (and one that’s awfully similar to the scheme Mueller described), Wilson will be put in a position to do what he does best: Minimize turnovers, hit a few deep balls to maximize George Pickens’ big-play potential and win white-knuckle, wonky games the way he’s built his career.

Grade: B- — Wilson is an improvement over Pickett. But at this stage of his career, how much can he push the Steelers’ ceiling?

Steelers cut Peterson, Robinson

Date: March 8

DeFabo’s thoughts: The Steelers continued to prepare for free agency Friday by releasing two veterans, defensive back Patrick Peterson and receiver Allen Robinson.

Both players added value to the organization during their lone year in Pittsburgh. Peterson provided mentorship to Joey Porter Jr. and the other young players while filling numerous roles in the secondary, including outside corner, nickel corner and safety. While he told The Athletic during the season he’d like to play two more seasons to get to 15 years in the league, he’s also set to turn 34 and is showing signs of aging.

Pittsburgh saved $6.5 million against the cap but will need to add a corner in free agency or the draft. Last year’s seventh-round pick Cory Trice Jr. has promise but is also coming off a knee injury that robbed him of his rookie year. Considering how slowly the coaches broke in Porter, they’ll need a more established starter ahead of Trice on the depth chart.

Robinson was acquired via a trade last year. While he was a dependable blocker who embraced the role he was cast in, the team saved $10 million against the cap by releasing him, making it an obvious move.

In total, the Steelers have saved $36.3 million by cutting Mitch Trubisky ($2.9 million), offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor ($8.8 million), punter Pressley Harvin III ($1.1 million), center Mason Cole ($4.75 million), safety Keanu Neal ($2.25 million), plus Robinson and Peterson.

Grade: A — This was the right business move considering age and salary.

Steelers agree to terms with depth DL Fehoko

DeFabo’s thoughts: On Friday, the Steelers announced they agreed to terms with depth defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko . The 27-year-old nose tackle joined the organization last offseason, as the Steelers made a concerted effort to add quality depth and build through the trenches. However, he toiled mostly on the practice squad last year.

It will be interesting to see how significantly the Steelers address their defensive line this offseason. In an ideal world, they’ll add enough key pieces that Fehoko is again in a reserve role.

Grade:  C+ — Fehoko provides good depth, but it’s hard to get too excited given his lack of playing time last year .
